God's Will - Remaining Faithful - Matthew 26:36-46 and 1 Peter 4:12-14 - August 30, 2009

Sunday School Lesson – God’s Will – Remaining Faithful – August 30, 2009

This is our final lesson in our series of study entitled “Finding and Following God’s Will.”

Our scripture is Matthew 26:36-46 and 1 Peter 4:12-14, 19.

We began our study and learned that it is GOD’S will for all people to accept CHRIST as their SAVIOR. This is ground zero. GOD gives each person the freedom to choose CHRIST or not. Many people reject the idea that a loving GOD would not accept people on other terms such as good works, living a moral life, etc. JESUS said in John 14:6:
6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

People can argue with gravity and can devise methods to defy gravity but in the end gravity always wins. GOD gives every human the right to chose. HE presents the need for salvation to every person and they chose. If they reject CHRIST, they assume the consequences, which is eternal death for that decision.

Once people become believers through CHRIST, GOD’S desire is for all believers to live for HIM and obediently serve HIM in their everyday activities. Some believers are called or asked by GOD to work for HIM on special projects or in certain areas of ministry. All believers are called to obediently serve GOD because they know the truth and are the light of the world and the salt of the earth to those who are lost.

Believers are to share what they have with others as led by the HOLY SPIRIT.

It is GOD’S desire for all believers to have such a relationship with HIM that they “naturally” respond to HIS calling. Obedient children respond “naturally” when their parent asks them to do something. They may ask a question but their desire is to please their parent. They trust their parent. It is a natural response because of their relationship with their parent. GOD wants each believer to have a trusting, obedient relationship with HIM.

When believers have the right relationship with GOD, they may test the request because they want to verify the will of GOD but they do not run from GOD. There are times when a believer does not have to question the call because he/she knows it is from GOD and is according to HIS will and purpose. He/she responds “naturally.”

Our study today focuses on remaining faithful to the will of GOD until it is finished. Our scripture focuses on the night JESUS was betrayed. Some of the events preceding our scripture were: JESUS had washed the feet of the disciples, HE had instituted and observed what we refer to as the LORDS’ Supper, revealed to HIS disciples that HE would be betrayed and told Peter that he would deny HIM before the cock crowed. Judas had left the last supper or Passover Meal to betray JESUS by leading the soldiers to HIM and identifying with a kiss so the soldiers could arrest HIM. JESUS needed to go to a quite place to pray.

JESUS was called to fulfill GOD’S plan to redeem mankind. It was vital that everything went according to GOD’S plan and purpose. Was JESUS trying to get out of it or was HE asking the FATHER if there was any other way for HIM to be betrayed other than by Judas? Was this the right time or was Satan trying to deceive? We know that Satan tempted JESUS at the beginning of HIS ministry to take a short cut to redeem mankind. We know that JESUS was 100% human and was HE fighting with HIS flesh nature in these final moments? HE was tempted in all ways as we are. Such a struggle with HIS flesh would allow HIM to know how believers struggle to confirm that unfolding events are according to GOD’S will. We do not know. We can only speculate. The bottom line is that obeying GOD’S will is often not easy. Let’s examine our scripture.

Let’s read Matthew 26:36-46:

36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane,[10] A garden east of Jerusalem at the base of the Mount of Olives; Gethsemane = olive oil press and He told the disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 Taking along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is swallowed up in sorrow[11] Or I am deeply grieved, or I am overwhelmed by sorrow; Ps 42:6,11; 43:5 —to the point of death.[12] Lit unto death Remain here and stay awake with Me.” 39 Going a little farther,[13] Other mss read Drawing nearer He fell facedown and prayed, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He asked Peter, “So, couldn’t you[14] You = all 3 disciples because the verb in Gk is pl stay awake with Me one hour? 41 Stay awake and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, “My Father, if this[15] Other mss add cup cannot pass[16] Other mss add from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.” 43 And He came again and found them sleeping, because they could not keep their eyes open.[17] Lit because their eyes were weighed down 44 After leaving them, He went away again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more.
45 Then He came to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting?[18] Or Sleep on now and take your rest. Look, the time is near. The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up; let’s go! See—My betrayer is near.”

JESUS knew that the time had come for HIM to give HIS life to redeem mankind from sin and death through HIS shed blood. The forces of evil were rampant. This was the most critical period of time for all mankind and things had to go exactly according to GOD’S plan and purpose. This led JESUS to prayer.

During a crisis period is when believers must pray and ask others to pray along with them. JESUS was teaching HIS disciples then and believers now the importance of prayer. GOD, the FATHER held the final decision regarding the course of events and HE had to be consulted.

