Bible Study - Temptation (3) - The Temptation to Test GOD - Matt 4/Deut. 6 - April 30, 2023

Bible Study – Temptation (3) – The Temptation to Test GOD – April 30, 2023

This is lesson three (3) in our series entitled “Dealing with Temptation.”

Our focus scripture is Matthew 4:5-7 and Deuteronomy 6:16-25.

All humans will face temptation during their life upon earth. This includes Spirit-born Christians.

1 Corinthians 10:13:

13 No temptation has come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful; he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to bear it.

When a person is conceived, he/she has been fashioned by GOD in his/her mother’s womb according to HIS purpose. A person’s DNA brings in good attributes and some not so good attributes. All humans have ancestral baggage.

JESUS had ancestral baggage scripture reveals in Hebrews 4:15:

15 For we do not have a high priest (JESUS) who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin.

As we read in our selected scripture, we see that JESUS was not exempt from being tempted to take a short cut for Himself. Let’s explore!

Matthew 4:5-7:

Then the devil took him to the holy city, had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written:

He will give his angels orders concerning you,
and they will support you with their hands
so that you will not strike
your foot against a stone.[
b]

Jesus told him, “It is also written: Do not test the Lord your God.[c]

JESUS knew that Satan was a liar and the Father of lies as recorded in John 8:44: You are of your father the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.

Notice that Satan quotes scripture to JESUS. There are many reasons why Spirit-born people must know scripture. The main reason is for them to know truth to use in battles that Satan brings their way. We can use scripture for offense and defense.

JESUS did not take the easy way out. JESUS remained true to HIS calling and HIS purpose for all mankind. Only JESUS living a perfect, sinless life could pay, in full, for all sin by the shedding of HIS blood for the sins of all mankind for eternity.

We skip to the Old Testament:

Deuteronomy 6:16-19:

16 Do not test the Lord your God as you tested him at Massah. 17 Carefully observe the commands of the Lord your God, the decrees and statutes he has commanded you. 18 Do what is right and good in the Lord’s sight, so that you may prosper and so that you may enter and possess the good land the Lord your God swore to give your ancestors, 19 by driving out all your enemies before you, as the Lord has said.

Another reason to study and know scripture is to avoid pitfalls along life’s journey. The Holy Spirit reminded Moses of what Moses himself had experienced in the wilderness. GOD equips us but with certain instructions.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 is known as the Shema or simply to listen.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9:

Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a] Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol[b] on your forehead.[c] Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your city gates.

Remembering God through Obedience

10 “When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that he would give you—a land with large and beautiful cities that you did not build, 11 houses full of every good thing that you did not fill them with, cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant—and when you eat and are satisfied, 12 be careful not to forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery. 13 Fear the Lord your God, worship him, and take your oaths in his name. 14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you, 15 for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a jealous God. Otherwise, the Lord your God will become angry with you and obliterate you from the face of the earth. (Ancestral, real or imagined)

What did Moses do at Massah? Let’s go back and review GOD calling Moses to go to Egypt and be GOD’S spokesperson to the Egyptian King for the release of the Israelites. Moses questioned GOD’S reasoning for choosing him for such an awesome responsibility. We read in Exodus 4:1 Moses answered, “What if they won’t believe me and will not obey me but say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you’?”

The Lord asked him (Moses), “What is that in your hand?”

“A staff,” he replied.

“Throw it on the ground,” he said. So, Moses threw it on the ground, it became a snake, and he ran from it. The Lord told Moses, “Stretch out your hand and grab it by the tail.” So, he stretched out his hand and caught it, and it became a staff in his hand. “This will take place,” he continued, “so that they (Israelites) will believe that the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.”

Moses staff became a symbol of the presence and power of the one true GOD of the Israelites, “I AM” or Yahweh.

GOD instructed Moses on when to use the staff and when to not. GOD instructed Moses to use the staff a number of times but our focus is on the time the Israelites could not find water in the Wilderness twice.

