Bowing Before the Savior - Matthew 2:1-23 - December 30, 2007

Sunday School Lesson – Bowing Before the Savior – December 30, 2007

This is our final lesson in our series “The Savior of Christmas.”

Our scripture is Matthew 2:1-23.

Speculation is that by the time the wise men found JESUS, HE was two (2) years old or less. This is based upon Matthew 2:16, when King Herod issued the order to kill all the male babies two (2) years old and under. King Herod was paranoid about any person taking over his throne.

The Apostle Matthew wrote his gospel with the Jews as his intended audience. He quoted more Old Testament prophesies than the other gospel writers. Doctor Luke wrote his account from a historical, factual point-of-view.

Matthew made it clear that these events took place after the birth of JESUS.
Wise men came from the east. It is speculated that they had traveled about a 1,000 miles. These wise men were referred to as magi. Some believe they were kings but there is nothing to back this up. But being wise men they likely advised kings. Speculation is that they were Gentiles or possibly half Jews. We are not sure how many there were. We assume three (3) since there were three (3) gifts. These wise men apparently studied the heavens as astronomers and astrologers. I must quickly say that GOD condemns astrology. So do not take this as an okay to practice or read your horoscope or anything else dealing with such.

Let’s read Matthew 2:1-6:
Wise Men Seek the King
1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King • Herod, • wise men from the east arrived unexpectedly in Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east[1] Or star at its rising and have come to worship Him.”[2] Or to pay Him homage 3 When King Herod heard this, he was deeply disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 So he assembled all the • chief priests and • scribes of the people and asked them where the • Messiah would be born. 5 “In Bethlehem of Judea,” they told him, “because this is what was written by the prophet: 6 And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah: because out of you will come a leader who will shepherd My people Israel.”[3]

The Apostle Matthew begins his gospel by making it clear “after” the birth of JESUS in Bethlehem and while Herod is King of that area these things happened. There were several Kings that went by the name of Herod. This King was Herod the Great. He was half Jew. He was a shrewd politician and maintained his kingship over Judea, Galilee and Perea even though he had supported Mark Antony (his brother-in-law, who left his sister to marry Cleopatri). Mark Antony was defeated by Octavius (Caesar Augustus). Herod maintained his kingship.

[It is interesting that Octavius was born Gaius Octavius but was adopted by his mothers uncle, Julius Caesar. He took the name of his adoptive father thus he was named Gaius Julius Caesar Octavian. The name Augustus was conferred on him by the Roman Senate in 27 B.C. Augustus means “revered one.”]

Now back to Herod the Great. He was paranoid about anyone taking over his throne. He suspected many of trying to take over his throne and had them killed. In fact he had his wife and several of his sons killed. So naturally when Herod heard that a king of the Jews had been born, he was deeply disturbed and sprang into action by calling in all his advisors. The wise men had not gone directly to Herod seeking the new born king but had been inquiring about this new born king. But the king heard about this inquiry.

The star either guided the wise men to Jerusalem or they concluded that since they were seeking a new born king, just maybe the child was a child of the current king.
Since Herod was paranoid he likely had spies stationed to listen and report any news that would be of useful intelligence. There are always people seeking favor with those in authority. Someone reported to Herod that an unexpected group of wise men were in Jerusalem seeking a new born king. It would also be logical for the wise men to speculate that the current king would know about such a birth.

Herod’s advisors told him that the scriptures confirmed that the Messiah or deliverer would be born in Bethlehem.

Micah 5:2:
2 [2] Mc 5:1 in Hb Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are small among the clans of Judah; One will come from you to be ruler over Israel for Me.[3] 2 Ch 7:18; Isa 11:1; Mt 2:6 His origin[4] Lit His going out is from antiquity, from eternity.[5] Or from ancient times

So King Herod is now armed with the facts. He has a plan!

Let’s read Matthew 2:7-8:

7 Then Herod secretly summoned the wise men and asked them the exact time the star appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. When you find Him, report back to me so that I too can go and worship Him.”[4]

We can see the treachery, deceit and cunning that comes from Herod. He secretly summoned the wise men to come to him. This was apparently the first time the king and the wise men had met. The king was armed with the facts and could talk as if he knew all about this new born future king. He asked the wise men to tell him when they first saw the star? No telling what words he said leading up to this question. I am sure he was very convincing that he wanted to check the time they saw the star with the same time his advisors also saw the star. If their times of observation coincided, then it would be the child promised in the scriptures and he would also want to go worship him. So they could find the child and report back to him. What a plan!

Herod was used to giving orders which were carried out exactly as he requested. He was convinced that these wise men would do as he asked. He likely patted himself on the back and gloated with pride as to how clever he was. Apparently he didn’t send anyone to follow the wise men to see if they found the child because his ego was convinced that they would report back to him.

It was, also, likely that Herod’s advisors did not see the star the wise men saw. So let them go find this new born king.

Let’s read Matthew 2:9-12:

9 After hearing the king, they went on their way. And there it was—the star they had seen in the east![5] Or star . . . at its rising It led them until it came and stopped above the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed beyond measure. 11 Entering the house, they saw the child with Mary His mother, and falling to their knees, they worshiped Him.[6] Or they paid Him homage Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their own country by another route.

The wise men left the king’s presence and to their delight they saw the star. Apparently GOD guided them to King Herod and now that this part of HIS plan was completed, the star reappeared and the wise men continued to follow the star to the place where the child was located. The use of the word “child” indicates that the child was between one (1) and two (2) years old. The word for “child” is different than the word for “infant” used when JESUS was born.

The star revealed where the child was located and the wise men were overwhelmed with joy when they finally arrived at their destination. Finding something we have passionately sought is always a joyful feeling. They may have begun to question whether or not they might even find the child they sought. After all the king did not seem to be interested in this child that could be a threat to his throne. However, they were faithful to their quest and received the joy of finding the Messiah.

Wise people still seek HIM today and when they finally encounter HIM they too rejoice and worship HIM.

As mentioned earlier, it is here that we assume there are three (3) wise men because of the three (3) gifts – gold, frankincense (a fragrant gum) and myrrh (a precious spice used for perfumes and embalming.) All three (3) gifts are suitable for a king and were of value. Little did they know that these gifts could be used to sustain the King of Kings and HIS parents when they flee to Egypt to escape the wrath of King Herod.

