Bible Study - Traveled - A Lifestyle of Meditation - Psalm 119, Mark 1, Psalm 1 - January 30, 2011

Bible Study – Traveled – A Lifestyle of Meditation – January 30, 2011

This is our final lesson in our series “The Roads Less Traveled.”
Our scripture is Psalm 119:11-16; Mark 1:35-39; Psalm 1:1-3.

Our final road less traveled is meditation. What is meditation? We think of monks, nuns and Buddhist priests meditating. Many Eastern religions practice meditation. Some self-help programs involve meditation but what about Christian meditation? Many of us may have meditated because of a crisis we were facing and we were seeking an answer from GOD for our situation. Some Christians meditate on GOD’S Word because it brings comfort, helps them to keep focused on GOD to fill their minds with HIS Word to crowd out unwanted thoughts. Some meditate on GOD’S Word to seek truth at a deeper Spiritual level.

So why study meditation on the heels of unity, humility, service and sacrifice? Living the Christian life is about relationship with our SAVIOR and LORD JESUS CHRIST. Our previous lessons have been about our activity in the living body of CHRIST. Often Christians can become so busy that they neglect the most vital part of their Spiritual growth, which is staying connected to their source of Spiritual vitality, CHRIST. Setting aside a time to meditate on GOD’S Word and communicating with GOD is vital. Listening is as vital as speaking. When we meditate we can probe and ponder the depths of Spiritual matters with GOD. GOD will respond in the place within us which is the “eyes of our heart.”

The Apostle Paul mentions this is his letter to the Ephesians in Chapter 1, verse 18:

17 [I pray]* that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father,[14] would give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. 18 [I pray]* that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the glorious riches of His inheritance among the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power to us who believe, according to the working of His vast strength.

Often self-help programs want you to empty your minds. The question is then what do you fill your mind with? Christians need to fill their minds with GOD’S truth which comes from HIS Word. Let’s explore.

Let’s read Psalm 119:11-16:
11 I have treasured Your word in my heart so that I may not sin against You. 12 LORD, may You be praised; teach me Your statutes. 13 With my lips I proclaim all the judgments from Your mouth. 14 I rejoice in the way [revealed by]* Your decrees as much as in all riches. 15 I will meditate on Your precepts and think about Your ways. 16 I will delight in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.

We usually think of David when we read the Psalms but Bible scholars are not certain who wrote Psalm 119. Some think it was written by Ezra the priest after the temple was rebuilt. Psalm 119 is the longest psalm and the longest chapter in the Bible. It has twenty-two (22) stanzas of eight (8) verses each. It is an acrostic poem. The Hebrew alphabet has twenty-two (22) letters in it. The writer used each letter of the Hebrew alphabet in sequence to begin each stanza, thus using all 22 letters. The psalmist expressed the importance of GOD’S Word in helping us to keep pure and to help us grow in faith and confidence in GOD.

Verses 11-16 indicate the theme of Psalm 119.

The psalmist use of the word “treasured” in verse 11 is so beautiful to me. When we treasure something, what does that mean? When we treasure something we take care of it, we place it in a secure place and we hide it for safe keeping to be used for a purpose. Those of us who are either retired or approaching retirement have something set aside for our golden years. Some of us may not have as much as we had planned for because we did not place it in as a secure place as we thought we had. The psalmist tells us that GOD’S Word is a valuable treasure and the most secure for us to place it is in our hearts.

Why our heart? Because GOD’S Word has a purpose and that purpose is for those who treasure it not to sin against GOD. Storing GOD’S Word in our hearts is more than memorizing it. We can memorize and recite words but in order for GOD’S Word to be treasure we must know the value in HIS Word. Memorization is important but we must internalize HIS Word by meditating on it and understanding how it applies to our lives as we obediently serve HIM and not sin against HIM.

Treasuring GOD’S Word in our hearts helps us build a dynamic relationship with GOD through CHRIST. We praise HIM for HIS love for us because HE allowed JESUS to come to earth to give HIS life for those who believe in HIM to have life eternal.

The psalmist asked GOD to teach him HIS statutes. The word “statutes” means “to engrave.” It carries the idea of permanence. Just think how GOD’S Word, as recorded in the book we call the Bible, has stood the test of time. We rejoice in reading GOD’S Word seeing HIS hand at work in the lives of HIS people and the nation of Israel. How we see the revelation of CHRIST from Genesis to Revelation on an ever ascending scale. We see how HIS Word is as relevant today as the day it was written. We see how HIS Word meets the needs in our lives in whatever circumstance we face. We see how the treasure we have hidden in our hearts is more valuable than physical silver, gold, precious stones or vast riches (v. 14).

The psalmist says that he will meditate or go over it in his mind. The Hebrew word “meditate” means “to make a low sound” and another word used in conjunction with it means “to go over a matter on one’s mind.” When you put these two thoughts together you get “meditation.” Sometimes as we ponder a matter we utter the things we are considering. We are verbalizing what we are thinking. When we do we hear what we are saying. Often it leads us to a better understanding or processing of a matter. It helps us to internalize what we are considering or probing.

Psalm 19:14 is scripture many of us have memorized:
14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.

In verses 15 and 16 of Psalm 119, the psalmist declares to the LORD that he will – Meditate – Think (Ponder) – Delight – on/in GOD’S law and commands as given in HIS Word and as internalized in his heart as the result of communing with HIM. This is not a blind following but a following based upon a heartfelt and motivated partnership.

As a result of the psalmist’ due diligence, he will not forget the true meaning of HIS Word because it is proven to be true and trustworthy.

Let’s read Mark 1:35-39:
Preaching in Galilee
35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He got up, went out, and made His way to a deserted place. And He was praying there. 36 Simon and his companions went searching for Him. 37 They found Him and said, “Everyone’s looking for You!” 38 And He said to them, “Let’s go on to the neighboring villages so that I may preach there too. This is why I have come.” 39 So He went into all of Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.

JESUS was preaching, healing and casting our demons in Galilee. HE was staying in the home of Simon and Andrew. HE had a busy night as we see in Mark 1:29-33:
29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went into Simon and Andrew’s house with James and John. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was lying in bed with a fever, and they told Him about her at once. 31 So He went to her, took her by the hand, and raised her up. The fever left her,[19] and she began to serve them. 32 When evening came, after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all those who were sick and those who were demon-possessed. 33 The whole town was assembled at the door, 34 and He healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. But He would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew Him.

Verse 33 tells us that “The whole town” came to Simon and Andrew’s house. HE healed those who needed healing from a disease or demon possession. HE went to bed. Then before daylight HE got up. Left the house and found a quite place to pray. HE needed to go to communicate with HIS FATHER.

Generally the busier Christians are in obediently serving the LORD, they neglect communicating with HIM. They may communicate with HIM as they work, which is good, but they need an alone time with HIM away from everything.

What JESUS communicated with THE FATHER about is not given but my speculation is that since there was such an overwhelming turnout of needy people coming to Simon and Andrew’s house, should HE stay or move on? It is always tempting to remain in a ministry that seems to be thriving. Our ego often leads us to stay because things are going great. Based upon HIS response to HIS disciples in verses 38 and 39, I think CHRIST laid the matter before THE FATHER and asked HIM what HE should do. HE received a clear response and acted accordingly.

When Christians are obediently serving the LORD, they must take time to communicate with GOD to determine whether or not they are in the place where HE wants them to be. Then when HE gives them the answer, they must respond regardless of what their flesh leads them to do. Often, Christians need the gift of discernment because it is easy for them to war with the flesh. We all do and that is why we must have the right relationship with GOD though CHRIST. Pulling away from a busy schedule and communicating with our FATHER is vital. Christians need alone time to pray, read the scripture and meditate the direction their FATHER would have them to go. This is even more critical the busier we are. JESUS was at the home of Simon and Andrew but HE still found a quite place to go to.

