Bible Study - Miracle – Glory Revealed – October 2, 2011

This is lesson one (1) in our new series entitled “It’s a Miracle.”

Our scripture is John 1:14, 18 and 2:1-11.

Our other lessons for October will be:

Our first lesson is on JESUS’ revealing HIS glory by turning water into wine. Miracles are wonderful but must be kept in perspective. JESUS performed miracles to confirm that HE was the promised Son of GOD, the Messiah. The prophets of the Old Testament had stated very clearly all that would identify the Messiah.

We just completed the study, “Balanced Spiritual Growth” and miracles is listed as a gift of the Holy Spirit. The purpose of a miracle is never to bring glory to the person through whom the miracle occurs but it is always to point to CHRIST and confirm HIS Messiah-ship. Being human our minds jump to, “Gee, I would like to witness a miracle.” You are a miracle and living in a miracle, the human body.
Just consider the odds of you existing as a human. Consider your ancestral line and if one critical ancestor’s life had been cut short you would not exist. Consider the odds of out of millions of sperm and that one egg in your mother’s womb that produced you. You are special and produced for a purpose in accordance to GOD’S timing, based upon your willingness to become a member of HIS family through the miracle of rebirth through CHRIST. You are no accident and you were not created for time but for eternity.

When we think of miracles, we tend to think of extraordinary things happening, like a mountain jumping into the sea on your command. Turning water into wine, the first recorded miracle of JESUS, seems self-serving. It served a social purpose at the request of HIS mother. What does it tell us as Christians? Let’s explore.

Turning water into wine at a social event seems trivial compared to the many other needs. The point is that it was important to JESUS’ mother. So what does that mean? It means that as the children of GOD, Christians can ask CHRIST to do what might seem trivial. Some Christians hesitate to ask CHRIST for things that seem trivial. But they can always ask but it is HIS decision whether or not HE will provide. HE always listens.

Let’s consider the setting. JESUS, His mother and HIS disciples were at a wedding which was a festive event. The wedding ceremony had been performed and the celebration began with plenty of food and wine. No, it was not grape juice, it was fermented and contained alcohol. This celebration lasted several days.

Let’s back up and review the Jewish wedding custom. First, the fathers of the couple would agree on the marriage of the couple. This was a formal contract and the couple was considered husband and wife when the marriage contract was agreed to but the marriage would not be consummated for a year or more.

The couple would not live together during this betrothal period, nor have sexual relations. The husband would prepare a home for his bride and when it was completed and at the proper time and unannounced, he would go to the home of the bride’s father to claim her as his own. He would take her to their new home. Family and friends would stop what they were doing and form a procession and follow the groom with his bride to the wedding ceremony. After the wedding ceremony, the celebration began and would last for several days.

Do you recall that JESUS used the example of the groom coming to receive HIS bride, the living church, to illustrate HIS second coming? HE has gone to prepare a place for Christians and HE will return to claim all who have not already gone to be with HIM in physical death. It is recorded in Matthew 25:1-13. The message is for Christians to stay ready because they do not know the hour the bride groom will come.

This brings us back to the occasion recorded in our scripture. JESUS was attending the celebration of marriage, a festive occasion.

Let’s read John 2:1-5:
The First Sign: Turning Water into Wine
1 On the third day a wedding took place in Cana of Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and 2 Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding as well. 3 When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother told Him, “They don’t have any wine.” 4 “What has this concern of yours to do with Me,[1]• woman?” Jesus asked. “My hour[2] has not yet come.” 5 “Do whatever He tells you,” His mother told the servants.

JESUS’ mother, JESUS and HIS disciple were attending a wedding. The host ran out of wine and Mary brought the matter to the attention of JESUS. On the surface it seems that JESUS remarks were curt, like “You are not the hostess, so why are you concerned?” In the Greek it reads, “What to ME and to you, woman?” In essence, JESUS was cutting the apron strings by referring to HIS mother as “woman” rather than “mother.” This was not to show disrespect but a change in the authority over HIS life. HE would be guided by GOD. Yet, JESUS was obedient to HIS mother’s request out of respect and the need that needed to be taken care of.

Mary’s response was one of faith, “Do what HE tells you.”

Does this mean Christians can approach JESUS and request help with matters that seem trivial? Absolutely!!! Let your requests be known to HIM. HE will respond but it may be no, wait, or it is done.

Let’s read John 2:6-10:
6 Now six stone water jars had been set there for Jewish purification. Each contained 20 or 30 gallons.[3]7 “Fill the jars with water,” Jesus told them. So they filled them to the brim. 8 Then He said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the chief servant.”[4] And they did. 9 When the chief servant tasted the water (after it had become wine), he did not know where it came from—though the servants who had drawn the water knew. He called the groom 10 and told him, “Everybody sets out the fine wine first, then, after people have drunk freely, the inferior. But you have kept the fine wine until now.”

JESUS saw six (6) stone water jars which were for washing the feet of the guests since the roads were dusty and for the purification of their hands and eating utensils. This cleaning ritual was required by Jewish laws and tradition but not the Mosaic Law. These were large jars holding 20 to 30 gallons of water.

Some water had been taken from the jars to pour over the guest’s feet and the purification process; therefore, they needed to be topped off with water. Why do you think JESUS wanted the servants to top off all of the jars with water? I think HE wanted them to know that without a doubt, they all contained water. HE knew that a miracle was going to take place, which would reveal HIS true identity as The SON of GOD. Only GOD can turn water into wine and when HE does, HE changes something of less value to something of greater value to meet the need. This is what CHRIST does when people accept CHRIST as their Savior and make HIM the LORD of their lives. HE makes something of great value out of their lives when they allow HIM to lead and guide them. All the water had to do was to be water, JESUS did the rest.

Give your life to HIM and allow HIM to make your life into a life of great value and meaningful purpose.

JESUS instructed the servants to draw some liquid out of the jars and take it to the chief servant to sample. The chief servant tasted the wine and judged it as the best wine of the celebration. He complemented the groom in saving his best wine until last, which was very unusual. Most grooms had the best wine served first and then switched to a poorer quality wine after his guests got drunk and did not know what they were drinking.

Let’s read John 2:11:
11 Jesus performed this first sign[5] in Cana of Galilee. He displayed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

JESUS turned water into wine, which established HIS authority over physical matter. The Apostle John used the word sign. What does a sign do? When you are traveling in an area you do not know, a sign is a welcomed sight. It points to something. It gives direction and often comfort. This miracle pointed to JESUS, which John understood more fully in retrospect.

We need to keep in mind that the Apostle John wrote this about 70 years after the resurrection of CHRIST. This sign got JESUS’ disciples attention but they would not fully comprehend what this meant until after HIS death, resurrection, ascension and being indwelled by the Holy Spirit. The same is with us today. The longer we journey with JESUS, the more we get to really know HIM.

Let’s consider another aspect of this miracle. There were six (6) jars. The number six (6) according to the Jewish tradition was an incomplete number. The number seven (7) was a number signifying completion. Only JESUS can make the incomplete complete.

The scripture refers to humans as jars of clay in 2 Corinthians 4:6-7:
6 For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness”[2]—He has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of God’s glory in the face of Jesus Christ.

7 Now we have this treasure in clay jars, so that this extraordinary power may be from God and not from us.

Our lives were once filled with the water of searching for something of value. When we allow JESUS to fill our lives, HE will change them into something of great value; the indwelling of HIS presence. Wine was used for healing. When we allow JESUS to fill our lives, HE brings Spiritual healing. All true Christians are a miracle because HE has changed them and is transforming them, through the renewing of their minds into the image of CHRIST.

