Bible Study - One Another - Agree with One Another - Genesis 13 and Romans 12 and 15 - August 28, 2011

Bible Study – One Another – Agree with One Another – August 28, 2011

This is our final lesson in our series entitled “One Anothering.”
Our scripture is Genesis 13:1-12; Romans 12:16-18; 15:5-6.

In our series of study, we have considered love for one another, forgive and don’t criticize one another. It is fitting to conclude with “agreeing with one another.” But it is not agreeing that a wrong is a right. It is agreeing to resolve an issue that does not compromise the fundamentals of the Christian faith. It is keeping and maintaining unity among Christians regarding controversial, non-fundamental matters. Do we agree to not be disagreeable on these matters and focus on what GOD is leading us to accomplish for HIM? It takes a strong person to choose something that is less than ideal to maintain a relationship, harmony or peace. Again, this is not rolling over on fundamental matters or principles. We cannot avoid disagreements but the key is how we respond to disagreements. Can we keep a cool head and work toward a resolution that will glorify GOD and build unity?

Let’s explore.
Let’s read Genesis 13:1-7: (My inserts)
Abram and Lot Separate
1 Then Abram went up from Egypt to the • Negev (NEH gehv)—he, his wife, and all he had, and Lot with him. 2 Abram was very rich[1] in livestock, silver, and gold. 3 He went by stages from the Negev to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had formerly been, 4 to the site where he had built the altar. And Abram worshiped[2] the LORD there. 5 Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks, herds, and tents. 6 But the land was unable to support them as long as they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they could not stay together, 7 and there was quarreling between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. At that time the Canaanites (KAY nuhn ights) and the Perizzites (PEHR ih zights) were living in the land.

GOD called Abram to follow HIM from Ur, which is in the area we know today as Iraq. Ur was a flourishing civilization. Those in Ur worshipped idols. When the true GOD revealed Himself to Abram, he obeyed HIM and journeyed with his father, Terah, along with his wife, Sarai and his nephew, Lot, to Haran. Terah worshipped other gods, the moon-god being one. Haran was where the moon-god was worshipped.

When his father died, Abram journeyed to Canaan by faith. He took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot with him. They stayed in several different places in Canaan. A famine came to that area and he took his family to Egypt to buy food.

He took Sarai and Lot with him and he told those with whom he came in contact that Sarai was his sister. This was not a blatant lie because she was his half-sister. But he was looking out for his own skin because Sarai was a beautiful woman and he feared being killed if the Egyptians knew he was her husband. It paid off for him because the Pharaoh took her with the intension of making her his wife. Pharaoh treated Abram well – sheep, cattle, donkeys, servants and camels. GOD intervened by causing a plague on Pharaoh’s family. This resulted in Pharaoh chastising Abram for not telling him that Sarai was his wife and sent him back to Canaan with all his possessions.

This brings us to the beginning of our scripture. Abram and Lot had stuff and livestock and they returned to Negev (NEH gev) from Egypt. Then they went in stages to Bethel and finally to an area between Bethel and Ai. Abram and Lot both had herds of livestock and soon it was obvious that they would soon overgraze the area. The herdsmen of Abram and Lot began to argue over grazing rights. This came to the attention of Abram and Lot who discussed the matter. Also, in that area there were others, the Canaanites and Perizzites, who had herds that needed to graze.

Abram and Lot had a problem that needed a solution before it escalated into a bigger problem. Someone had to address the matter. The herdsmen of Abram and Lot could not because they did not have the authority. So the matter, rightfully, fell upon the shoulders of Abram and Lot.

Abram was called by GOD to travel to a land that HE would show him. This anointed Abram with special purpose and authority. So would he use this authority to dictate to Lot what to do? Let’s explore.

Let’s read Genesis 13:8-12:
8 Then Abram said to Lot, “Please, let’s not have quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, since we are relatives.[3] 9 Isn’t the whole land before you? Separate from me: if [you go]* to the left, I will go to the right; if [you go]* to the right, I will go to the left.” 10 Lot looked out and saw that the entire Jordan Valley as far as[4] Zoar was well-watered everywhere like the LORD’s garden[5] and the land of Egypt. This was before God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. 11 So Lot chose the entire Jordan Valley for himself. Then Lot journeyed eastward, and they separated from each other. 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, but Lot lived in the cities of the valley and set up his tent near Sodom. 13 Now the men of Sodom were evil, sinning greatly[6] against the LORD.

Abram took the lead to resolve the matter. He could have just told Lot what to do but instead he wanted to settle the matter without hard feelings. He wanted to maintain his relationship with Lot and his family. Abram saw the matter as something that could negatively impact their relationship and their relationship was more valuable than whose herd grazed where.

Abram states that their bond was blood because they were blood related as a family. Christians are related to each other through the shed blood of JESUS. Christians are the family of GOD through the miracle of rebirth. As Christians, we also have the responsibility to work out our differences before they reach an explosive stage.

Abram told Lot to look out at all the land that was available to both of them and there was no need for grazing to be an issue. I think it was interesting and very wise that Abram told Lot to choose the direction he wanted to take his herds and family and he would go in the opposite direction. Neither would stay put but both were relocating. That took out of the mix the potential for one to feel like the other had won the argument.

Lot looked out and saw the lush fertile Jordan valley which happened to be in the direction of Sodom. The scripture is quick to point out that this was before GOD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. The old saying that all that glitters is not gold applies here. Lot must have thought that if Uncle Abram was giving him first choice, he would choose what he thought was best for him and his family. We know from the rest of the story that it cost Lot his wife, all that he had and resulted in an incest relationship when his daughters got him drunk and had sex with him.

So often we think getting a new job or relocating to a new area will bring us more happiness and it may for awhile. Then reality hits us and we see that it might not have been the right thing to do but we are locked into that lifestyle. GOD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, which forced Lot and his family to leave.

