Casual Christianity - Humility - James 4:1-17 - Novenber 29, 2009

Bible Study – Casual Christianity – Humility – November 29, 2009

This is our final study entitled “Casual Christianity.”

Our scripture is James 4:1-17.

This has been an interesting and challenging study. True Christianity is anything but casual. GOD’S desire is for HIS children to trust and rely upon HIM completely. That does not mean LORD “Do this, or do that or to hand me this or that.” GOD expects believers to take action as HE directs. It is a dynamic relationship with HIM. So where is ground zero?

James zeros in on the heart of the Christian. Christians have the freedom to choose but when they allow the flesh to rule their lives, they choose according to the flesh, which leads them to fall under the law of transgression. When they allow the HOLY SPIRIT to rule their lives and follow HIS leading and prompting, they show mercy and grace and fall under the law of freedom. GOD allows the rule of “quid pro quo” to go into effect as JESUS spoke of in the model pray “forgive us as we forgive others.”
GOD’S desire is for all of HIS children to obediently serve HIM out of a genuine heart that HE has been transformed through an intimate loving relationship with HIM. James has given us several measures for assessing our spiritual growth and maturity. In our study today, James again exposes the heart of believers. What is in the heart and what comes from the heart are true measures of a believer’s spiritual growth and maturity. Often, it is only GOD WHO knows and we as believers know. Others may know when they see us in a Christian setting versus a secular setting.

James is addressing pride or self-sufficiency versus humility. This is not pride that everyone should have in themselves but it is a nature that is envious of others and what they have – job, family, social status, fame, etc. It has elements of being envious and jealous of others and what they have or have accomplished to the point of seething, warring or fighting within such that it spills over into overt acts. As stated earlier it is all about the heart.

To me the heart of this study is summed up in Ephesians 3:20:

20 Now to Him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think—according to the power that works in you—

James was telling his readers and us today that GOD can lead, guide and direct the lives of believers far better than they can. That is why HE wants HIS children to rely upon HIM completely. Our sufficiency is in HIM and not in ourselves. Again it is not passive reliance upon GOD but active as you obediently serve HIM.

Let’s read James 4: 1-5:

Proud or Humble
1 What is the source of the wars and the fights among you? Don’t they come from the cravings that are at war within you?[1] Lit war in your members 2 You desire and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. You do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and don’t receive because you ask wrongly, so that you may spend it on your desires for pleasure. 4 Adulteresses![2] Other mss read Adulterers and adulteresses Do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the world’s friend becomes God’s enemy. 5 Or do you think it’s without reason the Scripture says that the Spirit He has caused to live in us yearns jealously?[3] Or He who caused the Spirit to live in us yearns jealously, or the spirit He caused to live in us yearns jealously, or He jealously yearns for the Spirit He made to live in us

In James 3:13-16, we discussed the things that reveal our flesh nature coming from a flesh heart. The first verses of chapter 4 are a continuation of these last verses in chapter 3. The flesh heart can be in a believer. James gives his readers examples of the flesh heart. The believer can get a measure of his/her spiritual growth and maturity by being aware of what is in his/her heart and comes from his/her heart:

- Bitter envy, selfish ambition, earthly wisdom that is unspiritual and devilish, promotes disorder and every kind of evil.

Our unregenerate flesh nature allows personal wars to thrive within us. The internal war, attitude and selfish nature can spill over to the external and when it does, it has a negative influence over a greater number of people, Christian or non-Christian alike. You fight your desires but you give in to them and become more frustrated. You do not consider GOD as the power in your life because you are self sufficient and do not need HIS help.

James used words which raise questions and makes you wonder what in the world was going on in the early church such as murder, coveting, fighting and war. The question is how to interpret these words. Was James writing about actual fights, wars and murders among the members of the early church? Or was he using these words figuratively, meaning to hate your brother was the same as murder. Most Bible scholars believe James was using these words figuratively but clearly there was a problem with the hearts of the believers.

James used the word “adulteress.” This is the feminine form which called the men adulteresses. So how can a male be an adulteress? In the Old Testament GOD thought of Israel as HIS bride and when they served other gods or turned its back on HIM, HE referred to Israel as adulterous. James used this in reference to those who seek pleasure and the dictates of the flesh, which come between believers and GOD.
To be a friend with the world is to have GOD as your enemy. Therefore, believers, you have a choice to make, do you want to be friends with the world or with GOD. If you choose GOD then you will have to commit your life to HIM and be obedient to HIM.
When GOD’S children choose to allow the flesh to rule, it breaks GOD’S heart because HE knows there is something much better for them. HE is jealous because HIS desire is for HIS children to have the best and the best for them is to allow HIM to direct their lives. But this is not being a robot but it is being obedient to HIM.

Our born-again spirit within can be at war with our flesh spirit. When this happens it is a great source of frustration. We know we should not do what our flesh wants us to do but we do it anyway. We must be dead honest with GOD and tell HIM about the desires of our hearts. HE already knows but we need HIS help to overcome them and to change our mindset to allow HIM to rule our lives. The Apostle Paul fought with his flesh in chapters 7 and 8 of Romans.

