Bible Study - Priceless (5) - Equipped with GOD'S Gifts - 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 - January 3, 2016

Bible Study – Priceless (5) – Equipped with GOD’S Gifts – January 3, 2016

This is lesson five (5) in our series entitled “Priceless: Finding Your Value in GOD.”

Our focus scripture is 1 Corinthians 12:4-11.

GOD has uniquely gifted us to serve HIM.

If you get nothing else out of this lesson, focus on verse 11:

11 But one and the same Spirit is active in all these (Spiritual Gifts), distributing to each one as He wills.

IT IS GOD WHO GIVES SPIRITUAL GIFTS TO WHOM HE CHOOSES!

Christians can desire the “Gifts of the Spirit” as written in 1 Corinthians 12:31:

31 But desire the greater gifts. And I will show you an even better way.

When “Spiritual Gifts” are being manifested within the church it is easy for Christians to focus on the gifts that seem to be very popular such as “speaking in tongues” or “prophesying.” The purpose of “Spiritual Gifts” is to minister to the Spiritual body of CHRIST. This is not ministering to the brick and mortar church but to the true church of which CHRIST is the cornerstone, of which the brick and mortar church can benefit.

The intent of “Spiritual Gifts” is for Christians to be equipped by GOD to carry out certain needed and necessary functions within and outside the Spiritual body. We will get into more detail regarding the Spiritual body in our next lesson. Let’s focus on the Gifts.

There are over twenty gifts mentioned in the Bible. [Romans 12:6-8; Ephesians 4:11-12; teaching, administration, giving, making money, helps, cheering someone up and the list goes on] Each time they are mentioned it is clear that the list is open-ended. Keep in mind, “GOD gives to whom HE chooses.”

Let’s read 1 Corinthians 12:1-6:

1 About matters of the spirit: brothers, I do not want you to be unaware.
Paul was writing about “matters of the spirit.” His intent was to address the roll of the Christian as a whole person (body, soul and spirit) functioning within the Spiritual body of born-again believers.

In Ephesians, Chapter 6, Paul wrote about the spirit world. In the physical world in which we live, there is the spirit world superimposed around us. Both GOD and Satan are vying for our attention. Keep in mind that our earthly parents, Adam and Eve, chose to eat the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. With the knowledge of good and evil humans must choose between GOD and Satan – flesh or the Spirit, darkness or Light, Truth or error, sin and eternal death or forgiveness and eternal life.

We can tap into the evil spirit world overtly or accidentally – mediums, horoscopes, fortune tellers, witchcraft, tarot cards and the list goes on. A Christian cannot be possessed by an evil spirit or demon but a Christian can be oppressed by an evil or demon spirit. Satan can counterfeit gifts that appear to be from GOD. Those involved in pagan worship have opened themselves to the occult world and to demons and evil spirits. As the light of CHRIST shines into those delivered from this evil spirit world it exposes areas that must be redeemed via the process of sanctification. The indwelling Holy Spirit works in the lives of Christians by the renewing of their minds. Christians are to fill their minds with light and truth which comes from study of the Bible, scripture memorization, prayer and obedience.

2 You know how, when you were pagans, you were led to dumb idols-being led astray.

3 Therefore I am informing you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

4 Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit

5 There are different ministries, but the same Lord

6 And there are different activities, but the same God is active in everyone and everything.

Notice that Paul revealed there are gifts, ministries and activities manifested by GOD and gifted to Christians by GOD. Notice that Paul reveals that the Trinity of Spiritual activity comes under the authority of the Trinity – Spirit, LORD and GOD – thus manifesting them in unity and harmony according to the plans and purposes of GOD. Remember JESUS said “HE only said or did that which HIS Father told HIM to do or say.” That is true for Christians today but many are afraid of being led by the Holy Spirit. What would their friends say or think about him or her if they allowed the Holy Spirit to lead and guide him or her? Christians can squelch the manifestation of the Spirit because they want to be socially or politically correct.

Here is something to ponder:

Paul listed:

4 Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit
Paul tied “Gifts” to the “Holy Spirit.” Gifts come from the Greek word “charis” which means “grace” thus “charismatic” for those filled and led by the Holy Spirit.

5 There are different ministries, but the same Lord

Paul tied “different ministries” to the “Lord or CHRIST.” The Greek word for “ministries” is “diakonion” and means to “serve.” It is where we get our word “deacon.”

6 And there are different activities, but the same God is active in everyone and everything.

Paul tied “different activities” to “GOD, the activator.” The word “activities” is related to “working.” It is not busy work but working as led by GOD.
There is a heavenly hierarchy Who orchestrates the affairs of mankind upon earth.

GOD is in control of all things but in particular HE is in control of the broad and overarching activities or work needed to govern the world and direct history according to HIS plan and purpose.

JESUS commissioned Christians to go into the world. JESUS having lived as a human HE has intimate knowledge of what is required to establish ministries to serve and meet the physical and Spiritual needs of all peoples and to disciple and equip them to serve.

In turn, the indwelling Holy Spirit is the intimate and personal communicator with each individual Christian and the Triune GOD. Christians are equipped accordingly to function in the Kingdom of GOD here upon earth according to HIS plan and purpose.

Consider this hierarchy for accomplishing the will of GOD in the world where the knowledge of good and evil prevails.

