Bible Study – Wisdom (5) – The Problem with Wealth – March 31, 2019


This is lesson five (5) in our series entitled “Finding Meaning: Wisdom from Ecclesiastes.”


Our focus scripture is Ecclesiastes 5:10-20.


Contentment comes from CHRIST, not our wealth.


The Jews considered anyone with wealth was blessed by GOD, which can be true or false. The Bible has much to say about money e.g. as recorded in 1 Timothy 6:10 - 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. 

Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.


Money is not evil but the “love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.”


As recorded in Psalm 1: 1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,


2 but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law, day and night.

3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.

4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.



GOD does bless with many forms of wealth e.g. health, friends, children, peace, satisfaction of work, loving family, etc. which cannot be purchased.



Let’s explore!



Let’s read Ecclesiastes 5:10-12:

10 Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless.

11 As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owners except to feast their eyes on them?

12 The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether they eat little or much, but as for the rich, their abundance permits them no sleep.



King Solomon had observed that those who have wealth want more and they attract plenty of people to help them spend it. How much is enough? Well, I can tell you, just a little bit more.



There are human money sniffing vultures who do not care about the person with the wealthy but they love their money. There are those who will suck up to the wealth just to take advantage of them.



The wealthy need hired help to work for them to take care of what they have or maintain it. The laborer sleeps well at night but the person with wealth has difficulty sleeping.



Why does the person with wealth have difficulty sleeping?



Let’s read Ecclesiastes 5:13-17:



13 I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners,

14 or wealth lost through some misfortune, so that when they have children there is nothing left for them to inherit.

15 Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb, and as everyone comes, so they depart. They take nothing from their toil that they can carry in their hands.

16 This too is a grievous evil: As everyone comes, so they depart, and what do they gain, since they toil for the wind?

17 All their days they eat in darkness, with great frustration, affliction and anger.



King Solomon has witnessed grievous evil during his life upon earth e.g. wealth hoarded resulted in harm to its owners or wealth poorly invested resulted misfortune. Greed can be a problem, that is hanging onto an investment hoping to get a few more dollars from it and it quickly goes south. Ouch!



Have you either witnessed such tragedy or heard of such tragedies. When I hear such stories, I generally say, “oh, but I would be different?” Would I? Would you?



Solomon speaks words of wisdom – a person enters the world naked and leaves the world naked and empty handed. No person takes earthly wealth with him or her. But what can a person do?



There are those who toil and never enjoy the fruit of their efforts. Why? How should we live? Solomon has the answer ----



Ecclesiastes 5:18-20:

18 This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot.

19 Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God.

20 They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.



GOD made mankind to enjoy life upon earth within the bounds of obediently serving HIM.



The Apostle Paul recorded in Philippians 4:12-13:

12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.



When we toil to accumulate, we want more and are often miserable. We need an attitude adjustment. When we realize that GOD is the source of our wealth or work, we should enjoy what GOD has allowed us to earn and use during our time upon earth. When we realize that all we have is on loan from GOD, we are to work and tend the garden in which HE has placed us. Then we can seek GOD'S guidance as to where HE desires for us to use the fruit from the work, HE has given to us.



Often, we may ask well why hasn’t GOD given us more?  We read why as recorded in Matthew 7:9-11:

9 “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?

10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?

11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!



GOD does not give us things that will harm us. Yes, GOD made us to use our gifts to work and enjoy the fruits of our labor. But we need to recognize and acknowledge GOD in our lives and work to glorify HIM. When we do, we are content in our work because we are working as unto our LORD.  



As the old saying goes “Bloom where you are planted.”

This is lesson four (4) in our series entitled “Finding Meaning: Wisdom from Ecclesiastes.”

Our focus scripture is Ecclesiastes 2:18-23; 3:9-13.

Our work gains meaning when it’s done to honor CHRIST.

In this lesson, we will explore work. Let’s consider the Garden of Eden as recorded in Genesis 2:4-10 and 2:15-17 and 3:8-9:

4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.

5 Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground,

6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.

7 Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.