GOD knows that we as humans cannot live a perfect life. The key is for us not to be deceived into thinking we are when we know we are not. HE wants us to confess our short comings and form a partnership with HIM. It is like a baby trying to take its first steps. It will stumble and fall. We do not scold him/her but we encourage and say to keep on trying. GOD does the same. That is why HE extends grace to HIS children as they journey through life in harmony, fellowship and relationship with HIM, which leads us into verse 6.

Let’s read James 4:6-12:

6 But He gives greater grace. Therefore He says: God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.[4] Pr 3:34 7 Therefore, submit to God. But resist the Devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, double-minded people! 9 Be miserable and mourn and weep. Your laughter must change to mourning and your joy to sorrow. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you. 11 Don’t criticize one another, brothers. He who criticizes a brother or judges his brother criticizes the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is one lawgiver and judge[5] Other mss omit and judge who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?

When believers recognize and acknowledge the war between the flesh and the spirit and they desire to change, GOD gives them grace. It means those who try to change and are struggling will step in a pothole along the way. GOD realizes that and grants them grace to get out of the pot hole and keep on pressing on. GOD knows the hearts of those who desire to change.

Likewise, HE knows those with a prideful heart and their resisting help from HIM. HE resists those who think they can handle it themselves and fail to seek HIM. GOD knows that Satan appeals to our flesh and HE tells those desiring to change how to cope with Satan in verse 7 – Look to GOD and resist the devil. Just say no, believer’s strength and deliverance is in the hands of GOD and HIS power. GOD has already defeated Satan through the death of HIS ONLY SON, JESUS. As proof, GOD raised JESUS from the dead. Resist in the power and name of JESUS and Satan will flee.
Now a word of caution, if he fled for good that would be good but it is only for a time. Often a believer rejoices in this momentary victory only to experience another round of testing and possible temptation. Satan’s desire is to defeat and destroy.

James tells his readers that the key is to draw near to GOD and HE will draw near to you. GOD has an open invitation to all and especially HIS children. HE is always ready for believers to come to HIM and to seek HIS help in times of need. Focusing on scripture and reflecting on the awesomeness of GOD during difficult times is important. Most believers allow barriers to come between them and GOD. When that happens, it is important to turn your mind to GOD WHO can help you through your circumstances.

James admonishes his readers to be single minded by focusing on GOD and drawing near to HIM. Being double minded, that is serving both GOD and the flesh, reveals a spiritual heart problem that requires you to focus on a Godly solution. Believers must be single-minded. This is addressed in Revelation 3:15-16:

15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were cold or hot. 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit[14] Or spit you out of My mouth.

Believers cannot serve two (2) masters. They must either choose to be all that HE wants you to be or choose to be cold, otherwise when we vacillate we make GOD sick.
In essence, James was telling his readers, to come to GOD as they did in the days when they worshipped HIM in the temple by cleansing their hands, confessing their sins and revealing to GOD what was really in their hearts. It is an ongoing process.
You must recognize the fact that you are trying to serve two (2) masters, the flesh and the Spirit and which is impossible. When believers recognize what they are doing they will be sorry because it is a serious sin. You have been happy not serving GOD and enjoying what the world has had to offer, however, once you recognize what you have done turn your laughter into mourning and sorrow. Be repentant and come to GOD with a humble spirit.

You need to focus on your own problems and not criticize or judge others. When you criticize or judge others you put yourself in GOD’S position. You must keep in mind on the royal law, which is to love your neighbor as yourself. We are all sinners saved by grace, so by the same grace GOD extends to us, we must extend to others.

Let’s read James 4: 13-17:

Our Will and His Will
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.” 14 You don’t even know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are a bit of smoke that appears for a little while, and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you should say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 So, for the person who knows to do good and doesn’t do it, it is a sin.

James continued his message of self-sufficiency and a form of arrogance to believers scattered across the region. In essence, he was telling his readers, just listen to what you say to others. You are so confident in your own ability and self-sufficiency you disregard any thought of GOD having the final authority in your lives. You say what you are going to do. Stop and think for a minute. GOD is the ONE WHO gives you your life and watches over you each moment. Recognize and acknowledge that fact by saying from a grateful and humble heart, if the LORD wills, I will do such-and-so. Your life is like a vapor or puff of smoke, it appears for awhile and it is gone.
You know what you need to do, therefore, do it. If you keep being stubborn then you will suffer the consequences. The choice is yours.

In verse 17, James zeros in on the sin of omission. The sin of omission is failing to do the right thing, when you know it. The sin of commission is knowingly doing the wrong thing. Again, is it pride, stubbornness, arrogance, self-ambition that stops believers from obediently serving GOD when they know they should? For example, if there is someone you need to ask to forgive you or you to tell someone that you are sorry and you refuse that is a sin of omission. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 16:18 - 18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.

As we come to the end of our study, James is reminding all of us to examine our relationship to our LORD. Look and listen to what comes from our hearts. Does our talk match our walk? Are we self-sufficient and depend upon our own abilities rather than depending upon GOD. Sure we must do our part but in concert with GOD as HE leads and directs our lives.

We must rely upon GOD and our relationship to HIM to bring about the change needed in our lives which will produce the results HE desires for us. Seek HIM first and get to know HIM and ask HIM to build within you the loving intimate relationship that will help you grow and mature spiritually naturally.