Notice that the miracle of JESUS turning water into wine in verse 11 resulted in HIS disciple’s faith in HIM deepening. When we are in right relationship with CHRIST, as we journey with HIM and see HIM perform miracles, our faith is strengthened. CHRIST is still in the business of performing miracles according to GOD’S plan and purpose. As we walk with HIM, we will witness them. Miracles astound us but they often fade. Then we want CHRIST to do another miracle. Miracles are signs to point and reveal GOD. We must be careful not to seek the miracle in place of fullness of CHRIST.

The Gospel according to John has two (2) levels of meaning - (1) the literal meaning (2) the symbolic meaning.

Some Bible scholars view the changing of water into wine as CHRIST replacing Judaism with its ceremonies, tradition and rituals with the saving power of CHRIST, through grace.

Let’s keep in mind that the Apostle John wrote this gospel after he understood the Old Testament scriptures regarding the promised Messiah, experienced the physical presence of CHRIST and experienced the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. John had a full understanding of GOD’S purpose for the world through CHRIST, as our next scripture will reveal.

Let’s read John 1:14 and 18:
14 The Word became flesh[13]and took up residence[14] among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the • One and Only Son[15] from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John referred to CHRIST as “The Word.” This brings the Old Testament and the New Testament together. CHRIST, GOD’S ONLY SON, chose to leave HIS Glory in heaven to come to earth and live as a human. CHRIST’S love for the human race compelled HIM to subject Himself to all that humans experience and to give HIS life to set all who would believe in HIM free from the bondage of sin and its consequences, eternal death. HE came to earth to reveal HIS Glory.

As prophesied in the Old Testament, CHRIST became flesh and lived upon earth as a human to reveal the love of GOD to a world lost in sin with no way to escape. GOD is true to HIS Word. That is why Christians are to study GOD’S Word, the Bible. CHRIST is unique because HE was and still is the ONE and ONLY SON of GOD. HIS life reflected the love of GOD for all mankind. CHRIST represented grace and truth.
As you may recall, JESUS’ disciples wanted to see the FATHER and JESUS had this to say in John 14:8-11:
8 Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us." 9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10 "Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 11 "Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.

Let’s read John 1:18:
18 No one has ever seen God.[16]The One and Only Son[17]— the One who is at the Father’s side[18]— He has revealed Him.

The Apostle John made it clear that no one has seen GOD but CHRIST revealed HIM. There was no question in John’s mind and through his association, experience and indwelling of the Holy Spirit that CHRIST was the true promised Messiah, GOD incarnate in the flesh.

It is interesting that the use of the word “SON” to the Jews meant likeness to the FATHER and not the FATHER’S offspring.

Who is JESUS to you? Is HE a prophet, a good man who lived upon earth and died or is HE the true SON of GOD WHO died for your sins to set you free for the consequences of sin, which is eternal death?

The Apostle John walked with JESUS as HIS disciple. He saw HIM die upon the cross. But most of all he witnessed HIS resurrection, ascension and the indwelling and empowering of the promised Holy Spirit. He knew that CHRIST was truth and the true SON of GOD.

If you have not done so, ask CHRIST to forgive you of your sins and to come into your heart right now. If you ask, HE will. Then thank HIM for saving your life and ask HIM to help you live for HIM each moment of each day. Blessings.

Bible Study – Spiritual Growth – Go – September 25, 2011

This is our final lesson in the series entitled “Balanced Spiritual Growth.”

Our scripture is John 1:29, 35-46, 49-51.

This is our final lesson in our series of study. We have studied connect, grow and serve. Christians must be connected to GOD by the Holy Spirit, which means people cannot be Christians in name only. When they are truly connected to GOD, they are also connected with each other in the living body. When Christians are connected by the Holy Spirit, GOD equips them with gifts to minister and serve. As they obediently serve, they grow in knowledge of HIM through Bible study and activity.

Christians can be fully equipped with Spiritual gifts and power but they must share it with others as led by the Holy Spirit. Sharing or witnessing to others often frightens many Christians. They fear not being able to answer a Spiritual or Biblical question - I know, I have been there.

There is one powerful weapon you have that answers the most complicated Biblical questions, your personal testimony. It is like the man born blind whom JESUS healed. When questioned by the religious leaders about how his healing had been accomplished, he responded with “I was blind but now I see.” Darkness turned to light. At a point in time our spiritual darkness turned to Spiritual light.
You may have to tell some people, that you are not able to answer all their questions but this you know -----. Tell them how you came to know CHRIST as your Savior.

Your testimony can be modeled after Paul’s testimony regarding his conversion on the road to Damascus found in Acts 26. He told of his life before CHRIST, his conversion experience (how he came to CHRIST), life since he encountered CHRIST and how to become a Christian. Prepare a 2-3 minute testimony for times when time is of the essence and a longer testimony 15 – 20 minute when you have the time. Write it down and practice it.

When witnessing to some, you may have the opportunity to ask them to pray to receive CHRIST. Ask them to pray for CHRIST to forgive them for their sins, acknowledging that HE died for them and ask HIM to come into their life. When they pray such a prayer, ask them to thank JESUS for coming into their life.

Help them to understand that CHRIST in them makes them a Christian, not the church they join. Encourage them to read the Bible, pray and attend a church where the gospel of CHRIST is preached and taught. It is vital for the new Christians to receive Spiritual nourishment for them to grow Spiritually. The Gospel of John is a book in the Bible for them to begin reading.

When you witness, when possible go in pairs and always pray before, during and after witnessing.

I have found that when GOD leads you to bear witness, HE has prepared the way. Do not be discouraged if the person you witness to does not ask CHRIST into his/her life. Use scripture when you present the plan of salvation because GOD’S Word never returns void. The Roman road to salvation is good to use – Romans 3:23, 6:23, 5:8 and 10:8-10. But also, keep in mind, it is not the person saying the exact words but the attitude of the heart of the person to whom you witness. I have heard of people simply saying, “LORD, I give up” and the miracle of rebirth takes place quicker than the twinkling of the eye. GOD’S desire for a person to become a Christian is more than your desire.

The indwelling Holy Spirit gives balance and courage to Christians as they grow, mature and obediently serve GOD. Dying to self is part of the process of sanctification, through the renewing or transformation of the mind, which happens when building the right relationship with CHRIST. Christians must decide who will rule their lives - self (flesh) or the Holy Spirit. This requires a decision such as, “LORD here I am, as I am, help me to be all YOU want me to be. I yield my life to YOU. Lead and guide my life.” This begins a wonderful journey. It will not be a journey of ease but a journey to make you into the image of CHRIST.

Our lesson is on go. When we accept CHRIST as our Savior, our lives are transformed from walking in darkness to walking in the light. When we see the light of CHRIST, we have a choice. Do we share the Good News or do we keep it to ourselves?

Christians know the cure for sin and its consequences, which is eternal death. If we knew the cure for a dreaded disease and a friend of ours had that disease, would we keep that information to ourselves? I don’t think so.

CHRIST commissioned Christians to go and make disciples. All Christians are to bear witness as GOD gives them opportunity. As mentioned earlier, some may say, “I am scared to witness.” Sorry, all Christians bear witness either silently or not so silent – drug store, grocery, school, shopping, restaurants, church, driving, work, socials and the list goes on. Christians must remember who they are.
GOD calls some into special service.

We saw in last week’s lesson that HE calls and gifts missionaries, pastors, teachers, apostles, evangelists and prophets. It is vital that GOD issues the invitation. Our scripture will focus on the calling of the disciples to follow JESUS.