9 The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters.



Genesis 2:15-17:



15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to “work it and take care of it.”  (my quotes)

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;

17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”



Adam had to work before he sinned but his work became “toil” or “burdensome” after he sinned.



Genesis 3:8-9:

8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

9 But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”



GOD ordained work to benefit mankind; to give mankind something to do while people were upon earth. GOD placed restrictions upon mankind, “you can eat the fruit from all the trees except one.” GOD had fellowship with mankind. GOD walked in the Garden in the cool of the evening until mankind sinned. Sin broke their fellowship and because of sin, mankind was sentenced to eternal death.



Mankind made the decision to disobey GOD, thus it requires a decision for each individual to be redeemed from the sentence of eternal death for eternal life to be restored to each person.



Sin changed the DNA of mankind from eternal life to eternal death. That is why every person needs a radical change in their lives for him or her to get new Spiritual DNA that only comes from GOD. GOD provided that radical change by allowing HIS Only Son, JESUS, to come to earth and be born as a human, to live as a human and subjected to the possibility of being tempted in all ways as humans are tempted. In order for JESUS to fulfill GOD’S plan to abolish sin in a person’s life, JESUS had to give HIS perfect life to pay, in full, the penalty for sin. As stated earlier, a person must have Spiritual DNA and comes only through the miracle of Spiritual rebirth through faith in JESUS.



Whereas a person who places his or her faith in JESUS, his or her Spiritual DNA is instantly changed by the miracle of Spiritual rebirth. The consequences of original sin continue while the redeemed live upon earth in their earth suits or flesh. But in the twinkling of the eye those in CHRIST will step forth from their human bodies into eternity displaying their new Heavenly bodies fashioned by GOD. WOW! What a day that will be! Those in CHRIST will be home.



Another consequence of sin was work, as we read in Genesis 3:17-19:



17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.

18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.

19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”



Sin has consequences but to GOD be the Glory as we read in Romans 5:8 - 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.



GOD made a path for every human to escape eternal death and to be restored to the original eternal life HE had first designed mankind to have. That is for every human to place his or her faith in JESUS, HIS only SON.



Let’s read Ecclesiastes 2:18-23:

18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.



Solomon realized that all he had toiled for did not bring him closer to the meaning of life. He further realized that he had labored hard to produce things and these things would continue after his death. Solomon was wise and he had observed enough of life that he had seen fortunes left to family members who squandered it on frivolous things. Soon, what they had was gone. The great equalizer is death both for the wise and the fool.



19 And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish? Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless.



Whoever comes after him whether he will be wise or foolish, he will have control of what Solomon had amassed. After death he loses any control over his things, so why accumulate things. It is meaningless.



King Solomon’s son, Rehoboam, would be the successor to his throne. History reveals that Rehoboam was an evil and weak king. He lost much of his father’s territory, which resulted in Israel being divided into the Northern and Southern Kingdoms. Solomon’s glorious kingdom was crumbling after his death.



20 So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun.



All physical work is very hard and burdensome. It benefits you for your life upon earth but once you are dead, others take over.



21 For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune.

22 What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun?

23 All their days their work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not rest. This too is meaningless.



A person may apply wisdom. Knowledge and skill to his projects but the bottom line is, he or she will leave it behind. People toil to accumulate but what do they get? They get tired, anxious, sleepless nights. The question is - “Is it worth all the toil when you consider you will leave it all behind?” Pursuing goals and achieving them gives personal satisfaction. It gives us something to do and it often provides others with jobs, entertainment, etc. The key is for Christians to allow the Holy Spirit to lead us as we consider what our LORD desires for us to do.



Let’s read Ecclesiastes 3:9-13:



9 What do workers gain from their toil?

10 I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race.



GOD ordained work even in the Garden of Eden. We do not know how hard it was to work in the Garden of Eden but we know how hard it is to work on earth. But it is interesting, as recorded in Genesis 2:5 Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground,



GOD knew that mankind would need to work because HE knew mankind would sin and need to occupy their time upon earth until they go into eternity.



11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.