Let’s read Roman 12:16-18; 15:5-6:
16 Be in agreement with one another. Do not be proud; instead, associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own estimation. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Try to do what is honorable in everyone’s eyes. 18 If possible, on your part, live at peace with everyone.

The Apostle Paul began chapter 12 writing about a Christian being a living sacrifice. In essence, die to self. A living sacrifice considers others above himself or herself.

Paul stated in verse 16 that Christians are to be in agreement with one another. This is not compromising on the basic fundamentals of Christianity. It is agreeing not to allow your differences on nonessential matters to result in disunity. Unity is important to not only the Christian community but to the surrounding community of non-believers.

Paul continued:

Do not be proud. Paul was not referring to personal pride but to the attitude of thinking only of oneself. That is a Christian who thinks of himself or herself before considering others. Put others first.

Instead associate with the humble. The use of the word “humble” carries the idea of “lower classes” that is those that some circles consider less important or social outcasts.

Do not be wise in your own estimation. This reflects the attitude of the heart. Do things my way because any other way does not measure up.

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Paul expounded on this in Romans 12:19-21 - 19 Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead, leave room for His[2] wrath. For it is written: Vengeance belongs to Me; I will repay,[3] says the Lord. 20 But If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him something to drink. For in so doing you will be heaping fiery coals on his head.[4]21 Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good.
Try to do what is honorable in everyone’s eyes. I like the word “try.”

If possible, on your part, live at peace with everyone. Again, Paul used the words “if possible.” These Christian attributes are difficult to impossible, in my opinion, without the Christian having the right relationship with CHRIST. That is allowing CHRIST to live life through him or her. This is a yielding of self or dying to self for this to happen. The process of sanctification is designed to develop Christians through Spiritual growth and maturity to have the attitudes that Paul was describing. In our own strength, it is impossible.

The idea behind Paul’s remarks was directed toward keeping and maintaining unity with a loving attitude. There was one common cause, reaching a lost world with the message of salvation through JESUS CHRIST. In order to do that effectively, Christians must be in harmony and unified in this effort but not to compromise the fundamentals of the gospel. Agree you can disagree on the non-fundamentals but focus on the mission.

Let’s read Romans 15:5-6:
5 Now may the God of endurance and encouragement grant you agreement with one another, according to Christ Jesus, 6 so that you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ with a united mind and voice.

The lives and attitudes of Christians should reflect the life of JESUS because of the miracle of rebirth. When the lives of Christians are in harmony or in the right relationship with CHRIST, they will glorify GOD the FATHER of the LORD JESUS CHRIST. That was the ministry of JESUS to glorify HIS FATHER. That is the mission of Christians as well by allowing the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT to make and mold them into the image of CHRIST.

The Christian life is only possible to the extent he/she allows CHRIST to live through him/her. The power of the HOLY SPIRIT is vital for Christians to live as GOD desires for them to live.

This is our last study in this series “One Anothering.” How Christians live impacts others either positively or negatively. Our flesh can wreak havoc but when we allow the HOLY SPIRIT to control our lives, then, we become a sweet smelling fragrance to GOD and others around us without getting the big head. Blessings.

Bible Study - One Another - Don't Criticize One Another - James 4 and Romans 14 -August 21, 2011

Bible Study – One Another – Don’t Criticize One Another – August 21, 2011

This is lesson three (3) in our series entitles “One Anothering.”
Our scripture is James 4:11-12 and Romans 14:1-12 and 19.

Criticizing one another is an area with which most Christians struggle. Our flesh raises its head when a fellow Christian or non-Christian is getting accolades from others, especially when we have been involved in the matter and not recognized where the praise is given. We may know that the person being praised did nothing except show up or would have quit if it had not been for us.

Often, we do not want to be praised but if praise is being given, we want our share. This is a natural human response. Sometimes our only satisfaction may be that we know that GOD knows the truth.

Criticizing is a form of judgment. We establish ourselves as the standard and measure others according to that standard. Criticism can be constructive or destructive. The right criticism is intended to be helpful for a person to improve and do better. Our lesson will focus on criticism that tears down a person and generally occurs behind his/her back.

Our first scripture comes from the Book of James. James was the half-brother of JESUS. It is interesting to see the change of heart that the brothers of JESUS had toward HIM during HIS ministry and after HIS death and resurrection. Truth exposes false assumptions.

Let’s look at John 7:1-5:
The Unbelief of Jesus’ Brothers
1 After this, Jesus traveled in Galilee, since He did not want to travel in Judea because the • Jews were trying to kill Him. 2 The Jewish Festival of Tabernacles[1][2] was near, 3 so His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea so Your disciples can see Your works that You are doing. 4 For no one does anything in secret while he’s seeking public recognition. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 (For not even His brothers believed in Him.)

Brothers can be brutally honest with one another and JESUS’ brothers were no exception. They were critical of their brother, JESUS. In essence, they were saying, gee, you are the big man on the block and you, of all people, are not going to this festival? The festival will fall apart if you are not there. Can you see a bit of jealousy because JESUS was so popular? They knew that he did works that caused the people to flock to him. (Lower case used on purpose because they saw him as an earthly brother with some sort of special abilities and not as the SON of GOD. This was good because it revealed HIS humanity. We know that JESUS was 100% human and 100% divine. HE was tempted in all ways as we are tempted. As a human, he was capable of sinning but his relationship with his FATHER resulted in him remaining obedient. Could this have been an occasion where he/HE was tempted to reveal to HIS brothers HIS true identity? HE had to trust HIS FATHER to reveal truth to HIS family at the proper time.)

Let’s consider the attitude of HIS brothers after HIS death, burial and resurrection. We get a glimpse in Acts 1:4-14:

The Holy Spirit Promised (Ascension of CHRIST into heaven after HE was raised from the dead.)

