Wanted: Missionaries - Acts 13 and Galatians 2 - December 28, 2008

Sunday School Lesson - Wanted: Missionaries – December 28, 2008

This is our final lesson in our series “A Heart for Missions.”

Our scripture is Acts 13:1-3; 14:26-27; 26:15-19; Galatians 2:1-10.

My contention is that GOD calls all believers to be missionaries. However, GOD gives a special call to some believers to minister to certain areas or people groups. Some believers are called to support those who receive a special calling – provide funds, prayer support, encouragement, teach, wise counsel, help build organizations to train those being called and the list goes on and on.

In last week’s lesson the angel revealed to the shepherds the birth of the Messiah. They went, they saw, they believed and they told others. GOD’S plan is for each believer to tell others the Good News and Great Joy that the Messiah has come. HE lived upon earth as 100% human, was tempted in all ways like people are yet remained sinless. HE gave HIS life upon the cross by shedding HIS blood to die in the place of every sinner who will accept HIM and was buried. HE was raised from the dead by GOD HIS FATHER. HE walked upon earth for 40 days where over 500 people saw HIM, ascended into heaven and sat at the right hand of GOD. HE sent the HOLY SPIRIT to indwell and empower every believer. Believers build a relationship with GOD based upon their confidence and trust they have in HIM by yielding their lives and the control of their lives to HIM. This is through a process called sanctification. The degree that believers are willing to allow GOD to use them often determines what GOD calls them to do. In the Apostle Paul’s case GOD got his attention in a stark way but few believers have such a stark encounter with the living CHRIST.

A special calling to serve HIM in any capacity comes in many different ways. Believers have thoughts about a direction GOD wants for their lives and then these thoughts grow as they study GOD’S Word, pray. Other believers confirm it as they seek confirmation. GOD will direct your path. There is no set process because each believer has his or her own way of being convinced that GOD is calling him or her to serve HIM.

GOD issues the invitation or calling to serve HIM but it is our choice whether or not we respond. Some respond who have never been called and others who are called fail to respond. Some time people get caught up in an emotional moment and respond that GOD has called them to a certain mission. Later they discover that it was not a true calling. Some may feel guilty because they made a statement before the church but GOD forgives and wants them to move on in serving HIM.

When GOD calls, HE will provide. It will still likely be a tough journey but GOD will be your comforter, power, protector, provider and strength.

Let’s read Acts 26:15-19:

15 “But I said, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ “And the Lord replied: ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 16 But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and a witness of things you have seen,[2] Other mss read things in which you have seen Me and of things in which I will appear to you. 17 I will rescue you from the people and from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, 18 to open their eyes that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a share among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’ 19 “Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision.

This is the Apostle Paul’s testimony he gave to King Agrippa. It is vital that every believer prepare his or her testimony. A believer can use Paul’s testimony in Acts 26 as a guide for preparing his or her testimony. When a believer presents the gospel to others they can argue biblical facts but they cannot argue with a person’s testimony.

We have all heard dramatic testimonies and I have heard fellow believers say, “I wish I had been worse before I became a Christian, so I would have a dramatic testimony.” I can tell you some of the most powerful testimonies I have heard have been from believers who accepted CHRIST at an early age and grew and matured spiritually. Your testimony is your personal encounter with CHRIST. It is far better not to have the scars of sin in your life than to battle the evils of your past life in sin.

CHRIST told Paul that HE had called him for a specific purpose and HE would teach him and watch over him as he served HIM.

Let’s read Acts 13:1-3:

Preparing for the Mission Field

1 In the local church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger (NIGH guhr), Lucius (LYOO shuhs) the Cyrenian, Manaen (MAN uh en), a close friend of • Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 As they were ministering to[1] Or were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work that I have called them to.” 3 Then, after they had fasted, prayed, and laid hands on them,[2] See note at Ac 6:6 they sent them off.

The Christians in Antioch were going about their routine ministering and fasting. This could be indication that they were seeking what CHRIST wanted them to do. The HOLY SPIRIT instructed them to set apart Barnabas and Saul for a special work.

The church then joined them in their calling by fasting, praying and laying on hands. This was to show support for their calling. Barnabas and Saul (Paul) go but the others remained behind and supported them.

This is done today. Many churches send mission teams and have a special commissioning service before they leave on their mission trip. They ask for the church to pray for the team as they are in the mission field. Rather than a team it could be families or individuals who the LORD has called.

Some are called to go and some are called to stay but support those who are called.

Let’s read Acts 14:26-27:

26 From there they sailed back to Antioch where they had been entrusted to the grace of God for the work they had completed. 27 After they arrived and gathered the church together, they reported everything God had done with them, and that He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. 28 And they spent a considerable time[6] Or spent no little time with the disciples.

Barnabas and Paul accomplished the mission and returned to the church that commissioned them to go. They gave a report on everything GOD had done. It is vital that the missionaries tell what GOD did through them. Paul talked about the LORD opening the door. GOD is the ONE WHO opens the doors of opportunity. We need to seize the moment when HE opens the door.