JESUS was 100% human and yet 100% divine. Was JESUS experiencing HIS flesh crying out with a desire to live as HE approached this critical moment in HIS earthly life? We need to keep in mind that JESUS was tempted in all ways as we are, yet without sin. JESUS had encountered severe temptation in the desert at the beginning of HIS ministry (Matthew 4:1-11). Satan tried to bargain with CHRIST by offering HIM a short cut to redeem mankind. Was JESUS checking with The FATHER to make absolutely certain that the unfolding events were according to HIS plan and purpose? When we are tempted, JESUS knows what it is like. That is why HE is our advocate before the FATHER when Satan accuses us before the FATHER.

To speculate on all the dynamics JESUS was facing is impossible because there are many.

Our scripture focuses on the need for prayer, especially when believers are doing the will of GOD. These are the unfolding events:

JESUS had asked HIS eleven (11) disciples to go with HIM to the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives, which was east of the Jerusalem. HE needed a special place to pray because HIS time had come. HE asked eight (8) of HIS disciples to wait in a certain area and then HE asked Peter, James and John, known as the inner circle, to go with HIM farther. Was JESUS setting up barriers to make certain that HE had answers to HIS prayers before HE was arrested?

JESUS confided in the inner circle that HE was very distraught, troubled or overwhelmed with sorrow about what was about to happen. They likely did not understand what HE was saying but HE had told them at the last supper or Passover meal that HE would be betrayed.

We need to keep in mind that what we refer to as the last supper was to commemorate the Passover meal which was eaten the night before GOD delivered the Israelites from the bondage of Egyptian slavery as described in Exodus, Chapter 12. The blood from the slain lamb had to be placed over the doorpost of the Israelite home for the death angel to Passover that home and not kill their first born son or first born cattle. The blood of the lamb protected them. JESUS instituted a new covenant for delivering mankind from the slavery of sin and death by the shedding of HIS blood. HE instituted this new covenant at the last supper when HE referred to the “cup” of wine as symbolizing HIS blood and the bread as HIS body.

HE asked the inner circle to watch, which meant to stay awake and alert. JESUS went farther to pray to the FATHER. HE was still in hearing distance because HIS inner circle heard HIS prayer and reported what HE said. It was a teachable moment for HIS disciples and for believers in the future.

JESUS wanted to verify whether or not there was any other way for the FATHER’S will to be accomplished – verse 39. What did JESUS mean by “this cup?” JESUS had just instituted what believers know as the LORDS Supper. JESUS made it clear that the shedding of HIS blood was vital and necessary for the salvation of all believers. The shedding of HIS blood established an eternal covenant between GOD and mankind. HE paid the price or penalty GOD required to remove the barrier of sin for mankind. GOD, through JESUS, did HIS part to redeem mankind. However, each person must do his/her part by making a decision to accept or reject the death and resurrection of JESUS. JESUS died for the sins of each person who accepts that HE died for his/her sins. HE died where we should have died.

JESUS ended this first prayer with “Not as I will but as YOU will.” That is always the key when doing GOD’S will, not my will but YOUR will.

JESUS returned to find Peter, James and John asleep. JESUS admonished Peter. JESUS seemed to be speaking directly to Peter and urged him to stay awake and this time added “pray.” Peter was about to encounter a traumatic event in his life. He would deny JESUS not once, not twice but three times. The difference between Peter’s denial of JESUS and Judas’ betrayal of JESUS was their response to what each had done. Peter wept and was sorry. Peter repented of his sin and GOD forgave him. Peter went on to become a faithful disciple. Judas fully realized what he had done, confessed his sin, returned the 30 pieces of silver but he took matters into his own hands. He likely felt unworthy to seek forgiveness, so he killed himself.

JESUS urged Peter to pray. When the HOLY SPIRIT leads believers to pray it is always for a very good reason. We never know what lies ahead but HE does. So when prompted to pray, always pray. A person’s name may pop into your mind that you have not thought of in years. Pray for him/her. You may never know why you are being prompted but GOD does.

JESUS prayed a second time. Here JESUS’ prayer seemed to reveal that HE understood there was no alternative, the die was cast and HE told the FATHER, “YOUR will be done.”

HE returned to find the inner circle sleeping. HE left and HE prayed for the third time, repeating what HE had already prayed. I think HE still prayed that Judas would change his mind, which he could have done up to a few moments before he identified HIM. If he had changed his mind the soldiers could still arrest HIM. But this is not what happened.

After the third prayer it seemed that JESUS knew HE had done all HE could and that the events would unfold according to GOD’S plan. HE woke up the inner circle and announced that HE had been betrayed.

Remaining faithful to accomplish the will of GOD is difficult. Prayer is the engine that keeps believers in touch with GOD and keeps them focused during times of uncertainty and on completing the will of GOD. We know that Satan can use our flesh and other things to lure us away from doing or completing the will of GOD. JESUS did not face this time in HIS ministry alone. HE asked HIS disciples to join with HIM in prayer. Believers must do the same.