We read in Exodus 17:1-7: (The First Time)

17 The entire Israelite community left the Wilderness of Sin, moving from one place to the next according to the Lord’s command. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. (The water was bitter)  So the people complained to Moses, “Give us water to drink.”

“Why are you complaining to me?” Moses replied to them. “Why are you testing the Lord?”

But the people thirsted there for water and grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you ever bring us up from Egypt to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”

There are times when GOD leads us into dry places where we cry out to GOD. It is always a teaching opportunity. It all depends how we respond to it.

Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What should I do with these people? In a little while they will stone me!”

When GOD’S Chosen experience the dry places, who do they turn to in a crisis? Where or to whom do we turn to when we experience the dry times in our lives is a reflection of our spiritual growth.

In this case Moses turned to the LORD!

The Lord answered Moses, “Go on ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take the staff you struck the Nile with in your hand and go. I am going to stand there in front of you on the rock at Horeb; when you hit the rock, water will come out of it and the people will drink.” Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. He named the place Massah[a] and Meribah[b] because the Israelites complained, and because they tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Such an issue presented itself a second time when the Israelites were wandering in the Wilderness of Zin. The Israelites and their cattle were thirsty and they complained to Moses and Aaron.

Notice that Moses and Aaron go into the tent of meeting to inquire how GOD wanted them to handle this water crisis.

Numbers 20:6-13: Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the doorway of the tent of meeting. They fell facedown, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them. The Lord spoke to Moses, “Take the staff and assemble the community. You and your brother Aaron are to speak to the rock while they watch, and it will yield its water. You will bring out water for them from the rock and provide drink for the community and their livestock.”

So Moses took the staff from the Lord’s presence just as he had commanded him. 10 Moses and Aaron summoned the assembly in front of the rock, and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels! Must we bring water out of this rock for you?” 11 Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff, so that abundant water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.

12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust me to demonstrate my holiness in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this assembly into the land I have given them.” 13 These are the Waters of Meribah,[b] where the Israelites quarreled with the Lord, and he demonstrated his holiness to them.

Why on earth did Moses strike the rock rather than following GOD’S instructions and “speak to the rock?” Simply “Moses did not trust GOD to demonstrate HIS holiness in sight of the Israelites.” Was it ego? Often, we stick with what we know works rather than reaching beyond our comfort zone. I believe GOD wanted to show Moses and the Israelites that HIS power was in the spoken word and not in a stick. Only Moses had a stick but all who place their faith in GOD have a voice.

What did JESUS tell HIS disciples in Matthew 17:20 - 20 “Because of your little faith,” he[a] told them. “For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of [b] a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”[c]

GOD desires complete obedience to HIS instructions. Water came from the rock but Moses had to suffer the consequence. He could not enter into the Promised Land but GOD did allow him to see it from atop a mountain.

Deuteronomy 6:20-25:

20 “When your son asks you in the future, ‘What is the meaning of the decrees, statutes, and ordinances that the Lord our God has commanded you?’ 21 tell him, ‘We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand. 22 Before our eyes the Lord inflicted great and devastating signs and wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on all his household, 23 but he brought us from there in order to lead us in and give us the land that he swore to our ancestors. 24 The Lord commanded us to follow all these statutes and to fear the Lord our God for our prosperity always and for our preservation, as it is today. 25 Righteousness will be ours if we are careful to follow every one of these commands before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us.’

How can we measure up to verse 25? We can ask JESUS to forgive us for our sins, ask HIM to come into our lives, believing that JESUS is GOD’S acceptable atonement for all sin. Quicker than the twinkle of the eye, that person is Spiritually born into GOD’S Family, never to be unborn.

Let’s read 2 Corinthians 5:25:

20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us. We plead on Christ’s behalf, “Be reconciled to God.” 21 He (GOD) made the one who did not know sin (JESUS) to be sin[e] for us, so that in him (JESUS) we might become the righteousness of God.

