Casual Christianty - Live Your Faith - James 1:19-25; 2: 14-26 - November 1, 2009

Bible Study – Casual Christianity – Live Your Faith – November 1, 2009

This begins a new series of study in the Book of James. The series is entitled “Confront Casual Christianity.”

We will be in the book of James for the next five (5) weeks.

Our scripture is James 1:19-21, 22-25; 2:14, 18-26.

The letter of James was written to both believers and those who claim to be believers emphasizing the importance of faith and works. James was the half brother of JESUS. James was the head of the Christian church in Jerusalem. James did not believe that his brother JESUS was the true Messiah until after HIS crucifixion and resurrection. The Apostle Paul met with James several years after his conversion experience.

Casual Christianity is such an important topic to study. I know my journey with the LORD focused on being a casual Christian for most of my early life. I simply did not want to be known as a religious fanatic. James helps us to explore the concept of works and faith. In my opinion, when the HOLY SPIRIT leads and guides believers, HE gives balance to our spiritual growth and maturity.

Often, people desiring to be religious serve faithfully in the church or some religious organization thinking that doing so will earn them the right to go to heaven. This was not the works James was discussing in his letter. James did not want those who thought they were Christians not to be deceived into thinking they were Christians when they were not. The works that James addresses are works of obedience and led by the HOLY SPIRIT. Christians must be called by GOD to serve. Non-believers working in the church or a religious organization have the opportunity to be exposed to the truth but they must accept CHRIST as their SAVIOR to become a Christian. A believer may say, “I have fire insurance because I have accepted CHRIST, therefore, I am not going to hell. I don’t have to do anything else.” Fire insurance is better than no fire insurance but there is so much more when a believer obediently serves his/her LORD. Having the assurance of salvation brings peace to us. Even as born-again believers, we all build using materials that will not stand the test of fire. But when we obediently serve our LORD, there will be some materials which will stand the test of fire. Paul covers this in First Corinthians 3:11- 15.

The Bible is very clear that a person cannot earn his/her way to heaven. The Bible is also very clear that a believer does earn rewards as he/she obediently obeys the LORD, as HE directs. The key words are “As HE directs.” That is why it is vital to have the relationship with GOD through an intimate, personal relationship with CHRIST. Focus on getting to know CHRIST and letting HIM direct you through the leadership and prompting of the HOLY SPIRIT.

Our scripture this week will help form a foundation for next week’s study, James 1:2-18.

Let’s read James 1:19-21:

Hearing and Doing the Word
19 My dearly loved brothers, understand this: everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, 20 for man’s anger does not accomplish God’s righteousness. 21 Therefore, ridding yourselves of all moral filth and evil excess, humbly receive the implanted word, which is able to save you.[6] Lit save your souls

James, the half brother of JESUS, begins his letter in verse 1 by referring to himself as “a servant of GOD and of the LORD JESUS CHRIST. Then in verse 19, he refers to his fellow Christians as “dearly loved brothers (and sisters)”. This was a gracious opening followed by a stern “pay attention to what I am about to say.” He zeros in on the old adage, “The good LORD gave us two (2) ears and one (1) mouth, therefore, HE expected us to listen twice as much as we speak.” Christians are to listen, process and then speak after careful thought. When a believer flies off the handle it is never a good witness. However, there are times when it is okay to get angry.
It is okay when a believer gets angry at the things that make GOD angry. Such anger spurs a believer into action to do something about a certain matter or issue. Pure anger does not honor GOD.

James told his readers to make an honest assessment of their lives and ask GOD to help them get rid of the things that do not bring honor to HIM. Again, when believers have the right relationship with GOD through CHRIST, the HOLY SPIRIT searches their hearts and brings to mind the things that they need to work on. GOD never overrides a person’s will. It is always a person’s choice whether or not he/she is willing to yield to this process.

James made it clear that GOD’S Word is the power that can bring about change. Each person must look into HIS Word, seek truth and respond to the truth that is revealed. GOD’S Word is powerful and acts like a mirror reflecting a person’s very core, which results in that person seeing what he/she looks like spiritually and what needs to be worked on. The implanted Word of GOD does ITS’ work to bring about sanctification. When GOD does the work, we never become self-righteous. When the believer does the work, it often produces a self-righteous result. We are all sinners saved by grace!!! The closer we get to GOD and the more we get to know HIM, we see how sinful we are and see an even greater need for CHRIST in our lives.

In verse 21, James was urging his readers to take off their old way of life and put on the life of CHRIST. He compared it to taking off your old dirty clothes and putting on your new clothes of righteousness. James stated that GOD’S Word had been implanted in the believer when he/she received CHRIST as his/her SAVIOR. The true believer needs to take off his/her old life and to allow the righteousness he/she already has to be revealed.

James alludes to a process. If a believer already has the Word implanted in him/her, then when he/she reads GOD’S Word, then it acts like a spiritual mirror revealing his/her spiritual nature. When a believer’s true spiritual nature is revealed, when he/she looks into GOD’S Word, James tells his readers what needs to done in the next scripture.

Let’s read James 1:22-25:

22 But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 Because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his own face[7] Lit at the face of his birth in a mirror; 24 for he looks at himself, goes away, and right away forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom and perseveres in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer who acts—this person will be blessed in what he does.

James emphasized the need for believers to honestly look how they respond to GOD’S Word when they read or hear it. Does it move them to action or do they do nothing? The way a person responds is a spiritual barometer which can reveal whether or not he/she is a true believer.

In order for a person to live, he/she has to breathe in air and exhale. The process of breathing is vital to human life. The process of taking in GOD’S Word and putting it into action is vital for every believer’s spiritual health and confirms whether or not he/she has been born-again.

A mirror reveals good and bad. When a person looks into a mirror and sees a flaw or a problem and does nothing about it, it shows that looking into the mirror was futile. It reveals the heart and intent of the person. So merely reading or hearing GOD’S Word without the intent of learning and doing something about it is of no value.

GOD’S Word was written by GOD through many different authors many years ago. GOD’S Word is just as fresh and vital for leading all believers today as the day it was written. The HOLY SPIRIT translates HIS Word into application for living and serving today. Spiritual growth and maturity comes from on-the-job training. The training manual is HIS Word. We study it to learn more about GOD and CHRIST as the HOLY SPIRIT leads us to all truth. It is vital that all believers be led by the HOLY SPIRIT into obedient service.

Let’s read James 2:14, 18-26:

Faith and Works
14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith, but does not have works? Can his faith[4] Or Can faith, or Can that faith, or Can such faith save him?

James was urging his readers to not deceive themselves. A person can say he/she has faith but that does not mean he/she actually has saving faith. Here the word “faith” is tied to the word “belief.” Demons believe in GOD and they tremble.

Faith or belief is like a story I heard years ago and one you have likely heard as well. A tightrope walker (funambulists), Blondin, had a rope stretched across Niagara Falls. He walked the rope a number of times. He pushed a wheelbarrow across, walked blindfolded, carried a person on his back and walked on stilts crossing from one side to the other. I have heard that he often asked for a volunteer to allow him to carry him/her across. He turned to a spectator and asked him if he believed he could walk from one side to the other carrying a sack of potatoes. The spectator said, yes. Blondin then asked if he would allow him to carry him across, walking on the rope. The spectator refused. This is a good example of putting your faith or belief into action. We can intellectually believe or have faith but unless we put that faith or belief into action, it never comes to completion or proved. In other words, lip service does not cut it with GOD.

James was saying that intellectual faith or belief is not the kind of faith that saves you. A true believer puts his/her faith into action as led by the HOLY SPIRIT. I have asked people if they are a Christian and their response has been, “My parents were Christians or I came from a Christian home.” This is well and good but coming from a Christian home or being raised in a church does not make a person a Christian no more than kittens in an oven make them biscuits. Each person is accountable for his/her sins and must ask for forgiveness and ask CHRIST to come into his/her life. What makes a person a Christian is CHRIST in him/her and not the church he/she goes to. It is good to go to a Bible teaching church to grow after becoming a believer.