Let’s read 1 Peter 4:12-14, 19:

12 Dear friends, when the fiery ordeal[21] Lit the burning arises among you to test you, don’t be surprised by it, as if something unusual were happening to you.[22] 1 Pt 1:6–7 13 Instead, as you share in the sufferings of the • Messiah rejoice,[23] Ac 5:41 so that you may also rejoice with great joy at the revelation of His glory. 14 If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ,[24] Ps 89:50–51; Ac 5:41; 1 Pt 2:20 you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on[25] Isaiah 11:2; Ac 5:41; 1 Pt 2:20 you.[26] Other mss add He is blasphemed because of them, but He is glorified because of you.
19 So those who suffer according to God’s will should, in doing good, entrust themselves[31] Ps 31:5 to a faithful Creator.

The Apostle Peter wrote First Peter about 62-64 A.D. Peter was writing to fellow believers who were facing or about to face persecution. Peter opened with a cordial, friendly greeting. The persecution of Christians began during the rule of Nero.

Peter writes of “the fiery ordeal.” This likely alludes to testing, like a quality control test to evaluate the quality of a metal. Metals were tested by fire to check for their purity and to strengthen them. A fiery ordeal tests the genuineness of believer’s faith, proves them to be genuine and strengthens their relationship with GOD through CHRIST.

Peter cautions believers then and believers today not to be surprised when circumstances come along that test them. As believers, testing is part of serving CHRIST and it is an honor because it shows that they bring Glory to the LORD and shows they are following in HIS foot-steps.

Remain faithful.

Running from God's WIll - Jonah - August 23, 2009

Sunday School Lesson – Running from God’s Will – August 23, 2009

This is lesson three (3) in our series entitled “Finding and Following God’s Will.”

Our scripture is Jonah 1:1-3, 17; 3:1-5, 10; 4:5-11.

Jonah wrote the Book of Jonah about 785-760 BC. Jonah’s candid revelation of his story has blessed many through the ages. The events regarding the great fish and Jonah were an important example JESUS used in reference to HIS death and resurrection. JESUS referred to Jonah in Matthew 12:39-41 - 39 But He answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish three days and three nights,[14] Jnh 1:17 so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah’s proclamation; and look—something greater than Jonah is here!

Just as GOD delivered Jonah from sure destruction from the belly of the great fish, GOD, through the passion of CHRIST delivers all who believe in HIM from the sure destruction of sin and death.

Jonah was a prophet who prophesied during the reign of King Jeroboam II from 793-753 BC. This was mentioned in 2 Kings 14:25: 25 It was he who restored Israel’s border from Lebo-hamath as far as the Sea of the • Arabah,[15] Nm 34:3–9 according to the word the Lord, the God of Israel, had spoken through His servant, the prophet Jonah son of Amittai from Gath-hepher.

Let’s read Jonah 1:1-3, 17:

Jonah’s Flight
1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai:[1] Jnh 3:1; 2 Kg 14:25 2 “Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because their wickedness has confronted Me.” 3 However, Jonah got up to flee to Tarshish from the Lord’s presence. He went down[2] Jnh 1:5; 2:6 to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish.
He paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish, from the Lord’s presence.

17 [6] Jnh 2:1 in Hb Then the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in[7] Lit in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.[8]
Mt 12:40

The city of Nineveh was about 500 miles northeast of Israel. It was located in what we know today as northern Iraq, near the current city of Mosul.

For Jonah to go there, he needed to go by land, not by sea. Jonah went in the opposite direction and booked passage on a ship bound for Tarshish. Jonah boarded the ship and they set sail.

GOD knew the wickedness of the people of Nineveh. In the events Jonah recorded we see the heart of GOD and HIS compassion toward those wicked people and a rebellious prophet. GOD called HIS Prophet Jonah. We know that Jonah heard the call of GOD because he responded and went in the opposite direction.

We have to keep in mind that Jonah wrote the book of Jonah. He admits that he was trying to flee from the presence of GOD. He likely had a false notion that GOD was confined to a geographical area and he could run away from HIM. He soon learned that GOD is omnipresent. GOD intervened and turned him around.

This is an important lesson for all believers. Believers often think they can run or hide from or ignore GOD. When GOD calls, it is wise for believers to obediently respond. GOD loves all people and HIS desire is for non-believers to be given the opportunity to repent of their sins and receive salvation. As believers they need to confess their sins and disobedience.

Jonah boarded the ship bound for Tarshish, went to the bottom of the ship and fell into a deep sleep. Was this a relief sleep? Like “wow, I escaped from GOD.” It wasn’t long until GOD caused a terrible storm to come up on the sea. The storm raged and all onboard the ship cried out to their god for the storm to cease but it didn’t. The captain woke Jonah up and gave him the news, the ship is about to sink. The crew believed someone onboard had angered their god/GOD. They cast lots and Jonah was identified as the culprit. The cat was out of the bag. Jonah confessed what he had done. Through his confession, he had an opportunity to witness to the crew about the true GOD of Israel. This had to make a profound impression on all aboard that ship because they had never seen or been in such a storm as they were experiencing.