Casul Christianity - Watch Your Language - James 3 - November 22, 2009

Bible Study – Casual Christianity – Watch Your Language – November 22, 2009

This is study four (4) in our series on “Casual Christianity.”

Our scripture is James 3:1-18.

James was touching on areas in the lives of his readers then and now that are important for Christians. They are the areas which can give believers a way to measure their spiritual growth and maturity.

Our last study was about prejudice and favoritism and this study is about the tongue. Our last study ended discussing the law of freedom versus the law of transgression. Mercy triumphs over the law of judgment. When believers show mercy then they are extended mercy. Believers have the choice whether or not to show prejudice and favoritism.

It is like forgiveness. The model prayer of JESUS is recorded in Matthew 6:12 and 14-15. JESUS gives us a teaching regarding the quid pro quo of forgiveness:

12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

14 “For if you forgive people their wrongdoing,[9] Or trespasses your heavenly Father will forgive you as well. 15 But if you don’t forgive people,[10] Other mss add their wrongdoing your Father will not forgive your wrongdoing.[11] Or trespasses

James said the same spiritual principle applies regarding prejudice, favoritism and the tongue. Let’s explore.

Let’s read James 3:1-6:

Controlling the Tongue
1 Not many should become teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive a stricter judgment; 2 for we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says,[1] Lit in word he is a mature man who is also able to control his whole body.[2] Lit to bridle the whole body 3 Now when we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we also guide the whole animal.[3] Lit whole body 4 And consider ships: though very large and driven by fierce winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So too, though the tongue is a small part [of the body]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. , it boasts great things. Consider how large a forest a small fire ignites. 6 And the tongue is a fire. The tongue, a world of unrighteousness, is placed among the parts of our [bodies]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. ; it pollutes the whole body, sets the course of life on fire, and is set on fire by • hell.

James begins by addressing teachers. We as teachers are and will be held to a higher standard by GOD because we teach truth, therefore we have no excuse. But James contiues with the words that "we all stumble in many ways." Teachers, pastors and fellow believers all stumble. That is why we have to confess, repent and GOD forgives and restores.

How do we know when we are making spiritual progress? When we control our tongue!

Believers have a choice to show favoritism or not. If they do show favoritism they sin and are accountable. The same is with the use of their tongues or speech. Believers can both control their tongues and show their spiritual maturity but if they choose not to, they suffer the consequences.

James used two (2) examples where a small thing controls a large thing and a small uncontrolled thing can result in major damage. For example a small bit controls a big powerful horse, a rudder controls a large ship and a small fire can ignite a large forest fire and destroy the forest.

Our tongue is a small part of our body but if it is not used wisely and controlled it can cause a world of trouble.

Let’s read James 3:7-12:
7 For every creature—animal or bird, reptile or fish—is tamed and has been tamed by man, 8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our[4] Or bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men who are made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things should not be this way. 11 Does a spring pour out sweet and bitter water from the same opening? 12 Can a fig tree produce olives, my brothers, or a grapevine [produce]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. figs? Neither can a saltwater spring yield fresh water.

James again used examples to drive home the attributes of human nature. We pride ourselves with our ability to tame dangerous wild animals and reptiles but we cannot tame our tongue. Just as wild animals are dangerous and a reptile is poisonous so is the tongue. He seems to be relating the caution and care a person takes in taming an animal, reptile or fish to the necessity of a believer using the same caution and care to tame his/her tongue.

James says "no man can control his tongue." Why? Because it takes it is a matter oif the heart and who rules the heart - self or the SPIRIT. Control of the tongue comes from a heart that is controlled by GOD. Even allowing GOD to fully control our heart is a process of yielding our will to HIM. How do know we are making progress? When we control our tongue. It is all about our inner person being molded into the image of JESUS.

He challenges his readers to consider the spiritual aspects of the use their tongues. Believers can use them to praise GOD or curse their fellow human beings. We can use our tongue to bless or curse.

Then he challenges his readers to consider their hearts and actions in everyday life to their relation with GOD by asking:

Can a water source produce both sweet and bitter water?
Can a fig tree produce olives?
Can a grapevine produce figs?
Can a saltwater source produce fresh water?
Of course the answer to all the questions is a resounding NO!

These questions shine the spiritual light deeply into every believer’s heart. When we do not control our tongue, it brings into question our relationship to GOD. Is HE in control of our lives? What fruit is being produced in our lives? Is CHRIST the living water that springs eternal in our lives? Is HE our source and do we allow the HOLY SPIRIT to lead, guide and control our lives? A fit of hurtful words can result in a lifetime of hurt. This is not to say there are times when stern words of truth should not be spoken but speak with words resulting from heavenly wisdom. These heavenly stern words of wisdom come from a true relationship with our LORD.

Let’s read James 3:13-18:

The Wisdom from Above
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? He should show his works by good conduct with wisdom’s gentleness. 14 But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t brag and lie in defiance of the truth. 15 Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For where envy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every kind of evil. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without favoritism and hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

In essence, James was telling his readers how to identify fellow believers who were maturing in the LORD and allowing the HOLY SPIRIT to guide their lives. The simple instructions were to observe whose talk matches their walk. By the same measure, believers can evaluate their own spiritual growth and maturity by comparing their talk, under all circumstances, with their walk. Are they consistent or do they talk one way when they are around their Christian friends and another when they are away from them? Even more important, what is our thought life like and how does it compare to our talk and our walk? I shake my head as I write this because there is so much work yet to be done in my life.

