Bible Study – Moses - On the Job Training (2) – March 22, 2026

In last week’s study, we learned that GOD revealed HIMSELF to Moses of all things through what appeared like a burning bush that was not consumed. GOD still reveals HIMSELF in many different ways to get us to pause and reflect but ultimately through HIS only SON, JESUS.

At the right time, GOD would send HIS only SON, JESUS, to earth to live a 100% human life. JESUS willingly came to earth, willing to be obedient to GOD, HIS FATHER, to fulfill the Law, and establish eternally GOD’S redemptive plan for all people, who place their faith in JESUS.

CHRIST in us, is the hope of Glory. Colossians 1:27:

God wanted to make known among the Gentiles the glorious wealth of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Let’s go back to Moses and his journey of discovering GOD and GOD revealing Himself to Moses.

It was a learning experience for Moses and so is our journey with GOD through faith in JESUS a learning experience. Why?

Since the Passion of JESUS, all who place their faith in JESUS have the Holy Spirit living within him or her.

We read in Romans 8:11:

And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then he who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through his Spirit who lives in you. Romans 8:11.

The indwelling Holy Spirit is the guarantee and assurance for all who place their faith in JESUS and HIS Passion, of eternal life.

As Moses walked with GOD, he discovered various attributes and characteristics of GOD. As “Spirit born” Christians, we have the indwelling Holy Spirit to be our assurance of salvation, teacher, revealer of truth, sustainer, guide, convicts us when we sin, and so much more as the “Born Again” person develops, grows, and matures Spiritually.

In last week’s study, we considered Genesis 3:13-15: The calling of Moses by GOD to be HIS representative to Pharoah.

13 Then Moses asked God, “If I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what should I tell them?”

Great question?

14 God replied to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.[e] This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the Israelites: The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever; this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.

I love the name of GOD, “I AM.” GOD has always existed. We humans like to think of a beginning and an end. GOD is eternal and so will all who place their faith in JESUS.

Notice: GOD said, “The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob” all in the present tense and not the past tense.

Notice in Mark 12 24 Jesus spoke to them, “Isn’t this the reason why you’re mistaken: you don’t know the Scriptures or the power of God? 25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like angels in heaven. 26 And as for the dead being raised—haven’t you read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God said to him: I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob?[i] 27 He is not the God of the dead but of the living. You are badly mistaken.”

[Mark 12:26:

And as for the dead being raised—haven’t you read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God said to him: I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob?]

Since the Passion of JESUS and Pentecost, all who ask GOD to forgive them for their sins and ask JESUS to come into their hearts, they are “Born Again” Spiritually by the union of The Holy Spirit (The Divine Sperm) and the human spirit (I consider as the egg). When Spiritual conception takes place, through faith in JESUS, that person is “born again” eternally, never to be unborn. He or she is eternally GOD’S Child and can approach GOD 24/7 and in essence, call HIM Daddy.

Satan wants to rob the person of faith of that intimacy with GOD while he or she continues life upon earth.

The indwelling Holy Spirit within a Spirit born person is the difference between the New Testament and the Old Testament.

Since the Passion of JESUS, HIS resurrection from the dead by GOD, and the coming of THE HOLY SPIRIT at Pentecost, all who place their faith in JESUS have 24/7 access to GOD through faith in JESUS. And those who seek salvation, through faith in JESUS, GOD is available 24/7.

Scripture reveals in 1 Corinthians 6:19:

Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit WHO is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own ------

20 for you were bought at a price. So glorify God with your body.[e]

When a person places his or her faith in JESUS his/her ownership changes because JESUS redeems him/her from eternity in Hell, to eternity in Heaven. Now, that is Good News for all who have placed their faith in JESUS.

Our salvation cost the life of JESUS, which HE freely gave to pay the sin debt in full, for all who place their faith in HIM. The good news is that JESUS willingly gave HIS sinless life that all who place their faith in HIM will have eternal life and eternally be in the Family of GOD.

But to carry the willingness of JESUS to give HIS sinless for salvation, if you were the only person in all the world or time to accept JESUS as your Savior, JESUS would have given HIS sinless life just for you to be born again, have eternal life and live eternally with GOD, THE FATHER, GOD, THE SON and GOD, THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Once, a person has been born again, Spiritually, that persons changes as revealed in Philippians 3:20

Our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly wait for a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.

As Moses was getting to know GOD, GOD was using him to minister to his father-in-law, Jethro.