I had an exciting experience today. I had written a check to give to a ministry in October but for various reasons I had not sent it to them. In last week’s lesson we discussed how we need to act when the HOLY SPIRIT prompts us. My wife and I were doing some final shopping. As I was preparing to go, the LORD prompted me to find the check and place it into my wallet. I reluctantly did so but murmuring “LORD you know I won’t see this person today.” The LORD said, "Take the check." I did. We made several stops and were making our final stop. I dropped my wife at the grocery while I went to a nearby drug store. I came back to the grocery and called my wife on my cell phone. I told her I was in the parking lot of the grocery and unless she needed me I would not come into the store. She said I need for you to come into the store. I entered the store and called her to find out where she was. She wasn’t far and I said she could meet me in the front of the store. I put my cell phone up and to my surprise, the person I thought impossible for me to encounter that day pushed his shopping cart right by me. He had two (2) of their five (5) children. I was shocked and pleased all at the same time. I spoke and immediately told him I had something for him, reached into my wallet and handed him the check. These folks are home missionaries and minister to some of the poor sections in Spartanburg. They also started a ministry among the Laotians in our area. He told me that he and his wife had decided not to take a salary this month because the giving had been poor. This family lives on a shoe string but the LORD meets their needs and the needs of the ministry. He said they were ministering to over 200 children and adults in their week night ministry and had over thirty (3) Laotians in that ministry.

I can tell you there was rejoicing in Bi-Lo, mainly by me because I had seen the LORD work through my obedience.

What a blessing I would have missed if I had concluded that there was no way I would see this person that day. GOD is awesome and HE will allow us to share HIS joy when we are obedient. The ministry was in need. The LORD provided. I was poor in spirit but the LORD made me rich in spirit because a need was met though me.

Missions are all around us. When the LORD prompts, respond.

Let’s read Galatians 2:1-10:

1 Then after 14 years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along also. 2 I went up because of a revelation and presented to them the gospel I preach among the Gentiles—but privately to those recognized [as leaders]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. —so that I might not be running, or have run, in vain. 3 But not even Titus who was with me, though he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. 4 [This issue arose]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. because of false brothers smuggled in, who came in secretly to spy on our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, in order to enslave us. 5 But we did not yield in submission to these people for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel would remain for you.

6 But from those recognized as important (what they really were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism[1] Or God is not a respecter of persons; lit God does not receive the face of man )—those recognized as important added nothing to me. 7 On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel for the uncircumcised, just as Peter was for the circumcised. 8 For He who was at work with Peter in the apostleship to the circumcised was also at work with me among the Gentiles. 9 When James, • Cephas, and John, recognized as pillars, acknowledged the grace that had been given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to me and Barnabas, [agreeing]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. 10 [They asked]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. only that we would remember the poor, which I made every effort to do.

This was not Paul’s first visit to Jerusalem. It is interesting that Paul took two (2) colleagues with him and Paul presented to the leaders the gospel he had been preaching. One main point was his preaching regarding circumcision. Paul did not think it was necessary for a Gentile to be circumcised as part of becoming a Christian. The leaders in Jerusalem agreed. The point being a house divided cannot stand. Paul was led to confirm with leadership what he believed to be true. Agreement produces unity and when in one accord the group can advance in harmony, realizing that there will be some acceptable differences. But they all serve the same SAVIOR and LORD.

In the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians he said GOD does not look upon the status of people. GOD does not show favoritism because of earthly stature, position, wealthy, pedigree, high estate or low estate and neither should we. All people are precious to GOD and all deserve the opportunity to be presented the Good News.

It is important that missionaries work together. In our scripture, Apostles Peter and Paul agreed on the people groups the LORD had called them to minister to – Peter to the circumcised or the Jews and Paul to the non-circumcised or the Gentiles. This did not mean there were strict boundaries because each Apostle also ministered to all people groups.

I know it can be a problem when local Christians are working in their homeland and have Christians come from other countries and begin ministering. Often the visiting missionaries are better equipped and have the financial backing of those sending them. In fact, I believe, in some areas ministry would be better served if those willing to send missionaries would provide funding to build the local base using those already in ministry or are preparing for ministry. It would be more efficient and effective to build from within that country.

When Christian missionaries come from another country to a country that has established a church network for that same denomination, they must communicate with the local ministers and Christian training facilities. In fact even reaching across to other denominations that preach the gospel is good. Christian groups must communicate with each other. I have witnessed such a situation and communicating has moved mountains.

When such territorial issues raise their heads, it shows the hearts of those involved. GOD wants missionaries to grow beyond jealousies that the flesh raises and work harmony and unity with their fellow laborers for the LORD.

The Message of Missions - Luke 2:8-12, 16-18, 25-32 - December 21, 2008

Sunday School Lesson – The Message of Missions – December 21, 2008

This is our third lesson in our series entitled “A Heart for Missions.”

Our scripture is Luke 2:8-12, 16-18, 25-32.

But before I get into the lesson I want to share with you that on this day fifty (50) years ago I married the most wonderful woman on earth. What a joy it has been to journey with her through all these years which seem like only yesterday - Four (4) children and so far nine (9) grandchildren. What unspeakable joy and what a mystery that she put up with me for all these years. But I know her secret. It is the love of GOD in her. She has agape love that can only come from CHRIST in her. It is because of her unfailing love for me that I have the opportunity to serve the LORD. She is truly a wonderful mother, grandmother, wife, helpmate and my best friend who I love dearly.

Our theme for this month is missions. We studied last week that the word “Go” in the Great Commission means as you go, minister. When GOD calls believers to share the Good News, HE intends for them to be open to the needs of people all around them as they are preparing to go or on their way to the place GOD has called them. Believers are called to be alert to opportunities all around as they live their daily lives and encounter others, both believers and non-believers. All people have needs and if we have something that will help someone else, a kind word, a smile, a loving hug, a word of encouragement, the Good News, empathy, a listening ear, wise counsel and the list goes on and on, GOD will use us, if we allow HIM.