The Greek word used for gentleness is the word used for meekness. Many Christians do not like to think of themselves as being meek. They think of meekness as weakness. I used to cringe at the word meek or meekness until I read a commentary that helped me understand meekness. Meekness was compared to a powerful horse or charger that was under the control of its master. The horse/charger had great power but which was kept under the control of its master until it was needed for the purpose determined by its master. The key is who is the master of our lives – the flesh/self or GOD through the HOLY SPIRIT?

James addressed the attitude and heart of believers toward others when they choose to show favoritism or when they do not tame their tongues. It is all about the heart, the inner person. It is the core of the believer that must be renewed through the rebirth and the process of sanctification. Believers can measure their spiritual growth and maturity as they observe the consistency between their actions and words, outwardly in various circumstances and inwardly through their thought life. JESUS tells us that GOD holds us accountable for keeping the intent or spirit of the law as well as the letter of the law. GOD also grants HIS children grace but HIS desire is for all believers to be made into the image of HIS SON, JESUS.

This is tough and in fact impossible without focusing on your relationship with CHRIST. Focus on the relationship and allow HIM to work on the areas in your life that will produce in you the natural, genuine and true consistency that comes only from HIM through you. I can tell you I have a long way to go but the good news is HE is still working on me.

James continued to probe the heart of believers by dealing with their attitude and human nature (flesh) versus their attitude and nature coming from their relationship with GOD through CHRIST (SPIRIT led). GOD’S desire for HIS children is for them to be led by the HOLY SPIRIT.

James states there are two (2) kinds of wisdom – earthly and heavenly.

Earthly wisdom does not have heaven as its source. Notice that earthly wisdom has a descending hierarchy that ends in its true source, Satan:
- Earthly
- Sensual
- Demonic

Earthly wisdom produces bitter envy and selfish ambition and the results are disorder and every kind of evil. This is the fruit of earthly wisdom. Satan’s goal is to enslave and destroy. GOD’S goal is to deliver from the bondage of sin and death through salvation provided by faith in JESUS and to encourage HIS children to grow to full maturity in HIM.

But HE never takes away HIS children’s right to choose.

Heavenly wisdom is from GOD and is first pure (meaning Holy), then peace-loving, gentle, compliant (will not be contrary to HIS Word), full of mercy and good fruits, without favoritism and hypocrisy.

When heavenly fruit is produced by each believer, it has seeds of righteousness which in turn produces the fruit of righteousness as James stated in verse 18:

18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

The fruit of righteousness is produced in the hearts of those who seek and implement wisdom from GOD. In turn, others benefit from the example set by those who implement and exhibit wisdom from GOD. Believers sow seeds as they obediently serve our LORD.

Earthly wisdom leads to destruction and Godly wisdom leads to righteousness. It is all about our hearts. Are they sanctified and led by the HOLY SPIRIT or they led by the flesh?

As mentioned in an earlier study, James is all about being a mature Christian. Being a mature Christian is all about relationship and knowing JESUS. It is dispelling all of our false notions about CHRIST and embracing truth and not what we want to be truth. Through our relationship with CHRIST, the HOLY SPIRIT will lead us to know and understand truth and will give us both the power and opportunity to obediently serve our LORD.
Allow GOD through the HOLY SPIRIT to bring about natural spiritual growth and maturity in your lives. HE does not sprinkle us with Holy Dust to zap us into instant maturity. Talk to HIM in prayer and ask HIM to help you to become all you are capable of becoming. It takes time because it is like growing from childhood to an adult. There are some things that cannot be fully comprehended or understood until you have experienced certain things in life. We all look back and say “only if I knew then what I know now.” Look at what it took for us to know now; it was about living and learning. It is an awesome journey when GOD is your teacher as you obediently serve HIM

Casual Christianity - Treat Everyone Equally - James 2:1-13 - November 15, 2009

Bible Study – Casual Christianity – Treat Everyone Equally – November 15, 2009

This is study three (3) in our series entitled “Casual Christianity.”

Our scripture is James 2:1-13.

Prejudice takes on many forms. It can rob believers of serving in areas they are called to by GOD. It can stunt our spiritual growth. Cliques can be used to include or exclude certain people and result in some individuals feeling left out. The selection process to form a clique or special group of people is not always based upon race but any number of other criteria.

Showing favoritism is inclusion or exclusion of people over others. It is human to want to be chosen to associate with the in-group. Christians are often no different and we have to be very careful not to fall into that mindset.

CHRIST welcomes all people from all walks of life to come to HIM in faith regardless of their status or background. I quickly caution believers not to park their brains when interacting with fellow believers. Some believers or so-called believers can prey upon fellow believers to do mischief or to take advantage of them.

This study is about believers relating to others without showing prejudice or favoritism. But a word of caution, keep a careful eye upon yourself that you are not drawn into a lifestyle that is contrary to Biblical teaching as you welcome others to become associated with you.