Keep in mind that the Apostle John wrote the Gospel of John. It was written after 70 A. D. John was giving a firsthand account of the ministry of CHRIST after walking with CHRIST as HIS disciple. HE witnessed the adult life, crucifixion, resurrection, ascension of CHRIST, the coming and anointing of the promised Holy Spirit and the power of the Holy Spirit through ministry.

Let’s read John 1:29 and 35-39: (Why We Go)

29 The next day John (John the Baptizer or Baptist, Jesus’ cousin) saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the One I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who has surpassed me, because He existed before me.’ 31 I didn’t know Him, but I came baptizing with[27] water so He might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John testified, “I watched the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He rested on Him. 33 I didn’t know Him, but He[28] who sent me to baptize with[29] water told me, ‘The One you see the Spirit descending and resting on—He is the One who baptizes with[30] the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and testified that He is the Son of God!”[31]35 Again the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look! The Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus. 38 When Jesus turned and noticed them following Him, He asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to Him, “• Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are You staying?” 39 “Come and you’ll see,” He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day. It was about 10 in the morning.[32]

John the Baptist was JESUS’ cousin. John was called by GOD to be the herald or forerunner for the Messiah. John the Baptist preached repentance and baptism as evidence of that repentance. GOD had revealed to John the Baptist that he would know Who the Messiah was when he saw the Spirit descend upon that person. John saw the Spirit come upon JESUS when he baptized HIM. John knew that JESUS was the promised Messiah WHO would take away the sins of the world. John knew the sacrificial system. Worshippers had to make animal sacrifices through the shedding of blood to atone for sin. HE knew that JESUS was the Lamb of GOD WHO would take away the sins of the world. John baptized with water but JESUS baptized with the Holy Spirit.

When John the Baptist identified JESUS as the Lamb of GOD, two (2) of his disciples left him and followed JESUS. JESUS wanted to know, “What are you looking for?” This is a very important question. When you follow JESUS, what are you looking for? Is it to be socially correct? Or do you see HIM as your Savior and you want HIM in order to obediently serve HIM. Ponder this question.

They wanted to know where he was staying which indicated that they wanted to get to know HIM and hear what HE had to say about serving GOD. They were planning on a long term relationship. They called HIM teacher, which indicated that they were committed to HIM. They were seeking a closer relationship with GOD through HIS teaching. In their walk with HIM, they would learn that HE was GOD incarnate but this would take time and involvement.

The Spiritual walk of the disciples is much like the walk of many Christians. Salvation is the beginning process of building an intimate, loving relationship with CHRIST. As they grow Spiritually, they get a deeper personal understanding of HIM. As they continue their walk, false notions about being a Christian are dispelled and their feet become more solidly planted upon the solid rock of CHRIST. Truth emerges from a sea of misconceptions, doubts and fears. HIS light becomes ever more brilliant as our relationship becomes more intimate. Christians will never reach their pinnacle until they see HIM, which will be their glorification, but the journey is awesome.

Christians need to look at the lives of the disciples to see their struggles when following JESUS. It was not easy. It was not always clear but we have the opportunity to know the end result and we have the indwelling Holy Spirit to teach us and lead us to truth.

In our next scripture, we learn the identity of one (1) of those who left John the Baptist to follow JESUS and a good idea who was the second person.

Let’s read John 1:40-46: (Whom to Tell)
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John (the Baptist) and followed Him. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah!”[33] (which means “Anointed One”), 42 and he brought [Simon]* to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, He said, “You are Simon, son of John.[34]You will be called • Cephas” (which means “Rock”).

The Apostle John identified one (1) of the disciples who left John the Baptist as Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. Speculation is that the Apostle John was the second person to leave and follow JESUS. There are other Bible scholars who believe it was Philip since he was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter. I personally believe it was the Apostle John, the writer because he seems not to refer to himself.

Follow could mean literally follow as accompanying JESUS or follow as becoming a follower of JESUS or both. We know that they became disciples of JESUS, thus followers.

This raises an interesting question, would you define yourself as a follower of JESUS by association or a follower of JESUS by application or both? Are you willing to obediently follow HIM and serve HIM regardless of the cost?

Andrew searched with purpose for his brother, Simon because he had made a marvelous discovery, “We have found the Messiah!” When we have made a wonderful discovery, we want to share it with others. Sharing JESUS with others is the best news we can share. It is life changing.

When JESUS saw Simon, HE gave him a new name meaning “Rock.” The word “saw” means more than noticed but carries the idea of penetrating to the heart to really know him and what he was capable of. Yet, we know Peter denied CHRIST not once but three times. But Peter repented and was broken hearted for what he had done. JESUS knew Peter’s heart. It may be that Peter needed to be broken before he could be an effective disciple. JESUS had a wonderful plan for Peter’s life in service for HIM and the Kingdom of GOD.

Likewise, GOD has a wonderful plan for your life as well. Do you need to confess something that may be holding you back? If so, lay it on the table and talk to CHRIST about it. Time is wasting.

GOD never gives up on HIS children; do not give up on yourself. Confess your sins, repent because GOD forgives, restores and empowers.

Philip and Nathanael
43 The next day He[35] decided to leave for Galilee. Jesus found Philip and told him, “Follow Me!” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael[36] and told him, “We have found the One Moses wrote about in the Law (and so did the prophets): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth!” 46 “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathanael asked him. “Come and see,” Philip answered.

JESUS left Bethany to go to Galilee, the area in which HIS hometown of Nazareth was located. The word “found” indicates that JESUS searched for Philip and a call to follow HIM. Philip responded and searched for Nathanael. Philip’s excitement indicates that he and Nathanael had been searching the scriptures and pondering who the promised Messiah could be. Would it be someone in their lifetime and if so how would they identify HIM?

When Nathanael heard Philip say it was JESUS from Nazareth, it was like “Gee, Nazareth is a nothing place. Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Often reality revealed disappoints our expectations. Many of us build false notions regarding what living the Christian life is all about. When we commit our lives to CHRIST and the rubber hits the road, false expectations are replaced with reality. These false expectations must be dispelled for us to be able to walk in the Spirit of truth depending upon the power of GOD.

The next two (2) disciples to be called were Philip and Nathanael. Notice that JESUS found Philip. Often, GOD seeks us and reveals Himself to us. But notice that Philip found Nathanael. GOD works through Christians to reach others. HE directs us to those ready to receive salvation. You must trust HIS leadership.

When our lives have been touched by JESUS, we want to share the Good News. Nathanael questioned Philip about this person called JESUS. Philip told him to come see for himself. We may not have all the answers and we have to say, “Come see for yourself.” GOD welcomes questioners because HE has the answers.

Let’s read John 1:49-51: (What Results)
47 Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said about him, “Here is a true Israelite; no deceit is in him.” 48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered. 49 “Rabbi,” Nathanael replied, “You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe [only]* because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You[37]will see greater things than this.” 51 Then He said, “• I assure you: You[38]will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending[39] on the • Son of Man.”

As Nathanael approached JESUS, JESUS spoke to him words which would open his Spiritual eyes that HE was truth. When Nathanael encountered truth, he acknowledged JESUS as the “Son of GOD.” They connected. JESUS told him that this was only the beginning of their journey together. This is JESUS’ message to all who accept HIM as their Savior and make HIM the LORD of their lives.

When JESUS calls, we are to respond. We must keep in mind that we were not made for time but for eternity. When Christians respond to HIS call, HE will equip and empower them. Our part is to be available. HE opens closed doors and closes open doors.