Simon and the other disciples discovered that JESUS was missing from the house, so they went searching for HIM. The language implies a concern along with exasperation. My take is, “Gee did JESUS just get up and leave without telling someone? We still have people who need ministering to.” HIS disciples must have been shocked when JESUS told them that it was time to move on. It is easy to stay in one place but we must obediently follow the leading of the FATHER. CHRIST was sure of HIS decision because HE had communicated with HIS FATHER. Christians must do no less.

Let’s read Psalm 1:1-3:
The Life’s Two Roads – The life of a faithful person contrasted to the life of a faithless person. The author of Psalm 1 is unknown.

1 How happy is the man who does not follow[1] the advice of the wicked, or take[2] the path of sinners, or join a group[3] of mockers! 2 Instead, his delight is in the LORD’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.[4]3 He is like a tree planted beside streams of water[5]that bears its fruit in season[6]and whose leaf does not wither.[7]Whatever he does prospers.

The psalmist was writing about the positive results of refusing to follow the crowd. There are people who want you to do as they do and when you choose not to follow in their ways, they ridicule you. I do not know what the buzz words are today but years ago you were square, not cool or not hip. The psalmist had experienced enough of life to know the value of following and obeying GOD versus following the world or the desires of the flesh. The righteous refuse to follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path of sinners or join a group of mockers. Those following the dictates of the world or flesh are intrigued to try the ways of the world. When they follow that path, they become caught in that group’s lifestyle. They are hooked be it shoplifting, drugs, gambling, drinking, sex, lying and the list goes on and on but ends in destruction. CHRIST can help them rise above their former lifestyle but it is still a struggle. Meditation is vital in rising above a former ungodly lifestyle. I have heard some say that they had to quote scripture just to go to the grocery and shop. Temptation surrounds them constantly and they must keep their minds filled with GOD’S Word and keep focused upon HIM and HIS strength for them to overcome. And many have overcome and have a life built upon the solid rock of CHRIST and HIS righteousness.

Those who refuse to follow the world find true joy and are happy. They can live with themselves and feel good about themselves. What the person finds of value and delight is in the instruction of the LORD and meditating on these instructions. As a result, the person will be fed Spiritually. His Spiritual roots will grow deep and he will produce Spiritual fruit and his faithfulness will not wither. Whatever he/she does will prosper Spiritually.

I used to think of the reference to “prosper” to mean material wealth. It can but it means Spiritual wealth. When Christians seek the relationship with GOD and HIS Kingdom all these things will be added to them to the extent they can handle them. Meditation is a vital part of internalizing GOD’S Word in our lives and becoming well rooted in GOD’S Word and in our relationship with HIM. They will be watered Spiritually and their leaf will not wither.

Have you ever felt dry Spiritually? Something has happened to your Spiritual root system. Meditation will help you restore your connection with the living water provided by your relationship with CHRIST. Meditation involves reading and studying GOD’S Word, praying, pondering and putting what GOD reveals to you into action. CHRIST went to a quite place to have alone time with HIS FATHER, routinely. We need to do the same – when we are waiting in the car pool line, in the doctor’s office, early in the morning or at night. Whatever works for you. Christians must stay connected to the vine.

I am reminded of words of JESUS in John 15:5-8:
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without Me. 6 If anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you. 8 My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be[1]My disciples.

Being grafted into the Spiritual vine of CHRIST provides Christians the opportunity to really know HIM and obediently serve HIM. Spiritual growth and maturity is not automatic. It is through the process of sanctification of which meditation is a vital part. It is through meditation that Christians probe the height, depth and width of Spiritual matters. The HOLY SPIRIT reveals truth, understanding and enlightenment as Christians ponder Spiritual truths.

Who rules our lives, the flesh or the Spirit? Christians often fight meditation because they do not have time. Do you want to be like a tree planted by streams of living water? If so, consider meditating on GOD’S Word and put what GOD reveals to you into action. The result will be fruit in season. Fruit may not come immediately but as you persist and stay connected to the true vine, vital Spiritual nutrients and living water will flow into you, fruit will come. What will your fruit look like? The following scripture lists some examples of Spiritual fruit:

Galatians 5:22-23: 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith,[5] 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Philippians 4:17: 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that is increasing to your account. (This is the fruit which results from witnessing, mentoring, teaching or investing time with others, which leads them to salvation or a deeper walk with CHRIST.)

Matthew 3:8: 8 Therefore produce fruit consistent with[3] repentance.

Hebrews 13:15: 15 Therefore, through Him let us continually offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of our lips that confess His name.

Do you want to be successful in life? True success comes as a by-product of a life based on being grafted into the true vine. It is seeking to know CHRIST through the reading, studying, meditating and putting into action what GOD reveals through the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT. This often requires a quite place where we can listen as GOD speaks. GOD can speak to HIS children anyway HE chooses and in the manner HE knows they will get the message. Consider meditating – reading and studying GOD’S Word, praying - then putting into action what GOD reveals to you and allow HIM to lead and direct your life. It is awesome but often difficult; without the right relationship impossible.

Bible Study - Traveled - A Lifestyle of Sacrifice - Luke 9 and Romans 12 - January 23, 2011

Bible Study – Travel – A Lifestyle of Sacrifice – January 23, 2011

This lesson four (4) in our series entitled “The Roads Less Traveled.”
Our scripture is Luke 9:23-24, 57-62; 21:1-4; Romans 12:1-2.

So far, we have considered unity, humility, service and today we consider sacrifice. What do we mean by sacrifice? Sacrifice in the Old Testament was the outward expression of the inward conviction, devotion or worship of GOD. Sacrifice as worship was the people giving back to GOD what HE had previously given to them. This was an acknowledgement of GOD’S grace toward them that HE had blessed them or forgiven them for their sins.

Various sacrifices depicted certain internal concerns of the person for whom the sacrifice was being offered – Guilt – Forgiveness – Thanksgiving – Appreciation. The Jewish sacrificial system ceased in 70 A. D. when the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed. The Jewish sacrificial system was no longer needed because GOD’S ONLY SON, JESUS, was the perfect sacrifice for all sin.

Second Corinthians 5:21 - 21 He (GOD) made the One (JESUS) who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we (Christians) might become the righteousness of God in Him.

In the leaders guide “Life Ventures Leaders Guide” published by LifeWay Christian Resources Of the Southern Baptist Convention, One LifeWay Plaza, Nashville, TN 37234 is a section entitled “Digging Deeper.” Quoted below is a portion of what they have to say about “The Old Testament Concept of Sacrifice.”

“In Leviticus 1-7, God instituted the Israelites’ sacrificial system. He prescribed five types of sacrifices:

(1) Burnt offering (made daily to make people right with God.)

(2) Grain offering (expressed thanks to God for the land’s produce.)

(3) Peace or fellowship offering (provided meat for a communal meal.)

(4) Sin offering (to gain forgiveness for unintentional sins.) and

(5) Guilt or restitution offering (restoring any loss a person’s sin had caused another – recompense plus a ram.) These sacrifices could be made individually or corporately. When a man brought an animal to be sacrificed, he put his hands on its head to symbolize his oneness with it. When it was killed, the man symbolically was giving his life to God as an act of worship.”

In the festival of the Day of Atonement, two (2) goats depicted this redemptive act. One goat was sacrificed. Its’ death symbolized the penalty for sin; the shedding of blood. Its’ blood was applied to the Mercy Seat in the Holy of Holies which symbolized the great sacrifice required to cover the sins of the people before they could come into GOD’S presence and ask for forgiveness for their sins. The priest symbolically placed his hands on the second goat to indicate that the sins of the people had been transferred to that goat. Then this goat, known as the scapegoat was released and sent into the wilderness to symbolize the removal of their sins.