The LORD laid upon my heart that HIS message to us, as believers, is to respond when we are prompted by HIM. Opportunity often comes in a split second or time specific. We will see in our scripture that GOD allowed circumstances to bring Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem because the Old Testament scriptures foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.

Were Mary and Joseph aware of this prophesy? Likely not. GOD knew it and this fact was vital to fulfill GOD’S Word regarding the Messiah. Therefore, Mary and Joseph were at the right place at the right time. Sometimes GOD places us in the right place at the right time. It is only in retrospect that we realize that GOD’S hand was directing our lives.

The shepherds had a choice whether or not to respond to the message delivered by the angel. Simeon was prompted to go to the temple to see the Messiah that he had been looking for most of his life. Simeon had a choice. At that moment Simeon may have questioned the prompting to go to the temple that day. Was it a prompting from GOD or just a notion? Simeon made the decision to go to the temple.

When GOD prompts us, will we respond? If the shepherds or Simeon, who we will study today, had not responded, they would have missed a wondrous blessing.

Let’s read Luke 2:8-12:

The Shepherds and the Angels

8 In the same region, shepherds were staying out in the fields and keeping watch at night over their flock. 9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before[5] Or Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.[6] Lit they feared a great fear 10 But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: 11 today a Savior, who is • Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David. 12 This will be the sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a feeding trough.”

The setting is Bethlehem. Bethlehem was the birthplace of King David. It was called the city of David but the name Bethlehem means “House of Bread.” Bethlehem is just a few miles from Jerusalem and was the place where the sheep used for sacrifice were kept. We find in the Old Testament, Micah 5:2:

2 [2] Mc 5:1 in Hb Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are small among the clans of Judah; One will come from you to be ruler over Israel for Me.[3] 2 Ch 7:18; Isa 11:1; Mt 2:6 His origin[4] Lit His going out is from antiquity, from eternity.[5]
Or from ancient times

1 Samuel 17:12:

12 Now David was the son of the Ephrathite from Bethlehem of Judah named Jesse. Jesse had eight sons, and during Saul’s reign was [already]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. an old man.

GOD’S plans are carried out in detail. GOD orchestrated the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem. This was a journey of about seventy (70) miles. Mary and Joseph both were descendants of David and both had to go to Bethlehem to register for tax purposes. Little did they know it was all part of GOD’S plan to fulfill the scriptures. They had no choice but to go.

There are times GOD places believers in the right spot at the right time to be part of HIS plans.

You would think, since it was part of GOD’S plan, HE would have made reservations for Mary and Joseph at the nicest Inn in Bethlehem. GOD could have but HE wanted HIS SON to be born under humble circumstances, so that every person would feel free to approach HIM. JESUS was not born as an earthly king or in a king’s palace.
But JESUS was born in a stable, wrapped in common cloth and laid in a feeding trough.

The shepherds were staying in the field. This indicates that the shepherds took turns caring for and guarding the sheep. They were tending sheep which were likely to be used for sacrifice in the temple in Jerusalem. It is fitting that those caring for the sheep intended for sacrifice would also be the first to receive the message that the Messiah had been born. The Messiah would be the perfect sacrifice for the sins of mankind. Therefore, when HE gave HIS life, to pay for the sins of mankind, it terminated the need to sacrifice sheep. Of course, that would mean those in the sheep business would have to raise or tend sheep for a different purpose. I can hear those who were raising sheep for sacrifice lobbying for the practice not to end - “Even if you become a Christian be sure to sacrifice a sheep because you never know.” Sometimes our livelihood can shape our beliefs.

The shepherds were doing what shepherds do when all of a sudden an angel appeared to them with a message. First, the angel has to put them at ease. Having an angel appear to a person usually meant GOD’S judgment was about to come down upon them. So the angel tells them not to be afraid. Then the angel gives them the message.

Shepherds were the least likely group of people for GOD to have the angel to announce the birth of HIS SON. Shepherds were looked upon as thieves and were social outcasts. But GOD chose shepherds over other people groups to show that JESUS was for all people from the social outcasts to royalty.

GOD is no respecter of where a person comes from but where he or she can go, if he or she gives his or her life to HIM.

The angel told the shepherds how they could identify this special baby.

It is likely that other babies were born that night but finding a new born in a stable, lying in a feeding trough was special and helped to narrow the search.

The shepherds had a choice. They could have thought they had been sleep deprived and dreamed that an angel spoke to them or it was that bad mutton Levi had cooked for dinner or bad wine in those dried out wine skins. However, they chose to go and in doing so confirmed what the angel had told them. What a joy when you see that you have had an encounter with GOD.

This is a message to believers and non-believers today. When GOD prompts us, how do we respond? I can hear some say, “Well if GOD sent an angel, I would do what the angel told me!” That is good. GOD works within the hearts and minds of people today by urging them to be obedient to HIM. For non-believers, HE is urging them to accept CHRIST as their SAVIOR. HE is urging believers to get to know HIM through a deeper relationship, to be obedient to HIM and serve HIM.

There is nothing wrong with checking out what GOD reveals to us. The shepherds went to see if what they had been told was accurate. Once confirmed they were excited and told others of their encounter. GOD wants us to tells others when we encounter HIM and HE reveals truth.

Let’s read Luke 2:16-18:

16 They hurried off and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby who was lying in the feeding trough. 17 After seeing [them]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. , they reported the message they were told about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary was treasuring up all these things[10] Lit these words in her heart and meditating on them. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had seen and heard, just as they had been told.