Let’s read James 2:1-4:

The Sin of Favoritism
1 My brothers, hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ without showing

favoritism. 2 For suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring, dressed in fine clothes, and a poor man dressed in dirty clothes also comes in. 3 If you look with favor on the man wearing the fine clothes so that you say, “Sit here in a good place,” and yet you say to the poor man, “Stand over there,” or, “Sit here on the floor by my footstool,” 4 haven’t you discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

James was telling his readers oil and water don’t mix. In other words one’s faith in CHRIST leaves no room for him/her to show favoritism. Showing favoritism is a personal attitude toward others and has no place in being a believer or serving CHRIST.

James used the words “glorious” “LORD” “JESUS” “CHRIST” for a reason. A believer must go beyond the humanness of CHRIST to see HIS Glory as the SON of GOD or Messiah. Believers must go beyond the outward appearance of people to see their heart toward CHRIST.

GOD looks upon the heart and not upon the outward appearance.

A person donned with gold and fine clothes does not reveal their true spiritual nature. So do not be fooled into catering to those with the outward appearance of wealth over the poor because GOD looks upon their heart. Christians should look beyond the veneer.

This attitude James was portraying toward the wealthy was likely a carryover from the Jewish faith. When a person was prosperous, he/she was considered to be in favor or blessed by GOD. James was telling his readers that was not the case. GOD looks upon the heart of a person and not the outward appearance or how much wealth he/she has accumulated. James had already told his readers about faith and works revealing the heart of the true believer.

James revealed his faith in JESUS by using the words “glorious Lord Jesus Christ.” His use of these words is a form of testimony that his half-brother was the true Messiah and he had faith in HIM because of HIS life, death, resurrection, ascension and evidence of the HOLY SPIRIT in his life.

James cited an example of Jewish Christians being in a “meeting”, “church” or synagogue and showing favoritism to those who had influence or who gave the appearance of being rich. This again was a likely carryover from the Jewish worship because the Sadducees, Pharisees and scribes liked the seats of prominence where they could be seen by the congregation. To me those who want the special seats raise a question in my mind regarding their motive. This is not to say that when we have special speakers or guests in our midst that we should not introduce them or not treat them well.

James points out when they show favoritism, they are discriminating against each other and making a judgment that comes from the flesh. It is like saying this person is better or more spiritual than you, therefore, you sit on the floor. It reveals their heart. Such an act shows that their hearts are not in tune with the character and nature of GOD. This is a serious indictment against those who call themselves Christians. When they show favoritism to others, they will likely show favoritism within their body of believers.

This is not criticizing common courtesy. Often a person gives his/her seat to another but it his/her choice.

When a person of means or stature allows them to treat him/her in such a way, it reveals his/her character as well. If church leaders cater to such individuals, is it out of a heart for the spiritual welfare of that person or is it in hopes of getting the benefit of that person’s association with their church? There are many Godly people of stature and means who love our LORD and serve HIM with the resources available to them. Most often, fellow believers never know what these folks do in serving and neither do these people want you to know because they are obediently responding to the call of GOD.

The Bible tells us to not let the left hand know what the right hand does.

Let’s read James 2:5-7:

5 Listen, my dear brothers: Didn’t God choose the poor in this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that He has promised to those who love Him? 6 Yet you dishonored that poor man. Don’t the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts? 7 Don’t they blaspheme the noble name that you bear?

James continued admonishing fellow Christians regarding discriminating against the poor Christians. Showing favoritism must have been a major problem in the early church.

As with many new and developing churches they need all the funds and support they can get. But they must keep in mind the purpose of their calling.

James used the word “listen” in verse 5 to get the attention of his readers. It was like, using a stern voice to say, “Now pay special attention to what I am going to tell you.” GOD has chosen to watch out for the poor because HE knows they tend to have honest, sincere hearts and depend upon HIM for their care more so than the rich. This is not to say the rich are not Godly people who also depend upon the LORD. But often when we have plenty, we tend to be more self-sufficient.

Notice that James ends verse 5 with “that He has promised to those who love Him.” This is all encompassing to include those materially poor or rich. How do you love GOD? You obediently serve HIM and build an intimate relationship with HIM. You spent time with HIM to get to really know HIM.

The poor have needs and are not as self-sufficient as the poor. They most often need hope and they find hope in GOD. HE created all that they see and they trust that HE can take care of them, whereas, the rich often depend upon what they have and are often self-sufficient. Again, this is and was not the attitude of all rich people. GOD does favor those who are spiritually poor and recognize their need for salvation from sin and death and need for CHRIST.

The rich have to be very careful not to rely upon their wealth rather than relying upon their relationship with GOD through CHRIST. The poor may not have the things the world has to offer but when they look to GOD for strength, wisdom and care they are made spiritually rich. It draws them into a more intimate relationship with CHRIST and as a result they grow and mature spiritually. Their dependence and focus upon the LORD allows them to celebrate their relationship with CHRIST and HE gives them the crown of life. We discussed the crown of life in our last study. The crown of life is given to all who are drawn into a more intimate loving relationship with CHRIST, materially poor or rich.

James reminds his readers that the very people to whom they are showing partiality are the very ones who can take them to court and blaspheme the name of CHRIST. James was encouraging his readers to look beyond a person’s outward appearance as GOD does.

