Bible Study – Leadership – Overcome Your Fears – May 1, 2011

This lesson begins a new series entitled “Taking the Lead.”
The scripture for this lesson is Joshua 1:1-11, 16-18.
For the next five (5) weeks we will examine leadership. We are living in a time when the right kind of leadership is sorely needed in the world of government, business, churches, education, homes and the list goes on. GOD calls leaders to step up to the plate and allow HIM to direct them. Our study this month will explore fear of leadership, using your influence, credibility and integrity, pursuing self-serving agendas and mentoring. GOD calls women to positions of leadership, so it will not be a male dominated study. We will explore the leadership and influence of Queen Esther.


Power can corrupt and that is why it is vital that leaders, who are called of GOD, have a loving, intimate relationship with GOD through CHRIST. Leaders become the target of Satan. That is why Christian leaders must pray and stay founded in GOD’S Word, the Bible. Fellow Christians need to pray for their leaders. This includes their Spiritual leaders, as well as, leaders that impact the secular aspects of their lives.


Many people do not lead because of the fear of failure. This includes Christians. Our scripture will explore Joshua who had served with Moses. Moses had died and someone had to take up where Moses left off because the Israelites had not reached the land GOD had promised them. GOD still had much that needed to be done and HE and the Israelites needed a strong, faithful leader. The Israelites were about to enter the Promised Land.


A key point in leadership is who is leading - GOD or ego/flesh? When people try to make their plans GOD’S, there is a problem. This is why GOD tells HIS children to seek first the Kingdom GOD and HIS righteousness and then all things will be added to you. Most of us seek things and the more things we accumulate, the more blessed by GOD we are. That is wrong. GOD blesses with Spiritual wealth first and then material wealth MAY follow. Matthew 6:33-34 – JESUS was speaking:


33 But seek first the kingdom of God[17]and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. 34 Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.


GOD calls both women and men to be HIS leaders. Don’t let fear prevent you from serving, reject the call and miss a blessing. Fear the LORD by showing HIM reverence and respect but do not be afraid of what HE has called you to do. Accept the call knowing that HE equips, empowers and leads.


Let’s read Joshua 1:1-5: Encouragement of Joshua
1 After the death of Moses the LORD’s servant, the LORD spoke to Joshua[1] son of Nun, who had served Moses: 2 “Moses My servant is dead.[2] Now you and all the people prepare to cross over the Jordan to the land I am giving the Israelites. 3 I have given you every place where the sole of your foot treads, just as I promised Moses.[3] 4 Your territory will be from the wilderness and Lebanon to the great Euphrates River—all the land of the Hittites—and west to the Mediterranean Sea.[4][5] 5 No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. I will be with you, just as I was with Moses. I will not leave you or forsake you.[6]


The Promised Land had been in GOD’S plan for hundreds of years but HE needed to wait until the inhabitants of the land had reached full measure of sin before judgment would come to them. This is recorded in Genesis 15:15-16 - 15 But you (Abraham) will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a ripe old age. 16 In the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.”[12]


Moses had completed his part of GOD’S plan. GOD referred to Moses as “MY servant.” Now it was time for Joshua to complete his part of GOD’S plan. He had been in training under the tutelage of Moses and approval of GOD since he left Egypt.


We know that Moses could not enter the Promised Land because he had disobeyed GOD. But GOD let him see the land promised to Abraham and his descendants. As recorded in Deuteronomy 34: 4 -12:
4 The LORD then said to him (Moses), “This is the land I promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’[2] I have let you see it with your own eyes, but you will not cross into it.”[3]
5 So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. 6 And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor; but no one knows his grave to this day. 7 Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died. His eyes were not dim nor his natural vigor diminished. 8 And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. So the days of weeping and mourning for Moses ended. 9 Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the LORD had commanded Moses. 10 But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, 11 in all the signs and wonders which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt, before Pharaoh, before all his servants, and in all his land, 12 and by all that mighty power and all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.


Moses had mentored Joshua, his successor, as GOD led him.


Joshua was one of the twelve (12) spies who had gone into the Promised Land. He and Caleb were the only two (2) spies who gave a favorable report that with GOD’S help they could conquer the land flowing with milk and honey. This revealed Joshua’s heart toward GOD.


Numbers 14:6-9: (Joshua spied in the Promised Land)
6 But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh (juh FUH nuh), who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes; 7 and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: "The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. 8 "If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, 'a land which flows with milk and honey.' 9 "Only do not rebel against the LORD, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them."


Just because a Christian is called by GOD to accomplish HIS plan does not necessarily mean smooth sailing. It is often very difficult. A Christian’s character and commitment will likely be tested. The beauty is that after the test, the called Christian will emerge Spiritually stronger and mature. Even those who thought they were called and discover that they were not called will have a deeper understanding of their relationship with GOD through CHRIST.


GOD told Joshua that it was time for him and the people to prepare to cross the Jordon River. The entrance to the Promised Land was across the Jordon River. The Israelites had waited forty (40) years for this moment. The adults who had refused to go into the Promised Land forty (40) years earlier had died off. It was preparation time. GOD reaffirmed that the land was theirs to claim. The victory had been won, all they had to do was obey GOD, trust HIM and go claim what GOD had already secured for them.


Salvation is the same. JESUS has defeated Satan and defeated sin and conquered death. The victory has been won for every human. But each person must claim the victory by accepting JESUS as his/her personal SAVIOR. Once a person accepts JESUS as his/her SAVIOR then he/she has entered the Promised Land. There is still much to be done. The journey of sanctification begins at the moment of salvation.


When GOD calls, what is our response? When GOD calls, HE does not want HIS children to serve half heartedly but completely. There is no place for compromise. HE expects HIS instructions to be carried out to the letter. Think about it. What did GOD tell Joshua to do to capture Jericho? What if GOD told you to march around a walled city and blow a trumpet? GOD knows all things.


GOD called Joshua. GOD spoke to Joshua. Joshua had served along the side of Moses and GOD instructed Moses to commission Joshua to take over when he was gone. GOD announced the death of Moses to Joshua.


Joshua had been involved in or seen the hand of GOD lead Moses. He had observed the successes and the failures of Moses. He knew why GOD did not allow him to complete the mission of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land. He knew that GOD was GOD and that HE expected obedience to HIS commands.


GOD reconfirmed HIS support of Joshua, just as HE supported Moses. HE reconfirmed the territory which belonged to the Israelites but it had to be claimed. Joshua had seen firsthand the power, care and guidance of GOD when he served Moses. GOD promised that no one would be able to stand against him as long as he lived because GOD would be with him. GOD told Joshua in essence, “You can trust ME.”


However, there is one critical matter. Joshua must be obedient to GOD and trust GOD completely.