Just think, CHRIST gave HIS life for all who accept HIM as their SAVIOR. HE paid the penalty for all of our sin so that all Christians have direct access to GOD 24/7.

So why are we considering sacrifice today? We must be clear, this is not sacrifice to gain salvation. It is sacrifice resulting from the realization of what GOD has done for us that we could not do for ourselves. It is a natural expression of the knowledge of how blessed we are and that GOD supplies all our needs. Our minds have been renewed and we are confident in our relationship with GOD through CHRIST.

Sacrifice can mean giving up something we truly want or to give up one thing in order to gain another. The key is that we are led by the HOLY SPIRIT to sacrifice. It is not us deciding what we will sacrifice in order to bribe GOD into doing what we want HIM to do for us. What we give up, as led by the HOLY SPIRIT, may be the very thing that prevents us from having the right relationship with CHRIST or obediently serving CHRIST.

Why would GOD want HIS children to sacrifice? It could be that HIS children are hanging onto something which they cherish more than HIM or that keeps them from growing and maturing Spiritually. Do you cherish something more than knowing HIM and building an intimate, loving relationship with HIM?

This lesson is not about sacrificial giving, it is about sacrificial living.

Let’s explore!!!

Let’s read Luke 9:23-24, 57-62:

23 Then He said to [them]* all, “If anyone wants to come with[8]Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily,[9]and follow Me. 24 For whoever wants to save his • life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will save it.

JESUS was teaching a large group along with HIS disciples, thus the use of the “them all” in verse 23. HE was preparing them, especially HIS disciples, for HIS death, resurrection, ascension and second coming. HE did not sugar coat what committing their lives to HIM, following HIM meant and what was expected of them. HE was going to sacrifice HIS life to pay the penalty for sin and HE expected those who follow HIM to do the same even unto death. When condemned persons took up their crosses, it meant that they were headed for death. The condemned had to carry their own crosses upon which they were crucified. JESUS’ statement was that all who would follow HIM must take up their crosses daily. This seems harsh. HE gave HIS life upon the cross to pay the price for sin. HIS death conquered sin and death so that all who believe in HIM would have life more abundantly. GOD raising HIM from the dead is proof that HE conquered sin and death so all who would believe in HIM would have eternal life.

HE knew where HE was going and HE knew what awaits all who accept HIM as their SAVIOR and make HIM the LORD of their lives. Eye has not seen, nor ear heard and neither has it entered into the heart of man the things that GOD has prepared for them that love HIM. We have not seen it, heard it or even imagined what GOD has prepared for HIS children – here upon earth as obedient followers or in heaven after our work upon earth has been completed.

So how do we know that this is true and not just some fantasy? Yes, JESUS died and was buried but the proof is HIS resurrection. We serve a living SAVIOR. Because HE lives, so will all who believe in HIM and accept HIM as their SAVIOR live eternally.

Do you want the fullness of CHRIST in your life? Then CHRIST Himself tells us what we need to do – Deny – Take up HIS cross daily – Follow HIM. Self has to die so that CHRIST can live through us to minister and serve others as HE directs through the HOLY SPIRIT.

This is impossible for Christians to do in their own strength. This is why CHRIST tells Christians to seek first the Kingdom of GOD and HIS righteousness. Matthew 6:33-34:

33 But seek first the kingdom of God[17]and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. 34 Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

The words “daily” and “follow” carry the idea of consistency. Once Christians commit their lives to HIM, they are to continue that commitment regardless of how rough the road gets. When the road gets rough, HE provides the strength to carry-on.

Verses 57-62:

Following Jesus

57 As they were traveling on the road someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go!” 58 Jesus told him, “Foxes have dens, and birds of the sky[25]have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.” 59 Then He said to another, “Follow Me.” “Lord,” he said, “first let me go bury my father.”[26]60 But He told him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.” 61 Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord, but first let me go and say good-bye to those at my house.” 62 But Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

JESUS was traveling to Jerusalem with HIS disciples. Apparently as they walked along the road others joined them. Luke recorded some of the conversations these folks had with JESUS.

Most of us are drawn to a popular person or cause. People were attracted to JESUS. They wanted to become a part of HIS group. JESUS wanted them and believers today to know that there is a cost to follow HIM.

The first encounter JESUS had with a person following along with HIS disciples was a person who said he would follow CHRIST wherever HE went. This is a noble and bold statement. Often, well meaning Christians have made that same commitment in their hearts, out loud or by stating this to their pastor. At that moment their commitment was sincere but after a time it fades for a variety of reasons – Being caught up in the emotion of the moment – health – bad choices – realizing the LORD did not call him/her – sin and the list goes on. It has happened to many of us. Does that mean that CHRIST disowns us because we made a commitment and then we changed our minds? NO!!! CHRIST knows our hearts. HE knows what needs to be done in our hearts to create the right relationship between us and HIM in order for us to accomplish what HE knows we are capable of doing to obediently serve HIM. Many Christians bite off more than their Spiritual growth and maturity can handle at that moment. But our FATHER knows that and will help them to grow and mature to the point they are capable of obediently serving HIM. It may take a while, so if that has happened to you, confess it and do not give up on what GOD can still do, when your life is committed to HIM.

Keep in mind that each human was not made for time but was made for eternity. We may not commit our lives to CHRIST until later in our lives. Committing our lives is a personal decision which requires us to yield our will and control of our lives to HIM. This is hard to do and often we yield only to take it back. But yielding and taking it back reveals the attitude of our hearts. We want to but there are things that need to be brought under HIS authority in our lives. This is the purpose and process of sanctification.

CHRIST told this person that he needed to count the cost before actually following HIM physically. HE did not have a place to call home. HE was an itinerant person. We do not know whether or not he decided to follow JESUS.

Then CHRIST called another person to follow HIM. This person was willing but first he needed to go bury his father. In the Jewish household the sons were responsible for burying their father. This sounds reasonable except many believe that his father was not dead. He wanted to wait until his father died. Why? Could it be that he wanted to get his inheritance and then he was willing to follow CHRIST? His response revealed his heart.

CHRIST made the statement, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.” Some Bible scholars believe CHRIST was saying, “Let the Spiritually dead, bury the Spiritually dead.” Notice the sense of urgency that CHRIST has, “You go and spread the news of the kingdom of GOD” which, in my opinion, if there were those Spiritually dead in this person’s home and he knew the truth, would CHRIST tell the person not to go home to witness about CHRIST? Something to ponder.

CHRIST knew HE was on HIS way to give HIS life for the sin of mankind. HE knew that this person needed to experience the events that were about to take place in order for him to obediently serve HIM. Waiting was not an option.

Has CHRIST called you and you wanted to wait until certain things were in place before you were willing to respond? When CHRIST calls, HE wants Christians to respond.

Another person said that he would follow HIM but he had to first go and tell everyone good bye. Again CHRIST puts HIS call into perspective. Once you have made a decision, act upon it.

How often, when we are asked to do something, we say that sounds good but we need to think about it, knowing all along that we are not going to do it? We just want to get away. JESUS made it clear that once we have made the decision to follow HIM, we must not look back. This is why we must be in right relationship with HIM in order to make the right decisions such that when we do, we do not look back.

JESUS, in essence, was saying if you have doubts or any hesitation then examine your heart and your motives. Prayer and confirmation is vital when seeking to obediently serve the LORD.

