Marriage - In the Presence of God - Genesis 1 and 2 - May 2, 2010

Bible Study – Marriage – In the Presence of God – May 2, 2010

This begins a new series on marriage. Our new study is entitled “I (Still) Do.”

Our scripture today is Genesis 1:26-28a; 2:7, 15-22.

During the month of May we will study selected scriptures dealing with various aspects of marriage.

GOD holds marriage very sacred. Most little girls long for their wedding day. Weddings are a joyous occasion. I heard Tony Campollo, Eastern College Sociology Professor, say that every marriage gives the opportunity for love. When males are attracted to females, many times it is lust. Lust can turn to love but don’t confuse lust with love. Marriage is just the beginning of forming and building a lifelong loving relationship. Building a loving relationship is by working together through the good times and the not so good times. Through the years, relationships either go deeper or fall apart. Is your mate your very best friend? If not he/she should be.

Communication with each other is vital. Working together, sharing, trusting and building a relationship of unity with each other and GOD through CHRIST. Marriage is tough, especially when children come along. Men, you must realize that your bride will shift her attention from you to the child. She will still love you but you will not be the center of attention.

When couples marry today, you often hear in their wedding vows that they will remain together as long as they love each other. Here again, I think couples confuse the emotion of that first romance with love. Males and females often want to maintain that feeling but it is not going to last. However, during the romance period that is where building a solid relationship is important. Trying to maintain the desire for romance often leads to an affair. Some may say, “I have lost that feeling.” This is one of Satan’s strategies to lead a person into adultery and often into a lifelong search for the ideal marriage partner.

On the wedding day of her daughter, someone said to the mother, “Your daughter seems to be marrying a fine young man.” She answered, “Well at least he will do for her first husband.” Young married couples need the support of their parents, in-laws, friends and each other.

Later in life, mid-life crisis can raise its head in either the lives of the male or female. This can cause a person to seek changes in his/her life such as a new car, new job or new career or something different such as a new relationship. If you have such feelings, reveal them to your spouse and seek Christian counseling. Spouses if your spouse tells you they are having such feelings. Pay attention. The two of you can work through mid-life crisis with help. This is often not an easy time for either spouse.
My wife and I have been married for 51 years. I hate to say this but I was raised during the period when the wife did everything. She washed, ironed, cooked, cleaned house, worked outside the home, birthed children, cared for the children, took care of her husband and the list goes on. I am very ashamed of my attitude and failure to support my wife around the house in the early years of our marriage. House work was not for men. The men who helped their wives were “Hen pecked.” No red blooded male wanted to be “hen pecked” when I came along. Thank the good LORD that notion has changed in most of our society. Although it still exists in some areas. I say, “Men be real men and help your wife. Love them, cherish them and never lay a hand on them in any abusive way. You can defend yourself but do not be the aggressor except to love them and hug them.”

I know things have changed and the male helps the female, which is great. Our two (2) sons and two (2) sons-in-laws do a great job in being fathers and helpmates. I am very proud of them as well as our two (2) daughters and our daughter-in-law.
Being married for 51 years, means we have experienced a great deal in our married life. It has been going through the difficult times that resulted in our love growing deeper.

As stated earlier no man or woman should ever abuse his/her spouse or children. If you are in an abusive situation get help. If the abusive spouse can get wise counsel and control himself or herself then there may be an opportunity for a good marriage. But I have little patience with abuse.

GOD intended for man and woman to be one in the bond of love through the miracle of marriage.

Let’s read Genesis 1:26-28a:

26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth,[11] Syr reads sky, and over every animal of the land and the creatures that crawl[12] Lit scurry on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female. 28 God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it.

Notice “US” in verse 26. “US” referred to the Trinity of GOD – GOD THE FATHER, GOD THE SON and GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT. The Hebrew word used for GOD was Elohim in Genesis Chapter one which is plural and embraces the concept of the Trinity. The Trinity was present when man was formed. Man was formed in their image. I think physically and Spiritually - The trinity of mankind - Body - Soul and Spirit.

The Hebrew word for “man” is “ish” which can be translated Adam. The word can also be used to refer to “man” or “mankind.” When it refers to “mankind” it includes male and female.

In verse 26 “man” refers to “mankind” because of the use of the word “they”. “They” will rule but I think the use of the word “man” denotes order to confirm that GOD first formed the male. HE formed Adam using common materials, dust of the earth, which HE had created. When the word “created” is used, it means creating something out of nothing and only GOD can do that. GOD took the material HE created to form man.

Then GOD gave this formed earth material HIS life and Adam became a living, functioning human. GOD breathed life into man’s body and man became a living human. The body without breath is dead and the life giving spirit escapes. Since the fall of Adam and Eve, death came into earth. That is why CHRIST had to come to earth, as a human, to redeem all who will accept HIM as SAVIOR from sin and death.
GOD made woman by taking a body part from Adam. GOD did not make Eve by forming her using more earth materials. HE took a body part from Adam which HE had already breathed the breath of life into. If GOD had formed the female separately, there would have to be a male SAVIOR and a female SAVIOR. GOD’S intent was the male and female to become one or brought back into unity through marriage. HE intended for the couple to rule over HIS creation which included the things living on earth and managing earth’s resources. HE intended for them to reproduce and multiply as the result of their union as one. GOD began the life of mankind with one breath of life into one formed body of clay.

Since the original sin mankind has been separated from an intimate loving relationship with GOD. CHRIST broke that barrier and opens the way to GOD through HIM for all who will accept HIS passion. Through the miracle of rebirth in the spirit of mankind, CHRIST restores all Christians back to unity with GOD through HIM. Once restored, then Christians can begin rebuilding their relationship with GOD through CHRIST. It is an awesome journey.

In verse 27, we learn that GOD created mankind or both male and female in HIS own image. GOD’S crowning creation was male and female to represent HIM upon earth and to rule earth, care for earth, bring earth under their control and reproduce. Woman’s existence is the result of man’s existence which was GOD’S intent because of the unity of one in spirit. Man and woman are to function as one and in harmony with each other. Woman is man’s help mate, who comes along side of man to complete man and to provide the female perspective on matters. GOD never intended for woman to be the slave of man or man to be the slave of woman.

Genesis Chapters one and two seem to be somewhat redundant. Chapter two gives some details that Chapter one does not.