Let’s read Joshua 1:6-9:
6 “Be strong and courageous,[7] for you will distribute the land I swore to their fathers to give them as an inheritance.[8] 7 Above all, be strong and very courageous to carefully observe the whole instruction My servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or the left, so that you will have success wherever you go. 8 This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to recite it day and night, so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do. 9 Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous?[9] Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”


GOD told Joshua to be “strong and courageous.” Joshua’s strength and courage must be GOD centered and not self-centered. GOD repeated HIS instruction to be “strong and very courageous” and to observe the whole instruction. In this statement HE added “very” to courageous. GOD was giving Joshua the rules for success. In essence HE was saying, “Do not compromise one iota. Do not deviate from what you have been taught and what I command you to do. Moses gave you truth because it came from ME. Meditate on it, recite it, know it, understand it, trust it and apply it. If you want to succeed, then practice what is written in the book of instruction. When you are obedient to ME, then YOU have MY assurance that I will be with you wherever you go.”


This is a powerful message to Christians today. We have the complete message of salvation and all that is necessary to equip us to grow and mature Spiritually as given in GOD’S Word, the Bible. We are indwelled by the HOLY SPIRIT, WHO fully equips us, empowers, enlightens, sustains, assures, comforts and guides us as we obediently serve GOD. The Bible is still our book of instruction which GOD wants us to read, study, mediate upon, consult, trust and apply as we obediently serve GOD as led by the HOLY SPIRIT.


Moses mentored Joshua and helped prepare him for the task of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land. Who is your Spiritual mentor or who are you mentoring? Christians have the opportunity to mentor their children, grandchildren, neighbors, friends, relatives, co-workers and the list goes on, as GOD leads.

Let’s read Joshua 1:10-11 and 16-18: Joshua Prepares the People
10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people: 11 “Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Get provisions ready for yourselves, for within three days you will be crossing the Jordan to go in and take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you to inherit.’ ” 12 Joshua said to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh: 13 “Remember what Moses the LORD’s servant commanded you when he said, ‘The LORD your God will give you rest, and He will give you this land.’[10] 14 Your wives, young children, and livestock may remain in the land Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan.[11] But your fighting men must cross over in battle formation[12] ahead of your brothers[13] and help them 15 until the LORD gives our brothers rest, as [He has given]* you, and they too possess the land the LORD your God is giving them. You may then return to the land of your inheritance and take possession of what Moses the LORD’s servant gave you on the east side of the Jordan.” 16 They answered Joshua, “Everything you have commanded us we will do, and everywhere you send us we will go. 17 We will obey you, just as we obeyed Moses in everything. And may the LORD your God be with you, as He was with Moses. 18 Anyone who rebels against your order and does not obey your words in all that you command him, will be put to death. Above all, be strong and courageous!”[14]


It was time to take action. Joshua had officers to help him - delegation. He instructed them to tell the people they had three (3) days to prepare to cross the Jordon River. Crossing the Jordon River at this time was not as easy as it may sound because the Jordon River was at flood stage. So why cross at flood stage. Joshua had to trust GOD that this was the right moment. The Israelites numbered about two (2) million, so they did not just slip into the area without being noticed. Did the enemy of the Israelites conclude no one in their right mind would cross the Jordon River at flood stage? I think so. GOD knew it was the right time and HE had the power to get them across safely. Joshua had to trust GOD’S leadership and the people had to trust Joshua’s leadership and his obedience to GOD. Joshua had to be strong and courageous.


I imagine the safe crossing of the Jordon River re-enforced Joshua’s faith in the power of GOD and his relationship with GOD. Did this success prepare Joshua for his next test of faith in GOD? As GOD leads and directs us and we take small steps of faith, GOD increases our faith in HIM and HIS ability. Our relationship grows stronger and more intimate. In doing as we are led builds our relationship.


Just think if you were Joshua and GOD had instructed you to take your soldiers and march around the walls of Jericho for six (6) days and on the seventh day the walls would fall down. You were a trained military leader and fighting was what you did but walk around a wall and it will fall. This sounds so wimpy. This is recorded in Joshua 6:1-5 - The Conquest of Jericho
1 Now Jericho was strongly fortified because of the Israelites—no one leaving or entering. 2 The LORD said to Joshua, “Look, I have handed Jericho, its king, and its fighting men over to you. 3 March around the city with all the men of war, circling the city one time. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry seven ram’s-horn trumpets in front of the ark. But on the seventh day, march around the city seven times, while the priests blow the trumpets. 5 When there is a prolonged blast of the horn and you hear its sound, have all the people give a mighty shout. Then the city wall will collapse, and the people will advance, each man straight ahead.”


When you obediently serve GOD, there is no room to second guess HIS commands.

GOD told Joshua it was time. They had three (3) days to prepare. This was time to physically prepare and to prepare Spiritually for the journey that lay ahead.


The tribes of Reuben and Gad and half of the tribe of Manasseh had asked Moses if they could settle east of the Jordon. Moses agreed provided they helped those who crossed over the Jordon and to help them secure the Promised Land. Once the Promised Land was secure, they could return to the land they chose and settle there. They agreed to do that. In verses 12-15, Joshua reminded them of their commitment and they reconfirmed it. They reconfirmed their loyalty to Joshua. They also, told him to be strong and courageous because they knew what a daunting task was ahead of him.


GOD calls leaders to difficult tasks. But HE never calls without agreeing to be with the person called every step of the way. HE will provide what is needed and HE will open the doors needed. The person called has the responsibility to be obedient to GOD’S commands and to stay focused upon his/her relationship with GOD through CHRIST – prayer, Bible study, meditating upon HIS Word. Small steps of faith lead to larger steps of faith. Those called are not to become self-sufficient but to stay focused upon GOD regardless. They must keep in mind that their success is from GOD.


Is someone watching your life and observing what you do? Maintain your relationship with CHRIST. HE provides the strength and the consistency in your life through the right relationship with HIM.


In those days victory was attributed to the GOD the victor worshiped. The Israelites carried the Ark before them as they crossed the Jordon River and as they marched around the walls of Jericho. It would be obvious to the enemy that the Ark was their religious symbol. When the Israelites marched around the walls of Jericho with the Ark, the inhabitants of Jericho must have thought it amusing. Their city was secure. But when the walls came tumbling down it startled them and defeated them because the GOD of the Israelites had a power they had never witnessed before.


This is a message to Christians. Their FATHER is the same GOD of the Old and New Testament. HIS power is awesome and HIS care is overwhelming. HE defeats the foes before them and conquers that which needs to be conquered. Their part is to go and claim the victory.

How big is your GOD? Is HE big enough to bring the walls down that prevents you from conquering the Promised Land? Do others know you are a Christian and you serve a living SAVIOR? Are you the salt and light that CHRIST desires for you to be? Blessings as you lead and as HE leads you.

Bible Study – Maze of Grief – Encounter the Risen Lord – April 24, 2011

This is our final lesson in our series “Negotiating the Maze of Grief.”
Our scripture is John 20:1-18.
Our series of study has led us to consider several aspects of grief. It is fitting that our final lesson focuses upon the resurrection of JESUS. There are times that our grief can change from great sorrow to joy. There are many people hurting during these days because they cannot find a job and their bills continue to mount. This would grieve most anyone. But then they get a call or letter telling them that they are being offered a job that suits them to the tee and will pay them a good salary with benefits. WOW!!! That is good news and in an instant their grief turns to joy.


We will see how grief turns to joy when those who loved JESUS discover that HE had been raised from the dead. The tomb was empty.