Once Jonah confessed his sin, he instructed the ship’s crew to throw him overboard. The crew did not want to be responsible for killing an innocent person. They tried to row to shore but GOD was in control and they could not. The pagan crew had more compassion for Jonah than Jonah had for the Ninevites. The crew reluctantly threw him overboard to watch a great fish swallow him and the sea immediately calm down.

I think these events had to confirm in the hearts of those sailors that the GOD of Israel was the true GOD of all gods. Especially, if they later learned that Jonah was found preaching in Nineveh after being swallowed by the great fish.

What a story these sailors had to tell. GOD used them to spread the knowledge of the event and the power of the true GOD of Israel. Most likely the story of Jonah preaching in Nineveh, after being swallowed by the great fish, reached the ears of the sailors, as well as those who had heard their story. What a powerful witness about the GOD of the Israelites.

Even though GOD’S Prophet Jonah was headed in the wrong direction, GOD had a plan and purpose for him. HE knew Jonah would go in the opposite direction. In fact, GOD likely chose Jonah for that very reason because Jonah could witness to the sailors on the ship. In turn, the sailors would have a powerful story to tell others about the true GOD of Israel. It was also a powerful story that related to the future death and resurrection of JESUS.

Nineveh was a wicked and powerful city located in Assyria and it became the capital of the Assyrian Empire. Jonah did not like the Assyrians and hoped GOD would destroy them.

There is another important lesson to be learned. GOD does not give up on those HE calls or those who need HIS message of repentance and salvation. Even though believers may run from HIM and HIS calling, GOD’S love, care, grace and provision for them never changes. Jonah’s heart was calloused toward the Ninevites.

These events revealed the nature and character of GOD toward wicked people who are willing to repent and toward a rebellious prophet. GOD never gives up on HIS children and those called according to HIS plan and purpose. Therefore, never give up on GOD and know that HE forgives and restores to the uttermost. HE keeps on forgiving and restoring as often as we ask. That is what grace is all about. We, as humans, get tired of forgiving. However, GOD never tires because HE knows what is in store for those who love HIM and obediently serve HIM.

Jonah believed he was justified in disobeying GOD because he believed GOD would have compassion on the Ninevites and not destroy them. He stated this in Jonah Chapter 4:2 (This is a flash back because this prayer is after Jonah preached to the Ninevites.) - 2 He prayed to the Lord: “Please, Lord, isn’t this what I said while I was still in my own country? That’s why I fled toward Tarshish in the first place.[1] Jnh 1:3 I knew that You are a merciful and compassionate God, slow to become angry, rich in faithful love, and One who relents from [sending]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. disaster.[2] Ex 34:6; Nm 14:18; Neh 9:17
So Jonah took matters into his own hands. But it wasn’t long until GOD intervened and let him know WHO was BOSS. GOD extends HIS mercy and grace to all.

Jonah’s prayer, while he was inside the big fish, was recorded in Chapter 2. GOD heard Jonah’s prayer of repentance and his vow to do as GOD commanded. I get the impression that Jonah had the notion that a person could only communicate with GOD when he/she was at or near the temple. GOD taught Jonah a valuable lesson about prayer. GOD hears our cry regardless of where we are or the circumstances we are in. HE hears but how HE responds is up to HIM. In this case, once Jonah repented, GOD ordered the great fish to vomit him up onto the shore. We see the authority GOD has over all things - The weather and the great fish so far.

GOD allows us have a fit of anger or rebel against HIM. But HIS desire is that we learn from it and come closer to HIM as we realize that we have been disobedient.
The great fish deposited Jonah safely on the shore just in the right spot for him to head for Nineveh. Just because Jonah rebelled against GOD, GOD’S plan and purpose for Jonah did not change. HE had the message the Ninevites needed to hear and a prophet that needed to confront his attitude toward GOD and others. GOD is a GOD of second, third, fourth, etc. chances.

Let’s read Jonah 3:1-5, 10:

Jonah’s Preaching
1 Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time:[1] Jnh 1:1 2 “Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach the message that I tell you.” 3 So Jonah got up and went to Nineveh according to the Lord’s command. Now Nineveh was an extremely large city,[2] Or was a great city to God a three-day walk.[3] Probably = the time required to cover the city on foot 4 Jonah set out on the first day of his walk in the city and proclaimed, “In 40 days Nineveh will be overthrown!” 5 The men of Nineveh believed in God.[4] Or believed God [5] Mt 12:41 They proclaimed a fast and dressed in • sackcloth—from the greatest of them to the least.