18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.”[5] The quotation may end here or after v. 18b or v. 19. Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith from my works.[6] Other mss read Show me your faith from your works, and from my works I will show you my faith. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. The demons also believe—and they shudder. 20 Foolish man! Are you willing to learn that faith without works is useless? 21 Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 You see that faith was active together with his works, and by works, faith was perfected. 23 So the Scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness,[7] Gn 15:6 and he was called God’s friend.[8] 2 Ch 20:7; Isaiah 41:8 24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And in the same way, wasn’t Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by a different route? 26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

James has created a hypothetical person. Some person may say “You have faith, and I have works.” Can faith be demonstrated without works? How do you show faith without some demonstration? James was saying that the only way a person can show faith is by action or works. I think these are works of faith as directed by GOD. When a believer is grafted into the true vine of CHRIST, he/she will produce fruit.

James is clear that the demons believe in GOD and they shutter or tremble. Demons cannot be saved but humans can be. GOD’S desire is for all to have saving faith but that requires a decision. It is more than intellectual consent that GOD or CHRIST exists; it is that because of CHRIST all humans have the opportunity to have saving faith.

James leads his readers to consider the faith of Abraham (Genesis 22:1-19) and Rahab the Gentile prostitute (Joshua 2:1-24). It was their faith that pleased GOD and confirmed the presence of GOD in their lives. James used Abraham, the father of the Jewish nation and Rahab, a Gentile prostitute to show that HE was no respecter of persons. HE looks upon the heart. Proof of what is in a person’s heart is demonstrated by obedient action to GOD’S commands. Those who have faith in HIM and respond accordingly were declared righteous by GOD. Their response was proof of their faith. That is why a person must choose whether or not to accept CHRIST as his/her SAVIOR and then obediently serve the LORD as HE leads by the HOLY SPIRIT.

Let’s look deeper. Abraham was on a life long journey of discovering GOD. The ultimate test and moment of growth and maturity came together when he would have sacrificed his only son Isaac. GOD gave him the test and also provided the ram for sacrifice. Abraham had the faith in GOD, that if he had sacrificed Isaac, which meant reducing Isaac to ashes, GOD would have raised him from the ashes. The point was Abraham’s heart and proof of his faith by being willing to sacrifice his only son.

Abraham was growing and maturing toward righteousness by his obedience to GOD. He was putting his faith into action, which was declared as righteousness.
Now consider what CHRIST did for all believers. The Apostle Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:21:

21 He (GOD) made the One (JESUS) who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Abraham had to journey through life and faced the ultimate test for any father in order to be declared righteous by GOD. Any person who believes in CHRIST as his/her SAVIOR is made righteous the instant he/she becomes a Christian. All of his/her sins are washed whiter than snow. Salvation is the beginning for all believers since CHRIST gave HIS life for them. Their Spiritual journey begins from a righteous foundation with GOD. Every believer’s journey is a process of sanctification and culminates when he/she meets JESUS face to face. With Abraham it was a struggle to be declared righteous by GOD, which required him to face sacrificing his only son.

Think about that for a minute. Abraham was declared righteous when he was willing to obey GOD and sacrifice his only son. His son, Isaac, was as good as dead. GOD had to stay his hand. Abraham had to make that decision. When people are faced with whether or not to accept CHRIST as their SAVIOR, their decision is whether or not they are willing to die to self or not. Just as Abraham chose to be obedient to GOD’S command and in doing so was deemed righteous, when people choose to ask CHRIST to forgive them of their sins and to come into their hearts, they are declared righteous by GOD because of what CHRIST did for all believers.

Rahab, the Gentile prostitute, believed in the GOD of the Israelites and acted upon her faith by saving the lives of the Jewish spies.

In verse 26, James tells his readers that faith without works is like the human body without a spirit. It is dead. A person who does not put his/her faith into action or works is spiritually dead. He/she needs to be born-again, spiritually.

Know Jesus - Hero Victorious - Mark 15 and 16 - October 25, 2009

Bible Study – Know Jesus – Hero Victorious – October 25, 2009

This is our final study in Mark.

Our scripture is Mark 15:1-5, 12-13, 32, 37-39; 16:1, 5-7.

We have journeyed with JESUS and HIS disciples through the Gospel according to Mark. The last few studies have focused on the last week of JESUS’ earthly ministry or Passion Week in Jerusalem, which was also Passover Week.

GOD’S timing is just awesome. During the very week when the Jews were celebrating Passover, the time when they were remembering and celebrating GOD’S deliverance of their forefathers from the bondage of Egyptian slavery, HIS ultimate plan for mankind was unfolding. During the week of Passover, GOD was delivering mankind from the bondage of sin and death through the death and resurrection of HIS ONLY SON JESUS. WOW!!! This would mark the end for a need to sacrifice animals for sin because the ultimate sacrifice would have been made.

In last week’s study, JESUS went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. HE asked the FATHER to allow this cup to pass from HIM but not HIS will be done but that GOD’S will be done. After such a prayer HIS mission, HE knew that all the events to follow, regardless of HIS opinion about them, would be according HIS FATHER’S plan and purpose. Therefore, HE did not have to second guess anything that happened to HIM. It was a done deal and HE remained obedient to the FATHER because HIS FATHER was in control. Was it easy? NO!!! JESUS was tested each step of the way even through the moments when HE gave up HIS SPIRIT for every believer.

This is the importance of prayer. When we are facing difficult times in our lives, we must pray. When GOD confirms that we are to go down a certain path according to HIS plan and purpose, we do not have to second guess what may come our way. HE is in control. Here is where a loving, intimate relationship with our FATHER, through CHRIST, is vital. When we encounter difficult times, GOD always goes through them with us and will provide the strength for us to endure. It is during these times that our trust and confidence must be in the FATHER and HIS leadership. Coming through such difficult times helps build an even more secure relationship with CHRIST.

Believers have the knowledge that even if they blow it, as Peter did when he denied CHRIST three (3) times, JESUS stands ready to forgive when we ask HIM and we repent.

Our study today will allow us to see GOD allow HIS ONLY SON experience ultimate evil. This was allowed by GOD so that all who believe in HIM will be set free from the bondage of sin and death. When JESUS gave HIS life it paid the penalty for sin, set all believers free from the penalty of sin and opened the door for them to receive the gift of forgiveness, rebirth into GOD’S family and eternal life.

Our study last week ended with the arrest of JESUS. HE was taken immediately to the Sanhedrin for an illegal interrogation. Why was it illegal? It was against the Jewish law to interrogate at night. But let’s see what they did to make it legal.

Let’s read Mark 15:1-5:

Jesus Faces Pilate
1 As soon as it was morning, the • chief priests had a meeting with the elders, • scribes, and the whole • Sanhedrin. After tying Jesus up, they led Him away and handed Him over to • Pilate. 2 So Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered him, “You have said it.”[1] Or That is true, an affirmative oath; Mt 26:64; 27:11 3 And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things. 4 Then Pilate questioned Him again, “Are You not answering anything? Look how many things they are accusing You of!” 5 But Jesus still did not answer anything, so Pilate was amazed.

The chief priests interrogated JESUS during the early morning before sunup, which was a violation of the Jewish law. Notice that “as soon as it was morning”, the chief priests called all the elders and scribes who made up the full Sanhedrin to make final judgment. The Sanhedrin was the Supreme Court and ruling body of the Jews. We need to keep in mind that the vote to condemn JESUS was not unanimous. We know that Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea were members of the Sanhedrin and followers of JESUS.

Those heading the Sanhedrin were eager to process JESUS through their system, because time was of the essence. They wanted JESUS dead but the Sanhedrin could not carry out capital punishment. The Sanhedrin could only condemn and then turn over the accused Jew to the Romans to carry out its’ sentence. The opponents of CHRIST knew they had a short window of opportunity because Jerusalem was full of people celebrating Passover and they could likely find enough people to protest against JESUS. They wanted to create the appearance of turmoil because they knew Pilot did not want the appearance of an uprising. They had a plan to get the job done as quickly as possible.

