Bible Study - Minor Prophets - Haggai: A Message of Hope - January 27, 2013

Bible Study – Minor Prophets – Haggai: A Message of Hope - January 27, 2013

This is our fourth and final lesson in our series entitled, “Minor Prophets: Major Messages.”

Our scripture is Haggai 1:1-23.

Our journey through the Minor Prophets has revealed GOD’S sovereign power. The people of Nineveh were wicked and GOD sent the Prophet Jonah to them about 150 years earlier and he preached GOD’S message of repentance. The people, including the king, repented and GOD spared them. But the people of Nineveh settled back into their old ways.  Nineveh was the capital of Assyria and the people became very powerful but brutal and extremely wicked. During the ministry of the Prophet Nahum, GOD gave him a clear message that Nineveh would be utterly destroyed. This happened in 612 B.C.

In our next study, GOD revealed, through the Prophet Habakkuk, HIS plan to allow the Babylonians to capture Judah and to carry the Jews into exile. It happened as GOD said and the Jews in Judah were captured and taken to Babylon and other countries. This was 586 B.C. I will skip last week’s study of Obadiah for the moment.

Through the Prophet Haggai (HAG igh) this week, we will study the return of a remnant of Jews to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple. Babylon was overthrown by Cyrus in 539 B.C. Cyrus issued a decree in 538 B.C. allowing the exiles (Jews) to return to Jerusalem to rebuild it and the temple. The temple construction began in 536 B.C. The work on the temple stopped in 530 B.C. because of a political change and hostility in the area of Jerusalem.  Haggai’s ministry and work on the temple resumed in 520 B.C. The temple was completed in 516 B.C.

In last week’s lesson, through the Prophet Obadiah, GOD revealed HIS wrath toward the Edomites because they did not come to the aid of their kindred in Judah when Jerusalem was being attacked. The Edomites watched and gloated as Jerusalem was being destroyed and as the Jews tried to escape, they rounded them up and handed them over to the enemy. As a result, GOD allowed the Edomites and their territory to be destroyed. GOD’S message carries forward to the family of GOD today. Christians have the same Spiritual Father and are the children of GOD through CHRIST and as such are to respond to each other in times of need. I know some scam artist claim to be Christian in order to take advantage of the Christian community. Christians need to pray for discernment.

Back to our study of Haggai – As with the other prophets we have studied, we do not know much about the Prophet Haggai. He was one of the last prophets of the Old Testament. Haggai along with Zechariah and Malachi were known as the prophets of restoration. The earlier prophets were prophets of destruction. But we learned through them of GOD’S hatred for sin but HIS love for the sinner. GOD means what HE says. If HE tells people to repent or else, HE is faithful to HIS word. The Israelites were defeated and carried captive to Babylon just as GOD had told the Prophet Habakkuk. GOD also told Habakkuk that the defeat, capture and exile of the Israelites would bring them back to HIM. The fall of Jerusalem occurred in 586 B.C. The Persian King Cyrus defeated the Babylonians and some of the exiled Jews began returning to Jerusalem in 538 B.C.

In 536 B.C., the Persian emperor Cyrus issued a decree allowing the Jewish exiles to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple. In fact, he allowed them to take back some of the items that had been taken from the temple when it was destroyed.

GOD called a remnant of about 50,000 (42,360 plus 7,337 servants and 200 singers) Jews to go back to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple. The key is that GOD called this remnant to return to Jerusalem. This chosen remnant had the right desire, the right motives, the right heart and the will to do a very difficult job. They settled in and around Jerusalem and began the task of rebuilding the temple. They cleared the temple of the rubble and replaced the altar for burnt offerings back on its foundation, which made it possible for daily sacrifices.

The work began in the fall of 536 B.C. and by spring of 535 B.C. they had laid the foundations for the temple. Neighboring tribes became hostile toward them, especially the Samaritans who the Jews had declined their help. On top of that, Cyrus died in battle and Cambyses (Ahasuerus) was his successor. Cambyses was pushed to stop the work on the temple. The remnant in Jerusalem stopped work on the temple and focused on their private lives and providing for themselves. They got used to worshipping in the unfinished temple. Their desire to complete the temple faded. Fifteen (15) years passed and GOD sent the Prophet Haggai to challenge the people to complete what HE had called them to do.

They originally had the desire to restore Jerusalem and the temple but they had gotten off track. They needed to be Spiritually restored. The leaders and the people listened to GOD’S message through Haggai and started rebuilding the temple. Their calling from GOD was rekindled and work began once again.

This is often typical of those called of GOD to service because for many reasons Christians can get sidetracked. The call is still there. Is GOD calling you to finish the work that HE called you too many years ago? Only, you can answer that question. The point being that the work which HE called you too may be unfinished. Only the indwelling Holy Spirit can rekindle the desire for you to complete the work you were called to. The Prophet Haggai established the time when he was led by GOD to approach the governor of Judah and the high priest of Judah, as we read our opening scripture.

First let’s take a look at the dates. The calendar then was not as defined as it is today. The calendar year began with March as the first month of the year. In verse 1, Haggai stated these events began in the second year of King Darius, which would be 520 B.C. The sixth month would be August and the first day of the month was determined by the New Moon, therefore, the date for Haggai’s first message from GOD was August 29, 520 B.C. The New Moon was key in determining the next month during this period of time.