We need to briefly consider all four (4) gospels, Matthew- Chapter 27, Mark – Chapter 15, Luke – Chapter 23 and John – Chapter 19 to get the full picture of the events leading up to this resurrection Sunday.


JESUS was crucified on Friday and died on Friday. HE was crucified about 9:00 AM; darkness fell over the land beginning at 12:00 noon until 3:00 PM. JESUS died at 3:00 PM. Three (3) PM began the first evening and the second evening began at 6:00 PM. It was against Jewish law for a body to hang on a tree (cross) over night. This was Passover; therefore, it was especially critical that no dead body remain on the tree (cross) after sundown. Hence, Joseph and Nicodemus had to move quickly to get the body prepared and buried before 6 PM.


After 3:00 PM Joseph of Arimathea, a secret follower of JESUS, asked for the body of JESUS. Pilot had to make sure JESUS was dead and he asked a centurion to confirm JESUS’ death. The Roman soldiers had broken the legs of those who had been crucified, except they saw that JESUS appeared dead and they pierced JESUS’ side with a spear to make sure. Water and blood flowed out. They confirmed to Pilot that HE was dead. JESUS’ body was released to Joseph of Arimathea.


Joseph was a wealthy man and was also a member of the powerful Sanhedrin. We also learn that Nicodemus who was a member of the Sanhedrin was the religious leader who came to talk to JESUS at night as recorded in John Chapter 3. He accompanied Joseph to bury the body of JESUS. They took HIM to a tomb owned by Joseph. The tomb was a cave hued out from rock. It had a round stone wheel which could be rolled in a track to seal the entrance to the tomb. They took 75 pounds of spices with them to the tomb to place on the body to help preserve it and wrapped it with linen. The stone was rolled into place and sealed. Guards were placed there to guard the tomb to ensure that JESUS’ disciples did not steal HIS body and claim a false resurrection. It is not clear if the guards were Roman or temple but the tomb was guarded.


Let’s read John 20:1-10: The Empty Tomb
1 On the first day of the week (Sunday) • Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone had been removed[1] from the tomb. 2 So she ran to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put Him!” 3 At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb. 4 The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first. 5 Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, yet he did not go in. 6 Then, following him, Simon Peter came also. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there. 7 The wrapping that had been on His head was not lying with the linen cloths but was folded up in a separate place by itself. 8 The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then entered the tomb, saw, and believed. 9 For they still did not understand the Scripture that He must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went home again.


As mentioned earlier, we need to study all four (4) gospels to get the full picture of this first discovery that JESUS was no longer in the tomb. In John’s account he tells us that on the first day of the week, Sunday, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb of JESUS early that morning while it was still dark.


The Jews worshipped on Saturday, which was their seventh day or Sabbath. Thus the first day of the week would be our Sunday. Mary Magdalene went to the tomb of JESUS. Mary and the other Mary, not the mother of JESUS, had watched Joseph and Nicodemus and knew where they had placed JESUS’ body. Matthew tells us that the other Mary went with Mary Magdalene that morning. Mark tells us that Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome brought spices that morning to continue the embalming process.


They were concerned about who would roll the large stone away from the entrance to the tomb. But GOD had already taken care of that obstacle for them. Often, GOD has prepared the way when we obediently serve HIM. Our part is to go; HIS part is to prepare the way.


As you can see, we need to study all four (4) gospels to get the complete picture of what is happening during this critical discovery – JESUS HAS RISEN!!! THE TOMB IS EMPTY!!!


You can only imagine the heavy heart and many questions that the women and disciples had running through their minds since the crucifixion of JESUS. As Mary Magdalene approached the tomb, what was running through her mind? Was it thoughts of the time JESUS delivered her from the seven (7) demons? Was she puzzled why JESUS had so much power, yet HE could not save Himself? Gee, I miss HIM so much? Why? Why?


Then she saw that the stone had been rolled away and the tomb was open! What was going on, someone had taken the body of my JESUS’. Panic might have run though her mind. She ran to tell the disciples that someone has taken the body of JESUS. The tomb was empty, according to John’s gospel. Yet, if we look at the other gospel writers we learn that the tomb had angels present.


Here we have to speculate. We know that other women accompanied Mary Magdalene that morning as they went to the tomb to finish the embalming process. Mary Magdalene was horror struck when she saw the stone rolled away for the entrance the tomb. Her first thoughts were someone has taken the body of my JESUS!!! So she ran to tell the disciples who she likely thought could do more in locating HIS body than a bunch of women. We have to keep in mind this was a man’s world and it is GOD’S way of showing HIS unbiased love for all by revealing the resurrection of JESUS to women over men.


We see that Peter, Mister impetuous, and the disciple whom JESUS loved, John, sprang into action. John outran Peter to the tomb. John looked into the empty and believed but it seems that Peter was not so quick to believe that JESUS had been resurrected. But John says they still did not have a complete understanding of what had happened. They return home. They were surely pondering what had happened to JESUS. But what did Mary Magdalene do? Let’s find out.


Let’s read John 20:11-15: Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord
11 But Mary stood outside facing the tomb, crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 She saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet, where Jesus’ body had been lying. 13 They said to her, “• Woman, why are you crying?” “Because they’ve taken away my Lord,” she told them, “and I don’t know where they’ve put Him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not know it was Jesus. 15 “Woman,” Jesus said to her, “why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Supposing He was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you’ve removed Him, tell me where you’ve put Him, and I will take Him away.”


Mary returned to the tomb and was standing outside of the tomb crying. She looked into the tomb and saw the two (2) angels. The angels asked her, “Why are you crying? She told them, “Because they’ve taken away my Lord and I don’t know where they’ve put Him.” Then she turned and saw a man standing there. The man called her “woman” and she thought the man was the gardener. HE asked her two (2) questions – “Why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Mary’s response was, “Sir, if you’ve removed Him, tell me where you’ve put Him, and I will take Him away.”


She did not respond when JESUS called her “woman.” She did not answer HIS questions. She just wanted to know where her JESUS was. She was determined to find HIM. When we seek JESUS, HE may ask us “Why are you broken hearted? Why are seeking ME? Who are you looking for?” HE will reveal Himself to those who seek HIM.


Mary Magdalene wanted to know, “If you took HIM, where is HE? I will take HIM away.” This to me is so sweet and shows the love that she had for JESUS. We do not know how strong she was but all she wanted was for the gardener to show her where HE had placed JESUS and she would take HIM. Mary Magdalene was distraught. Her world had crumbled. She was grieving. It is conceivable that because she was a woman and a man was speaking to her that she did not look directly into HIS face. Oh, but what followers is priceless!!!


Let’s read John 20:16-18:
16 Jesus said, “Mary.” Turning around, she said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!”[2]—which means “Teacher.” 17 “Don’t cling to Me,” Jesus told her, “for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to My brothers and tell them that I am ascending to My Father and your Father—to My God and your God.” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them what[3] He had said to her.