Again, Solomon states that GOD has made everything beautiful upon earth and HE has placed the continuation of life beyond life upon earth in the human heart. Solomon knew GOD gave him wisdom and the height, width and depth of what GOD has done cannot be fathomed. The Apostle Paul came close to describing it in Romans 11:33-35:



33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!

34 “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?”

35 “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?”

36 For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.



Back to Ecclesiastes 9:12-13:



12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.

13 That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.



As recorded in Deuteronomy 29:29 The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.



Who can know the mind of GOD? First Corinthians 2:11:



11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.



But we also know as recorded in Isaiah 55:8:



8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD.



2 Peter 1:3:



3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.



GOD has gifted each person with physical life. Mankind lost its eternal life due to sin but GOD has provided a path for every person to regain his or her eternal life through faith in JESUS. Acknowledge and embrace GOD by praising HIM for the gift of life found only in faith in JESUS. Blessings!!!

Bible Study – Wisdom (3) – The Problem with Wisdom – March 17, 2019


This is lesson two (2) in our series entitled “Finding Meaning: Wisdom from Ecclesiastes.”


Our focus scripture is Ecclesiastes 2:12-17; 7:23-29.


Wisdom is grounded in trust in GOD.


What is wisdom? Wisdom is knowledge applied to GOD’S plan.


Knowledge is not the same as wisdom. It is the application of knowledge that is important. Then there is Spiritual knowledge which comes from obediently serving GOD as led by the indwelling Holy Spirit and Biblical knowledge which comes from reading and studying the Bible.

We must seek truth and develop Spiritual maturity based upon truth. Let’s explore!


The Hebrew word for “wisdom” carries the idea of knowledge in combination with skill, shrewdness and prudence. Madness carries the idea of “acting like a madman or like a fool.” These are some of life’s choices. Folly carries the idea of “acting or doing foolishly” or “stupidity.”


What is King Solomon trying to solve? He is trying to solve the “meaning of life” and he is exploring every conceivable path. Up to this point all has been empty. Now he was going to put wisdom to the test. We need to keep in mind that GOD granted him wisdom as recorded in 1 Kings 3: 9-14:

9 So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”


[This has a familiar ring to it. Consider the Garden of Eden – Genesis 3:15-17:


15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;

17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”]



So, what is the difference. Eve and Adam sinned by disobeying GOD, whereas King Solomon asked GOD to give him a discerning heart, which would be in the depths of his being or the “eyes of his heart.”



10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this.

11 So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice,

12 I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.

13 Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings.

14 And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.”



How does GOD teach us? We explore and that was exactly what GOD was leading Solomon to do and he was discovering the things life has to offer are meaningless and empty. So, he turned to consider wisdom, which leads us to verse 12 ----



Let’s read Ecclesiastes 2:12-17:


12 Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom, and also madness and folly. What more can the king’s successor do than what has already been done?



King Solomon had concluded that everything else he had tried had not produced any new revelation so he changed his focus. He decided to weigh or contrast wisdom against madness and folly, which we learn later that he considered these choices some people made.



He thought about his successor. He had the means and the opportunity to do it all and he had worked diligently to explore the issues life offered to mankind to find meaning to life. He concluded that all the life under the sun was empty and meaningless.



Since GOD had given him the gift of wisdom, could his successor learn anything new? The answer is a resounding NO!



13 I saw that wisdom is better than folly, just as light is better than darkness.

14 The wise have eyes in their heads, while the fool walks in the darkness; but I came to realize that the same fate overtakes them both.



At least wisdom got a vote of confidence from Solomon. He compared wisdom to folly and reasoned that wisdom was better. Wisdom was like light compared to the darkness of folly and other choices people make. Those who seek wisdom and put what they discover into action, may still suffer surprises along life’s journey but the wise have considered that possibility. The wise have a contingency plan should they encounter a surprise. However, the madman or foolish have not considered the possibility of a surprise along life’s journey and have no contingency. The wise still may have surprises in life but they have a plan of action.