Let’s read Genesis 2:7, 15-20:

7 Then the Lord God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.
15 The Lord God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and watch over it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden,[16] Gn 3:1–2 17 but you must not eat[17] Lit eat from it from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.”[18] Gn 3:5 18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is like him.”[19] Pr 31:11–12 19 So the Lord God formed out of the ground each wild animal and each bird of the sky, and brought each to the man to see what he would call it. And whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal; but for the man[20] Or for Adam no helper was found who was like him.

In Genesis Chapter Two the Hebrew word for GOD was Yahweh, which is the personal, covenant name for GOD. It denotes HIS commitment to mankind and HIS covenant relationship mankind. In essence, it is GOD'S commitment never to abandon mankind and especially those who accept HIS SON JESUS.

GOD formed man using dust which HE created. The word used for formed means to fashion or shape as a potter would sculpture clay. The formation of man was a hands-on expression of love for the product HE was creating with HIS own hands. GOD created life by breathing life into the nostrils of Adam. Adam was made first. The original scripture implies that man was “gradually formed” expressing that GOD was more intimately involved with the details of formation of man. GOD could have spoken Adam into existence but GOD wanted to be personally involved. GOD wanted the formation of man to be perfect in all aspects as GOD is perfect. When man was formed to GOD’S satisfaction, HE came face-to-face with HIS creation and breathed HIS life into man. Man became a living being ignited by power, love and Spirit of GOD.

There is a clear distinction between the formation of man and animals. It seems that the formation of animals was quicker using the materials HE had created.
GOD placed Adam in the Garden of Eden and gave him specific instructions for managing the garden. GOD asked Adam to name all the animals HE had formed. GOD gave him specific instructions about what to do and what not to do. GOD did not make man a robot but gave him freedom of choice. GOD placed many trees in the garden which had delicious edible fruit. GOD placed two (2) trees in the garden. One tree was to give life and the other tree would result in death. The only tree which GOD Adam or Eve not to eat the fruit of was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which would result in death.

The animals GOD formed could not give Adam the level of comfort or companionship that he needed. GOD saw that Adam needed someone with whom he could interact to accomplish GOD’S will and purpose. So GOD decided that Adam needed a help mate who was like him. One who would have the same values and be compatible with him to obediently serve GOD with the freewill to choose.

Let’s read Genesis 2:21-22:

21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place. 22 Then the Lord God made the rib He had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man.[21] 1 Co 11:8,12

GOD used a body part from Adam to make woman. HE did not use the head to imply that she would rule man or the feet to imply that she would be walked upon by man. Instead, HE selected a part from the side of man to imply that she would come along beside the man to make him complete and as an equal.

GOD formed Adam but HE made woman from Adam’s body part. This reveals the mystery of marriage. GOD’S intent was for man and woman to be separate until a time when they will be reunited as one through the bond of love and marriage. GOD separated them by taking part of Adam to make Eve. Through the miracle of marriage the two became one. The two became one for the purpose of achieving GOD’S plan and purpose – such as to manage the affairs of earth, its animal inhabitants, resources and to reproduce. It is clear that GOD intended for marriage to be between one man and one woman because HE tells them to be fruitful and multiply.

The marriage relationship is a reflection of GOD’S desire for a relationship with HIS crowning creation, man and woman. Just as HIS vision for husband and wife is to cleave to one another in a bond of boundless, unselfish love, HE wants us to cleave to HIM out of a pure heart of love for HIM. HE desires fellowship, harmony, respect and unity. GOD has used the marriage relationship to show the extent of HIS love for HIS children. The book of Hosea is a classic example of the extent GOD will go to not sever the covenant relationship HE has with HIS children, individually or collectively as a group or nation, through CHRIST. Once we accept HIM as our SAVIOR, HE clings to us even when we turn our backs on HIM. Never forget that. HE always welcomes HIS children back into an intimate relationship with HIM no matter what we may have done.

Since, we have focused on marriage, some single folks may ask, “If everyone is to be married, where is my spouse?” The real answer lies with GOD but the Apostle Paul may give us a clue in 1 Corinthian 7:8-9:

A Word to the Unmarried

8 I say to the unmarried and to widows: It is good for them if they remain as I am (Not married – However it is believed that Paul was married at one time because he was a Pharisee.). 9 But if they do not have self-control, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with desire.

In essence Paul was saying it is better to be single and serve the LORD than to be married and have to share your time with another. But if you burn with desire it is better to marry. Paul seems to imply that not being married is a gift from GOD but not every Christian has this gift.

Ministry - The Right Stuff - 2 Corinthians 8 and 9 - April 25, 2010

Bible Study – Ministry – The Right Support – April 25, 2010

This is our final lesson in our series “Ministry Done Right.”

Our scripture is 2 Corinthians 8:8-15; 9:6-11.

This is a fitting study to follow motivation. Supporting a ministry requires the leadership of the LORD, as well as, supporting the ministry financially, prayerfully and with encouragement and sweat equity. Our motive for supporting a ministry is also important in GOD’S eyes. It takes money to run a ministry, lots of prayer, much sweat equity, faithfulness, encouragement and determination to name a few things. GOD calls Christians to support various ministries in various ways.

There is a ministry in Spartanburg with which my wife and I are involved. The couple who were called to this ministry rely upon the LORD to provide their needs. The couple has five (5) sweet children. It is an amazing family. A church had been providing them a house for a year. The year was coming to a close and they needed a house. The church was helping them find a home. (Modified version) The couple wanted to live in the inner city. They found a home in the inner city. It had been listed for $116,000 but had been reduced to $54,000. The ministry had $700.00 in the housing fund. Then they learned that the house was headed for auction and their realtor told them they could possibly get the house for around or under $40,000. The housing fund by this time had $27,000 in it so the ministry offered $27,000 for the house. Principles in the financial institution that held the mortgage told them they could not accept $27,000, could they up their offer. In a step of faith, they offered $32,000 hoping the additional $5,000 could be raised over the weekend, which they did. After much waiting the $32,000 was accepted. The house is structurally sound but it needs renovation and updating. It is a two (2) story home that in its day was a very nice home. Renovation is under way as I write this. GOD is awesome. There is much more but the point is that GOD works within the means available to accomplish HIS purposes. Three (3) months before the couple began looking at this house, a nearby businessman offered $70,000 for the house, which was turned down. The house is on a corner of a very busy street. The house will accommodate the family of five with room to spare. It is ideally located.