Let’s read Haggai 1:1-11:

Chapter 1- Command to Rebuild the Temple

1 In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel (zuh RUHB uh buhl) son of Shealtiel (shih AL tih el), the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak (jih HAHZ uh dak), the high priest: 2 “The Lord of •Hosts says this: These people say: The time has not come for the house of the Lord to be rebuilt.” 3 The word of the Lord came through Haggai the prophet: 4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?” 5 Now, the Lord of Hosts says this: “Think carefully about your ways: 6 You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough to be satisfied. You drink but never have enough to become drunk. You put on clothes but never have enough to get warm. The wage earner puts his wages into a bag with a hole in it.” 7 The Lord of Hosts says this: “Think carefully about your ways. 8 Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house. Then I will be pleased with it and be glorified,” says the Lord. 9 “You expected much, but then it amounted to little. When you brought the harvest to your house, I ruined it. Why?” This is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts. “Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house. 10 So on your account, the skies have withheld the dew and the land its crops. 11 I have summoned a drought on the fields and the hills, on the grain, new wine, olive oil, and whatever the ground yields, on man and beast, and on all that your hands produce.”

Bible scholars believe that Darius assumed the throne in 522 B.C. Two (2) years later would be the first day of the sixth month 520 B.C. or August 29, 520 B.C. Notice that GOD sent Haggai to the leaders – the governor and the high priest - of this remnant group commissioned by GOD to rebuild the temple. The leaders must be on board of any work that GOD calls HIS people to. The people and their leaders had become complacent and settled into their lifestyle of caring for their needs. They had come to the conclusion that it was not the right time to restart the rebuilding of the temple. But GOD had a different message to them through Haggai. It is time to begin again and go to the hills and bring down lumber to rebuild the temple.

GOD urged the people to look around them and reflect on their lifestyle in verses 5-9. The people had finished their houses and had brought the fruits of their labor to their house. They did not bring the fruits of their labor to HIS house because HIS house remained unfinished. They had not focused upon GOD Who provides. Even though they had food and things, they were not satisfied and what they had did not last or keep them warm. They worked hard and got gain but it just did not go very far. Something was wrong but they had not figured it out. GOD was giving them a wakeup call. Had the leaders and the people taken the time to do a Spiritual inventory? GOD challenged them in verse 5 and 7 to Think carefully about your ways!!!”

“Think carefully about your ways” is a message to all people today. It is good to stop and reflect on where we are Spiritually. Are we secure in CHRIST and obediently following HIM? Have we neglected or rejected HIM? Have we been called by GOD but have taken a leave of absence from what HE has called us to do? Are we just going through the motions of being a Christian? Have we become complacent? Are we struggling to make ends meet because we have left GOD out of our lives? How can GOD help when we have a fixed amount of money coming in and more having to go out?

GOD has HIS own multiplication table. If we give because we want to get, we will fall flat on our face. When we give out of the right heart with the right attitude, GOD takes over. It is time for a revival in our lives. It is time for us to allow GOD, through the indwelling Holy Spirit, to rekindle our love for our LORD. It is time for us to obediently follow HIM as HE leads us and gives us HIS strength to finish what HE has called us to. HIS calling may be to finish raising the children HE has entrusted to us or simply living as CHRIST would have us to live as an example of HIS love and care. There are many ways Christians are rebuilding from the ruins. The key point is that GOD stands ready to help us and provide HIS guidance and strength to finish the calling.

Let’s read Haggai 1:12-15:

The People’s Response

12 Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the entire remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the Lord their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him. So the people •feared the Lord. 13 Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, delivered the Lord’s message to the people, “I am with you”—this is the Lord’s declaration. 14 The Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the spirit of the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. They began work on the house of •Yahweh of Hosts, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.,

A rededication to their calling from GOD began with the leadership and flowed to the people. All had recommitted themselves to their calling.  GOD told them not to be discouraged because HE would be with them. HE would stand with them in what HE had called them to do. They still had to do the work but only GOD could placed a song in their hearts as they worked to bring glory to HIM. Work restarted on the 24th day of the sixth month of 520 B.C., which would be the equivalent of September 21, 520 B.C.

Let’s read Haggai 2:1-9:

Chapter 2 Encouragement and Promise

1 On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the Lord came through Haggai the prophet: 2 “Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and to the remnant of the people: 3 Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Doesn’t it seem like nothing to you? 4 Even so, be strong, Zerubbabel”—this is the Lord’s declaration. “Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land”—this is the Lord’s declaration. “Work! For I am with you”—the declaration of the Lord of •Hosts. 5 “This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt, and My Spirit is present among you; don’t be afraid.” 6 For the Lord of Hosts says this: “Once more, in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. 7 I will shake all the nations so that the treasures of all the nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,” says the Lord of Hosts. 8 “The silver and gold belong to Me”—this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts. 9 “The final glory of this house will be greater than the first,” says the Lord of Hosts. “I will provide peace in this place”—this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.

On the 21st day of the seventh month, GOD had another message through Haggai. This date was equivalent to October 17, 520 B.C. because the New Moon occurred on September 27, 520 B.C. GOD wanted the leaders to locate those who had seen the temple in its original condition.

GOD wanted them to be realistic with what had to be done. Those who had seen the original temple knew what an awesome task was ahead of them. GOD’S message was it is awesome and beyond your ability but “Be Strong” because I will be with you.

GOD wanted them to know that their efforts to rebuild the temple would be accomplished because HE would stand with them and help them. In essence, HE was telling them to do their work and HE would do HIS work. The end result would bring glory to HIM. It was a time they must work and trust as they worked.