King Solomon, came to a profound realization. There is a fate that will overtake both the wise and the foolish. What do you think that fate is regardless of whether a person is wise or unwise? Let’s read on ----



15 Then I said to myself, “The fate of the fool will overtake me also. What then do I gain by being wise?” I said to myself, “This too is meaningless.”

16 For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered; the days have already come when both have been forgotten. Like the fool, the wise too must die!



King Solomon realized whether a person is wise or a fool, both will die. Death is the great equalizer. Why is this a vital conclusion? Who has been left out of the thing’s life has to offer a person? Both the wise and the foolish must consider eternity. Both will go into eternity whether they want to or not because death comes to every person. Does this mean life is meaningless? Or should mankind consider and even more baffling matter. Where do we go when we die? Is there life after death? Will there be eternal judgment? Certainly, life upon earth was nothing but toil.




17 So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.

19 And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish? Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless.



The word “grievous” in verse 17 also carries the idea of “bad” or “evil.” Had the work he had done robbed him of the time he could have spent building the right relationship with GOD and being a Godly example to his people?



When we discover truth, we want to share it with others. Sometimes we discover the truth of JESUS late in life and wish we had discovered HIM sooner. It is important that we not look back but to look forward to the time we have remaining upon earth and obediently serve our LORD as HE gives us opportunity. Remember Ephesians 1:4-5:

4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love

5 he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—



HE knew when you would accept HIM and HE has a plan for the rest of your life.



Let’s read Ecclesiastes 7:23-25:

23 All this I tested by wisdom and I said, “I am determined to be wise”— but this was beyond me.



We need to keep in mind that GOD granted Solomon wisdom. Wisdom comes in two packages: (1) Wisdom from GOD (2) Wisdom from the world. King Solomon used wisdom to test the things he explored. He was intentional in using wisdom “I am determined to be wise.” Why? It was because he had a choice and wisdom was the best choice. But even with this thought in mind, his determination to gain full comprehension of the meaning of life was beyond him. It did not work. He had attempted to use “practical wisdom” instead of “absolute wisdom.” He learned that absolute wisdom was far beyond his or any humans reach. Practical wisdom was insufficient to grasp completely or fully understand. Why? Considering the things of earth and the part of the universe he could see was one thing but when he considered the vastness of the heavens and the depths of the oceans it was more than his finite mind could comprehend. Some things a person must trust to GOD.



24 Whatever exists is far off and most profound— who can discover it?



King Solomon came to the realization that there are some things that are so far beyond human ability that they must be revealed by GOD, according to HIS time. Man can search, seek and attempt but only GOD can reveal in HIS time. The birth of JESUS came at just the right time. All the seeking and exploring mankind could do would not reveal the exact time for the coming of JESUS. Even when JESUS lived upon earth, no human knew what HIS death upon the cross would mean. And just as vital and critical to mankind and for all who place their faith in the passion of JESUS is HIS resurrection by GOD. The resurrection of JESUS is proof that JESUS lived a sinless life upon earth and in doing so was the only sacrifice for the sins of mankind. The first Adam failed but the second Adam, JESUS, was victorious over sin and doing so restored eternal life to all who place their faith in HIM. Do you recall 1 Corinthians 2:6-7:



6 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.

7 No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.

8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.



25 So I turned my mind to understand, to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things and to understand the stupidity of wickedness and the madness of folly.



So, King Solomon had reached an end-point. He decided upon a new approach to understand, to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things or an explanation of things. He had discovered the “stupidity of wickedness” and the “madness of folly.” He had discovered that stupidity, folly and madness are choices people make or fail to escape from them once they realize they can choose wisdom.

What is the saying, insanity is to keep doing what doesn’t work in hopes it will turn our different? Often, we see bad choices repeated in families and institutions such as government.



Often, many of us need to change directions in our lives. When we realize we need to change our thinking that is the moment to do it. Do not delay because time is wasting.



Pursuing wisdom is always better than pursuing stupidity, folly or madness.



Let’s read Ecclesiastes 7:26-29:

26 I find more bitter than death the woman who is a snare, whose heart is a trap and whose hands are chains. The man who pleases God will escape her, but the sinner she will ensnare.



