Bible Study – Productive (1) – Good Work – March 2, 2014

This is lesson one in our new series entitled, “Productive: Finding Joy in What We Do.”

Our scripture is Genesis 1:28; 2:8-9, 15-17.

Work is a gift from GOD, not a curse. It is a gift but it is the thorns and thistles that trouble me as stated in Genesis 3:18.  

Let’s read - Genesis 3:17-19 (This was after Adam and Eve disobeyed GOD and sinned.)

17 And He said to Adam, “Because you listened to your wife’s voice and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘Do not eat from it’: The ground is cursed because of you. You will eat from it by means of painful labor all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 You will eat bread by the sweat of your brow until you return to the ground, since you were taken from it. For you are dust, and you will return to dust.”

When GOD formed man, one purpose was for him to tend and care for the garden that would sustain him and others in the garden. GOD made woman to be his helpmate and companion. When Adam saw Eve he was pleased and excited. After they disobeyed GOD and sin came into the world, Adam and Eve went from tending to tilling.

Mankind was not formed to be on an eternal vacation but to be active in caring for and sustaining what GOD had created for their use, pleasure and to have an eternal relationship with GOD.

GOD set the example for work. HE worked by speaking and then by becoming personally involved when HE planted the garden, caused it to grow and formed the first male and made the first female.

HE was organized when HE created the universe and the world. What HE did on day one was necessary to sustain what HE did on day two and so-forth. GOD worked six days and then HE rested. Mankind, in general, has followed GOD’S example of working six days and resting on the seventh day.

GOD made humans in HIS own image and the image of the Son and Holy Spirit. When we, as Christians, see and understand the attributes of GOD, we function better when we follow those same attributes in our lives.

As mentioned, GOD was organized. HE had HIS plan worked out ahead of creation. Remember the verse in Ephesians 1:4:

4 For He chose us in Him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in His sight. In love.

GOD worked and then HE rested. GOD did not get tired but I believe HE was setting an example for humans to follow.

For the next six (6) weeks we will explore our new series entitled “Productive: Finding Joy in What We Do.”

Let’s read Genesis 1:24-27: (Background scripture – Introduction of mankind into the world.)

24 Then God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that crawl, and the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. 25 So God made the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and creatures that crawl on the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female.

GOD formed male and female to rule over earth. Mankind was commissioned to be stewards of earth, its resources and accountable to GOD.

Notice that GOD spoke to create the physical materials into being, which HE used the ground to form living things including humans and animals. HE formed the male from the ground and breathed life into him and made the female from a body part of the male. HE became personally and intimately involved in their formation. That makes mankind very special and important to GOD.

GOD is all knowing and HE made mankind with the freedom to choose. In HIS foreknowledge, HE knew that Adam and Eve would sin and incur the sentence of eternal death. So why did GOD not just terminate HIS plan?

I believe HIS reason is revealed in Ephesians 1:4, in that every human to ever be conceived was in the mind of GOD, thus a real person. For GOD to terminate HIS plan for mankind would have condemned mankind without the opportunity for mankind to be redeemed. HIS foreknowledge gave mankind the opportunity for salvation from sure destruction. Terminating HIS plan before it was executed would have aborted mankind.

Are you pleased to live as a human? HIS focus was not based upon the short time humans live upon earth but upon their eternal existence. GOD did not make mankind for time but for eternity. HE knows eternal existence will be awesome for those who choose to be redeemed by the shed blood of HIS only Son, JESUS. That is why HE had a plan to redeem humankind from eternal death for all who would place their faith in CHRIST.

I think John 3:16-18 captures the heart and love of GOD toward mankind:

16 “For God loved the world •in this way: He gave His •One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world that He might condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 Anyone who believes in Him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the One and Only Son of God.

Just as Adam and Eve made a decision to disobey GOD and receive the sentence of eternal death, they and all of their offspring have the opportunity to make a decision to be redeemed from eternal death through faith in CHRIST and receive the free gift of eternal life. Those who are redeemed by the shed blood of CHRIST, through the miracle of rebirth, are born-again in their spirit. When they are born-again they become GOD’S children with all the rights and privileges as HIS Children. All who place their faith in CHRIST are restored to GOD’S original desire and intent for humans, which is eternity in perfect relationship with HIM.

Let’s read Genesis 2:8-9:

8 The Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there He placed the man He had formed. 9 The Lord God caused to grow out of the ground every tree pleasing in appearance and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden, as well as the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Notice that GOD planted the garden, which was located in Eden. The Hebrew word for “garden” means “to defend, to put a shield around it to protect it” thus an area protected by a wall or a hedge. Eden means “delight or pleasure.” Although some direction of location was given, we do not know where Eden was located but the original Hebrew reveals that the Garden of Eden was a real place. GOD planted the garden and caused the garden to grow and produce edible products to sustain mankind and the life within which HE had formed and given life to. Notice in our next scripture that GOD placed man in the garden. Where was man before GOD placed him into the garden? He was in the care of GOD.

Let’s read Genesis 2:15:

15 The Lord God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to work it and watch over it.

Scripture does not reveal how GOD placed or put man into the Garden. It could have been a zap or GOD could have led or guided Adam to the garden. The important thing is that GOD placed him where HE wanted him to be. HE still does. Where we work, male or female, is important to GOD’S plan for our lives.

GOD ordained mankind to work and care for that which GOD had created. Notice in our next scripture that GOD put man in charge of the garden and made him responsible and accountable to HIM for the garden. This is why GOD had to send HIS only Son, JESUS, to redeem those who choose to be redeemed from the sentence of eternal death because of the original sin. The first Adam failed by sinning but the second Adam, JESUS, succeeded by remaining sinless 1 Corinthians 15:47-49:

47 The first man (Adam) was from the earth and made of dust; the second man (JESUS) is from heaven. 48 Like the man made of dust, so are those who are made of dust; like the heavenly man, so are those who are heavenly. 49 And just as we have borne the image of the man made of dust, we will also bear the image of the heavenly man.

Let’s read Genesis 2:16-17:

16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden, 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.”

GOD put man in charge of the garden. HE made him responsible and accountable for the garden. GOD gave Adam one restriction and that was “not to eat from the tree of the knowledge good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.”