GOD equips HIS children, Christians, to carry out HIS plans and purpose. As there is a diversity of ministries, there is, also, a diversity of “Spiritual Gifts” to accomplish a diversity of “activities.” But all are carried out in harmony and unity. Paul lists some of the “Gifts of the Spirit” in our next scripture.

Let’s read 1 Corinthians 12:7-10:

7 A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person to produce what is beneficial:

The purpose of “Spiritual Gifts” is to help others. A manifestation ties a Spiritual truth to a supernatural event. This application is within the Spiritual Body, as well as, outside the Spiritual body. Spiritual Gifts are to contribute to the Spiritual and ethical well-being of the true church and within the brick and mortar church.
Every Christian has at least one Spiritual Gift.  As mentioned earlier, Spiritual Gifts are distributed by GOD and manifested by GOD in and through the obedient life of the Christian.

Spiritual Gifts must not be measured by thinking or saying that one Gift is more or less important than another. Certain Gifts can be desired but when a Christian receives a Gift, it is GOD’S decision. GOD will not give you something that will harm you but to draw you closer to HIM.

Can Christians attempt to concoct a gift? Yes! The human physiology is creative but the fruit will determine the validity of the gift. Christians must trust GOD to give to whom HE chooses at the time the Gift is needed. There is a diversity of Gifts but there is also unity, order and harmony associated with the Gifts.

8 to one is given a message of wisdom through the Spirit, to another, a message of knowledge by the same Spirit,

Wisdom comes from GOD. Wisdom is knowledge applied to GOD’S plan. GOD knows the heart of every person and HE ministers to them by giving a message of wisdom or a message of knowledge to meet the needs of those who hear and act upon the delivered message be it “wisdom” or “knowledge.”

9 to another, faith by the same Spirit, to another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit,

Faith is a Gift. This could be puzzling. Faith is required for salvation, stepping out in ministry or living by faith are other steps of faith. Some Christians are called to live by faith and that is a Gift. Those not called to live by faith will find living by faith very difficult simply because they are living by flesh-faith or self-faith.

I recall a friend of mine, Hugh, told me that he wanted his son to spend time with a missionary friend, John. John lived by faith. John was home from the mission field on furlough and Hugh wanted his son and John to spend time together. John was scheduled to pick Hugh’s son up to attend a meeting where John was the main speaker. Hugh gave his son a credit card and told him to fill John’s car with gasoline because he knew John would likely need it.

John came and before going out the door to attend the meeting, Hugh said,” John, wait a minute. I have a sport coat upstairs if you want it and it fits you can have it. Hugh’s son ran upstairs and got the coat. John tried it on and it fit him perfectly. John replied “Look, it matches my pants.” John then told Hugh that he had asked the LORD to provide him a coat for his speaking engagement for that evening but whether or not he had a coat, he would speak. GOD provides.

When his son returned home that evening, Hugh asked him how the evening had gone. His son told him that they had not driven very far when John’s car began to stop. John said, “My car must be out of gas.” Hugh’s son said to John, “Oh, here is dad’s credit card and he told me to tell you to fill your car with gas.” They coasted into a gas station and filled up.

That is living by faith but it is a Gift from GOD and GOD provides. Such faith living is not something we decide to do on our own. Some may test GOD and determine that they are going to live on faith but what do you think will happen? GOD Gifts those whom HE chooses and HE provides. HE then provides for their needs.

Healing is a Gift and requires faith. James gives some specific instructions for praying for the sick as recorded in James 5:13-16:

13 Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praises.

14 Is anyone among you sick? He should call for the elders of the church, and they should pray over him after anointing him with olive oil in the name of the Lord.

15 The prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The intense prayer of the righteous is very powerful.

I believe in divine healing. We must keep in mind that Gifts of the Spirit are manifested by GOD. Some think they must have faith to heal but what is needed is such a relationship with GOD that when HE instructs a Christian to lay hands on a person and pray, he or she does it. The person who is sick can call in the elders of the church to anoint him or her with oil and pray over the person.
GOD can heal divinely by HIS touch, through the medical industry or even death.
Faith is required when a Christian is called into fulltime ministry or respond to GOD’S leading him or her to move, change jobs, change careers and the list goes on.

10 to another, the performing of miracles, to another, prophecy, to another, distinguishing between spirits, to another, different kinds of languages, to another, interpretation of languages.

This is not an exhaustive list of Spiritual Gifts.

Now, I speak from personal experience and an, “I think.” I have found that Gifts may be for a season. Some can be more permanent. Some are manifested for a specific purpose, put on hold and then return later to minister for a specific purpose. All Gifts are directed by the indwelling Holy Spirit. We can desire certain Gifts but again it is up to GOD to grant.

Many years ago, I wanted the Gift of tongues but after trying, I never received it. Oh, I babbled something and tried to make myself believe that it was a tongue but it was self-induced. The LORD spoke very plain to me. “English is a perfectly good language for you. If you ever need another language, I will give it to you. I speak in many ways – music, art, poetry and various tongues.” That satisfied me and I rejoice with friends who have the Gift of tongues.

In this verse, we see some of the “Gifts” Paul listed:

-         performing of miracles, to another, prophecy, to another, distinguishing between spirits, to another, different kinds of languages, to another, interpretation of languages.