GOD reminded them of the covenant that HE made with the Israelites when HE delivered them out of Egypt. GOD does not renege on or forget HIS promises. HE is faithful and can be trusted to do what HE says HE will do. This was a message to HIS chosen people then and Christians now. GOD through CHRIST can be depended upon regardless of the circumstances which may surround them. GOD is our strength and provider. The temple would be completed and it was in 515 B.C. When Herod became king of Judah in 37 B.C., he decided to expand and renovate the temple under Zerubbabel’s tenure.

This temple was made using physical materials but GOD had in mind the ultimate temple that would house the Holy Spirit after the passion and resurrection of HIS only Son JESUS. Christians are the temple of the Holy Spirit. The question is, “Is our temple in ruins or is it in a state of rebuilding?” Just as GOD told the remnant then, HE will be with us when we choose to rebuild our relationship with HIM and it will be a temple which will glorify HIM. When we consider our lives we may conclude there is much work to be done but GOD says, “Be strong, because HE will be with us.” HE is the hope and strength of all Christians. HE is the hope of all who seek HIM for salvation.

Let’s read Haggai 2:10-17:

From Deprivation to Blessing

10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to Haggai the prophet: 11 “This is what the Lord of Hosts says: Ask the priests for a ruling. 12 If a man is carrying consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does it become holy?” The priests answered, “No.” 13 Then Haggai asked, “If someone defiled by contact with a corpse touches any of these, does it become defiled?”The priests answered, “It becomes defiled.” 14 Then Haggai replied, “So is this people, and so is this nation before Me”—this is the Lord’s declaration. “And so is every work of their hands; even what they offer there is defiled. 15 “Now, reflect back from this day: Before one stone was placed on another in the Lord’s temple, 16 what state were you in? When someone came to a grain heap of 20 measures, it only amounted to 10; when one came to the winepress to dip 50 measures from the vat, it only amounted to 20. 17 I struck you—all the work of your hands—with blight, mildew, and hail, but you didn’t turn to Me”—this is the Lord’s declaration.

On the 24th day of the ninth month, 520 B.C., would be equivalent to December 18, 520 B.C. because the New Moon occurred on November 25, 520 B.C. GOD told the people to recall where they were so they could establish a baseline to see how far GOD would carry them. They had tried life on their own but now they needed to see where GOD would lead them.

GOD asked two (2) important questions in verses 11-14. The questions focus on the transfer of holiness and defilement (sin). Holiness cannot be transferred but defilement (sin) could be transferred. It was time for the leaders, the priests and the people to consider their hearts toward GOD and HIS calling. Obedience was an individual matter and each person must examine his/her heart toward that which GOD had called him/her to. Rejecting GOD could infect others because sin can negatively influence others. Where is our heart toward GOD? How are we influencing others by our lifestyle or attitude?

Let’s read Haggai 2:18-19:

18 “Consider carefully from this day forward; from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day the foundation of the Lord’s temple was laid; consider it carefully. 19 Is there still seed left in the granary? The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet produced. But from this day on I will bless you.”

GOD told them to mark their calendars because the 24th day of the ninth month was the day of new beginnings. Again, that date was December 18, 520 B.C. Do you have a special hallmark day in your life? Our birthday is important and the day we accepted CHRIST as our Savior is certainly a day to remember or the day we were baptized. Just as important is the day that we rededicate our lives to our LORD JESUS, when we have gone astray. GOD tells us to mark those special days. Again, be careful, we must have the right motive. I know the day I committed my life to the LORD is etched in my mind. The exact date I do not know but that day is very clear.

Let’s read Haggai 2:20- 23: Promise to Zerubbabel

20 The word of the Lord came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month: 21 “Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah: I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. 22 I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power of the Gentile kingdoms. I will overturn chariots and their riders. Horses and their riders will fall, each by his brother’s sword. 23 On that day”—this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts—“I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, My servant”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“and make you like My signet ring, for I have chosen you.” This is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts

Again, on the 24th day of the month GOD had a message for Zerubbabel. Again, the date was December 18, 520 B.C. In essence, GOD was telling Zerubbabel to mark his calendar because HE was going to witness, HIS mighty handiwork. HE was going to shake the Gentile kingdoms and make Zerubbabel HIS signet ring. The signet ring was a symbol of authority. GOD would make Zerubbabel a symbol of HIS authority. Zerubbabel would rule with the divine blessings of GOD.

GOD is the ultimate ruler over all. Because HE is sovereign, only HE can shake the world such that it will favor those who HE chooses to bless. GOD refers to Zerubbabel as “MY servant.” In the book of Isaiah the term “MY servant” refers to the Messiah. GOD is awesome because Zerubbabel was a descendent of King David and we see in Matthew 1:13-16 we see that Zerubbabel was in the linage of JESUS CHRIST.

Our lesson has been on hope. JESUS CHRIST is the hope of the world. Faith in CHRIST is the only way to GOD. Is your hope in CHRIST? If not, ask HIM to forgive you for your sins and to come into your life now. Blessings!

Bible Study - Minor Prophets - Obadiah: A Message of God's Justice - Obadiah - January 20, 2013

Bible Study – Minor Prophets – Obadiah: A Message of God’s Justice – January 20, 2013

This is lesson three (3) in our series entitled “Minor Prophets: Major Messages.”

Our scripture is Obadiah 1-4, 10-15, 17-18, 21

We do not know much about the Prophet Obadiah. He was likely a prophet around 853 B.C. His writings are the shortest of the minor prophets. The theme of Obadiah is a denunciation of Edom but it is only the backdrop for future events which extend to the coming of our LORD JESUS CHRIST.