The shepherds did not waste any time. They hurried off and confirmed what they had been told. After they confirmed the facts, they went about the area telling others of their experience. All who heard what the shepherds saw were amazed.
The word “amazed” carries more than the idea of experiencing an emotional moment when they heard this exciting story but it has a deeper meaning. It means they pondered or took what was said deep into their hearts and minds to think about what they had been told.

Likely the people had heard the coming of the Messiah discussed at the local synagogue or temple. When the people heard the message, how did they respond? They were “amazed” but being “amazed” does not equal faith. Being “amazed” can lead to faith. Did they go and see this new born and recognize HIM as the Messiah? We do not know. They had the opportunity to go.

When GOD places a message of truth in our hearts and minds, do we respond? Do we confirm it by responding and checking it with the truth in the scriptures? Again, there is nothing wrong with confirming the truth. But actively seek the truth and once the message is confirmed, then respond as GOD leads you.

The shepherds returned to their work and reported to their fellow shepherds that they had confirmed what they had seen and heard. Were these shepherds the first evangelists? Did their shepherd friends accept this new born as the Messiah? Did the shepherds who went relieve the shepherds that stayed to let them go see this special new born? We do not know.

Did those around Bethlehem who heard what the shepherds said go to see this new born? If so, what did they expect to see?

We have to be careful about the assumptions we make when we hear messages about people having extraordinary experiences or encounters. Did some go to visit the new born and expect HIM to glow in the dark? Instead they may have found a normal looking baby wrapped in common cloth, in a stinky stable and crying because HE needed a diaper change. They may have concluded this baby was a normal baby therefore nothing special. Our notions can keep us from experiencing GOD and building an intimate loving relationship with HIM. Again, there is nothing wrong with questioning or having notions as long as we seek the truth to confirm or deny them through the study of HIS WORD and prayer.

A careful study of the scripture, available at that time by the religious leaders, would have confirmed that this baby had all the potential to be the promised Messiah. Preconceived notions or prejudice can rob us of truth.

Let’s read Luke 2:25-35:

Simeon’s Prophetic Praise

25 There was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, looking forward to Israel’s consolation,[16] The coming of the Messiah with His salvation for the nation; Lk 2:26,30; Isaiah 40:1; 61:2 and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he saw the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Guided by the Spirit, he entered[17] Lit And in the Spirit, he came into the the • temple complex. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform for Him what was customary under the law, 28 Simeon took Him up in his arms, praised God, and said: 29 Now, Master, You can dismiss Your • slave in peace, according to Your word. 30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation. 31 You have prepared [it]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. in the presence of all peoples— 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles[18] Or the nations [19] Isaiah 42:6; 49:6,9 and glory to Your people Israel.[20] Isaiah 46:13 LXX 33 His father and mother[21] Other mss read But Joseph and His mother were amazed at what was being said about Him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and told His mother Mary: “Indeed, this child is destined to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be opposed[22] Or spoken against — 35 and a sword will pierce your own soul—that the thoughts[23] Or schemes of many hearts may be revealed.”

Luke 2:25-35 is a fast forward from the birth of JESUS to forty (40) days after HIS birth. But first let’s consider what had already happened.

JESUS was circumcised on the eighth day as GOD had directed Abraham about 2,000 years earlier for male babies.

Joseph and Mary went back to the temple forty (40) days after the birth of JESUS. Verses 21-24 in Luke 2 fill in some details which lead into our scripture:

21 When the eight days were completed for His circumcision, He was named JESUS—the name given by the angel before He was conceived.[11] Or conceived in the womb 22 And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were finished, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord 23 (just as it is written in the law of the Lord: Every firstborn male[12] Lit “Every male that opens a womb will be dedicated[13] Lit be called holy to the Lord[14] Ex 13:2,12 ) 24 and to offer a sacrifice (according to what is stated in the law of the Lord: a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons[15] Lv 5:11; 12:8 ).

In Exodus 13:1-2 GOD required that the firstborn male be presented to HIM:

1 The Lord spoke to Moses: 2 “Consecrate every firstborn male to Me, the firstborn from every womb among the Israelites, both man and animal; it is Mine.”[1] Lk 2:23

Later, GOD chose the tribe of Levi as HIS special servants. The parents of the firstborn male could redeem him from service to the GOD by paying five shekels.

There is no evidence that Mary and Joseph paid the five shekel ransom to redeem JESUS, therefore, it is concluded that JESUS was dedicated to GOD to serve HIM. Of course, JESUS came to earth to be obedient to GOD, HIS FATHER. The fact that Mary and Joseph did not pay the five shekels to redeem HIM revealed their heart.

The focus of our scripture is on Simeon. Simeon was a devout man and apparently up in age. He had been looking for and praying for the coming of the Messiah. On this special day the LORD prompted Simeon to go to the temple.

Again, Simeon had a choice. Had he gone to the temple other times to no avail? We do not know. But the day and the moment Mary and Joseph brought JESUS to the temple was the day the HOLY SPIRIT prompted Simeon to go to the temple. Timing is critical. Simeon was obedient and responded when prompted.

That is the key point. Opportunity usually opens up within a short time frame. If Simeon had procrastinated, he would have missed the moment he had been looking for, praying for and anticipating for years. He didn’t procrastinate and was rewarded for his faithfulness. GOD had confirmed in his heart that he would not see death until he saw the LORD’S Messiah.