The tree of life was also in the garden but GOD did not place any restrictions regarding the tree of life.

Many have debated why GOD restricted man from eating the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. I think one clue comes from GOD after Adam and Eve sinned “The Lord God said, “Since man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil, he must not reach out, take from the tree of life, eat, and live forever.” In knowing good and evil, I think mankind would not need GOD and become a god unto themselves. Mankind would try to imitate GOD by establishing their own human standards which would be far different from GOD’S criteria. We must keep in mind the foreknowledge, omniscience and omnipresence of GOD over our limited knowledge, power, abilities and ability to be anywhere at any time. Living forever in this state would have resulted in mankind being in a terrible state from which it could never escape. Also, we must keep in mind that when death came to mankind it also came to all of nature. Nature (creation) is waiting to be redeemed when mankind if fully redeemed at the end. (Romans 8:19-22 - 19 For the creation eagerly waits with anticipation for God’s sons to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility —not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it —in the hope 21 that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage of corruption into the glorious freedom of God’s children. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together with labor pains until now.)

At this point did Adam and Eve know what GOD meant by dying? Since they both ate the forbidden fruit and did not physically die at that instant, what was GOD talking about? The instant Adam took a bite of the forbidden fruit their eyes were opened and they realized that they were naked. Yes, they did die to the relationship they had with GOD. They immediately sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.

Any time we disobey GOD our first thoughts are usually to deny that we have done anything wrong.

Let’s consider the scripture leading up to the making of woman.

Let’s read Genesis 2:7: (GOD formed man)

7 Then the Lord God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.  

Let’s read Genesis 2:19-20, leading up to the making of woman:

19 So the Lord God formed out of the ground every wild animal and every bird of the sky, and brought each to the man to see what he would call it. And whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal; but for the man no helper was found as his complement.

Let’s read Genesis 2:21-25: (The making of woman.)

21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place. 22 Then the Lord God made the rib He had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 And the man said: This one, at last, is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called “woman,” for she was taken from man. 24 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh. 25 Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame.

GOD took a body part from the man and made the woman. I believe woman was made from a body part of the man for both man and woman to seek and long for each other. It could be like identical twins separated at birth always having a sense of something missing in their lives until they are united with their twin. I think this was GOD’S way of creating the desire for man and woman to come together as one, in unity and having a sense of harmony and completion through an intimate bonding relationship. This is why, as a couple, male and female, GOD considers them as one in the flesh. They are complete.

GOD took the body part from man’s side, not his feet or his head because woman was made to be man’s helpmate and to walk by his side. Woman was not made to be a doormat for man to walk upon or to rule over. She is co-equal with man. (But sin changed this - More on this later.) GOD gave a special calling to man to be responsible and accountable to HIM for the garden.

I think this is so neat. When man first saw Eve, in essence, he said, “WOW!!! This is what I have been waiting for. She is the one.” It was love at first sight.

Let’s read Genesis 1:28-31:

28 God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.” 29 God also said, “Look, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the surface of the entire earth and every tree whose fruit contains seed. This food will be for you, 30 for all the wildlife of the earth, for every bird of the sky, and for every creature that crawls on the earth—everything having the breath of life in it. I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 God saw all that He had made, and it was very good. Evening came and then morning: the sixth day.

GOD blessed them as HE called them to ministry. No Christian should enter into ministry without GOD’S blessing. GOD would relate to Adam and Eve in a special way over HIS other creations and the things HE formed from the ground, such as animals. HE spoke to Adam and Eve. Could it be since GOD used the same materials, the ground, to make animals that humans have such a kindred spirit with them?  

GOD called Adam and Eve to be responsible for three areas related to being a male and female couple who could produce a family and two areas related to work to sustain them and their offspring:

-         Be fruitful, this is a term used to describe a vine that produces a useable product or a flower that blossoms. It is tied to the womb and offspring from the womb and encompasses procreating and filling the earth.  Their calling was to reproduce, which is tied to the next word.

-         multiply, which means to “become many.”

-         fill the earth, meant for Adam and Eve to fill the earth with many humans. The Hebrew word used carries the idea of more than increasing the number but it also includes taking the responsibility to bring to completion that which has been produced. They had the responsibility to help that which had been produced, humans, to become responsible members of society and contribute to society by being responsible functional members of society. There is more to producing a baby than having a baby. It takes two and it takes commitment to the babies care, training and becoming a part of society. It is a lifelong process and commitment.

-         subdue it (the earth). Creation needs tending or care to be useful to humans in the present and the future. During the period before Adam and Eve sinned, they tended earth with little trouble. However, after Adam and Eve sinned, nature was not only condemned but nature became more troublesome. Rather than cooperating with mankind, nature pushed back more harshly. As GOD told Adam, the ground was cursed and it produced thorns and thistles. Of course, we can think of weather and natural disasters in addition to thorns and thistles. Those outside the south may not be familiar with kudzu. In our area, kudzu is everywhere and takes over if not managed. Near us is a house that once had people living in it. When they moved out, no one moved back into the house. It has been interesting to watch the kudzu take the house over.   

-         Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth. GOD commissioned Adam and Eve, thus mankind, to rule over the animal kingdom like a king would rule his kingdom.

GOD’S desire and intent was for mankind to function as a family and to be stewards of earth.

Let’s read Genesis 3:16: (This is after Adam and Eve had sinned. The dynamics of their relationship changed.)

16 He said to the woman: I will intensify your labor pains; you will bear children in anguish. Your desire will be for your husband, yet he will rule over you.

GOD’S intent was and still is for man and woman to be co-equals. Eating the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil changed the male and female relationship because their relationship with GOD was changed by disobedience “he will rule over you.”

When humans are in right relationship with GOD, through CHRIST, they are in right relationship with each other. Unity is restored with GOD and each other. But when they are out of relationship with GOD through CHRIST there is trouble.

Does that mean all is well with couples who are Christians? No, because the flesh wars against the Spirit. But having the right relationship with GOD through CHRIST gives a Christian couple a firmer foundation upon which to build their relationship as they build their relationship together with GOD. Bible Study – Questions (6) – GOD Meets Us in Our Suffering – February 23, 2014

This is lesson six (6) and our final lesson in our series entitled “Real Questions People Ask.”