-         Miracles are events for which there is no human explanation. Some have tied miracles to exorcisms. Exorcism is an area that is a calling. A Christian must be thoroughly prepared to battle Satan during an exorcism. You must have a cadre of prayer warriors who have no un-confessed sin and in harmony with each other, GOD and the person performing the exorcism. But miracles go beyond exorcism. My family and I have been delivered from sure harm because of GOD’S protective hand.

-         Prophesy can be troubling. It can refer to speaking things yet to happen or to speaking to an audience. Prophesy can be preaching spoken by a person anointed with GOD’S message. It can be a message of encouragement, reconciliation, building up or any area only GOD knows that HIS children need to hear and act upon.
-         Distinguishing between spirits is vital to all who seek truth. Discernment of truth and error is the Gift of knowing the difference between truth and false prophesy or utterances. Satan tries to masquerade as GOD and uses false teachers and preachers to speak tainted truth. 1 John 4:1 gives Christians a way to test the spirits because not every spirit comes from GOD.

-         Different kind of languages and the interpretation of languages are Gifts of the Spirit. At Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit fell upon those in Jerusalem, they spoke in known languages. The abilities to speak known languages and to interpret known languages are Gifts. Here it can get tricky because Gifts and talents are often very hard to discern. I have been told and experienced that when someone with a talent does what he or she does, we applaud but when a person with a Gift does what he or she does, it warms our hearts and we are brought closer to GOD. Yes, speaking in an unknown tongue is a Gift and it is very personal. Often, people who have had trauma in their lives, GOD gives them this heavenly language to comfort them. Ms. Cory ten Boom had the Gift of tongues. Often, no one knows who has the Gift of tongues unless asked. But keep in mind when unknown tongues are spoken publically, they must be interpreted, thus the Gift of interpretation of tongues. When tongues are spoken in private, the Holy Spirit gives the speaker the interpretation within the heart of the Christian. It is a knowing within the heart that human words cannot fully reveal. Oh, but it bathes the soul with the presence of the LORD.

Let’s read 1 Corinthians 12:11:

11 But one and the same Spirit is active in all these, distributing to each one as
He wills.

This is a vital verse. GOD gives Spiritual Gifts to whom HE chooses according to HIS will and purpose.

It is vital that we, as Christians, have an intimate relationship with GOD through CHRIST so that we will respond according to the leadership of the Holy Spirit. Christians need to ask the LORD reveal anything in their lives that blocks HIM from granting them certain Gifts.

Do you recall what JESUS said about healing a young son as recorded in Luke 9:37-42:

37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him.

38 Just then a man from the crowd cried out, "Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, because he's my only [child].

39 Often a spirit seizes him; suddenly he shrieks, and it throws him into convulsions until he foams at the mouth; wounding him, it hardly ever leaves him.

40 I begged Your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn't."

41 Jesus replied, "You unbelieving and rebellious generation! How long will I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here."

42 As the boy was still approaching, the demon knocked him down and threw him into severe convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, cured the boy, and gave him back to his father.

Allow GOD to build the relationship in you such that you can be equipped with any Spiritual Gift and the willingness to respond according to HIS will and purpose for you.

Blessings!!!

Bible Study - Priceless (4) - Strengthened by GOD'S Power - Ephesians 3:14-21 - December 27, 2014

Bible Study – Priceless (4) – Strengthened by GOD’S Power – December 27, 2015

This is lesson four (4) in our series entitled “Priceless: Finding Your Value in GOD.”

Our focus scripture is Ephesians 3:14-21

GOD does not leave us on our own but empowers us through HIS Spirit.
The Apostle Paul likely wrote this letter while he was imprisoned in Rome about 60-62 A.D. The first part of his letter addressed the fact that Christians are saved by grace. Our selected scripture focuses on Paul’s prayer for the Christians in Ephesus. Paul was writing to both Christian Jews and especially the Christian Gentiles.

Let’s read Ephesians 2:11-22: (Background)

11 So then, remember that at one time you were Gentiles in the flesh -called "the uncircumcised" by those called "the circumcised," done by hand in the flesh.

The “uncircumcised” were the Gentiles and the “circumcised” were the Jews. Paul being a well trained Jew pointed to the fact that circumcision was a ritual and has nothing to do with a changed heart. What matters to GOD is a changed heart brought about by encountering GOD and acknowledging HIM as your Savior and making HIM LORD of your life.

12 At that time you were without the Messiah, excluded from the citizenship of Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, with no hope and without God in the world.

13 But now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah.

Recognizing and acknowledging JESUS as the promised Messiah and believing that HE gave HIS life for the remission of your sins by the shedding of HIS blood opens the path for an intimate, personal relationship with GOD through CHRIST.

14 For He is our peace, who made both groups one and tore down the dividing wall of hostility. In His flesh

The relationships of people on opposite sides of human ideologies are brought together through faith in JESUS.

15 He (JESUS) did away with the law of the commandments in regulations, so that He might create in Himself one new man from the two, resulting in peace.

Those who place their faith in CHRIST are no longer under the law but are guided by the personality of the law or the original intent of the law which has been fulfilled by CHRIST.

16 [He did this so] that He might reconcile both to God in one body through the cross and put the hostility to death by it.