When a person or family of prominence joins our church or Sunday school class, we spread the word that the so-and-so’s joined our church or class. It is natural. Our church or class rejoices when a sinner, rich or poor, gives his/her heart to our LORD and is welcomed into our fellowship regardless of his/her status. We as a congregation delight in watching fellow believers, regardless of their status or wealth, grow, mature and serve our LORD. Yes, our financial folks are always delighted when someone of means joins our congregation in hopes he/she will be good contributors but they also are concerned with his/her spiritual health and growth.

Let’s read James 2:8-13:

8 If you really carry out the royal law prescribed in Scripture, Love your neighbor as yourself,[1] you are doing well. 9 But if you show favoritism, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the entire law, yet fails in one point, is guilty of [breaking it]* all. 11 For He who said, Do not commit adultery,[2] also said, Do not murder.[3] So if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you are a lawbreaker. 12 Speak and act as those who will be judged by the law of freedom. 13 For judgment is without mercy to the one who hasn’t shown mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

James turned up the heat and by telling his readers that showing favoritism was a sin. To guard against showing favoritism you should “Love your neighbor as yourself.” When you do, you do not need to worry about discriminating against others. The Apostle Matthew recorded the words of JESUS in Matthew 22:34-40 regarding the importance of loving your neighbor as yourself it reflects the love you have toward GOD. JESUS said the two (2) go hand in hand.

The Primary Commandments
34 When the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they came together in the same place. 35 And one of them, an expert in the law, asked a question to test Him: 36 “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?”[12]37 He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.[13] 38 This is the greatest and most important[14]commandment. 39 The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.[15] 40 All the Law and the Prophets depend[16]on these two commandments.”

James’ readers came from Jewish religious backgrounds and even though they were Christians, they kept the law. He was reminding those who prided themselves in keeping the law but failing to keep one point of the law were guilty of breaking all of the law. Since showing favoritism was a sin they were breaking the law to show favoritism. Believers are not under the law but under grace or mercy, which is the law of freedom. Believers are to abide by the law, as well as, the intent of the law. That is why believers must have grace or mercy from GOD through CHRIST. Believers are accountable to GOD for all of their actions and the words they utter. GOD extends grace or mercy to all believers. The law of freedom prevails over the law of judgment.

A believer is free to discriminate or show favoritism but when he/she does it is a sin. Therefore, if a believer wants to remain under the law of freedom then choose to show mercy toward others rich or poor and do not show favoritism or discriminate.
James made it clear that showing favoritism was a sin toward the poor therefore the person showing favoritism had broken the intent of the “royal law.” They are not treating others as they want to be treated.

JESUS reminds believers and non-believers alike of the importance of observing the intent of the law in Matthew 5:21 and 27:

21 “You have heard that it was said to our ancestors,[5] Do not murder,[6]and whoever murders will be subject to judgment.
27 “You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery.[12] 28 But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

GOD looks upon the heart of the person. Therefore, when you show favoritism to the rich over the poor your priorities are misplaced. Treat all people as GOD does and consider their obedience to GOD rather than their outward appearance.
Loving the person regardless of his/her status in life has given rise to many alternative worship services or community churches, which I think are great. Worship is not about how we dress or who we see or want to be seen with. But it is about coming together to worship our LORD, to learn more about HIM, to grow and mature spiritually and to obediently serve HIM whether in ragged jeans or a tux.

One day we will all meet JESUS and it will not be about how much material wealth we accumulated but how much have we grown into the image of our SAVIOR and LORD JESUS? Well done, MY son or daughter our FATHER will say. You look just like MY SON JESUS!!!

Casual Christianity - Celebrate Your Trials - James 1:1-18 - November 8, 2009

Bible Study – Casual Christianity – Celebrate Your Trials – November 8, 2009

This is study two (2) in our series entitled “Casual Christianity.”

Our scripture is James 1:2-18.

We cycle back to the beginning verses of Chapter 1, where James tells his readers to count it all joy when trials come their way. When trials come their way, Christians must be true believers and on the firm foundation of CHRIST before they can truly count it all joy. It is the joy of knowing that GOD has allowed the trial for our good to make us more into the image of HIS SON.

Trials are not temptations. GOD uses trials to perfect, whereas Satan uses temptations to defeat and destroy. GOD is not running around looking for an opportunity to put believers into a trial situation. They are already surrounded by many possible opportunities just by being alive and human. Often, people find themselves in circumstances and situations that need GOD’S wisdom. Christians have direct access to GOD through the miracle of rebirth. Issues in life can lead non-believers to become believers.

Being a believer is NOT a magic wand. Believers suffer as many others but have the choice whether or not to seek GOD’S help. Believers can make unwise decisions and find themselves in a world of trouble. In that case, the unwise believer must confess his/her bad decision and seek GOD’S wisdom and guidance. The believer may have to live with the consequences of his/her action. This gives the opportunity to learn from his/her bad decision and hopefully will be drawn closer to GOD. GOD never overrides our right to choose. Situations resulting from sin or bad decisions can be opportunities for spiritual growth but GOD did not lead you to that bad decision or sin.

Then there are situations when believers are doing the right thing and find themselves in trying circumstances. This can be the result of just living and going through life. Such trials or tests provide opportunity for Christians to be drawn into more intimate, loving relationships with GOD when they focus on HIM as they go through these times.

