Big Picture - 2 Peter, 1Thessalonians 4 and 5 - August 2, 2009

Sunday School Lesson – Big Picture – August 2, 2009

This begins a new study series entitled “Finding and Following God’s Will.”

Our scripture for our first study is 2 Peter 3:8-9, 1 Thessalonians 4:1-5; 5:15-22.

Finding and following the will of GOD is what most all believers desire to do. Many believers begin to do what they believe is the will of GOD based upon their understanding of GOD, which is based upon all sorts of knowledge sources. One would think if a believer has the desire to do the will of GOD, GOD would honor whatever knowledge source. GOD is truth and HE will not support a lie but HE will expose the lie and lead believers to truth and true knowledge of HIM.

So what is GOD’S will? First, HE wants all people to become Christians. Then HE wants believers to build upon the foundation of CHRIST. Since the passion of CHRIST all believers have direct access to GOD through CHRIST. All believers are in essence priests. This is referred to as the priesthood of the believer. That is why every believer can go directly to GOD, in the name of JESUS. Believers need to grow and mature spiritually. So, how do believers discern GOD’S will?

The Bible is clear we are to seek HIM first, which is to get to know HIM as we build an intimate relationship with HIM. We do that through the study of the Bible, talking to HIM in prayer and responding to HIS call for us to obediently serve HIM. GOD is the same yesterday, today and forever. HE is not fickle. That is why the study of HIS Word is vital in getting to really know HIM. Knowing HIM is vastly different from knowing about HIM. When we apply what we really know about HIM it is then we get to really know HIM. Serving HIM can either reveal false notions we have about HIM or confirm the truth we can count upon. GOD likes for believers to interact with HIM and learn the truth themselves. Believers cannot grow and mature relying on other believers experiences. Being a believer should be a dynamic relationship with GOD through CHRIST. But having such a relationship is the believer’s choice.

To me one of the best workbooks to guide us to know and understand the will of GOD is “Experiencing God – Knowing and Doing the Will of God” written about 19 years ago by Dr. Henry T. Blackaby and Claude V. King, published by LifeWay Press in Nashville, TN. It is available through the Baptist Bookstore. There is a workbook but there is also a DVD of Dr. Blackaby, which is a tremendous help as you ponder each lesson in the workbook. To me it is different from any study course, I have taken.
When my wife and I went through the workbook, we had our own workbook. We shared only what we wanted to share with each other. This is a personal time between you and GOD. To me, it is a time when you must be completely honest with GOD. I know that is the way I began my workbook. I told GOD I had some issues with HIM that we needed to get straight between us and that I would not go from one lesson to another without us resolving those issues as revealed in each lesson. I was equally sure HE had issues with me. I wanted us to use this time to get all of our issues out in the open and we did. It was a major growth step in my spiritual journey in building a more intimate relationship with HIM. You cannot build a relationship unless you are completely honest with GOD. Nothing can be hidden. It is not pretty but guess what – GOD knows all of our hang-ups and knows us intimately even to the number of hairs on our heads.

Our study this week study is a foundational message:

- First we must be on a firm spiritual foundation. That is, we must have asked CHRIST to forgive us of our sins, believe that HE died upon the cross for our sins and ask HIM to come into our life. This is fundamental to know GOD and build a relationship with HIM. If you are unsure whether or not you have asked CHRIST into your life, ask HIM to forgive you of your sins, acknowledge that HE died upon the cross for your sins and for HIM to come into your life. When you make that decision, thank HIM because in that instant you are a born-again believer and you are a child of GOD through the miracle of rebirth.

- Once a person becomes a believer, he/she has the HOLY SPIRIT WHO will teach, enlighten, confirm, assure and lead the new believer to all truth. This is the process of spiritual growth, which is sanctification. Sanctification does not happen in a flash but begins by committing our lives to serve HIM and allowing GOD, through the HOLY SPIRIT, to lead and guide us instead of our flesh. This can only happen through relationship; that is, realizing we cannot serve GOD in our own strength but as we get to know HIM, trust HIM and build confidence in HIM. HE empowers us through this relationship by the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT. Does this mean our spiritual journey will be easy? NO!!! But it will be a journey fully knowing that you are doing the will of GOD in an evil world ruled by Satan. Believers are living and serving in enemy territory. Sanctification is a lifelong journey of getting to really know GOD through Bible study, talking to HIM in prayer and obediently serving HIM. Why do I use “obediently serve HIM?” It is easy for a believer, in his/her zeal wanting to do something for GOD, to launch his/her own service agenda. GOD allows believers to launch their own agenda to bring them to the realization that they are doing their own thing and are not doing things according to HIS plan and purpose. Let GOD lead you into serving HIM through relationship. In my opinion, when you are in right relationship with GOD though CHRIST, you are always in the will of the FATHER.

- A believer’s spiritual journey will not be easy. It is through our relationship that we learn to trust HIM and confidently serve HIM when bad times come our way. Easier said than done but when we get through the tough times, we are stronger in our relationship with HIM.

Let’s read 2 Peter 3:8-9:

8 Dear friends, don’t let this one thing escape you: with the Lord one day is like 1,000 years, and 1,000 years like one day. 9 The Lord does not delay His promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance.

The Apostle Peter had encountered some people who were trying to discourage believers. The Christians were looking for the coming of the LORD. These non-believers were chiding beleivers by telling them their faith was in vain, because CHRIST had not returned and would not return, so why follow CHRIST.