When a person places faith in JESUS, that person is made righteous before GOD and as a result can approach GOD 24/7 with his/her requests. The Spirit-born person becomes an Ambassador for CHRIST and represents GOD’S Kingdom upon earth.

Yes, the Spirit born person will find himself or herself in the wilderness and be thirsty for the living water that only JESUS provides. That is when we go to our FATHER and make our requests known to HIM. HE will give all who seek HIM the living water provided by the Holy Spirit.

Life is a journey and GOD’S desire is that we build the right relationship with HIM through faith in JESUS. GOD’S desire is for HIS Children to trust HIM in all circumstances and HE will test us. Why? Because HE loves us.

Blessings!!!

Bible Study- Temptation (2) - The Temptation to Rely Upon Myself Instead of GOD - April 23, 2023

Bible Study – Temptation (2) – The Temptation to Rely Upon Myself Instead of GOD. April 23, 2023

[Sorry, but just got home from hip replacement today. But wanted to get out some thoughts on our lesson for April 23, 2023]

This is lesson two (2) in our series entitled “Dealing with Temptation.”

Our focus scripture is Deuteronomy 8:2-10, Matthew 4:1-4.

GOD’S provision is always better than what we try to get for ourselves.

Let’s read Deuteronomy 8:2-5:

Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.

As we journey with GOD, the try word is to reflect back and remember!

GOD had chosen the Israelites to be HIS people and they had agreed to be HIS people. Often, we make a commitment to GOD and as we journey with HIM or relationship grows stale.

What is GOD’S remedy? Simply reflect back and remember what GOD has done for us over time. Remember!

In the parable JESUS told regarding the prodigal son. The father gave the son the freedom to leave, with provisions. The son spent all he had on wild living and his funds ran out. The son had to slop hogs which bought to the sons mind a memory that his father’s servants were living a far better life than he was living. The son made a decision to return home and become as a hired servant for his father. Remembering brought back healthy memories.

Leaving was a test.  It was also a way to get the son remember that GOD cares for HIS own.

When we are in the weeds of life pause, think and reflect.

Where have you been?

Where are you going?

Seek GOD WHO Will guide your path.

Let’s read Deuteronomy 8:6-10:

Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him. For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.

10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.

When a person takes the hand of GOD through faith in JESUS. He/she is to walk/keep the commands of GOD trusting that HE is leading you into the Promised Land.

Even in the Promised Land a person was to work and honor G

JESUS willingly gave HIS Sinless life for the sins of all people. Even JESUS was tempted to disobey GOD.

Let’s read Matthew 4:1-4:

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. Then the tempter approached him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

JESUS was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness for the express purpose of being tempted.

Notice, that the “tempter” or Satan was doing the tempting. First, JESUS fasted for forty days. JESUS was hungry. Satan always appeals to our physical needs. So, Satan offers JESUS physical food.

He answered, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.[a]

When we are tempted, Satan temps us by appealing to our physical needs. When we take matters into our own hands rather than waiting upon, we are disobedient. Trust is huge when we walk with GOD. That is our LORD teaches and build trust in HIM.

Trust is greater than all as we walk with GOD.

Blessings!!!

Bible Study - Temptation (1) - The Source of Temptation - James 1:13-18 - April 16, 2023

Bible Study – Temptation (1) – The Source of Temptation – April 16, 2023

This is lesson one in our series entitled, “Dealing with Temptation.”

Our focus scripture is James 1:13-18.

We have no one to blame when we fall into sin.

What is sin? In Good News Club, we define sin as anything we think, say or do that makes GOD unhappy.

The world likes to define sin as, “Satan or the devil made me do it.”

The blame game began in the Garden of Eden with the foundational parents of all humans. We read in Genesis 3:8-14: (After they had eaten the forbidden fruit -)

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze,[b] and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. So the Lord God called out to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”

10 And he(Adam) said, “I heard you[c] in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.”

When a person sins the last person, he/she wants to encounter is GOD. But the truth is GOD should be the first to whom the person goes and confesses what he/she has done.