Jethro is described in the Bible as “the priest of Midian,”1 indicating an idolatrous background. Some traditions say he worshiped every deity of his time in a quest for truth, eventually abandoning them all for belief in the One G‑d.2 Others interpret his title as a sign of political leadership in Midian.3

Stay tuned, keep in mind that Moses knew the ONE TRUE GOD. Will GOD open the Spiritual eyes of Jethro? Jethro seemed to worship many gods to make sure he did not omit one. Would Jethro’s relationship with Moses open his Spiritual eyes? As we journey, we discover.

Exodus 3:7-22:

Then the Lord said, “I have observed the misery of my people in Egypt and have heard them crying out because of their oppressors. I know about their sufferings, and I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and to bring them from that land to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the territory of the Canaanites, Hethites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. So because the Israelites’ cry for help has come to me, and I have also seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them, 10 therefore, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh so that you may lead my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.”

11 But Moses asked God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and that I should bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”

Moses response reveals his heart toward GOD. Moses needed the strength and presence of GOD to accomplish what GOD was calling him to do. Our insufficiency is GOD’S opportunity to reveal HIMSELF and HIS sufficiency, as we obediently follow HIM. However, we know that we can get too big for our own britches and take matters into our own hands. GOD uses these times to teach us, as well.

One may think, “well GOD was speaking directly to Moses.” Yes, and GOD speaks to us today through the Holy Spirit. Both to call us to repent of our sins and to ask JESUS to forgive us for all of our sins and for JESUS to come into our hearts. This is necessary for a person to be “born again” Spiritually and become the eternal Son or Daughter of GOD.

GOD responded to Moses’ need for GOD’S help to accomplish what GOD had called him to do.

12 He answered, “I will certainly be with you, and this will be the sign to you that I am the one who sent you: when you bring the people out of Egypt, you will all worship[d] God at this mountain.”

13 Then Moses asked God, “If I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what should I tell them?”

16 “Go and assemble the elders of Israel and say to them: The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has appeared to me and said: I have paid close attention to you and to what has been done to you in Egypt. 17 And I have promised you that I will bring you up from the misery of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, Hethites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites—a land flowing with milk and honey. 18 They will listen to what you say. Then you, along with the elders of Israel, must go to the king of Egypt and say to him: The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Now please let us go on a three-day trip into the wilderness so that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.

19 “However, I know that the king of Egypt will not allow you to go, even under force from a strong hand. 20 But when I stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with all my miracles that I will perform in it, after that, he will let you go. 21 And I will give these people such favor with the Egyptians that when you go, you will not go empty-handed. 22 Each woman will ask her neighbor and any woman staying in her house for silver and gold jewelry, and clothing, and you will put them on your sons and daughters. So, you will plunder the Egyptians.”

GOD already knew the heart of Pharaoh would resist, after all he would be losing free labor. Plus, as we witness what unfolds, we see the battle of powers – Pharaoh versus The GOD of the Israelites, the same GOD, JESUS reveals to us today, YHWH or Yahweh.

Exodus 4:1-31:

4 Moses answered, “What if they won’t believe me and will not obey me but say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you’?”

The Lord asked him, “What is that in your hand?”

“A staff,” he replied.

“Throw it on the ground,” he said. So, Moses threw it on the ground, it became a snake, and he ran from it. The Lord told Moses, “Stretch out your hand and grab it by the tail.” So, he stretched out his hand and caught it, and it became a staff in his hand. “This will take place,” he continued, “so that they will believe that the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.”

(I am told by those who manage snakes, you do not grab a snake by its tail.)

In addition the Lord said to him, “Put your hand inside your cloak.” So he put his hand inside his cloak, and when he took it out, his hand was diseased, resembling snow.[a] “Put your hand back inside your cloak,” he said. So, he put his hand back inside his cloak, and when he took it out, it had again become like the rest of his skin. “If they will not believe you and will not respond to the evidence of the first sign, they may believe the evidence of the second sign. And if they don’t believe even these two signs or listen to what you say, take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground. The water you take from the Nile will become blood on the ground.”

10 But Moses replied to the Lord, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent—either in the past or recently or since you have been speaking to your servant—because my mouth and my tongue are sluggish.”[b]

11 The Lord said to him, “Who placed a mouth on humans? Who makes a person mute or deaf, seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? 12 Now go! I will help you speak[c] and I will teach you what to say.”

13 Moses said, “Please, Lord, send someone else.”[d]

14 Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses, and he said, “Isn’t Aaron the Levite your brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, he is on his way now to meet you. He will rejoice when he sees you. 15 You will speak with him and tell him what to say. I will help both you and him to speak[e] and will teach you both what to do. 16 He will speak to the people for you. He will serve as a mouth for you, and you will serve as God to him. 17 And take this staff in your hand that you will perform the signs with.”