4 While He was together with them,[1] He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father’s promise. “This,” [He said, “is what]* you heard from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So when they had come together, they asked Him, “Lord, at this time are You restoring the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or periods that the Father has set by His own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends[2]of the earth.”
The Ascension
9 After He had said this, He was taken up as they were watching, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 While He was going, they were gazing into heaven, and suddenly two men in white clothes stood by them. 11 They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you have seen Him going into heaven.”
United in Prayer
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olive Grove, which is near Jerusalem—a Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 When they arrived, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. 14 All these were continually united in prayer,[3] along with the women, including Mary[4] the mother of Jesus, and His brothers.

WOW!!! What happened to HIS brothers? I believe HIS sisters were included in the statement “along with the women.” They saw HIM as the Promised Messiah. They saw HIM as their SAVIOR. They had to accept HIM as their SAVIOR just like the rest of us, including HIS mother. James became the leader of the Christian church in Jerusalem. HIS brothers continued to spread the Good News of the Gospel of CHRIST as recorded in 1 Corinthians 9:5 - 5 Don’t we have the right to be accompanied by a Christian wife, like the other apostles, the Lord’s brothers, and • Cephas (Peter)?

The Apostle Paul met with JESUS’ brother, James, after his conversion on the road to Damascus as recorded in Galatians 1:18-19 - 18 Then after three years I did go up to Jerusalem to get to know • Cephas (Peter),[8] and I stayed with him 15 days. 19 But I didn’t see any of the other apostles except James, the Lord’s brother.

Let’s read James 4:11-12:
11 Don’t criticize one another, brothers. He who criticizes a brother or judges his brother criticizes the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is one lawgiver and judge[5] who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?

The Book of James was written like a sermon to motivate the hearts of Christians to apply what they were hearing. Christians should put into action what they were being taught, that is, be doers of the word and not hearers only.

In this scripture, James was addressing Christians who criticized fellow Christians. This not to be confused with going to a fellow Christian who is following a lifestyle of sin to offer him/her help and to pray for him/her. This is talking behind his/her back and tearing him/her down.

James was saying, those who criticize a fellow Christian were establishing themselves as the standard over and above GOD’S standard. Those who criticize are judging others based upon their notions of right and wrong. They have become both the law and the judge which elevates them to be on the same level as GOD. They needed to think what they were doing when they criticized fellow Christians.
The word “criticize” means “to speak down” or to “slander” or “insult” another person. It is speech that is hurtful, untrue or both. To criticize also carries the idea “to judge.” It was tearing down others with words, especially when they were not present to defend themselves. In essence, James was saying before you criticize a brother or sister in CHRIST; take a long hard look at your own life. Do you walk the talk?

When James wrote of the law, he likely had the royal law in mind as he wrote in James 2:8 - 8 If you really carry out the royal law prescribed in Scripture, Love your neighbor as yourself,[1] you are doing well. This comes from Leviticus 19:18, which JESUS had quoted. There is only one judge, GOD. JESUS said it best as recorded in Matthew7:1-5 - 1 “Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged. 2 For with the judgment you use,[1]you will be judged, and with the measure you use,[2]it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the log in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and look, there’s a log in your eye? 5 Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

This will help as we explore our next scripture.

Let’s read Romans 14:1-4:
The Law of Liberty (Freedom as a Christian.)
1 Accept anyone who is weak in faith,[1] but don’t argue about doubtful issues. 2 One person believes he may eat anything, but one who is weak eats only vegetables. 3 One who eats must not look down on one who does not eat; and one who does not eat must not criticize one who does, because God has accepted him. 4 Who are you to criticize another’s household slave? Before his own Lord he stands or falls. And stand he will! For the Lord is able[2] to make him stand.

The Apostle Paul was addressing an important issue among the Christians in Rome. The issue was mainly between the Jews and the Gentiles regarding what Christians should eat or not eat and observing special days.

Those raised in the Jewish religion, before becoming a Christian, thought one way and the Gentiles thought another. This resulted in disunity among the Christian community. Paul had to deal with differences of opinion. The key word is “opinion.” It is important for Christians to search the scriptures to determine what GOD considers right and wrong (sin). Even here one must be careful. In the Old Testament there were restrictions about eating or not eating certain foods. But if we follow GOD’S word regarding these restrictions we see a change. We learn this from Peter’s vision in Acts 10:9-15: (My insert)

9 The next day, as they (the group was coming to ask Peter to come with them to Gentile territory) were traveling and nearing the city, Peter went up to pray on the housetop at about noon.[2] 10 Then he became hungry and wanted to eat, but while they were preparing something he went into a visionary state. 11 He saw heaven opened and an object coming down that resembled a large sheet being lowered to the earth by its four corners. 12 In it were all the four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth, and the birds of the sky. 13 Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat!” 14 “No, Lord!” Peter said. “For I have never eaten anything common[3] and unclean!” 15 Again, a second time, a voice said to him, “What God has made clean, you must not call common.” 16 This happened three times, and then the object was taken up into heaven.

If GOD’S Word does not make a distinction and declares something wrong, then it becomes an opinion. Some Christians may be led by the HOLY SPIRIT to abstain from certain things. This does not mean every Christian will have the same conviction about an opinion. We must keep in mind that these were not moral issues or absolutes. The Jewish Christians in Rome ate meat, but they were concerned about eating meat not ceremonially clean or prepared according to Jewish customs. They were still connected to the Jewish ceremonial laws regarding food.

This was the concern of the Christians in Rome, which was different from the concern that the Christians had in Corinth regarding eating meat. In Corinth, the Christians were concerned with eating meat which had been offered to idols. Some Christians saw nothing wrong with it whereas others did.

The key regarding controversial or non-moral matters, if a Christian believes something is wrong then he/she needs to live accordingly and abstain. Christians must keep in mind that when GOD identifies sin, it is sin for all.