So what do we know about Edom? Edom predates Abraham. The Bible states that Esau, the brother of Jacob, lived in Edom. We know that Esau sold his birthright for a bowl of soup. We know that Jacob and Esau were twins. Esau was the oldest but GOD said that Esau would serve Jacob. They went their separate ways. Esau and his descendants settled south and became known as the Edomites. Jacob’s descendants settled north and developed into the Covenant people known as the nation of Israel. There were many clashes between these two groups which sprang from the same family. It was another Hatfield’s and McCoy’s.

Edom was located in a geographically strategic area, which was well protected. Petra was their capital city, which was originally named Sela.

It was located along the trade routes between Syria and Egypt and as such they charged tolls, which made them rich. Edom was situated in a secure area protected by cliffs that were more than 5,000 feet above sea level. In order to get to the city area one would have to travel about a mile through an entry that had short sharp turns. There was no straight entrance into the city (Petra, the capital of Edom). They had warriors posted on the walls to protect the city from an invader. As such the Edomites were physically and economically secure, which resulted in them having an arrogant, prideful attitude. The attitude of their hearts toward others, especially their descendents in Israel, gave GOD a problem.

GOD gave Obadiah a vision regarding Edom. GOD’S message not only applied to the Edomites but to all succeeding generations until JESUS returns to earth to establish GOD’S kingdom. This message is in effect until the end of time. It was an imminent message.

Let’s read Obadiah 1-4:

1 The vision of Obadiah. Edom’s Certain Judgment

This is what the Lord God has said about Edom: We have heard a message from the Lord; a messenger has been sent among the nations: “Rise up, and let us go to war against her.”

2 Look, I will make you (Edom) insignificant among the nations; you will be deeply despised. 3 Your presumptuous heart has deceived you, you who live in clefts of the rock in your home on the heights, who say to yourself, “Who can bring me down to the ground?” 4 Though you seem to soar like an eagle and make your nest among the stars, even from there I will bring you down.

GOD’S problem with the Edomites was their pride. There is nothing wrong with pride. All of us need to have pride but our pride can become arrogance and self-sufficiency. We can conclude that we do not need GOD in our lives. This was the situation with the Edomites. They were secure physically and economically, therefore, they did not depend upon anyone including their family descendents in Israel or GOD. GOD revealed the heart of the Edomites and the hearts of all who become self-sufficient. GOD made it clear that others may not be able to bring you down but HE can.

Let’s read Obadiah 5-9:

This is the Lord’s declaration.

5 If thieves came to you, if marauders by night—how ravaged you would be!—wouldn’t they steal only what they wanted? If grape pickers came to you, wouldn’t they leave some grapes? 6 How Esau will be pillaged, his hidden treasures searched out! 7 Everyone who has a treaty with you will drive you to the border; everyone at peace with you will deceive and conquer you. Those who eat your bread will set a trap for you. He will be unaware of it. 8 In that day—this is the Lord’s declaration—will I not eliminate the wise ones of Edom and those who understand from the hill country of Esau? 9 Teman, your warriors will be terrified so that everyone from the hill country of Esau will be destroyed by slaughter.

GOD knows how secure you think you are. You know that even if thieves and robbers did come into your cities they could only make off with a limited quantity of goods. If they took your grapes they would have to leave some grapes behind but when GOD comes in, nothing will remain. It will be devastating.

Verse 6 mentions Esau. Esau was the father of the descendents of the nation of Edom. GOD was not taking out vengeance on Edom but bringing about justice. The Edomites were getting what they deserved because they took advantage of others and did not come to the aid of their kindred in Jerusalem. They were onlookers and often helped do the looting when Jerusalem was under attack. They rejoiced in the plight of the Israelites. The Edomites thought they were secure but GOD would show them that HE is sovereign.

The Edomites were known for their wisdom (verse 8). They were wise in how to make money, secure their cities and have plenty to eat. They thought their wisdom was far superior to anyone else’s, including GOD. But they were foolish because they did not acknowledge GOD, which was a big mistake.

Verse 9 mentions Teman. Teman was the hometown of one of Job’s friend (Elipaz). It was about five (5) miles from Petra the capital of Edom. Teman was named after Esau’s grandson. (Genesis 36:11) This leads us to the reason GOD was bringing such destruction upon them in our next scripture.

Let’s read Obadiah 10-15:

Edom’s Sins against Judah

10 You will be covered with shame and destroyed forever because of violence done to your brother Jacob.

The Israelites descended from Jacob and the Edomites descended from Esau. Instead of helping Israel and Judah, the Edomites just stood by and watched. When Jerusalem was under attack, the Edomites gloated. Yet, it was part of their family that was being destroyed. This revealed their hearts. Do we gloat when bad things happen to others, especially family or friends?

11 On the day you stood aloof, on the day strangers captured his wealth, while foreigners entered his •gate and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were just like one of them.

GOD considered the inaction of the Edomites the same as if they had attacked and pillaged Jerusalem. GOD reminded them that they were accountable to HIM. GOD knew their hearts as our next scripture reveals.

12 Do not gloat over your brother in the day of his calamity; do not rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction; do not boastfully mock in the day of distress. 13 Do not enter the gate of My people in the day of their disaster. Yes, you—do not gloat over their misery in the day of their disaster and do not appropriate their possession sin the day of their disaster. 14 Do not stand at the crossroads to cut off their fugitives, and do not hand over their survivors in the day of distress.