10 Then God saw their actions—that they had turned from their evil ways[9] 2 Kg 17:13; 2 Ch 7:14; Jr 18:11 —so God relented from the disaster He had threatened to do to them. And He did not do it.

The great fish deposited Jonah onto the shore. Reports of other people being swallowed by a big fish or a whale tell that their skin was bleached white. I don’t know whether or not Jonah’s skin was bleached but if it was, he had to be a sight for sore eyes. But if his skin had been bleached, it would have likely made his message more compelling to the Ninevites.

Nineveh was a large city. It took three (3) days to walk across it.

The message GOD had Jonah to deliver was simple, “In 40 days Nineveh will be overthrown!” But it was effective and Jonah seems to be delivering the message without fear for his own life. The Ninevites were cruel, wicked people. Did Jonah’s near death experience in the great fish result in him not fearing death and allowed him to deliver the message of GOD with power and authority? We do not know for sure, we can only speculate.

The Ninevites immediately repented along with their king. GOD saw their hearts and decided not to destroy them. GOD is a GOD of hope and second chances. GOD changed HIS mind because the Ninevites repented.

We know that JESUS used the event of Jonah to relate to HIS death and resurrection. The resurrection of JESUS is the ultimate sign of the love of GOD for all people. The message of JESUS is for all. Those seeking HIM are to ask HIM to forgive them of their sins, believe that HE died for their sins and ask HIM to come into their lives. This is the miracle of rebirth in the spirit, which results in eternal life for all who believe.

You would think that a prophet of GOD would rejoice that GOD had spared the people. But how did Jonah take the news? We have already seen how he reacted in
Jonah 4:2 – He was angry.

Let’s read Jonah 4:5-11:

5 Jonah left the city and sat down east of it. He made himself a shelter there and sat in its shade to see what would happen to the city. 6 Then the Lord God appointed a plant,[3] = either a castor-oil plant or a climbing gourd and it grew up to provide shade over Jonah’s head to ease his discomfort.[4] Lit to deliver him from his evil Jonah was greatly pleased with the plant. 7 When dawn came the next day, God appointed a worm that attacked the plant, and it withered. 8 As the sun was rising, God appointed a scorching east wind. The sun beat down on Jonah’s head so that he almost fainted, and he wanted to die. He said, “It’s better for me to die than to live.” 9 Then God asked Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?” “[Yes,]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. ” he replied. “It is right. I’m angry enough to die!” 10 So the Lord said, “You cared about the plant, which you did not labor over and did not grow. It appeared in a night and perished in a night. 11 Should I not care about the great city of Nineveh, which has more than 120,000 people[5] Or men who cannot distinguish between their right and their left, as well as many animals?”

Jonah was prejudiced against the Ninevites, even those who repented. When GOD decided to spare Nineveh, you would think that Jonah would have been pleased. But in Jonah 4:1-3 we find: 1 But Jonah was greatly displeased and became furious. 2 He prayed to the Lord: “Please, Lord, isn’t this what I said while I was still in my own country? That’s why I fled toward Tarshish in the first place.[1] Jnh 1:3 I knew that You are a merciful and compassionate God, slow to become angry, rich in faithful love, and One who relents from [sending]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. disaster.[2] Ex 34:6; Nm 14:18; Neh 9:17 3 And now, Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.” 4 The Lord asked, “Is it right for you to be angry?”

Jonah’s response was, in essence, “If you are not going to destroy the Ninevites, then destroy me.” Now that is anger. The LORD asked Jonah in verse 4, “Is it right for you to be angry?” GOD wanted Jonah to examine his own heart and attitude toward the Ninevites. GOD had compassion on the repenting Ninevites, as well as Jonah.

We know from history that Nineveh was destroyed many years later in 612 BC.

Even though the people repented, Jonah believed GOD would still destroy Nineveh. He likely thought their repentance was either not sincere or that not enough people had repented. Whatever Jonah thought, he wanted a ringside seat to watch the destruction of Nineveh. So he found a safe spot and positioned himself where he could see all the action. He made himself a shelter, which did not provide enough shelter. But GOD gave him additional shelter form a plant. (GOD has authority over plants. Scholars believe the plant was a castor plant which grows quickly.) Jonah liked what GOD had done for him and thought that GOD provided the plant as a sign of approval. Jonah had compassion on the plant but no compassion for the Ninevites.
Jonah waited until the dawn of the next day. He was still waiting to watch the city be destroyed but instead, the plant that provided him shade was destroyed by a worm. (GOD has authority over the worm.) Then GOD sent a scorching hot east wind, likely a sirocco which can raise the temperature 15-20 degrees quickly. (GOD has authority over the weather.)