Why shouldn’t all Christians have to live by the same opinion? Some people would want to dictate their way of living to others. GOD gives Christians the freedom to live as HE directs their lives. HE will never lead HIS children to violate what HE has declared a sin. The key is, what is the HOLY SPIRIT revealing to you regarding certain controversial areas or areas of opinion? When the HOLY SPIRIT leads you to abstain from certain things, then follow your conviction as HE leads you. But just because you are led to abstain does not mean that everyone should abstain. Again, keep in mind these are areas not declared to be sin by GOD.

Differing opinions have resulted in various doctrinal differences thus the creation of various denominations – Baptist, Catholic, Church of Christ, Church of God, Episcopal, Freewill, Lutheran, Methodist, Pentecostal, Presbyterian and the list goes on.

Paul considered those who did not see anything wrong with eating meat strong. In fact, he considered himself strong. But by the same token, those who abstained from eating meat considered themselves strong. Paul told those who ate meat not to look down on those who did not eat meat or observe special days. By the same token, those who abstained from eating meat were not to look down on those who did.

Paul prompted them to consider who was their boss? Both groups are accountable to GOD. If one group was wrong, GOD would deal with them and lead them to follow truth. Since, GOD has not done that then each Christian must depend upon the leadership of the HOLY SPIRIT to lead him/her to make a decision regarding these controversial matters.

Let’s read Romans 14:5-12 and 19-23:
5 One person considers one day to be above another day. Someone else considers every day to be the same. Each one must be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 Whoever observes the day, observes it to the Lord.[3] Whoever eats, eats to the Lord, since he gives thanks to God; and whoever does not eat, it is to the Lord that he does not eat, yet he thanks God. 7 For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. 8 If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9 Christ died and came to life for this: that He might rule over both the dead and the living. 10 But you, why do you criticize your brother? Or you, why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.[4] 11 For it is written: As I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow to Me, and every tongue will give praise to God.[5]12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

Paul reminded both groups that whatever they did it was for the glory of GOD and for them to build a relationship with HIM. If they were in a lifestyle that prevented that then they needed to change. Christians needed to keep in mind that in the end, each will stand before GOD and be accountable to HIM. Christians will not stand before GOD regarding their salvation because their salvation is secure in CHRIST (John 5:24). But Christians will be accountable before GOD regarding their obedience. They will stand before HIM regarding their rewards as recorded in 1 Corinthians 3:10-15. Therefore, ask the HOLY SPIRIT to search your hearts and lead you to truth and how you are to decide regarding these controversial issues. Here we need to be careful that we do not force what we want to do as coming from the HOLY SPIRIT, when in reality; it is our desire and not HIS.

A Christian’s desire is to obediently serve GOD. CHRIST came to earth to bring salvation to all who would believe in HIM and doing so equips them with the HOLY SPIRIT, WHO leads them to truth and how to live. Christians are accountable to HIM.

Verse 19-23:
19 So then, we must pursue what promotes peace and what builds up one another. 20 Do not tear down God’s work because of food. Everything is clean, but it is wrong for a man to cause stumbling by what he eats. 21 It is a noble thing not to eat meat, or drink wine, or do anything that makes your brother stumble.[6] 22 Do you have faith? Keep it to yourself before God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23 But whoever doubts stands condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith, and everything that is not from faith is sin.

In essence, Paul was saying, get a life and stop bickering about these controversial issues. They do nothing but cause you to focus on the mundane and fail to be about serving GOD. Disunity not only harms your relationship with each other, it also sends a bad message to the non-Christian community. The greatest sin that both groups commit is criticizing one another. It is not whether or not you eat meat, drink wine or observe special days. Whatever your decision is regarding these issues, keep them to yourselves when you are around those who think differently.
If these issues cannot be resolved, then those who have the freedom to eat meat, drink wine or not observe special days, then for the sake of the weak, then abstain to maintain unity. To those who are strong, it is a noble thing to consider your brother who believes it is a sin for him to eat meat, drink wine or not observe a special day. For his sake then abstain, even though you have the freedom.

If a Christian believes in his/her heart that something is wrong, he/she should not do it. GOD is likely keeping HIS child from something that can harm him/her due to his/her physical, chemical or psychological makeup.

Christians do influence others by what they consider okay to do from a social point-of-view – do they drink alcoholic beverages, smoke a little pot, smoke, do a little gambling and the list goes on.

Bible Study - One Another - Forgive One Another - Colossians 3 and Philemon - August 14, 2011

Bible Study – One Another – Forgive One Another – August 14, 2011
This is lesson two (2) in our series entitled “One Anothering.”
Our scripture is Colossians 3:12-13; Philemon 8-22.

Our focus in this lesson is on forgiveness. To forgive someone of something they have done to you is very difficult. I have heard of family members being mad at each other for years and don’t recall why they were mad at each other.

The Apostle Paul was under house arrest in Rome for two (2) years. During this time he wrote four letters, known as the Prison Epistles. The letters were Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians and Philemon. The focus of these letters was on the person of CHRIST and Christian living. Christians represent the love of CHRIST to a lost world. Godly love in believers is vital because it lets them and others know they have been born-again. It also bonds them with their brothers and sisters in CHRIST. GOD loved them so much that HE allowed HIS ONLY SON, JESUS, to come to earth to live as a human. CHRIST gave HIS life to pay the sin debt each person owes. Because of agape love flowing from GOD through CHRIST to all who believe, HE expects HIS children to show this love toward their fellow brothers and sisters and others. Christians must keep in mind the GOD hates sin but loves the sinner.

As we have been discussing, to arrive at the point of loving as CHRIST loves us is achieved through the process of sanctification. It is the renewing of the mind and dying to self as Christians build an intimate relationship with CHRIST and yield to the working of the HOLY SPIRIT in their lives. Salvation begins this process and opens the way for building a personal relationship with GOD through CHRIST.

This sets the foundation for the ability to forgive. As Christians comprehend what CHRIST did for them in forgiving their sins, which were so great, they must also forgive a brother or sister in CHRIST of the small things, in comparison.