How did Mary and Joseph respond to Simeon? Today, if an old man took our firstborn and went on about our baby, we would likely think he was off his rocker. But Mary and Joseph took in differently. They had already witnessed a number of confirmations that their baby was special. The scripture used the word “amazed.” This means they took what was happening into their hearts and pondered the moment. It was another confirmation that JESUS was truly GOD’S SON.

Simeon passed a word of prophesy onto Mary and she hid these things in her heart.

Is JESUS real to you? When JESUS is real to you, as a believer, then you can share HIM with others. Seek to know HIM and learn from HIM.

Your Missions Involvement - Matthew 9:35-38; 28:18-20 and Romans 15:23-28 - December 14, 2008

Sunday School Lesson - Your Missions Involvement – December 14. 2008

This is lesson two (2) in our Bible study entitled “A Heart for Missions.”

Our scripture is Matthew 9:35-38; 28:18-20 and Romans 15:23-28.

We begin with scriptures of JESUS telling HIS disciples to pray for workers, followed with the Great Commission and then the Apostle Paul carrying out the Great Commission.

GOD calls all believers to missions. The word “Go” used in the Great Commission means as a believer goes. All believers go somewhere every day. Some believers are to provide funds for others to go fulfill a special calling, some are to go, some are to teach and prepare others to go and the list goes on. The opportunity for missions, which is reaching out to others for CHRIST, is always present – at the grocery, service station, doctors office, friends, neighbors, barber shop, hair salon, restaurant, flying, soup kitchen, church, socials, golf clubs, traveling, on a cruise and this list goes on and on. You may never know the impact your witness has made upon someone who may have been observing you as you reflected the love of GOD in your life. You may have spoken an encouraging word to that person or to someone else and you reflected CHRIST causing that person to want what you have. You could witness to someone and he or she prayed to receive CHRIST as his or her SAVIOR.

The important thing is for all believers to know that they are GOD’S visible representation of HIS love, care and provision. You may think this is scary. It is, because we are GOD’S representative 24/7 and without the presence and power of the HOLY SPIRIT dwelling within us, it is impossible.

Our study begins with CHRIST preaching, healing the people and training HIS disciples. Activity is important but so is prayer.

Let’s read Matthew 9:35-38:

The Lord of the Harvest

35 Then Jesus went to all the towns and villages, teaching in their • synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every[17] Or every kind of disease and every sickness.[18] Other mss add among the people 36 When He saw the crowds, He felt compassion for them, because they were weary and worn out, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”

JESUS was preaching the Good News in towns, villages and in the synagogues the Good News. HE presented the message and HE confirmed the message by healing those with diseases and sickness.

It is important to observe those you are ministering to. JESUS observed those HE was speaking to were weary and worn down. HE had compassion for them because they were spiritually lost although there were religious leaders all around them. When people have no hope and feel helpless to do anything about their circumstances, they are in are truly weary. JESUS offered them hope. HE offered hope that was real because HE confirmed what HE said with evidence of HIS power and authority.

Sometimes religious leaders conclude that some people are not worthy of them spending their time to reach out to them. JESUS considered every person important and worthy to be exposed to the Good News. Once a person is exposed to the Good News, GOD works within his or her heart to bring salvation. GOD is the LORD of the harvest. Our job, as GOD’S representative, is to present what GOD lays upon our heart to do, say or present to others. It is HIS job to work in their hearts to bring about salvation. Last week we discussed the power of the Word of GOD and GOD’S power to work in a person’s heart to present him or her with the opportunity to receive salvation.

JESUS had compassion for those seeking the truth and HE told the disciples to pray to the LORD of harvest to send out workers into HIS harvest.

GOD’S plan is for believers to be HIS representatives to those lost in sin and spiritual darkness. It is a partnership between a believer and GOD. When a believer desires to serve GOD through CHRIST, GOD will direct him or her to those who are to receive salvation. GOD knows the hearts of every person on the face of the earth. HE knows those who are ready to receive salvation, thus the harvest is getting ripe. Any farmer or person who gardens knows when the harvest is nearing ripe and he or she knows that harvest time can be critical or else the fruit may spoil or rot. That sends chills over me to think that I missed an opportunity to reach out to someone who was ripe for harvest. I cannot decide whether or not a person is ripe for harvest but GOD can and that is why we must rely upon HIM to direct us.

I remember the first time I witnessed to a man. I was scared. I gave him my testimony. The man turned and looked at me and said, “You know what, I have been thinking about things like that recently.” WOW! I did not know that but GOD did. The man did not pray to receive CHRIST but I told him how to receive CHRIST when he was ready. Did he? Only eternity will reveal it because I have never seen the man again. This was over thirty-five (35) years ago.

I can tell you it is exciting for GOD to shoot you like an arrow to a person who is ready to receive the word of GOD. Present what GOD lays upon your heart and leave the results to HIM. HE may direct you to become more involved in someone’s life or direct you to guide him or her to someone else who can help him or her grow spiritually. HE may have others lined up to build upon the seed you plant in his or her heart. GOD’S desire is for no one to go to Hell but for all to accept CHRIST as his or her SAVIOR.

Let’s read Matthew 28:16-20:

The Great Commission

16 The 11 disciples traveled to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped,[5] Other mss add Him but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of[6] Lit and instruct, or and disciple (as a verb) all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember,[7] Lit look I am with you always,[8] Lit all the days to the end of the age.”

After the death and resurrection of CHRIST, CHRIST remained upon earth for forty (40) days teaching HIS disciples and meeting other people. Then HE ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of the FATHER. The FATHER gave all power and authority to CHRIST.