GOD is in all things and HE used the wise men to make the king and his advisors aware of and to confirm the arrival of the Messiah. They had an opportunity to seek the Messiah. The wise men found the Messiah and their gifts were likely used to provide resources for JESUS and HIS family while they are in Egypt. GOD changed the direction of the wise men through a dream. All of these events confirmed to the wise men that the child they had sought and found was the promised Messiah.

When we seek and find JESUS by asking HIM to forgive us of our sins, the HOLY SPIRIT confirms in our hearts that JESUS is the Messiah. Our sins are forgiven and we experience the miracle of rebirth which makes us a child of GOD. The HOLY SPIRIT confirms this fact in our hearts. The Apostle Paul captures this in Romans 8:15-17.

Romans 8:15-17:
15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “• Abba, Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children, 17 and if children, also heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ—seeing that[13] Or provided that we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

Let’s read Matthew 2:13-15:
The Flight into Egypt
13 After they were gone, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Get up! Take the child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. For Herod is about to search for the child to destroy Him.” 14 So he got up, took the child and His mother during the night, and escaped to Egypt. 15 He stayed there until Herod’s death, so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled: Out of Egypt I called My Son.[7] Hs 11:1

GOD told Joseph through a dream to get up and take his family to Egypt and stay in Egypt until HE tells him to leave. Joseph is obedient and immediately takes action because Herod is preparing to destroy JESUS. GOD had provided Joseph with the resources to flee, so Joseph does not hesitate.

The prophesy in verse 15 is captured in:
Hosea 11:1:
1 When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son.[1] Mt 2:15
Let’s read Matthew 2:16-18:
The Massacre of the Innocents
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been outwitted by the wise men, flew into a rage. He gave orders to massacre all the male children in and around Bethlehem who were two years[8] Lit were from two years old and under, in keeping with the time he had learned from the wise men. 17 Then what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: 18 A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping,[9] Other mss read Ramah, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; and she refused to be consoled, because they were no more.[10] Jr 31:15

King Herod realized that the wise men were not returning to him. He did not know it was GOD WHO changed the direction of the wise men.

Was this an opportunity for King Herod to find JESUS and worship HIM? We do not know. We can only speculate that GOD did give Herod and his advisors the opportunity to find JESUS for the right reasons. After all Herod’s advisors had confirmed that the scriptures had revealed that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. But Herod’s nature over took him and he ordered that all male children two (2) years and younger be killed in the area around Bethlehem.

The prophesy in verse 18 is captured in:
Jeremiah 31:15:
15 This is what the Lord says: A voice was heard in Ramah, a lament with bitter weeping— Rachel weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted for her children because they are no more.[19] Mt 2:18
There is no record of this slaughter. But scholars seem to think that since Bethlehem was a small area that it would not be recorded. But GOD had prophesied this tragic event in the scriptures.

Let’s read Matthew 2:19-23:
The Holy Family in Nazareth
19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Get up! Take the child and His mother and go to the land of Israel, because those who sought the child’s life are dead.” 21 So he got up, took the child and His mother, and entered the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus[11] A son of Herod the Great who ruled a portion of his father’s kingdom 4 b.c.–a.d. 6 was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned in a dream, he withdrew to the region of Galilee. 23 Then he went and settled in a town called Nazareth to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets, that He will be called a • Nazarene.

When Herod died GOD, revealed to Joseph that it was time to leave Egypt. GOD commanded Joseph to leave Egypt. HIS command for Joseph to leave Egypt was as urgent as HIS command was for Joseph to leave Bethlehem. Again, Joseph was obedient. GOD directed Joseph to where HE wanted HIS ONLY SON JESUS to be raised, Nazareth.

Matthew stated that Nazareth was spoken through the prophets. There is no reference to such prophesy in the Old Testament. However in Isaiah 11:1 -
1 Then a shoot will grow from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit. – The word “Branch” is similar to the word for Nazarene.

Bible scholars think that Matthew interpreted the word “branch” in Isaiah 11:1 for Nazarene.

As children of GOD, HE also directs our lives and where HE wants us to live and raise HIS children. As we approach a new year ask GOD to confirm in your heart that you are where HE wants you to be both physically and spiritually. HE will direct your paths as you yield your lives to HIM.

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND MAY OUR LORD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY RICHLY FROM HIS STOREHOUSE!!!

Celebrating the Savior's Bith - Luke 2:1-20 - December 23, 2007

Sunday School Lesson – Celebrating the Savior’s Birth – December 23, 2007

Our scripture is Luke 2:1-20.

Our lesson brings us to one of the most magnificent events in all of human history, the birth of the Messiah.

We are not certain of the year, month or the day JESUS was born. Christians chose December 25 in the fourth (4th) century likely to coincide with the winter solstice. The pagans also celebrated a pagan holiday during that same time period therefore Christians decided they would celebrate the birth of CHRIST. Scholars believe that JESUS was born either in the spring or fall of the year because shepherds were in the fields at night. It was a practice for the shepherds to keep their sheep in folds during the winter months from November until March. However there is an exception. Sheep that were used for sacrifices were kept year round in fields in Bethlehem.

Bethlehem was about six (6) miles from the temple in Jerusalem. So we do not know the time of the year that JESUS was born. The most important thing is that HE WAS BORN of a VIRGIN in Bethlehem as foretold in the scriptures.

Doctor Luke gives us the historical time period for the birth of JESUS. Luke tells us that JESUS was born while Caesar Augustus was the emperor of the Roman Empire which was from 27 B.C. to 14 A.D. Also the scriptures tell us that JESUS was born while Herod was king of the Jews and Quirinius was governing Syria.

Speculation is that JESUS was born about 4 B.C. because Dionysius Exiguus in the sixth (6th) century made a miscalculation.

In the sixth (6th) century Dionysius Exiguus, a monk, lived at the Vatican around 500 A.D. and Pope John I asked him to calculate the dates for Easter for about a 100 year time span. However, while doing his calculations his focus shifted from Easter to December 25, which was the date in 336 A.D. Christians choose to celebrate the birth of JESUS.