Let’s read Colossians 3:1-11: (Background leading to our focus scripture. Notice the word “therefore,” which links what Paul had written to the point he was making. He was dispelling distortions of the gospel taught by false teachers.)

The Life of the New Man
1 So if you have been raised with the • Messiah, seek what is above, where the Messiah is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on the earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with the Messiah in God. 4 When the Messiah, who is your[1] life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. 5 Therefore, put to death whatever in you is worldly:[2] sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, God’s wrath comes on the disobedient,[3] 7 and you once • walked in these things when you were living in them. 8 But now you must also put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his practices 10 and have put on the new man, who is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of his Creator. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian,[4] slave and free; but Christ is all and in all.

Regardless of your nationality, race, slave or free, when you asked CHRIST to forgive you of your sins, believed that HE died for you upon the cross, believed that GOD raised HIM from the dead as proof that HIS death paid the price for all of your sins, thus conquering sin and its consequence, death, there is nothing else you have to do to be a Christian. You have the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT, WHO confirms that you are GOD’S child – which leads into verse 12.

Let’s read Colossians 3:12-13:
The Christian Life
12 Therefore, God’s chosen ones, holy and loved, put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, 13 accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so also you must [forgive]* . 14 Above all, [put on]* love—the perfect bond of unity. 15 And let the peace of the Messiah, to which you were also called in one body, control your hearts. Be thankful. 16 Let the message about the Messiah dwell richly among you, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, and singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

The Apostle Paul had used the illustration of taking off your old life like you would take off dirty clothes and putting on clean clothes. When a person accepts CHRIST as his/her SAVIOR, HIS blood washes him/her whiter than snow. Do you recall 2 Corinthians 5:22 - 21 He (GOD) made the One (JESUS) who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. The shed blood of JESUS washes away all sin – past, present and future – true Christians are made pure and put on the righteousness of CHRIST. And, as such, they can come into the very throne room of GOD, their heavenly FATHER, and call HIM, Daddy.

GOD chose all people before the foundations of the world to be restored to the original relationship HE intended through CHRIST. Some have chosen HIM but others have rejected HIM by rejecting CHRIST. So when Paul stated they were chosen, they had fulfilled GOD’S desire for them because they had chosen CHRIST. Have you chosen CHRIST as your SAVIOR? If not, please do so right now.

Paul continued his message to the Christians in Colosse by reminding them of the attributes of the fruit of the HOLY SPIRIT produced in their lives – compassion, humility, gentleness and patience - accepting one another. Then he gets to the heart of the problem for many Christians – forgiving one another, just as CHRIST has forgiven you.

In essence, Paul was saying consider the huge debt of sins that GOD has forgiven you through CHRIST and compare that to the small things that a fellow Christian or non-Christian has done to you. As you have been forgiven, also, forgive.

It is interesting that the Greek word Paul used for “forgive” is the verb form of the word for “grace.” It carries the idea of showing favor even toward those who antagonize us. This is very hard to do in your own strength and I believe it is only possible through the intimate relationship Christians have with CHRIST. When a Christian has the right relationship with CHRIST, by being grafted into the vine (CHRIST), then HIS nature flows through him/her to others.

Forgiving is a hard thing to do. That is why Paul reminded the Christians in Colosse that they were saved by grace and they should extend grace to others. Grace is unmerited favor. The person does not deserve it and is incapable of earning it. It is a free gift. Besides my SAVIOR and LORD, JESUS, I think of my wife.

An unforgiving nature is a barrier toward unity. Love conquers bitterness and unforgiveness. Love is the cement that bonds people together. I know some reject that love and what can one do? Love him/her whether or not he/she returns that love - very hard to do. Only through CHRIST can that be done.

Paul was telling the Christians then and us today to focus upon the love that GOD and CHRIST had for them and rejoice in that knowledge by accepting and forgiving others. It is the power of the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT that brings healing to your minds and hearts such that you can truly be thankful for knowing that you have been forgiven and you, in turn, forgive others.

We move to the application of forgiveness in our next scripture.

First the lead-in scripture: (The Apostle Paul was writing a personal letter to his friend and fellow Christian Philemon – Apphia was likely Philemon’s wife and Archippus was likely his son. Paul mentions Archippus in Colossians 4:17 - 17 And tell Archippus, “Pay attention to the ministry you have received in the Lord, so that you can accomplish it.” Paul was under house arrest in Rome.)
Greeting

1 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy, our brother: To Philemon, our dear friend and co-worker, 2 to Apphia our sister,[1] to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church that meets in your house. 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philemon’s Love and Faith
4 I always thank my God when I mention you in my prayers, 5 because I hear of your love and faith toward[2] the Lord Jesus and for all the saints. 6 [I pray]* that your participation in the faith may become effective through knowing every good thing that is in us[3] for [the glory of]* Christ. 7 For I have great joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.

Onesimus (Oh NESS ih muhs) had been a slave of Philemon (Figh LEE muhn) but had run away and connected with Paul in Rome. Paul led him to CHRIST and had talked him into returning to his master, Philemon. Paul mentioned Onesimus in his letter to the Christians in Colosse – Colossians 4:7-8 - 7 Tychicus, a loved brother, a faithful servant, and a fellow slave in the Lord, will tell you all the news about me. 8 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know how we are,[1] and so that he may encourage your hearts. 9 He is with Onesimus, a faithful and loved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you about everything here.

Paul trusted the delivery of three (3) letters, Ephesians, Colossians and Philemon, to Tychicus and Onesimus. The first letter was delivered to the Christians in Ephesus. They then traveled some 130 miles home to deliver Paul’s letter to the Christians in Colosse and for Onesimus to deliver Paul’s letter to Philemon.