The Jewish high priest was appointed by Pilot. Therefore, there was a close relationship between the high priest and Pilot. He knew that Pilot did not want any bad reports coming from the Jews in Jerusalem regarding his performance being sent back to the Roman government. History tells us that he was already on thin ice and did not need any trouble from the Jewish ruling body. Pilot was the fifth governor of Judea and ruled from 26-36 A.D. and he was ruthless.

The Sanhedrin condemned JESUS of blasphemy, which according to Jewish law was punishable by death. The problem was that Pilot could care less about the Jewish law. He was only concerned with Roman law and rule, which was political governance. The Sanhedrin tied up JESUS like a common criminal and the entire Sanhedrin went with HIM to Pilot. Did this mean that the members of the Sanhedrin who believed in JESUS supported the decision of the Sanhedrin? Or did they go with JESUS as support and to see what happened? I think the latter reason. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, both members of the Sanhedrin, were bold when they claimed and buried the body of JESUS immediately after HIS death on the cross.

Pilot had likely already heard of this man JESUS. It was his duty to keep tabs on people who had a crowd of people following them. He had likely made up his mind that JESUS was harmless. But now the Sanhedrin had brought JESUS to him accusing HIM of crimes punishable by death. Pilot was concerned with the political nature of matters which might influence Roman rule. He was not concerned about religious matters. The Sanhedrin knew that and made a number of charges against JESUS blending those that violated Jewish law with those that would cause Pilot concern. Mark does not give the detail that other gospel writers give. So let’s take a peek at another scripture:

Luke 23:2:

2 They began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man subverting our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is the • Messiah, a King.”

This accusation of saying HE was a King was what got Pilot’s attention. But it is clear that Pilot did not consider JESUS a threat. It was clear that he was concerned with the pleasing the people.

Pilot was amazed. JESUS was unlike any person he had encountered. I think Pilot saw JESUS as the SON of GOD. When the Jews asked Pilot to change the sign over JESUS' head to read, HE said HE was the King of the Jews, Pilot said the leave it like it was written.

Let’s read Mark 15:12-13, 32:

12 Pilate asked them again, “Then what do you want me to do with the One you call the King of the Jews?” 13 Again they shouted, “Crucify Him!”

The only thing Pilot can hang a charge on is the fact that JESUS was accused of being “King of the Jews.” Pilot knew there was but one king and it was Caesar. Notice Pilot’s statement “the One you call the King of the Jews.” Pilot had questioned JESUS and he had concluded that JESUS was no threat to Roman rule. But he was in a difficult place. He did not want an uprising, the appearance of political unrest or the Jewish leaders accusing him of being uncooperative. It is clear in Pilot’s mind that JESUS was innocent so he asked the crowd what to do with JESUS. Those opposing JESUS had worked the crowd to shout those final words, “Crucify HIM!!!”

Pilot washed his hands in an effort to show that the final decision was not his but the people who had been stirred up by the Sanhedrin.

Once condemned to death, it was death by crucifixion. JESUS had already been beaten but now HE had to walk to Calvary caring HIS own cross as was the custom.
Crucifixion was one of the cruelest methods of capital punishment. The victims hands were either nailed through the wrists or their hands tied to the cross beam. JESUS’ was nailed to the cross. Then the victim’s feet were nailed to the vertical member of the cross. It was a long agonizing death. The victim died of suffocation.
Now for an “I think”, which you know is not backed by scripture or history. My, “I think” is regarding the quick death of JESUS. I think that those nailing a victim to the cross knew exactly where to place the nail to either prolong the death process to inflict maximum suffering or place them to result in quicker death. I think Pilot sent word to the centurion in charge of crucifixion to allow death to come soon. We need to keep in mind that JESUS had the power to come down off the cross but HE chose to remain on the cross for you and for me. HE was faithful to the end.

Let’s read Mark 15:32:

32 Let the • Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe.” Even those who were crucified with Him were taunting Him.

Remember JESUS was tempted in all ways as we are. Here is another moment where I would have been tempted to prove myself. The taunts of the onlookers would have stirred my ego and BAM, I would have taken action. But JESUS knew HIS mission and purpose. HE remained faithful and remained on the cross. Little did those taunting JESUS know that HE was giving HIS life for all who would believe in HIM to be set free from sin and death.

Let’s read Mark 15:37-39:

37 But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed His last. 38 Then the curtain of the sanctuary[15] A heavy curtain separated the inner room of the temple from the outer. was split in two from top to bottom. 39 When the • centurion, who was standing opposite Him, saw the way He[16] Other mss read saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “This man really was God’s Son!”[17] Or the Son of God; Mk 1:1

Mark does not give us the details that other gospel writers do but he does emphasize the splitting of the curtain that separated the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place from top to bottom. This was a sign that GOD split the curtain and believers were no longer separated from GOD. Believers now had direct access to GOD through CHRIST. Mark highlights the impact of the death of JESUS on the centurion. Much discussion has evolved around whether or not the centurion became a Christian at that moment. I think he did. Let’s explore other scripture:

John 19:28-37:
The Finished Work of Jesus
28 After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now accomplished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He said, “I’m thirsty!”[10] Ps 22:15; 69:21 29 A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on hyssop[11] Or with hyssop and held it up to His mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” Then bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
Jesus’ Side Pierced (Notice the fulfillment of prophesy.)
31 Since it was the preparation day,[12] Jn 19:14 the Jews did not want the bodies to remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special[13] Lit great day). They requested that Pilate have the men’s legs broken and that [their bodies]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. be taken away.[14] Dt 21:22–23 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with Him. 33 When they came to Jesus, they did not break His legs since they saw that He was already dead. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. 35 He who saw this has testified[15] Jn 1:14–15,34 so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth.[16] Jn 21:24 36 For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled:[17] Jn 13:18; 17:12; 19:24 Not one of His bones will be broken.[18] Ex 12:46; Nm 9:12; Ps 34:20 37 Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the One they pierced.[19] Zch 12:10

Luke 23:44-46:
The Death of Jesus
44 It was now about noon,[16] Lit about the sixth hour and darkness came over the whole land[17] Or whole earth until three,[18] Lit the ninth hour 45 because the sun’s light failed.[19] Other mss read three, and the sun was darkened The curtain of the sanctuary was split down the middle. 46 And Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I entrust My spirit.”[20] Ps 31:5 Saying this, He breathed His last.

Mathew 27:45-56:
The Death of Jesus
45 From noon until three in the afternoon[21] Lit From the sixth hour to the ninth hour darkness came over the whole land.[22] Or whole earth 46 At about three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Elí, Elí, lemá sabachtháni?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken[23] Or abandoned Me?”[24] Ps 22:1 47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling for Elijah!” 48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, fixed it on a reed, and offered Him a drink. 49 But the rest said, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to save Him!” 50 Jesus shouted again with a loud voice and gave up His spirit. 51 Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary[25] A heavy curtain separated the inner room of the temple from the outer. was split in two from top to bottom; the earth quaked and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened and many bodies of the saints who had gone to their rest[26] Lit saints having fallen asleep; that is, they had died were raised. 53 And they came out of the tombs after His resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many. 54 When the • centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, “This man really was God’s Son!”[27] Or the Son of God 55 Many women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and ministered to Him were there, looking on from a distance. 56 Among them were • Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.

The women who were with JESUS at the crucifixion were the ones going to HIS tomb on Sunday morning.

Let’s read Mark 16:1, 5-7:

Resurrection Morning
1 When the Sabbath was over, • Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so they could go and anoint Him.