Whether we like it or not, every person will encounter GOD when he/she dies. There will be judgment day.

11 Then he (GOD) asked, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

Did someone else have to tell them or did they know it instantly? (Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves [b]coverings.)

GOD made man and woman with the freedom to choose. GOD did not want robots to love HIM but HE wanted HIS creation to willingly love, serve and obey HIM.

12 The man replied, “The woman you gave to be with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate.”

In essence, Adam was saying to GOD, it is all YOUR fault. YOU made that woman and she gave me the forbidden fruit and I ate it.

My, my that bad woman made Adam eat that forbidden fruit. This was the first transferal of guilt -

13 So the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?”

And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Second transferal of guilt.

14 So the Lord God said to the serpent:

The culprit was identified. It was Satan. But did Satan make them eat the forbidden fruit? NO! But he sure made it sound good if they did eat the forbidden fruit. Adam and Eve ignored the consequence if they disobeyed GOD. They wanted to be like GOD, knowing good from evil. Guess what? They got it but they and all mankind suffer the consequences.

All humans have freedom of choice and have a sin nature that can be redeemed by placing their faith in JESUS.

There are deeper causes for a person’s inclination toward sin and that comes from his/her ancestral baggage that is passed down. Often, a person must be delivered from ancestral sins that have been passed down.

Let’s take a quick look at the scripture we had in a previous study. The blind man from birth in this story was not the result of ancestral sin. There are issues that can be passed through the DNA and traits that can be passed along through our ancestral blood line or heredity.

John 9:35-41:

Spiritual Blindness

35 Jesus heard that they (Jewish religious leaders) had thrown the man out (The man was blind from birth, which was NOT the result of sin.), and when he (JESUS) found him, he asked, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”[d]

36 “Who is he, Sir, that I may believe in him?” he asked.

37 Jesus answered, “You have seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”

38 I believe, Lord!” he said, and he worshiped him.

39 Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, in order that those who do not see will see and those who do see will become blind.”

40 Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and asked him, “We aren’t blind too, are we?”

41 “If you were blind,” Jesus told them (the Pharisees), “you wouldn’t have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.

JESUS is the Spiritual light and eternal hope of all people in the world. HIS shed blood paid the penalty for sin, in full, but every person must place his/her faith in HIM to be redeemed from eternal death. The proof that a person can trust in CHRIST is that GOD raised HIM from the physically dead to eternally alive.

The Holy Spirit extends an invitation to every person to either accept or reject JESUS as his/her Savior.

GOD’S Word reveals to us in Romans 3:23 - 23 For all have sinned and fall short of the[a] glory of God;

All humans cannot measure up to GOD’S standard by their own effort. That is why all people need a Savior.

James is the half-brother of JESUS. Before the Passion of JESUS, all the brothers of JESUS did not believe in HIM as the Son of GOD. What made the difference? The crucifixion and resurrection of JESUS with confirmation by the indwelling Holy Spirit made the difference.

Sin in the Bible is defined as missing the mark or target. An archer takes sight at a target, let’s an arrow fly toward the target but misses. Sin is defined as missing the mark or GOD’S standard which is perfection.

A person attempts to abide by GOD’S law but fails. GOD knows that people will fail trying to keep the letter and the spirit of the Law in his/her power/strength.

Faith in JESUS results in a person being Spirit-born and living upon earth under GOD’S Grace, where he/she always measurers up to GOD’S requirement. The Spirit-born person is enlightened and taught by the indwelling Holy Spirit.

Spirit-born people still sin, so what are they to do when they sin? In 1 John 1:9, we read, “9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

As the Spirit-born person encounters life, he/she needs to ask the Holy Spirit to examine him/her to keep the Spirit-born person in step with GOD’S plan for his/her life. When a Spirit-born person confesses his/her sin what happens to it or them? They are covered by the shed blood of JESUS and blotted out. GOD’S Word reveals that in Micah 7: He (GOD) will again have compassion on us;
he will vanquish our iniquities.
You (GOD) will cast all our[
d] sins
into the depths of the sea. (And put up a no fishing sign as I heard stated by Ms. Corrie Ten Boom.)