All who have participated in this venture have experienced the joy of seeing the hand of the LORD work. As renovation has begun, we continue to see the mighty hand of the LORD as the project moves toward completion in the next month. There will be continued joy as we see the hand of the LORD work through this couple and as HE reveals to them and us why HE chose this home for them. I believe it will be a beacon of GOD’S love to a city of people who need salvation and encouragement in the LORD.

GOD desires for HIS children to give freely from a heart overflowing with love and gratitude for what CHRIST has done for them. HE never forces HIS children to give from an unwilling heart.

Paul was reminding the Corinthian Christians that there was a need to provide money to the Christian Jews in Jerusalem. There are several possibilities why they needed support. (1) There was a famine in the Jerusalem area. (2) Some of the Jews had become Christians and the traditional Jews had refused to give the Christian Jews work. They were in great need of support. Paul had made this need known to the Corinthian Christians about a year earlier and they enthusiastically embraced the effort to provide these needy Jewish Christians with provisions. However, their enthusiasm had waned so Paul was reminding them of this need.

Let’s read 2 Corinthians 8:8-11:

8 I am not saying this as a command. Rather, by means of the diligence of others, I am testing the genuineness of your love. 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ: although He was rich, for your sake He became poor, so that by His poverty you might become rich. 10 Now I am giving an opinion on this because it is profitable for you, who a year ago began not only to do something but also to desire it.[2] Lit to will 11 But now finish the task[3] Lit finish the doing as well, that just as there was eagerness to desire it, so there may also be a completion from what you have.

Paul began by making it clear to the Corinthian Christians that he was not commanding them to participate in what he was about to suggest. However, their willingness to respond would reveal their understanding of the love that GOD has for them. It would reveal their hearts.

Paul reminded them that CHRIST left heaven and HIS glory to come to earth to save them. CHRIST was rich beyond measure in heaven but HE gave it up to become poor for their sake.

A year earlier the Corinthian Christians had begun a task to provide support for the needy Christians in Jerusalem and then because of their disunity they lost interest and put the effort on hold. Paul was challenging them to finish the task. In essence, Paul was saying, “You are the ones who will miss a blessing from GOD if you do not complete what GOD has led you to do, therefore complete it.” When GOD leads Christians to do something, even if their attitude changes, the need has not changed. This is not to say that if the LORD changes the direction we are headed not to follow HIS leading.

This is where unity is vital. Not every Christian has discernment but those who do not should listen to those who do. This is the why GOD intends for the body of believers to operate. Just as the parts of the body work together to care for the body, so does the body of believers.

Dr. Henry Balckaby, author of “Experiencing God”, available from LifeWay Church Resources, One LifeWay, Nashville, TN 37234-0175 or Baptist Book Stores (Get the kit with DVD’S of Dr. Blackaby’s lectures along with the book, if you can afford it. (Also available in Polish in Poland), gives a great illustration of the unity of the body. There is a stick drawing of a person walking in the middle of a railroad track. The eyes are looking down the railroad tracks and as far as they can see there is no train. But the ears are picking up a sound of a train coming. But the eyes say there is no train because I do not see a train. The feet feel a vibration and they tell the eyes, I feel a train coming. But the eyes still looking forward say, there is no train because as far as I can see, there is no train. Of course, the train is behind the person and from the eyes point-of-view no train was coming. That is why the eyes need to rely upon the other senses for the body to function efficiently.

In a body of believers, GOD equips Christians with different gifts of the HOLY SPIRIT for the purpose of leading and caring for the body of believers, the church. It is important that those who do not have certain gifts to listen and pay attention to those who do. Unity is important in accomplishing that which GOD leads the body to do. When we are in unity, if a member gets hurt or has a need we respond, just as the human body does if we hit our finger with the hammer or when we get thirsty. The human body takes care of itself and the body of believers takes care of themselves and reaches out to others around them.

In our previous studies Paul had been addressing the need for unity in the Corinthian church.

Let’s read 2 Corinthians 8:12-15:

12 For if the eagerness is there, it is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have. 13 It is not that there may be relief for others and hardship for you, but it is a question of equality[4] Lit but from equality — 14 at the present time your surplus is [available]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. for their need, so that their abundance may also become [available]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. for your need, that there may be equality. 15 As it has been written: The person who gathered much did not have too much, and the person who gathered little did not have too little.[5] Ex 16:18

Paul was saying if you still have the eagerness to complete this effort then do what you are capable of doing. Don’t let your inability to overwhelm the ability you have because GOD will provide. HIS provision could well be through others joining you when you do your part. Thus, several pieces make a whole to get the job done.
Paul in essence was saying many people have the desire to give but they do not have the means to give. A person should give according to his/her means because doing so can inspire others to help. Giving was not intended to be a burden. JESUS commended the widow when she placed her small coins in the temple treasury as recorded in Mark 12:41-44 -
41 Sitting across from the temple treasury, He watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little.[23] Lit dropped in two lepta, which is a quadrans; the lepton was the smallest and least valuable Gk coin in use. The quadrans, 1/64 of a daily wage, was the smallest Roman coin. 43 Summoning His disciples, He said to them, “• I assure you: This poor widow has put in more than all those giving to the temple treasury. 44 For they all gave out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she possessed—all she had to live on.”

Some believe that you are to give beyond your means. True, if led by the HOLY SPIRIT but make sure the HOLY SPIRIT is leading you. That is my opinion.
Here again is where motive comes into effect. There are fund raising events and it is easy to get caught up in the hype. We have to be careful to give or pledge as led by our LORD and not from being coerced by man. What is our motivation? Do we do it because we want a wonderful story to tell of GOD’S provision to boost our ego or to test GOD? Allow GOD to lead you.

Does this mean don’t give? NO! But know that GOD loves a cheerful giver. When our heart is in right relationship with GOD then our giving will be right. GOD provides from HIS storehouse when HIS children give as HE leads them.

Paul was addressing the attitude of sharing with each other during times of need. GOD blesses some with abundance so they can share with those in need.
Paul used Old Testament scripture to drive home his point in verse 15. The scripture was taken from Exodus 16:17-20: (GOD providing manna (food) to the Israelites when they were in the wilderness.)