Acts 1:3:

3 After He had suffered (Been crucified), He also presented Himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during 40 days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

During these forty (40) days, JESUS appeared to over 500 people. The Apostle Paul recorded this fact in 1 Corinthians 15:3-8:

3 For I (Paul) passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He appeared to • Cephas, then to the Twelve. 6 Then He appeared to over 500 brothers at one time, most of whom remain to the present, but some have fallen • asleep.[3] Jn 11:11; Ac 7:60; 1 Th 4:13–15 7 Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one abnormally born, He also appeared to me.

Some of HIS disciples doubted that it was really HIM. HE spent time to confirm that HE had really been raised from the dead. We have to keep in mind that HE had HIS glorified body which was completely under HIS control. HE could eat or not eat. HE could choose to be recognized or not. HE could either walk through a door without opening it or open the door and then walk through it. This mystified the disciples. This is the type of body believers will have after the second coming of CHRIST.

JESUS told HIS disciples to go and make disciples. This message is for believers today. As mentioned earlier all believers are called to spread the gospel but some have a special calling to be preachers, evangelists, teachers, deacons, etc.

The word “Go” means as you “Go” carry out the Great Commission. Whether a believer is doing his or her daily routine, going to a mission field or serving in a mission field, he or she is to be ready to present the Good News. There are weary souls all around us who are seeking truth. Believers have that truth and CHRIST intends for them to share it and reach out to others as directs.

GOD has given all authority to CHRIST and with that authority HE commissions every believer to “Go”. HIS instructions are to go to all nations. The word used for “nations” is not other countries but go to other people groups, to other races, to other ethnic groups, cultures and language groups. It is clear that CHRIST tells believers to not restrict where they are to go and to whom they are to present the Good News.

I know here in Spartanburg, SC we have Hispanics, Russians, Orientals, Ukrainians, Laotians, Germans and the list goes on. We have various groups coming to us. Our church has a program to teach English as a second language. Shepherds Door has a ministry to a variety of various groups. Churches send mission teams too many different countries and areas within the United States.

I was flying back from Poland and sat next to a man who was planning for a team of young people to come from the Netherlands to go to New York City to spread the Good News. CHRIST admonished HIS disciples to pray for workers to be sent to the field for the harvest. GOD calls believers from where ever they are willing to come. If there are not enough responding from America, HE calls them from the Netherlands. GOD’S work will go forward. Are you are open to receive the call?

CHRIST said to baptize and to teach them. These are actions. To baptize is a public act to confirm outwardly what a believer has done inwardly. It represents that the new believer has died to his or her old life and been resurrected to walk in partnership with CHRIST. Then we are to teach others what GOD has taught and revealed to us, as believers through the study of HIS Word and the HOLY SPIRIT.

Let’s read Romans 15:23-28:

Paul’s Travel Plans

22 That is why I have been prevented many times from coming to you. 23 But now I no longer have any work to do in these provinces,[10] Lit now, having no longer a place in these parts and I have strongly desired for many years to come to you 24 whenever I travel to Spain.[11] Other mss add I will come to you. For I do hope to see you when I pass through, and to be sent on my way there by you, once I have first enjoyed your company for a while. 25 Now, however, I am traveling to Jerusalem to serve the saints; 26 for Macedonia and Achaia[12] The churches of these provinces were pleased to make a contribution to the poor among the saints in Jerusalem. 27 Yes, they were pleased, and they are indebted to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual benefits, then they are obligated to minister to Jews[13] Lit to them in material needs. 28 So when I have finished this and safely delivered the funds[14] Lit delivered this fruit to them, I will go by way of you to Spain.

This scripture gives us an example of the application of the Great Commission. The Apostle Paul had a special calling to present the gospel to the Gentiles. He wanted to present the gospel to those who had not had the opportunity to hear it. Paul taught the new converts and helped them to grow spiritually. Then he expected them to continue the evangelism and missionary efforts after he moved on to another area.

Paul knew the Christians in Rome were on a firm Christian foundation therefore, he had not visited them when he wrote his letter to them. But he had plans to visit them en-route to Spain. HE had to first go to Jerusalem to deliver the funds the Gentile Christians had collected to help the poor Christians in Jerusalem. There was a famine in Jerusalem and the Jewish Christians were in need of support. The Gentile Christians in Macedonia (MASS uh DOH nih uh) and Achaia (uh KAY yuh) believed that since the Jewish Christians had shared the gospel with them, they wanted to share their resources with them.

This is the heart of missions. There are those in need and GOD has blessed others with the means to meet those needs. We are to go and make disciples. Our objective in missions is for them to eventually be self-sufficient.

God's Missionary Heart - Isaiah 49:1-6; 56:3-8; 66:18-20, 23 - December 7, 2008

Sunday School Lesson – God’s Missionary Heart – December 7, 2008

We begin a new series of study entitled “A Heart for Missions.”

Our scripture for the month will be selected verses from Isaiah, Matthew, Luke and Acts.

Our scripture today is selected verses from Isaiah 49:1-6; 56:3-8; 66:18-20, 23.

GOD’S mission is for all people in the world to know about HIM and ultimately to know HIM. To accomplish this, GOD chose a nation that would be HIS people. That visible nation was Israel. The chosen vessel to establish that nation was Abraham. GOD worked through Abraham and generations to come to establish HIS people and ultimately, the earthly linage of HIS ONLY SON JESUS. JESUS’ mother was a virgin who came from the linage of King David. HIS FATHER was GOD though the power of the HOLY SPIRIT. JESUS was 100% human and 100% divine. GOD’S desire and mission is to seek and save those who are lost in sin and darkness. GOD is the light of the world which was culminated and revealed in HIS SON JESUS.