Let’s read Luke 21:1-4:
The Widow’s Gift
1 He looked up and saw the rich dropping their offerings into the temple treasury. 2 He also saw a poor widow dropping in two tiny coins.[1] 3 “I tell you the truth,” He said. “This poor widow has put in more than all of them. 4 For all these people have put in gifts out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”

JESUS was still teaching HIS disciples. In the court of women there were 13 trumpet shaped receptacles. JESUS observed various people placing their offerings in these receptacles. As they placed their offering into the trumpet it likely made a certain sound as it slid down the trumpet to a larger receptacle. HE saw a poor widow dropping two (2) tiny copper coins into the trumpet. The Greek word for “poor” in verse 2 carried the idea that she was living from “hand to mouth.” However, in verse 3 the word used for “poor” carried the idea of destitution or having nothing. When the two (2) tiny coins were placed in the trumpet, they likely made a certain sound indicating that she had placed a tiny offering into the trumpet. When she gave these tiny coins they were all that she had and she was totally dependent upon GOD for her needs. CHRIST told HIS disciples that she had given more than ALL the other people had placed in the temple treasury. Her heart was in right relationship with GOD because she trusted HIM for her needs.

GOD is not about quantity of material possessions we share with HIM but the quality of our heart and our relationship with HIM which drives our giving. How can our hearts be brought into right relationship with GOD? Paul tells us in our next scripture.

Let’s read Romans 12:1-2:
A Living Sacrifice
1 Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship.[1] 2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Paul used the word “therefore” to tie the theology of salvation in the first eleven (11) chapters to putting it into practice in the following chapters. Salvation carries responsibilities. CHRIST stated that Christians are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Christians must share the truth they have in CHRIST. In order to do that, they must die to their own selfish interests. Some may say, “If I go around witnessing for CHRIST my friends may think I am some religious nut.” That is why we must die to self. It is no longer about us, it is about CHRIST.

Animals that were to be sacrificed were set apart. Sanctification is being set apart for the specific use by GOD. That is why Christians are sanctified and journey down the road of sanctification. It is the process of renewing our minds to obediently follow CHRIST regardless of where it leads.

Christians must die to self by presenting their physical bodies as living sacrifices to GOD. This is figurative. This is very difficult to do because our flesh wants to rule. When animals were placed on the altar to be sacrificed, they had to be tied to the horns of the altar or otherwise they would squirm off. The same is true for us. We may figuratively place our bodies on the altar with good intentions of dying to self, only to squirm off. Our relationship with CHRIST will help keep us on the altar.

Folks, this is not easy and is impossible, in my opinion, without the right relationship with CHRIST. We squirm off the altar. But rejoice because HE knows our hearts and when we squirm off HE is willing to help us get back on to the altar, if we choose.

In verse 2, Paul used the word “conformed.” Conforming carries the idea of conforming to the physical world. This is what we as humans do. We conform to the world around us. Then Paul continues with a statement, “but be transformed by the renewing of your minds.” Transformation can only occur from the inside. This happens in the “eyes of our heart.” GOD made all of us with the freedom to choose. We decide whether or not we will accept CHRIST as our SAVIOR. That is step one. Then Christians decide whether or not they will allow GOD to lead and direct their lives by the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT. When Christians give their minds to GOD, that is when the Spiritual work begins with the renewing of the mind to obediently serve HIM. Christians no longer desire to do their will but the will of the FATHER.

Then Paul says in verse 2, “So that you may “discern.” The Greek word for “discern” was a word used for testing coins to determine whether or not they were genuine. The renewing of your mind by allowing the HOLY SPIRIT to lead, guide, teach and enlighten you to truth dispels the false notions we often embrace. It is relationship with Truth!

When GOD leads and directs our lives, we are not robots but we are HIS children obediently following HIM. HE presents the opportunities and we obey. It is a partnership through relationship which grows sweeter with each passing day.

Traveled - A Lifestyle of Service - Mark 10 and Matthew 25 - January 16, 2011

Bible Study – Traveled – A Lifestyle of Service – January 16, 2011

This is lesson three (3) in our series entitled “The Roads Less Traveled.”
Our scripture is Mark 10:42-45, Matthew 25:19-21, 29, 34-40.

We have studied unity, humility and today we study service. We have to be careful when we consider serving and not to mistake serving with earning or working for our salvation. When we talk about serving, it is obedient service as led and guided by the HOLY SPIRIT. This can only come from a person who is a Christian and has yielded his/her life to the leadership and guidance of the HOLY SPIRIT. Seek first the relationship with CHRIST and then allow CHRIST through the guidance of the HOLY SPIRIT to lead and guide you to what HE wants you do to serve HIM.

Can you serve in your own strength? YES!!! But often when we do, what we do becomes drudgery. This is not to say that when we obediently serve and in the perfect will of GOD that it will be a piece of cake. But when Christians have the right relationship with CHRIST, when serving gets tough, the HOLY SPIRIT empowers and strengthens them because they know they were called to do what they are doing. Christians are still housed in a physical body which is subject to all its frailties.

Our study today is on a lifestyle of service.

Let’s Read Mark 10:42-45:
42 Jesus called them (HIS disciples) over and said to them, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles dominate them, and their men of high positions exercise power over them. 43 But it must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be a • slave to all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life—a ransom for many.”[13]

JESUS’ disciples James and John had just asked JESUS when HE came into HIS glory to establish HIS kingdom, to let one sit on HIS left and the other on HIS right. They thought HE would establish an earthly kingdom and they wanted to be part of HIS earthly rule. It is likely that James and John were JESUS’ cousins. Their mother, Salome, is thought to be Mary, the mother of JESUS’, sister.

When the other ten (10) disciples heard what James and John were trying to do, they became indignant. JESUS had to take action. So HE called them together and said what we see in verse 42.

JESUS, in essence, said, “You know how the Gentile community operates. Once they obtain positions of authority they use their position of power to dominate those subservient to them. You see how the Romans rule over you. But this way of ruling is the wrong example for MY kingdom. My kingdom is not about power but about humility and service.”

JESUS said, if you want to be important in MY kingdom you must have a servant’s heart and be a slave to others. JESUS liked the title of “Son of Man.” It referred to HIM as a human, yet GOD. HE made it clear that HE did not come to earth to be served but to serve and to give HIS life to redeem those who would believe in HIM from the slavery of sin. Just as a slave had to be redeemed from his/her master, all humans must be redeemed from the slavery of sin.

Those who want to be great in the Kingdom of JESUS must die to self and serve others as directed by GOD through the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT.

Again, this is impossible to accomplish in our own strength. It requires the right relationship with CHRIST which will allow the HOLY SPIRIT to help Christians grow and mature Spiritually. This will allow GOD to manifest HIS power through them as HE directs.

Let’s read Matthew 25:19-21, 29: (The complete Parable is copied at the end of this lesson. Theses verses are the focus verses.)

19 “After a long time the master of those • slaves came and settled accounts with them. 20 The man who had received five talents approached, presented five more talents, and said, ‘Master, you gave me five talents. Look, I’ve earned five more talents.’ 21 “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful • slave! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master’s joy!’

JESUS had been teaching about HIS return to earth after HIS death, resurrection, ascension, second coming and eternity. HE had given a parable, which is a story which may be true or fiction but it is an earthly example to explain a Spiritual truth. HE had given a parable about ten (10) virgins which emphasized the need for Christians to stay prepared because they never know when the bridegroom is coming.