Let’s read Philemon 8-16:
An Appeal for Onesimus
8 For this reason, although I have great boldness in Christ to command you to do what is right, 9 I appeal, instead, on the basis of love. I, Paul, as an elderly man[4] and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus, 10 appeal to you for my child, whom I fathered[5] while in chains—Onesimus.[6] 11 Once he was useless to you, but now he is useful to both you and me. 12 I am sending him—a part of myself[7]—back to you.[8] 13 I wanted to keep him with me, so that in my imprisonment for the gospel he might serve me in your place. 14 But I didn’t want to do anything without your consent, so that your good deed might not be out of obligation, but of your own free will. 15 For perhaps this is why he was separated [from you]* for a brief time, so that you might get him back permanently, 16 no longer as a slave, but more than a slave—as a dearly loved brother. This is especially so to me, but even more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.[9]

Paul was appealing to Philemon as a fellow laborer for CHRIST. He knew the heart that Philemon had for reaching those in need of CHRIST. So he appealed to him, as a true believer, to treat Onesimus, now a new Christian, as he would anyone else who had done something wrong, repented, asked for forgiveness and sought to be restored.

It is interesting that a runaway slave found Paul in Rome. But he did and Paul led him to CHRIST. GOD is always at work to bring salvation to those who seek HIM. The HOLY SPIRIT led him to minister to Paul, so Paul could minister to him.

Onesimus running away had a divine purpose – salvation for Onesimus, help for Paul and an opportunity for Philemon to show forgiveness to Onesimus as CHRIST had forgiven him. We know the character of Philemon based upon Paul’s description and see the trust that Paul had in his Christian maturity that he would do right by Onesimus. It was an opportunity for Philemon to put what he knew Spiritually into action.

Paul did not mince words regarding Onesimus. He acknowledged that Onesimus was useless to Philemon at the time he escaped. However, he knew that at one time Onesimus had been very useful to him. Onesimus means “useful.” Paul stated that since Onesimus had become a Christian, his life had changed. He was useful to Paul and would also be useful to Philemon.

It seems that there was contention between Onesimus and Philemon and that is why Onesimus left. Now that Onesimus was a brother in CHRIST, this could restore their relationship on a different level. His running away was GOD’S way of not only saving him Spiritually but also of restoring to Philemon, as a fellow Christian and productive worker. He would again be useful to him because his service would come from a changed heart and attitude, not because he was a slave.

Paul was saying, in essence, if you can accept him back it would not only make me know you have the right heart but more especially you will reap the joy for forgiving him and restoring him as a brother in CHRIST. Your relationship with him will be a common bond through CHRIST.
It is tough to forgive. As Christians, when we forgive it restores our relationship not only with the person with whom we have a problem but with our LORD. There is unity and harmony.

Let’s read Philemon 17-22:
17 So if you consider me a partner, accept him as you would me. 18 And if he has wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. 19 I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it—not to mention to you that you owe me even your own self. 20 Yes, brother, may I have joy from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ. 21 Since I am confident of your obedience, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. 22 But meanwhile, also prepare a guest room for me, for I hope that through your prayers I will be restored to you.
Paul was pleading the case for Onesimus to be forgiven and restored not as a slave but as a brother in CHRIST. What may have gone through Philemon’s mind, after-all Onesimus was an investment? Would he set him free and lose that investment or consider him as a slave and treat him accordingly? What would you have done?
Paul made a heartfelt plea for Philemon to accept him back and treat him as a brother and not to hold what he had done against him. If Onesimus owed him money, then Paul would pay him, with a quick caveat that Philemon owed Paul a debt.
Paul again, in essence, was saying, so make me proud by restoring Onesimus as your brother in CHRIST and not holding anything against him because he has truly been born-again. He is a changed person and you will see that when he returns to you. You need him as much as he needs you. So make me proud by doing what you know in your heart you should do, as a mature Christian.

Paul topped off his words with the statement that “knowing that you will do even more than I say.” It seems to me that Paul’s last statement, in essence was, just in case you have any hesitation in doing the right thing, I plan to come visit you when I get out of prison. I am planning to make sure you treat Onesimus as you should.
I can see the concern that Paul had for Onesimus. He had talked him into doing the right thing by returning to Philemon and he wanted it to be a positive encounter for both of his brothers in CHRIST. Restoration was the goal. Onesimus would not have to be on the run for the rest of his life and it would bring healing to his and Philemon’s relationship.

Is there someone you need to forgive? Forgiveness is the first step toward reconciliation. Don’t harbor unforgiveness in your heart. It will rob you of your joy in CHRIST.

Bible Study - One Another - Love One Another - John 13, 1 John 3 and 1 John 4 - August 7, 2011

Bible Study – One Another – Love One Another - August 7, 2011

We begin a new series of study entitled “One Anothering” as in “Love One Another”, Forgive One Another”, “Don’t Criticize One Another” and “Agree with One Another.” Unity of the living body is important but not to the extent that Christians condone or overlook bad behavior in fellow believers. But it is important that Christians be honest with each other and deal with issues to avoid letting them fester and grow.

Our scripture of today’s lesson is John 13:34-35; 1 John 3:10-12, 16-18; 4:7-13, 19.
We just completed a five (5) week study of the “freedom” Christians have in CHRIST. Christians are free to love or not love one another. Christians are to love the sinner but hate the sin.

Unity is important in the living body of CHRIST, the church. This is not the brick and mortar churches. It is the true church, which is made up of those who are true born-again believers in CHRIST. True Christians are members of the brick and mortar churches. This includes members of the institution of the church who are seeking a relationship with CHRIST or at various stages of Spiritual growth and maturity within the church.

It is difficult to love in our own strength. That is why Christians must have and be in the right relationship with CHRIST. When they are in the right relationship, they are grafted into the vine of CHRIST and produce the fruit of the Spirit. The first attribute of the fruit of the Spirit is love. It is love for fellow Christians, love for those seeking a relationship with CHRIST and those oblivious to the message of CHRIST.