The Edomites prevented those trying to escape by blocking their escape. They rounded-up those trying to escape and turned them over to the enemy. (Verse 14)

Surely, Christians would not do such a thing today, would they? What do we do when a brother or sister in CHRIST falls into sin? Do we stand by and watch as he/she is being ripped apart? Do we pray for them? Do we go to them and offer them support? I am not saying to endorse or approve of his/her sin. Our first reaction should be to pray for them because he/she is family and yes, go to them. But do not throw them under the bus. I know there are some grievous things Christians can do. Christians need discernment, wisdom and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Let’s read Obadiah 15-16:

Judgment of the Nations

15 For the Day of the Lord is near, against all the nations. As you have done, so it will be done to you; what you deserve will return on your own head. 16 As you have drunk on My holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and gulp down and be as though they had never been.

“The Day of the Lord is near, against all the nations.” This refers to judgment. It does not mean judgment may come. It means that judgment is imminent. It is not only the Day of Judgment for Edom but for all the nations. Judgment came to Edom and it was destroyed. But it does not end with Edom. GOD’S judgment extends to all nations. Yes, it even extends to today, even up to the final days when CHRIST will establish GOD’S Kingdom upon earth.

GOD told them that as they had done to others it would be done to them. GOD was telling them that they would reap what they had sown.

The Edomites, as well as other nations, rejoiced on HIS Holy mountain when HIS chosen people were being attacked. All who do not stand up for HIS chosen people will reap GOD’S wrath. GOD told them that this was not the end of GOD punishing those who harm HIS children. This includes all nations until the end of time. This covers all Christians, because they are HIS chosen.

Let’s read Obadiah 17-21:

17 But there will be a deliverance on Mount •Zion and it will be holy; the house of Jacob will dispossess those who dispossessed them. 18 Then the house of Jacob will be a blazing fire, and the house of Joseph, a burning flame, but the house of Esau will be stubble; Jacob will set them on fire and consume Edom. Therefore no survivor will remain of the house of Esau, for the Lord has spoken.

Could verse 17 prophesy the ultimate deliverance of mankind from all sin through the atoning death of JESUS CHRIST? CHRIST giving HIS life by shedding HIS blood paid in full the penalty for sin. All who reject CHRIST will fall under the wrath of GOD. GOD will be the judge. Those who have CHRIST will not be judged.

GOD made it clear that there will be reversal of fortune. Esau’s clan had been reaping the benefits but GOD would change that. Edom would be destroyed and Jacob’s side of the family, Israel, would prosper. This is still true today. Those who accept CHRIST as their Savior will receive the gift of eternal life, the miracle of the rebirth into GOD’S family and citizenship into heaven never to be lost. The resurrection of CHRIST is the proof that this is true. The indwelling Holy Spirit confirms our Son-ship or Daughter-ship.

Future Blessing for Israel

19 People from the •Negev will possess the hill country of Esau; those from the Judean foothills will possess the land of the Philistines. They will possess the territories of Ephraim and Samaria, while Benjamin will possess Gilead. 20 The exiles of the Israelites who are in Halah and who are among the Canaanites as far as Zarephath as well as the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the cities of the Negev. 21 Saviors (Deliverers) will ascend Mount Zion to rule over the hill country of Esau, but the kingdom will be the Lord’s.

The Israelites will move in and possess the hill country of Esau (Edom).

Verse 21 is prophesy revealing that GOD is supreme over all people and nations.

GOD does not tolerate arrogance and ignoring those in need, especially brothers and sisters in CHRIST. This includes Israel.

This study opens us up to the working of GOD’S mind, as HE deals with various nations/countries. It gives us a clear example of GOD’S expectations. In this study, we have learned that GOD’S desire is for HIS children to reach out and help our Spiritual family when they are in need. We are not to gloat or stand idly by watching the misfortunes of others. Here we have to be careful. This is where we need discernment and the leadership and confirmation of the Holy Spirit. We must be careful not to become an enabler. Blessings!

Bible Study - Minor Prophets - Habakkuk: A Message of Faith - Habakkuk 1, 2 and 3 - January 13, 2013

Bible Study – Minor Prophets – Habakkuk: A Message of Faith – January 13, 2012

This is the second lesson in our series entitled “Minor Prophets: Major Messages.”

Our scripture is Habakkuk 1:1-3, 5-6, 13; 2:1, 4-6; 3:2, 17-19b.

To me the study of Habakkuk has been an exciting study. I have always asked GOD questions and HE responds. I am not placing myself in the league with Habakkuk or any other prophets, I just happen to believe that GOD likes sincere questions from anyone who will be open to receiving HIS response. I have had people to tell me, “If GOD spoke to me, I would run or that it would scare me to death.” GOD’S desire is for us to know HIM and have an intimate one on one relationship with HIM.

The Prophet Habakkuk asked GOD some tough questions and GOD gave him answers. Habakkuk’s interaction with GOD resulted in him developing a deep, awe inspiring relationship with HIM.

This is an oracle that Habakkuk received from GOD. As you recall, an oracle is a vision/message from GOD.

We do not know much about the prophet Habakkuk.  We know that he wrote sometime after the fall of Nineveh in 612 B.C. To me Habakkuk’s journey to truth, as revealed by GOD, seems to be the hub from which faith is radiated. Paul was influenced by Habakkuk’s discovery of truth, as well as, many others since. Habakkuk has been called the “puzzled” prophet. He was bold enough to ask GOD the “why” questions and receive a response. He was a prophet that believed in justice. He believed that GOD would be the One to administer that justice. He was puzzled why GOD did not take action against the obvious wrongdoers. What GOD revealed to him and to us through his record, is astounding.