This scripture is a parable about a man leaving for an extended journey. He entrusted three (3) slaves with three (3) different sums of money called talents. The man distributed the money based upon his assessment of their ability to manage the money. We are not sure how much a talent was worth because it was valued by a certain weight of gold, silver or copper. But a talent was a large sum of money. The man gave one slave five (5) talents, one slave two (2) talents and one slave one (1) talent. The slaves knew that the man expected them to invest the money and earn him more money. So as soon as the man left two (2) of the slaves went to work and put the money to work. However, one (1) slave dug a hole and hid his talent in the ground. All the slaves knew their master and what HE expected.

After a long time the master returned to settle accounts with the slaves. Our scripture is an account of them giving a report to their master on what they had done with the money HE had loaned to them. We see that the ones who earned money gave it to their master. Their master in turn told the slaves who earned money – Well done – Good – Faithful slave. As a result of their faithfulness HE put them in-charge of more things – share in their master’s joy!!! There is nothing better than hearing “job well done” and the experiencing the joy that comes with that knowledge. When we are pulling for our sports teams and they win the game, we rejoice but when you are the person that scored the winning point that is over the top joy.

The slave that hid his talent and returned it to his master was rebuked for his laziness and the talent he had been given was given to the one that had the most money. JESUS ends HIS parable with verse 29.

Verse 29:
29 For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have more than enough. But from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.

JESUS summed up the parable by making it relevant to judgment day. Christians have been given certain gifts. A gift is something that is not a natural talent. A gift is something that our Master gives to each of HIS children to use according to HIS purpose. JESUS entrusts gifts to HIS children for them to invest while HE is waiting to return to earth or they come to heaven to join HIM. HE expects HIS children to invest their gift according to HIS will, purpose and plan. We say immediately. “How do we do that?”

You know what I am going to say. We must be in right relationship with CHRIST. When Christians are in right relationship with CHRIST, they are in the center of GOD’S will.

The beauty of using the gift or gifts GOD has given you is that HE gives the increase. As Christians faithfully use their gifts, HE increases them so that they can serve HIM more.

Christians will be held accountable for the obedient use of their gifts. Will we hide our gifts in the ground or will we use them as the HOLY SPIRIT leads and guides us?

Some may fill frustrated and say, “But I do not know what my gift is?” Ask CHRIST to help you build a relationship with you and reveal to you the gift or gifts HIS has given you to use according to HIS purpose. Often, we look for big things but in our next scripture we will see how HE measures obedient service.

Let’s move to our last scripture which deals with final judgment.

Let’s read Matthew 25:31-46: (Focus verses 34-40)
The Sheep and the Goats
31 “When the • Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels[6]with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32 All the nations[7]will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on His right and the goats on the left.

34 Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you took care of Me; I was in prison and you visited Me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or without clothes and clothe You? 39 When did we see You sick, or in prison, and visit You?’ 40 “And the King will answer them, ‘I assure you: Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.’

41 Then He will also say to those on the left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his angels! 42 For I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink; 43 I was a stranger and you didn’t take Me in; I was naked and you didn’t clothe Me, sick and in prison and you didn’t take care of Me.’ 44 “Then they too will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or without clothes, or sick, or in prison, and not help You?’ 45 “Then He will answer them, ‘I assure you: Whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me either.’ 46 “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

CHRIST is the King. There will be a day of judgment. CHRIST will be the judge as represented by the Shepherd separating the sheep, true believers, from the goats, pretenders/unbelievers. HE will separate the true believers as represented by the sheep to HIS right. The pretenders/unbelievers will be separated to HIS left.

The King then tells the believers how they ministered to HIM without them knowing it. HE was:

- Hungry and they fed HIM
- Thirsty and they gave something to drink
- Stranger and they took HIM in
- Naked and they clothed HIM
- Sick and they took care of HIM
- In prison and they visited HIM

The true believers were puzzled because they did not know when they ministered to HIM. Then the King makes the connections, “When they did these things to the least of HIS brothers, they did them for HIM.”

Here, we have to be careful that we do not equate doing with earning our salvation. Doing unto others is the result of having the right relationship with CHRIST. Doing is the result of the fruit of the HOLY SPIRIT working in their lives. Doing was a natural result of them being grafted in the true vine, CHRIST. When you do something out of love and a pure heart, it is the natural thing to do and it is no big deal. It is a part of doing what comes naturally.

These who were helped were truly in need. They could not help themselves. Helping is great but enabling someone to remain in the condition they are in is not the right thing to do. That is why Christians must be led by the HOLY SPIRIT as they serve those in need.

The sheep were given eternal life and the goats were given eternal punishment prepared for the devil and his angles. The unbelievers questioned, “When did we see you hungry, thirsty, naked, sick or in prison?” The believers obediently served whereas the unbelievers were oblivious to the needs of others. The unbelievers were focused on their own selfish needs and desires. They had closed their hearts to GOD and had never experienced the rebirth in their spirit and could not discern true needs, which includes both physical and Spiritual needs.

Some unbelievers think that by building charities and giving to various charities will earn them a place in the heart of GOD. These are good things and society benefits but do not be fooled. Good works will not get you to heaven. It is Satan’s lie. Give your heart and life to GOD through CHRIST and become a sheep, a true believer. The rewards are eternal. There will be payday some day, be ready by asking CHRIST to forgive you for your sins and to come into life right now!!!

Matthew 25:14-30: The Parable of the Talents

14 “For it (the return of CHRIST) is just like a man going on a journey. He called his own • slaves and turned over his possessions to them. 15 To one he gave five talents;[3] to another, two; and to another, one—to each according to his own ability. Then he went on a journey. Immediately 16 the man who had received five talents went, put them to work, and earned five more. 17 In the same way the man with two earned two more. 18 But the man who had received one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master’s money. Share your master’s joy!’ 22 “Then the man with two talents also approached. He said, ‘Master, you gave me two talents. Look, I’ve earned two more talents.’ 23 “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful • slave! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master’s joy!’ 24 “Then the man who had received one talent also approached and said, ‘Master, I know you. You’re a difficult man, reaping where you haven’t sown and gathering where you haven’t scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went off and hid your talent in the ground. Look, you have what is yours.’ 26 “But his master replied to him, ‘You evil, lazy • slave! If you knew that I reap where I haven’t sown and gather where I haven’t scattered, 27 then[4]you should have deposited my money with the bankers. And when I returned I would have received my money[5]back with interest. 28 “ ‘So take the talent from him and give it to the one who has 10 talents. 29 For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have more than enough. But from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 30 And throw this good-for-nothing slave into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Roads Less Traveled - A Lifestyle of Humility - Luke 14, John 13 and Philippians 2 - January 9, 2011

Bible Study – Travel – A Lifestyle of Humility – January 9, 2011

This is lesson two (2) in our series “The Roads Less Traveled.”
Our scripture is Luke 14:7-11; John 13:3-5, 14-15; Philippians 2:1-4.

Humility is a tough subject for most men. The male often thinks of humility as being a wimp and in fact to the early Greeks it was just that. CHRIST gave humility a new meaning. It carries the idea of being modest or respectful even though you have the power to do something your way. It is having the power, position, capability and ability to take a course of action for his/her benefit but choosing not to use them in order to achieve the greater good.

In our pervious lesson, we studied the Christian community. Humility is a vital characteristic for a unified Christian community. Humility deals with ego and who is in charge of your life – the flesh or the Spirit. In whom do we place our confidence and trust - tself/felsh or Spirit? Having the right relationship with GOD through CHRIST gives Christians a sense of security, belonging and purpose. When Christians are secure in their relationship with CHRIST and themselves, they do not insist on being first, sitting in special seats, being visible to those of prominence just to name a few areas where the wrong kind of pride raises its head.

Pride and self-esteem are important for every person but they need to be tempered with humility.