The ground at the foot of the cross is level and all people have the same opportunity to accept CHRIST by placing their faith in HIM. A step of faith in CHRIST is salvation from sin and eternal death but also the beginning process of being made into the image of CHRIST.

17 When [Christ] came, He proclaimed the good news of peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.

CHRIST preached to the Jews first and then to the Gentiles. CHRIST reconciles all who come to HIM in faith to GOD. HE is the only way. Do you remember what JESUS told HIS disciple Thomas in John 14:5-6:

5 Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"

6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Back to our scripture in Ephesians 2:

18 For through Him (JESUS) we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.

19 So then you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God's household,

20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone.

21 The whole building is being fitted together in Him and is growing into a holy sanctuary in the Lord,

This Holy Sanctuary is not the brick and mortar building but those who have placed their faith in CHRIST function by using the Spiritual Gifts given to them by GOD. Within this Holy Sanctuary each true Christian has a Gift or multiple Gifts of the Spirit. Then the Spiritual Body will function in unity and harmony to meet the needs of the body of CHRIST. CHRIST is the head of the Spiritual Body.

22 in whom you also are being built together for God's dwelling in the Spirit.
Jewish Christians and Gentile Christians are all welcome into GOD’S presence. CHRIST unifies and brings all peoples together under the same roof or Holy Sanctuary.

Let’s read Ephesians 3:1:

1 For this reason, I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles -

Paul preached the unity of all peoples (Christian Jews and Christian Gentiles) and this was the reason he was under house arrest. But his arrest was immaterial to Paul because he counted it as a privilege and a joy to be about the LORD’S work of preaching CHRIST and unity in the Spirit.

Let’s read Ephesians 3:14-17a:

Prayer for Spiritual Power

14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father

Jews typically stood when they prayed so Paul bowing revealed his sense of urgency in praying for them.

15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.

His prayer was directed to GOD, The Father. The miracle of rebirth results in every Christian, regardless of their physical heritage or ancestry, has the same Spiritual Father, thus all GOD’S children are unified as family.

16 [I pray] that He may grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man,

17 and that the Messiah may dwell in your hearts through faith.

Paul knew that CHRIST in a person and the indwelling Holy Spirit was the strength of a Christian walking in the Spirit by faith. If Satan can get a Christian to doubt the presence and indwelling power of CHRIST, that results in a weak Christian. A Christian’s relationship with CHRIST is vital to his or her Spiritual strength. How much strength? It is “according to the riches of HIS Glory.” How much is that? It is beyond our human imagination. What is the purpose? It is to strengthen the inner man or woman. Just as GOD does not discriminate between the Jew or Gentile neither does HE discriminate between male and female.

Let’s read Ephesians 3:17b-19:

[I pray that] you, being rooted and firmly established in love,

GOD’S love is vital to the life of a Christian. Paul used two terms to indicate the foundation that a Christian needs. One, the soil of his or her life must be well prepared to receive the seeds planted in his or her life by the Holy Spirit. Two, a healthy plant must have a well developed root system in order to be firmly established in GOD’S love. The flow of nourishment is vital for the plant to produce healthy fruit and its foundation well established such that when the storms of life come it will survive.

JESUS said it well in John 15:1-8:

1 "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vineyard keeper.

2 Every branch in Me that does not produce fruit He removes, and He prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit.

3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.

4 Remain in Me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me.

5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without Me.

6 If anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

7 If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.

8 My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be My disciples.

Let’s continue with Ephesians 3:18-19:

18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth [of God's love],

19 and to know the Messiah's love that surpasses knowledge, so you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

A plant planted in good soil with a well developed root system is able to withstand the extremes of weather and can survive. Christians who are well established in GOD’S Word and in an intimate, personal relationship with GOD can comprehend the broad aspects of GOD’S infinite love.

This solid foundation results in Christians knowing the love of JESUS and why HE gave HIS life for all who will place their faith in HIM as their Savior. What are the benefits of this knowing? It is because when a Christian comprehends the fullness of what CHRIST did for him or her, he or she will trust the Holy Spirit to fill his or her life. The flesh wants to be in charge and will not relinquish its authority. However, when the pure light of CHRIST shines deep into the lives of Christians and they see truth and know they can trust GOD’S leadership, we can be filled. Why? It is because we relinquish our will into the hands of GOD when we trust HIM. It is no longer “I” but CHRIST.

Christians must keep in mind that we need to confess our sins. We must release or confess the things we harbor in our hearts that are not from GOD to make room for the filling of our minds and hearts by HIM. That is the process of sanctification.

“To know the Messiah's love that surpasses knowledge” comes about from experiencing HIM through obedient service.

Being a Christian is about growing in the love of GOD as we build an intimate, personal relationship with HIM.

Our last week’s lesson was profound. JESUS is the light of the world. HE chose to come to earth as a human and was born of a virgin. HE was and is the true Son of GOD and the true light. Satan attempts to masquerade as light to confuse and defeat the saints of GOD.

Saints are those who have been set aside or sanctified to obediently serve GOD.