Our scripture is Job 30:26-31; 42:1-6.

GOD meets us in our suffering.

If GOD is good, all powerful and loves humans, “Why is there suffering in the world?” This is likely one of the most often asked questions regarding GOD. Why do bad things happen to good people or innocent children? First of all, we live in an evil world. In our lesson, Job (jobe) was a good man of integrity, who honored and respected GOD.

This study of Job may challenge many but we must keep in mind that GOD is sovereign. HE knows us in infinite detail and the end result of a test HE allows. Bad things that happen to people can be the result of several situations:

-         As we will see in this study, GOD can allow testing in our lives for any number of purposes.

-         Natural causes. The result of living in the world.

-         A  Christian can remove him or herself from the circle of protection of GOD through certain desires that lead to sin. When he or she breaks the law such as murder, stealing, and so forth, he or she suffers the consequence(s) of sin under the law. James the brother of JESUS makes it clear that in these circumstances GOD is not involved in the allowing. GOD, in HIS wisdom, chooses not to intervene and override some of the choices people make – James 1:12-15: (12) A man who endures trials is blessed, because when he passes the test he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him. (13) No one undergoing a trial should say, “I am being tempted by God.” For God is not tempted by evil, and He Himself doesn’t tempt anyone. (14) But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desires. (15) Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.

Bible scholars are not sure who wrote the book of Job. Some think it was the first book written, possibly written by Moses. Other Bible scholars believe it was written by Job or Elihu. It is estimated to have been written 2000-1800 BC.

The Book of Job deals with the important subject of suffering and gives us a look behind the scenes of life and spiritual life. The Apostle Peter reveals that in 1 Peter 5:8-9:

8 Be serious! Be alert! Your adversary the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. 9 Resist him and be firm in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are being experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world.

Satan was roaming earth seeking someone to devour. A roaring lion is a hungry lion.  Satan still roams earth today, seeking who he can devour. GOD suggested Job because Job loved GOD and was a GOD fearing, honest person. GOD knew Job and his heart toward HIM. But did Job know GOD or just about GOD. When we are tested our true relationship with GOD is revealed. Is it genuine or fake?

Satan told GOD that Job worshipped HIM because of his prosperity. Chapter one of Job gives the details of Job’s first test. GOD allowed Satan to take all of Job’s possessions including his family. When that did not result in Job cursing GOD, Satan told GOD in Job 2:4-7:

4 “Skin for skin!” Satan answered the Lord. “A man will give up everything he owns in exchange for his life. 5 But stretch out Your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse You to Your face.” 6 “Very well,” the Lord told Satan, “he is in your power; only spare his life.” 7 So Satan left the Lord’s presence and infected Job with terrible boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head.

The second test began.

We have the opportunity to read the complete story regarding Job, whereas, when we are in the midst of suffering we only get to see part of it moment by moment as it unfolds in our lives. During these times, we have to trust in GOD bringing about the conclusion. There are a few times when we have the opportunity to look back and see how the role of what we suffered was in the plan of GOD for us. We need to keep in mind 2 Corinthians 1:3-4:

3 Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. 4 He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

We live upon earth, which is not heaven. Sin has entered earth and bad things happen. When things go wrong it is Satan who is the culprit. Yes, Satan entices and lures. GOD is in control of all who are HIS children. That does not mean smooth sailing but it does mean that Satan must get GOD’S permission to attack you unless you remove yourself from HIS protective care. 

In the Garden of Eden, GOD told Adam and Eve if they ate the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, they would die. Up until the time they disobeyed GOD, they had eternal life. They had a perfect relationship with GOD and the freedom to eat the fruit from any tree in the garden except that one tree, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

The Tree of Life was in the garden and they were not forbidden to eat its fruit. But after they sinned, GOD had to guard the Tree of Life to prevent them and their off-spring from eating the fruit from the Tree of Life or else they and their offspring would live forever in their fallen state. Some people may think that it would great to live forever, even in this fallen state. But how would you like to live in an evil world being tortured and tormented without any way to escape or die while experiencing unthinkable pain forever. Often, death is a blessing.

The story of Job gives us insight into matters that go on in the spiritual realm. Is this a real story or a myth? I believe it to be real.

At first glance, it appears that a contest was taking place between GOD and Satan. But clearly GOD was in control of Satan and Job had the freedom to choose. We need to examine the complete story to see the end result. Those who have been through difficult times have likely questioned GOD but after a time, they have likely come to the point of acknowledging GOD’S sovereignty, wisdom and authority. But I can tell you it is not an easy journey.

In our lesson, we will see that Job questioned GOD and GOD answered him when Job paused long enough to listen to GOD. Over the years, I have had my list of questions I planned to ask HIM when I get to heaven. But most, if not all, of my questions are now mute. I have concluded that HE is right and I must trust HIS judgment. Let’s explore!

First, let’s look at background scripture to get an understanding of what was going on with Job as recorded in Job 2:1-10:

Satan’s Second Test of Job (This was after GOD allowed Satan to take Job’s family and possessions. This time Satan had GOD’S permission to attack Job personally.)

1 One day the sons of God came again to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them to present himself before the Lord. 2 The Lord asked Satan, “Where have you come from?” “From roaming through the earth,” Satan answered Him, “and walking around on it.” 3 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity, who • fears God and turns away from evil. He still retains his integrity, even though you incited Me against him, to destroy him without just cause.” 4 “Skin for skin!” Satan answered the Lord. “A man will give up everything he owns in exchange for his life. 5 But stretch out Your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse You to Your face.” 6 “Very well,” the Lord told Satan, “he is in your power; only spare his life.” 7 So Satan left the Lord’s presence and infected Job with terrible boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head. 8 Then Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself while he sat among the ashes. 9 His wife said to him, “Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die!” 10 “You speak as a foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept only good from God and not adversity?” Throughout all this Job did not sin in what he said.

This was the second time GOD mentioned Job to Satan. Notice that GOD had to give Satan permission to test Job. Why would GOD allow the righteous to be tested? HE knows what they are made of and the end result. HE knows when the test is over they will be stronger, on solid Spiritual ground and in a firm relationship with HIM.