GOD has authority over the environment, plants and animals. The only area that HE has chosen not to have complete authority is over mankind. HE chose to give people the freedom of choice. HE often puts up roadblocks to head us in the right direction.
GOD was teaching Jonah a lesson. HE used the plant to help Jonah to see that he was more concerned with his comfort than he was for salvation of others. GOD wanted Jonah to see others as HE saw them. Jonah had more compassion for the plant than he did for the people of Nineveh. GOD was leading Jonah to think about the importance he placed on his desires and comfort versus people. GOD cares for every living thing.

The Book of Jonah is about the obedience of a great fish, a plant, a worm, the weather, repentant people and a reluctant prophet. In spite of the prophet’s rebellion, the job got done. We see the compassion of GOD toward sinners and HIS compassion and forgiveness for repentant sinners and a rebellious prophet.

GOD wanted Jonah to know that HE cared for the 120,000 people plus the animals of Nineveh. It seems that GOD was saying to Jonah, “If you don’t care about people, think about the animals.” This should have caused Jonah to pause and consider his attitude toward the Ninevites. The Ninevites did not have the spiritual discernment to be able to distinguish their right from their left or right from wrong. GOD knew they needed a messenger and GOD chose the reluctant Jonah.

It seems that Jonah finally learned what GOD was trying to teach him because he candidly recorded the events of his saga in the Book of Jonah. GOD wanted to teach Jonah about HIS grace toward all people and even toward a rebellious prophet.

Jonah records the final question GOD leaves with him in verse 11, “Should I not care?” GOD does care and so should HIS people care for others. Never forget it because HE cares for you regardless of what you may have done. HE cares for all people.

The WIll of God Versus Signs - Judges 6, Matthew 16 - Romans 12 - August 16, 2009

Sunday School Lesson – Will of GOD VS Signs – August 16, 2009

This is lesson three (3) in our series entitled “Finding and Following God’s Will.”

Our scripture is Judges 6:1-40; Matthew 16:1-4; Romans 12:1-2.

Our study is about asking GOD to prove Himself or confirm something with a sign.

I know when I was growing up and considering spiritual matters, I thought about GOD proving HIS existence or confirming something I had requested by some sort of sign. As I journeyed through life HE did prove HIS existence. I recall when our children were born, I thought about the human body and how wonderfully made it is and how from the coming together of a sperm and an egg produced a baby that could feel, see, hear and nurse. The baby had been breathing embryonic fluid for nine (9) months and in a matter of seconds it would go from breathing fluid to breathing air. Wow, that still boggles my mind. I looked at the world and the order of the universe. To consider that all of this came into being by random probability was beyond my comprehension. All that I saw and all that had been provided for mankind’s existence – seeds, fruits, medicines from herbs, plants, trees, air in just the right mix to sustain life was mind boggling. There was only one conclusion, there had to be a Master Designer and Sustainer. So I concluded that GOD did exist. But how could I further test and verify the existence of GOD?

I looked around to see what sort of sign I would request from GOD to prove Himself. While looking, I tried to find a surefire sign that could not be duplicated by some physical phenomena. I could not find such a surefire sign or test. It took me until I was in my thirties before I really knew GOD and CHRIST. I had to get to the end of all my exploring and seeking to give up on my effort to understand my relationship with GOD through CHRIST. Then I said, in essence, LORD I give up, take me as I am and make out of me what YOU want me to be. I need your strength to live the Christian life. In that instant, HE did and I have known that I am HIS child through the miracle of rebirth. Has my journey been easy since then? No. But I have known that I belong to HIM and my desire is to serve HIM. I still get in the way. My flesh rises up but HE lets me know when that happens.

We have to be very careful when demanding that GOD confirm something using a sign because Satan can slip in and give us something we perceive as a sign. I can hear some say, “Well, if you ask GOD, why would HE allow Satan to deceive you?” Good question – simply to teach us to know HIS leading. Yes, GOD can confirm matters with a sign but most often HE confirms them in our hearts. It is a knowing and an assurance that it is GOD’S call to a certain request.

As we study our various scriptures, it should become clearer that GOD is GOD and HE can confirm HIS call to us anyway HE chooses. It could depend upon our personality and level of understanding. The main thing GOD wants to do when HE calls believers is to communicate with them. Most often, HIS confirmation comes through HIS Word, a knowing in our heart, HIS still small voice or all three.