5 When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man[1] In Mt 28:2, the young man = an angel dressed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; they were amazed and alarmed.[2] Amazed and alarmed translate the idea of one Gk word. 6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he told them. “You are looking for Jesus the • Nazarene, who was crucified. He has been resurrected! He is not here! See the place where they put Him. 7 But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see Him there just as He told you.’ ”

The death of JESUS is one thing but HIS resurrection sets HIM apart from all. GOD knew without the resurrection people could dispute the validity of JESUS’ passion but the resurrection would be proof that HE had paid the penalty for sin and the consequences of sin, which is death. The fact that GOD raised JESUS from the dead was proof that JESUS was the acceptable sacrifice for the original sin, which removed the death sentence resulting from Adam and Eve’s disobedience.

JESUS was crucified on Friday. By this time (Sunday mornig) JESUS would be decaying. Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea had applied seventy-five (75) pounds of myrrh and aloes on HIS body on Friday. As the ladies walked to the tomb, they pondered how they would remove the large stone placed over the entrance to the tomb. We know from other gospels that Pilot had the tomb sealed and placed soldiers to guard the tomb.

To their surprise the tomb was open and they entered. They see a young man inside the tomb dressed in a long white robe. Other gospel writers tell us that this young man is an angel. Other gospel writers tell us there were two (2) angels present. Mark tells us that the women were amazed and afraid. The angel calmed their fear and asked them if they were seeking JESUS the Nazarene? Why did the angel ask them this question? Here is another, I think, moment. I think the angel was emphasizing that JESUS came to earth as a human and gave HIS earthly life to satisfy the sin debt required by GOD. As proof that JESUS’ sacrifice was acceptable, GOD raised HIM from the dead. This was proof that JESUS satisfied the sin debt and conquered death so that all who believe in HIM will receive the gift of eternal life and will receive the HOLY SPIRIT to indwell their lives.

The angel made certain they knew CHRIST, born of a virgin, had been resurrected and they were to be the bearers of this Good News. JESUS’ earthly body had died but GOD had raised HIM and gave HIM a glorified body. JESUS had told HIS disciples that HE would meet them in Galilee after HIS resurrection.

I think that the specific mention of Peter is so precious. Even when we think we have disappointed GOD, HE has an open invitation for HIS children to come to HIM. Peter had a choice, would he go to meet JESUS or not? We know that he went.

This was a quick overview of the Gospel according to Mark. What is the gospel according to you? Do you know JESUS as your personal SAVIOR? I hope so. It is a very simple step of faith that we all have to make. Yet, it is often the hardest step we make. You cannot live the Christian life in your own strength. You must have a knowing relationship with CHRIST. By yielding your will to HIM and allowing HIM, through the HOLY SPIRIT, to direct your life will help build this relationship. Read and study HIS Word, the Bible. Talk to HIM in prayer and ask HIM to lead you to a body of believers who can journey with you as you seek to grow and mature in CHRIST.

We find in Acts 6:7, that Doctor Luke reported after Pentecost even some of the Jewish priests became believers:

7 So the preaching about God flourished, the number of the disciples in Jerusalem multiplied greatly, and a large group of priests became obedient to the faith.

Jesus - Hero Betrayed - Mark 14 - October 18, 2009

Bible Study – Knowing Jesus – Hero Betrayed – October 18, 2009

This is study seven (7) in our series “Knowing Jesus – Discipleship.”

Our scripture is Mark 14:27-34, 37-38, 43, 48-50.

Being a Christian is not easy. It is impossible in our own strength and that is why we must build a relationship with GOD through CHRIST. It is a matter of building confidence and trust in HIM. Our study this week continues with the events leading to the death of JESUS upon the cross for the sins of mankind and HIS resurrection from the dead. The resurrection of JESUS is proof that JESUS paid the penalty for sin and that HE conquered death. HE willingly did this for each person who will come to HIM and ask HIM to forgive his/her sins, believe that HE gave HIS life for him/her and ask HIM to come into his/her life.

This is the miracle of rebirth in the spirit. Our earth suit or body will die but our born-again Spirit will exit our body when we die and immediately be with our SAVIOR and LORD, JESUS. At HIS second coming our born-again Spirit will come back with HIM and all born-again believers will receive their New Glorified Bodies. Our Glorified Bodies will be just like JESUS’ resurrected body. The indwelling HOLY SPIRIT confirms with our Spirit that we are HIS children. Just as you cannot become unborn, once conceived, you cannot become unborn once asking JESUS to forgive you and to come into your life. Once conceived by GOD, you are always GOD'S child.

Our Spiritual journey begins the moment we accept CHRIST as our SAVIOR and the HOLY SPIRIT begins to enlighten us to all truth. As we study these lessons we can see the struggle the disciples had with understanding and really knowing JESUS. They had to be exposed to circumstances which led them to fully know and understand HIM. Our journey is no different. The beauty with us today is that we know the rest of the story as we study GOD’S Word and obediently serve HIM. It is an awesome journey.

The disciples of JESUS, with the exception of Judas, were confident that when the going got tough, they would fight to the end for HIM. However, they didn’t hang tough but neither did they terminate their relationship with HIM. Once they understood the truth, they all obediently served HIM. When believers fail HIM, HE does not give up on us and sever our relationship with HIM. If the relationship is severed believers do it. A believer may block the relationship but the fact that a believer belongs to GOD, through the miracle of the rebirth, is never severed. But JESUS always stands ready to forgive and restore when we realize the error of our way and repent. Repent means to stop doing whatever is not pleasing to GOD. GOD never overrides our will.

Let’s read Mark 14:27-31:

Peter’s Denial Predicted
27 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will run away,[6] Other mss add because of Me this night [7] Or • stumble because it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.[8] Zch 13:7 28 But after I have been resurrected, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 29 Peter told Him, “Even if everyone runs away, I will certainly not!” 30 “I assure you,” Jesus said to him, “today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times!” 31 But he kept insisting, “If I have to die with You, I will never deny You!” And they all said the same thing.

JESUS had just completed the Passover Meal where HE had instituted the LORD’S Supper. HE told HIS disciples that they would desert HIM and quoted from part of Zechariah 13:7 - Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered;[9]
Mt 26:31; Mk 14:27

Notice that JESUS stated “I” strike the shepherd. HE was referring to GOD. This was GOD’S plan that was being carried out for the redemption of mankind. JESUS quickly added that HE would be resurrected and would meet them in Galilee.

Peter was very confident that he would stick with JESUS to the bitter end. Peter told JESUS that HE would even die for HIM. Peter was sure of his faith and confident in himself. JESUS told him that before the rooster crowed twice this very night, Peter would deny HIM three (3) times. (A piece of trivia – The Romans referred to the end of the 3:00 AM watch as the “cock-crow” by blowing a bugle. Does this tie to what JESUS was referring to or was HE referring to an actual rooster crowing? I do not know. It gives us something to ponder.)

Peter could not in his wildest imagination conceive of denying JESUS. Often, many well meaning Christians believe they will never do anything to compromise their witness to CHRIST. But the flesh can take over and we find ourselves in a compromised situation. When we come to our senses it breaks our hearts when we realize that we have disappointed JESUS and often many loved ones and friends who know the walk and witness we had with JESUS. The Good News is that HE forgives and restores when we confess and repent.

When Peter realized what he had done, he wept tears of repentance. We know that he was forgiven and went on to be a mighty servant for our LORD. Just as GOD forgave Peter, HE will forgive us when we confess our wrong doing. CHRIST never abandons us no matter what we may do. Our part is to repent and confess. HIS part is to forgive, cleanse and restore. When we confess and repent, Satan will bring back the memories but our response is, “I have confessed this and GOD has forgiven me, cleansed me and restored me, now bug off!” Then focus on the joy of your salvation in CHRIST because you have been washed in the blood of the Lamb that takes away all of your sins.

Let’s read Mark 14: 32-34, 37-38:

The Prayer in the Garden
32 Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and He told His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be deeply distressed and horrified. 34 Then He said to them, “My soul is swallowed up in sorrow[9] Or I am deeply grieved —to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake.”