It boils down to attitude. Let’s consider JESUS. JESUS is GOD’S SON, ruler of the universe. HE did not have to come to earth and be born as a human to be GOD’S SON. HE was already GOD’S SON and dwelling in heaven. HE chose to leave heaven, come to earth and subject Himself to all the frailties of the human body while having the freewill to sin. He lived a sinless life as a human so that HE would be the perfect sacrifice for sin. HE willingly gave HIS life to pay the penalty for sin for all who would believe in HIM as the Promised Messiah. HE experienced the death of HIS earthly body but the Good News is that GOD raised HIM from the dead. HE had to trust GOD, HIS FATHER to guide HIM every step of the way on earth, through death and resurrection. HE did not have to do it but HE humbled Himself and came to earth for you and for me, that we might have the opportunity to be forgiven of our sins and to be born-again into the family of GOD. That is humility and the example for all Christians. Christians must remember who they are and who they represent. Paul explains what CHRIST did for Christians in our next scripture. Let’s read Philippians 2:5-11:

Christ’s Humility and Exaltation
5 Make your own attitude (a servant attitude and attitude of humility) that of Christ Jesus, 6 who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be used for His own advantage.[1]7 Instead He emptied Himself by assuming the form of a slave, taking on the likeness of men. And when He had come as a man in His external form, 8 He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death—even to death on a cross. 9 For this reason God also highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow— of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth— 11 and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

JESUS is our example. CHRIST gave up HIS power and trusted GOD, HIS FATHER for all HIS needs while HE lived upon earth as a human. HE was scorned, beaten, humiliated and crucified for all who would believe in HIM. Because HE gave HIS life and HE lived a sinless life, GOD accepted HIM as the perfect sacrifice for sin. The proof is in the fact that HE died and GOD raised HIM from the dead. We serve a living SAVIOR WHO conquered sin and death. One day, “every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

When we know what CHRIST did for us, Paul’s remarks in verses 1-4 become clearer. Just as HE humbled Himself, Christians should humble themselves to obediently serve GOD as HE leads and directs them.

Let’s read Philippians 2:1-4:
Christian Humility
1 If then there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by thinking the same way, having the same love, sharing the same feelings, focusing on one goal. 3 Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. 4 Everyone should look out not [only]* for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

The word “if” can be interpreted “since.” Since his readers are true Christians, they know the encouragement they find in CHRIST, HIS love, HIS fellowship affection and mercy/grace. Paul in essence was saying, “Christians need to be encouraged since they know that CHRIST left heaven to come to earth for all who would believe in HIM. This fact shows the agape love GOD and JESUS have for all people. Christians know this because the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT confirms these facts in their hearts. HE did this out of HIS affection, love, mercy and grace for all people.” But only those who accept HIM as thier SAVIOR will benefit. Paul knew this and understood this. He wanted all Christians to know and understand this as well because when you do, your joy overflows abundantly. You will in turn show this same humility to fellow Christians. CHRIST came to earth and gave HIS life just for you. If you had been the only person in all eternity to accept HIM as your SAVIOR, HE would have given HIS life just for you. That is unselfish love and that is what CHRIST desires for Christians to do. When Christians understand this, they will show humility to others as well. They will not show rivalry or conceit.

This is not self denigration but a sense of considering others as well as yourself keeping in mind what CHRIST did for you. Just as CHRIST showed humility, Christians are to do the same. Can Christians do this in their own strength? In my opinion, no! Often Christians try until they realize that it is only through the knowing presence and power of the HOLY SPIRIT through CHRIST that this can be done as part of their Spiritual character through sanctification. That is why Christians must have the right relationship with CHRIST. Realize that CHRIST was no namby-pamby. HE was obedient to the FATHER in all aspects of HIS life, even unto death.

CHRIST taught on humility in our next scripture.

Let’s read Luke 14:7-11:
Teachings on Humility
7 He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noticed how they would choose the best places for themselves: 8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, don’t recline at the best place, because a more distinguished person than you may have been invited by your host.[3] 9 The one who invited both of you may come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then in humiliation, you will proceed to take the lowest place. 10 “But when you are invited, go and recline in the lowest place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ You will then be honored in the presence of all the other guests. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

JESUS gave a parable to teach about humility. HE noticed people as they arrived at a special event gravitated to the best seats. Some wanted to show their importance by sitting in seats reserved for those who were important. HE used the occasion of a wedding to drive home HIS message of humility. HE said, when a person invites you to a special event, don’t try to elevate your prominence by sitting in the best seats. If you do and a more important person has been invited, the host will ask you to move to the lowest seat. This would be very embarrassing to you and likely the host. Instead go to the lowest seat and let the host elevate you to a higher and more important seat. If this happens you will be honored and the other guests will take notice.

The person that exalts himself or herself will be humbled and those who humble themselves will be exalted. When the world humbles you it is not pretty and often very hard to rise above the embarrassment.

Christians need to keep in mind that they are children of GOD and obediently serving HIM is as good as it gets. They are VIP’S and do not need to promote their importance. Just as CHRIST, THE SON of GOD humbled Himself and left HIS home in heaven to come to earth, Christians need to be naturally humble as an attribute and character resulting from the work of the HOLY SPIRIT in their lives as they interact with the world. Christians can, through their own effort, be humble but when that is the case it is not the natural result of their relationship with CHRIST. If you are not naturally humble, confess it to CHRIST and ask HIM to reveal to you what is needed in your life for you to be naturally humble as the result of the work of the HOLY SPIRIT in your life.

Does this mean Christians are to be wimps? NO! When Christians are to take a stand, they should. When you are in right relationship with CHRIST you will respond as HE leads and directs you. Hopefully, this will become clearer in our next scripture.

Let’s read John 13:3-5, 14-15:
3 Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into His hands, that He had come from God, and that He was going back to God. 4 So He got up from supper, laid aside His robe, took a towel, and tied it around Himself. 5 Next, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel tied around Him.

It is important that we know who we are and where we are going. Are we as Christians on the solid foundation of CHRIST? This is why we need to have a solid, loving, dynamic relationship with CHRIST. JESUS made it clear that HE knew the FATHER and HIS power came from the FATHER. Our power comes from the FATHER through the indwelling and manifestation of the HOLY SPIRIT. HE knew where HE came from. HE was solid in HIS union with GOD, HIS FATHER. HE was in the right relationship with the FATHER. HE did not need to prove Himself. HE knew who HE was and HE knew HIS mission. HIS life and relationship with HIS FATHER was sufficient. This assurance and confidence gave HIM the freedom to obediently serve GOD and serve others as GOD led HIM.

JESUS, GOD’S ONLY SON, demonstrated HIS humility by washing the feet of HIS disciples. This was a job reserved for the lowest person in the group. HIS disciples had not taken on the task that evening because they did not want to appear to be the least of HIS disciples. Washing the feet of guests was the job of a Gentile servant, the youngest child in the family or a woman when they arrived at a home. Washing of the feet was needed because when folks traveled in that day their feet got dusty or dirty. Let’s continue.

Verses 12-15:
12 When Jesus had washed their feet and put on His robe, He reclined[2] again and said to them, “Do you know what I have done for you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord. This is well said, for I am. 14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example that you also should do just as I have done for you.

This was a teachable moment which CHRIST used to instruct HIS disciples then and Christians today. When HE finished washing and drying the feet of HIS disciples, HE taught. HE said, in essence, “If I being your Teacher and LORD, whose authority will be made manifest to you in the next few days, did not consider that I was too good to wash your feet, neither should you or any Christian consider any task to which the LORD calls you too menial.”