In our last study, we studied the spiritual perfecting of Abraham when GOD asked him to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. Abraham had a decision to make whether or not to obey GOD. The foreknowledge of GOD allowed HIM to know how Abraham would choose. But Abraham did not know how he would choose until faced with the decision. GOD wanted Abraham to see for himself the level of his faith in HIM which would draw them even closer in their relationship. Abraham knew that sacrificing his son meant that Isaac would be reduced to ashes. Abraham had such faith in GOD that he believed GOD would resurrect Isaac from the ashes. Isaac was a good as dead, as far as Abraham was concerned. GOD stopped Abraham from killing his son and provided a ram for the sacrifice. GOD revealed HIS sufficiency to Abraham.

This trial led Abraham to the pinnacle of his spiritual growth and maturity. This was the thought which James portrayed in these opening verses of his letter to fellow believers. GOD allows trials for a purpose. Trials give believers the opportunity to either come closer to their LORD or get angry with HIM or somewhere in between. Trials are no fun and only after we get through them, we may or may not see the benefit.

The Apostle Paul gives us a glimpse of the purpose of some trials, circumstances and situations in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4:

The God of Comfort

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. 4 He comforts us in all our affliction,[2] Or trouble, or tribulation, or trials, or oppression; the Gk word has a lit meaning of being under pressure. so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

It has been my experience that GOD most often does not take us over, under or around situations but straight through them. Figuratively speaking, when we come out on the other end we may be battered, bloody and bruised but stronger in HIM. GOD practices tough love in raising HIS children just as earthly parents do. HE knows what we are capable of achieving. We must keep in mind that GOD did not make us for time but for eternity. Believe me it is often not easy. I often have a “pity party” when I am going through situations. The key is that I tell GOD how I am feeling and my hope is that I will know HIM better and will be made stronger after the trial is over. But I still don’t like what I am experiencing. As I have shared with you often, it is important that we talk honestly to GOD about issues we have with HIM.

Let’s read James 1:1-4:

Greeting

1 James, a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ: To the 12 tribes in the Dispersion. Greetings.

Trials and Maturity

2 Consider it a great joy, my brothers, whenever you experience various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 But endurance must do its complete work, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.

As we mentioned in study one (1), James is the half brother of JESUS and he referred to himself as the slave of both GOD and JESUS. He also referred to JESUS as LORD.

James is writing his letter to fellow Christians who remained in Jerusalem and to those who have been scattered throughout the country. The Jewish Christians were being persecuted, experiencing poverty, loneliness and likely other trials not mentioned in the letter.

James told his readers, “consider it a great joy, my brothers (and sisters), whenever you experience various trials.” This is where the rubber meets the road. It is hard to fake being a true believer when you are being tested. James said to “count it a great joy.”

I know of a rather large church that threw a “Count it all joy party” whenever its members had serious problems in their lives. To me that takes a lot of faith. They told of many wonderful things that came out of having a “count it all joy party.”

Here we have to be careful. Are we having a “count it all joy party” in an effort to manipulate GOD to bring about a positive result? Are we led to have such a party regardless of the outcome because we rejoice in the fact that GOD is in control? Trials are for the purpose of perfecting. When our faith is being perfected, then we have such a party out of a heart that is truly being responsive to HIS sovereignty and majesty. It is with a knowing that whatever comes from the trial, it will be a blessing. Am I there? NO!!! It is always my hope that the trial will do its work in me. But I am stubborn, which is not good.

I have never had or been to a “count it all joy party.” But James was not saying to have a “count it all joy party.” He is saying “count it all joy” and let the trial do its work as you are drawn closer to GOD and are perfected.

It seems that James was telling his readers when GOD allows trials to come your way, rejoice because GOD considers you worthy of honing your spiritual life. The end goal is not endurance. It is not being able to say, “Well I got through that, boy I am strong.” It is enduring the trial focused on GOD and HIS sufficiency that is important. It is your relationship with GOD through the trial that produces spiritual growth and maturity which results in you being more spiritually complete or whole – lacking nothing. You emerge from the trial more connected to CHRIST, through relationship. You are abiding in CHRIST.

This is part of the sanctification process as believers seek to obediently serve their LORD. GOD is the orchestrator.

Let’s read James 1:5-11:

5 Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith without doubting. For the doubter is like the surging sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 An indecisive man is unstable in all his ways. 9 The brother of humble circumstances should boast in his exaltation; 10 but the one who is rich [should boast]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. in his humiliation, because he will pass away like a flower of the field. 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and dries up the grass; its flower falls off, and its beautiful appearance is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will wither away while pursuing his activities.

James continued with the concept of trials bringing about wholeness. He told his readers that when they are going through trials and they need wisdom, to know what to do or not to do, they need to ask GOD. Wisdom as used here is not intellectual or some philosophical knowledge. It is wisdom that comes from GOD and reveals HIS insight from HIS vantage point as how best to handle the situation or trial. Often, GOD reveals such wisdom as believers look into the mirror of HIS Word. But HE can reveal it any way HE chooses.

I think of this as asking our LORD, “LORD, to my knowledge I have done nothing to take me out of your circle of protection. But if I have, please reveal it to me. Otherwise, I trust that what I am experiencing is from YOU and it is for the purpose of helping me to grow and mature spiritually. But I am having a hard time going through this and I need your wisdom to help me get through this and not cut short what I need to learn. Please reveal to me your wisdom and what I need to do for this trial to be as effective as YOU want it to be for me, so that I will continue to obediently serve YOU.”