We have probed some Spiritual depths regarding Spiritual growth in these lessons. It is all about having the right relationship with CHRIST. Why CHRIST? Because HE is the promised Messiah, WHO gave HIS life, through the shedding of HIS blood to pay the debt for sin that every human owes. By trusting in CHRIST as your SAVIOR, you can be set free from the penalty of sin, which is eternal death and separation from GOD WHO loves you. You can experience the miracle of the rebirth and be born into GOD’S family and receive the gifts of eternal life and grace.

Bible Study – Spiritual Growth – Serve – September 18, 2011

This is lesson three (3) in our series entitled “Balanced Spiritual Growth.”

Our scripture is Romans 12:3-15.

So far in our series of study we have explored “Connect”, “Grow” and this week “Serve.” Christians, through the miracle of rebirth that only the shed blood CHRIST provides through faith, are connected to GOD by the indwelling Holy Spirit. Because GOD is the Spiritual FATHER of all Christians, Christians are connected Spiritually with their brothers and sisters in CHRIST. These connections form the living church of which CHRIST is the head.

The Apostle Paul was writing to the Christians in Rome. Up to Chapter 12 he had presented the way to salvation. Chapter 12 was a major break from “the way to salvation” to “living” as a Christian. He began chapter 12 by writing about Christians being a living sacrifice in verses 1-2:
A Living Sacrifice
1 Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship.[1] 2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

“Therefore” reaches back to all that Paul had written about salvation. The next step was putting their salvation into action. In order to do that, the Christian had to have a new mindset through the renewing or transforming of his/her mind. A sacrifice is destined to die.

Paul considered that he died when JESUS died, was buried with JESUS, resurrected with JESUS, ascended to heaven and returned to earth. He was here on earth to obediently serve GOD through CHRIST. In essence, his home was heaven and this was accomplished through the renewing of his mind.

When you are in right relationship, through the renewing of your mind, you are in perfect harmony with the will of GOD. When you understand your relationship with GOD through the transformation of your mind, you do not get the big head. Because you know that you were a wretched sinner and that the love of GOD, through the shed blood of CHRIST, washed you whiter than snow. Salvation placed your feet upon the solid rock of CHRIST and you obediently serve HIM with humility. Because of this GOD can trust HIS power being manifested through you in the form of Spiritual gifts to minister to others, as HE directs.

Let’s read Romans 12:3-5:
Many Gifts but One Body
3 For by the grace given to me, I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he should think. Instead, think sensibly, as God has distributed a measure of faith to each one. 4 Now as we have many parts in one body, and all the parts do not have the same function, 5 in the same way we who are many are one body in Christ and individually members of one another.

The word “for” ties back to verses 1 and 2. Paul understood that GOD’S grace had been given to him. Grace is a gift from GOD at the moment a person accepts CHRIST as his/her SAVIOR. Grace is unmerited favor and cannot be earned. The Greek word for “grace” is “charisma” and means “gift of grace.”

In the New Testament the word “charismatic” referred to all Christians, representing a variety of Spiritual gifts. In today’s society it generally refers to a Christian who speaks in tongues. The Christian community must get beyond the gift of tongues because there are so many more Spiritual gifts. Often, those who receive the gift of tongues think they have arrived Spiritually. Remember it is GOD who distributes the gift or gifts of the Spirit as HE chooses. The Christian who does not have the gift of tongues is no less a Spirit filled Christian than those who do.

Grace cannot be earned. It is a free gift which allows Christians, once
they have confessed their sin and repented, to obediently serve without
getting bogged down in the guilt of sin. It does not excuse sin and does
not eliminate the consequences for sin. But once sin is confessed and
the Christian has repented; he/she is forgiven and restored by GOD’S
grace through CHRIST. Satan will try his best to not allow Christians to
live in the grace that GOD extends to all Christians who have confessed
their sins and repented of them.

Satan’s desire is to defeat every Christian and keep him/her in bondage.
That is why GOD gives to some the gift of tongues as a personal
assurance of HIS acceptance and often for private use and comfort.

Because Christians have been forgiven and live under grace and have been gifted, they should not think more highly of themselves. Paul admonished Christians to understand that GOD has given each a measure of faith to obediently serve HIM. Christians have a unique function in the living body in conjunction with their brothers and sisters in CHRIST, as led by the indwelling Holy Spirit, to carry out GOD’S plan and purpose.

Just as the human body has many parts, visible and not visible but function in unity and harmony as one, we have one Spiritual living body and one head. GOD’S intent is for the living body, the true church, to function as one with the head being CHRIST. In order to accomplish HIS plan and purpose, HE equips the living body accordingly.

Let’s Romans 12:6-8:
6 According to the grace given to us, we have different gifts: If prophecy, use it according to the standard (proportion) of faith; 7 if service, in service; if teaching, in teaching; 8 if exhorting, in exhortation; giving, with generosity; leading, with diligence; showing mercy, with cheerfulness.
GOD gives Spiritual gifts to whom HE chooses, because HE gives gifts to Christians according to HIS plan and purpose and their function in the living body. Paul lists seven (7) of the Spiritual gifts. Paul lists the gift along with the application of the gift by those who receive the gift.
Prophecy – A calling to declare GOD’S message in ways people can understand and delivered by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The message can be for the present or to the future or both. The message is dependent upon the proportion of faith of the presenter.

Service – JESUS came to earth to serve. The Greek word is “diakonia” and refers to service rendered by a servant. This is where we get the word “deacon” which means to “minister to” or “to assist.” It referred to waiting tables and carries the idea of supplying the necessities of life.

Teaching – Special calling to teach the Scriptures, doctrine and Christian living. It refers to “the one teaching”, which embraces another gift listed in other scripture “speaking.” Teachers give insightful instruction for the application of revealed truth for living. Teachers are more accountable to GOD.

Exhorting – This is encouraging others to do GOD’S will and fight the good fight and cross the finish line. The Greek word carries the idea of persuasion, comfort and support with compassion. It conveys hope to those struggling to live according to GOD’S standard.

Giving – It is sharing what we have with others in need, as led by the Holy Spirit. It is giving of our personal goods or money to meet another’s needs. All Christians are to be generous givers but some are especially gifted with resources. All are to give with a joyful Spirit. We must keep in mind that the widow’s mite glorified GOD. JESUS pointed this out to HIS disciples. It is NOT the size of the gift but the obedience of giving. To some GOD gives the gift of making money for the purpose of giving.

Leading – This is the gift of administration. Those who have this gift seek GOD’S leadership for the church and lead the church accordingly. They lead humbly but with diligence, which means “with haste.” Leaders do not procrastinate but get it done as led by the Holy Spirit. Some believe that since Paul placed “leading” between “giving” and “mercy” that those administering the giving are to do with humble hearts.

Mercy – This gift is two-fold – ready to forgive others or ready to reach out to others in acts of kindness and goodwill. A Christian with this gift is sensitive to those who have faltered or fallen and shows compassion or forgiveness. They know where they came from as sinners saved by grace and the mercy GOD had for them. They in turn extend this same mercy to others. This includes Spiritual needs or physical needs. Those who have addictions may have lost all they had but CHRIST has turned their lives around and they need help to get back on their feet. When Christians have the right relationship, they show mercy with cheerfulness, which carries the idea of hilarity. Mercy is to be expressed eagerly and joyfully and not grudgingly. When we show mercy what does our heart tell us?

These are just a few of the gifts of the Spirit. Here are a few more gifts listed in the Bible. Do you know what your gift is? I know there are tests that can be taken to discover your gift but I find those of little value. Let your Spiritual brothers and sisters tell you what they see in you and often this reveals your gift. But one thing is sure; you have at least one or more Spiritual gifts.

I believe gifts can be added for a specific purpose for a season and others are more permanent. As you obediently serve our LORD, HE equips you according to your Spiritual growth and ability to handle the gift or gifts HE gives you to the proportion of your relationship with HIM. Seek the relationship and these things will be added to you as you need them.