All JESUS had to do was to speak her name. When JESUS said “woman” it did not command her attention but when HE said “Mary,” that was a different story. I think when HE spoke her name, it revealed the intimate relationship she had with JESUS. When HE said, “Mary” her despair changed in an instant to a joy that was incomprehensible. She recognized HIM as her “Teacher” and her “LORD.”


Did you know that GOD knows your name? When CHRIST referred to Mary Magdalene as “woman” that was generic but when HE said “Mary” that was personal, loving and tender. JESUS had taught “MY sheep will know MY voice.” We love for people to know us by name and when it is GOD that knows our name, it is awesome. CHRIST’S death was personal. HE died for you. Encounter the living SAVIOR today by asking HIM to forgive you for your sins and to come into your life right now


Verse 17 may seem like harsh words but JESUS had unfinished business. HE had taught about what was going to happen to HIM and about the need for HIM to go away in order for the HOLY SPIRIT to be able to return to indwell all believers. Such scripture is copied below:


John 14:25: JESUS was speaking:
25 “I have spoken these things to you while I remain with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit—the Father will send Him in My name—will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.


John15:26: JESUS was speaking:
26 “When the • Counselor comes, the One I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father—He will testify about Me.


John 16:7-16: JESUS was speaking:
7 Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the • Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you. 8 When He comes, He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: 9 about sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father[3]and you will no longer see Me; 11 and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. 12 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify Me, because He will take from what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 Everything the Father has is Mine. This is why I told you that He takes from what is Mine and will declare it to you.


Sorrow Turned to Joy
16 “A little while and you will no longer see Me; again a little while and you will see Me.”[4]


Mary could have thought this was HIS second coming. The fact was, she had found HIM and was determined not to lose HIM again. JESUS uttered the words “I have not yet ascended to the Father” and HE clarified that HIS passion established a new relationship between HIM and GOD and all who would believe in HIM.


JESUS confirmed a Christian’s relationship to HIM and GOD, the FATHER as Brother/Son-ship and Brother/Daughter-ship. HE said, “I am ascending to My Father and your Father—to My God and your God.”


As already mentioned, JESUS had unfinished business. HIS and Mary’s physical relationship had to change to a Spiritual relationship. HE had to ascend into heaven so the FATHER could send the HOLY SPIRIT back to earth to indwell all who would believe in HIM. Then all who had become or would become born-again Christians would have HIS presence 24/7 indwelling them. JESUS is for all who will believe in HIM. Christians are to go and tell others about HIM. Once they accept CHRIST as their SAVIOR, they need to tell others what HE has done for them.


Mary Magdalene had encountered JESUS and ran to tell the Good News, “I have seen the LORD.” And she told them what HE had said to her. Christians are to tell others about JESUS, as the HOLY SPIRIT leads them.


Our study has been on grief. Only JESUS can turn grief into unspeakable joy. When you know HIM and HE knows you, when HE speaks your name it is overwhelming. Such comfort, peace and joy sweeps over you. When you know this world is not your final home and HE has prepared a place for you in heaven it makes this life upon earth more palatable. We still grieve when bad things happen. Let GOD comfort you though the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT.


Do you know JESUS as your SAVIOR? If not, right now is the best moment to ask HIM to forgive you for your sins, acknowledge that HE died for your sins and ask HIM to come into your life. If you have done that, then thank HIM for saving you and go and tell someone what you have done.


MAKE THIS A HAPPY EASTER BY ACCEPTING JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR SAVIOR. IF YOU ARE ALREADY A CHRISTIAN BUT HAVE NOT BEEN LIVING FOR HIM, THEN REDEDICATE YOUR LIFE TO HIM. HE HAS RISEN. THE TOMB IS EMPTY!

Bible Study – Grief – Receive Comfort – Give Comfort – April 17, 2011

This is lesson three (3) in our series entitled “Negotiating the Maze of Grief.”
Our scripture is 2 Corinthians 1:1-11.
Receiving and giving comfort are a part of life’s journey. It is a calling for the Christian and a choice for the non-Christian. Who better to give comfort than those who have received comfort? Some people may say, “I understand what you are going through because I have been there.” Others may say, “I don’t understand what you are going through because I have never gone through what you are experiencing but I will pray with you and support you.” These statements are often meaningless to those going through a time of grief because they believe their circumstances are different. Just being available and listening often helps those experiencing grief. Let the LORD lead you as you minister to others and HE will give the words of comfort.


Grief can come as the result of sin. Christians need to keep in mind that GOD hates sin but loves the sinner. When a fellow Christian becomes involved in sin that is the time those of us who know the truth need to reach out to him or her. The Bible is very clear that those who reach out to a brother or sister in sin must keep a very close eye upon himself or herself so that they are not lured into that sin.


Often, those who have been through times of suffering will recall how GOD helped them. It may be that they went through a time of questioning GOD or railing against GOD and later discover the comfort that only GOD can provide. I know that I have told GOD that “I had a thing or two that I would discuss with HIM when I get to heaven.” Since then, I have grown Spiritually and may not understand why but have learned to trust HIM.


GOD has a plan and purpose for all of HIS children. HE gives them the freedom to choose and HE teaches through the choices they make. HIS goal is perfecting them for HIS service. Life’s circumstances are boot camp for HIS children to be fully equipped to respond to HIS call for service.


Let’s read 2 Corinthians 1:1-3: Greeting
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will, and Timothy our[1] brother: To God’s church at Corinth, with all the saints who are throughout Achaia (uh KAY yuh). 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.


The God of Comfort
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort.


Paul was writing to the Christians in Corinth in the region of Achaia (uh KAY yuh). Corinth was the capital city of the region and was a thriving city of commerce. It was a seaport city. It was wicked, multicultural and open to many religions, especially the worship of Dianna. Its’ many pagan temples encouraged sexual immorality.


Paul had written two (2) other letters to the Corinthians, which have been lost. But the two (2) letters we do know about gives us plenty to consider.


Paul referred to himself as an Apostle of JESUS CHRIST. A question regarding his apostleship had come up and Paul needed to establish his authority as an Apostle. An Apostle was a disciple who had seen JESUS and had been called to spread the Good News of salvation. Paul saw JESUS on the road to Damascus and JESUS called him to spread the Gospel to the Gentiles.


Paul included Timothy in the greeting as a witness to what Paul was writing.


Paul was writing to the Christians in Corinth and the surrounding area.


In verse 2, Paul made it clear that the GOD Christians serve is the FATHER of JESUS CHRIST, as well as, the FATHER of Christians.


In verse 3, since salvation and the miracle of rebirth come through CHRIST, Christians have the same FATHER. Salvation comes as the result of GOD’S mercy or grace. GOD is the source of salvation and because Christians are born into HIS family, HIS children will experience suffering. However, just as suffering will be a natural part of following CHRIST, GOD will comfort all Christians because HE is the source of all true lasting comfort. Non-Christians can comfort each other but real comfort comes from the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT.


If you are like me, I do not like to think about suffering but many Christians around the world are suffering today because they are Christians. Many have suffered, been tortured and died for CHRIST. A Christian’s death is not the atoning death of CHRIST. CHRIST gave HIS life once and for all who would believe in HIM to pay the penalty for sin and to redeem all who would believe upon HIM as their SAVIOR.