JESUS went to the garden of Gethsemane to pray. Gethsemane was part of a grove of olive trees and means “oil press.” Some Bible scholars believe that Mary, the mother of Mark, owned the garden.

JESUS instructed eight (8) of HIS disciples to stay in a certain place while HE took Peter, James and John, HIS inner circle, with HIM deeper into the garden. We discussed this in our August 30 study. Mark captured the deep distress and agony of JESUS. Mark used the words “deeply distressed and horrified.” Doctor Luke in Luke 22:44 captured this moment by stating -
44 Being in anguish, He prayed more fervently, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.[12] Other mss omit bracketed text

I believe JESUS was checking with the FATHER to ensure that all the events were in place for HIS final hours upon earth and to take this cup from HIM. JESUS knew that Judas would betray HIM, that HIS disciples would be scattered and that Peter would deny HIM. I believe it was likely that a battle raged between HIS flesh and HIS divinity. We need to keep in mind that JESUS was tempted in all ways as we are, yet without sin. It is vital that we focus on the fact that HE remained faithful to HIS calling – “Not MY will but YOUR will be done.”

Let’s read Mark 14:37-38:

37 Then He came and found them sleeping. “Simon, are you sleeping?” He asked Peter. “Couldn’t you stay awake one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

JESUS found HIS inner circle sleeping and focused HIS remarks upon Peter. HE urged Peter to stay awake and pray. JESUS knew what was about to take place and HE knew that Peter needed to be prayed up in order to prepare him for these events.
I think when JESUS told Peter that the “spirit is willing but the flesh is weak” HE knew the remarks Peter had made earlier, about being willing to die for HIM, were coming from his heart. The mention of “spirit” here refers to his “human spirit”, his own resolve to bring about a certain result. But JESUS knew that the flesh can trump the human spirit unless you remained focused upon the will of GOD through prayer. JESUS went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray and HE knew how critical it was to pray and maintain your focus on GOD during trying times.

JESUS asked Peter specifically to pray. GOD often leads believers to pray when HE knows they will be facing difficult times in their lives.

JESUS approached the inner circle and told them that HIS betrayer was at hand and while HE was speaking, Judas and the mob arrive.

Let’s read Mark 14:43, 48-50:

The Judas Kiss
43 While He was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, suddenly arrived. With him was a mob, with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44 His betrayer had given them a signal. “The One I kiss,” he said, “He’s the One; arrest Him and take Him away under guard.” 45 So when he came, he went right up to Him and said, “• Rabbi!”—and kissed Him. 46 Then they took hold of Him and arrested Him. 47 And one of those who stood by drew his sword, struck the high priest’s • slave, and cut off his ear. 48 But Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs, as though I were a criminal,[11] Lit as against a criminal to capture Me? 49 Every day I was among you, teaching in the • temple complex, and you didn’t arrest Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” 50 Then they all deserted Him and ran away. 51 Now a certain young man,[12] Perhaps John Mark who later wrote this Gospel having a linen cloth wrapped around his naked body, was following Him. They caught hold of him, 52 but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked.

Judas approached JESUS and identified HIM with a kiss. It was night and since there were no street lights it was dark. The only light came from torches and it would be hard to identify a certain person unless you got close to them. But Judas solved their problem. Judas agreed to identify JESUS by kissing HIM. The mob accompanying Judas was sent by the chief priests, the scribes and the elders who were prepared for a fight. The Romans soldiers had swords and the temple police had clubs. JESUS rebuked them for coming after HIM like a common criminal. HE did not attempt to hide or evade them. They saw HIM in the temple every day.

One disciple drew his sword and cut off the ear of the high priest’s slave. The Apostle John identified this disciple in John 18:10-11 -
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear. (The slave’s name was Malchus.) 11 At that, Jesus said to Peter, “Sheathe your sword! Am I not to drink the cup the Father has given Me?”

In Luke 22:51, we learn that JESUS healed the slave’s ear -
51 But Jesus responded, “No more of this!”[14] Lit Permit as far as this And touching his ear, He healed him.
Peter was ready to fight, just as he had told JESUS earlier but when JESUS told him in stern words to put up his sword and HE healed the slave’s ear, it must have given Peter a jolt. The disciples were likely still thinking that JESUS, the promised Messiah, would be an earthly ruler. I believe the eleven (11) were ready to fight but when JESUS rebuked Peter, who HE had called the rock, they backed down and they all scattered.

When we build up an image of our hero in our minds and he/she does not measure up to our expectations, we become disillusioned. I think this happened to Peter and likely to the other disciples as we see the events of Passion Week continue to unfold.
In Peter’s case, restraint was more difficult than reacting by drawing his sword and taking matters into his own hands. GOD is in control. Did Peter’s reaction when they came to arrest JESUS and his later denial make him a stronger apostle than he would have been otherwise? It was the plan and purpose of GOD that HIS ONLY SON suffer and die for the sins of all who will believe in HIM. This became clear to Peter at Pentecost, when he was filled with the HOLY SPIRIT.

It is vital that we focus on the fact that Peter remained faithful. Peter had some hang-ups that GOD had to deal with along his Spiritual growth and maturity. Even though Peter denied CHRIST, GOD never gave up on him and HE will never give up on us. Keep in mind that all believers have an enemy, Satan, and his job is to discourage and defeat believers. Our hope is in CHRIST, which is confirmed by the HOLY SPIRIT in our hearts.

JESUS told Peter that the scriptures must be fulfilled. The eleven disciples scatter when JESUS was arrested. Even Judas went back to those who gave him thirty pieces of silver to betray JESUS to return their money. They rejected the money because it was blood money.

When the disciples scattered, some in the mob tried to grab a certain young man who escaped leaving his garment behind leaving him naked. Most Bible scholars believe this naked young man was Mark the writer of this Gospel.

JESUS knew what HE had to do. HE could have called legions of angels to come to HIS aid and deliver HIM. If I had this power, I would have used it. Again, I think this was part of JESUS’ struggle. HE had to restrain Himself from using the power HE had at HIS command. HE restrained Himself for you and for me. JESUS had to trust HIS FATHER and not HIS power.

JESUS is the hero of all believers and the hope for all non-believers. HE remained faithful to the end and HE gave HIS life that believers will be set free from the bondage of sin and death. Forgiveness of your sins is available. The only person who can forgive you is JESUS. Ask HIM to forgive you, accept the fact that HE died for your sins and ask HIM to come into your life right now.

Knowing Jesus - Hero Doing Battle - Mark 12 - October 11, 2009

Bible Study – Knowing Jesus – Hero Doing Battle – October 11, 2009

This is study six (6) in our series on “Knowing Jesus – Discipleship.”

Our scripture is Mark 12:13-17, 28-31, 32-34, 38-40.

This is the final week of JESUS’ earthly ministry. HE took on the Jewish religious system because it was corrupt. In our last study we learned that JESUS was upset with the Jewish religious system. The fruitlessness of the leafy fig tree represented the fruitlessness of the Jewish religious system. The moneychangers and the marketing in the temple showed how far they had deviated from the true worship of GOD. This led HIM to cleanse the temple and in turn lead the religious leaders to be determined to get rid of HIM. This week our study centers on the religious leaders’ attempts to trap JESUS in an effort to condemn HIM.

The religious leaders were soliciting support to trap JESUS. Notice how they enlisted more influential religious people to test JESUS in order to build a case against HIM. This was the last week of JESUS’ earthly ministry and the intensity of HIS mission escalated rapidly. Was GOD giving the religious leaders of the Jewish faith, who should know the scriptures of the promised Messiah, a final opportunity to see JESUS as the promised Messiah? When we have prejudice or bias against a person, our objectivity shuts down. We do know that some of the religious leaders saw JESUS as the promised Messiah, such as Nicodemus in John Chapter 3 but they were in the minority.