We know that Job’s family was destroyed in the first test. HIS tests are to validate truth and to reveal that which is genuine. Plus there is more going on in heaven than we know.

I know that it is difficult to impossible to validate Spiritual teachings and insight revealed by GOD to other Christians. Many years ago, GOD revealed an added dimension and understanding regarding those who suffer and die.

A number of years ago, I was upset with GOD because HE had not healed a lady of cancer for whom we had been praying. Then another lady had died of cancer for which we had been praying. I was upset with GOD. I was at that stage of my Spiritual growth that I thought if I asked it, it would be done. I was an immature Christian who thought GOD should jump to my requests. There were two people we had prayed for and both died. This was not a good track record for answering prayer.

Anyway, I was at the lake on my boat which was tied to the dock. I was having a serious conversation with the LORD. HE brought to mind a certain lady that had cancer for whom we had been praying.

The conversation went much like this and abbreviated:

GOD asked me, do you remember a certain lady who had cancer for whom you had been praying? Yes, I replied. GOD said, I did not cause her to have cancer but when she learned that she had cancer her desire was to glorify ME through her cancer. HE said, only eternity will reveal the number of doctors, nurses, friends, relatives and visitors who were influenced by her witness during her time of fighting cancer. It was much like being a martyr.

When she died, I met her and wrapped my arms around her and said, “Well done, MY good and faithful servant.” We turned and walked down the streets of gold which were lined with the saints cheering that she had remained faithful and that she had overcome. Then HE asked me, “Would you deny that for anyone?” I said, “No!”

More goes on in heaven than we know. The words of the Apostle Paul come to mind in 1 Corinthians 2:6-10 which allude to things yet to be made known.

1 Corinthians 2:6-10:

6 However, we do speak a wisdom among the mature, but not a wisdom of this age, or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7 On the contrary, we speak God’s hidden wisdom in a • mystery, a wisdom God predestined before the ages for our glory. 8 None of the rulers of this age knew this wisdom, for if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 But as it is written: What eye did not see and ear did not hear, and what never entered the human mind— God prepared this for those who love Him. 10 Now God has revealed these things to us by the Spirit, for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.  

I believe what we as Christians know about eternity with GOD, through faith in CHRIST and the Bible, is only a drop in the bucket of what it will be like when we get to heaven. If we think earth is beautiful, no one has seen, heard or even in their wildest imagination thought of what heaven is like. There are no human words to describe it.

A friend of mind was pronounced dead after he had been in the hospital for several days following an automobile accident. He was a seminary student. His body was moved to the basement of the hospital for the funeral home to pick up. A nurse passing by his body happened to see his eyelid move and she immediately began to resuscitate him. During that period of time he was pronounced dead, HE went to heaven. He told me that he saw many things but there were no human words to describe what he saw.

This life will soon pass but eternity is forever. Obedient service for the LORD is what will last in heaven. No one likes to suffer. Did Job suffer without questions? No. Let’s continue.

We all experience suffering, even those who seek after good.

Let’s read Job 30:26-31: (Job pleads his case to GOD. These verses are a portion of a speech Job began in Job 29:1.)

25 Have I not wept for those who have fallen on hard times? Has my soul not grieved for the needy? 26 But when I hoped for good, evil came; when I looked for light, darkness came. 27 I am churning within and cannot rest; days of suffering confront me. 28 I walk about blackened, but not by the sun. I stood in the assembly and cried out for help. 29 I have become a brother to jackals and a companion of ostriches. 30 My skin blackens and flakes off, and my bones burn with fever. 31 My lyre is used for mourning and my flute for the sound of weeping.

Job reminds GOD of how he has reached out to others in the name of GOD during their time of need. Now, he is in need but it seems as if no one will help him. Even You, GOD, have abandoned me in my time of need. Job felt like he had become a dreaded disease to others and those who could help him have turned their backs on him, even GOD. In his condition, Job’s only companions were animals. The musical instruments that used to make merry music now play only sad mournful, death music.

Hope for deliverance is gone. Darkness had overtaken him. He desired light but got darkness. Many have felt like this and during these times hope and trust in GOD is our strength. During these times Job spoke honestly with GOD.

Let’s consider Job 32:1-6: (Elihu)

1 So these three men quit answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. 2 Then Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite from the family of Ram became angry. He was angry at Job because he had justified himself rather than God. 3 He was also angry at Job’s three friends because they had failed to refute him and yet had condemned him. 4 Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were all older than he. 5 But when he saw that the three men could not answer Job, he became angry. 6 So Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite replied: (Go to the Bible to read Elihu’s reply.)

The young man Elihu responded to Job’s friends and to Job. Elihu is one of the possible writers of the Book of Job. In Chapter 38, GOD spoke to Job and bombarded him with questions. In Chapter 40, GOD demands that Job answer all of HIS questions. This continued to Chapter 42 where we see that Job replies to the LORD and reality comes into focus for Job.

We cannot understand why we are suffering but we can know that GOD is sovereign.

Let’s read Job 42:1-2:

1 Then Job replied to the Lord:

 2 I know that You can do anything and no plan of Yours can be thwarted. 3 You asked, “Who is this who conceals My counsel with ignorance?” Surely I spoke about things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.

Background leading up to verse 1:

Job had demanded an audience with GOD. Job’s desire was to explain himself to GOD and he hoped that GOD would in turn tell him why he was suffering. Job got his audience with GOD but GOD did not provide a satisfactory explanation to him. Instead GOD challenged some of Job’s demands and pointed out to Job that HE alone is GOD. HE is sovereign and as such HE did not have to explain Himself. The Spiritual light of GOD began to dawn on Job. Job had been seeking an explanation for his plight instead of seeing GOD as sovereign and in control of all things in the universe. GOD’S plans are designed to accomplish a purpose beyond human comprehension, unless revealed to humans by GOD. When this truth dawned on Job, he responded to GOD by calling HIM “Yahweh” which is the personal, covenant name of GOD. This reveals that Job began to see GOD differently and more intimately. Job saw GOD as the true light, with whom he had built a personal relationship which could never be done be worshipping false gods. Job confessed that Yahweh is GOD and has the right and power to act as GOD. We see that Job’s attitude toward GOD had changed in verse two.