In 274 A.D. the Roman Emperor Aurelian established a civic holiday on December 25 to honor the birth of the sun god Mithras. So on December 25, 336 A.D. the Christians in that area began celebrating the birth of the SON of GOD, JESUS.

Any way Dionysius Exiguus created a new calendar using the birth of CHRIST as the dividing date to record history. Thus we have B.C. or “before CHRIST” and A.D. (Anno Domini) Latin for “the year of our LORD” also often referred to as “After the Death of CHRIST.” However, Dionysius Exiguus made a miscalculation in his new calendar, which places the approximate birth of CHRIST about 4 B.C. Never-the-less the birth of JESUS continues to divide and record human history.

Let’s read Luke 2:1-20:
The Birth of Jesus
1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus[1] Emperor who ruled the Roman Empire 27 b.c.–a.d. 14; also known as Octavian, he established the peaceful era known as the Pax Romana; Caesar was a title of Roman emperors. that the whole empire[2] Or the whole inhabited world should be registered. 2 This first registration took place while[3] Or This registration was the first while, or This registration was before Quirinius was governing Syria. 3 So everyone went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family line of David, 5 to be registered along with Mary, who was • engaged to him[4] Other mss read was his engaged wife and was pregnant. 6 While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 Then she gave birth to her firstborn Son, and she wrapped Him snugly in cloth and laid Him in a feeding trough—because there was no room for them at the inn.

GOD uses various means to accomplish HIS plans. HE used Caesar to send out a decree that all must go to the place of their ancestral roots to register. This registration was a census for tax purposes. This meant that Joseph and Mary had to return to Bethlehem because they were of the house of David.

The trip from Nazareth to Bethlehem was about 70 miles. Bethlehem is south of Nazareth but it was a climb from 1,830 feet above sea level to 2,564 feet above sea level. (For those in Spartanburg it is about the distance from Spartanburg to Asheville, NC. The elevation from Spartanburg airport to the Asheville airport is 963 Mean Sea Level VS 2,165 Mean Sea Level.)

This was a tough trip for a young pregnant woman. So why did Mary make the trip? There are several possibilities:

(1) The scripture uses the word “everyone” in verse 3. So she may not have had a choice. Mary and Joseph were both of the house of David. This was good because they could both go to the same place to register. There is another reason.

(2) It is likely Caesar required all the descendants of any royal linage to register - men, women, children and expectant mothers bearing a child of royal heritage. Joseph and Mary were of royal lineage coming from the ancestral line of King David.

(3) The registration was also important because the registration would create a record of the royal lineage of Mary, Joseph and the child Mary would soon birth. This would be a record to show that JESUS also came from the lineage of King David for historical purposes. A record of Jewish family heritage was very important to the Jews.

(4) Likely Mary had no choice but to go and register. It was likely mandated by the government. This ensured she would make the trip. Historical records also show that girls 12 years old and older had to pay a tax.

The bottom line, GOD was in control and HE wanted Mary in Bethlehem as foretold in the scriptures. It is likely Mary, who knew the scriptures, had already figured out that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. Even though it was a tough trip she wanted to be obedient to GOD. She knew why she had to go to Bethlehem.

When we serve our LORD, we also will face difficult times.

Mary’s time for the birth of JESUS arrived while they were in Bethlehem. They tried to find a room in the local inn but there was no room. Some Bible scholars say the fact that Mary and Joseph were denied a room shows that they were poor. If they had been well off or rich they would have gotten a room. But the innkeeper offered them the place where the animals were sheltered, which was likely a cave carved back into an overhanging rock. The feeding trough was likely part of the cave wall that had been carved or chiseled to make a cut out suitable to hold food for animals.

Mary gave birth to baby JESUS. She wrapped HIM in strips of cloth or swaddled HIM. It is likely that Mary brought the cloth with her since she was getting close to her delivery time. These would have been clean strips of cloth to wrap around the baby to keep HIM warm. These same strips could also have been used to wrap the body of a dead person to prepare him or her for burial. The strips of cloth had a dual purpose to wrap the body of a baby as life begins to keep it warm or to wrap the body of a dead person at the end of life to prepare the body for burial. This is symbolic of JESUS. HE was born for the purpose of giving eternal life to all who believe in HIM by dying for the sins of all mankind. HE is the alpha and the omega or the beginning and the end.

After JESUS was born and was swaddled, Mary laid HIM in a manager or feeding trough. The feeding trough is generally depicted as made from wood but as mentioned earlier it was likely chiseled out as part of the shelter rock wall. I am sure Mary and Joseph made real sure it was very clean and likely lined it with clean hay or straw. It was unusual for a baby to be found in a feeding trough. But it certainly identified the location of baby JESUS for the shepherds.

The birth of JESUS shows the very humble and poor conditions that GOD brought the King of Kings and the LORD of LORD’S into the world so no person could ever feel that JESUS was superior to them. HE came to live and to give HIS life for every human who will ever be conceived upon earth.

Such a humble beginning but GOD can take any life yielded to HIM and make it a life of purpose and meaning. If you have not yielded your life to HIM, do it now.
Baby JESUS was born in Bethlehem. GOD told the prophet Micah that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem: (Remember Mary knew the scripture.)

Bethlehem means “House of Bread.” Isn’t it fitting that the Bread of Life is born in the “House of Bread?” Bread sustains physical life and all who accept JESUS as their SAVIOR are sustained eternally by the Bread of Life.

1 Samuel 16:1:
1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long are you going to mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel?[1] 1 Sm 13:13–14; 15:23 Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem because I have selected a king from his sons.”

Bethlehem is the birth place of King David. King David was a man after GOD’S own heart but he sinned. He repented of his sin and asked GOD for forgiveness. GOD forgave him but he had to suffer the consequences of his sin. Even though David sinned and suffered the consequences for his sin, GOD made a promise to King David as we see in 2 Samuel 7:16-17.