17 So the Israelites did this. Some gathered a lot, some a little. 18 When they measured it by quarts,[6] Lit by an omer the person who gathered a lot had no surplus, and the person who gathered a little had no shortage. Each gathered as much as he needed to eat. 19 Moses said to them, “No one is to let any of it remain until morning.” 20 But they didn’t listen to Moses; some people left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and smelled. Therefore Moses was angry with them.
HIS provision was sufficient for all. Those who tried to hoard, lost it.

Let’s read 2 Corinthians 9: 6-11:

6 Remember this:[4] Lit And this the person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not out of regret or out of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work. 9 As it is written: He has scattered; He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.[5] Ps 112:9 10 Now the One who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will provide and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness,[6] Isaiah 55:10–11; Hs 10:12 11 as you are enriched in every way for all generosity, which produces thanksgiving to God through us. 12 For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing in many acts of thanksgiving to God.

Paul addressed the principle of multiples or law of the harvest. The more a person plants the more he/she reaps. Conversely, the less a person plants the less he/she reaps. GOD’S desire is for a person to give freely from his/her heart. GOD wants a cheerful giver. A cheerful giver is a happy giver and the fact he/she is giving according to GOD’S will is an overwhelming joy.

Verse 7 is a key verse. Notice it says “Each person should give as he has decided in his heart.” How do you decide in your heart? That is where you and GOD come together and discuss the matter. In your heart you can be honest with HIM. LORD, I do not have the means but I want to do something. What do you want me to do? Or LORD I need discernment to know what to do. Or LORD I just do not like this opportunity. Is it me or are YOU trying to telling me something? You may need to wait or act quickly. There are many more possibilities.

Verse 8, could lead us to wrong motives. GOD can and does make every grace flow to a cheerful giver. Caution – this does not always mean those who give will get more money or wealth. It can be that they will receive greater joy for being obedient.
Verse 9 comes from Psalms 112:9. This verse helps us to focus on GOD as the provider of all things. We are stewards of the things GOD provides. HE gives the increase for the purpose of meeting needs for ourselves and others, as HE leads us.
When GOD leads a Christian to go beyond his/her means, HE will help provide. It does not mean that the Christian led to extend himself/herself will not struggle or find it difficult but he/she will experience the power and provision of GOD.

I have to share this with you. The couple I wrote about at the beginning of this lesson, living on faith. Christmas Eve, 2008, I was preparing to leave home to do some final shopping. As I prepared to leave the house, I had written a check to give to this couple’s ministry. It was behind the telephone. I had intended to drop it off by their ministry office but it had slipped my mind. As I prepared to leave, the LORD prompted me to take the check with me. I said to myself, that did not make sense because their office was closed for Christmas. I tried to reject the idea but I felt compelled to put the check in my billfold. So, I did.

The couple lived about 15-20 miles from their ministry office. My wife and I did our shopping and made a final stop about two (2) hours later at the grocery. We needed wrapping paper so I dropped my wife at the grocery and I went to a nearby drugstore. I finished my shopping and came back to the grocery parking lot. I called my wife to tell her I would wait for her in the car. She informed me that I needed to come into the store. So I did but asked her to meet me near the front of the store. You know how it is impossible to find your spouse in the grocery. So as I waited for her, guess who came bounding around the corner of the very aisle where I was standing. You got it. It was none other than Leroy and two (2) of his children. Leroy and his wife are the ministry couple. Needless to say I was shocked because they lived the 15-20 miles away. I said, “Leroy, what are you doing here?” He said, “He needed to pick up a few things and was in the area so he stopped in to get them.” I said, “Well here is something for the ministry.” Bottom line, the ministry did not have enough money to pay the couple a salary for December. I still marvel at the awesomeness of our LORD.
Isn’t GOD awesome! HE knew the need. HE knew I had something that would meet that need. HE knew that HE would bring us together. The timing was a matter of seconds. We had been to a number of places in town and this was our last stop. I had no intention of coming into the grocery but GOD knew I had to be at the right spot at the right time. A few seconds meant the difference between Leroy’s and my path crossing. GOD’S timing is always perfect.

I often think of my hesitation to do a simple thing as put the check into my billfold. Obedience is so important to both you and the person or persons GOD intends for you to help. Or even for someone GOD has called to help you.

When giving, first give yourself to CHRIST and build a loving trusting relationship with HIM. Let HIM lead you to all truth. Serving HIM will blow your minds because HE is awesome!!! Blessings to all.

Ministry - The Right Motivation - 2 Corinthians 5 - April 18, 2010

Bible Study – Ministry – The Right Motivation – April 18, 2010

This is study two (2) in our series “Ministry Done Right.”

Our scripture is 2 Corinthians 5:9-21.

We discussed having the right stuff in our previous study. This week we consider our motivation. The LORD had to shine HIS light deep into my life over the years to reveal my motivation. It is embarrassing to admit that in the early years my ego had been my motivation. Thus it becomes one of my first areas I have to examine when either asked to do something or launch into a project. Is the LORD leading me or am I leading me. That is why I try to wait upon the LORD to make sure HE is leading me. Notice, I used the word “try.” I still get into trouble. The only bumper sticker I have ever considered putting on my car bumper “I am a Christian still under construction.”
There is suitable scripture for examining our innermost being. It is found in Psalms 139:23-24 -
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Searching is one thing but the trying is another. From time to time, as uncomfortable as trying may be, we need for GOD’S Holy Light to shine deep within us to expose that which we either do not see or do not want to see. Hidden motives lurk within many of us. Having the right motive is important in any ministry. Remember all Christians are called to ministry.

Background:

Paul was stoned Acts 14:19-20 - 19 Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and when they had won over the crowds and stoned Paul, they dragged him out of the city, thinking he was dead. 20 After the disciples surrounded him, he got up and went into the town. The next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.

Many believe, as I do, that Paul died when he was stoned and taken up to the third heaven as recorded in 2 Corinthians 12:2-5 - 2 I know a man in Christ who was caught up into the third heaven 14 years ago. Whether he was in the body or out of the body, I don’t know; God knows. 3 I know that this man—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows— 4 was caught up into paradise. He heard inexpressible words, which a man is not allowed to speak. 5 I will boast about this person, but not about myself, except of my weaknesses.