Let’s explore some additional Spiritual gifts:

Celibacy – 1 Corinthians 7:7-8 – 7 I wish that all people were just like me. But each has his own gift from God, one this and another that.
8 I say to the unmarried and to widows: It is good for them if they remain as I am. 9 But if they do not have self-control, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with desire.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11:
4 Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are different activities, but the same God is active in everyone and everything.[2] 7 A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person to produce what is beneficial: 8 to one is given a message of wisdom through the Spirit, to another, a message of knowledge by the same Spirit, 9 to another, faith by the same Spirit, to another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another, the performing of miracles, to another, prophecy, to another, distinguishing between (Discernment), to another, different kinds of languages, to another, interpretation of languages. 11 But one and the same Spirit is active in all these, distributing to each one as He wills.

Voluntary Poverty and Martyrdom – 1 Corinthians 13:3 – 3 And if I donate all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned,[1]but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Ephesians 4:11-16:
11 And He personally gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12 for the training of the saints in the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God’s Son, [growing]* into a mature man with a stature measured by Christ’s fullness. 14 Then we will no longer be little children, tossed by the waves and blown around by every wind of teaching, by human cunning with cleverness in the techniques of deceit. 15 But speaking the truth in love, let us grow in every way into Him who is the head—Christ. 16 From Him the whole body, fitted and knit together by every supporting ligament, promotes the growth of the body for building up itself in love by the proper working of each individual part.

Hospitality, Speaking and Service – 1 Peter 4:9-11 – 9 Be hospitable to one another without complaining. 10 Based on the gift they have received, everyone should use it to serve others,[18] as good managers of the varied grace of God. 11 If anyone speaks, [his speech should be]* like the oracles of God; if anyone serves, [his service should be]* from the strength God provides,[19] so that in everything God may be glorified[20] through Jesus Christ. To Him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. • Amen.

Missionary – Ephesians 3:6-8 – 6 the Gentiles are co-heirs, members of the same body, and partners of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 7 I was made a servant of this [gospel]* by the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by the working of His power. 8 This grace was given to me—the least of all the saints!—to proclaim to the Gentiles the incalculable riches of the Messiah,

1 Corinthians 12:28-31:
28 And God has placed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, next, miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, managing, various kinds of languages. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all do miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in languages? Do all interpret? 31 But desire the greater gifts. And I will show you an even better way.

What is the even better way? LOVE

Christians can have all the Spiritual gifts but if they do not have the love of GOD revealed in their lives, it discredits the Spiritual gifts.

Is this loving sin? NO!!! It is loving the sinner but hating the sin.

There are many other gifts from GOD. Seek first your relationship with HIM and the gift or gifts you need to obediently serve HIM will be given to you as HIS son or daughter in CHRIST, as you grow Spiritually.

Let’s read Romans 12:9-15: (Back to our scripture)
Christian Ethics
9 Love must be without hypocrisy. Detest evil; cling to what is good. 10 Show family affection to one another with brotherly love. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not lack diligence; be fervent in spirit; serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer. 13 Share with the saints in their needs; pursue hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

How can a Christian love without hypocrisy? I believe it is the result of having the right relationship with CHRIST. Loving the unlovely becomes part of the natural process of sanctification. This takes time and the transforming of your mind.

As mentioned earlier, Christians are to love the sinner but hate the sin. Paul stated it as, “detest evil; cling to what is good.”

Show “family affection” to one another with brotherly/sisterly love. In the English language we have one (1) word for love that embraces the various aspects of love. The Greek language has four (4) words for love:

- Family love is related to philo or the love one has for a brother or sister but carries the idea of blood relationships. This is good when we consider that Christians are brothers and sisters through CHRIST with GOD being our FATHER, through the miracle of rebirth.

- Philo is the love we have as the result of friendship. It is a brotherly/sisterly type of love through everyday relationships.

- Agape love is self-giving love that demands nothing in return. A person chooses whether or not to extend agape love to another person. CHRIST extends agape love to us in that while we were sinners HE died for us.

- Eros love is erotic love. It is lust and based upon sensual physical contact. So many people confuse this type of love for true love. But Eros love is temporary and when the physical attraction wears off, and it will, one or both involved in the relationship moves on to another erotic encounter. True love can begin after the Eros wears off but so many like the initial thrill of the moment that they go from one partner to another. The female is more likely to fall in love, I think more so than the male. To the male often the female is a piece of meat for his pleasure and when the pleasure is over, he moves on. The female is left devastated, wounded, scared and fearful of getting involved with another man. Some react differently and think it is cool to jump from one relationship to another not realizing that one day, they will find true love and will have to deal with the consequences of a free lifestyle – abortion, a child, std’s, lack of trust, the desire to sleep around and the list goes on.

Paul continued:

- Love for the right reasons and motives. Men tell women, I love you, when they often really mean I lust for you. They have one motive, to conquer. Paul tells Christians to be honorable.

- Be passionate in serving the LORD with diligence and a fervent Spirit. Serving GOD is exciting.

- Rejoice in hope because GOD can do all things. You are HIS man or woman in the center of HIS will with all of HIS power and wisdom at your disposal. Be patient when you serve GOD because HE has a plan. Trust in that knowledge even though you do not see action because HE is working along beside you to accomplish that plan and purpose.

- During the time of waiting, pray because prayer keeps your mind focused upon HIM. Satan is likely vying for your mind to discourage you. So pray during these times of waiting and in fact pray without ceasing about all things, as led by the Holy Spirit.

- Share what GOD has allowed you to have with your brothers and sisters in CHRIST, as led by the Holy Spirit. How can you share? You can pursue hospitality. Reach out to others in their time of need both physically and Spiritually.

- Bless those who persecute you. Bless and do not curse. Have empathy for others – rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. Put yourself in the place of others.

The Christian life is not for wimps. It is impossible without having the right relationship with CHRIST. HE must live through you to minister to others. You must have HIS strength. You must be connected to the vine, CHRIST, because you are a branch of the true vine, fully equipped to serve GOD as led by and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Paul stated it best in Galatians 2:20 - 20 "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Christians must become a living sacrifice. A sacrifice is designed to die. Christians must die to self and live for CHRIST. This is accomplished by having the right relationship with CHRIST and allowing HIM to transform you by the renewing of your minds. This is the process of sanctification. Relax and yield your bodies to HIM. Here I am LORD, as I am with all my faults, only you can make me into the servant YOU want me to be. So take my life as it is, the good and the bad, and give me the strength to be the Christian you want me to be. Help me to grow Spiritually so that I am qualified to be equipped with any gifts you have for me to use for your glory. Blessings.

Bible Study – Spiritual Growth – Grow – September 11, 2011 (Revised)

This is lesson two (2) in our series entitle “Balanced Spiritual Growth.”

Our scripture is 2 Timothy 3.

Second Timothy was written by the Apostle Paul from prison to Timothy who was in Ephesus. Paul had been arrested and placed under house arrest about a year or so earlier. He was released and then arrested a second time. This time he was placed in prison and was awaiting execution by orders from Emperor Nero. Second Timothy was written about 66-67 A.D.

Paul knew his time was drawing close, unless the LORD came to his rescue. He was passing the Spiritual baton to Timothy. Paul looked upon Timothy as his son because he had led him to faith in CHRIST and he was preparing him for the days ahead when he would be gone. Timothy was in Ephesus, which was a cosmopolitan city but was also a city of spiritual corruption.