King Solomon with 700 wives and 300 concubines certainly should have known females. Life upon earth can be worse then death when a person is entangled with the wrong person. But there is hope for the person who trusts in GOD for there will be away of escape but those who do not have the right relationship with GOD will always be ensnared.



Why? Is it because their flesh causes them to hang-on? What else?



27 “Look,” says the Teacher, “this is what I have discovered: “Adding one thing to another to discover the scheme of things—



King Solomon was a builder which required many calculations. In other words, when you add it all up you learn that it doesn’t because there is another factor and that is motives. There are good motives and hidden motives and you are ensnared before you can figure it our unless you are a person of GOD. GOD can give you as heads up if your desire is to obediently serve HIM.



28 while I was still searching but not finding— I found one upright man among a thousand, but not one upright woman among them all.



In all of Solomon’s dealing with people he had found one in a thousand who measured up to being trustworthy and dependable. But not one upright woman among them all. WOW! Deceit, guile, bad motives, Solomon must have encountered among women. What had all of this resulted in?



29 This only have I found: God created mankind upright, but they have gone in search of many schemes.”



He found one thing, “God created mankind upright, but they have gone in search of many schemes.”



King Solomon goes back to the Garden od Eden. GOD created Adam and Eve, the foundation for mankind, “upright.” If GOD did this what went wrong? “They have gone in search of many schemes.” Eve desired to be wise and ate the forbidden fruit and offered a bite to Adam and he ate it as well. At that instant, they lost their innocence. They realized they were naked because they sinned. They also, lost eternal life because of their sin. Not only did they lose their eternal life but all of their offspring until the end of time also lost their eternal life.



But what was lost due to sin, GOD has restored for all who place their faith in JESUS as their Savior and LORD. Why did GOD do this? John 3:16-18 captures HIS reason in a most excellent way:



16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.



GOD and JESUS did this just for you to be restored to HIS original intent for mankind. If you have not asked JESUS to forgive you for your sins believing that HE gave HIS sinless life by the shedding of HIS blood, do so right now. When you do, thank HIM for saving your soul. Welcome to GOD’S Family through the miracle of rebirth for eternity. Now, live obediently for HIM as HE leads and directs your life by the indwelling Holy Spirit. Blessings!!!

Bible Study – Wisdom (2) – The Problem with Pleasure – March 10, 2019


This is lesson two (2) in our series entitled “Finding Meaning: Wisdom from Ecclesiastes.”


Our focus scripture is Ecclesiastes 2:1-11.


Pleasures and possessions don’t offer lasting joy.


Our world thrives on pleasure and getting more possessions. King Solomon had it all but what did he learn by having it all? Let’s explore!


In last week’s study, in Ecclesiastes 1-2: 1 The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem: 2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”

3 What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun?

Shortly after Solomon was crowned king, GOD asked him a very important question as recorded in 1 King 3:5-15:



5 At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”

6 Solomon answered, “You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day.

7 “Now, LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties.

8 Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number.

9 So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this.

11 So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice,

12 I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.

13 Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings.

14 And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.”

15 Then Solomon awoke—and he realized it had been a dream. He returned to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the Lord’s covenant and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then he gave a feast for all his court.



We read that GOD went beyond Solomon’s request. Our response to questions reveals much about our heart, when we respond honestly.



When King Solomon references the word “myself,” he is referring to his heart or the inner most part of his being or the Apostle Paul wrote “the eyes of our heart.” This is where truth resides.



Let’s read Ecclesiastes 2:1-3:


1 I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good.” But that also proved to be meaningless.

2Laughter,” I said, “is madness. And what does pleasure accomplish?”

3 I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing folly—my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives.



King Solomon decided to conduct an experiment. He would be the guinea pig. He planned to determine if the pleasures the world offered were sustainable. Sustainable to what? Was he using GOD as the standard for comparison?



What are these pleasures? Can he judge fairly? He stated, “I said to myself.” Myself is a reference to his heart. He approached this experience with complete confidence that when the experiment concluded he would know the answer. So, what will he test? He will test “pleasure” and “laughter.” Laughter often accompanies pleasure.