Let’s read Ephesians 3:20-21:

20 Now to Him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think-according to the power that works in you-

21 to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

These verses reveal the awesome power of GOD. HIS power exceeds our wildest imagination. A word of caution: There are no limits to GOD’S ability or capability and Christians must be careful to discern between testing GOD and obediently serving HIM. Often, Christians want the power of GOD to demonstrate and authenticate their Spirituality and to be glorified. Obedience to GOD and HIS will and purpose for our lives is vital to bring glory and honor to HIM. It is not about us but about CHRIST in us.

Christians, as individuals, magnify GOD but when Christians gather as a body of believers they collectively glorify GOD. As they are in unity with GOD, they are in turn in unity with each other. When unity is broken the glory of the LORD is compromised.

GOD gives Christians Spiritual Gifts to function as One Body in unity and harmony to meet the Spiritual needs of the body. A healthy Spiritual Body in turn ministers to others as directed by the Holy Spirit.

Are you a healthy Christian functioning within the Spiritual Body? If not, why not? Ask the LORD JESUS to reveal it to you. Blessings!!!

Bible Study - Priceless (3) - Saved by GOD'S Son - John 1:1-18

Bible Study – Priceless (3) – Saved by GOD’S Son – December 20, 2015

This is lesson three (3) in our series entitled “Priceless: Finding Your Value in GOD.”

Our focus scripture is John 1:1-5, 9-14.

JESUS came to earth to rescue us.

In studying for this lesson, I was intrigued with the Apostle John’s use of “Word” for JESUS. “Word” carries the idea of communication and power. JESUS is part of the Trinity – GOD, The Father, JESUS, The Son and The Holy Spirit. JESUS existed with GOD and was GOD. JESUS created all things. JESUS is Light. JESUS/GOD spoke and things began to happen. JESUS/GOD communicates with mankind through the things HE has created and HIS Spirit but the ultimate communicator is CHRIST. Why?
Because, HE left HIS home in Glory and willingly came to earth to experience human life and to give that life for the remission of sins to all who will place their faith in HIM.

In studying this lesson and while pondering, “what did it mean for JESUS to come to earth and experience life as a human?” Now, this is just a thought for you to ponder, JESUS told HIS disciples that HE was going to prepare a place for them. Did JESUS’ time upon earth, as a human, yet GOD, give HIM insight regarding the need to make heaven more suitable for those who place their faith in HIM to live eternally in heaven? I know some are saying, “Have you lost your mind?” Maybe! Keep in mind that JESUS is the creator of all things. Did, by experiencing human life, give HIM a different perspective for eternal life in the Spiritual body HE will fashion for us in heaven?

JESUS not only communicated Spiritually but in the flesh. JESUS was flesh, bones, blood, water and Spirit. HE left HIS home in Glory to dwell among us as 100% human. The proof that HE was 100% human is in the fact that HE gave HIS human life for all who will place their faith in HIM. As further proof that HE was Who HE said HE was is based upon the fact that GOD, His Father, raised HIM from the dead and gave HIM HIS Glorified body. All who have placed their faith in CHRIST will receive their Glorified bodies when HE returns to earth for the second time. JESUS had to trust the Father to restore HIS eternal life. The resurrection of CHRIST revealed the power of the Father over death and to restore the human body after physical death to eternal life. JESUS was the firstfruits reflecting the power of GOD over eternal death, when the penalty for sin was paid in full.

JESUS being referred to as “Word” or “Logos” reflects HIS mission along with GOD’S mission of revealing light and truth to every human in ways humans can understand and be led to a point of decision to either accept or reject CHRIST as their Savior. The Holy Spirit is very much a part of this effort leading up to and beyond salvation from sin and eternal death. GOD will place every stumbling block in front of a person to guide him or her to accept CHRIST as his or her Savior. But ultimately the decision is up to each individual. A person cannot get into GOD’S family by his or her parents being a Christian, doing good or joining a church or many other things dreamed up. CHRIST in you makes you a Christian through the miracle of rebirth in your spirit.

The “Word” communicates with you in the depths of your heart which the Apostle Paul refers to as the “eyes of your heart.” The “Word” transcends all other forms of communication. It is clear, understandable and a knowing in the most secret place. It is the place where no one else can communicate with you. So listen up as JESUS speaks to you, not only to lead you to salvation but if you are already a Christian, to lead you into a deeper relationship with HIM through understanding and obedience. But be mindful that Satan will appeal to your flesh and confuse you with questions, doubts or anything that will prevent you from accepting and acknowledging CHRIST as your Savior. Let’s explore!

Let’s read John 1:1-5:

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

As already discussed, the “Word” is JESUS. “In the beginning was the Word (JESUS).” JESUS already existed before “the beginning,” JESUS was and JESUS is 100% GOD. JESUS was not a created being. “The beginning” indicates a beginning of time. The world began at a time but GOD, JESUS and The Holy Spirit had no beginning. They always have been and always will be.

When Moses asked GOD to give him HIS name, HE said “I AM.”

Exodus 3:14: (GOD was speaking to Moses)

14 God replied to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you." [“I AM” can also be translated – Or “I AM because I AM or I Will Be Who I Will Be.” To me that is total supremacy.

Let’s fast forward to what JESUS had to say about HIS existence before HIS birth as a human as recorded in John 17:1-5:

1 Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said: Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son so that the Son may glorify You,

2 for You gave Him authority over all flesh; so He may give eternal life to all You have given Him.