Paul knew that Christians faced false teachers and that troubling times already existed and could get worse. Paul was a stalwart for Christianity. Was he contemplating that once he was executed that all Christians would face terrible persecution? Paul was an icon and if his CHRIST could not save him, then all Christians would be vulnerable to attack by non-Christians. Paul had already been delivered from bad situations, even death, by the power of GOD. But unless GOD delivered him again, he faced death. Even the faith of those in the Christian community could be shaken when Paul was executed. It would certainly give the false teachers something negative to say about Christianity and the power of GOD.
Timothy likely had to deal with the fact that his mentor, Paul, was facing death. When it happened, he too would have to deal with his death and the whys that can rush in when a loved one dies. He may have thought GOD would come to Paul’s rescue at the last minute.

We, as humans, try to make super humans out of Spiritual leaders. JESUS’ disciples had to deal with HIS crucifixion. Their despair was turned to joy when GOD resurrected HIM from the dead.

Paul was preparing Timothy for the rocky Spiritual road ahead.

So what does this have to do with Spiritual growth? Paul mentored Timothy. Paul was an example to Timothy of what it meant to walk with CHRIST through the good times and the bad. Paul encouraged Timothy to study the scriptures to know the truth so that he would not be led astray by false teachings, so he could teach and preach truth and remain strong in the LORD.

Second Timothy records the last words Paul had for Timothy before he departed this earth. Likely, after Paul’s death, Timothy read and reread this letter many times to extract every morsel he could from Paul’s letter to him.

Difficult times often produce Spiritual growth and maturity. It is vital to read and study GOD’S Word, especially during difficult times. Often, during these times GOD will give you a special verse of scripture which will sustain you.

Fellow Christian teachers, leaders and friends can inspire us to walk the talk but we must be careful that we do not elevate him/her to deity status. A Christian’s goal is to be made in the image of CHRIST through the process of sanctification – Bible study, application, confession, allowing the Holy Spirit to lead and guide him/her. Build your relationship with CHRIST by abiding in HIM. HE is the vine and Christians are the branches. It is HIS power and Spiritual nutrients flowing from HIM to us, as we obediently serve HIM, which results in Spiritual growth, maturity and good fruit.

However, there are times when the branches need to be pruned in order to produce more fruit. Pruning is no fun but necessary.

Do you study the Bible? Is it exciting? Do you study it to gain knowledge or for it to transform your life? Do you mentor younger Christians? If not, why not? Most of us who have journeyed with CHRIST have a wealth of Spiritual experience that would benefit younger Christians. Paul invested his life in many but especially in Timothy.

Let’s read 2 Timothy 3:1-9: (Standing Against False Teaching)
Difficult Times Ahead
1 But know this: difficult times will come in the last days. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, without love for what is good, 4 traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 holding to the form of religion but denying its power. Avoid these people! 6 For among them are those who worm their way into households and capture idle women burdened down with sins, led along by a variety of passions, 7 always learning and never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so these also resist the truth, men who are corrupt in mind, worthless in regard to the faith. 9 But they will not make further progress, for their lack of understanding will be clear to all, as theirs[1] was also.

The Apostle Paul was telling Timothy to pay special attention to what he was writing. Bad days are coming in these last days. What last days? Paul, the other apostles and many Christians were looking for the immediate return of CHRIST. The last days began the day CHRIST ascended into heaven. We are in the last days before CHRIST’S return to earth the second time. These are the days of grace therefore Christians are to obediently work as our LORD directs because the harvest is bountiful.

Paul gives a list of nineteen (19) societal conditions which mark these last days. We can look at our society today and see the same conditions. No one knows the moment that CHRIST will return, not even the CHRIST, only GOD. Paul’s message to Christians then and to Christians today was “Be Prepared.”

In verse 5, Paul wrote of people who wanted to appear religious by holding to the form of religion but denied the power of GOD. There was no evidence in their lives of good fruit or that GOD was real in their lives. Are we playing church today? We attend church; we hear a message and often say it was wonderful. The question is, “Do we put into action what GOD, through the Holy Spirit, leads us to do?” Are we hearers of the Word and not doers of the Word?

Paul was addressing false teachers who would beguile their way into the lives of new, immature Christians. This was especially true of female Christians. Females had been kept from worship by the Jewish religion. Pagan religions used and abused them. Women were hungry for truth and these false teachers took full advantage of them. Therefore, they never received the real truth. These false teachers were deceivers and workers of evil, just as two (2) of Pharaoh’s magicians, Jannes (JAN eez) and Jambrez (JAM breez). They tried to deceive by attempting to duplicate the miracles of GOD when Moses asked Pharaoh to free the Israelites from Egyptian slavery.

Paul was telling Timothy not to fret over these false teachers. They can only fool those searching for truth for so long because their lack of good fruit both in their lives and the lives of those they teach, will expose them.

Let’s read 2 Timothy 3:10-13: (Follow Good Examples)
The Sacred Scriptures
10 But you have followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, and endurance, 11 along with the persecutions and sufferings that came to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured! Yet the Lord rescued me from them all. 12 In fact, all those who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 13 Evil people and imposters will become worse, deceiving and being deceived.

Paul reminds Timothy that he, Timothy, had been privy to Paul’s walk with CHRIST. He had observed the good times and the bad times in his journey. He knew what Paul taught and how he lived on a daily basis. He also knew how he faced opposition in Antioch, Iconium and especially Lystra.

Lystra was Timothy’s home town. Paul led Timothy to CHRIST. It was in Lystra where Paul was stoned and left for dead. (This is where many Bible scholars believe that Paul actually died and went to, what he called the third heaven as stated in 2 Corinthians 12:2 - 2 I know a man in Christ who was caught up into the third heaven 14 years ago. Whether he was in the body or out of the body, I don’t know; God knows.)

Paul was telling Timothy, when you teach and preach truth, you will face persecution. Persecution comes with the job, so do not be discouraged when it comes your way. He encouraged Timothy to keep the purpose of his calling, the fundamentals of his faith in CHRIST, exercise patience and love just as he saw in Paul, especially during difficult times.

When Paul referred to “patience” he was not referring to the act of waiting but to one’s attitude while waiting. Patience, love and endurance go hand in hand when serving the LORD. When Christians show these attributes – Patience, Love and Endurance – it reveals that their trust is in GOD. Paul reminded Timothy that the LORD rescued him from all situations. He may have been battered and bruised but rescued.

It seems to me that there was an element of hope in Paul’s statement that GOD could come to his aid even as he faced death. But whether or not he was rescued, he had fought the good fight and was pressing toward the finish line. He knew what awaited him because he had been to the third heaven – the first heaven is where the birds and clouds are, the second heaven is where the sun, moon, planets and galaxies are and the third heaven is where GOD is.

Paul told Timothy that false teachers and teachings would grow worse. These false teachers not only deceived others but they deceived themselves such that they cannot discern truth. This is the danger in sitting under false teachers. It is like the frog in the water. Put a frog in hot water and it will jump out but place the frog in cold water and gradually turn up the heat and the frog will remain and be cooked.

How can a Christian discern false teachers and teachings? Having the gift of discernment is one way. Knowing the Bible equips you to know truth. Ask GOD to reveal truth to you and to help you discern HIS Word. Often, when you hear a false teaching Spiritual alarms go off and you think something is just not right. That is the Holy Spirit warning you, so pay attention and check out what has been said against what the Bible has to say about it. Beware of those who teach a feel good Christianity. This is not to say Christians are to go around with long faces. Christians experience the joy of abiding in CHRIST. They are on a firm foundation of salvation through CHRIST. They build upon the foundation of CHRIST but are aware that they will face difficult times. They have the assurance that in good times or bad CHRIST is right there with them through thick and thin.