The Micah scripture is in the Old Testament, which gave those under the Law hope. Notice the Prophet revealed that a person’s sin would be cast into the “depths of the sea.” The message from GOD through Micah was that confessed sin would be buried where a person cannot revisit them while he/she is upon earth. The forgiven person leaves them all behind when he/she exits earth in physical death.

What else has GOD done through a person’s faith in JESUS? Let’s read 2 Corinthians 5:20-21: 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us. We plead on Christ’s behalf, “Be reconciled to God.” 21 He (GOD) made the one who did not know sin (JESUS) to be sin[e] for usso that in him (JESUS) we might become the righteousness of God.

When a person is Spirit-born he/she is righteous before GOD! Now that is something to shout about!

As a Spirit-born person did you know that you are righteous and always in right-standing with GOD? You will face trials in your life.

Let’s read James 1:13:

13 No one undergoing a trial should say, “I am being tempted by God,” since God is not tempted by evil, and he himself doesn’t tempt anyone

When we struggle with the issues of life, we must not blame our struggle on GOD. HE does not work that way. So, what is taking place when a person is tempted? It is perfecting and strengthening.

Let’s read James 1:14-15:

14 But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire. 15 Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.

Satan enticed Eve by getting her to look and feel by touching the forbidden fruit. Satan’s goal is to do damage to you. Satan lures, just like when we fish, we use a nice juicy worm or a colorful lure to attract the fish and then snag it. Satan’s desire is to capture and enslave everyone he can because he hates GOD and anyone who loves GOD. Satan’s desire is to be GOD. Satan is a liar and the father of lies.

We must keep in mind that the Apostle Paul reveals to us in Ephesians 6: 10 Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens.

JESUS defeated Satan and won the victory but the battle for the souls of all humans’ rages on. Every human is in that battle. Satan will do all he can to entice those who have not accepted JESUS as their Savior from accepting JESUS as their Savior. Those who have accepted JESUS as their Savior, Satan will do all he can to prevent them from living the victorious life in JESUS. Christians are in constant battles but they need to keep in mind that JESUS has won all battles. Draw closer to JESUS and enjoy HIS canopy of protection. Ephesians 6 tells Christians how to suit up for battle by putting on the full armor of GOD.

What are some of the weapons Satan uses? More than space allows but one is found in 1 John 2 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s possessions—is not from the father, but is from the world. 17 And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does the will of God remains forever.

All Christians should stand proud because JESUS has won the victory. Satan was defeated at the cross of JESUS and the proof is the resurrection of JESUS.

Let’s read James 1:16-18:

16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 By his own choice, he gave us birth by the word of truth so that we would be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

Satan is a deceiver and a liar. One never gets the whole truth from him. That is why as Spirit-born Christian’s, we must keep our eyes focused upon JESUS, read and study GODS Word, pray and serve as directed by the indwelling Holy Spirit.

As we get closer to the second coming of JESUS, we know that things in the world will get worse and as we read in Mark 13:22 - 22 For false messiahs and false prophets will arise and will perform signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, the elect.

That tells us, who know the truth, to remain vigilant. We live in a mine field and we must walk circumspectly as written in Ephesians 5- 15 See then that you walk [a]circumspectly, not as fools but as wise,

How does a Spirit-born person walk circumspectly? He/she asks the Holy Spirit to lead and direct his/her steps. GOD knows where the mines are located, as we journey through life.

Be wise and place your faith in JESUS. Salvation is simply recognizing your need for salvation through JESUS and asking JESUS to forgive you for your sins and ask HIM to come into your heart. Then ask HIM to lead and direct your path through life, get in a Bible believing and teaching fellowship/church, to learn more about JESUS and GOD’S Word.

Blessings!!!