3 This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and the One You have sent-Jesus Christ.

4 I have glorified You on the earth by completing the work You gave Me to do.

5 Now, Father, glorify Me in Your presence with that glory I had with You before the world existed.

Although JESUS was 100% human, HE recalled HIS presence with HIS Father in heaven. Once we encounter the One True Living GOD through faith in CHRIST, Christians never forget it and neither does GOD. Once GOD’S child: always GOD’S child.

Let’s explore “Word” A little further. As mentioned “Word” is a translation of the word “logos,” which both the Hebrews and the Greeks knew and understood. The Stoic philosophers considered “logos” as a rational principle that governs the universe.

The Apostle John walked with JESUS and knew the reality of JESUS in both the flesh, HIS resurrected Glorified Body, HIS ascension into heaven and by the confirming and assuring presence of the indwelling Holy Spirit after Pentecost. The Apostle John did not have to resort to being philosophical. He knew the truth. Do you know the truth? Accept CHRIST as your Savior and you will be indwelled by truth.

2 He was with God in the beginning.

This can be translated “The Word was face to face with GOD.” HE was intimate with GOD such that the two are one.

3 All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created.

4 Life was in Him, and that life was the light of men.
Life, both physical and Spiritual, are sourced in CHRIST, as well as, eternal life.

In Genesis 3:24: (After Adam and Eve sinned)

24 He drove man out, and east of the garden of Eden He stationed cherubim with a flaming, whirling sword to guard the way to the tree of life.

The cherubim were might angels of GOD. Dr. William Hendriksen wrote on page 70, in his New Testament Commentary, ISBN: 0-8010-4051-5, “As Philo sees it, these Cherubim are two divine potencies: God’s loving-kindness and His sovereignty. The sword is the Logos or Reason which unites the two.” CHRIST is the flaming sword through which all must gain entrance to GOD and Heaven. Caution, this is an allegory espoused by the philosopher Philo of Alexander.

5 That light shines in the darkness, yet the darkness did not overcome it.

JESUS is the third part of the trinity. HE is the light of the world. HE is truth and in HIM there is no darkness. Nothing is hidden. HE is truth. HE is the promised Messiah. Truth and Light equals CHRIST. Caution: Satan can masquerade as an angel of light.  He is a liar and the father of lies.

JESUS is the source of light therefore darkness cannot overcome light. Light rules the darkness. We must walk in the light and toward the light. When we are in total darkness, the tiniest ray of light guides us to the source of that light.

My young son and I have been spelunking – exploring caves and we spent the night in a cave. In a cave you can experience total darkness and your light source is vital.

I recall that we were scaling a wall, with a 10-15 foot drop with jaggered rocks below. I was going around a corner on the wall and thought that would not be a good time for my light to go out but it did. I panicked for a few seconds, when the person behind me came around a previous sharp corner and his light gave me enough light for me to see where I needed to place my hands and feet to make it to safety.

There are times when we are in dark times and we need the light of others to help us through dark times.

Let’s read John 1:6-13:

6 There was a man named John who was sent from God.

This John is John the Baptist. John the Baptizer was the forerunner or the herald who announced the Messiah. In Bible times, a forerunner ran ahead of the king to alert the people that the king was coming so they could prepare for his arrival. John the Baptist announced the arrival of the promised Messiah, The King of King’s.

7 He (John the Baptist) came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.

8 He (John the Baptist) was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.

9 The true light (JESUS), who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

As we discussed earlier, the light communicates – JESUS entered the world to represent GOD and HIS love for all who will place their faith in HIS Only Son, JESUS.

10 He (JESUS) was in the world, and the world was created through Him, yet the world did not recognize Him.

JESUS came in the flesh and dwelled in the physical world HE created, yet the worldly minded people did not make the connection. Many were expecting a physical conqueror, not One Who would bring eternal salvation that would transcend anything the physical had to offer.

11 He (JESUS) came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him.
JESUS came first to the Jews. The Jews for the most part did not see HIM as the promised Messiah. They wanted a deliverer from Roman rule. But those who did receive HIM receive something of eternal value.

12 But to all who did receive Him (JESUS), He (JESUS) gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name,

13 who were born, not of blood, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.

It is only through faith in JESUS that anyone can be born into GOD’S family. Through the miracle of rebirth, Christians are born into GOD’S family and are HIS children for eternity.

Keep in mind what was written regarding the cherubim: GOD’S loving-kindness and HIS sovereignty. GOD’S love compels HIM to give every human the opportunity for eternal life with HIM, through faith in JESUS but HIS sovereignty restrains HIM from making it carte banc. It takes a decision. Have you made that decision? If not, why not right now? Satan says wait but eternity is only a heartbeat away. Do it now!

Let’s read John 1:14:

14 The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

GOD had a plan. Some Bible scholars and teachers say this is the most important verse in the entire Bible.

JESUS, The Word, became flesh. HE was born a human and lived as a human and was tempted as humans are tempted, yet without sin. As proof that HE was human, HE died. HE gave HIS life that all that place their faith in HIM will have eternal life through the miracle of rebirth into GOD’S family. GOD raised HIM from the physically dead to receive HIS Glorified body. JESUS is the hope of all mankind. Not a single person will leave earth without dying physically. Eternity waits.