Let’s read Mark 12:13-17:

God and Caesar
13 Then they[7] Mk 11:27 sent some of the • Pharisees and the • Herodias to Him to trap Him by what He said.[8] Lit trap Him in (a) word 14 When they came, they said to Him, “Teacher, we know You are truthful and defer to no one, for You don’t show partiality[9] Lit don’t look on the face of men; that is, on the outward appearance but teach truthfully the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? 15 Should we pay, or should we not pay?” But knowing their hypocrisy, He said to them, “Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a • denarius to look at.” 16 So they brought one. “Whose image and inscription is this?” He asked them. “Caesar’s,” they said. 17 Then Jesus told them, “Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they were amazed at Him.

In verse 13, who are “they”? Let’s look at Mark 11:27:

27 They (JESUS and HIS disciples) came again to Jerusalem. As He was walking in the temple complex, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came and asked Him,

“They” in verse 13 are the “chief priests, the scribes and the elders” who sent some Pharisees and Herodians to trap JESUS. The “Chief priests, the scribes and the elders” wanted other religious leaders to support them in their effort by having others to evaluate and test JESUS. Having more of the right people against JESUS gave them cover and made their charges against HIM more credible. It may have eased their conscience because they knew they were trying to condemn an innocent man, WHO happened to be the SON of GOD.

The Pharisees were a religious political party who believed in the strict observance of GOD’S law as interpreted by the scribes. They believed in the resurrection, whereas, the Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection (That is why they were “sad you see”.), which put these two (2) groups at odds against each other. But JESUS became a common cause. HE was a threat to both political and religious systems.

The Pharisees had a seat on the Sanhedrin, which were the Supreme Court and legislative body of the Jews. The Sanhedrin could condemn someone but they could not carry out the death sentence, since they were under Roman rule. The Romans had to carry out the punishment. So we have strange bed-fellows coming together.

The Herodians were a political group of the Jews who were favorable to Herod. So the Pharisees and the Herodians joined forces in an effort to trap JESUS because they considered JESUS a threat to their interest. JESUS talked about the Kingdom of GOD, which was an issue for those who supported Herod, the Herodians.

The opening remarks of those testing will likely come back to them on judgment day. They spoke truth in an attempt to flatter JESUS but they did not heed their own words of truth. Flattery will influence some people but it did not sway JESUS. They thought they had devised the perfect plan to trap JESUS.

Their question was, “Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar?” JESUS spotted their trap in a heartbeat and asked them “Why are you testing me?” HE asked for a denarius. A denarius was equivalent to one day’s wage. The tax was a census tax which every person living in Judea had to pay once per year.

They handed HIM a denarius. Their ears were tuned into what HE was about to say. HE asked them a question, “Whose image and inscription is on this coin?” They responded, “Caesar’s.” Then HE gave them a profound response as recorded in verse 17 -
17 Then Jesus told them, “Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they were amazed at Him.

The denarius had the image of Caesar on one side and Caesar dressed as a high priest wearing a diadem. The inscription on the face side of the denarius translated “Tiberius Caesar Augustus, Son of the Divine Augustus” and on the back side “Highest Priest.” Caesar ascribed divinity to himself and claimed to the supreme authority in both political and spiritual matters. This irked the devout Jews, therefore, if JESUS said “yes” to paying taxes it would have created a problem with the devout Jews. If JESUS said “no” HE could have been charged with insurrection against the Roman government.

They were amazed at HIS response. Why didn’t HIS response cause them to really want to get to know more about this man called JESUS? They had been sent on a mission commissioned by some very important and powerful people. So they had to play the game rather than listen to their hearts.

JESUS made the point that every person was made in the image of GOD. HIS image is stamped upon us and we belong to HIM. Just as the person who holds the coin with the image of Caesar had a choice to pay the tax or not, every person has a choice whether or not he or she will give his/her life to JESUS, the true Messiah. Both owe a debt and failing to pay the debt has consequences. Caesar can throw them into prison or punish them for failure to pay. The debt all people have to pay to GOD is their sin debt.

Romans 3:23:
23 For all have sinned and fall short of the[20] Or and lack the glory of God.

Romans 6:23:
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

All people have a sin debt but the Good News is that JESUS paid the price for their sin by HIS shed blood upon the cross. Although HE has paid the price for sin, each person must accept what HE has done for him/her. How do we know that? Because GOD, the FATHER, raised HIM from the death as proof that HE conquered sin and conquered death. By accepting this fact by asking JESUS to forgive you of your sins and to come into your life, you are born into the family of GOD through the miracle of rebirth. HIS Spirit unites with your spirit and conception takes place. Once you have been born-again you will NEVER be unborn. You are eternally HIS child.

How do you know that? Once you become a Christian, HE sends the HOLY SPIRIT to live in you or indwell you. Look at what Paul says in Romans 8:16:

16 The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children,

This is the assurance of salvation that HE gives every believer. The Bible tells us the HOLY SPIRIT is a believer’s down payment or security deposit that our step of faith is real and true. Most unbelievers want this assurance before they ask JESUS to forgive them of their sins and to come into their heart and life. But this is not how GOD works. All people must take the step of faith first. You do not have to understand it. It is not that you must say certain words. It is all about the attitude of the heart. I have heard the testimony of a believer who said, “LORD I give up.”

After you ask CHRIST to forgive you of your sins and to come into your life, your spiritual growth begins. You will need spiritual nourishment – Bible study, talking and discussing with GOD (Prayer), building a relationship with GOD through CHRIST and obediently serving HIM as HE leads you. It is an awesome journey which is not easy. You have the joy of knowing that you are serving the living GOD, which has eternal rewards.

Let’s read Mark 12: 28-31:
The Primary Commandments
28 One of the • scribes approached. When he heard them debating and saw that Jesus answered them well, he asked Him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?”[15] Lit Which commandment is first of all? 29 “This is the most important,”[16] Other mss add of all the commandments Jesus answered: Listen, Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is One.[17] Or The Lord our God is one Lord. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.[18] Dt 6:4–5; Jos 22:5 [19] Other mss add This is the first commandment. 31 “The second is: Love your neighbor as yourself.[20] Lv 19:18 There is no other commandment greater than these.”

In Mark 12:18-27, the religious leaders continued to question JESUS. They discussed the resurrection and the scribe in this scripture was listening.

The scribe or teacher of the law listened to the debate regarding the resurrection and was favorably impressed with the response of JESUS. So the scribe/teacher asked JESUS, “Which commandment was the most important of all?” I believe it was a legitimate question coming from someone who wanted to learn. JESUS gave him HIS response verses 29- 31.

We need to look at the verses following JESUS’ response in Mark 12: 32-34:
32 Then the scribe said to Him, “You are right, Teacher! You have correctly said that He is One, and there is no one else except Him. 33 And to love Him with all your heart, with all your understanding,[21] Other mss add with all your soul and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, is far more [important]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 When Jesus saw that he answered intelligently, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And no one dared to question Him any longer.

The scribe was pleased and seemed excited with JESUS’ response. JESUS saw his excitement and told him “You are not far from the kingdom of GOD.” Notice the scribe added "more important than burnt offerings and sacrifices." The missing ingredient was that scribe/teacher needed to see JESUS as the promised Messiah as the ultimate sacrifice for mankind and then he could take the step of faith and enter into the kingdom of GOD.

Becoming a believer is such a simple step but so hard to take. We try to figure it out, which is impossible. We must take a step of faith – LORD, here I am, just as I am and ask you to forgive me of my sins and to come into my life. In a nanosecond HE will. This is the beginning of an awesome journey with HIM which is eternal.

Let’s read Mark 12:38-40:

Warning against the Scribes
38 He also said in His teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes, and who want greetings in the marketplaces, 39 the front seats in the • synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour widows’ houses and say long prayers just for show. These will receive harsher punishment.”