Peter is reasoning with his fellow believers to consider the fact that GOD’S timing is different from our timing. In essence, we as humans were not made for time but for eternity. GOD so loved the world that HE gave HIS only SON. GOD is eternal and time to HIM is not an issue but the salvation of every human who will ever live is HIS priority. Aren’t we glad GOD has waited for us to get to know HIM as our SAVIOR and given us the opportunity to become more like HIM through the process of sanctification? GOD’S desire is for every human ever to be conceived to be saved from the penalty of sin and eternal death by accepting CHRIST as their SAVIOR.

Peter used the word “repentance.” Repentance, as used in the original Greek, describes a change in mind as the result of a changed life. It means to turn away from sin and to turn to GOD by seeking HIS forgiveness for your sin through CHRIST. The idea behind repentance is not lip service or just uttering words of sorrow but putting our regret for our sin into action by seeking a genuine relationship with HIM through CHRIST.

Let’s read 1 Thessalonians 4:1-5:

The Call to Sanctification
1 Finally then, brothers, we ask and encourage you in the Lord Jesus, that as you have received from us how you must • walk and please God—as you are doing[1] Lit walking —do so even more. 2 For you know what commands we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 3 For this is God’s will, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality, 4 so that each of you knows how to possess his own vessel[2] Or to control his own body, or to acquire his own wife in sanctification and honor, 5 not with lustful desires, like the Gentiles who don’t know God.

The Apostle Paul writes to the Christians in the church at Thessalonica. He is urging Christians not to compromise their witness and journey with CHRIST. Paul and his group have given them the truth regarding CHRIST and living for HIM. They must not lose sight of the fact that their daily walk with CHRIST is vital. It is easy for the flesh to lure them into compromise and commitment to the LORD. GOD gives each believer freedom of choice. A choice requires a decision and the world offers many opportunities for a believer to decide whether or not to follow CHRIST or the world. Paul urged the Christians to follow CHRIST.
In verse 1, Paul refers to the Christians in Thessalonica as “brothers.” This was a term of endearment. Then he used the word “ask”, which is a gentle request. He then quickly follows “ask” with “encourage”, which carries a more authoritative or urgent tone. Paul reminds his fellow believers that as they “walk” or “live” their daily lives, to serve the LORD as HE leads them. Paul acknowledges that they are being obedient but they do not need to grow weary but keep their minds focused upon keeping on keeping on.
All believers must keep their minds focused upon HIM because once they become believers, GOD still gives them the right to choose. Our walk with the LORD is a daily choice. Now, that is not to say we slip into and out of heaven on a daily basis. Once you are GOD’S child through the miracle of the rebirth, you forever belong to GOD. However, our obedience is a decision and we can allow the flesh to take over the rule of our lives. That is why our relationship with HIM is so vital. It is like any other relationship, when something begins to come between you and your very best friend, you know it and it bothers you. If that relationship is important, you do something about it.
Christians must keep in mind that we are GOD’S representatives to the world and must stand in contrast to what the world embraces. In Paul’s day, one lure was to visit the pagan temple prostitutes. Sex has been and will always be a strong lure that most, if not all, all Christians will have to deal with. Pornography is freely available via the Internet. There are other things as well – addictions in many and varied things compromise our witness and growth in CHRIST.
Paul used the word “sanctification.” Sanctification can be translated “holiness” or “being set aside for the use and service of GOD.” Sanctification is our spiritual journey as we obediently serve our SAVIOR and LORD, JESUS CHRIST.
There are three (3) stages to salvation:
Justification – Justification happens the instant we acknowledge CHRIST as our SAVIOR. You can use the word “justification” to help understand what it means – just-as-if-I-never-sinned. How can I say that? I don’t, GOD does in 2 Corinthians 5:21:
21 He made the One (CHRIST) who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we (believers) might become the righteousness of God in Him (CHRIST).
Notice the words, “that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” The becoming is the process of sanctification. That occurs here upon earth. When we die and we see CHRIST our sanctification will be completed. That is when believers will be glorified.
Glorification is the final stage in our process of salvation. When we see CHRIST we will be like HIM. The goal of the FATHER is for all of HIS children to be made into the image of HIS SON, JESUS. Now that is exciting.
In verse 5, Paul referred to “vessel.” Bible scholars have two (2) schools of thought regarding the word “vessel”. Some believe vessel refers to a believer’s wife. Others believe vessel refers to a believer’s body.
I believe “vessel” is referring to a believer’s body but it is not absolutely clear. The important thing is that a believer needs to focus upon the fact that he/she is set aside to obediently serve GOD through the process of sanctification, which means being made saint like. Therefore, do not contaminate your mind and body with things that compromise your holiness, such as sexual sins or any other thing that can lure you away from serving GOD.
Again, it is all about making the right choices. The flesh leads us one way and the HOLY SPIRIT leads us another. Believers decide and choose who they will follow. GOD’S desire is for believers to choose to follow HIM. That is the will of the FATHER.
Let’s read 1 Thessalonians 5:15-22:
15 See to it that no one repays evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good for one another and for all. 16 Rejoice always! 17 Pray constantly. 18 Give thanks in everything, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Don’t stifle the Spirit. 20 Don’t despise prophecies, 21 but test all things. Hold on to what is good. 22 Stay away from every form of evil.
Paul was urging the Christians in Thessalonica to remember who they were. They represented GOD and the living body of believers. An individual believer’s attitude toward others can have either a positive or negative influence on others, therefore, watch your attitude and pursue good toward fellow believers, as well as others. Then Paul tells them how to pursue good by rejoicing in all situations. When people try to provoke you, do not think retaliation, but respond with rejoicing. This dumfounds those trying to discourage believers. If a believer results to retaliation, it robs them of the joy of serving GOD and harms them, as well as, all who call themselves Christians.
But how can a believer rejoice when people are harassing him/her? Paul tells us. A believer must pray and stay focused on the LORD, HIS strength, his/her salvation and the assurance that his/her home is not on earth but heaven. This leads a believer to recognize and acknowledge his/her eternal security by trusting GOD in whatever circumstance or situation he/she is encountering. It is a matter of trust.
Then Paul cautions believers not to “stifle” or hold back on using their Spiritual gift or gifts GOD has given them. In a hostile environment, it is easy to conclude “Why should I help these ungrateful people with a gift from the LORD.”
Paul continues his caution by urging believers not to reject prophesy by becoming callous to a true message from GOD. It is easy during difficult times to close our minds and hearts to a message from GOD through the HOLY SPIRIT. It is easy to blame GOD when we do not get relief from a situation so we shut down and shut out. But Paul was saying, when times get tough, that is when believers must get even closer to the LORD. It is important that believers test to make sure what they are hearing is from the LORD.
Paul is very clear that believers are to test all things to verify that they are from GOD. Those things that pass the test hold on to them. The things that are evil stay away from. Don’t compromise your stand with the LORD but be consistent. To me, this means staying in relationship because it is only in relationship with GOD that believers can be all that GOD desires for them during difficult times.
It is important that believers know the difference between situations or circumstances brought about by their decisions made by following the flesh versus those brought about while obediently serving the LORD. In either situation, I believe GOD is in all things working to bring about the best result. When believers’ sin, they confess their sin and GOD forgives them. However, they have to suffer the consequences resulting from that sin.
GOD wants believers to test all things and make sure they are from GOD. How do we test? One way to test is by questioning, “Are we being led to accept or do something contrary to GOD’S Word, the Bible?” Discernment is a Spiritual gift and sometimes our Spirit warns us that something is wrong. Pay attention. GOD equips believers to know the truth.
Paul gives good advice; do not put yourself in a situation that can lead you to compromise your witness. Those with addictions must stay away from the things that are a temptation and can lure them back into their old ways.
The big picture of GOD’S will as outlined by the scripture we have studied is:
GOD’S desire is for all people to receive salvation through CHRIST.
Once a person becomes a believer through CHRIST, GOD’S desire is for him/her to be holy through the process of sanctification.
Believers are GOD’S representatives to the world; therefore, HIS desire is for them to pursue good.