The key is that Christians must die to self and permit the HOLY SPIRIT to lead and guide their lives. When each Christian gives the HOLY SPIRIT permission to work in his/her life, HE produces change. This change is called fruit. The Apostle Paul gives us a clue about some of the fruit produced in our lives in Galatians 5:22-26:

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith,[5] 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, we must also follow the Spirit. 26 We must not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

When the HOLY SPIRIT works in our lives, HE will deal with our various negative flesh characteristics through the relationship we have with CHRIST. JESUS said it best in John 15:1-8:

The Vine and the Branches
1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vineyard keeper. 2 Every branch in Me that does not produce fruit He removes, and He prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in Me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me.

Are you firmly grafted into the vine? If you are, then you are in the right relationship with CHRIST and HIS power, vision, vitality flows into you and through you. When you are in right relationship with CHRIST then HE will produce the right fruit in your life. Let HIM produce humility in your life naturally through the power of the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT.

Bible Study - Roads Less Traveled - A LIfestyle of Community - Ephesians 4 - Janusry 2, 2011

Bible Study – Traveled – A Lifestyle of Community – January 2, 2011

This begins a new series entitled “The Roads Less Traveled.”

Our scripture is Ephesians 4:1-7, 14-16, 25-32.
For the next five (5) lessons we will study various scriptures which will lead us to consider our lifestyle as Christians. In this lesson, we will consider developing Christian community. Christian community can be through the church, the place where you work, your neighborhood, network of friends or other activities which bring people together.

When we interact with fellow Christians of other Christian denominations, outside our church, we often discover the commonality of our faith; which is CHRIST crucified and resurrected. When we strip away all the ritual and ceremonies, we see that the Christians of other Christian religions stand upon the solid rock of CHRIST as SAVIOR and LORD. Just keep in mind there is only one way to heaven and that is through CHRIST. GOD makes it very clear that no human can earn his/her way to heaven. The very best in each of us is as filthy rags compared to the righteousness of GOD. Whereas no person can measure up to GOD’S requirement, HE allowed HIS ONLY SON JESUS, to come to earth to live so that all who believe in HIM will be made righteous, thus acceptable to HIM. Paul makes this clear in 2 Corinthians 5:21:
21 He (GOD) made the One (JESUS) who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we (Those who believe in HIM) might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Notice the words “might become” indicates an on-going activity once a person becomes a Christian. The indwelling HOLY SPIRIT will lead and direct a new Christian’s life, provided the new Christian is willing to allow HIM to do so. GOD never takes away any person’s right to choose. The HOLY SPIRIT can teach and reveal truth in the “eyes of the heart” of Christians. Paul tells us in Ephesians 1:18-19 - 18 [I pray]* that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the glorious riches of His inheritance among the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power to us who believe, according to the working of His vast strength.

The Christian community is made up of Christians from all Christian denominations. When the Christian community leadership allows GOD, through the HOLY SPIRIT, to lead and guide them, they can provide the training for Christians to grow and mature Spiritually. The human ego often gets in the way and disrupts HIS leadership through programs. Organization and programs are important but only when the HOLY SPIRIT leads the Christian community leadership to the right training tools for that particular body of believers. In other words, do not have a program for the sake of having a program.

It is every Christian’s responsibility to build an intimate, loving relationship with GOD through CHRIST. When our hearts are in tune with the HOLY SPIRIT, HE leads us to the tools that help us grow and mature Spiritually. Ideally each Christian community will offer the tools. GOD may call you to lead certain training in your church.

Unity is critical in any Christian community. The non-Christians are looking at and observing anything called Christian. Factions and the lack of harmony are always fuel for the non-Christian and Christian communities to criticize.

Just as unity is critical for any marriage to grow and mature, unity is vital for us to learn, grow and mature within the Spiritual community in which we dwell. This is why in all aspects of our Spiritual growth and development the HOLY SPIRIT must lead, guide and direct. This begins with the Pastor, church staff and church leaders, which includes teachers, deacons/elders. It is often easy to stick with programs that have been used for years. They become sacred and we hang onto them in spite of the leadership and prompting of the HOLY SPIRIT to change. I am not saying to dump programs just because it has been around for a long time. I am saying seek the guidance of the HOLY SPIRIT for every aspect for teaching and leading church members to a deeper walk with our LORD.

Unity is vital in any Christian setting. The lack of unity is a barrier to Spiritual growth. This does not mean accepting various beliefs for the sake of unity. It means to seek your direction from the HOLY SPIRIT and deal with the things that are disrupting the unity, which often means hearts need to be brought into unity with the HOLY SPIRIT.

The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Christians in Ephesus. This was written while Paul was imprisoned in Rome for preaching the gospel. Because Paul was confined, he wrote the letter so that it could be used in other Christian churches in the area and applicable to all churches. His letter is relevant to all Christian churches today.

Let’s explore.

Let’s read Ephesians 4:1-6:
1 I, therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to • walk worthy of the calling you have received, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, accepting[1] one another in love, 3 diligently keeping the unity of the Spirit with the peace that binds [us]* . 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope[2] at your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.

Paul was writing from prison and wanted the people know that he was a willing prisoner because he captured by GOD’S love through the passion of CHRIST. He wanted everyone to know CHRIST as he did. Paul used the analogy of how the living body functions to show how the body of believers should function. Just as all parts of the human body work in unity carrying out different functions so should the body of believers.

Each individual Christian is called to be a living stone which forms the living church. The church building is brick, mortar, stone, siding, cement blocks, studs, rafters, etc. but the Christians who occupy the physical structure are the true church. The physical structure is a gathering place for worship and training. The success of Spiritual growth of the church family is measured by how much the pastor, staff and individuals allow the HOLY SPIRIT to lead and guide them.

In verses 1, 2 and 3, Paul listed qualities that Christians should possess. It is like in the old days it was important for children to be good representatives of their family and their family’s name. I remember hearing mothers or dads telling their children, “Remember who you are” or “We may be poor and we cannot help that but you can keep a good name and reputation.” This is what Paul was telling all Christians, “You who call yourself Christian need to remember who your FATHER is, therefore, walk worthy of your calling. Walk with all humility and gentleness, with patience, accepting one another in love, diligently keeping the unity of the Spirit with the peace that binds [us].”

Notice how Paul emphasized “one.” Christians are one because they have the same FATHER. Christians are born into GOD’S family the instant they ask CHRIST to forgive them for their sins and for HIM to come into their lives. Christians are led by the same and only one HOLY SPIRIT. The HOLY SPIRIT is one with GOD and JESUS – Unity!!!

In verses 4, 5 and 6 Paul covers the oneness of Christians. Just as GOD, JESUS and the HOLY SPIRIT are one, Christians are to be one with the Trinity and one with fellow Christians. This is why Christians must be in relationship with CHRIST so they will be in unity with CHRIST, WHO in turn is in unity with GOD and the HOLY SPIRIT. This is why Christians must be in the right relationship with CHRIST. Christians are saved by grace and GOD equips them to serve HIM as we will see in verse 7.

Let’s read Ephesians 4:7, 11-16:
7 Now grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of the • Messiah’s gift.

What is the Messiah’s gift? First and foremost HE gave all who believe in HIM salvation, which is the miracle of rebirth. HE gave HIS life to pay the penalty for sin, which was death. How do we know that HE conquered sin and death? It is because GOD raised HIM from the dead after HIS crucifixion thus conquering death. Our faith is in a living SAVIOR. ONE WHO conquered death.

When we receive CHRIST we receive eternal life, the indwelling of the HOLY SPIRIT and become a child of GOD. This begins the life long process of sanctification as we grow and mature Spiritually. GOD gives additional gifts to HIS children in order for them to carry out HIS plans and purpose upon earth and to minister to the living body of believers. HE does not equip everyone with the same gift or gifts. In fact, diversity in the Christian community is good because through diversity the living body is ministered to in a variety of ways to help it become stronger. Paul listed some of the gifts which GOD equips HIS children according to how HE chooses for their lives in our next scripture.