Verse 3 is a quotation of verse 2 from Job 38:1-3 (1 Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind. He said: 2 Who is this who obscures My counsel with ignorant words? 3 Get ready to answer Me like a man; when I question you, you will inform Me.)

In this scripture, Job, in essence, told GOD that HE was correct. What human would dare question or attempt to cover up GOD’S plans when, in fact, mere humans had no clue what they were talking about because they are finite and GOD is infinite. Job acknowledged to GOD that he, Job, did not know what he was talking about. GOD’S ways, thoughts and plans were beyond his comprehension. Job was building trust in GOD because he recognized that GOD was in control of all matters including the plans and efforts of humans, Satan and his demons.

Christians are not to remove themselves from the protective circle of GOD. Having the right relationship with GOD through CHRIST is vital in building and maintaining an intimate relationship with GOD.

Bottom line, Job saw that GOD had his best interest in mind even when GOD allowed these challenging things to come into his life. When bad things come into our lives we tend to lash out at GOD, when we should draw closer to HIM. That takes Spiritual maturity.  

We can experience the presence of GOD even in the midst of suffering, which should lead us to repent and draw closer to GOD.

Let’s read Job 42:4-6:

4 You said, “Listen now, and I will speak. When I question you, you will inform Me.” 5 I had heard rumors about You, but now my eyes have seen You. 6 Therefore I take back my words and repent in dust and ashes.

Job had asked for an audience with GOD. Verses 1-3 are a confession and opens the way to repentance as expressed in verses 4-6. Job repeated what GOD had stated in Job 38:3 “Get ready to answer Me like a man; when I question you, you will inform Me.” Job wanted an audience with GOD and GOD had granted it. GOD wanted Job to listen carefully to what HE had to say to him.

Notice that GOD, in essence, told Job earlier, “Since you know so much, I am going to ask you questions and you will give ME the answers.” In verse 5, Job confessed that he had depended upon others telling him about GOD but now he knew GOD personally and intimately, through relationship. Job was at peace with GOD. Job sees truth and when he compared himself to GOD he saw his faults and doing so led him to repent.

The Hebrew word used for repent is “nacham” which is different than the typical Hebrew word used for repent “shub” which in essence means to turn around from the direction you are going. Nacham carries the idea of “to breathe heavily” such as to “a sigh of grief” or “a sigh of relief.” It comes across to me that Job was saying, “finally I get it.” “It has been a long, hard process but I understand it. It was worth it because I now know GOD as I have never known HIM, HE is real and HE is truth.”

Suffering can either draw us closer to GOD or drive a wedge between us and GOD. Blessings!!!

Bible Study – Questions (5) – How Did We Get Here and Why? – February 16, 2014

This is lesson five (5) in our series entitled “Questions People Ask.”

Our scripture is Genesis 1:1-27.

The Universe is here because GOD spoke.

The scientific community has their idea of how it all came into being and the Bible reveals GOD’S truth. If you read chapter one of Genesis and think about each step you will see that what GOD created on day one was necessary to support what HE did on day two. What HE created on day two was necessary to support what HE did on day three and so forth.

The number one truth is that we are here! GOD made us with the freedom to rationalize and choose. Yes, I believe science plays an important role because we live in a physical universe of which GOD is sovereign.

GOD Spoke the Universe into Existence.

Let’s read Genesis 1:1-27:

The Creation

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Step one, GOD created something from nothing. HE created substance from nothing by speaking. The big bang was GOD’S voice, just kidding.

 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

This is ground zero. The earth was formless, empty, dark and watery. Notice that the Spirit of GOD was hovering over the surface of the waters. When an engineer or scientist builds something so intricate that once he or she launches it, they will check and double check every detail to make certain all systems are ready. This is the idea behind the word “hovering.” GOD was checking it out to make certain all was in place for this special place we call earth. Once HE was sure, HE said in verse 3 ---

3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

It is interesting that the Hebrew word used for “light” here is different from the Hebrew word used for “light” used in verses 14-18. They have the same Hebrew root word:

Hebrew Word:‏ אוֹר‎ ('owr) – used in verses 3 and 4.

Hebrew Word: ‏מְאוֹרָה‎ - Transliteration: m ^eʾôwrâh

Phonetic Pronunciation: meh-o-raw' – used in verses 14-18.

4 God saw that the light (('owr) was good,

To me there was a pause after GOD created light in verses 3 and 4, which I think was the sun but possibly of different size and intensity than the sun we know and observe today.

If you think of a watery, muddy mass being exposed to one side of the light, what would happen? It would dry out the section exposed to the light. I believe there was no rotation at this point. Do I know that for certain, NO! But let’s follow the process. But if you look at a flat map of the world, you can observe that it seems you can place pieces of the continents together like a puzzle back into its original mass.  We see in the next portion of scripture (4b):

n and God separated the light from the darkness.

In my opinion that was when GOD created the rotation of the earth, giving earth exposure to both light and darkness. The centrifugal (to force things out) and centripetal (to hold things in) were shaping the watery, muddy mass of earth and established balance as earth rotated. If GOD can speak things into existence, why did HE use physics? In HIS wisdom, HE used the law of physics which apply to physical materials. 

 5 God called the light “day,” and He called the darkness “night.” Evening came and then morning: the first day.

GOD defined time for us. GOD is eternal and timeless. Humans need time because they are not eternal and the laws that apply to the physical universe are necessary for sustaining life. They were put into effect because of the foreknowledge of GOD. That is, GOD knew how mankind would choose but that foreknowledge did not predispose mankind to make the choice it did. Thus mankind would be in a fallen state after disobeying GOD.

Keep in mind Ephesians 1:4:

 4 For He chose us in Him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in His sight. In love

I contend that GOD had every person ever to be conceived in HIS mind before HE created earth. Therefore, not to follow through with HIS plan to form human life would have terminated the existence of all humans.

6 Then God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters, separating water from water.” 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above the expanse. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse “sky.” Evening came and then morning: the second day.

The second day established defined order which continues under the command of GOD.

9 Then God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land “earth,” and He called the gathering of the water “seas.” And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, “Let the earth produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds.” And it was so. 12 The earth produced vegetation: seed-bearing plants according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 Evening came and then morning: the third day.