The Trinity - Matthew 3:13-17, 1 Cor. 2:12-13, Eph. 1:3-14 - July 26, 2009

Sunday School Lesson – The Trinity – July 26, 2009

This is our final lesson in our study entitled “Experiencing God Triune-ly.”

Our scripture is Matthew 3:13-17; 1 Corinthians 2:12-13; Ephesians 1:3-14.

The word “Trinity” will not be found in the Bible. The ONE TRUE GOD in three (3) persons is the heart of Christian belief, which is supported by scripture. Our first scripture should help us better understand that the FATHER, SON and HOLY SPIRIT are distinct persons but all are ONE. As we began our study, I stated that to me the simple answer regarding the Trinity is if you ask the same question to any one of the THREE, you will get the same response. The Three (3) are in perfect harmony and unity with each other. Just as all believers should be in harmony and unity with each other.

The Trinity can be confusing but keep in mind that understanding the Trinity is not required to be a Christian. CHRIST in you makes you a Christian. It is a matter of faith, not understanding the Trinity. When we all get to heaven then we will know all truth. Let’s see if we can dig out a few nuggets or gems to help us better understand the TRINITY.

Let’s read Matthew 3:11, 13-17:

11 “I (John the Baptizer) baptize you with[4] water for repentance,[5] but the One (CHRIST) who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to take off[6] His sandals. He Himself will baptize you with[7] the Holy Spirit and fire.

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to stop Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and yet You come to me?” 15 Jesus answered him, “Allow it for now, because this is the way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him [to be baptized]* .
16 After Jesus was baptized, He went up immediately from the water. The heavens suddenly opened for Him,[9] and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on Him. 17 And there came a voice from heaven: This is My beloved Son. I take delight in Him!

JESUS is beginning HIS earthly ministry. HIS cousin, John the Baptizer or Baptist, was the forerunner of CHRIST heralding the coming of the Messiah/CHRIST. In the wilderness/desert, John was preaching about repentance, committing one’s life to obedience and service to GOD, the coming of the Messiah/CHRIST and the coming of the HOLY SPIRIT. He was baptizing those who had committed themselves to a changed life with the hope of the coming Messiah. JESUS asked John to baptize HIM, which at first John refused because he did not think HE needed to be baptized.

The Apostle Matthew gives us insight into the Trinity. GOD, THE FATHER, GOD, THE SON and GOD, THE HOLY SPIRIT are all eternal and were present at the inauguration of JESUS’ public ministry. We see the role of each person in the Trinity. JESUS, GOD’S SON was physically present in human form ready to obediently serve GOD. As JESUS came out of the water, the heavens opened and THE HOLY SPIRIT came down upon JESUS and GOD, THE FATHER spoke from heaven acknowledging that JESUS was HIS SON.

In my opinion, up until the coming of JESUS, I view GOD more in the judgment mode. But GOD had the plan of redemption because HE loved the world and the people in the world. John 3:16 captures this so beautifully.

John 3:16-18: (JESUS is speaking and gives us insight into the heart of GOD, THE FATHER.)

16 “For God loved the world in this way: He gave His • One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.[10] 17 For God did not send His Son into the world that He might condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 Anyone who believes in Him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the • One and Only Son of God.

GOD’S grace was extended to mankind through the obedience of CHRIST in HIS death, which was confirmed by HIS resurrection.

THE HOLY SPIRIT came upon CHRIST to equip him for ministry. THE HOLY SPIRIT comes upon all believers to equip them for ministry and gift them according to GOD’S plan and purpose for them to obediently serve HIM. Keep in mind, GOD’S objective is for all believers to be made into the image of HIS SON.