I think the man Paul was referring to was himself. The first heaven is where the birds and clouds are. The second heaven is where the sun, moon, stars and planets are. The third heaven is where GOD is. The account of this event came later in his letter to the Corinthians. Paul’s knowledge of death may have turned some of the Christians off or they may have thought he was bragging when he talked about it. Did they interpret Paul’s knowledge of CHRIST and the workings of the SPIRIT as Spiritual arrogance? We can only speculate as to why some of the Corinthian Christians had a problem with Paul.

When a fellow believer or believers have a special encounter with the workings of the LORD and they share the experience, do they come across as being more Spiritually mature because of the encounter? When they do, it can turn off others. Often fellow Christians do not share experiences or encounters with the LORD because of the fear of being labeled or not being able to live up to a preconceived notion that they should be more Spiritually mature because of the experience.

Had this happened to Paul among some Corinthian Christians? I do not know but I offer it for consideration.

The following scripture precedes the scripture for our study and help better understand our focus scripture:

2 Corinthians 5:1-8:

Our Future after Death

1 For we know that if our earthly house, a tent,[1] Our present physical body is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house[2] a building . . . a house = our future body not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 And, in fact, we groan in this one, longing to put on our house from heaven, 3 since, when we are clothed,[3] Other mss read stripped we will not be found naked. 4 Indeed, we who are in this tent groan, burdened as we are, because we do not want to be unclothed but clothed, so that mortality may be swallowed up by life. 5 And the One who prepared us for this very thing is God, who gave us the Spirit as a down payment. 6 Therefore, though we are always confident and know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord— 7 for we • walk by faith, not by sight— 8 yet we are confident and satisfied to be out of the body and at home with the Lord.

Paul was discussing life after death. Paul referred to his body as a tent, which houses his born-again Spirit. I like to refer to our human body as our earth suit. Our earth suit or tent allows us to live on earth after our salvation. Paul was saying that as Christians we look forward to the moment we cast off our flesh clothes and put on our heavenly clothes. Paul was telling the Corinthian Christians that as our bodies age, we get aches and pains and long to be released from our bodies. When believers received CHRIST, GOD gave each believer a down payment of the HOLY SPIRIT as an assurance that our faith in CHRIST is real and secure in our eternal life.

Now, to our scripture.

Let’s read 2 Corinthians 5:9-11a:

9 Therefore, whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to be pleasing to Him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may be repaid for what he has done in the body, whether good or bad. 11 Knowing, then, the fear of the Lord, we persuade people.

The word “therefore” ties this scripture to the preceding scripture. Paul was speaking of serving GOD whether or not we are on earth or in heaven. I am reminded of the model prayer JESUS taught in Matthew 6:10 - 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Whether a born-again is in heaven or on earth, it is important to obey the will of our FATHER. As Christians our citizenship is in heaven, therefore, bragging about our Spirituality is not necessary. Paul encouraged the Corinthian Christians to seek a deeper walk with CHRIST.

Obedience was the issue because everyone is accountable to GOD. GOD will judge the non-Christian as well as the Christian. The non-Christian will be judged for rejecting CHRIST and the Christian will be judged on his/her faithfulness or obedience to the leadership of the HOLY SPIRIT. For the Christian it will be the moment of receiving his/her rewards.

This is where our motive comes into the equation. We may say, “But LORD, I did so-and-so in your name.” The answer could be, “Sorry, you wanted to glorify yourself. You wanted the praise of others. But there are other areas where your heart was in tune with MY HEART. Do you remember when you gave an encouraging word and a smile to so-and-so? Well, here is a chunk of gold.” I think all of us will be shocked at what our LORD has counted as valuable in service to HIM. HE wants Christians to look at others through HIS eyes and to respond as HE leads them. Our motive to serve needs to be pure before the LORD.

The Reverend Dwight L. Moody once said “Character is what you are in the dark.” In our last study, we discussed being a fragrance for the LORD. Christians are on display 24/7. We are either giving off a sweet smell which glorifies the LORD or giving off a bad odor which does not draw others to HIM. Whether we like it or not, we influence others either positively or negatively for CHRIST. This is a tremendous burden or blessing. How can we be a positive influence and blessing? Come on you can answer that question - When we are in the right relationship with HIM. When we are in right relationship, it is natural to represent CHRIST positively because CHRIST shines through HIS children.

Let’s read 2 Corinthians 5:11b-15:

We are completely open before God, and I hope we are completely open to our consciences as well. 12 We are not commending ourselves to you again, but giving you an opportunity to be proud of us, so that you may have a reply for those who take pride in the outward appearance[4] Lit in face rather than in the heart. 13 For if we are out of our mind, it is for God; if we have a sound mind, it is for you. 14 For Christ’s love compels[5] Or For the love of Christ impels, or For the love of Christ controls us, since we have reached this conclusion: if One died for all, then all died. 15 And He died for all so that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for the One who died for them and was raised.

There was a problem between Paul and some of the Corinthian Christians. We are not sure what the problem was but Paul was making it clear that his motives were pure before the LORD and he hoped they also knew that his motive for ministering to them was above board and pure as well. He was not hiding anything from them nor was he being Spiritually arrogant.

Paul was saying that they had seen and heard him present CHRIST and he was not going to do that again. In essence, he was saying you folks know me and the message which has been delivered. We have presented truth and you can be proud of us for sticking to the truth and not bloviating. Keep in mind that there are those who preach a message with great fanfare and emotion. They appeal to the flesh. Appealing to the flesh can lead a person into false notions about CHRIST. Being a true Christian is all about the heart and a daily walk with CHRIST.

Paul was saying that he might present a stem-winder of a message but if he did it was because the Spirit of GOD was compelling him to do so. GOD was the author of his message to them. The message of CHRIST was compelling because all humans at one time were dead. But the Good News was that all who believe in CHRIST have been made alive for all eternity because of HIS passion. This Good News was exciting and life changing and could not be kept hidden but had to be shared with those who are dead. He reminds them that all of us were dead at one time and CHRIST has made us alive for all eternity.