We know that hydroponic farming produces vegetation and products. Vegetation also helps to stabilize dry ground. The cycle of reproduction was set into motion. Plants and trees produce seed bearing fruit. The seeds in turn produce additional plants and trees. Vegetation and animal life need the right light.  

14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night. They will serve as signs for festivals and for days and years. 15 They will be lights in the expanse of the sky to provide light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made the two great lights—the greater light to have dominion over the day and the lesser light to have dominion over the night—as well as the stars. 17 God placed them in the expanse of the sky to provide light on the earth, 18 to dominate the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 Evening came and then morning: the fourth day.

As mentioned earlier, I think the light here is the same light as stated in verses 3-4 but at this point in creation, GOD resized the sun to accommodate life upon earth. Do I know for sure? No, but one day we will all know. [But ponder this – When HE resized the sun portions of it were scattered and it formed other galaxies.]

Now back to the sun, moon and stars. Vegetation was flourishing upon earth but animal life had not been created.

Bottom line, the fact is that we are alive upon earth. Earth is our self-sustaining space station rotating at 25,000 miles per hour with its own atmosphere and environment orbiting the exact light source, the sun. A few degrees change in the intensity and distance of the sun in reference to our space station (earth) would mean disaster. Earth has the exact mixture of gases in the atmosphere to sustain life and temperatures and seasons to produce food. Yet, many say there is NO GOD. It just all came about by random probability.

A friend of mine, years ago, was hosting a group of communist who did not believe in GOD and they asked him “How can you people in America believe in GOD.” His reply was excellent. He asked them, “If you had all the parts of a fine Swiss watch and placed them into a bag and shook them in the bag, would they ever come together as a fine Swiss watch?” They said, “No!” He said, “Then how can you conclude that the universe, earth, life and all that we can see came together by random probability?”  GOD tells us to look around and you will see HIS handiwork which reaches out to you with a language of love. It speaks but has no voice. GOD’S ultimate love for each of us is when GOD allowed HIS only Son, JESUS, to come to earth, to live as a human and give HIS life so that all who place their faith in HIM will have eternal life.

The fifth day begins.

20 Then God said, “Let the water swarm with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.” 21 So God created the large sea-creatures and every living creature that moves and swarms in the water, according to their kinds. He also created every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 So God blessed them, “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters of the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.” 23 Evening came and then morning: the fifth day.

Animal life began in the water and then the birds. We can only imagine life upon earth during this time period. GOD had not formed man at this point in time but HE had put the things in motion for mankind’s use.

The sixth day begins.

24 Then God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that crawl, and the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. 25 So God made the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and creatures that crawl on the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

Earth was functioning such that human life could be sustained.

26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.”

Who is “Us”? It is GOD: The Father, The Son (JESUS) and The Holy Spirit. The Apostle John confirmed that JESUS was present and actually created the world – John 1:1-5:

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 Life was in Him, and that life was the light of men. 5 That light shines in the darkness, yet the darkness did not overcome it.

What does “in Our image, according to Our likeness” mean? Here is where I differ with a number of Bible teachers. The prophet Moses wanted to see GOD’S glory – Exodus 33:18-23:

18 Then Moses said, “Please, let me see Your glory.” 19 He said, “I will cause all My goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim the name • Yahweh before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” 20 But He answered, “You cannot see My face, for no one can see Me and live.” 21 The Lord said, “Here is a place near Me. You are to stand on the rock, 22 and when My glory passes by, I will put you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with My hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take My hand away, and you will see My back, but My face will not be seen.”

In the Garden of Eden, as recorded in Genesis 3:8-9:

8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and they hid themselves from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 So the Lord God called out to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”

We need to add Exodus 3:13-14:

13 Then Moses asked God, “If I go to the Israelites and say to them: The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ what should I tell them?” 14 God replied to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.” Some translations have “I AM WHO I AM and I will be WHO I will be.”

GOD is omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent. HE is sovereign and exercises absolute authority over all creation and circumstances. At times HE intervenes into circumstances and there are times HE chooses not. We get angry with HIM when things do not go the way we want them.

What are these verses telling us? GOD has a face, hands, legs, voice, eyes, feeling and the list goes on. GOD is also Spirit. Keep in mind that GOD said “I AM WHO I AM!”

GOD Created People in HIS Own Image.

Let’s continue reading Genesis 1:27:

 27 So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female.

As any loving Father, HE created humankind in “HIS own image.”

Let’s read Genesis 2:7 and 20-25 for more insight into the formation of male and female:

7 Then the Lord God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.

20 The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal; but for the man no helper was found as his complement. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place. 22 Then the Lord God made the rib He had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 And the man said: This one, at last, is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called “woman,” for she was taken from man. 24 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh. 25 Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame.

This gives us another look at GOD forming male and female. Does a male have one less rib than the female? No! GOD took a body part from the male and made the female. It was an intimate, personal moment. GOD made male and female in an intimate, personal relationship with GOD as eternal beings with the freedom to choose.

Why didn’t GOD just take some dusk from the ground and form the female? When woman sinned, man could have stated that GOD made her different. So GOD took a body part from the male to make the female. HE took a body part from man’s side to indicate HIS purpose for woman was to come along side the male as his helpmate. They are co-equals.

28 God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.” 29 God also said, “Look, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the surface of the entire earth and every tree whose fruit contains seed. This food will be for you, 30 for all the wildlife of the earth, for every bird of the sky, and for every creature that crawls on the earth—everything having the breath of life in it. I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 God saw all that He had made, and it was very good. Evening came and then morning: the sixth day.

Later in Genesis, we read that the couple lost their eternal relationship with GOD at the instant they sinned. This sin condemned them and all of their off-spring to physical and eternal death but GOD had a plan to redeem them from eternal death, if they choose. The shed blood of a sacrificial animal was a place holder for those who were to be fully redeemed by the shed blood of JESUS when HE gave HIS life to pay in the full the penalty for sin. They were looking forward to the cross and we are looking back to the cross. Faith is CHRIST our redeemer means “salvation.”