The manner in which Matthew relates this event to us helps us to relate to the three (3) distinct Persons of the Trinity.

Let’s read 1 Corinthians 2:12-13:

12 Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, in order to know what has been freely given to us by God. 13 We also speak these things, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual things to spiritual people.[7]

The Apostle Paul gives us further insight why GOD gave believers the HOLY SPIRIT. The HOLY SPIRIT reveals the things of GOD in contrast to the things the physical has to offer. As GOD’S children, believers have such a great heritage that can only be revealed by GOD through the HOLY SPIRIT. GOD’S desire is for believers to represent HIM to a lost world. This is GOD’S plan to spread the Gospel to others. Lives changed by GOD are powerful testimonies to those who seek truth. Spiritual matters are discerned by the Spirit and to non-believers Spiritual things cannot be understood. Spiritual matters are foolishness to those who do not believe. Thus, the HOLY SPIRIT enlightens, teaches, corrects, convicts, comforts, confirms, assures, empowers, gifts, prompts, urges and the list goes on for all believers. It is overwhelming to see all that is available to all believers and know how little we have grown and matured for GOD to use us more.

Let’s read Ephesians 1:3-14:

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavens,[2] in Christ; 4 for He chose[3] us in Him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in His sight.[4] In love[5] 5 He predestined[6] us to be adopted through Jesus Christ for Himself, according to His favor and will, 6 to the praise of His glorious grace that He favored us with in the Beloved. 7 In Him[7] we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 8 that He lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. 9 He made known to us the • mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure that He planned in Him 10 for the administration[8] of the days of fulfillment[9]—to bring everything together in the • Messiah, both things in heaven and things on earth in Him. 11 In Him we were also made His inheritance,[10] predestined[11] according to the purpose of the One who works out everything in agreement with the decision of His will, 12 so that we who had already put our hope in the Messiah might bring praise to His glory. 13 In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation—in Him when you believed—were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. 14 He is the down payment[12] of our inheritance, for the redemption of the possession,[13] to the praise of His glory.

The Apostle Paul writes this letter to the Christians in Ephesus. He addressed the role of GOD, CHRIST and the HOLY SPIRIT in our salvation. He began by acknowledging GOD has blessed all believers with HIS love and grace by giving the world a plan of salvation through HIS SON, which is sustained and confirmed by the HOLY SPIRIT.

Just think about GOD knowing each person before HE created the world and HE allowed us to be born anyway. I think of this verse when I consider, “Where was I before I was born?” My answer is, “Safely in the heart and mind of GOD.” WOW!!!

GOD’S desire is for all humans to know HIM by accepting CHRIST as their SAVIOR. Ultimately, HE wants them to be made into the image of HIS SON by allowing CHRIST to be the LORD of their lives. This is an awesome journey and one I am still on. It is not easy, but exciting, when we see the hand of our LORD at work through our lives.

Verse 4, is an interesting verse. Bible scholars have different interpretations of this verse. Some interpret verse 4 in support of predestination. In my opinion, if predestination is true, then, the individual person does not have the freedom to choose. That would give those rejecting CHRIST a solid argument against GOD sentencing them to Hell on Judgment Day.

Here are my thoughts on verse 4, which have no Biblical support, so keep that in mind. I believe that the foreknowledge of GOD does not predestine a person to make a certain decision. Because GOD knows how a person will choose does not predestine him/her to make a certain choice. GOD’S desire is for every human ever conceived to become a believer but HE gives each person the freedom to choose. Many will not choose HIM. HE happens to know who will choose HIM and HE makes sure they will survive until their appointed time to be born arrives because HE has a plan and purpose for them. (We could say well, why does GOD allow those who do bad things to good people to survive? That would be using HIS foreknowledge to change the course of events and take away the freedom of choice. Sin in the world has resulted in disease, decay, death, un-Godliness, hate, murder, rape, abuse, addictions and the list goes on. We have to keep in mind Satan roams earth seeking who he can devour.)

Every person has to marvel when he/she looks back at his/her ancestry and consider that the premature death of an ancestor could mean he/she would not exist. Our existence is a miracle and the fact that we live in a human body is a miracle. To me the human body is hard to comprehend and I live in one. But we exist and it is because of the love, grace and protection of GOD. Acknowledge HIM in your life today because your being alive on earth was not a mistake because GOD has a plan for you.

GOD knew it was hard for humans to comprehend HIM and for HIM to know what humans experience. So HE allowed HIS ONLY SON to come to earth to live as a human, be subject to death and to be tempted in all ways as humans are tempted. In this way, HE could understand our humanness and humans could relate to HIM through CHRIST. This would accomplish many different purposes. The most important purpose is the redemption of all who would believe in CHRIST as his/her SAVIOR.

Some people may think that since GOD is GOD, HE did not need to experience humanness. You could be correct. We will all learn the truth when we get to heaven. This ends my opinion on verse 4.

As we study this scripture, we see that GOD wants HIS children to know HIM and to have absolute assurance of their salvation. In verses 13 and 14, at the moment of our salvation, HE seals us with the promise of the HOLY SPIRIT, as a guarantee, security deposit, down payment that we have been redeemed from the consequences of sin. We belong to HIM through the miracle of rebirth in our spirit and that we have the gift of eternal life. Romans 8:16 captures this assurance:

16 The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children,

Do you know that you belong to GOD through CHRIST? If not, ask CHRIST to forgive you of your sins right now and ask HIM to come into your life. HE will and in that instant you will be born into the family of GOD with all the rights, privileges and benefits as an heir.