Let’s read 2 Corinthians 5:16-21:

The Ministry of Reconciliation

16 From now on, then, we do not know[6] Or regard anyone in a purely human way.[7] Lit anyone according to the flesh Even if we have known[8] Or have regarded Christ in a purely human way,[9] Lit Christ according to the flesh yet now we no longer know[10] Or regard Him like that. 17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things[11] Other mss read look, all new things have come. 18 Now everything is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that is, in Christ, God was reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed the message of reconciliation to us. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ; certain that God is appealing through us, we plead on Christ’s behalf, “Be reconciled to God.” 21 He made the One who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

I mentioned earlier that all Christians are called to ministry. In my opinion, all Christians have been called to the ministry of reconciliation. All humans are alienated from GOD because of the original sin. GOD allowed CHRIST, out of HIS infinite love for all humans, to leave HIS glory in heaven to come to earth as a human. CHRIST lived as a human and gave HIS life to break the sin barrier. HIS resurrection is proof that HE broke the sin barrier so that all who believe in HIM are reconciled or brought back into fellowship with GOD. All who believe in the Passion of CHRIST experience the miracle of rebirth and are born-again in their Spirit.

Let’s explore what Paul was saying.

Because Paul, along with all true Christians, had experienced the miracle of reconciliation, they saw the purpose of CHRIST and the love of GOD in a more intimate way. They saw others through the eyes of GOD. Paul saw all humans as either reconciled with GOD through CHRIST or alienated from HIM. There was no in between. CHRIST gave HIS life to provide the opportunity for all who would believe in HIM to be reconciled to GOD just as HE and the FATHER are one.

Those who believe in CHRIST experience the miracle of rebirth. Old things have passed away and life with CHRIST is new and exciting because HE has made all who believe in HIM new through the renewing of their minds, from being flesh controlled to Spirit controlled. A Christian’s mind is being reconciled to GOD through the process of sanctification. This is building a solid relationship with CHRIST as we yield ourselves to HIM on a daily basis.

Paul was saying that the ministry of CHRIST was reconciliation. CHRIST came to earth to reconcile all humans who would accept HIM as their SAVIOR to GOD. GOD’S desire is to restore the fellowship HE had with Adam and Eve before they sinned. GOD did not allow CHRIST to come to earth for the purpose of condemning people but to offer them hope for all eternity through HIM. This is the Good News of the Gospel of CHRIST. All humans are sinners and condemned to death because of sin but those who accept CHRIST as their SAVIOR see through Spiritual eyes and see fellow humans from a different perspective. They share the Good News of salvation with those who are non-Christians because their hearts have been changed and they see truth.

GOD reconciled Christians to Himself through CHRIST and HE in turn calls them to the ministry of reconciliation. GOD wants all humans to be restored to the relationship and fellowship HE first intended when HE created male and female.

Through the ministry of reconciliation GOD has made each Christian HIS Ambassador. Our ministry is “Have you been reconciled to GOD through CHRIST? If not, ask CHRIST to forgive you of your sins, no matter how bad you think they are, accept the fact that CHRIST died on the cross to conquer sin and remove its barrier and ask HIM to come into your life.” When a person makes this request, he/she is reconciled to GOD through CHRIST.

Then Paul gives us a statement that you know is one of my favorite.

21 He (GOD) made the One (JESUS) who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Just think about the fact that through reconciliation, as a Christian, you are made righteous before GOD. You received the gift of eternal life, are born into the family of GOD, received the HOLY SPIRIT, made a citizen of heaven and made an ambassador by GOD. All Christians are called to the ministry of reconciliation. What does that mean? Build your relationship with GOD, through CHRIST, get to know HIM and allow HIM to lead you into obedient service.

When a Christian is in the right relationship with CHRIST, he/she is also in HIS will. Maintaining the right relationship also opens Christians to examination by the HOLY SPIRIT. When Christians are in right relationship their motives are in harmony with HIS.

Ministry - The Right Stuff - 2 Corinthians 2, 3 and 4 - April 11, 2010

Bible Study – Ministry - The Right Stuff – April 11, 2010

This begins a new series of study entitled “Ministry Done Right.”

Our scripture for this lesson is 2 Corinthians 2: 14-17; 3:4-5, 18; 4:1-2, 5-6, 16-18.

Our studies for April will be:

April 18 – The right Motivation - 2 Corinthians 5:9-21- Christians in ministry.

April 25 – The Right Support - 2 Corinthians 8:8-15; 9:6-11 – Supporting Ministry.

Ministry done right is very important as well as having the right stuff. What is the right stuff? First, Christians must be called by GOD through the HOLY SPIRIT to ministry. Often, we hear marvelous stories from those called to ministry about how the hand of GOD is working in their lives and the ministry to which HE has called them. Ministry goes smooth at times but just because a Christian is called to a ministry does not mean that things will always go smoothly. It is vital that a Christian know he/she is being called by GOD. Ministry done right or having the right stuff comes from the equipping of the HOLY SPIRIT. It is having the right relationship with CHRIST. It is getting self out of the way and letting GOD lead, guide and empower you to serve HIM, particularly when the going gets tough.

Let’s consider faith. Of course a Christian must have his/her faith well grounded in and built upon the foundation of CHRIST. But then there is faith as a gift. Not everyone called to ministry has this special gift of faith because he/she may not need it. Let me explain.

This special gift of faith is when a Christian is called to step out on faith where GOD will provide your needs. To step out hoping GOD will provide your needs is not that type of faith. This type of faith is knowing and not hoping that GOD will provide your needs regardless of the circumstances. That assurance comes from GOD. Once a person has experienced salvation, he/she is eager to serve the LORD. Often in the zeal of wanting to serve GOD, we get ahead of where GOD wants us to be.

I learned this the hard way. After I committed my life to CHRIST in 1971 I have wanted to be on the leading edge of service to GOD. However, in my zest to serve, I got ahead of GOD. Some of my zeal came from my ego, which GOD dealt with. There were times I thought GOD was lagging behind and needed to catch up with me. HE let me run ahead of HIM but then HE let me run into a wall a number of times to get my attention. After a number of years of hitting a few walls, HE finally got my attention and I began waiting upon HIM. The problem was, I was deciding what was important and because I thought it was important, I thought it was an open invitation for me to get it done. I had to learn that HE wants HIS work to be done more than I do. HIS timing is always perfect. Wait upon the LORD. I thought it was my faith that was important. I needed to have faith that GOD can do all things, which is true but because I have faith that GOD can do all things, did not mean to plow straight ahead to do them. I needed to wait upon the LORD.