Let’s read Judges 6:1-40(Focus verses:14-16, 36-40):

1 The Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. So the LORD handed them over to Midian seven years, 2 and they oppressed Israel. Because of Midian, the Israelites made hiding places for themselves in the mountains, caves, and strongholds. 3 Whenever the Israelites planted crops, the Midianites, Amalekites, and the eastern peoples came and attacked them. 4 They encamped against them and destroyed the produce of the land, even as far as Gaza. They left nothing for Israel to eat, as well as no sheep, ox or donkey. 5 For the Midianites came with their cattle and their tents like a great swarm of locusts. They and their camels were without number, and they entered the land to waste it. 6 So Israel became poverty-stricken because of Midian, and the Israelites cried out to the LORD. 7 When the Israelites cried out to Him because of Midian, 8 the LORD sent a prophet to them. He said to them, “This is what the LORD God of Israel says: ‘I brought you out of Egypt and out of the place of slavery. 9 I delivered you from the power of Egypt and the power of all who oppressed you. I drove them out before you and gave you their land. 10 I said to you: I am the LORD your God. Do not fear the gods of the Amorites whose land you live in. But you did not obey Me.’ ”

This is a lot of scripture but it is important that we see the extent GOD goes to get the attention of HIS people. America is no different. The Israelites would turn their backs upon GOD. GOD would punish them. They would cry out to GOD and return to HIM but then stray away from HIM. Then the cycle repeated itself.

We also can see the nature of GOD at work.

In verses 1-10, GOD had allowed the Israelites to suffer at the hands of Midianites, Amalekites, and the eastern peoples. The Israelites cried out to HIM and HE sent a prophet (who is not named) who reminded them of GOD’S care for their forefathers. Then the prophet told them, in essence, GOD had not changed and HE was still as powerful as always. The problem was they had not obeyed HIM. They had abandoned the worship of the true GOD of Israel and worshipped the false gods of others. This is why HE allowed them to suffer at the hands of others. It was to get their attention, for them to see and acknowledge their sin, repent and restore their relationship with HIM. GOD was the same. HE had not changed or moved and HE had not given up on them. But it was all about choice. Now that they had cried out to HIM and HE responded, what were they planning to do? As we continue, we see that GOD does HIS part.

The LORD Calls Gideon

11 The Angel[1] of the LORD[2] came, and He[3] sat under the oak that was in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash, the Abiezrite. His son Gideon was threshing wheat in the wine vat in order to hide it from the Midianites. 12 Then the Angel of the LORD appeared to him and said: “The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.” 13 Gideon said to Him, “Please Sir,[4] if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened?[5] And where are all His wonders that our fathers told us about? They said, ‘Hasn’t the LORD brought us out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has abandoned us and handed us over to Midian.” 14 The LORD[6] turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and deliver Israel from the power of Midian. Am I not sending you?”[7]15 He said to Him, “Please, Lord, how can I deliver Israel? Look, my family is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s house.” 16 “But I will be with you,” the LORD said to him. “You will strike Midian down [as if it were]* one man.” 17 Then he said to Him, “If I have found favor in Your sight, give me a sign that You are speaking with me. 18 Please do not leave this place until I return to You. Let me bring my gift and set it before You.” And He said, “I will stay until you return.” 19 So Gideon went and prepared a young goat and unleavened bread from a half bushel[8] of flour. He placed the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot. He brought them out and offered them to Him under the oak. 20 The Angel of God said to him, “Take the meat with the unleavened bread, put it on this stone, and pour the broth [on it]* .” And he did so. 21 The Angel of the LORD extended the tip of the staff that was in His hand and touched the meat and the unleavened bread. Fire came up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread. Then the Angel of the LORD vanished from his sight. 22 When Gideon realized that He was the Angel of the LORD, he said, “Oh no, Lord GOD! I have seen the Angel of the LORD face to face!” 23 But the LORD said to him, “Peace to you. Don’t be afraid, for you will not die.” 24 So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it Yahweh Shalom.[9] It is in Ophrah of the Abiezrites until today.

Who is the Angel that meets with Gideon? Bible scholars believe it was CHRIST. We see that GOD calls a specific person to carry out HIS plan and purpose. Gideon was busy threshing wheat in the bottom of a wine vat. Normally, Gideon would thresh grain on top of a hill so the wind would separate the chaff form the wheat. But due to the precarious conditions in the land, Gideon was afraid to be out in the open threshing grain. He was hiding. GOD greeted him, “As mighty warrior.” Gideon felt inadequate, believed that the true GOD of Israel had abandoned them and he questioned his heavenly visitor. If GOD is with us, why are we suffering? We see that Gideon had the background and knowledge of GOD protecting and delivering his ancestors but he blamed GOD for their current plight. Notice that GOD did not answer his question directly. GOD did see that Gideon was honest with HIM and told Gideon to take what faith he had and go deliver the Israelites from the Midianites. Gideon shared the facts that he was from the weakest family. He felt inadequate. This is often a very good sign because when we feel inadequate, we must rely upon the leadership of GOD. GOD wants those HE calls to respond according to HIS plan.

I can see GOD saying to Himself, Yes. This is exactly what I want. I want a person to respond exactly as I lead him. I want all the Israelites to know it is MY power that delivers them. GOD often calls the weak to awesome tasks because when it is complete, all stand in awe of the awesome GOD WHO has revealed HIS power.