There is physical and mental suffering but there is also suffering which comes from the anguish that comes from the heart knowledge of salvation, which loved ones reject. Christians become keenly aware of the Spiritually lost souls around them and throughout the world and grieve over those who reject CHRIST. Christians know the truth and desire for all to receive CHRIST as their SAVIOR.


Paul prepared the basis for Christians to better understand why they go through times of suffering and trials.


Let’s read 2 Corinthians 1:4-7:
4 He comforts us in all our affliction,[2] so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so our comfort overflows through Christ. 6 If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is experienced in the endurance of the same sufferings that we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that as you share in the sufferings, so you will share in the comfort.


This scripture is the heart of our study. GOD comforts us, HIS children, when we are afflicted. Affliction means living under pressure. Normal living, as a human, in the world produces all sorts of problems. Being a Christian, in a world hostile to Christians, compounds those problems. Christians often forget who they are in CHRIST and the power that is available to them during times of affliction.


There are times GOD intervenes in our lives and we know that we have been spared a bad outcome. But there are times GOD allows us to go through bad times. Paul tells us why.


GOD allows Christians to go through situations and circumstances so they can experience HIS power, comfort and assurance so they can help others. Christians can empathize with those going through troubling times in their lives when they have experienced them.


Notice the number of times Paul used the word “comfort.” Just as suffering comes in a Christian’s life, so will comfort. Just as there are physical laws such as gravity, there are Spiritual assurances such as suffering results in GOD’S comfort, which enables Christians to help others.


Suffering can be a two-way street. GOD will not allow HIS children to be tempted beyond their ability to withstand. The ordeal which we go through may be to bring us into a closer relationship with HIM, which in turn may result in us being equipped to help others. When we go through situations, it is not fun but we have to trust that it is for a purpose. Now, we have to be careful that the situation we are going through is not the result of our sin. If we have sinned, we need to confess it to GOD, stop doing it, and seek GOD’S help.


Romans 8: 28 - 28 We know that all things work together[16] for the good[17] of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose. GOD is in all things working to bring about the best result when Christians are involved. This is not a get out of jail free card because Christians may suffer the consequences for the things they do. But HIS children are assured that HE is involved in their lives, which could be a learning experience.


In verse 6, Paul touches on this principle when he writes, “it is for your comfort and salvation.” Christians are on a journey. Our journey begins the instant we ask CHRIST to forgive us for our sins and are born into GOD’S family. We are set aside for the purposes of GOD, which is sanctification or to be made more saint like. GOD’S goal for every child of HIS is for him or her to be made into the image of HIS SON JESUS. This process will be fully achieved the instant we leave this earth and meet HIM in heaven. At that instant a Christian’s salvation is complete. Until then Christians live upon earth either following the will of their FATHER or the will of the flesh.


It is GOD’S desire that HIS children follow HIS will because HE knows the rewards that await those who are obedient. None of us like to go through times of suffering but we have the assurance that GOD will comfort us when we do and that HE will use it according to HIS plan and purpose. It may be for our own good, as well as, to help others in times of suffering. Remember we were not made for time but for eternity. Earth is our training ground.


Let’s read 2 Corinthians 1:8-11:
8 For we don’t want you to be unaware, brothers, of our affliction that took place in the province of • Asia: we were completely overwhelmed—beyond our strength—so that we even despaired of life. 9 However, we personally had a death sentence within ourselves so that we would not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead. 10 He has delivered us from such a terrible death, and He will deliver us; we have placed our hope in Him that He will deliver us again. 11 And you can join in helping with prayer for us, so that thanks may be given by many[3] on our[4] behalf for the gift that came to us through [the prayers of]* many.


Paul writes of a time when he and those with him faced a dire situation in Asia. They thought they would die and in fact considered them as good as dead. It was a traumatic time. They felt helpless and were sure they would die but they trusted GOD and HE delivered them.


We are not sure of the exact situation in which they were involved. One such incident was when Paul had been preaching the gospel of CHRIST in Asia or the region we know today as Turkey. This area included Ephesus, Lycia, Galatia and Bithynia. When Paul was preaching in an area around Ephesus, the silversmiths who made idols of the Greek goddess Artemis/Roman goddess Dianna became very upset with this new movement called “the Way” because it threatened their business. “The Way” was what Christians were called before they were called Christians. This event is recorded in Acts 19:23-41:
23 During that time there was a major[2] disturbance about the Way (Name for the Christian movement before it was known as Christianity). 24 For a person named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis,[3] provided a great deal of[4] business for the craftsmen. 25 When he had assembled them, as well as the workers engaged in this type of business, he said: “Men, you know that our prosperity is derived from this business. 26 You both see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost the whole province of • Asia, this man Paul has persuaded and misled a considerable number of people by saying that gods made by hand are not gods! 27 So not only do we run a risk that our business may be discredited, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be despised and her magnificence come to the verge of ruin—the very one whom the whole province of • Asia and the world adore.” 28 When they had heard this, they were filled with rage and began to cry out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 29 So the city was filled with confusion; and they rushed all together into the amphitheater, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul’s traveling companions. 30 Though Paul wanted to go in before the people, the disciples did not let him. 31 Even some of the provincial officials of • Asia, who were his friends, sent word to him, pleading with him not to take a chance by going[5] into the amphitheater. 32 Meanwhile, some were shouting one thing and some another, because the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together. 33 Then some of the crowd gave Alexander advice when the Jews pushed him to the front. So motioning with his hand, Alexander wanted to make his defense to the people. 34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a united cry went up from all of them for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 35 However, when the city clerk had calmed the crowd down, he said, “Men of Ephesus! What man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is the temple guardian of the great[6] Artemis, and of the image that fell from heaven? 36 Therefore, since these things are undeniable, you must keep calm and not do anything rash. 37 For you have brought these men here who are not temple robbers or blasphemers of our[7] goddess. 38 So if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a case against anyone, the courts are in session, and there are • proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another. 39 But if you want something else, it must be decided in a legal assembly. 40 In fact, we run a risk of being charged with rioting for what happened today, since there is no justification that we can give as a reason for this disorderly gathering.” 41 After saying this, he (the city clerk) dismissed the assembly.


In verses 10-11, Paul was telling his fellow Christians that they can participate in their ministry through prayer. This is a message to Christians today. All Christians can pray. They can pray for missionaries, ministries and fellow Christians. Christians can pray through the news they hear each day. They can pray for people involved in tragedies, earthquakes, hurricanes, various accidents and they can pray for emergency personnel every time they hear a siren and the victims or circumstances they will be encountering. They can pray for the medical personnel who will tend to the injured and the list goes on.


Christians have much to do – giving and receiving comfort. Included in comfort is prayer. Christians are called to pray, comfort and minister to others as GOD leads them and as GOD has ministered and comforted them. When you are prompted to pray, PRAY!!!