GOD calls some of HIS children to ministries that require a special gift of faith. This type of faith is personal and is for the person or persons HE has called and equipped. The person or persons may have a great need and unless GOD provides it, he/she or they will be in a world of trouble. GOD provides but most often not until it is needed. This type of faith is a gift. If a Christian launches his/her own faith building program to live totally dependent upon GOD to provide all his/her needs without being called to do so, will be disappointed and possibly discouraged. We are often taught that we must have the faith for a faith act to take place. If something requiring faith does not happen, we conclude our faith was weak. When GOD leads Christians to take a step of faith, it always produces the desired result. It may not be what we think was the best result but it will always be the right result because GOD is sovereign.

A friend of mine, Hugh, told me of a missionary friend of his who lived on faith. He trusted the LORD with every need. His missionary friend, John, came home on leave from his mission work. John had asked Hugh if he could pick up his son and take him to a banquet where he was to speak. Hugh thought it would be good for his son and John to spend some time together. Hugh said sure ask him if he was available. Hugh said he thought of a sport coat he had been holding to see if it would fit John and if so, he would ask him if he could use it.

While Hugh and his son were waiting for John to arrive, Hugh gave his credit card to his son and told him to fill up John’s car with gasoline. He said that he told his son that he knew John always needed gasoline. John arrived to pick up Hugh’s son. After the usual greetings, as they were about to leave for the banquet, Hugh thought about the sport coat and asked his son to run up stairs to get it. His son came down with the sport coat and John tried it on. The coat fit him perfectly. John told Hugh that he had asked the LORD, “If it is possible he would like to have a sport coat for the banquet. But even if he did not get one, he was speaking at the banquet. He said not only does the coat fit me, “look it even matches my pants.” There is more.

They left for the banquet and returned in a few hours. Hugh asked his son how things went and if he filled John’s car with gasoline? His son said you would not believe it but a short distance from their home the car quit running. John said, “Well I must be out of gas.” The son said, “Here’s dad’s credit card. He asked me to fill your car with gas. So we filled the car with gas and made it to the banquet.” This is the type of special faith that is a gift from GOD. HE provides when the gifted person has a need. In our zeal to want to have this type of faith, Christians may be tempted to exercise that same type of faith without being gifted by GOD. The results can be disappointing and even discouraging but it also can be a learning experience.

Faith to step where there is no step is the special gift of faith I am referring to. GOD calls some and equips them with this special gift. GOD also will provide all our needs when HE calls us to ministry but we may have to work for it.

Do we have faith in something because we want it to be true or because it is true? Example, we want the salt in the salt shaker to be pepper. We can believe with all our heart and have absolute faith that GOD will turn the salt into pepper. Can GOD change salt into pepper? YES, but will HE because we want it to happen? It will happen only if it is part of HIS plan and purpose. I have heard many Christians say, “If my faith was stronger, then so-and-so would have happened.” It is your faith in GOD that counts and it still may not happen like you want it to happen. But when you have the relationship with GOD through CHRIST, even when the answer is no, you understand.

Often, we get impatient with GOD. GOD uses delay as an opportunity to complete a work in our life to better prepare us for ministry. The key is to wait upon HIM and respond when HE calls. So what do you do while waiting? Continue to focus on your relationship with HIM and begin to do what you have been led to do. If you need to raise support money, then be about raising support money. If it is to build a bridge, then start drawing up plans and gathering the materials.

When you are in relationship with CHRIST, then the better you can discern HIS voice and are willing to take action as HE leads you.

Let’s read 2 Corinthians 2:14-17; 3:4-5:

A Ministry of Life or Death

14 But thanks be to God, who always puts us on display[6] Or always leads us in a triumphal procession, or less likely, always causes us to triumph in Christ,[7] Lit in the Christ, or in the Messiah; see 1 Co 15:22; Eph 1:10,12,20; 3:11 and spreads through us in every place the scent of knowing Him. 15 For to God we are the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. 16 To some we are a scent of death leading to death, but to others, a scent of life leading to life. And who is competent for this? 17 For we are not like the many[8] Other mss read the rest who make a trade in God’s message [for profit]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. , but as those with sincerity, we speak in Christ, as from God and before God.

This was Paul’s fourth letter to the Corinthians. Two (2) letters have been lost. One person had led a crusade to discredit Paul. This person had spread the idea that Paul was in ministry only to make money. Paul gave us a clue in 2 Corinthians 2:1-11:

1 In fact, I made up my mind about this:[1] Lit I decided this for myself not to come to you on another painful visit.[2] Lit not again in sorrow to come to you 2 For if I cause you pain, then who will cheer me other than the one hurt?[3] Lit the one pained 3 I wrote this very thing so that when I came I wouldn’t have pain from those who ought to give me joy, because I am confident about all of you that my joy is yours.[4] Lit is of you all 4 For out of an extremely troubled and anguished heart I wrote to you with many tears—not that you should be hurt, but that you should know the abundant love I have for you.

A Sinner Forgiven

5 If anyone has caused pain, he has not caused pain to me, but in some degree—not to exaggerate—to all of you. 6 The punishment by the majority is sufficient for such a person, 7 so now you should forgive and comfort him instead; otherwise, this one may be overwhelmed by excessive grief. 8 Therefore I urge you to confirm your love to him. 9 It was for this purpose I wrote: so I may know your proven character, if you are obedient in everything. 10 Now to whom you forgive anything, I do too. For what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, it is for you in the presence of Christ, 11 so that we may not be taken advantage of by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his intentions.[5] Or thoughts

Back to our scripture - Paul referred to fragrance. He used an example of victors leading their captives down a street in a victory parade. When those who had gone to battle returned home victorious, the leaders would lead the victory parade. People would line the street to welcome them and would burn sweet smell incense in celebration of their victory. The incense was a sweet smelling to those rejoicing with the victors but the smell was death to those captured because at the end of the parade, those conquered could be killed.

Paul used this illustration as an example for Christians. CHRIST has conquered sin and death. CHRIST is the victor and was leading the victory parade. Christians who knew the truth were rejoicing in HIS victory. Christians who know the truth do not have to fear death or the consequences of sin. They can celebrate life in this life and the life to come. They are a sweet smelling fragrance to those who rejoice with them in the celebration of salvation but to those who reject CHRIST, they are the smell of death.