Christians belong to GOD as HIS children. In verse 5, Paul used the word “adopted.” JESUS told the Jewish Rabbi, Nicodemus, in John 3:3 - 3 Jesus replied, “• I assure you: Unless someone is born again,[1]he cannot see the kingdom of God.” I believe that either term “adopted” or “born-again” means the same. Believers become permanent members of GOD’S family the instant they accept CHRIST as their SAVIOR.

Some could think that since GOD, THE FATHER, GOD, THE SON and GOD, THE HOLY SPIRIT are all ONE, then, CHRIST is not the only way to the FATHER. WRONG!!! SALVATION through CHRIST is GOD’S plan. The way to GOD is through CHRIST. CHRIST freely gave HIS life to redeem mankind from sin and death. If there was another way, then CHRIST died in vain.

Blessings to all and my prayer is that our LORD will enlighten the eyes of our hearts to HIS truth regarding our understanding of the Trinity.

Living in the Spirit - Genesis, Acts and 1 Corinthians - July 19, 2009

Sunday School Lesson – Living in the Spirit – July 19, 2009

This is lesson three (3) in our series entitled “Experiencing God Triune-ly.”

Our scripture is Genesis 1:2, Acts 5:3-4; Acts 4:29-31; 1 Corinthians 12:4-7.

We study the third person in the Trinity, THE HOLY SPIRIT this week. GOD, THE FATHER, GOD, THE SON and GOD, THE HOLY SPIRIT has always existed and will always exist. GOD and THE HOLY SPIRIT were prominent in the Old Testament and revealed the coming of the CHRIST the Messiah. GOD manifested Himself in the person of JESUS, born of the Virgin Mary. In essence, we can think of JESUS as the first Spirit or GOD filled Christian.

In last week’s study the Apostle Philip asked JESUS to show them the Father. JESUS’ response was reported in John 14:9-10:

9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been among you all this time without your knowing Me, Philip? The one who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me?[5] Jn 10:30,38 The words I speak to you I do not speak on My own. The Father who lives in Me does His works.

JESUS had GOD, THE FATHER living within HIM. As believers, we have THE HOLY SPIRIT living within us. JESUS had to return to heaven before the HOLY SPIRIT could return to earth to indwell believers. John 14:26:

26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit—the Father will send Him in My name—will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.

Acts 1:4: (JESUS was instructing HIS disciples before HE ascended into Heaven.)

4 While He was together with them,[1] Or He was eating with them, or He was lodging with them He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father’s promise. “This,” [He said, “is what]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. you heard from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

JESUS, through HIS death as a human, not only paid the price for sin but also sanctified the human body for believers to receive the HOLY SPIRIT the instant they accept CHRIST as their SAVIOR. When we study the life of JESUS, HE showed us the confidence and trust all believers can have in the security of GOD’S presence in our lives.

I am reminded of the instant when there was a fierce storm and the disciples were afraid, yet JESUS was fast asleep in the boat that was about to be swamped – Luke 8:22-25:

22 One day He and His disciples got into a boat, and He told them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, 23 and as they were sailing He fell asleep. Then a fierce windstorm came down on the lake; they were being swamped and were in danger. 24 They came and woke Him up, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to die!” Then He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves. So they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?”

How could JESUS be asleep during this fierce moment? HE trusted GOD in all aspects of HIS life. GOD was HIS protector and GOD was guiding HIS life. HIS faith was in GOD, not in the circumstances surrounding HIM. Easy to say when you are not in a bad situation. I had to be reminded of HIS care just within the past few days. It boils down to trust and confidence. The indwelling HOLY SPIRIT is our assurance that we are the children of GOD and GOD cares for us, just as HE cared for HIS SON, JESUS.

JESUS was GOD’S opportunity to experience humanity and view life as a human from the perspective of a human. In order for that to happen, JESUS had to be 100% human and 100% Divine. HE had to be capable of sinning and subject to the death of HIS earthly body. HE was tempted in all ways like we are, yet without sin.

Let’s read Genesis 1:2:

2 Now the earth was[1] Or When God began to create the sky and the earth, 2 the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

The HOLY SPIRIT was involved with the creation of the world. The word “hovering” is an exciting word to ponder. Think of it as you being the chief engineer responsible for the successful launch of a NASA space project. It is a complex and intricate project where many different systems must work perfectly. You need to make certain that everything is perfect. You have one shot to get it right. “Hovering” is you checking every aspect of the various systems to ensure they are perfect and will do what they are intended to do before you press the button. The HOLY SPIRIT is checking everything to ensure it is perfect.

In the same way the HOLY SPIRIT checks our lives to see if there is anything that is a problem or concern.

Let’s read Acts 5:3-4:

3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the proceeds from the field? 4 Wasn’t it yours while you possessed it? And after it was sold, wasn’t it at your disposal? Why is it that you planned this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God!”

Ananias and his wife Sapphira sold a piece of property. However, they held back some of the money obtained from the sale of the property. They gave the impression that they had given all the money they received from the sale of the property to the apostles to be used to meet the needs of others. They lied to the HOLY SPIRIT/GOD, which resulted in their death. We must not blaspheme the HOLY SPIRIT. Doing so has dire consequences. Resisting the urging of the HOLY SPIRIT is also dangerous. The HOLY SPIRIT works in the hearts of believers and non-believers to convict them of their sin. The HOLY SPIRIT works in the hearts of believers teaching, revealing, prompting, assuring, and leading them to build an intimate relationship with GOD through CHRIST and obediently serve HIM.