2 Samuel 7:16-17:

16 Your house and kingdom will endure before Me[12] Some Hb mss, LXX, Syr; other Hb mss read you forever, and your throne will be established forever.’ ”[13] Ps 89:29,36 17 Nathan (The Prophet) spoke all these words and this entire vision to David.[14] 1 Ch 17:3–15

The prophet Nathan revealed the promise of GOD to King David. This was prophesying that the Messiah would come through the ancestry of King David. We see this prophesy fulfilled and confirmed in the message the angel Gabriel delivered to Mary in Luke 1:32.

Luke 1:32:
32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.[13] 2 Sm 7:12–13
GOD is in all things bringing about HIS work and will. HIS ways are different from our ways and HIS thoughts different from our thoughts. When we anticipate how HE is going to accomplish something for us or in our lives, we are most often wrong. HE knows what we need and how we can fit into HIS work. GOD has HIS work going on all around us. We often try to get GOD to do our work and what we think HE should be doing. We need to shift our focus from what we want to what GOD wants for us to do. We need to ask GOD to prepare us, equip us and open our spiritual eyes to see the work HE is doing. Seek the relationship with HIM and then allow HIM to direct your lives as HE chooses. Then at the proper moment HE will open your eyes to HIS work and that will be your opportunity to join HIM in HIS work.

JESUS is born so now it is time, as any proud DADDY would do, tell the world. So does GOD go to the most prominent people in Bethlehem? Let’s see?

Let’s read Luke 2:8-15:
The Shepherds and the Angels
8 In the same region, shepherds were staying out in the fields and keeping watch at night over their flock. 9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before[5] Or Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.[6] Lit they feared a great fear 10 But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: 11 today a Savior, who is • Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David. 12 This will be the sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a feeding trough.” 13 Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: 14 Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people He favors![7] Other mss read earth good will to people [8] Or earth to men of good will [9] Lk 12:51 15 When the angels had left them and returned to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go straight to Bethlehem and see what has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”

No, GOD did not announce the birth of HIS only son to the mighty, prominent, wealthy or royalty but to lowly shepherds. Shepherds were on the low rung of the social latter. They were considered outcasts but important to the Jews because they raised the sheep that were offered as sacrifices in the temple and sheep were a food source. The shepherds were smelly but important. So again GOD chose the lowly and the most unlikely to reveal the fact that HIS SON the Messiah had been born and how they could identify HIM – A baby lying in a feeding trough – This is unusual.

When the birth of JESUS was announced an angel stood before the shepherds. There was a special light that illumined the area. Just as JESUS is the light of the world, HIS birth announcement began with a special light that shone all around. The light illumined the physical area to confirm what the shepherds heard was a special message from GOD. CHRIST illumines the hearts of mankind to confirm the forgiveness of sin when we invite HIM into our hearts.

There was no mistake this message was from GOD. The shepherds were frightened but quickly the angel put their minds at ease. “Don’t be afraid!” The same calming message the angel Gabriel had to give to Zechariah and Mary when he gave them their news. The angel needed to calm them down so they could focus on the message.

The angel told them that the Messiah had been born in the City of David and how to identify HIM. HE is wrapped in cloth and lying in a feeding trough. If JESUS had been born in the inn, the shepherds would most likely have been reluctant to go there because of their social standing. They likely thought, “But go see this baby in a feeding trough? Why not check it out because we are around feeding troughs all day long, this we have to see. Plus this announcement with lights and heavenly beings is so overwhelming we need to check it out to make sure we haven’t been dreaming. Could this be for real?” So they waste no time and immediately leave to find this special baby lying is a feeding trough.

Let’s read Luke 2:16-20:

16 They hurried off and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby who was lying in the feeding trough. 17 After seeing [them]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. , they reported the message they were told about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary was treasuring up all these things[10] Lit these words in her heart and meditating on them. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had seen and heard, just as they had been told.

The shepherds confirmed their encounter with the heavenly hosts. They found baby Messiah, just as they had been told. Seeing, they believed.

They saw with their physical eyes and it was confirmed in their hearts because they immediately began telling others about the birth of the Messiah. The shepherds were the first evangelists to spread the good news of the birth of the Messiah. All who heard what the shepherds had to say were amazed.

The shepherds saw and believed. We see with our spiritual eyes and have to make a choice. Do we believe or are we amazed with the story? Many people can accept JESUS intellectually and are amazed with the story. It takes a step of faith to move from knowing about JESUS or having head knowledge about JESUS to having heart knowledge of JESUS. When JESUS is confirmed in your heart it is a knowing that HE is in you and you are in HIM. Through the miracle of rebirth you are born into GOD’S family. You become HIS child the moment you ask CHRIST to forgive you of your sins and to come into your live.

Romans 8:15-17 tells us:

15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “• Abba, Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children, 17 and if children, also heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ—seeing that[13] Or provided that we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

The Apostle Paul captures the purpose of JESUS in Galatians:
Galatians 4:1-7:
1 Now I say that as long as the heir is a child, he differs in no way from a slave, though he is the owner of everything. 2 Instead, he is under guardians and stewards until the time set by his father. 3 In the same way we also, when we were children, were in slavery under the elemental forces of the world. 4 But when the completion of the time came, God sent His Son, born of a woman,[1] Gn 3:15; Lk 2:7 born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our[2] Other mss read your hearts, crying, “• Abba, Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

Ephesians 1:18-19 the Apostle Paul tells us about the eyes of our heart:

18 [I pray]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the glorious riches of His inheritance among the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power to us who believe, according to the working of His vast strength.

It is in the eyes of our heart that our spirit comes into contact with the Spirit of GOD or the HOLY SPIRIT to confirm or deny our relationship with HIM. It is also the place where GOD reveals truth to HIS children and confirms or denies whether or not we belong to HIM.

The shepherds left telling what had happened to them. Mary hid these things in her heart and she treasured all of these moments which confirmed in her heart that she had given birth to the Messiah.

This is true of us today. Even though we are doing the will of the LORD, we often need reminders during some difficult times in our lives. This is why we need to treasure HIS Word in our hearts and the confirmations of the ministry HE has chosen for us.