2 Corinthians 3:4-5:

Paul’s Competence

4 We have this kind of confidence toward God through Christ: 5 not that we are competent in[2] Lit from ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our competence is from God. 6 He has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit produces life.

Paul was saying neither he nor any one in his group were peddling a feel good message for a fee but the true message of salvation which was free to all who believe in CHRIST. The resurrection of CHRIST was proof that CHRIST had conquered sin and death and HIS resurrection confirmed it. HE gives the gift of eternal life to all who believe. Paul preaches the message of salvation by the grace and power of GOD and not in his power. Paul’s confidence and competence were in CHRIST and not in his abilities. Following the letter of the law was of no value because it is the Spirit WHO produces a new life in CHRIST for all who believe. Following the law will never lead a person to experience the miracle of rebirth.

Let’s read 2 Corinthians 3:18-4:2:

18 We all, with unveiled faces, are reflecting[5] Or are looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory;[6] Progressive glorification or sanctification this is from the Lord who is the Spirit.[7] Or from the Spirit of the Lord, or from the Lord, the Spirit

Paul used a statement from the Old Testament. When GOD was leading the Israelites to the Promised Land, Moses met with GOD on Mount Sinai. GOD was giving him specific instructions and commands. When Moses came down from meeting with GOD, his face would radiate a glow or brilliance. The first time this happened it frightened the Israelites. Once the Israelites confirmed that this radiating person was Moses, they came close to him. Moses gave them GOD’S commands and then he covered his face with a veil until he met with GOD again. When he met with GOD, he took the veil off. It was Moses who was encountering the presence of GOD. The Israelites were encountering GOD through Moses but since CHRIST gave HIS life to break the barrier of sin and conquer death, Christians can encounter and experience GOD directly through the life-changing power of CHRIST. Those who continue to cling to the law cannot experience GOD because the sin barrier remains for them because they do not accept what CHRIST did for them. CHRIST makes it possible for all Christians to come before GOD with unveiled faces. Christians do not have to come through an intermediary. Christians have direct access to GOD.

Christians are indwelled by the HOLY SPIRIT for the purpose of reflecting the glory of GOD to others. JESUS said it best that Christians are the light of the world. Christians are always in the presence of GOD because of the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT. Christians are being made into the image of CHRIST and should reflect the presence of GOD in their lives. Now, that is a challenge when you consider it from a human point-of-view. However, it is all about relationship. It is impossible for Christians to gin up their own glory but when they are in relationship with GOD through CHRIST, it comes naturally.

Christians are being transformed into the image of CHRIST by the power of the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT. The Greek word for “transformed” means metamorphosis. The Spiritual transformation is accomplished through the process of sanctification. The process begins at the moment of conversion or salvation and continues over a lifetime of walking with CHRIST.

The Light of the Gospel

1 Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we do not give up. 2 Instead, we have renounced shameful secret things, not • walking in deceit or distorting God’s message, but in God’s sight we commend ourselves to every person’s conscience by an open display of the truth.

The Corinthians had attacked Paul’s ministry because he had not come to Corinth. They had lost confidence in Paul. Paul was making it clear that his ministry was not coming from him but GOD had called him to ministry through HIS mercy. Without GOD’S mercy there would be no ministry. Because Christians have received mercy, they do not give up. As Christians, we know the truth and preach the truth. We have nothing to gain by distorting the truth. Let the truth of the gospel fall on the conscience of each hearer. The hearer has to make a decision whether or not to accept CHRIST as his/her SAVIOR. Conversion is GOD’S business. Our part is to obediently present the gospel.

Paul did not have to resort to deception or deceit to preach the truth. The Greek word for “deception” in essence means “the end justifies the means.” There were people who were trying to use the gospel to earn money and gather a following for the wrong reasons. But Paul used the scriptures to reveal truth. The Corinthian Christians could check the message he delivered against the scripture to confirm the truth. This was Paul’s message in context of this scripture.

There is another message in Paul’s message. Christians are sinners saved by grace. Many Christians have done shameful things and are not worthy in their own right to represent GOD’S glory. But through GOD’S redemptive power, all Christians are made righteous before HIM through the shed blood of CHRIST. Remember 2 Corinthians 5:21 -
21 He (GOD) made the One (JESUS) who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. This is hard for us to comprehend but it is truth.

Christians are all called to serve. GOD calls HIS children to be engineers, military, nurses, teachers, workers, garbage collectors, painters, laymen, laywomen, pastors, counselors, lawyers, special agents, AAA managers, business leaders, CEO’S, physical therapists, surgeons, doctors, stock brokers, government representatives, writers, artists, mothers, dads, care givers and the list goes on. So do not let your life before CHRIST cause you not to serve HIM. We are all sinners saved by grace. CHRIST shed blood cleanses Christians of all sin and makes them righteous before GOD.

Let’s read 2 Corinthians 4:5-6, 16-18:

Verses 5-6:

5 For we are not proclaiming ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves because of Jesus. 6 For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness”[2] Gn 1:3 —He has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of God’s glory in the face of Jesus Christ.

Christians have the light of CHRIST in them and they are to let that light shine through them to others. CHRIST said that Christians are to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth. Light is a beacon of hope. Light shows the way and can help others avoid danger. What does salt do? It preserves, makes a dish more savory, has many uses but it can also make you thirsty. As the salt of the earth, Christians are to make others thirst for what they have. Is this difficult? YES, unless you have the right relationship with CHRIST. It is a daily journey and a daily empowerment. We need to be refreshed with the living water daily.

Verses 16-18:

16 Therefore we do not give up; even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day. 17 For our momentary light affliction[4] See note at 2 Co 1:4 is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory. 18 So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen; for what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Paul acknowledges that we all get tired. Our bodies wear out but our inner person is restored by the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT WHO refreshes us through relationship. The burdens for the moment in this life are nothing compared to eternal life in heaven. So Christians are not to focus on the here and now but on the glory that lies ahead by obediently serving our LORD.

The right stuff is CHRIST in you and letting HIM help you build the right relationship with HIM. It does not happen overnight. It is an awesome journey. When you build a relationship with HIM you also learn of HIM and really get to know HIM, which is vital to obediently serving HIM.