Let’s read John 7:37-39:

37 On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, he should come to Me[6] Other mss omit to Me and drink! 38 The one who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said,[7] Jesus may have had several OT passages in mind; Isaiah 58:11; Ezk 47:1–12; Zch 14:8 will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.” 39 He said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were going to receive, for the Spirit[8] Other mss read Holy Spirit had not yet been received,[9] Other mss read had not yet been given [10] Lit the Spirit was not yet; the word received is implied from the previous clause. because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

JESUS was attending the Feast of Tabernacles when HE stood up and made these remarks. The Feast was to celebrate the harvest and was also known as the Festival of Ingathering. It also commemorated the time the Israelites spent wandering in the wilderness waiting for GOD to allow them to enter the Promised Land. During the festival, the priest would fill a pitcher with water from the pool of Siloam and take it to the altar at the temple and pour it out.

The festival lasted eight (8) days. The pouring of the water was a reminder that GOD had provided water for the Israelites during the time they wandered in the wilderness. However, the pouring of the water did not occur on the eighth day but the priest prayed for rain for the next year. It was on the last day of the festival when JESUS stood and said these words, which could have been either the 7th or 8th day. The emphasis was on the necessity of water to sustain humans and their food source for their physical survival and JESUS is necessary for their Spiritual survival.

Water is the only substance that really quenches thirst. As I wrote this, I had been out doing various projects in the heat of the day, which included a hot dog and ice cream supper for some young people. Of course, there was an ample supply of soft drinks. When I got home, the number one thing I craved the most was a glass of ice water. In fact, I had at least two (2) big glasses of ice water.

JESUS told the Samaritan woman at the well that HE could give her living water, which appealed to her so she wouldn’t have to haul water from the well. JESUS was speaking of Spiritual water that only HE can provide, which quenches thirsty souls seeking the fullness of GOD in their lives.

The HOLY SPIRIT refreshes our souls, enlightens, teaches, reveals un-confessed sin, assures believers of their salvation and the list goes on. The HOLY SPIRIT is the source of life giving spiritual water.

Unbelievers thirst for the things the world has to offer. Believers thirst for spiritual water. The unbeliever seeks truth and completion but in all the wrong places. GOD knows their hearts and will lead those seeking truth to find it in CHRIST. Once we find the truth and accept CHRIST as our SAVIOR, believers thirst for the fullness of CHRIST in their lives. This is accomplished through relationship and obediently serving HIM by yielding his/her life to HIM and ministering to others through the power and gifts of the HOLY SPIRIT. It is an exciting journey.

I read this statement in the commentary published by LifeWay, Summer 2009 – “Some Christians are more open to the power and leadership of the Holy Spirit, but all Christians receive the Holy Spirit at the moment of conversion.”

This has been the experience of my life. It is all about believers yielding themselves to the guidance and control of the HOLY SPIRIT. It is very difficult for believers to shift the control of their lives from flesh control to Spirit control. Even when we make the shift, we battle taking control of our lives back over. The beauty is that GOD understands and works with us along our journey with HIM because HE knows what it is like being a human.

We see in verse 39 that the believer, at that time, had to wait to receive the HOLY SPIRIT. After the resurrection and ascension of JESUS, the FATHER sent the HOLY SPIRIT back to earth on the Day of Pentecost to indwell believers the instant they ask CHRIST to forgive them of their sins and to come into their lives. This is the miracle of rebirth in the Spirit and will continue until the end of time as we know it. JESUS had to pay, in full, the price required by GOD to satisfy the sin debt before the HOLY SPIRIT could indwell the human body. This was accomplished when CHRIST gave HIS life on the cross for all who would believe in HIM as their personal SAVIOR and HIS resurrection is proof that HE paid the price and conquered sin and death.

Let’s read Acts 4:29-31:

29 And now, Lord, consider their threats, and grant that Your slaves may speak Your message with complete boldness, 30 while You stretch out Your hand for healing, signs, and wonders to be performed through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.” 31 When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak God’s message with boldness.

The LORD had healed a man that had been crippled from birth through the Apostles Peter and John. As a result of this healing about 5,000 men became Christians. This upset the religious leaders and they had Pater and John arrested. Later they were released and reported what happened to fellow believers. There was a renewed commitment and determination to serve the LORD JESUS as evidenced by asking GOD to give them boldness and to continue showing HIS power through healing, signs and wonders. They were not shrinking away but rededicating themselves to serve in the face of threats. Their confidence and trust was in GOD and their desire was to continue to obediently serve HIM. As a result of this renewed dedication and recommitment, there was a shaking and filling of those assembled with the HOLY SPIRIT. The believers were empowered to speak GOD’S message of salvation with boldness.

Some believers might interpret this as a second blessing by the HOLY SPIRIT. Those gathered were already Christians but Luke speaks of all being filled with the HOLY SPIRIT. Such an experience is like a second encounter with CHRIST following salvation. It was a renewal and recommitment to serve the LORD with all of their being. Believers held nothing back in the face of threats from the religious leaders. It is an overwhelming moment. It is a moment that will never be forgotten.

Believers must keep in mind that they receive all of the HOLY SPIRIT the moment they ask CHRIST to forgive them of their sin and ask HIM to come into their lives. However, there are overwhelming moments as we grow and mature in the LORD. As we give more of ourselves to HIM and commit to obediently serve HIM.

It happened to me many years ago when I was battling to allow the LORD to take my life fully and completely. I had the notion that I had to be strong enough to live the Christian life. The Christian life was to be lived in my own strength. I tried living what I believed to be the Christian life for a period of time only to discover that it was both frustrating and impossible. I became very frustrated and on my way to work one morning, while driving onto I-26, I asked the LORD to take my life as it was the good and the bad, and help me to live the Christian life. I can tell you in the twinkling of an eye HE took my life as it was. That moment was a life changing moment because for the first time in my life, I knew without a doubt that I belonged to GOD, through CHRIST. I have to quickly add that I have not always pleased HIM but I have always had the assurance that I was HIS child. This moment was me releasing my control to HIS control. It was a commitment of my life to HIM.