The shepherds continued to tell the good news to all who would listen. Once we have encountered JESUS we also need to tell the Good News to those we encounter each day as we are led by the HOLY SPIRIT. It may be a word of encouragement. Do not worry if you have not led someone to CHRIST. Just be obedient to what our LORD lays upon your heart to do or say. We may offer a cup of cold water, a gentle smile or a kind word of encouragement. All fits into the plan and work of GOD.

There is no better time than CHRISTMAS to ask CHRIST to forgive you of your sins and to come into your life. Being Changed By the Savior - Luke 1:26-56 - December 16, 2007

Sunday School Lesson – Being Changed By the Savior – December 16, 2007

This is lesson three (3) in our series, “The Savior of Christmas.”

We began with the prophesy GOD gave the Prophet Isaiah about the coming Messiah. This was about 681 B.C. Then last Sunday we studied the herald GOD had chosen to prepare the way for the Messiah, John the Baptist. This Sunday we will study the events surrounding the birth of the Messiah, JESUS.

In last Sunday’s lesson we saw that the angel Gabriel told Zechariah that he and Elizabeth would be parents of a boy. They were to name the child John. Zechariah questioned Gabriel about how was that possible since he and Elizabeth were so old. Lack of faith coming from a priest is not good. So Gabriel told him he would be unable to speak until the event had occurred.

Let’s read Luke 1:26-33:

26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin • engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And [the angel]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. came to her and said, “Rejoice, favored woman! The Lord is with you.”[12] Other mss add blessed are you among women 29 But she was deeply troubled by this statement, wondering what kind of greeting this could be. 30 Then the angel told her: Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 Now listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will call His name JESUS. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.[13] 2 Sm 7:12–13 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.[14] Isaiah 9:6 LXX; Dn 7:14

The sixth month refers to the sixth (6th) month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy. Elizabeth, the mother to be of John the Baptist, and Mary, the mother of JESUS, are cousins. The angel Gabriel visited Mary where she lived and he either confirmed or informed her of Elizabeth’s pregnancy. As you recall Gabriel visited Zechariah while he was serving in the Holy of Holies in the temple.

The scripture tells us that Mary was a virgin and she lived in the small town of Nazareth. Being a virgin meant she had not had sex with anyone and not simply a young girl, although Mary was likely in her early teens. Mary was engaged to Joseph who is from the linage of King David but so was Mary.

Being engaged to each other meant they had agreed to marry but they had not married. Their engagement was similar to the engagements of today except with restrictions and expectations. Their engagement period could last for years depending upon the age of the couple. Two (2) fathers could agree for their very young children to be married when they became of age.

During the period of engagement the couple was considered to be married. The couple was expected to remain faithful to each other during this period. If the woman was sexually unfaithful, it was considered adultery. The woman and her partner in adultery could be stoned to death. The events about to unfold in Mary’s life carried serious consequences.

The angel Gabriel tells her not to be afraid because he has some good news for her. The Israelites were desperately waiting and hoping for the Messiah. They wanted deliverance from the rule of Rome. The young girls during that period longed to be the mother of the Messiah. Little did they know how that was to come about. They thought they would get married and their first born would have special abilities and would become the deliverer of the nation of Israel from their oppression.

When Gabriel greeted her she was puzzled and quizzical. She must have thought, “Why am I favored?” Gabriel tells her that her favor comes from GOD and she will conceive a child and she is to name the child JESUS. HE will be the Son of the Most High. Wow!!! Gabriel is telling her she will conceive the Messiah. She will be the one for this great honor. HIS rule will never end. This must have overwhelmed her. But she was young and hoped for such a happening but there was a major problem that had to be resolved. She wasn’t married.

Mary asks a very important question.

Let’s read Luke 1:34-38:

34 Mary asked the angel, “How can this be, since I have not been intimate with a man?”[15] Lit since I do not know a man 35 The angel replied to her: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the holy One to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 And consider your relative Elizabeth—even she has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.”[16] Gn 18:14 38 “I am the Lord’s • slave,”[17] Lit Look, the Lord’s slave said Mary. “May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel left her.

Mary wanted and needed to know how this was going to happen since she had never had sex. She knew what caused children. She knew she was engaged to Joseph. Did this mean they needed to go from being engaged to being married? Her thoughts were, as with anyone, sex has to be involved so I need your guidance.

Gabriel tells her what she needs to know. The HOLY SPIRIT will come upon her and through HIS power she will conceive.

This is so beautiful for us to study now but it must have been shocking to Mary. We have the privilege of knowing all of the scripture.

The word “overshadowing” is the same word used in Genesis when GOD created earth.

Genesis 1:1-2:
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was[1] Or When God began to create the sky and the earth, 2 the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

The word “create” carries the idea of power and the creation of something from nothing. Only GOD can create something from nothing.

Let’s consider the word “hovering” which is used in Genesis 1:2. The word “overshadow” is also captured in the meaning of the word “hovering”. When GOD created the heavens and earth HE hovered or checked out every minute detail to ensure that all things needed to sustain earth and the inhabitants of earth were in place. When HE was satisfied that all was in place HE set the worlds into motion.

GOD gave life to Adam with HIS breath. GOD gave life to a sculptured body of dirt. By the same power GOD gave life to Mary’s egg/seed. JESUS had to be born of woman and not the result of the union between woman and man. This is captured in Genesis 3:14-15:

14 Then the Lord God said to the serpent: Because you have done this, you are cursed more than any livestock and more than any wild animal. You will move on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life. 15 I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your • seed and her seed. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.[11] Heb 2:14; 1 Jn 3:8

The serpent is Satan in verse 14. In verse 15, GOD tells Satan there will be hostility between his seed and her seed. Her seed is JESUS. Satan would try to kill JESUS but HE will crush your head. JESUS is the victor. The fact that the seed of woman would defeat Satan is foretold in Genesis and comes about thousands of years later through GOD empowering the seed of woman which resulted in the birth of JESUS.

The contrasts between Satan and JESUS are staggering. These are just a few to get us thinking:
Darkness vs. Light
Despair vs. Hope
Condemnation vs. Forgiveness
Death vs. Life
Deceit vs. Truth
Defeat vs. Victory

In verse 36 Gabriel either informed Mary of Elizabeth’s pregnancy or reminded her of the power of GOD to create life which transcends human understanding or ability. Gabriel reminds Mary that nothing is impossible with GOD.