James says that GOD gives generously and without criticism (v. 5). This means that GOD answers our prayers and does not fault us when we ask HIM questions or ask for HIS wisdom, which is asking HIM for HIS insight into a situation. James made it clear that the person making the request for wisdom in faith and not doubting or wavering will receive it. It is important that believers trust HIM during trials.

Trials come to both the poor and the rich. Trials will not change that status. The poor will still be physically poor but spiritually rich. The rich will still be rich and also spiritually rich. The rich have to be reminded that one day they will leave all of their riches behind. Their sufficiency is in GOD and not their riches. This fact should humble the rich. GOD is no respecter of social status.

If you have not experienced a trial it is likely just being a human, living in a sinful world, you will encounter a trial. How will you handle it? No one knows until they come face to face with it. Keep in mind that a trial in not a temptation but it can lead to temptation if you do not keep your mind focused upon GOD and seek HIS wisdom and help as you go through it.

Let’s read James 1:12-18:

12 Blessed is a man (or woman) who endures trials,[1] Lit trial, used as a collective because when he passes the test he will receive the crown of life that He[2] Other mss read that the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 No one undergoing a trial should say, “I am being tempted by God.” For God is not tempted by evil,[3] Or evil persons, or evil things and He Himself doesn’t tempt anyone. 14 But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desires. 15 Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death. 16 Don’t be deceived, my dearly loved brothers. 17 Every generous act and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights; with Him there is no variation or shadow cast by turning. 18 By His own choice, He gave us a new birth by the message of truth[4] message of truth = the gospel so that we would be the • firstfruits[5] Nm 15:17–21 of His creatures.

Enduring trials focused on GOD produces spiritual growth and maturity. It produces a more intimate, loving relationship with GOD through CHRIST. It produces a spiritual solidness and assurance, which is a spiritual wholeness. This in turn results in the reward of “crown of life” that HE has promised to all that love HIM.

What is the “crown of life?” It is the result of getting through a trial or test and knowing that GOD saw you through it to perfect you and you have been drawn closer to HIM. Your relationship with HIM is more real than ever because you know HIM better and your trust and confidence in HIM is greater. I am reminded of the scripture in John 10:10: - 10 A thief comes only to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come that they may have life and have it in abundance.

The more believers get to know JESUS, the more abundant is their life. This process results in the “crown of life”, which is the pinnacle of living life on this earth which also carries believers into eternity. It is winning the race with the ultimate race being when we run across the finish line into the arms of JESUS, WHO says “Well done good and faithful servant.” Now that to me is a mind blower!!!

As mentioned earlier, a trial is not a temptation. GOD does not tempt any one. Normal living in a sinful world will provide sufficient temptation. Never think that GOD tempts you. Often, believers who have an affair think that GOD has allowed this other person to come into his/her life as his/her “soul mate.”DO NOT BE FOOLED!!! This other person is not your “soul mate.” I know divorce happens but it is devastating, especially when children are involved. I am not saying that people in an abusive situation should stay. Get help and get away. Being abused is not a trial from GOD. It is the result of an evil, lower than life coward. My prayer is that every abuser will be revealed and will get help. The same is for addicts. GOD can help them.

All good gifts come from GOD, WHO is the creator of all you see when you look up into the heavens and see HIS handiwork, thus the Father of lights. If HE can create such a wonderful universe and maintain order, then HE can guide your live if you allow HIM. You are of greater importance because HE sent HIS ONLY SON JESUS to die for you so that you can be set free from your sins by believing in HIM. GOD resurrected JESUS from the dead as proof that HE is the true Messiah. HE sent the HOLY SPIRIT to indwell you as a down payment or security deposit to assure you that your faith in HIM is real and that you have eternal life. At the moment of their salvation, born-again believers become the first fruits of those experiencing rebirth into the family of GOD. Just as all people were born into their physical family and had to grow and mature, so do believers when they are born into GOD’S family. Salvation is just the beginning of a believer’s journey of sanctification.

Born-again believers will still encounter trials in their lives because they live in a sinful world. But the Good News is that GOD will never leave them or forsake them. Since HE never takes away a believer’s right to choose, he/she must stay focused upon HIM when trials come their way. GOD’S purpose is for the believer to be made more spiritually whole to become the person HE desires. HE knows what you are capable of becoming.

I taught James years ago. It is a book on being a mature Christian. When I completed the study, I remember praying and asking the LORD to make me a mature Christian. Be careful what you ask for. I was immature and was aware of it. I thought GOD would sprinkle me with Holy Dust and poof; I would have instant spiritual maturity. WRONG!!! HE cleaned my clock, so to speak, of all false notions and spiritual misconceptions I had accumulated over the years. I was reduced to the foundation of CHRIST. I knew I was a Christian and never questioned my salvation. It was upon this foundation that HE began building my spiritual life in HIM. HE has been rebuilding my spiritual life ever since and HE is still working on me. Has it been easy? NO!!! Would I do it again? YES, but with fear and trembling.

May our LORD bless you richly from HIS storehouse as you seek to serve HIM.