Let’s read 2 Timothy 3:14-17: (Study Scripture)
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing those from whom you learned, 15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God[2] and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Paul had told Timothy about false teachers and he had to make sure that he did not compromise his faith. He was to focus upon the fundamentals of his faith in CHRIST as confirmed in the scripture and lived by those involved in his life. He was to keep his eyes focused upon the truth and not to allow these false teachings to cause him to question his own faith in CHRIST.

Paul told him that he knew that both his mother and grandmother had taught him the scripture as a child. He was to stay focused on the scripture because the scripture had been and would continue to be his source of Spiritual reality and comfort during troubling times.

In essence, Paul was telling Timothy, you know that the scripture revealed CHRIST from Genesis to Malachi and all prophecy concerning CHRIST was fulfilled. You can trust and rely upon the scripture. Plus you know my witness and the witness of the other apostles how CHRIST fulfilled the scripture. Therefore, scripture will be your anchor, so do not neglect the study of scripture because all scripture is inspired by GOD and good/profitable for:

- For teaching – Scripture has been proven to be GOD’S Word because it is accurate, therefore it is worthy of being taught and used as a guide to live by. It is worthy for instruction and leads to salvation through CHRIST. It reveals the path Christians need to follow.

- For rebuking – Because it is truth it convicts of sin or wrong doing. It brings to light the areas where we miss the mark in living for GOD and in relationship with others. It identifies problems that need attention as the Christian journeys down the path of life.

- For correcting – Scripture reveals our sin and how to get back into right standing with GOD through confession, repentance and forgiveness. It shows the Christian where he got off the path and how to get back on the path.

- For training in righteousness – The scripture shines GOD’S light into our lives and helps us to maintain our relationship with GOD. It shows the Christian how to stay of the path and obedient serve GOD.

- So that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
The word “complete” means just that, lacking nothing, fully equipped to obediently serve GOD as led by the Holy Spirit.

Study of the Bible is a vital part of Spiritual growth. Study is one thing but it is vital to put into action what we study, as led by the Holy Spirit.

I repeat the questions I posed earlier. Is reading and studying the Bible mundane or exciting? Do you read it to check it off that you have read it or do you read it so that it will transform your life and for you to grow Spiritually? The purpose of Bible study is to transform our lives not just to increase our knowledge.

I do not like to read a book twice or see most movies twice. I know years ago after I committed my life to CHRIST, I read the Bible and thought well that is that. So I read other Christian books. The thought crossed my mind to read the Bible again. So I began reading some of the scripture I had read but very quickly, this thought crossed my mind, “Gee, I know I read this before but I did not see what I am seeing now.” I have found that reading and studying GOD’S Word is exciting and that it is truly the living Word of GOD because it is as relevant today as the day it was written.

Christians today face persecution and false teachers. It will likely get worse. Having the scripture hidden in our hearts will sustain us when we face difficult times and will be valuable to us in discerning truth from error. Blatant error is obvious but subtle error can creep into our lives, if we are not careful. Know the truth because the truth will set you free.

Growing Spiritually is a natural part of living for CHRIST. Focus on getting to know HIM by studying the Bible, prayer and obediently serving HIM. This builds our
relationship with HIM and Spiritual growth is a natural result. Blessings.

- Learn from fellow Christians who have gone through difficult times. (Follow Good Examples)

- Expect difficult times, learn from them and look upon them as opportunities for Spiritual growth.

Bible Study – Spiritual Growth – Connect – September 4, 2011

This is a new series of study entitled “Balanced Spiritual Growth.”
Our scripture is 1 Corinthians 12:12-18; 21-26 and Psalm 133:1-3.

This is a four (4) week study:

Our lesson this week is “connect” which focuses on the importance of Christian community connecting to one another. Christian community provides fellowship, nurturing, nourishing, training, teaching, building each other up, encouraging one another, comforting and caring to name a few attributes of community. The common connection is the indwelling Holy Spirit through the miracle of rebirth through faith in CHRIST.

Our next four (4) lessons are connect, grow, serve and go focus on Spiritual growth. What does Spiritual growth mean? How do we grow Spiritually?

How did we grow physically from a baby to whatever age we are now? We all had a beginning. When the sperm united with the egg, a miracle occurred. We were conceived and growth began. We were born physically. What was important? We had to receive the proper nourishment and care. When we were born, we breathed and life became self-sustaining as long as someone took care of us in this stage of our existence. In the formative years, someone took care of us. Growth had been genetically engineered into our system but we needed proper nourishment, exercise, care, love, training, encouragement and the list goes on. Our desire was to grow physically. Most, if not all of us, periodically measured to see how tall we had grown. Many homes still show the marks on the wall or door frame where we grew up that show our physical growth. Although we wanted to grow, we did not have to worry each day whether or not we were growing. It was important that we ate right, exercised and used our brain. Growth was automatic for most. I know some folks have growth problems and need certain medicines.

So how does this relate to Spiritual growth? It is much the same. When a person believes that CHRIST died for his/her sins, accepts HIM as his/her Savior, he/she is conceived Spiritually. He/she is born into the family of GOD. The Spiritual growth process begins as a Christian.

Christians need nourishment which is reading and studying the Bible, praying to GOD and exercising by putting their faith into action as led by the Holy Spirit. New Christians are first fed the milk of GOD’S Word and as they grow and mature Spiritually they are fed the meat of GOD’S Word. Every Christian is at various stages of Spiritual growth. Chronological age is immaterial in relating to Spiritual growth and maturity. There are many of us who have been Christians for many years and still babies in CHRIST and have to be fed with milk.

What are some of the things that stunt our Spiritually growth? Many allow the flesh to rule their bodies. The rule of the flesh in our lives feeds our body’s junk food and causes us to be Spiritually lazy. Thus, we do not develop Spiritually. We may have gotten upset or mad at a pastor or fellow Christian and concluded that Christianity was not for us and stopped our Spiritual nourishment.

The Holy Spirit, within, prompts us to do better but it is like a diet. Most of us start out doing great but it soon gets old, boring and dull. It is because we have decided to live the Christian life in our own strength and we will fail. So what is the solution?

You likely guessed it. It is yielding your will to GOD. You need to allow GOD through the Holy Spirit to control your life. It is getting to know GOD by building and maintaining an intimate, loving relationship with CHRIST. You cannot know GOD unless you first know CHRIST. When you have the right relationship with CHRIST, you do not struggle to grow Spiritually. You allow HIM to live through you. Your part is to be available – LORD here I am use me as YOU see fit. Then don’t fret if HE does not use you immediately. Continue to focus on your relationship. When the moment is right HE will use you.

When you focus upon building and maintaining the relationship, your Spiritual growth comes naturally. Spiritual growth is balanced and strong when the Holy Spirit leads and guides you. GOD equips HIS children to obediently serve HIM by giving them HIS power, as manifested through Spiritual gifts. Spiritual gifts are given to minister to the living body and to others as led by the Holy Spirit.

The Apostle Paul gives us examples of some of these gifts in our background scripture.

Let’s read 1 Corinthians 12:1-11: (Background)
Diversity of Spiritual Gifts
1 About matters of the spirit:[1] brothers, I do not want you to be unaware. 2 You know how, when you were pagans, you were led to dumb idols—being led astray. 3 Therefore I am informing you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are different activities, but the same God is active in everyone and everything.[2] 7 A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person to produce what is beneficial: 8 to one is given a message of wisdom through the Spirit, to another, a message of knowledge by the same Spirit, 9 to another, faith by the same Spirit, to another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another, the performing of miracles, to another, prophecy, to another, distinguishing between spirits (Discernment), to another, different kinds of languages (Tongues), to another, interpretation of languages (Tongues). 11 But one and the same Spirit is active in all these, distributing to each one as He wills.