Moses’s Return to Egypt

18 Then Moses went back to his father-in-law, Jethro, and said to him, “Please let me return to my relatives in Egypt and see if they are still living.”

Jethro said to Moses, “Go in peace.”

19 Now in Midian the Lord told Moses, “Return to Egypt, for all the men who wanted to kill you are dead.” 20 So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey, and returned to the land of Egypt. And Moses took God’s staff in his hand.

21 The Lord instructed Moses, “When you go back to Egypt, make sure you do before Pharaoh all the wonders that I have put within your power. But I will harden his heart[f] so that he won’t let the people go. 22 And you will say to Pharaoh: This is what the Lord says: Israel is my firstborn son. 23 I told you: Let my son go so that he may worship me, but you refused to let him go. Look, I am about to kill your firstborn son!”

GOD gave a stern message for Moses to deliver to the Egyptian Pharaoh – “23 I told you: Let my son (Israel) go so that he may worship me (GOD), but you refused to let him go. Look, I am about to kill your firstborn son!”

GOD referred to the Israelite nation as “my son” and Moses would deliver that message to Pharaoh.

Moses house had to be in order when he delivered GOD’S message and when we, who proclaim the message of GOD, must also make sure our Spiritual life is in order, as well.

It seems that GOD waited to give Moses time to make sure his household was living according to the Law before Moses approached Pharaoh to deliver the Israelites from Egyptian slavery.

Keep in mind that Satan was just as active then, as he is today.

So, GOD had to get the attention of Moses before the deliverance of the Israelites could go forward.

When we do not confess our sins, GOD has HIS ways to get our attention or the attention of, in this case, Moses wife, Zipporah. In fact, her action saved Moses’ life---

Keep in mind at that period the Israelites were under the Law. Let’s read on -----

24 On the trip, at an overnight campsite, it happened that the Lord confronted him (Moses) and intended to put him to death. 25 So Zipporah took a flint, cut off her son’s foreskin, threw it at Moses’s feet, and said, “You are a bridegroom of blood to me!” 26 So he let him alone. At that time, she said, “You are a bridegroom of blood,” referring to the circumcision.

Moses was GOD’S chosen to deliver the Israelites from bondage, but first Moses had to be delivered from violating the Law regarding his own son. Zipporah took the action that Moses could not take and did not take. Once, Zipporah did what Moses should have done, did that reveal the power of GOD to her and did her action reveal to her that the GOD of the Israelites was the ONE TRUE GOD? Did Zipporah’s faith need to be strengthened? Speculation.

It is clear GOD wanted all in Moses household to be a family of faith to the ONE TRUE GOD before going on a mission trip to free the Israelites from bondage.

This is true for all of us who claim to be “Born Again” to have no unconfessed sin in our lives when serving our LORD.

The Reunion of Moses and Aaron 27 Now the Lord had said to Aaron, “Go and meet Moses in the wilderness.” So, he went and met him at the mountain of God and kissed him. 28 Moses told Aaron everything the Lord had sent him to say, and about all the signs he had commanded him to do. 29 Then Moses and Aaron went and assembled all the elders of the Israelites. 30 Aaron repeated everything the Lord had said to Moses and performed the signs before the people. 31 The people believed, and when they heard that the Lord had paid attention to them and that he had seen their misery, they knelt low and worshiped.

Discovering truth leads us to worship!!!

Blessings!!!

18 Moses’s father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, heard about everything that God had done for Moses and for God’s people Israel when the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt.

Now Jethro, Moses’s father-in-law, had taken in Zipporah, Moses’s wife, after he had sent her back, along with her two sons, one of whom was named Gershom[a] (because Moses had said, “I have been a resident alien in a foreign land”) and the other Eliezer (because he had said, “The God of my father was my helper and rescued me from Pharaoh’s sword”).[b]

Moses’s father-in-law, Jethro, along with Moses’s wife and sons, came to him in the wilderness where he was camped at the mountain of God. He sent word to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons.”

So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, bowed down, and then kissed him. They asked each other how they had been[c] and went into the tent. Moses recounted to his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardships that confronted them on the way, and how the Lord rescued them.

Jethro rejoiced over all the good things the Lord had done for Israel when he rescued them from the power of the Egyptians. 10 “Blessed be the Lord,” Jethro exclaimed, “who rescued you from the power of Egypt and from the power of Pharaoh. He has rescued the people from under the power of Egypt! 11 Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods, because he did wonders when the Egyptians acted arrogantly against Israel.”[d]

12 Then Jethro, Moses’s father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal with Moses’s father-in-law in God’s presence.

Jethro was a priest who saw the GOD of the Israelites as THE ONE TRUE GOD, YHWH, or Yahweh.

Blessings!!!