Let’s read John 13:34-35: (JESUS was nearing HIS crucifixion and HE was speaking to HIS disciples to prepare them for the times when HE would no longer walk with them physically.)
34 “I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

JESUS was speaking to HIS disciples who included Judas, who would betray JESUS, and Peter, who would deny JESUS. JESUS had already expressed the need to love others, so what was new about this commandment? It was to love one another as HE loved. HE gave HIS life for them and the world. They would only understand this command after HIS crucifixion, resurrection, ascension and being indwelled by the HOLY SPIRIT. Agape love speaks loudly to fellow Christians and non-Christians alike without uttering an audible word. It reaches into the hearts of those lost in sin and makes them thirst for the love of CHRIST. It reaches into the hearts of fellow believers who have lost their zeal to serve their LORD.

When Christians bicker, gossip, cheat one another, stab each other in the back so-to-speak and the list goes on, it sends the wrong message to others. Unity in CHRIST’S love is vital. HIS love is produced as a result of being grafted into the vine and HE produces fruit through us. It is vital to have the right relationship with HIM and when Christians are in right relationship, they reflect the love of GOD which is in them.

The Apostle John wrote the Gospel of John, as well as, three (3) letters which are titled, first, second and third John and the Book of Revelation.

Let’s read 1 John 3:10b-12, 16-18: (The Apostle John wrote a pastoral letter to several Gentile congregations to reassure Christians in their faith and to counter false teachings.)
10 This is how God’s children—and the Devil’s children—are made evident.
Love’s Imperative
Whoever does not do what is right is not of God, especially the one who does not love his brother. 11 For this is the message you have heard from the beginning: we should love one another, 12 unlike Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered[6] his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil, and his brother’s were righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers. The one who does not love remains in death. 15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
Love in Action
16 This is how we have come to know love: He laid down His life for us. We should also lay down our lives for our brothers. 17 If anyone has this world’s goods and sees his brother in need but shuts off his compassion from him—how can God’s love reside in him? 18 Little children, we must not love in word or speech, but in deed and truth;

In essence, the Apostle John was saying to his readers, if you want to recognize a true Christian versus a person acting like a Christian, then look at their love quotient. We all know of people who have a lot of love but are not Christians. What is the source of a person’s love? Is it love as the world defines it or as CHRIST lived it? CHRIST was consistent in HIS love for all - Those who hated HIM and those who loved HIM. CHRIST gave HIS life for those who hated HIM, as well as, those who would love HIM by accepting HIM as their SAVIOR and making HIM LORD of their lives.

John was saying look at a person’s fruit or actions. Look at what happened between Cain and Able. Cain became jealous of Able and solved that jealous rage by killing Able. This happens today. A mother kills her daughter’s rival or used-to-be friends are targeted because their new group of friends dislikes this person’s used-to-be friend. That is not the love CHRIST has and it is not the love of a true Christian.

A word of caution - those who desire to deceive Christians know the language of Christians. Pray for discernment when you encounter folks that speak the Christian jargon, especially when they are using their supposed walk with CHRIST to sell you something, get you to donate, or looking for a handout. I am not saying not to help anyone in need but be careful.

In verses 12-15, the Apostle John was addressing the attitude of the heart. What springs from an unconverted heart versus a heart that has been changed through CHRIST by the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT? The measure is the love you have toward your fellow brothers and sisters in CHRIST.

The measure of a Christian’s love toward others is measured by the love that CHRIST has for them. HE gave HIS life for each Christian. When GOD opens our eyes to a need, we are to respond. Christians are to put their love into action as led by the HOLY SPIRIT. Christians are not to make others dependent upon them by enabling them in bad habits or lifestyle but to help them to be able to be able to function as a person and most especially as a Christian.

Let’s read 1 John 4:7-13, 19:
Knowing God through Love (My inserts)
7 Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves (As CHRIST loved) has been born of God and knows God (Because they have been born-again and indwelled by the HOLY SPIRIT). 8 The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 God’s love was revealed among us in this way:[3] God sent His • One and Only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the[4] propitiation[5] (The perfect atoning sacrifice) for our sins. 11 Dear friends, if God loved us in this way, we also must love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God.[6] If we love one another, God remains in[7] us and His love is perfected in us. 13 This is how we know that we remain in Him and He in us: He has given to us from His Spirit. 14 And we have seen and we testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses[8] that Jesus is the Son of God—God remains in him and he in God. 16 And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him. 17 In this, love is perfected with us so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; for we are as He is in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment.[9] So the one who fears has not reached perfection in love. 19 We love[10] because He first loved us.

Love is the measure of a Christian’s relationship with GOD through CHRIST. The kind of love that John is writing about cannot come from the human heart; it has to come from a heart that has been redeemed by the blood of The Lamb, CHRIST. It is a natural love coming from a changed life. The love that a child has for a loving parent is natural. A child does not have to generate love for his/her parent(s). It comes as the result of being their child. More closely is the love that a mother has for her child. The mother has bonded with the child because she has cared for the child. Fathers who care for their children develop that same bond with the child and most often the children bond with the fathers.

Now, I realize that in this day and time that not all parents and children have this natural love for each other. It is a shame. So you may not be able to relate because you had a bad relationship with your parent or parents. Just know that GOD is the source of love and HE revealed this love through CHRIST. HIS love for you is unconditional. CHRIST gave HIS life for you because HE first loved you. HIS part has been completed and your part is to respond to that love by accepting HIM as your SAVIOR.

Verses 9 and 10 – All people were dead in their sins and GOD knew that. People were oblivious to that fact. GOD could have remained silent and let people go their own way and be eternally separated from HIM. GOD knew that one day there would be judgment day and HE would be the judge. Love compelled HIM to reveal the way from sure eternal death to sure eternal life. That way was not through the law or jumping through hoops to appease HIM.