What did he conclude? Pleasure was meaningless and laughter was madness. We see this depicted in many ads attempting to show an example of the good life. These ads fail to show the heartache that can occur when people get caught up in of these social depictions.



Laughter suggests the idea of fun and relaxion. But when we are afraid what do we do? Have you heard the statement, “whistling past the graveyard?” We may whistle in scary situations to help us keep our minds off something bad happening. Laughter can also be a diversion of insecurity. Laughter can be faked.



Then Solomon tried wine and embraced folly. He stated that even when he imbibed, his mind was focused upon wisdom of his actions and what followed as a result. After all, he was a researcher and life is short.



We do not know, but was he trying to justify the things he was doing? We read about the things he tried in a few sentences but we need to realize that these experiments covered long periods of time as we read on ----.



Let’s read Ecclesiastes 2:4-8:

4 I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards.

5 I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them.

6 I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees.

7 I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me.

8 I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I acquired male and female singers, and a harem as well—the delights of a man’s heart.



Again, we read about these time-consuming projects e.g. houses, buildings, vineyards, gardens, fruit trees. He had reservoirs and cisterns built to gather water both for drinking and watering these gardens, fruit trees and flowering trees.



All of these creations require people to maintain them. These servants need housing and food. Solomon had plenty of servants both male and female in order to maintain his servant population. He had to have plenty of food, thus he had herds and flocks. Generally, they used the products produced by an animal e.g. cheese and the wool.



Solomon amassed huge amounts of gold and silver. Silver was considered of low value because gold was so plentiful. Solomon had more wealth than he knew what to do with because the surrounding kingdoms that his father, David, had subdued sent tribute to David.



Solomon brought in male and female singers/entertainers, a harem which gave opportunity to appeal to the “delights of a man’s heart.”



Yes, Solomon had it all but his freedom led to GOD being very displeased with him. Keep in mind that this experiment took time and GOD was not included. Was Solomon being a positive representative for GOD compromised?



Notice the number of times “I” was used in these scripture passages.



Let’s read Ecclesiastes 2:9-11:

9 I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before me. In all this my wisdom stayed with me.

10 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my labor, and this was the reward for all my toil.

11 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.



Solomon reached his goal. He was more prosperous than anyone before him. He set a high bar should anyone try to outdo him.



Yes, through it all Solomon maintained his wisdom or did he because true wisdom comes from GOD. He did it all and he enjoyed every minute of it. In fact, his heart delighted in it.



When he considered all that he had done he felt fulfilled but when the dust settled, he came to the conclusion that it was all meaningless and empty. It was like chasing the wind. Yes, he had accomplished much but once he accomplished his objective, it was of little value to him and their contribution to mankind.



What was missing?



There is no mention of GOD. But we do know that Solomon had altars established to satisfy his foreign wives. He had accumulated 700 wives and 300 concubines.



Solomon was looking back over a lifetime of achievements. Yes, the achievements were spectacular but they had no lasting effect. He considered that he had chased the wind. Did he realize that he should have spent his time worshipping GOD and building the right relationship with HIM and leading others to build the right relationship with GOD? Did he realize that he could have lived such that his life would have been a testimony to the one true GOD of the Israelite’s and in doing so what he had done would transcend life upon earth? After all wisdom comes from GOD but it must be applied by putting it into action.  



As King David faced his last moments upon earth, he gave Solomon some advice as recorded in 1 Kings 2:1-4:



1 When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son.

2 “I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man,

3 and observe what the LORD your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go

4 and that the LORD may keep his promise to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.



Will we learn from Solomon? Will we focus upon that which has lasting value or that which is like chasing the wind? Placing one’s faith in JESUS as your Savior is the beginning of wisdom. It is a starting point. If you are already a Christian but have not been living for JESUS, then confess and repent. Rededicate your life to JESUS and start obediently serving HIM. HE has not moved, HE loves you and HIS desire is for you to obediently serve HIM. What we do in obedience to GOD’S commands transcends earthly treasure to heavenly treasure. Wisdom comes from GOD.