Habakkuk had posed a question to GOD about implementing justice to wrongdoers. Habakkuk had waited on GOD’S reply but GOD had not given him an answer. In our first scripture, Habakkuk asked GOD the first question.

Let’s read Habakkuk 1:1-4, 12-13 and 2:1:

1 The •oracle that Habakkuk the prophet saw.

Habakkuk’s First Prayer

2 How long, Lord, must I call for help and You do not listen or cry out to You about violence and You do not save? 3 Why do You force me to look at injustice? Why do You tolerate wrongdoing? Oppression and violence are right in front of me. Strife is ongoing, and conflict escalates.

4 This is why the law is ineffective and justice never emerges. For the wicked restrict the righteous; therefore, justice comes out perverted.

Habakkuk believed in justice to wrongdoers and he looked to GOD to implement that justice. Habakkuk was not seeing any action from GOD. Yet, he knew GOD knew what was going on in the world. Have you ever felt like that? GOD seemed to be just ignoring all the evil and bad things that were happening to good people? Well, that was how Habakkuk felt and he approached GOD. He was having an honest, frank discussion with GOD about HIS inaction. HE was the cause of the law being ineffective.

Habakkuk stressed that this wrongdoing was getting worse and he was puzzled why GOD does not put a stop to it. This was a very good question and many ask that same question today.

Let’s read Habakkuk 1:5-11: (GOD’S First Answer to Habakkuk.)

5 Look at the nations h DSS, LXX, Syr read Look, you treacherous peoplei Ps 2:1 and observe j Gn 15:5—be utterly astounded! k  Gn 43:33; Ps 48:5; Ecc 5:8For something is taking place in your days that you will not believel  Gn 15:6when you hear about it.m Ac 13:41
6 Look! I am raising upn
Ru 4:5 the Chaldeans,o   = the Babyloniansthat bitter, p Jdg 18:25 impetuous nation that marches across the earth’s open spaces to seize territories not its own.

7 They are fierce and terrifying; their views of justice and sovereignty stem from themselves. 8 Their horses are swifter than leopards and more fierce than wolves of the night. Their horsemen charge ahead; their horsemen come from distant lands. They fly like an eagle, swooping to devour. 9 All of them come to do violence; their faces are set in determination. They gather prisoners like sand. 10 They mock kings, and rulers are a joke to them. They laugh at every fortress and build siege ramps to capture it. 11 Then they sweep by like the wind and pass through. They are •guilty; their strength is their god.

GOD responded to Habakkuk. HE told him to look around and observe. GOD wanted Habakkuk to establish a baseline as he observed what was going on in the world around him. GOD was preparing for him to witness some astounding, unbelievable things which were going to take place during his lifetime. It was going to blow Habakkuk’s mind when HE revealed HIS plan and purpose to him. GOD would reveal how HE works. HE was raising up the terrible, cruel, vicious Chaldeans to march across the land and take control of it. But we must keep in mind that GOD was in control of those wicked Chaldeans.

GOD was speaking about the Neo-Babylonians. The Chaldeans were one of the Aramean tribes in southern Babylonia. Nabopolassar and Nebuchadnezzar were Chaldean leaders. When they rose to power, they established the Neo-Babylonian Empire in 625 B.C.

Verses 7-11 reveal how bad the Chaldeans were.

GOD revealed that HE was going to use those bitter, impetuous Chaldeans (Neo-Babylonians) to do HIS work. It was hard for Habakkuk to understand why GOD would allow those terrible, wicked barbarians to conquer and capture the not as wicked Jews in Judah. GOD revealed an astonishing revelation to Habakkuk and to all from that time forward. GOD raised up the Chaldeans to punish Judah. GOD was not endorsing evil but HE was using them to get HIS people to repent and be willing to restore their relationship with HIM and to acknowledge GOD in their lives. When that had been accomplished, GOD would not let the Chaldeans (Neo-Babylonians) go unpunished. GOD would deal with them.

While the difficult things were happening to those in Judah, the righteous must live by faith. GOD is in control of history.

This was GOD’S plan. HE would allow the despicable barbarians to capture the land and people of Judah. Even though the people of Judah were, in general, better than the barbarians, HE would allow this to happen for the good that would come from it for HIS chosen people.

My wife and I were discussing this and this train of thought came to our minds. Why would GOD use the un-Godly to punish the Godly? Why would GOD allow ungodly people rule over Godly people? He allows such to bring about good for the Godly people. During such a hostile time, the Godly must live by faith because it is the will of GOD to develop them and to help them grow and mature Spiritually. Do you think that GOD could allow such to happen to America? You bet!

First, GOD knows the hearts of all people. The un-Godly are dead to Spiritual matters and using them will not make them less likely to seek HIM. However, those who have acknowledged GOD in their lives, but have gone astray, have the opportunity to come back to GOD if certain circumstances take place. GOD knows what will bring HIS people back to HIM. Often in tragedy/oppression/difficult circumstances some people turn to GOD and take refuge in HIM and find strength. GOD, from HIS vantage point and comprehensive knowledge, knew the hard hearts of the barbarians. HE would use them to conquer, capture and oppress HIS people. During those difficult times the oppressed would look to HIM and return to HIM. HE would restore HIS relationship with those who returned to HIM. As HIS chosen returned to HIM, the barbarians would see GOD’S favor and acceptance of them. This would be a witness to those wicked people and give them the opportunity to see that the GOD of the Israelites was the true GOD for them to worship.