JESUS was full of grace and truth. Grace is GOD’S unmerited favor. No human can earn grace, it is a free gift and it comes from GOD who loves you. Satan wants every person to feel unworthy but GOD’S grace leads us to truth and helps us to abide in truth, regardless of the angry waves surrounding us.

For those seeking to have a personal relationship with CHRIST, they must go toward the light of CHRIST. CHRIST loved you so much that HE gave HIS life for you. “Ask and it will be given to you, Seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7) This includes Christians who desire to walk in the Spirit but have sinned and feel that they are not worthy of GOD’S love. Don’t let Satan rob you by believing that lie. You are precious to GOD and The Lord JESUS. Ask HIM to forgive you and restore you to full fellowship with HIM – as HIS Child.

Let's read John 1:15-18:

15 (John (John the Baptist) testified concerning Him and exclaimed, "This was the One of whom I said, 'The One coming after me has surpassed me, because He existed before me.' ")

16 Indeed, we have all received grace after grace from His fullness,

17 for although the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

The personality of the law reflects the love of GOD and CHRIST.

18 No one has ever seen God. The One and Only Son- the One who is at the Father's side - He has revealed Him.

Do you recall the teaching of JESUS in John 14:6-14?

6 Jesus told him (HIS Disciple Thomas), "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

JESUS is the gate keeper. Please your faith in JESUS and enter into HIS presence with praise, thanksgiving, gratitude and receive eternal salvation.

Jesus Reveals the Father

7 "If you know Me, you will also know My Father. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him."

This is not to just know about but to “Know.” A Christian’s journey is to get to know CHRIST in an intimate loving way and to build a trusting relationship.

8 "Lord," said Philip, "show us the Father, and that's enough for us."

9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been among you all this time without your knowing Me, Philip? The one who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

10 Don't you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? The words I speak to you I do not speak on My own. The Father who lives in Me does His works.

11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me. Otherwise, believe because of the works themselves.

JESUS IS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. Christians reflect that light to all who live in darkness. We must let the light of CHRIST be reflected from our lives to others with whom we come in contact. Are we living such that others desire what we have in CHRIST? So live in the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit! Blessings!!!

Bible Study - Priceless (2) - Freed by GOD'S Forgiveness - John 8:2-11 - December 13, 2015

Bible Study – Priceless (2) – Freed by GOD’S Forgiveness – December 13, 2015.

This is lesson two (2) in our series entitled “Priceless: Finding Your Value in GOD.”

Our focus scripture is John 8:2-11.

We deserve punishment but GOD forgives.

The love of GOD compels HIM to forgive but our hearts play a vital role.

Our nature is to sin. GOD’S nature is to forgive and to love. Most Christians have heard, when witnessing to a person without CHRIST, the person to say “How can a loving GOD not allow me to enter heaven?” If that is your thinking, I ask you to reconsider.

It is GOD’S job to reveal Himself to every human who has or will ever be born. HE alone knows when and if a person responds to the light he or she has received. HIS handiwork is all around every one of us and it points to HIM. HIS Spirit works in every heart to bring about salvation. But HE did not make us robots but gave us the freedom to choose. How a person chooses determines his or her final eternal destination.

“JESUS extends mercy and grants forgiveness. Once again, we see how valuable we are in HIS sight. Not trash to be destroyed but a treasure to be reclaimed.” Herschel Hobbs Commentary, winter 2015-2016, page 27, published by LifeWay, Nashville, TN.

Let’s read John 7:45-52 and 53: (Background)

45 Then the temple police came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why haven't you brought Him?"

46 The police answered, "No man ever spoke like this!"

47 Then the Pharisees responded to them: "Are you fooled too?

48 Have any of the rulers believed in Him? Or any of the Pharisees?

49 But this crowd, which doesn't know the law, is accursed!"

50 Nicodemus - the one who came to Him previously, being one of them-said to them,

51 "Our law doesn't judge a man before it hears from him and knows what he's doing, does it?"

52 "You aren't from Galilee too, are you?" they replied. "Investigate and you will see that no prophet arises from Galilee."

Notice, this same Nicodemus who came to JESUS at night in John 3 challenged his fellow religious leaders. Nicodemus was urging his colleagues to check the law versus the life of JESUS. If they were to look into the law, they should see that JESUS was the promised Messiah. Nicodemus had gone to JESUS and he was convinced that JESUS was the promised Messiah. Notice how quickly the religious leaders put down Nicodemus. It takes courage and conviction to take an opposing stand against your peers.

[53 So each one went to his house.

[Notice the bracket at the beginning of Chapter 7, verse 53, ends with another bracket after verse 11 in Chapter 8 in some Bibles. This indicates that these verses are not found in the best, oldest copies of the New Testament. In some ancient manuscripts the story appears in other places in John’s Gospel or in Luke’s Gospel. We will treat the story as authentic and as part of John’s Gospel. Copied from the “Advanced Bible Study,” written by Dr. Warren McWilliams, winter 2015-2016, page 20, published by LifeWay, One LifeWay Plaza, Nashville, TN 37234-0175.]

Let’s read John 8:1-6:

1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

Those JESUS was teaching went home but JESUS went to the Mount of Olives. Likely to pray.