GOD reached down to all people by allowing HIS ONLY SON, JESUS, to leave HIS home in heaven to come to earth and live as a human. JESUS was willing to come to earth because HE also loved us. JESUS was willing to leave HIS Glory in heaven and live as a human who was subject to being tempted in all ways as a human. HE knew that HIS mission was to live a perfect, sinless life, to fulfill the law so that HE would be the acceptable sacrifice to atone for the sin of mankind.

As a result of JESUS living as a human and living a sinless life, HE became the atonement or perfect sacrifice for sin to remove the wrath GOD had for sin. The love of GOD, Who imposed the sentence, also provided the full and complete pardon through HIS ONLY SON, JESUS, for all who would believe. Adam had committed the original sin and CHRIST paid the price for that original sin that resulted in the penalty of death. CHRIST’S death, the shedding of HIS blood, removed the barrier of sin that separated GOD from mankind.

GOD made mankind free to choose. HE did not make them robots. Therefore, GOD does not force a person to accept CHRIST but HE does lead him/her to the point of choosing CHRIST or rejecting HIM. HE has made it clear that CHRIST is the atoning sacrifice for mankind for all who will accept HIM as their SAVIOR. The choice is yours. How will you choose? I pray that you will choose CHRIST and eternal life. If you reject HIM, you are choosing eternal death - Hell. Yes, I believe Hell is a real place and you do not want to be there. Some may say but I will be with my friends. That is Satan’s lie. You will be in a place of torment because you rejected the love of CHRIST.

Verse 11 – Since Christians know that GOD loved them in this way, they are in turn to love their fellow brothers and sisters in CHRIST. GOD did not discriminate and neither should Christians toward fellow Christians. GOD’S love is the common bond between Christians.

Verse 12 – No one has ever seen GOD. The world has seen CHRIST who is GOD incarnate. JESUS’ disciples wanted to see GOD. JESUS told them, when they looked upon HIM, they saw GOD. As born-again Christians, when others see us, they see GOD. Now that is heavy. It is through the process of sanctification and the renewing of their minds that HIS agape love is perfected in Christians.

Verse 13 – How do Christians know that this life changing work is going on in their lives? It is through the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT.

Verse 14 to 19 – Just as JESUS willingly came to earth to reveal GOD, Christians are to reveal GOD to others, as they obediently serve HIM. Christians are to put their faith into action as led by the HOLY SPIRIT. As GOD’S love is perfected in Christians, it is their assurance that they are GOD’S children and do not fear judgment day.

The Apostle John recorded the words of JESUS in John 5:24: (My insert)
24 “I (JESUS) assure you: Anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.

JESUS gives believers assurance of salvation, which is confirmed by the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT. All who believe in CHRIST are secure in HIM for eternity.

The following scripture supports the function of the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT to assure Christians have eternal security here upon earth:

2 Corinthians 5:5:
5 And the One who prepared us for this very thing is God, who gave us the Spirit as a down payment.

GOD does not want HIS children to question their salvation, so HE gives them the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT as down payment as a security deposit. I know I wanted this assurance before I took the step of faith to accept CHRIST as my SAVIOR. It does not work that way. Take the step of faith to receive CHRIST as your SAVIOR and then the HOLY SPIRIT comes into your life.

2 Corinthians 1:22:
22 He has also sealed us and given us the Spirit as a down payment in our hearts.

The HOLY SPIRIT seals our salvation until Christians are glorified, which is the moment they see JESUS.

Ephesians 1:14:
14 He is the down payment[12] of our inheritance, for the redemption of the possession,[13] to the praise of His glory.

GOD gives Christians the HOLY SPIRIT as a down payment so they know that they belong to HIM and will be fully redeemed the moment they see HIM.

Ephesians 4:30:
30 And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit, who sealed you[17] for the day of redemption.

Christians are sealed until the day of redemption which occurs when we meet JESUS. Christians can grieve the HOLY SPIRIT by making light of the treasure they have in them or through disobedience by rejecting the urging of the HOLY SPIRIT to respond to GOD’S call. Christians must keep in mind that obedience to GOD equals rewards. GOD, as any loving father, loves to give good gifts to HIS children. When the HOLY SPIRIT urges a Christian to respond to something GOD desires for him/her to do and he/she refuses and refuses and refuses it blocks the communication between that person and GOD. It is a form of rejection. I want to live life as I choose. That is your choice but when you do, you lose what GOD had planned for you. The Christian can grieve the HOLY SPIRIT as can the non-Christian. For the Christian, it is loss of heavenly rewards but for the non-Christian it is the loss of eternity with GOD and CHRIST.

Romans 8:16:
16 The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children,

The HOLY SPIRIT, The third person of the Trinity, confirms within our hearts that we are Christians and belong to GOD as the result of salvation through CHRIST, plus so much more – comforter, teacher, guide, assurer, revealer, protector, empowers, enlightens, convicts of sin, leads those seeking CHRIST to HIM, leads Christians to witness and confess CHRIST as LORD, leads Christians to explore and understand the depths and mysteries of GOD, to pray for Christians when they do not know how to pray, produce the fruit of the Spirit in a Christian’s life, transforms the mind and builds the loving relationship with CHRIST. These are a few attributes of the HOLY SPIRIT. HE reveals the love of GOD and CHRIST and manifests this love to all who believe in CHRIST.

The measure of our love for GOD can be seen in our love for our true brothers and sisters in CHRIST. Do we love one another?

GOD loves us whether or not we love HIM. Human love expects something in return. GOD loves us unconditionally and as HIS children, HE expects the same from us toward others. I think this is impossible without having the right relationship with CHRIST and fully empowered by the HOLY SPIRIT. That is why Christians must walk in the Spirit/live in the Spirit. For Christians living in their own strength this is overwhelming. Paul said it best, “We must die to self.” That is why CHRIST must live through us and we abide in HIS strength.