The bottom line is that GOD is sovereign and GOD answered Habakkuk’s questions, which opened his Spiritual eyes to the mind of GOD. HIS ways are not our ways and HIS thoughts are higher than our thoughts. But there is more. Let’s keep following Habakkuk’s Spiritual journey as he asks questions.

Let’s read Habakkuk 1:12-13: (Habakkuk’s Second Prayer and second set of questions/complaints.)

12 Are You not from eternity, •Yahweh my God? My Holy One, You will not die. Lord, You appointed them to execute judgment; my Rock, You destined them to punish us.

Habakkuk acknowledged that Yahweh was eternal and HE had observed this wrongdoing longer than he had. Rather than HIM dealing directly with the wrongdoers in Judah, HE was going to allow the wrongdoers to execute judgment over good people. Habakkuk had witnessed GOD bringing a revival into the hearts and lives of HIS people which turned them back to HIM, so why didn’t GOD do that again? Habakkuk acknowledged GOD as his rock upon which he could build his faith. He understood that GOD had known from the beginning that these wrongdoers would need to be punished. HE did not prevent it. So there must be a reason “why” because Habakkuk knew that GOD is pure. This leads into verse 13 and two questions.

13 Your eyes are too pure to look on evil, and You cannot tolerate wrongdoing. So why do You tolerate those who are treacherous? Why are You silent while one who is wicked swallows up one who is more righteous than himself?

This is the heart of Habakkuk’s “why” questions. Habakkuk acknowledged that GOD was righteous, pure and the rock upon which people can build their trust and faith. He knew that GOD cannot look upon evil or tolerate wrongdoing. Habakkuk was perplexed. Habakkuk’s questions to GOD were, “So why do You tolerate those who are treacherous? Why are You silent while one who is wicked swallows up one who is more righteous than himself?” These are good questions to ask GOD then and today.

Habakkuk has proposed the questions to GOD, now what? Out next scripture reveals what he planned to do. Simply, Habakkuk had done all he could do, therefore, he planned to release his concerns to GOD, to watch and wait for GOD to reply. That is exactly what GOD wants HIS children to do. We are to go as far as we can and then when we have gone as far as we can, HE wants us to give it to HIM. This becomes part of the learning and interactive process of building the right relationship with GOD. So Habakkuk decided to wait upon GOD.

Let’s read Habakkuk 2:1 - Habakkuk Waits for God’s Response

1 I will stand at my guard post and station myself on the lookout tower. I will watch to see what He will say to me and what I should reply about my complaint.

A watchtower was built to be higher than the things that surrounded it. It was a vantage point. A person could build a watchtower to keep watch over crops such as a vineyard or to keep an eye out for friend or foe approaching a walled city or area. A watchtower was built with intention of keeping a watchful eye for whatever would come along, good or bad. The person in the watchtower was helpless to know who or what would be coming along but the person in the watchtower would be actively watching and waiting. Habakkuk had done all he could do to understand GOD. He reconciled within himself to give his concerns and questions to GOD and he would watch and wait upon GOD to answer them. He would actively watch until HE responded to HIS questions, plus GOD was the only One Who could provide the answers. GOD responded.

This is a message for Christians today. There is just so much we can do but there comes a time when we need to back off and wait upon the LORD. Waiting and trusting reveals confidence in GOD and HIS sovereignty. Our next scripture reveals GOD’S response to Habakkuk.

HE told him to write it down in verses 2 and 3 because this would take place over a period of time.

Let’s read Habakkuk 2:4-6: (In this scripture, GOD was speaking of the character of these Neo-Babylonians. But notice GOD’S insertion of this profound statement regarding the people of faith during such difficult times – But the righteous one will live by his faith – GOD was providing a contrast between the barbarians who depended upon their physical power and brutality and the people of genuine faith, who rely upon their faith in GOD. In relying upon GOD during these times will draw them even closer to HIM. This is the core from which trusting in the sovereignty of GOD emanates faith regardless of the circumstances.

GOD is in control of history. Romans 8:28 - We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose. The key is that GOD is at work and in control of all things working to bring about the best result according to HIS plan and purpose. Christians are not controlled by things but by GOD being actively involved in all things bringing about good. The things may not look or seem good but the key is that GOD is in control and good will result from them.

Christians must keep in mind that GOD gives us freewill to choose. When we choose wrong, we have to suffer the consequences but even when we make the wrong choices, GOD will be involved to bring about good from these consequences for those who love HIM. Amazing Grace and love from our LORD. GOD revealed the nature of the Chaldeans.

The Five Woe Oracles (This is a “taunt” song which would follow after those oppressed come out from their oppressor.)