I have experienced another moment similar just a few years ago, but not as dramatic, when I studied “Experiencing God” written by Dr. Henry Balckaby and Claude King.

In retrospect, I think I became a Christian when I was about nine (9) or ten (10) years old. I had the notion that works sustained my salvation. I believed I could be in heaven one moment and out the next. I did not understand the miracle of the rebirth and that GOD had me in HIS hand and was my assurance of eternity. From that moment on the road to work experience, I have never doubted my salvation or security in HIM. My prayer is for all believers, as well as, all people to know this truth. Commit your life to HIM right now. If you want to wait to see if you can hold out being a Christian, I can tell you, you cannot. Place your life into CHRIST’S hands.

Let’s read 1 Corinthians 12:4-7:

4 Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are different activities, but the same God is active in everyone and everything.[2] Lit God acts all things in all 7 A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person to produce what is beneficial:

The Apostle Paul addressed some of the gifts manifested through believers by the
HOLY SPIRIT. The HOLY SPIRIT knows the plans and purpose of GOD, THE FATHER. HE gifts believers to carry out HIS plans and purpose. Even though there are many different gifts, they are all from one source, GOD, as distributed by the HOLY SPIRIT. A spiritual gift is for ministering to others in a variety of ways.

The HOLY SPIRIT is a person. We see this in Romans 8:16:

16 The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children,

Believers have to be careful not to become envious of those having a certain gift.
Some church denominations believe that every born-again believer must display the receiving of the HOLY SPIRIT by manifesting the gift of speaking in tongues. Tongues are a gift for a purpose. They are important to any church. There are many more gifts, which GOD wants HIS children to have and use for HIS purpose and to benefit others according to HIS plans and purpose.

Let’s look at 1 Corinthians 12:11: (This statement follows a list of various gifts.)

11 But one and the same Spirit is active in all these, distributing to each one as He wills.

The HOLY SPIRIT distributes gifts as HE wills. Believers can desire certain gifts but it is GOD’S decision who receives a gift or gifts.

Every believer has at least one (1) Spiritual gift. I can hear some saying know, “Not me.” Well, you do.

The Apostle Paul makes it clear:

- There are different gifts but the same Spirit or GOD as the source.

- There are different ministries but the same Lord or GOD as the source.

- There are different activities but the same GOD as the source.

- Paul represents the Trinity in these verses. There is GOD. The LORD represents CHRIST and the Spirit represents the HOLY SPIRIT. They are mentioned separately but yet all are the same. Their purpose is to gift believers to benefit others. The gifts of GOD are many and varied for the purpose of serving HIM and ministering to others.

- The Greek root word for “gift” is “grace”. Spiritual gifts could be thought of as “grace-gifts”.

- Spiritual gifts are GOD’S grace being manifested though believers to serve HIM.

Seek the fullness of CHRIST in your life and HE will use you to serve HIM and minister to others. It is all about relationship. Seek to have the most intimate, loving relationship with HIM. Ask HIM in prayer to help you build this relationship by revealing to you any barrier that prevents it. I can tell you it is an awesome journey. Not easy but awesome. Blessings to all who desire to really know and serve HIM.

Exalting the Son - Colossians 1:15-23 - July 12, 2009

Sunday School Lesson – Exalting the Son – July 12, 2009

This is lesson two (2) in our series entitled “Experiencing God Triune-ly.”

Our scripture is Colossians 1:15-23.

We have been studying the Trinity of GOD – GOD, THE FATHER, GOD, THE SON and GOD, THE HOLY SPIRIT. Our focus will be on GOD, THE SON, JESUS CHRIST in this lesson.

The Apostle Paul wrote Colossians to the church at Colosse. He wrote it about 60 AD while he was in prison in Rome. The church at Colosse was encountering new philosophies. It is the dawn of Gnosticism which we studied in 1 John. John wrote 1 John about 85-90 AD, which addressed Gnosticism.

Let’s read Colossians 1: 15-17:

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation;[8] The One who is preeminent over all creation 16 because by Him everything was created, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and by Him all things hold together.

These are very strong verses of scripture regarding the divine nature of CHRIST. HE is not only equal to GOD, HE is GOD. HE is the exact representation of GOD. When we see JESUS we also see GOD. The Apostle Philip asked JESUS a question in John 14:8 - 8 “Lord,” said Philip, “show us the Father, and that’s enough for us.”

JESUS’ response to Philip’s question is given in John14:9-11:

9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been among you all this time without your knowing Me, Philip? The one who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me?[5] Jn 10:30,38 The words I speak to you I do not speak on My own. The Father who lives in Me does His works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me. Otherwise, believe[6] Other mss read believe Me because of the works themselves.

Since GOD is Spirit, JESUS is the manifestation of GOD. In last week’s study, we were made aware of some of GOD’S nature and character. We can study the life of CHRIST and understand GOD’S application of HIS nature and character though CHRIST. I am reminded of CHRIST’S compassion for the Spiritually sick as well as the physically sick. HE got angry over people making the temple a den of thieves. HE cursed the fig tree when it was not bearing fruit. It wasn’t the poor fig tree but an example to believers who are all show and no fruit. HE was forgiving, kind and mingled with those who needed HIM. HE had a sense of humor. The incident when JESUS was
walking on water is an example of HIS humor. Matthew 14:27 (King James version comes close to capturing the moment) - 24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. 27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid, comes close to capturing the moment.