2 At dawn He went to the temple complex again, and all the people were coming to Him. He sat down and began to teach them.

Surrounding the temple were several courts – Court of the Gentiles, Court of the Women, Court of Israel – JESUS was in an outer court where HE could teach all those coming to the temple.

3 Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, making her stand in the center.

The scribes were those who copied the Jewish Scriptures and in doing so they became experts in their interpretation. The Pharisees also gave their interpretation of the scriptures along with the Sadducees. The Sadducees considered the Pharisees more liberal than themselves. The Pharisees believed in the resurrection of the dead but the Sadducees did not, that is why they were sad-u-see.

4 "Teacher," they said to Him, "this woman was caught in the act of committing adultery.

They referred to JESUS as teacher. They were appealing to JESUS’ ego and attempting to flatter HIM by recognizing HIM as “teacher.” If they had considered HIM teacher they would have listened to HIM and put HIS teachings into action.

The woman was caught. We do not know who caught her or if it was a set up to challenge JESUS.

Leviticus 20:10:

10 If a man commits adultery with a married woman-if he commits adultery with his neighbor's wife-both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death.

Deuteronomy 22:22-26:

22 "If a man is discovered having sexual relations with [another] man's wife, both the man who had sex with the woman and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel.

23 If there is a young woman who is a virgin engaged to a man, and [another] man encounters her in the city and has sex with her,

24 you must take the two of them out to the gate of that city and stone them to death-the young woman because she did not cry out in the city and the man because he has violated his neighbor's fiancée. You must purge the evil from you.

25 But if the man encounters the engaged woman in the open country, and he seizes and rapes her, only the man who raped her must die.

26 Do nothing to the young woman, because she is not guilty of an offense deserving death.

Notice that the man that was involved was also to be stoned to death or die.

5 In the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do You say?"

Notice that they did not refer to the man involved. The next verse gives us a clue to their scheme.

6 They asked this to trap Him, in order that they might have evidence to accuse Him. Jesus stooped down and started writing on the ground with His finger.

Notice, the motive of the religious leaders was to trap JESUS. The law stated that a woman caught in adultery was to be stoned to death. But the law also included both parties. Notice the man was not included in this case. Stoning to death was not common during this period in Hebrew history because of Roman rule. The Roman’s were to carry out any executions, thus as in the case of the crucifixion of JESUS.

So the religious leaders wanted JESUS to be put into a compromising situation. Would HE not consider sin as sin or would HE uphold the Jewish law concerning the penalty for sin and be at odds with the Romans? Let’s see.

JESUS had stooped down and was writing on the ground with HIS finger. What HE was writing we do not know. Was HE praying and asking GOD, HIS Father for wisdom? The word “writing” carries the idea of drawing. Was HE doodling? Some speculate that HE may have written, where is the man? We do not know.

Let’s read John 8:7-9:

7 When they persisted in questioning Him, He stood up and said to them, "The one without sin among you should be the first to throw a stone at her."

The religious leaders demanded a response from JESUS. So HE stood up and spoke. The law required the offended person to throw the first stone. Then that was a cue for others to join in throwing their stones.

8 Then He stooped down again and continued writing on the ground.

JESUS stooped down again and continued writing. Some speculate that JESUS was writing various sins and in doing so convicted those with stones in their hands of their sin. But again, we do not know.

9 When they heard this, they left one by one, starting with the older men. Only He was left, with the woman in the center.

Notice that those making up the mob began to leave starting with the older men until only the woman was left. Again, we have to speculate why the older men left first. Were they wiser? Did they realize that they had committed sin either physically or mentally? Did the younger men wait for the older men to lead the way?

There are times when we have to walk away from a situation. It could be that the older men were wiser and needed to be an example for the younger men. Bottom line, we do not know but it gives us a lot to ponder as we examine our attitudes toward others because we are all sinners saved by GOD’S grace.

Let’s read John 8:10-11:

10 When Jesus stood up, He said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"

11 "No one, Lord," she answered. "Neither do I condemn you," said Jesus. "Go, and from now on do not sin anymore."]

Notice the ending bracket after verse 11.

JESUS stood up and asked the woman where those who were condemning her were? She responded with “No one, LORD.” Was her reference to JESUS as LORD a confession of her sin and her acceptance of JESUS as her Savior? Or was it a term of respect such as “Sir.” The original indicates that it was a term of respect. HE stood up for her. She knew that she was guilty.

JESUS made it clear that her accusers were no longer present and HE too did not accuse her. HE admonished her to go and sin no more.

When we ask JESUS to forgive us for our sins, HE does and we are no longer condemned by sin. We too must go and sin no more. But we do sin. That is when GOD’S grace is sufficient and the righteousness imputed to us by GOD maintains our forgiven and cleansed status before GOD, when we have truly been born-again. The indwelling Holy Spirit changes our old nature into a new nature through the process of sanctification. We take off our old clothes and put on our new clothes of righteousness.

When we are GOD’S child, the Holy Spirit brings to our attention our sin. When we confess our sins and repent, GOD forgives us, cleanses and restores our fellowship with HIM. Our salvation is never lost.

Salvation is not a license to sin but an opportunity to be made into the image of CHRIST and to obediently serve our LORD. GOD never overrides our right to choose.  Blessings!!!