Mary responded with a resounding expression of complete faith and trust as the LORD’S bond slave. Mary considering herself as a bond salve of the LORD meant she was willing to be completely obedient to GOD’S request.

Mary’s response was an expression of faith, not only for GOD to bring it about but also to handle the details associated with HIS request.

Let’s read Luke 1:39-56:

39 In those days Mary set out and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judah 40 where she entered Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped inside her,[18] Lit leaped in her abdomen or womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 Then she exclaimed with a loud cry: You are the most blessed of women, and your child will be blessed![19] Lit and the fruit of your abdomen (or womb) is blessed 43 How could this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For you see, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped for joy inside me![20] Lit in my abdomen or womb 45 She who has believed is blessed because what was spoken to her by the Lord will be fulfilled!”

Mary went to visit Elizabeth. This was a trip of 50-70 miles. Was Mary curious to check out what Gabriel had told her or did she need to talk with Elizabeth about her encounter with Gabriel? What ever the reason, Elizabeth was the first person to acknowledge the SAVIOR of the world. Elizabeth’s baby, John, leaped for joy in her body. The acknowledgement was a confirmation to Mary that what was spoken to her would be fulfilled. When her faith was confirmed Mary broke out in a song of praise.

Mary’s Praise or Magnificat
46 And Mary said: My soul proclaims the greatness of[21] Or soul magnifies the Lord,[22] 1 Sm 2:1–10 47 and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior, 48 because He has looked with favor on the humble condition of His • slave. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 because the Mighty One[23] Ps 89:8; Zph 3:17 has done great things for me, and His name is holy. 50 His mercy is from generation to generation on those who fear Him. 51 He has done a mighty deed with His arm; He has scattered the proud because of the thoughts of their hearts; 52 He has toppled the mighty from their thrones and exalted the lowly. 53 He has satisfied the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped His servant Israel, mindful of His mercy,[24] Because He remembered His mercy; see Ps 98:3 55 just as He spoke to our ancestors, to Abraham and his descendants[25] Or offspring; lit seed forever. 56 And Mary stayed with her about three months; then she returned to her home.

Mary had already committed her body to serve GOD, now she verbally committed her soul and her spirit to GOD. This song reflects the wonderful relationship Mary had with GOD. This shows her heart and it shows why GOD found favor with her. Even though Mary was poor, GOD had found favor with her because she was rich spiritually. This is a message to us all. GOD looks upon our hearts and not the conditions or circumstances where we live.

When Mary refers to the Mighty One, she is referring to GOD’S awesome power to create. This is an expression of Mary’s belief and confidence in GOD. HE created the worlds; therefore, creating life in her body through a miracle is no mystery.

Mary’s song continues where she lists additional attributes of GOD.

Let’s read Luke 1:51-56:

Mary’s song is a clear expression of her knowledge of the scriptures and of GOD. This young lady not only knew the scriptures, she had absolute faith in GOD, HIS ability and power. Again, GOD found favor with her. HE knew her heart and the motive for her obedience. She was not only sexually pure but she also had a pure heart. GOD empowered her seed to produce GOD’S ONLY SON, JESUS. JESUS through HIS obedience to the FATHER would give HIS life for mankind to crush, once for all, the penalty of sin which is death as promised in Genesis 2:15-17:

15 The Lord God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and watch over it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden,[16] Gn 3:1–2 17 but you must not eat[17] Lit eat from it from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.”[18] Gn 3:5

The man and woman ate the forbidden fruit which brought the consequences GOD had promised – Death for mankind. When we accept JESUS as the Messiah and ask HIM to forgive us of our sins, HE does and we receive the miracle of rebirth in our spirit.

When we die and step out of our earth suit/body, we will be face to face with JESUS forever. All believers who have died will remain in heaven with GOD and JESUS until the FATHER gives JESUS permission to return to earth for the second time. At that moment all believers in heaven will return with HIM. They will follow immediately behind HIM. All believers who are alive will instantly receive their new glorified bodies and be raptured from earth. Our new glorified bodies will be just like JESUS’ glorified body.

Mary stayed with Elizabeth until she either birthed John or shortly before Elizabeth gave birth. Either way she left full of joy and the knowledge that she was pregnant with the Messiah. Her visit with Elizabeth confirmed many things in her mind. She knew GOD was in the business of miracles and was confident HE would work out all the details that a young engaged pregnant woman would face.

Mary was comforted by the miracle that GOD had performed in the lives of Zechariah and Elizabeth. All we need to do is look around us each day and we can see the handiwork and miracles of our LORD. May each of our hearts be filled with the joy of CHRIST in us. It all began with a tiny babe in a manger and HIS name is JESUS. May our LORD bless each of you richly from HIS storehouse. My prayer is that no one will tell HIM, sorry there is no room in my heart for YOU. HE died just for you. Invite HIM into your heart now. HIS present for you is forgiveness and eternal life.

Getting Ready for the Savior - Luke 1:5-25, 57-80 - December 9, 2007

Sunday School Lesson – Getting Ready for the Savior – December 9, 2007

This is lesson two (2) in our series of study “The Savior of Christmas.”

Our background scripture is Luke 1: 5-25, 57-80.

We are fast forwarding from last week’s lesson to the fulfillment of the prophesy GOD revealed through the Prophet Isaiah some 681 years earlier. King Herod of Judea ruled Israel from 37-4 B.C. During the later part of King Herod of Judea’s rule these events occurred.

We know that Luke was a physician and wrote the book of Luke for a believer named Theophilus. Apparently there were many versions of the history of the facts surrounding the birth and lives of John the Baptist and JESUS. Luke produced a detailed, accurate, well documented account of these facts so Theophilus would know for sure that he knew the truth about these events. I think that is so neat because the truth and certainty of these events are also important to us today.

Our lesson today centers on John the Baptist or John the Baptizer, who is to herald or announce the coming of the Messiah.