Verses 11-16:
11 And He personally gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12 for the training of the saints in the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God’s Son, [growing]* into a mature man with a stature measured by Christ’s fullness. 14 Then we will no longer be little children, tossed by the waves and blown around by every wind of teaching, by human cunning with cleverness in the techniques of deceit. 15 But speaking the truth in love, let us grow in every way into Him who is the head—Christ. 16 From Him the whole body, fitted and knit together by every supporting ligament, promotes the growth of the body for building up itself in love by the proper working of each individual part.

Paul listed some of the gifts GOD gives for the purpose of ministering to the living body of Christians, who are the living stones, to produce unity, Spiritual growth and maturity within the body of Christians. HE calls HIS children to be apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers for the purpose of training the saints. Who are the saints? No, not the New Orleans Saints, although just as physical training is vital for an athlete, Spiritual training is just as vital for Christians to play in the game of life. Christians have an opponent, Satan and game day is every day.

As we study this scripture, we see that GOD gives gifts for the purpose of ministering to the living body of Christians so they will not be tossed about with every wind of doctrine. GOD’S desire is for all Christians to be in unity with each other Spiritually. Since all Christians have the same foundation for their faith, CHRIST, unity in the Spirit is achievable. Just think how much Christians could influence the world for CHRIST, if we all dropped our denominational barriers and served CHRIST as a unified living body led and guided by the HOLY SPIRIT to influence the world. Satan loves for Christians not to be unified.

Paul gave all Christians a Spiritual fact. Once Christians are in relationship and unity with CHRIST, they are no longer tossed about by every wind of doctrine. Once they know the truth of the Gospel and know CHRIST, their hearts desire is to obediently serve HIM as HE leads and directs them through the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT. As an individual Christian grows into unity with GOD, he/she will grow into unity with fellow Christians who are growing and maturing Spiritually as well. The life and vitality of any body of believers is to grow and mature Spiritually, as led and guided by the HOLY SPIRIT.

To me the missing part in many churches is their failure to seek and rely upon the leadership and guidance of the HOLY SPIRIT. The wrong emphasis can be placed on the gifts of the HOLY SPIRIT, which results in glorifying man. Spiritual maturity is vital to avoid the misuse of Spiritual gifts.

Paul tied this all together by using the human body as an example of what he was talking about. Just as the human body is one and functions as one and all parts are in harmony with each other, so should the living body of Christians function as one. A unified body is the strongest and most efficient way to serve GOD and achieve HIS plans and purpose. But why is the unified body difficult to achieve? Paul gives us some clues in our next scripture.

Let’s read Ephesians 4:25-32:
25 Since you put away lying, Speak the truth, each one to his neighbor,[13] because we are members of one another. 26 Be angry and do not sin.[14] [15] Don’t let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and don’t give the Devil an opportunity. 28 The thief must no longer steal. Instead, he must do honest work with his own hands, so that he has something to share with anyone in need. 29 No rotten talk should come from your mouth, but only what is good for the building up of someone in need,[16] in order to give grace to those who hear. 30 And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit, who sealed you[17] for the day of redemption. 31 All bitterness, anger and wrath, insult and slander must be removed from you, along with all wickedness. 32 And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you[18] in Christ.

Many of us think how wonderful it would be if we could function as Paul has challenged us. What gets in our way? Do we live according to the flesh or the Spirit? If we say we live according to the Spirit then we must practice what we preach. Paul tells us in verse 25, “Since you have put away lying, speak the truth.” James in the Book of James wrote about the tongue in James 1:19-20:

19 My dearly loved brothers, understand this: everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, 20 for man’s anger does not accomplish God’s righteousness.

Paul had presented the unity of the body to his readers and raised, in essence, the question, “Would you lie to your own body? No! If your hand was about to be cut off, would you lie to your hand and tell it, “Oh don’t worry everything is fine? No! Therefore do not lie to one another because you are all one body.” The problem is that it is hard for us to honestly see other Christians as unified with us because we are ------ and we can fill in the blanks with many things such as “We are more Spiritual.” The fact is if we were more Spiritual our hearts desire would be for them to become more Spiritual than we are and help them to do so, as called by GOD. The human flesh gets in the way. We all wrestle with the flesh.

Paul told his readers to “Be angry.” What was he saying? I think he was saying, be angry at the things that make GOD angry. GOD loves the sinner but HE hates sin. GOD’S desire is for all of HIS children to allow the HOLY SPIRIT to lead and direct their lives but most of us don’t. Christians get angry when they see people, especially family members and friends, who they know are headed for sure destruction, unless their lives are turned around. The scourge of addictions makes me angry because of the lives I have seen ruined because of drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, etc.

We all know Christians get angry for all the wrong reasons and when we do Paul tell us to not let the sun go down on our anger. This is true for our loved ones – our children, spouse, friends, etc. – we need to apologize if we have treated someone wrong during the day. Why? Paul tells us when we try to sweep a wrong we have done under the rug, so-to-speak, we give Satan an opportunity to create barriers in our lives and in the lives of those we have wronged. If we are Spiritual people then we need to keep the slate clean and not give Satan a toe hold into our lives.

Then Paul listed several things Christians need to do to reflect the character of GOD in their lives – The thief must steal no longer. The thief needs to earn an honest living. Christians need to watch their speech. They are to guard what they say and how they say it (tone). No rotten talk should come from their mouth. Rotten talk includes speech that tears down another person. Christians need to either say nothing or when they do to consider the grace that GOD extends to them and extend that same grace to others. This is not remaining silent when you need to take action.

Paul told his readers not to grieve the HOLY SPIRIT. The HOLY SPIRIT is a person. HE is the third part of the Trinity. It is the HOLY SPIRIT WHO seals all Christians for the day of redemption. The HOLY SPIRIT confirms a Christian’s salvation and is GOD’S down payment or security deposit to all Christians.

Paul listed some of the things that humans possess which grieve the HOLY SPIRIT - bitterness, anger and wrath, insult and slander. These attributes must be dealt with. Paul stated that, “They must be removed from you, along with all wickedness.” This is the work of the HOLY SPIRIT to bring these attributes to our attention and then to help us deal with them. When the HOLY SPIRIT helps Christians to deal with these negative attributes, HE helps Christians to replace them with positive attributes which Paul listed - be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in CHRIST. Paul gave us a list of the fruit produced by the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT in Galatians 5:22-26:

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith,[5] 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, we must also follow the Spirit. 26 We must not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

This is heavy. That is why Christians must have the right relationship with CHRIST or else it is impossible for Christians to deal with these things in their own strength. Having the right relationship with CHRIST also means you will have the right relationship with the HOLY SPIRIT and with GOD. It is the HOLY SPIRIT that opens the “eyes of our hearts” to truth, understanding and application as HE leads and guides those willing to yield their lives to HIM. The HOLY SPIRIT empowers Christians to live as GOD desires for them to live and serve HIM.

What is your Christian community like? Is it a community in which you are growing and maturing Spiritually? If not, why? Is it you or the community?

Another year has pasted. Are you in a deeper relationship with CHRIST this year than you were this time last year? If not and you want to be then confess it and ask GOD to show you what you need to do to build a deeper relationship with HIM. HE may be calling you to help train the saints. As a teacher, I benefit greatly from preparing these lessons. But I realize every day that I am a sinner saved by HIS grace. Blessings to all and a HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR. May we all, when we look back this time next year, see that we have grown and matured Spiritually and in deeper relationship with our SAVIOR and LORD JESUS CHRIST.