Bible Study – Maze of Grief – Recognize God’s Presence – April 10, 2011

This is lesson two (2) in our series entitled “Negotiating the Maze of Grief.”
Our scripture is Psalm 31:1-10, 14-16, 21-24.
As mentioned in last week’s study, grief results from a number of events in our lives – loss of life, loss of health, loss of friendship(s), loss of companionship, loss of fellowship, loss of freedom, loss of innocence, loss of opportunity and the list goes on. Grief covers more than loss of life and can be just as traumatic.


This week we will consider grief coming from outside sources making our lives miserable. Does GOD care when that happens to us? YES!!! How can HE come to our aid? Our scripture is taken from Psalm 31. This Psalm was written by David. We are not sure when in David’s life he wrote it. GOD considered David to be a man after HIS Own Heart. We know that even though David was a man after GOD’S Own Heart, David had the freedom to choose. As a result, David had many troubles during his life’s journey. Some trouble came as the result of his faithfully serving King Saul and other troubles came as the result of David’s sin. Let’s explore.


Let’s read Psalm 31:1-10: A Plea for Protection
For the choir director. A Davidic psalm.
1 LORD, I seek refuge in You; let me never be disgraced. Save me by Your righteousness. 2 Listen closely to me; rescue me quickly. Be a rock of refuge for me, a mountain fortress to save me. 3 For You are my rock and my fortress;[1]You lead and guide me because of Your name.[2]4 You will free me from the net[3]that is secretly set for me, for You are my refuge. 5 Into Your hand I entrust my spirit;[4]You redeem[5] me, LORD, God of truth. 6 I[6] hate those who are devoted to worthless idols, but I trust in the LORD. 7 I will rejoice and be glad in Your faithful love because You have seen my affliction. You have known the troubles of my life 8 and have not handed me over to the enemy. You have set my feet in a spacious place. 9 Be gracious to me, LORD, because I am in distress; my eyes are worn out from angry sorrow— my whole being[7] as well. 10 Indeed, my life is consumed with grief, and my years with groaning; my strength has failed because of my sinfulness,[8]and my bones waste away.

In verses 1-4, David confirmed his faith and dependence upon GOD in the midst of his troubles. David was under distress from others. He trusted GOD to keep him from being trapped in a hidden net set to capture him. Hunters would hide a net so that when the prey came along they would be caught in the net. David trusted GOD to guide his paths so that he would not be caught by those setting a snare for him. Even if he did get caught, he trusted GOD to help him get free of the trap.


I know of a time that a snare had been set for me and GOD guided me through it. I never knew what was going on until after the fact. When it was revealed and I had the joy of seeing what HE had done without even my knowledge of what was going on.


Verse 5 is an interesting verse. Let’s look at Luke 23:46:
46 And Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I entrust My spirit.”[20] Saying this, He breathed His last.


JESUS uttered the words which David had written in Psalm 31:5 as HE hung upon the cross and gave HIS life for us.


David continued to express his complete trust and confidence in GOD to deliver him from his situation. In verse 6, David confirmed his faith in GOD and not some worthless idol. Idols are nothing but GOD sees all, knows all, is everywhere and is all powerful.


It seems that most, if not all, of David’s earthly relationships had gone bad. People had turned against him in every direction. He felt abandoned by every human relationship except for his security and relationship that he had in GOD. Sometimes Christians may feel that they have been abandoned but GOD is always present. Sin may block our fellowship with HIM but HE is there and all we have to do is confess our sin and call upon HIM. HE never leaves HIS children or forsakes them. That is security.


Have you ever felt that everyone around you were against you? During such a time, who or what do you reach for – alcohol, drugs, food, a trusted friend or your faith in GOD through CHRIST? David made it clear that he found solace in knowing GOD. Knowing GOD is critical. David had experienced the total love and care of GOD in many situations as he journeyed through life. He sought GOD’S help and he had built an intimate relationship with GOD through good times and bad. He saw the hand of GOD come to his aid many times. He reflected back to those times and found comfort. It was like he needed to remind himself of GOD’S protective care. Such experience reassured him that he could trust GOD in this situation. David had built a genuine intimate, loving relationship with GOD.


If you have never experienced GOD’S comfort and care and you are experiencing a time of trial, this may be your first opportunity to trust GOD. Look to HIM and talk to HIM about your situation. If you have sinned, then confess your sin and turn from it (1 John 1:9) The following scripture comes to mind which is found in Proverbs 3:5-6 - 5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (KJV)


David had experienced GOD delivering him from a tight situation when he felt boxed in. GOD provided him the space to move and escape if necessary. David had wept over his situation until his eyes hurt and he had grieved over it so much that he felt his sorrow to his very bones or his very core. In essence, David had repented from whatever it was that was troubling him; therefore, there was no un-confessed sin in his life that would hinder his relationship with GOD.


David had done all he knew to do and he was weak and weary. Only GOD could deliver him from his situation. David trusted GOD fully to help him even if what he had done was wrong. GOD stands ready to help all who called upon HIM. HE helps those in need of salvation and HE helps HIS children. HE expects all to acknowledge and confess their sin, if that is the case. HE will come to their aid when asked. But they may have to live with the consequences of what they have done for the rest of their lives. But HE will even help HIS children do that.


Let’s read Psalm 31:14-16:
14 But I trust in You, LORD; I say, “You are my God.” 15 The course of my life is in Your power; deliver me from the power of my enemies and from my persecutors. 16 Show Your favor to Your servant; save me by Your faithful love.


David again expressed his trust in GOD to lead and direct his life. HE asked GOD to deliver him from his enemies and those who were persecuting him. You can see an element of “I worship YOU and YOU alone. I do not worship or place my trust in idols. However, those who are treating me like they are worship idols and don’t acknowledge YOU. Therefore, show them that I belong to YOU by delivering me.”


Many of us have likely prayed such a prayer. Sometimes GOD answers it and comes to our aid. Sometimes HE does not. We have to be honest about the situation we are in. Is it something we have caused? Are we testing GOD by asking HIM to intervene in our behalf? Is there something we need to confess to GOD or ask someone to forgive us for what we have done? It can get complicated. Yet, when we pray and ask GOD to come to our aid and HE does nothing, we usually get upset with HIM. I know it has happened to me. I had to take matters into my own hands. That was a big mistake.


GOD had remained silent but I was impatient. Taking matters into my own hands took them out of GOD’S and it was a mistake. But GOD allows us to do that to teach us a lesson. Will I do it again, probably? In some situations that I have prayed about, I am still waiting for an answer. We need to consider that our answer may come from GOD through our spouse or a trusted friend. Will we see that as an answer to prayer? The toughest is to wait upon the LORD.


The Bible tells us to seek wise counsel. Do we throw GOD out when HE does not jump when we say jump? NO! GOD may be testing us and teaching us to wait upon HIM. We may have the answer and we do not want to do it. When that is the case, HE will not change HIS answer. We may move on based upon our own notions. When we do it will likely be a learning experience to wait upon HIM.


We have to trust that HE is working and HE has a plan that will come together according to HIS timing. It may be that we need to work on something in our lives which can only come about as the result of us experiencing this circumstance or situation. Also, some of us are stubborn, like me, and want GOD to respond our way. When HE responds differently, we reject it. This reveals our Spiritual immaturity and it is time for a Spiritual tune-up.