Daniel 3:4:
4 A herald loudly proclaimed, “People of every nation and language, you are commanded:

Isaiah 52:7:
7 How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the herald, who proclaims peace, who brings news of good things,[4] Rm 10:15 who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”

A herald would go before a king to announce his coming or a message from the king to the people. GOD would announce the coming of the KING of KINGS through a herald, John the Baptist. John the Baptist is the cousin of JESUS. Mary the mother of JESUS is the cousin of Elizabeth, the mother of John.

There are two (2) Old Testament scriptures that give prophesy regarding the herald who will announce the Messiah.

Isaiah 40:3:
3 A voice of one crying out: Prepare the way of the Lord in the wilderness;[2] Mt 3:3; Mk 1:3; Lk 3:4; Jn 1:23 make a straight highway for our God in the desert.

Malachi 3:1:
1 “See, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me.[1] Isa 40:3; Mk 1:2 Then the Lord you seek will suddenly come to His temple, the Messenger of the covenant[2] Ex 23:20; 33:2 you desire—see, He is coming,” says the Lord of • Hosts.

Let’s read Luke 1:5-13:

5 In the days of King • Herod of Judea, there was a priest of Abijah’s (a BUY jah) division[3] One of the 24 divisions of priests appointed by David for temple service; 1 Ch 24:10 named Zechariah. His wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 Both were righteous in God’s sight, living without blame according to all the commandments and requirements of the Lord. 7 But they had no children[4] Lit child because Elizabeth could not conceive,[5] Lit Elizabeth was sterile or barren and both of them were well along in years.[6] Lit in their days 8 When his division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, 9 it happened that he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and burn incense. 10 At the hour of incense the whole assembly of the people was praying outside. 11 An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and overcome with fear.[7] Lit and fear fell on him 13 But the angel said to him: Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John.

The time is during the rule of King Herod. Zechariah is a priest from the division of Abijah (a BUY jah) and his wife Elizabeth is from the priestly blood line of Aaron. Both Zechariah and Elizabeth are descendants of Aaron. Aaron is the brother of Moses and the first high priest. Moses had protested about speaking to the Pharaoh. So GOD designated Aaron as Moses official spokesperson. This is about 1,500 B.C. GOD is using Moses and Aaron to lead HIS people out of the bondage of slavery. Now 1,500 years later through descendants of Aaron, GOD is preparing the way for mankind to be delivered from the bondage of sin and death. GOD is awesome!!!!!

Both Zechariah and Elizabeth are Godly people. This is made clear because it was a common belief that a woman was barren or could not conceive a child because of some sin in her life. So Doctor Luke is making it clear that these are Godly people. But more important is the fact that they knew how people looked upon their childless situation but they remained faithful to GOD.

They are up in age, how old we are not sure but past the time when they could conceive a child based upon common knowledge. Over the years they had prayed and asked GOD to bless them with a child. But so far no child and had likely stopped asking.

There were twenty-four (24) divisions of priests. Each division served in the temple in Jerusalem for one (1) week each, two (2) times a year. All divisions served in the temple during the peak periods of the feasts of Passover, Pentecost and Tabernacles.

Zechariah is one of about 18,000 priests who served in the temple during that time. The priests lived in the surrounding area and served the people in the community where they lived. But twice a year each division had to serve in the temple. The duties of the priests were determined by casting lots. The odds of a priest being selected to go into the Holy of Holies were very small. But on this day GOD chose Zechariah to be the priest to enter the Holy of Holies. This was a great honor but also a fearful duty. This was a once in a lifetime event for a priest. This was Zechariah’s day! He just didn’t know how good it would be for him until it was over.

The priest had to first confess his own sins and offer a sacrifice for his own sins and then he offered a sacrifice for the sins of the people. Then he went into the Holy of Holies. A rope was tied to the priest before they entered the Holy of Holies in case he died or was killed by GOD while he was in there. The other priests could drag his body out using the rope without having to enter the Holy of Holies. Just think we as Christians have the HOLY SPIRIT indwelling us 24/7. We can approach our FATHER any time we choose without fearing if we are acceptable to GOD. We are truly blessed because our sins have been covered by the blood of JESUS.

After Zechariah entered the Holy of Holies, he encountered an angel. It is reasonable to conclude that Zechariah was uptight about entering the Holy of Holies. When he saw the angel he was startled and overcome with fear. The angel put his mind to ease by telling Zechariah to not be afraid. The angel called him by name and immediately said his prayer has been heard. His wife Elizabeth will give birth to a son and you are to name him John. John means “GOD is gracious.”

The angel identifies Himself as Gabriel in verse 19.

Let’s read Luke 1:14-23 to see the rest that the angel Gabriel had to tell Zechariah about his son John:

14 There will be joy and delight for you, and many will rejoice at his birth. 15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord and will never drink wine or beer.[8] Nm 6:3; Jdg 13:3–5; 16:17 He will be filled with the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb.[9] Lk 1:41,44; Isaiah 44:2 16 He will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children,[10] Mal 4:5–6 and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people. 18 “How can I know this?” Zechariah asked the angel. “For I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years.”[11] Lit in her days 19 The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and tell you this good news. 20 Now listen! You will become silent and unable to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.” 21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah, amazed that he stayed so long in the sanctuary. 22 When he did come out, he could not speak to them. Then they realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He kept making signs to them and remained speechless. 23 When the days of his ministry were completed, he went back home. 24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived and kept herself in seclusion for five months. She said, 25 “The Lord has done this for me. He has looked with favor in these days to take away my disgrace among the people.”

Let’s look at some of the highlights. Gabriel tells Zechariah that John will be filled with the HOLY SPIRIT while he is still in his mother’s womb. GOD is GOD and HE can do what HE chooses to do. HIS power is infinite. It will be a miracle for Zechariah and Elizabeth to conceive a child and for the fetus to be filled with the HOLY SPIRIT. Zechariah knew when Gabriel mentioned Elijah it meant the Messiah is coming and his son would proclaim HIM. But then Zechariah wanted to know how he could really know that this all was true. GOD does not like doubt. Gabriel identifies Himself and tells him if you want a sign GOD will give you a sign. You will not be able to speak until you know without a doubt that all that I have told you is true.