The term “salvation” is to be saved from the penalty of sin, which is eternal death. Baptism of a Christian symbolizes the Christian’s death and burial of his or her old life and being resurrected to walk in his or her new life in CHRIST. Dear Father, open the eyes of all who read this to behold truth. YOU have wonderfully made us. Thank You for life but most of all thank You for eternal life through our LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. Bible Study – Questions – Why Should I Trust The Bible? – February 9, 2014

This is lesson four (4) in our series entitled “Questions People Ask.”

Our scripture is Psalm 119:1-8, 137-144.

The only safe place to build your life is on GOD’S Word, the Bible.

The Old Testament was written over 1,000 years and the New Testament over 60 years by one author: GOD but by many scribes. Those who study Old Testament prophesy, regarding the coming of the Messiah, and apply that prophesy to its fulfillment in the life of JESUS, it is undeniably true. The Bible is as relevant today as the day it was written. How can that be possible? The Holy Spirit makes it relevant. GOD is eternal and HE knows all that is going on not only what can be seen but what is going on in the hearts of mankind. Therefore, HIS guidance is beyond our ability.

I recall a story I read many years ago of a man who needed to know what to do about a certain situation and he thought he would use the Bible. He said he would just open the Bible randomly with his eyes closed and place his finger on a verse of scripture and do what it said. He did and his finger landed on “---- and he went out and hanged himself.” The man thought that was drastic and said he would do it again because that could not be correct. So he did and his finger landed on “-- what thou must do, do quickly.” The Bible is not to be used in this fashion but it is to be studied and applied to one’s life as revealed by the indwelling Holy Spirit.

GOD has preserved HIS Word, the Bible, over thousands of years. Those who seek guidance, enlightenment, understanding, application, wisdom and the list goes on, find it in the Bible. The more you read the Bible the more meaningful it becomes.

Let’s explore GOD’S Word!

We know that in Hebrews 4:12 we find:

12 For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the ideas and thoughts of the heart.

In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 we find:

16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

In John 1:1-5,

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 Life was in Him, and that life was the light of men. 5 That light shines in the darkness, yet the darkness did not overcome it.

14 The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the •One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John (the Baptizer) testified concerning Him and exclaimed, “This was the One of whom I said, ‘The One coming after me has surpassed me, because He existed before me.’”)

The author of Psalm 119 is not known but some Bible scholars suggest Ezra, the priest, David and a number of others. It is not as much as who wrote it but seeing the heart of the writer express what he had learned over the years by experiencing the presence of GOD in his life.

Each Christian who has walked with JESUS could write about his or her experience with GOD. Christians need to take Spiritual inventory or pray and ask GOD to search their hearts and reveal their true relationship with HIM. The search within often occurs when we read the Bible.

The Bible is a lamp to guide us through the dark times in our lives and a mirror which reflects our Spiritual growth and maturity. Our lives and relationship with GOD is still being formed and shaped but in the Bible we can see the beginning and end of people’s lives, GOD’S involvement in them, both good and bad, depending upon the choices they make. We can learn about GOD and HIS nature because HE says what HE means and means what HE says and utmost is that HE loves you and allowed HIS only Son, JESUS to give HIS life just for you.

When we study the Bible, we see the revelation of GOD and HIS involvement in the lives of people. Some read the Bible and see GOD’S wrath but fail to see the love of GOD in HIS wrath. HE always warned that bad things were going to happen if the people did not change their hearts as reflected in their lives toward HIM. HE patiently waited for the person or people to change. HE continued to warn him, her or them. We get to read the result.

When you study the Bible you read of the things that you should not do in order for you to live healthy and fulfilling lives upon earth in harmony and relationship with mankind and GOD. You read that every person is under an eternal death sentence because of original sin. But you also read about the extent of the love of GOD to redeem mankind by allowing HIS only Son, JESUS to come to earth, live as a human and give HIS life to redeem those who place their faith in JESUS from sin and death. Faith in CHRIST is every person’s opportunity for a second opportunity to have eternal life and live as GOD intended when HE first formed man. GOD did not make salvation complicated. It is simple “LORD JESUS please forgive me for my sins and come into my life.” So why is it so hard? Every human has an adversary, Satan, whose desire is for you to join him in Hell. The Bible has much to say about Hell and it is not a place that GOD wants any human to go. Hell was made for the devil or Satan and his angels. Is it real or just something to frighten people? It is real and while you are upon earth, it is your opportunity to avoid it but it requires a decision. What about children? They will go to Heaven. But the question you need to consider is where will you spend eternity? Focus upon you and not on the many questions that keep you from giving your life to JESUS.

If you wrote a poem to express your experience with GOD, what would you write?  Some may say, “It would not be pretty!” That is just what you need to write. Express to HIM all your disappointments and heart aches. Let HIM have it but when you do also listen, read HIS Word, the Bible and give HIM an opportunity to respond and reveal truth.

Psalm 119 is the longest of all the Psalms. It is a love poem written about the Law of GOD. It was written in poetic form. It is written in acrostic style which means that it was written such that each stanza begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Using the English alphabet, the first stanza would begin with the letter A and then each of the lines within that stanza would also begin with the letter A. The second stanza would begin with the letter B. Psalm 119 has 22 separate stanzas, with eight lines in each stanza.

When we understand the love of GOD for us, it is then we begin to see in our hearts the kind of relationship GOD desires to have with each person – Father/son/daughter or husband/wife. For those married and love their spouses intently, they do not want to share them with anyone else. That is the relationship GOD desires to have with each of us because HE is jealous. When we chase the things that block or compromise our relationship with HIM, it hurts GOD to HIS very core. When we recognize the thing or things that compromised our relationship with GOD and confess it and repent, GOD forgives and restores. So what happens when we repeat it or them? We confess it and ask GOD to forgive us. Keep in mind that HE knows the intent of our hearts. We will not con GOD.

All Christians are sinners saved by grace. Grace is GOD’S gift to those who accept CHRIST as his or her Savior. Now that is Good News!

Let’s explore how the psalmist sees GOD based upon his experience with GOD!

Let’s read Psalm 119:137-144:

137 You are righteous, Lord, and Your judgments are just. 138 The decrees You issue are righteous and altogether trustworthy. 139 My anger overwhelms me because my foes forget Your words. 140 Your word is completely pure, and Your servant loves it. 141 I am insignificant and despised, but I do not forget Your precepts. 142 Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your instruction is true. 143 Trouble and distress have overtaken me, but Your commands are my delight. 144 Your decrees are righteous forever. Give me understanding, and I will live.