The original Greek suggests that as the disciples were experiencing a rough sea, JESUS was walking on the water approaching them but acting as if HE was walking past them. I can picture the scene as the disciples are very concerned with the conditions of the sea and here comes JESUS walking on the sea, acting as if HE was walking past them. Now for my twist on the scene – the disciples are struggling in the boat, likely afraid and they see JESUS walking on the sea approaching them. HE waves at them as to ask, guys, what is the problem? I think I will walk to the other side because I am making better time walking than you are using the boat. Of course, JESUS used this moment as a teaching time for the disciples, particularly Peter and all believers. We must keep our eyes upon JESUS during times when our lives are being tossed about.

The next part of verse 15 “the firstborn of all creation” can be troubling. At first glance it appears that CHRIST was a created being but this is not correct. It means CHRIST is first in rank. HE is supreme and is preeminent over all creation. CHRIST is the Creator of the universe, which is supported by the remaining verses.

CHRIST holds all things together. I stand in awe of the order of the universe and how well it runs. Now we know why it runs so well, JESUS holds all things together. WOW!!! What a SAVIOR!!!

Let’s read Colossians 1: 18-20:

18 He is also the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He might come to have first place in everything. 19 For God was pleased [to have]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. all His fullness[9] Eph 3:19 dwell in Him, 20 and through Him to reconcile everything to Himself by making peace through the blood of His cross[10] Other mss add through Him — whether things on earth or things in heaven.

Just as CHRIST is over the universe, HE is also over the human institution - the church. The true church is not the brick and mortar but each born-again believer. CHRIST is head of the living church made up of the living stones which are true believers. Being a Christian is not joining a particular church but CHRIST in you makes you a Christian.

Since CHRIST is first in all things, HE is the first human to be eternally resurrected from the dead. HIS passion and resurrection established the foundation and principle for all born-again believers to have eternal life and also receive their resurrected glorified body at the second coming of CHRIST.

Notice the order. CHRIST was 100% Divine and became 100% human to live and be tempted in all ways like a human. HE remained sinless thus becoming the perfect sacrifice for the sins of mankind. HE gave HIS life on the cross to pay the sin debt. Proof that HE paid the sin debt is HIS resurrection from the dead, thus conquering the penalty of sin, which is death. HIS passion and resurrection as a human prepared the human body of all born-again believers to be filled with and occupied by the HOLY SPIRIT.

When a person accepts CHRIST as his/her SAVIOR that rebirth makes him/her Divine. GOD in HIS wisdom allows born-again believers to remain on earth as HIS witnesses and obediently serve HIM until they go home to be with HIM in heaven. When CHRIST returns, all believers will return with HIM to receive their Glorified Bodies just like CHRIST’S Glorified Body.

CHRIST’S passion reconciled all things on earth and in heaven to Himself through HIS obedience and shedding of HIS blood. HE conquered all and is over all. HE holds all things together.

Let’s read Colossians 1:21-23:

21 And you were once alienated and hostile in mind because of your evil actions. 22 But now He has reconciled you by His physical body[11] His body of flesh on the cross through His death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before Him— 23 if indeed you remain grounded and steadfast in the faith, and are not shifted away from the hope of the gospel that you heard. [This gospel]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and I, Paul, have become a minister of it.

Paul addressed the sinful nature of all humans. Humans sin in thought (mind) as well as deed (actions). Sin separates all humans from GOD. However, because of the passion of CHRIST in HIS human body, which was subject to death, conquered sin and death for all believers to approach GOD directly as HIS children. Born-again believers are, at the instant they accept CHRIST as their SAVIOR, born into GOD’S family through the miracle of re-birth.

Verse 23, could give us some concern until we understand the word “if”. “If” in English carries the idea of being conditional or hypothetical. In the Greek languages “if” often expressed confidence, which means that “if” can be translated “since.” Verse 23 is a positive statement of faith – “Since indeed you ------.” In essence you have been born into GOD’S family and you belong to HIM. HE is hanging onto you. HE has you in HIS hands.

The Apostle John in John 10:27-30 reported the words of JESUS regarding a believer’s security:

27 My sheep hear My voice, I know them, and they follow Me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish—ever! No one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 The Father and I are one.”[9] Lit I and the Father—We are one.

CHRIST’S passion has reconciled all things to Himself universally.

What a heritage believers have, which is reflected in our baptism. We are buried with CHRIST and raised to walk in newness of life. In essence when CHRIST died on the cross, all believers died with HIM; Those looking forward to HIS coming and those of us who are looking back at HIS passion. All believers were buried and raised from the dead when CHRIST was buried and resurrected. Our citizenship is in heaven, yet we walk upon earth just as JESUS did. Why? It is to witness to others of the love of GOD and to share HIS message of salvation to a lost world as led by the HOLY SPIRIT. Remember CHRIST in John 14:10. CHRIST said that the Father was in HIM. Believers have the HOLY SPIRIT indwelling them. Believers represent GOD to others. Now that thought makes us pause and ponder. That is why believers must be in intimate relationship with GOD through CHRIST.

It is in the process of serving that we build an intimate relationship with GOD through CHRIST and grow and mature Spiritually. This is the process of sanctification.
CHRIST in us, the hope of glory.

CHRIST presents all believers before the FATHER as holy, faultless and blameless. A believer’s perfection is because of CHRIST. Yes, believers are sinners saved by grace. When GOD looks at us, all of our imperfections are covered by the shed blood of JESUS and GOD sees us as Holy, faultless and blameless. That is awesome but makes me feel so unworthy.

This is only possible because of what CHRIST did for each believer. If you had been the only person in all eternity to receive CHRIST as your SAVIOR, HE would have given HIS life just for you. That is why JESUS is our personal SAVIOR. HE wants to be the LORD of our lives but that requires a decision on our part. When we make HIM the LORD of our lives, then we can begin to see HIS power working through us as we build our relationship with HIM.

Yield your life to HIM today and experience the majesty of HIS presence in your lives.