Let’s read Psalm 31:21-24:
21 May the LORD be praised, for He has wonderfully shown His faithful love to me in a city under siege.[13]22 In my alarm I had said, “I am cut off from Your sight.” But You heard the sound of my pleading when I cried to You for help. 23 Love the LORD, all His faithful ones. The LORD protects the loyal, but fully repays the arrogant. 24 Be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the LORD.


David recalled the times when GOD came to his aid, even when he did not think GOD heard him. He had felt cut off from GOD but GOD heard him and came to his rescue. The message is that GOD always hears HIS children.


There are times when we have to go back to those times when we knew that GOD had intervened in our lives. GOD cares and watches over us. HE may choose to allow us to go through a time of grief in order for us to deal with things in our lives that need to be dealt with. This is in order for us to have a closer relationship with HIM which may extend to others. These are not pleasant times. GOD’S lessons often are very difficult but in retrospect they are vital for our Spiritual growth and maturity.


As Dr. Vance Havner used to say, “Christians have to practice in the dark what they have learned in the light.”

Bible Study – Maze of Grief – Balance Grief with Hope – April 3, 2011

This begins a new series of study entitled “Negotiating the Maze of Grief.”
Our scripture is John 11:20-27, 32-36, 43-44.

We begin a new series of study on grief. People grieve in many ways. We grieve over the loss of something material or relational which we consider valuable, such as a legal paper, lottery ticket, a ring, a picture, a house, a job, a person, divorce, unfaithfulness, the death of a child or spouse, a pet, a friendship and the list goes on. Of these, losing a person is the most difficult loss with which to contend. We can lose people through mysterious circumstances, arguments, divorce and death. It is grievous when we lose a loved one through death, especially a child. Our study for this month will focus upon a variety of scriptures. During times of grief, are we as Christians drawn closer to GOD through CHRIST or do we retreat and blame or curse GOD?


Christians must keep in mind that GOD is sovereign. Realizing the sovereignty of GOD gives us hope. The Bible states in Isaiah 55:8-9:
8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not My ways.” [This is]* the LORD’s declaration.
9 “For as heaven is higher than earth, so My ways are higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.


GOD is GOD and HE is omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent and that is why HE is sovereign. People are myopic, selfish and self-serving. GOD is love and responds with the best interest of the person and his/her loved ones in mind. Does this take the sting out of death? NO!!! Grief is a natural response to losing a loved one in death. In Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 we find the “The Mystery of Time”:


1 There is an occasion for everything, and a time for every activity under heaven: 2 a time to give birth and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot;[1]3 a time to kill and a time to heal; a time to tear down and a time to build; 4 a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance; 5 a time to throw stones and a time to gather stones;[2]a time to embrace and a time to avoid embracing; 6 a time to search and a time to count as lost; a time to keep and a time to throw away; 7 a time to tear and a time to sew; a time to be silent and a time to speak; 8 a time to love and a time to hate; a time for war and a time for peace.

We need to keep in mind that death is the result of sin. When man sinned, death and decay entered into the world. GOD intended for mankind to live in a perpetual Garden of Eden. Because man sinned, death entered the world. HE knew that the consequences of sin would be eternal death for mankind. GOD had a plan before HE created the world to redeem mankind from eternal death. GOD allowed HIS ONLY SON, JESUS to leave heaven and come to earth, be born, live as a human and give HIS life through the shedding of HIS blood to redeem all who would believe on HIM. JESUS had the freedom to choose to sin or to remain sinless. HE was tempted in all ways as humans. HE remained sinless and thus was the perfect sacrifice to pay for the sins of mankind. HIS shed blood paid for and broke the sin barrier between man and GOD. All any person has to do is believe that HE gave HIS life for him/her - ask HIM for forgiveness and to come into his/her life. When a person does that he/she is born into GOD’S family forever. This is the miracle of being born-again.


It is difficult for most of us to see the value in tragedy - only GOD from HIS vantage point knows the end result of a tragedy.


I remember years ago getting very upset over the death of a person a number of us had been praying for. This was during what I refer to as my adolescent Spiritual period when I thought GOD had to answer all of my prayers according to my request. In fact, we (a small group of Christians) had prayed for several people and they all had died and I had had enough. It was time for the great Spiritual me to have a serious talk with GOD. Well, I did and when I shut up HE had a few words for me.


I told GOD how upset I was with HIM about these people dying. HE let me finish my lecture. I will give you the modified version. HE said, “Do you recall a certain person who we had been praying for?” I said, “Yes.” This lady had cancer and died. HE said, “I did not want her to have cancer but she was willing to endure cancer if it fit into MY plan and glorified ME.” This lady had received treatment for cancer but it had not worked. This was a number of years ago and treatment has advanced since then. Of course, I believe GOD could have healed her. She was a wonderful Christian lady. HE said, “She was willing to give her life serving ME, whatever the cost to her. Only eternity will reveal the lives of doctors, nurses, friends and those who met her that she touched because of her witness during this time. She was like a missionary who had been captured by a hostile tribe and given her life for ME. She was like a martyr and when she died, I met her and said, “Well done good and faithful servant.” We turned and walked down the streets of gold that were lined with the saints cheering for her because she had remained faithful and she had overcome.” Then HE asked me a question. “Would you deny that to anyone?” In shame, I responded. “NO.” GOD has prepared a homecoming that far exceeds our wildest imagination for those who faithfully follow HIM to the end.

I know this is my encounter and I know it is hard to accept someone else’s experience because it is not backed up with scripture. So take it as information.


Our scripture focuses upon JESUS raising Lazarus from the dead. We need to begin with some background scripture leading into this event which is found in John 11:1-19:  Lazarus Dies at Bethany
1 Now a man was sick, Lazarus, from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair,[1] and it was her brother Lazarus who was sick. 3 So the sisters sent a message to Him: “Lord, the one You love is sick.” 4 When Jesus heard it, He said, “This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” 5 (Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus.) 6 So when He heard that he was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was. 7 Then after that, He said to the disciples, “Let’s go to Judea again.” 8 “• Rabbi,” the disciples told Him, “just now the Jews tried to stone You, and You’re going there again?” 9 “Aren’t there 12 hours in a day?” Jesus answered. “If anyone walks during the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 If anyone walks during the night, he does stumble, because the light is not in him.” 11 He said this, and then He told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen • asleep, but I’m on My way to wake him up.” 12 Then the disciples said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well.” 13 Jesus, however, was speaking about his death, but they thought He was speaking about natural sleep. 14 So Jesus then told them plainly, “Lazarus has died. 15 I’m glad for you that I wasn’t there so that you may believe. But let’s go to him.” 16 Then Thomas (called “Twin”) said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go so that we may die with Him.”


The Resurrection and the Life
17 When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem (about two miles[2] away). 19 Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.


JESUS was friends of Lazarus and his sisters Martha and Mary. They had a close relationship. Lazarus became ill. Mary and Martha sent word to JESUS that Lazarus was sick.