The writer was expressing what he had experienced by having an intimate relationship with GOD. Having such a relationship is not exclusive to him but is available to everyone. Let’s explore what he concluded. He saw the love of GOD through his experiences with GOD. He listed the attributes of GOD and his experiences:

-         You are righteous, Lord, and Your judgments are just. Life brings tough experiences but the psalmist had come to the conclusion that GOD could be trusted. GOD did not have a hidden agenda to do him harm but HE had his best interest in mind in HIS decrees.

-         The decrees You issue are righteous and altogether trustworthy. Because GOD has your best interest in mind, you can trust and rely upon what HE reveals to you through HIS Word and/or in your heart.

-         My anger overwhelms me because my foes forget Your words. The psalmist sees that if his enemies would only be obedient to GOD, their lives, his life and the world would be much better.

-         Your word is completely pure, and Your servant loves it. The psalmist rejoiced in the truth of GOD’S Word and delighted in it because it could be trusted.

-         I am insignificant and despised, but I do not forget Your precepts. In comparison to GOD, the psalmist considered himself insignificant and despised by his enemies but GOD’S Word restored his sense of value and worth. GOD’S precepts or properly appointed principles guide those who obey them through life.

-         Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your instruction is true. GOD is eternal, consistent and HIS instructions can be trusted. GOD is the beginning and the end.

-         Trouble and distress have overtaken me, but Your commands are my delight. When life brought trouble and distress, GOD’S Word rekindled his relationship with GOD and renewed his trust that GOD was in charge. We have to practice in the dark what we learn in the light.

-         Your decrees are righteous forever. Give me understanding, and I will live. The psalmist acknowledges that GOD’S Word is eternal and his desire was to understand it and continue to apply it in his life. It is one thing to read and understand GOD’S Word but it is quite another to put HIS Word into practice. 

These verses represent the heart of the psalmist.

Now let’s go back to the opening verses Psalm 119, which are directed to the community of believers.

Let’s read Psalm 119:1-8:

1 How happy are those whose way is blameless, who live according to the Lord’s instruction! 2 Happy are those who keep His decrees and seek Him with all their heart. 3 They do nothing wrong; they follow His ways. 4 You have commanded that Your precepts be diligently kept. 5 If only my ways were committed to keeping Your statutes! 6 Then I would not be ashamed when I think about all Your commands. 7 I will praise You with a sincere heart when I learn Your righteous judgments. 8 I will keep Your statutes; never abandon me.

It seems to me that the psalmist is hanging onto GOD and he is fearful that GOD will abandon him. Christian friends, what a heritage we have in CHRIST. GOD will never leave us or forsake us. We belong to HIM for eternity. The psalmist longed for what we have in salvation through faith in CHRIST.

Living in right relationship with GOD through JESUS equals happiness. Christians have the indwelling Holy Spirit to empower, enlighten, assure, lead, guide, confirm and so much more, as they journey through life. That does not mean that those who are in right relationship with GOD through faith in JESUS will have smooth sailing through life. The Apostle Paul stated it well in Romans 8:12-17:

12 So then, • brothers, we are not obligated to the flesh to live according to the flesh, 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 All those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “• Abba, Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children, 17 and if children, also heirs —heirs of God and coheirs with Christ—seeing that we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

The psalmist wrote this long before the passion of CHRIST. The psalmist’s audience was the community of believers and their relationship with GOD depended upon their ability. So what was the message to the community of believers, let’s consider, as we review the list below:

(As you read these verses think of the great heritage Christians have as the result of placing their faith in CHRIST. JESUS paid the price for sin and broke the sin barrier that separated mankind from GOD. CHRIST fulfilled the law when HE gave HIS life upon the cross. We are no longer under the law but the law is still present as a measuring stick.)

-         4 You (GOD) have commanded that Your precepts be diligently kept. Precepts refer to principles or commands given by GOD as general rules of action for those HE loves and cares for. HIS precepts are to be kept diligently.

-         5 If only my ways were committed to keeping Your statutes! The psalmist longed to have the assurance, empowerment and confirmation given to Christians by the indwelling Holy Spirit.

-         6 Then I would not be ashamed when I think about all Your commands. The palmist longed to have that assurance of his worth and acceptance to GOD to embolden him to live for GOD and to reach out to others in the name of GOD. The psalmist thought of all he had to do to be acceptable to GOD and it overwhelmed him because he saw how far short he came in being fully obedient to GOD.

-         7 I will praise You with a sincere heart when I learn Your righteous judgments. The psalmist did not feel that he was good enough to approach GOD. What a heritage Christians have in CHRIST – Romans 8:14-15 - All those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons (and daughters). 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “ • Abba, Father!”

-          8 I will keep Your statutes; never abandon me. The psalmist was clinging to GOD and fearful that GOD would abandon him. Deuteronomy 31:8 - Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.” In our humanness we fail but when we have the right relationship with GOD through CHRIST we are triumphant in CHRIST.

Consider the solid assurance GOD has given to all who have placed their faith in CHRIST and build your life upon the solid rock of JESUS as revealed in the Bible:

2 Corinthians 5:21:

21 He (GOD) made the One (JESUS) who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we (those who place their faith in JESUS) might become the righteousness of God in Him.

John5:24:

24 “I assure you: Anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.

1 John 4:13 - 13 This is how we know that we remain in Him and He in us: He has given assurance to us from His Spirit.

Romans 8:16 - 16 The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children,

2 Corinthians 1:22:

22 He has also sealed us and given us the Spirit as a down payment in our hearts. (GOD has sealed us and claimed us as HIS own by giving us a security deposit in our hearts. Christians are HIS!!!)

Do you belong to GOD through faith in CHRIST? If not, now is the moment. Ask JESUS to forgive you for your sins and ask HIM to come into your life. If you did, then thank HIM. Begin your new relationship with CHRIST by reading the Bible. I suggest the Gospel of John. Talk with CHRIST and ask HIM to open your Spiritual eyes to truth and teach you. It is an awesome journey.