The people are concerned about Zechariah because he stayed so long in the sanctuary. When he comes out of the Holy of Holies, the people realize he has had an encounter. Zechariah completes his duties and goes home. Elizabeth conceives a child. She remains in seclusion for five (5) months. She rejoices in the LORD because HE has blessed her with a child. Her shame of how others look upon her has been removed. In essence she has been vindicated because it is obvious GOD has performed a miracle. She can no longer be thought of as hiding some secret sin. Zechariah, Elizabeth and others had to recall how Abraham and Sarah conceived Isaac at the ripe old age of ninety (90) years old. Had GOD considered the faithfulness of Zechariah and Elizabeth similar to that of Abraham and Sarah? The promise GOD made to Abraham and Sarah was confirmed with the birth of Isaac. It also marked the beginning of the old covenant which was instituted as a show of faith until the Messiah came to earth. GOD was fulfilling the old covenant through the Messiah, WHO would usher in the new covenant of salvation through grace. John the Baptist would herald the coming of the Messiah and be considered as the final prophet to announce the Messiah.

Now we fast forward to the birth of the promised child.

Let’s read Luke 1:57-66:

57 Now the time had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she had a son. 58 Then her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her His great mercy,[26] Lit the Lord magnified His mercy with her and they rejoiced with her. 59 When they came to circumcise the child on the eighth day, they were going to name him Zechariah, after his father. 60 But his mother responded, “No! He will be called John.” 61 Then they said to her, “None of your relatives has that name.” 62 So they motioned to his father to find out what he wanted him to be called. 63 He asked for a writing tablet and wrote: HIS NAME IS JOHN And they were all amazed. 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue [set free]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. , and he began to speak, praising God. 65 Fear came on all those who lived around them, and all these things were being talked about throughout the hill country of Judea. 66 All who heard about [him]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. took [it]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. to heart, saying, “What then will this child become?” For, indeed, the Lord’s hand was with him.

The birth of John was an exciting event. All friends and relatives of Zechariah and Elizabeth rejoiced with them. The naming of the child, when he was circumcised, was an important occasion. All but Zechariah and Elizabeth wanted to name the baby Zechariah. When Elizabeth said she wanted him named John, all but Zechariah questioned her. Hoping to override Elizabeth’s decision they appealed to Zechariah. When Zechariah confirmed the name of John, he began to speak; it confirmed that John was a very special boy. GOD had HIS hand upon HIM.

Let’s read Luke 1:76-79:
Zechariah’s Prophecy
67 Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: 68 Praise the Lord, the God of Israel,[27] Ps 41:13 because He has visited and provided redemption for His people. 69 He has raised up a • horn[28] 1 Sm 2:1,10; 2 Sm 22:3; Dn 7—8; Zch 1:18–21 of salvation[29] A strong Savior for us in the house of His servant David, 70 just as He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets in ancient times; 71 salvation from our enemies and from the clutches[30] Lit the hand of those who hate us. 72 He has dealt mercifully with our fathers and remembered His holy covenant— 73 the oath that He swore to our father Abraham. He has given us the privilege, 74 since we have been rescued from our enemies’ clutches,[31] Lit from the hand of enemies to serve Him without fear 75 in holiness and righteousness in His presence all our days. 76 And child, you will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare His ways,[32] Mal 3:1 77 to give His people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins. 78 Because of our God’s merciful compassion, the Dawn[33] Jr 23:5; Zch 3:8; 6:12 LXX from on high[34] Lk 24:49; Isaiah 58:8; Eph 4:8 will visit us 79 to shine on those who live in darkness and the shadow of death,[35] Isaiah 9:2; 60:2–3 to guide our feet into the way of peace. 80 The child grew up and became spiritually strong, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

These verses outline the role John the Baptist would play to prepare the way or herald the coming of the Messiah. Zechariah was filled with the HOLY SPIRIT and spoke. Some think He might have been holding John in his arms as he spoke these words. He had time to ponder his encounter with Gabriel while he was in the Holy of Holies and he also knew the scriptures which prophesied the coming of the Messiah.

Zechariah speaks about the “Horn of salvation.” King David speaks of the horn of salvation in 2 Samuel 22:1-3:

1 David spoke the words of this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. 2 He said:[1] Ps 18:2–50 The Lord is my rock, my fortress,[2] Ps 31:3; 71:3 and my deliverer, 3 my God, my mountain[3] LXX; MT reads God of my mountain; Ps 18:2 where I seek refuge. My shield, the • horn of my salvation, my stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior, You save me from violence.

King David speaks of deliverance from his enemies. All mankind is faced with an enemy it cannot defeat which is death as the result of sin. Only GOD can deliver mankind from that enemy.

King David also speaks of the horn in Psalms 18:2:

2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my mountain where I seek refuge, my shield and the • horn of my salvation,[2] 1 Sm 2:1,10; Lk 1:69 my stronghold.

The altar in the temple had four (4) projections called horns on which the blood of the sacrificed animals was sprinkled. A guilty person, whose offense had been discovered could go to the temple and hold onto the horn of the altar in hopes of finding mercy and forgiveness.

All mankind is guilty of sin and we seek forgiveness. GOD is sending HIS ONLY SON WHO will shed HIS blood so that all who believe will be forgiven of their sins and escape death.

Zechariah goes back to Abraham and the promise GOD made to him. John the Baptist is called the prophet of the Most High (GOD). JESUS is the Son of the Most High.

John the Baptist will announce the way to salvation through the promised Messiah. The old covenant will be replaced with the new covenant of salvation through the shed blood of the Messiah.

Verses 78 and 79 are awesome. They depict the Messiah, JESUS, as rescuing a person that has been traveling and night is coming upon them. Their road is very treacherous and pending disaster is every where. Light is critical. The darkest part of the night overcomes them and they are facing sure death and they need to continue their journey but at the last possible moment before certain doom a light appears that saves them from certain death. This is JESUS coming to earth when mankind is facing the darkest moment of their existence. Mankind is perishing but GOD has allowed HIS SON, the Messiah, JESUS to come to earth. HE brings the light to the lost and perishing at the last possible moment. HE is the only way to the FATHER. HE is the truth and the light.

John the Baptist grew until GOD called him to sound the alarm for the Messiah.