JESUS continued to teach in the temple complex. HE spoke about a statement David made in Psalm 110:1 -
1 The Lord declared to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies Your footstool.”[1] Mt 22:44; Mk 12:36; Lk 20:42–43; Ac 2:34–35; 1 Co 15:25; Heb 1:13 JESUS asked the religious leaders “How could the Messiah be David’s son?” They could not answer HIM because they did not recognize that the Messiah would be a descendant of David WHO would come to earth at some later time appointed by GOD. The crowd was listening intently to all HE was saying. During HIS teaching HE uttered the words in verses 38-40.

The scribes were supposed to be the teachers and role models but JESUS told the crowd not to be fooled by their appearance of being righteous and knowing the truth. The people likely knew what JESUS was speaking about but no one, except JESUS, would dare make such accusations about the scribes. The scribes were not paid for knowing the scriptures and interpreting them. They depended upon the hospitality of devout Jews. So they took advantage of their position to extract support from these devout Jews.

Giving the appearance of piousness is not acceptable to GOD. GOD looks at the heart and the fruit Godly people produce. The scribes made a good show at all the important places but they cheated poor widows out of their property under the guise of helping them. I believe those who heard these words knew exactly what JESUS was talking about. They were marketing themselves by being seen at these important gatherings. They depended upon their position and association with the religious system to give them credibility. They were hypocrites. GOD’S desire is for HIS children to practice what they preach and not be chameleons who change with their surroundings.

The same is true for all believers today. Are we one way at church, around fellow believers, another when we get with our worldly friends or when we think no one can see what we are doing? This is why believers must have the relationship with GOD through CHRIST to have genuine consistency in their lives.

Warrior Hero - Mark 11 - October 4, 2009

Bible Study Lesson – Warrior Hero – October 4, 2009

This is study five (5) in our series “Know Jesus.”

We continue in the Book of Mark for the next four (4) weeks with a focus on “Discipleship”.

Our scripture for today’s study is Mark 11:12-25 and it focuses upon JESUS taking on the Jewish religious establishment, thus “Warrior Hero.”

When I was growing up, being a Christian was often looked upon as being a wimp or a sissy. But it takes faith and courage to become a Christian. When the world looks at the Christian living the Christian life it can take on many different forms because those who call themselves Christian conduct their lives differently. It can be positive or negative. Some can give the appearance of being pious, self-righteous or legalistic, which can turn some people off. Some Christians may be like the fig tree, which we will discuss in today’s study. They are all show but no substance or fruit. We as Christians can go through the motions of being a Christian without really knowing the presence and power of CHRIST in our lives. A person must be born-again into the family of GOD through the miracle of rebirth. CHRIST in you is what makes you a Christian and not becoming a member of a certain church. Being an active member of a church that preaches the truth about CHRIST is vital to help believers grow and mature in CHRIST. When believers become a member of GOD’S family they also get family traits and family benefits. Believers are indwelt by the HOLY SPIRIT WHO opens the eyes of their hearts to be able to comprehend, see and understand truth. It is all about a believer’s relationship through CHRIST with GOD their FATHER. The veil of spiritual obscurity is lifted as believers build a more intimate, knowing relationship with CHRIST, which is the process of sanctification.

The events we will study today take place during the Passover Week in Jerusalem. It is also referred to as the Passion Week because JESUS will be crucified on Friday of this week. JESUS was in the final week of HIS earthly ministry.

JESUS was staying in Bethany, which was located about two (2) miles southeast of Jerusalem. Bethany was where Mary, Martha and Lazarus lived. JESUS was likely staying with them and walked the two (2) miles each day to Jerusalem.

Let’s read Mark 11:12-14, 20-21:

The Barren Fig Tree Is Cursed
12 The next day when they came out from Bethany, He was hungry. 13 After seeing in the distance a fig tree with leaves, He went to find out if there was anything on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!”[3] Jr 8:13 And His disciples heard it.

JESUS went to the temple and cleansed it. We will discuss this later.

The Barren Fig Tree Is Withered

20 Early in the morning, as they were passing by, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots up. 21 Then Peter remembered and said to Him, “• Rabbi, look! The fig tree that You cursed is withered.”

This incident with the fig tree, gives us a lot to think about. JESUS was hungry and on HIS way to Jerusalem. HE saw a fig tree with leaves. When a fig tree had leaves that was a tell-tell sign that it had some form of edible figs. This was the week of Passover, which was in the month of April. Fig season was in July and August. JESUS went to see if the fig tree had figs. This was not fig season, yet JESUS condemned the fig tree. HE knew that figs could come early in the form of a small fig or sprout. I understand that the sprout was edible. But this leafy fig tree had no fruit. So why did JESUS get upset?

The fact that the fig tree did not have fruit was no fault of the fig tree but it had produced leaves. This was the point of concern for JESUS. The fig tree gave the appearance of having something of value but it didn’t. The fact it had leaves was misleading for someone seeking to find food. JESUS likened this to the Jewish religious system. The Jewish religion appeared to offer spiritual food for those seeking GOD and the truth but the Jewish religious system was a sham. JESUS knew that GOD had led the prophets to use the fig tree as a symbol for Israel.

There will be no grapes on the vine, no figs on the fig tree, and even the leaf will wither. Whatever I have given them will be lost to them.

Hosea 9:10, 16-17:

10 I discovered Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers like the first fruit of the fig tree in its first season. But they went to Baal–peor,[4] Nm 25:1–9 consecrated themselves to Shame,[5] = a Hb term of derision for Baal and became detestable, like the thing they loved.

16 Ephraim is blighted; their roots are withered; they cannot bear fruit. Even if they bear children, I will kill the precious offspring of their wombs. 17 My God will reject them because they have not listened to Him; they will become wanderers among the nations.

Micah 7:1:

Israel’s Moral Decline

When JESUS saw the leafy fig tree was HE hoping to find figs, not because HE was hungry, but because it would be a sign that there was hope for Israel? The absence of figs confirmed what HE already knew, Israel was spiritually dead. JESUS knew the scriptures. HIS disciples also knew the scriptures and the connection JESUS had made by their statement “HIS disciples heard it.”

Some Bible scholars believe this is why Mark went from JESUS condemning the fig tree to HIM cleansing the temple. Mark wanted his readers to know that the disciples had figured out what JESUS was saying. They “heard it” and made the connection. The barren fig tree was an example of Jewish religion. The Jews had plenty of form, rules, laws, regulations and rituals but no substance. People were starving for spiritual food.

Early the next morning JESUS and HIS disciples are walking back to Jerusalem and Peter brought attention to the fig tree that JESUS had condemned. The fig tree was, in essence, dead from its roots up. Given the fact that the fig tree represented Israel, it was clear that the Jewish religious system was dead, roots and all. There was no hope to revive it but a new hope was about to begin.

A new day was coming in just a few days. JESUS’ death, burial and resurrection would be the foundation to replace the Jewish system of animal sacrifice. JESUS would be the perfect lamb sacrificed for the sins of mankind. After HIS resurrection, JESUS was seen by over 500 people before HE ascended into heaven to sit at the right-hand of the FATHER. Once HE was in heaven, HE sent the HOLY SPIRIT to indwell all believers. HIS death, resurrection and ascension had made ready the believers’ body to receive the HOLY SPIRIT. The shed blood of CHRIST made HOLY the body for all who believe.

Believers know the truth and represent CHRIST to others. Will those who hungry for spiritual food find fruit on our tree or are we just playing the game of being a Christian? So how do believers produce fruit?

JESUS gave us a wonderful example in John 15:5-8:

5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without Me. 6 If anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you. 8 My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be[1] Or and become My disciples.

It is all about relationship – a believer’s relationship with CHRIST. Are you grafted into the vine? When you are grafted into the vine, you do not have to struggle producing fruit. You will produce fruit. Focus on the relationship and seeking to know HIM. Let the life and power of CHRIST flow through you.

Let’s read Mark 11:15-19:

Cleansing the Temple Complex – This follows JESUS condemning the fig tree.