GOD used the nation of Israel to be the visible representation of HIS presence, care and power. Since the birth, life, death, resurrection and ascension of CHRIST GOD has used believers and the living body of believers, who is the church, to be visible representations of HIS presence, care and power. This is manifested through the presence of the HOLY SPIRIT indwelling every believer.

For the last two (2) months we have studied Christian fundamentals in the book of Romans. It is imperative that we keep the fundamentals in mind as we study this lesson. This lesson may open areas which may be uncomfortable to some.

Our lesson focuses on the fact that GOD desires for the message of salvation to be presented to all people and people groups. The key is once a person receives the message will he or she respond to the pure message by accepting CHRIST as his or her SAVIOR? Living the victorious Christian life means turning from his or her wicked ways and allowing the HOLY SPIRIT to build into his or her life the essential spiritual fundamentals GOD requires. This means yielding his or her will to the FATHER, through JESUS and being empowered by the HOLY SPIRIT. It is easy to say but the flesh will fight hard to remain the ruler of your flesh kingdom. That is why believers must die to self and allow CHRIST to rule their hearts and minds. It is a process called sanctification.

Let’s read Isaiah 49:1-6:

1 Coastlands,[1] Or Islands listen to me; distant peoples, pay attention. The Lord called me before I was born. He named me while I was in my mother’s womb. 2 He made my words like a sharp sword; He hid me in the shadow of His hand. He made me like a sharpened arrow; He hid me in His quiver. 3 He said to me, “You are My servant, Israel; I will be glorified in him.” 4 But I myself said: I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and futility; yet my vindication is with the Lord, and my reward is with my God. 5 And now, says the Lord, who formed me from the womb to be His servant, to bring Jacob back to Him so that Israel might be gathered to Him; for I am honored in the sight of the Lord, and my God is my strength— 6 He says, “It is not enough for you to be My servant raising up the tribes of Jacob and restoring the protected ones of Israel. I will also make you a light for the nations,[2] Lk 2:32; Ac 13:47 to be My salvation to the ends of the earth.”

There are four (4) “Servant Songs” in the Book of Isaiah. They are called servant songs because the word “servant” refers to an individual such as the Prophet Isaiah, King David, the nation of Israel or to the Messiah. In light of the life of CHRIST, as reflected in the New Testament, New Testament writers saw that in some instances “servant” referred to JESUS.

The scripture we are studying today is the second of the four (4) servant songs. The other servant songs are Isaiah 42:1-7; 50:4-11; 52:13-53:12. The New Testament connects the dots regarding these servant songs to CHRIST, thus they are prophecies regarding CHRIST and HIS mission upon earth.

We may ask, “Why is this so obscure in the Old Testament?”

GOD had a plan and this plan would be revealed according to HIS timetable. We had this scripture in last week’s lesson:

1 Corinthians 2:7-8:

7 On the contrary, we speak God’s hidden wisdom in a • mystery, which God predestined before the ages for our glory. 8 None of the rulers of this age knew it, for if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.[3] Ps 24:7

GOD revealed HIS plan at just the right time and opened the eyes of those who seek HIM. HE still does this today.

Isaiah 52:15 refers to CHRIST. CHRIST will fulfill the scriptures and open the eyes of the spiritually blind.

15 so He will sprinkle[11] As the blood of a sacrifice is sprinkled on the altar on behalf of the people [12] Heb 10:22; 12:24 many nations.[13] LXX reads so many nations will marvel at Him Kings will shut their mouths because of Him, For they will see what had not been told them, and they will understand what they had not heard.[14] Rm 15:21

In our scripture the servant CHRIST, the Messiah, is speaking. Verse 2 tells us that HIS Words are sharp and cut to the heart. Hebrews 4:12 tells us - 12 For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as to divide soul, spirit, joints, and marrow; it is a judge of the ideas and thoughts of the heart.

When GOD calls believers to present the Word of GOD, it is the Word of GOD that has the power to cut through to the very eyes of a person’s heart. It is in the eyes of the person’s heart where he or she encounters GOD and makes the decision to either accept HIM or reject HIM. Our part is to present the Gospel. It is HIS Word that brings a person to the point of salvation.

The use of the words “coastlands” and “distant people” reflects the heart of GOD for other people, the non-Jews or Gentiles. HIS desire is for all people to hear the Good News of salvation. This fact is captured in the second part of verse 6, “I will also make you a light for all nations” is a focus on the non-Jews or Gentiles. In the King James Version it reads, “I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles.”

GOD called CHRIST and watched over HIM as HE was in HIS mother’s womb. CHRIST was hidden in the shadow of the FATHER until the right moment came. CHRIST was especially equipped to deliver the message GOD had planned from the beginning of time. Even though equipped, HE knew disappointment and frustration, because of unbelief. Yet, even through the disappointments and frustration, HE trusted in the FATHER. Verse 6 is the Great Commission for the Jews before CHRIST to carry the light and message of the FATHER to all people of the earth (Gentiles).

The Jews found it very difficult to reach out to other nations. GOD intended that HIS love, care and provision to be spread to all people before CHRIST came into the world and after CHRIST. GOD’S message of salvation is for all people.

What does this mean for believers today?

We know in Ephesians 1:4 4 for He chose[3] Rm 11:5–7; 1 Co 1:26–31; 1 Th 1:4; 2 Th 2:13; 1 Pt 1:1–2 us in Him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in His sight.[4] Vv. 3–14 are 1 sentence in Gk. In love[5]

Just as GOD called HIS SON JESUS, GOD calls us to serve HIM.