6 Won’t all of these take up a taunt against him, with mockery and riddles about him? They will say:
    -         Greed - Woe to him who amasses what is not his—how much  longer?  and loads himself with goods taken in pledge.m

-         Injustice - Woe to him who dishonestly makes wealth for his house p  Or dynastyto place his nest on high, to escape from the reach of disaster!q Pr 11:28; Jr 22:13; 49:16; Ob 4; Rv 18:7 (Verse 9)

-         Violence - Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed and founds a town with injustice!s Ezk 22:2-3; Mc 3:10 (Verse 12)

-         Seduction - Woe to him who gives his neighbors drink, pouring out your wrathv Or venomand even making them drunk, in order to look at their nakedness! (Verse 15)

-         Idolatry - Woe to him who says to wood: Wake up! or to mute stone: Come alive! Can it teach? Look! It may be plated with gold and silver, yet there is no breath in it at all. (Verse 19)

There are two (2) paths people can take. One is the path of faith and the other is the path of unbelief (no faith, faith in their ability and strength, GOD is not even considered relevant.). GOD will not let the Chaldeans go unpunished. GOD’S chosen will have victory as indicated by the “taunting” woe song. The people of faith will be able to tolerate those oppressive times because they will know that GOD is in control and what they are experiencing is for their good.

Now this is faith which comes from abiding in the care and trust of our LORD. That cannot be achieved intellectually but only can come from Spiritual growth and maturity through relationship and experience. It comes through the process of sanctification, which is completely relying upon the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

GOD describes those who HE will allow to conquer the Jews. They will be arrogant, without integrity, they will take whatever they want – land, material possessions and people – just because they can and they are powerful.

GOD was saying, I will allow these barbarians to punish MY people but in turn I will punish them. Evil does not go unpunished.

GOD had revealed HIS plan and purpose to Habakkuk and Habakkuk was in awe of HIM. GOD revealed truth to HIM and Habakkuk accepted it on faith. Faith is the hallmark of this revelation.

Let’s read Habakkuk 3:2, 17-19b:

2 Lord, I have heard the report about You; Lord, I stand in awe of Your deeds. Revive Your work in these years; make it known in these years. In Your wrath remember mercy!
It is clear to Habakkuk that GOD will not change HIS plan. In essence, Habakkuk was saying. “Now I understand and YOU are awesome!”

Habakkuk asked GOD to send a revival during these bad times and to temper HIS wrath with mercy. The word used for “revive” means to completely make the old new. Christians can rejoice because that is exactly what CHRIST does within them. Habakkuk knew Judah would have to experience the barbarians for their own good. He requested GOD to send a revival in the hearts and lives of HIS people during these difficult times and to remember to be merciful. GOD’S wrath was coming and he understood why.
JESUS not only took our sin upon Himself but GOD’S wrath as recorded in Romans 5:9:

9) Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
As Christians, we have a new covenant with GOD through the shed blood of CHRIST as our Savior. We have not only been forgiven for our sins and spared the wrath of GOD. Non-Christian must face the wrath of GOD because of un-forgiven sin.

When Christians face difficult times, it often sparks a revival in the hearts and lives of the people. We saw people returning to worship and prayer after 911 but it has soon faded. In fact, it seems that, as a nation, we have gotten further from GOD. During difficult times GOD’S people can ask GOD to remember to be merciful.
This leads Habakkuk to his amazing conclusion, which resulted from him asking GOD questions, which led him to behold the awesomeness of GOD. He saw GOD’S love and care for HIS people through oppression. HIS desire is for HIS chosen to return to HIM. HE is sovereign and how that is accomplished is HIS plan. HIS plan may not look good to those impacted by it or to onlookers but HE is in control. HIS desire is for HIS chosen to look to HIM. Does this mean Christians are to be passive? No! It means as they live during difficult times that they interact with HIM even more and continue to build an intimate relationship with HIM.

Let’s read Habakkuk 3:17-19: (Habakkuk’s conclusion)

17 Though the fig tree does not bud and there is no fruit on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls,
18 yet I will triumph in Yahweh; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation!r
Ps 73:25
19 Yahweh my Lord is my strength; He makes my feet like those of a deers
Ps 18:33and enables me to walk on mountain heights!t
Habakkuk knew hard times were coming but when they came what should HIS chosen do? What should Christians do? When things are at their worst:

-         No fig tree budding, No fruit on the vines, No olives, No food, No Sheep and No cattle. This is as bad as it gets physically, yet GOD is in control and that is when the righteous will live by faith. Fear is surpassed by faith.
When things are a bad as they can get physically, Habakkuk was saying, “My faith in GOD will not waiver.” Habakkuk would look to GOD and rejoice in his salvation. He would trust GOD and not blame HIM. GOD would be his strength and guide him through these bad times. HE would lift him above the fracas, which would allow him to walk upon the mountains tops in the midst of serve turmoil below.

Christians must keep in their minds that GOD did not create humans for time but for eternity. Earth is the training ground for eternity. The question is, “Where will we spend eternity with GOD or separated from HIM?”

Will America face a major crisis? We hope not but the path we are going down indicates that we will. Can GOD pull the plug on our security? Oh, yes. Can GOD allow another religion to rise up and replace Christianity? Oh, yes. When we lose that which many have considered unimportant, it may be the jolt that is needed to bring HIS chosen back to HIM. HE raised up the Chaldeans to conquer Judah, HIS chosen people, to lead them back to HIM. HE saw value in HIS people and HE was their hope. HE is our hope today, even more because we have CHRIST.

We must keep in mind that the righteous will live by faith in GOD and CHRIST. What makes a person righteous? Nothing but the shed blood of JESUS! When you ask JESUS to forgive you for your sins and to come into your life, your sins have been placed upon HIM and HIS righteousness has been placed upon you.  2 Corinthians 5:21:

21 He (GOD) made the One (JESUS) who did not know sin n 1Jn 3:5 to be sin o Or be a sin offering for us, p Rm 8:3; Gl 3:13; 1Pt 2:24 so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Blessings!