15 They came to Jerusalem, and He went into the temple complex and began to throw out those buying and selling in the temple. He overturned the money changers’ tables and the chairs of those selling doves, 16 and would not permit anyone to carry goods through the temple complex. 17 Then He began to teach them: “Is it not written, My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations?[4] Isaiah 56:7 But you have made it a den of thieves!”[5] Jr 7:11 18 Then the • chief priests and the • scribes heard it and started looking for a way to destroy Him. For they were afraid of Him, because the whole crowd was astonished by His teaching.

JESUS went to the temple. HE had just seen the barren fig tree, which likely reminded HIM of the poor spiritual state the Jews and the converts to Judaism were in. HE went to the temple which was begun by Herod the Great about 19 B.C. The temple was not completed until 64 A.D. but it was useable in JESUS’ day. It was like a thoroughfare. People were using the outer court of temple area, the Gentile area, as a cut-through to get from one side to the other. There was chaos.

The temple complex covered about 30 acres. It had the (1) Holy of Holies where the priest could enter only once per year after sacrificing an animal for his own sins. The Holy of Holies was separated by a curtain from the (2) Holy Place which the priest could enter daily to burn incense as a symbol of the prayers of the people. Next was the (3) Court of the Priests where sacrifices were offered. Then there were three (3) courts:

(1) Court of Israel where circumcised Jewish men could congregate.

(2) Court of Women for Jewish women. This was also where the temple treasury was located and gifts could be deposited.

(3) Outermost court was for the Gentiles. The outermost court was the largest part of the temple complex. This was where all the activity took place for selling animals for sacrifice and the exchanging money. This area was about 25 acres. Some scholars believe that the exchange area had been near this court but that it had been moved to the area where the Gentiles gathered during the life of JESUS. This added fuel to the fire because it became a gigantic market place or jockey lot. Money from the Romans or Greeks had an image on them and had to be exchanged for a special Jewish coin called the Tyrian* shekel to pay the temple tax, which oddly also had a pagan image. Of course, there was a service charge for this exchange. The priests had their hands out for their cut of the exchange fee. Some worshipers may have brought animals for sacrifice but their animals had to be inspected to qualify as being acceptable for sacrifice. If their animal did not pass inspection, would-be worshippers had to exchange their animals for acceptable animals, of course for a fee. The exchanged rejected animal would become an acceptable animal for those who did not bring an animal for sacrifice and had to purchase an animal on site, of course for a fee. It was a lucrative business for the merchants and the priests. Worship was all about business and those seeking GOD were being robbed. No wonder JESUS cleaned house.

*The Tyrian shekel was minted in the city of Tyre about 125 BC. Hiram, king of Tyre provided the materials and artisans to help Solomon build the first temple in Jerusalem. The Tyrian shekel had the image of a pagan deity (Melqarth-Herakles) on its face and an image of an eagle on the back. Melqarth was the god of the Phoenicians or Baal, who was related to Hercules or Herakles. This became the coin used to pay the temple tax and was still being used up until about 69 A.D. The Tyrian shekel paid the tax for two (2) people and a half-shekel paid the tax for one (1) person.

JESUS called the merchants and money changers a “den of thieves” because they were taking advantage of the people. HE became angry and cleared the area. You can only imagine how quickly the word spread to the local religious leaders of JESUS’ actions. JESUS was a threat to the lucrative religious system. HE had to go. The religious leaders began to plot to get rid of HIM but they had to be careful because the people were “astonished with HIS teaching.” The people were aware of the corruption in the religious system but they had no choice. They wanted to worship the true GOD of Israel. The system had plenty of show but no substance.

Let’s read Mark 11:22-26: (This scripture follows Peter’s reference to the withered fig tree.)

22 Jesus replied to them, “Have faith in God. 23 • I assure you: If anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore, I tell you, all the things you pray and ask for—believe that you have received[6] Other mss read you receive; other mss read you will receive them, and you will have them. 25 And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven will also forgive you your wrongdoing.[7] These are the only uses of this word in Mk. It means “the violation of the Law” or “stepping over a boundary” or “departing from the path” or “trespass.” [ 26 But if you don’t forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your wrongdoing.”][8] Other mss omit bracketed text

Peter had just commented to JESUS about the fig tree HE had cursed the day before. Peter was impressed with the power of JESUS words. JESUS drew their attention to the power of GOD. HE told them that the fig tree withering and dying was nothing compared to what was possible when you place your faith and trust in GOD.

We have to be careful. It seems that believers have special magical powers at their command. We must keep in mind that it is our faith in GOD and it is HIS power that moves the mountains in our lives. Notice the words of JESUS “believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.” GOD has confirmed in the heart of the person that what he/she has requested is according to GOD’S plan and it is a done deal. GOD will do it. However, GOD decides how, when and where HIS power will be used. It is all about knowing GOD and obedience.

GOD instructed Moses to speak to the rock for water. Instead Moses struck the rock with his staff. Water came forth out of the rock but at a severe cost to Moses because he was disobedient. It cost him the opportunity to enter the Promised Land.

Numbers 20:6-13:

6 Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the doorway of the tent of meeting. They fell down with their faces [to the ground]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. , and the glory of the Lord appeared to them. 7 The Lord spoke to Moses, 8 “Take the staff[5] Nm 17:8; Ex 4:2–5; 17:4–9 and assemble the community. You and your brother Aaron are to speak to the rock while they watch, and it will yield its water. You will bring out water for them from the rock and provide drink for the community and their livestock.” 9 So Moses took the staff from the Lord’s presence[6] Nm 17:10 just as He had commanded him. 10 Moses and Aaron summoned the assembly in front of the rock, and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels! Must we (ego) bring water out of this rock for you?” 11 Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff, so that a great amount of water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.[7] Ex 17:6; Ps 78:15; 1 Co 10:4 12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust Me to show My holiness in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this assembly into the land I have given them.”[8] Nm 27:12–14 13 These are the waters of Meribah,[9] = quarreling [10] Nm 27:14; Ex 17:7; Dt 32:51; Ps 95:8; 106:32 where the Israelites quarreled with the Lord, and He showed His holiness to them.

JESUS was not giving believers’ carte blanche to go into the “earth moving” business by commanding mountains to jump into the sea. But HE was saying when believers have faith in GOD, no matter what comes their way GOD will help them. It is vital to focus on the mountain mover, GOD. It is not the believer generating enough faith so the mountain will move. It is the believer having faith in GOD, WHO has confirmed in his/her heart that what has been requested will be done. There is a fine line.

Our faith in GOD is based upon us truly knowing GOD. Yes, we have utmost confidence and trust that GOD can do all things. But has GOD confirmed in our hearts that what we are requesting HE will do or do we hope HE will do?

What does it mean to have faith? Our thoughts turn to, “Do we have to have enough faith in GOD that so-and-so will happen?” We have to have faith in GOD because HE is the source of the power to make a certain thing happen. The Greek word used for faith refers to trust and a firm conviction that something is true. It is not trying to believe long and hard enough that a false concept will become true. We can look at salt in a salt shaker and hope and pray that it will become pepper. Can GOD turn salt in the shaker into pepper? YES, but only because HE wants the salt converted to pepper for HIS glory, honor, plan and purpose. A believer must have faith in GOD that HE can turn salt into pepper or any situation into a different situation, if HE chooses and it is according to HIS will.

I am convinced when a believer is in right relationship with GOD, whatever he/she asks will be done. It is because he/she has such a relationship with GOD through CHRIST that what is requested comes from a knowing that GOD approves. The Bible tells us in Romans 12:2:

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (KJV)

When a believer is in right relationship through the renewing of his/her mind, it brings his/her requests in harmony with GOD’S will.

Just because we have absolute confidence in GOD and believe that HE can provide what we request does not mean that HE will grant our request. However, when HE confirms in our heart that what we have requested will be done, it will be. There is a very fine line between hoping and knowing.