Verse 11 is very clear. GOD gives to whom HE chooses. Christians can desire certain gifts but it is GOD’S decision who receives a gift or gifts. It is HIS power or gift that is manifested through Christians for the purpose of ministry, as HE directs. Gifts are used in unity with the living body. Each part (A Christian who has a gift) is dependent upon all the other parts (Other Christians who are gifted) and all these parts depend upon the one part (The Christian who has a gift) – quid pro quo. Let’s explore this a little deeper.

Let’s read 1 Corinthians 12:12-18:
Unity Yet Diversity in the Body
12 For as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body—so also is Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14 So the body is not one part but many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I’m not a hand, I don’t belong to the body,” in spite of this it still belongs to the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I’m not an eye, I don’t belong to the body,” in spite of this it still belongs to the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But now God has placed the parts, each one of them, in the body just as He wanted.

At the moment of salvation, a Christian is not only born into the family of GOD but he/she becomes a vital part of the living body of believers, the true church. Each Christian receives one or more Spiritual gifts at the moment of salvation. I have found that some gifts are temporary. They are available at the point of need. Other gifts are available for longer periods of time. It is vital that those through whom GOD manifests HIS gifts be obedient to HIS commands. Take Moses as an example. GOD told him to strike the rock with his staff for water. Later, GOD told him to speak to the rock for water but Moses disobeyed and struck the rock with his staff. Water came out of the rock but Moses lost out because of his disobedience.

Paul used the human body to help the Roman Christians better understand how the living body functions. In essence, he said, take a look at your own human body. It is the same regardless of your race, nationality or whether you are a slave or free.

The body has many parts but they all work in harmony and unity with each other for the good of the body. Each part has a specific function that is vital and important to the body. You have parts that are visible but you also have parts that are not readily visible. These invisible parts are vital and necessary for the function of the body.

What are these invisible parts? Some say Paul was referring to our private parts but I believe it was more than that. The human body has the stomach, heart, lungs, liver, gallbladder, kidneys, nerves, blood vessels, arteries, muscles, glands and the list goes on, which are not visible but are vital and necessary to the body. You don’t see these parts but you sure need them for the body to function. He then used the visible parts to make his point.

Dr. Henry Blackaby has a wonderful illustration about the necessity for unity in his book “Experiencing God” published by LifeWay Press, One LifeWay Plaza, Nashville, TN 37234-0175. He has a drawing of a person walking down a railroad track. As far as the eye could see there was no train. But the feet tell the person that they feel a vibration that feels much like a train is coming. The eyes say there is No train because I can see all the way down the track and I do not see a train. Then the ears say to the person, I hear the sound of a train coming. But the eyes say again, I can see far ahead and I cannot see a train. The problem was that the train was coming from behind the person. Unity is vital and trusting one another is also vital to function as a living body.

This is a wonderful example of a dysfunctional body of believers. Those who are gifted alert the body of a potential problem. A strong person in that body cannot see the potential problem and chooses to ignore what others are telling him/her. The living body must function in unity and pay attention to others who are telling it what they are sensing. This is where those who have the gift of discernment can evaluate what has been brought to light and determine whether or not the matter needs to be explored further.

In the living body all Christians are gifted such that the body functions in unity and harmony to accomplish GOD’S plan. Every Christian is gifted by GOD to minister. This is regardless of what others think of the gift a person has been given. There is no such thing as bickering over whose gift is more important because they are all vital to the implementation of GOD’S plan for that living body.

Let’s read 1 Corinthians 12: 21-26:
21 So the eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” nor again the head to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, all the more, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are necessary. 23 And those parts of the body that we think to be less honorable, we clothe these with greater honor, and our unpresentable parts have a better presentation. 24 But our presentable parts have no need [of clothing]* . Instead, God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the less honorable, 25 so that there would be no division in the body, but that the members would have the same concern for each other. 26 So if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

So how does this scripture relate to the living body of believers? GOD equips each Christian with at least one (1) Spiritual gift for the purpose of ministering to the living body. You, as a Christian, may be visible or hidden in the living body. Whatever gift or gifts you have been equipped with are vital to the efficient function of the living body.

Are you using your gift or gifts? Are you ministering within the living body? My guess most will say, no. This is why America is losing Spiritual ground. Most brick and mortar churches have failed to be led by the Holy Spirit. Why? Many church leaders are set in their own way. Tradition is a plague in many churches. Church leaders want to run things like they want or fear bucking tradition. It is sad to say that many church leaders do not know what being led by the Holy Spirit means. Are they Christians? Yes! Many are afraid of the living body being led by the Holy Spirit for fear that a radical event will occur within the body e.g. people will begin speaking in tongues or prophesying or many other reasons. They might lose their control and power.

To allow the Holy Spirit to lead a church is risky because some can get caught up in the emotion and the desire to seek the manifestation of the Holy Spirit rather than quietly serving. In the true living body, all serve whether or not they have a visible or invisible gift. The goal is to obediently serve GOD to accomplish HIS plan naturally as led by the Holy Spirit. It is not being ostentatious. Power can corrupt and lead Christians away from the mission. It is important for Christians to be Spiritually mature in order to stay focused on GOD’S mission and plan.

There is an excellent book “Natural Church Development” written by Charles A. Schwartz, which focuses on the Spiritual health of the body of believers, the church. A Spiritually healthy body of believers, the church, will be a Spiritually healthy growing, both physically and Spiritually, body of believers.
Paul referred to various parts of the human body to show diversity, yet they are in unity and harmony because they are members of the body. This is GOD’S desire for the true church. The true living church is filled with Spiritually diverse Christians functioning in unity and harmony with each other to serve GOD. The parts are diverse but in harmony and unity because they are all being directed by the head of the body, who is CHRIST. All the diverse parts, visible or hidden, noble or not, work together in unity and harmony as led by the indwelling Holy Spirit. Such a radical change in a church must come from a desire of the living body to be led by and function according to the leadership of the Holy Spirit. Such a change needs to occur naturally beginning with the leadership of the body. Some leadership may need to step aside and allow new leadership, as directed by the Holy Spirit, to take their place in order to implement change.

Let’s read Psalm 133:1-3:
Living in Harmony
A Davidic • song of ascents.
1 How good and pleasant it is when brothers can live together! 2 It is like fine oil on the head, running down on the beard, running down Aaron’s beard, on his robes.[1]3 It is like the dew of Hermon[2]falling on the mountains of Zion. For there the LORD has appointed the blessing— life forevermore.

This was a Psalm written by David. He expressed the joy of unity and harmony. He describes harmony as fine oil running from the head to the beard and dripping onto Aaron’s robe. Oil was used in anointing kings, high priests or to honor a special person. Spiritually speaking, oil was a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Dew is water and JESUS is the living water. Water refreshes and nourishes living things. Water came from Mount Hermon was the primary source of water for the Jordon River. The water flowed to Jerusalem to quench thirst. JESUS came to quench Spiritual thirst and to anoint believers with the Holy Spirit.

David was expressing the absolute peace that flows over those who are filled with the presence of the LORD when they are in complete unity and harmony with GOD through CHRIST and with those who share faith in GOD. Have you ever experienced the presence of GOD in your life? Is CHRIST real to you? Do you live in unity and harmony with your brothers and sister in CHRIST?

The Holy Spirit connects the family of GOD to each other through the miracle of rebirth. Are you connected to fellow Christians in unity and harmony? If not, why not? Ask CHRIST to reveal why. Blessings.