JESUS and these three (3) had a close bond of love. JESUS had the power to heal and was HE tempted to heal Lazarus? We do not know but we have to keep in mind that JESUS was tempted in all ways as we are. We do know that JESUS was obedient to the FATHER’S commands. Although JESUS had the power to heal HIS friend, HE knew that GOD had a higher purpose for this event and HE would trust HIS FATHER. When GOD is in control, we wait as HE instructs. But often waiting is very difficult. We want to take matters into our own hands and when we do, often we take them out of GOD’S hands.


JESUS had been preaching across the Jordon River in the area known as Perea. Lazarus lived in Bethany which was about two (2) miles from Jerusalem. JESUS delayed going to Lazarus for two (2) days. JESUS used this event as a teaching moment for HIS disciples and for others. JESUS spoke of walking in the light of GOD versus walking in the darkness of the Satan and the world. When a person walks in the light of CHRIST, he/she can see clearly the road ahead and will not stumble. Satan blinds and uses the darkness to cause people to stumble and doubt GOD’S sovereignty. Satan wants people to walk by what they see and know but GOD wants HIS children to walk by faith and allow HIM to be their guiding light. Day represents the knowledge of GOD’S will. Darkness represents the absence of knowledge of GOD’S will.


JESUS made it clear to HIS disciples that Lazarus was dead. JESUS arrived near the home of Lazarus and his sisters four (4) days after Lazarus was buried. Why four (4) days after his burial? The Jews believed that the spirit of the dead person stayed near the body for three (3) days after death. JESUS arrived when Lazarus had been in the grave for four (4) days so that all who would witness the upcoming miracle would know Lazarus was truly dead. His revivification (new life) would be the result of GOD’S power through HIM. Our focus scripture picks up the unfolding event.


Let’s read John 11:20-27:
20 As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him. But Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. 22 Yet even now I know that whatever You ask from God, God will give You.” 23 “Your brother will rise again,” Jesus told her. 24 Martha said, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me, even if he dies, will live. 26 Everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die—ever. Do you believe this?” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she told Him, “I believe You are the • Messiah, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”


What a powerful teachable moment. Martha went to JESUS. When tragedy happens, we need to go to JESUS because HE is the One Who is the “Resurrection and the Life.” This fact brings comfort those who grieve in times of death. GOD had given permission to JESUS to use the death and revivification of Lazarus to confirm HIS authority over death. This event occurred shortly before JESUS would begin HIS journey to the cross.


We see the faith that Martha had in JESUS. She saw and knew HIM as the true Messiah. JESUS likely wanted to hear her witness to the faith that HE knew was in her heart about HIM. There was no doubt in her heart that if JESUS had arrived while Lazarus was still alive, HE would have healed her brother. JESUS knew that but HE also knew that healing was one thing but giving life to a stinking corpus was quite another. Giving life to a stinking corpus reveals the total authority and power given to JESUS by GOD.


These were friends of JESUS and HE knew their hearts but they needed to confirm their faith in HIM in this time of need.


Let’s read John 11:32-36:
32 When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell at His feet and told Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died!” 33 When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, He was angry[3] in His spirit and deeply moved. 34 “Where have you put him?” He asked. “Lord,” they told Him, “come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews said, “See how He loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Couldn’t He who opened the blind man’s eyes also have kept this man from dying?”


Mary also came to JESUS and she fell at HIS feet. Mary, like her sister, told JESUS, “If HE had been there her brother would not have died.” This revealed the attitude of Mary’s heart.


Mary fell at the feet of JESUS. People grieve in different ways. Mary fell at the feet of JESUS as an act of worship and seeking comfort from the ONE Who she knew could comfort her. It is interesting that when JESUS saw her crying and the Jews who had come with her crying, JESUS became angry in HIS Spirit. Why did JESUS get angry in HIS SPIRIT? Something caused JESUS to weep. The Jews thought it was the result of HIS friend Lazarus dying and HE couldn’t do anything about it. The Jews were questioning the authority of JESUS. But little did they know that GOD had arranged this meeting to reveal the truth about JESUS’ authority. JESUS wept because of their unbelief and because sin robs people of the life GOD intended for them.


Notice in verse 37 that the Jews began questioning the authority and power of JESUS that came from GOD. Oh, HE could heal the blind but HE could not keep HIS friend from dying. Notice the sarcasm and desire to cast doubt upon the authority of JESUS. As Paul Harvey used to say, “Now for the rest of the story.”


We need to fill in with some additional scripture form John 11:38 -42:
The Seventh Sign: Raising Lazarus from the Dead
38 Then Jesus, angry in Himself again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 “Remove the stone,” Jesus said. Martha, the dead man’s sister, told Him, “Lord, he already stinks. It’s been four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You heard Me. 42 I know that You always hear Me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so they may believe You sent Me.”


Notice JESUS was angry again. HE was angry at the unbelief of the Jews and angry at sin, which robs people of their life. HE instructed some of the people to remove the stone lying against the entrance to the cave where they had buried Lazarus. Martha told JESUS, “He stinks because he has been dead for four (4) days.” Yuk!!! A dead body has a unique odor and it is not an odor you want to smell.


JESUS assured Martha that HE was the authority over the situation. She must continue to trust HIM. This is a message to us. When things seem hopeless, it is the time Christians must trust in JESUS. HE is the authority over all things. This event is a powerful message to all Christians that since CHRIST has the power and authority to raise the stinking/decaying physically dead, HE has the power and authority to raise the Spiritually dead and give those who believe in HIM eternal life.


JESUS prayed to HIS FATHER, so that all within hearing distance could know that HIS authority and power came from GOD. Those hearing HIS prayer would remember it and tell others about it. The lives of those witnessing this event would be impacted. Some believed in HIM and others used this event to become more determined to see that JESUS was put to death.


HIS words still reverberate in the hearts and minds of all who read this scripture or hear about this event today - “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You heard Me. 42 I know that You always hear Me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so they may believe You sent Me.”


Let’s read John 11:43-44:
43 After He said this, He shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him and let him go.”


JESUS prayed to the FATHER and HE raised Lazarus from the dead. All JESUS had to do was to ask him to come out. Some Bible scholars believe that JESUS called Lazarus by name because if HE hadn’t, then all of the dead would have been raised. JESUS commanded them to loose Lazarus from the grave clothes. JESUS is the ONE who can loose the shackles of sin and its' consequences, which is death, from our minds. HE gave HIS life that all who believe in HIM will be set free from the bondage of sin and receives the gift of eternal life.


Have you made that decision in your life? If not, please do so right now. Ask CHRIST to forgive you of your sins and to come into your life now. This life upon earth is brief but eternity is never ending.


JESUS said in John 10:10:
10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.


Once the shackles of death are removed from our minds, through the rebirth, only CHRIST can give life that becomes more abundant. Do we still grieve when we lose a loved one? YES, because it is normal. It is therapeutic to grieve. During the grieving process and beyond, our hope is in CHRIST, HIS resurrection and HIS promise of eternal life to all who believe in HIM.


JESUS still weeps over those who reject HIM. John 3:16-18 says it best: 16 “For God loved the world in this way: He gave His • One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.[10] 17 For God did not send His Son into the world that He might condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 Anyone who believes in Him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the • One and Only Son of God.