In verses 1-6, GOD revealed, through the Prophet Isaiah, HIS plan to redeem mankind. GOD’S plan involved HIS SON JESUS and then it involves all who accept JESUS as their Savior to tell others the Good News. GOD’S plan of salvation is for all people – the very wicked, drunks, sexual perverts, prostitutes, homosexuals, drug addicts, those morally good, kind, generous, loving and the list goes as far as anyone wants to make it.

Are we reluctant to present the gospel to people we think unworthy?

It is not up to us to prejudge or judge others. Our responsibility is to present CHRIST as GOD leads us. GOD will be their judge. Our part is to present the Good News and be available to help those who accept HIM to get on a firm Spiritual foundation. We can help them directly or by getting them to a spiritual brother, sister, church or Christian organization that can help them. Then we leave the results to GOD. GOD knows their hearts. The convert must turn from his or her old lifestyle to serve GOD. This becomes clearer in our next scripture.

Let’s read Isaiah 56:3-8:

3 No foreigner who has converted to the Lord should say, “The Lord will exclude me from His people”; and the eunuch should not say, “Look, I am a dried–up tree.” 4 For the Lord says this: “For the eunuchs who keep My Sabbaths, and choose what pleases Me, and hold firmly to My covenant, 5 I will give them, in My house and within My walls, a memorial and a name better than sons and daughters. I will give each [of them]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. an everlasting name that will never be cut off. 6 And the foreigners who convert to the Lord, minister to Him, love the Lord’s name, and are His servants, all who keep the Sabbath without desecrating it, and who hold firmly to My covenant— 7 I will bring them to My holy mountain and let them rejoice in My house of prayer. Their • burnt offerings and sacrifices will be acceptable on My altar, for My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.”[1] Mk 11:17 8 [This is]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. the declaration of the Lord God, who gathers the dispersed of Israel: “I will gather to them still others besides those already gathered.”

Isaiah identified two (2) groups of people, foreigners or non-Jews and eunuchs. Both were considered outcasts, as far as the Jews were concerned. These people could not help it if they were not born a Jew or had been made a eunuch. GOD made it clear that HE did not and will not exclude them. GOD looks upon the heart of a person and whether or not he or she is obedient to HIS commands. Since CHRIST, it has been whether or not a person accepts HIS SON JESUS as SAVIOR and hopefully has also made HIM his or her LORD.

Accepting JESUS as our SAVIOR gets us, so-to-speak, fire insurance but making CHRIST the LORD of our lives gives us the joy, power and assurance of obediently serving HIM as HE directs our lives.

As we see in this scripture, GOD granted all believers all the rights and privileges as HIS children.

GOD established the standard of missions for all believers. GOD welcomes all people and we cannot do any less. I have to add my prejudice. A friend of mine and I were discussing certain groups of people, who we look down upon. Should we welcome them into our fellowship or church? I thought he had a good answer. He said yes but when we pray we need to keep one (1) eye open. We should reach out to all people but we do not need to park our brain.

Let’s read Isaiah 66: 18-20, 23:

18 “Knowing[10] LXX, Syr; MT omits Knowing their works and their thoughts, I have come to gather all nations and languages; they will come and see My glory. 19 I will establish a sign among them, and I will send survivors from them to the nations—to Tarshish (TAHR shish), Put, (PUHT)[11] LXX; MT reads Pul; Jr 46:9 Lud (LUHD) (who are archers), Tubal (TYOO buhl), Javan (JAY van), and the islands far away—who have not heard of My fame or seen My glory. And they will proclaim My glory among the nations.[12] Ps 96:3 20 They will bring all your brothers from all the nations as a gift to the Lord on horses and chariots, in litters, and on mules and camels, to My holy mountain Jerusalem, says the Lord, just as the Israelites bring an offering in a clean vessel to the house of the Lord.

23 All mankind will come to worship Me, from one New Moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another,” says the Lord.

This scripture is where the rubber hits the road. GOD had spoken through the Prophet Isaiah regarding how HE looked upon people and people groups other than the Jews. GOD welcomes all who accept HIM to come to the temple to worship and serve HIM. The words “see MY glory” in verse 18 means to come into HIS presence and worship HIM. All who come to HIM have the same rights, privileges and accountability.

There will be a great gathering of all people at the throne of GOD. This gathering is revealed by the Apostle John in Revelation 7:9:

9 After this I looked, and there was a vast multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language, which no one could number, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were robed in white with palm branches in their hands.

Those coming from a different heritage, lifestyle, background, etc. have all accepted GOD and turned from their former practices. Since CHRIST has come into the world, they have accepted GOD through CHRIST. When they do, GOD fully accepts them to serve HIM. GOD said through Isaiah that these people, though rejected by the Israelites, GOD accepted because their hearts had been changed by the power of HIS Word and now they were free to obediently serve HIM.

Many of us have deep seated prejudice and find it hard to believe that GOD could welcome some people who have done some very awful things or who come from a wicked lifestyle. We must keep in mind that GOD has changed their hearts and they have been washed in the blood of the lamb and are whiter than snow.

GOD accepts all who accept HIM and turn from their wicked ways.

GOD has set the standard for missions. Believers are to go and present the Gospel of CHRIST as GOD leads us. This may be as simple as giving a cup of cold water in HIS name or a word of encouragement to those who need it. Ask GOD to open your eyes to mission opportunities as you live each day.