GOD assured Gideon that HE would be with him. He would defeat the entire mighty Midianite army as if it was one person. GOD brought the impossible down to the possible. Gideon likely knew that he could hold his own with anyone of the Midianites but the entire army? GOD told him to consider the entire army as one person because HE would be with HIM and HE would be HIS strength.

Gideon asked for a sign. He left and returned to the sight with meat and flour. These were offerings to the LORD. GOD told him to place the meat and unleavened bread on a rock. Then GOD gave him a sign. HE extended the tip of HIS staff and fire came up and consumes the meat and unleavened bread. Then GOD vanished. WOW!!! This was a real sign that he had encountered GOD. But was this enough?

Gideon Tears Down a Baal Altar

25 On that very night the LORD said to him, “Take your father’s young bull and a second bull seven years old. Then tear down the altar of • Baal that belongs to your father and cut down the • Asherah pole beside it. 26 Build a well-constructed altar to the LORD your God on the top of this rock. Take the second bull and offer it as a • burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah pole you cut down.” 27 So Gideon took 10 of his male servants and did as the LORD had told him. But because he was too afraid of his father’s household and the men of the city to do it in the daytime, he did it at night. 28 When the men of the city got up in the morning, they found Baal’s altar torn down, the Asherah pole beside it cut down, and the second bull offered up on the altar that had been built. 29 They said to each other, “Who did this?” After they made a thorough investigation, they said, “Gideon son of Joash did it.” 30 Then the men of the city said to Joash, “Bring out your son. He must die, because he tore down Baal’s altar and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.” 31 But Joash said to all who stood against him, “Would you plead Baal’s case for him? Would you save him? Whoever pleads his case will be put to death by morning! If he is a god, let him plead his own case, because someone tore down his altar.” 32 That day, Gideon’s father called him Jerubbaal, saying, “Let Baal plead his case with him,” because he tore down his altar.

Gideon obediently responded to GOD’S commands. Was GOD building Gideon’s faith? Yes. Gideon had to remove the barrier that separated the Israelites from GOD. The gods they had been worshiping had to come down. This was a major step for Gideon and Gideon’s father. GOD was preparing Gideon and the Israelites for the next step. Gideon’s father told the people to let Baal defend himself. This was a test between the powers of Baal versus the power of the true GOD of Israel. GOD builds trust and confidence as HE leads us.

The Sign of the Fleece

33 All the Midianites, Amalekites, and Qedemites gathered together, crossed over [the Jordan]* , and camped in the Valley of Jezreel. 34 The Spirit of the LORD enveloped Gideon, and he blew the ram’s horn and the Abiezrites rallied behind him. 35 He sent messengers throughout all of Manasseh, who rallied behind him. He also sent messengers throughout Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, who [also]* came to meet him. 36 Then Gideon said to God, “If You will deliver Israel by my hand, as You said, 37 I will put a fleece of wool here on the threshing floor. If dew is only on the fleece, and all the ground is dry, I will know that You will deliver Israel by my strength, as You said.” 38 And that is what happened. When he got up early in the morning, he squeezed the fleece and wrung dew out of it, filling a bowl with water. 39 Gideon then said to God, “Don’t be angry with me; let me speak one more time. Please allow me to make one more test with the fleece. Let it remain dry, and the dew be all over the ground.” 40 That night God did [as Gideon requested]* : only the fleece was dry, and dew was all over the ground.

Gideon asked for another sign to confirm his call. GOD granted his request. Gideon knew that he was about to push the limit with GOD. But he asked GOD to verify his call again. GOD granted his request.

Our next scripture will help us focus on the ultimate sign GOD has given all people.

Let’s read Matthew 16:1-4:

1 The • Pharisees and • Sadducees approached, and as a test, asked Him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered them: “When evening comes you say, ‘It will be good weather because the sky is red.’ 3 And in the morning, ‘Today will be stormy because the sky is red and threatening.’ You[1]know how to read the appearance of the sky, but you can’t read the signs of the times.[2] 4 An evil and adulterous generation wants a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of[3]Jonah.” Then He left them and went away.

The Pharisees and the Sadducees did not see eye to eye on religious matters but they teamed up in an effort to get rid of JESUS. These religious leaders wanted JESUS to give them a sign from heaven to prove to them WHO HE was. But GOD had already sent prophets and had given them HIS Word that provided all the information about the coming Messiah necessary for them to discern and confirm the true Messiah. These two groups of religious leaders knew the scripture better than anyone. If any group should know all the details of the coming of the Messiah, this is the group. They were trying to define the Messiah according to their terms. They would decide whether or not JESUS was the true Messiah, not the scriptures or the signs and wonders they had likely seen or heard about resulting from the ministry of JESUS. They wanted HIM to prove Himself to them. The only person JESUS had to please was HIS FATHER. The religious leaders request was not coming from a genuine desire to know the truth but coming from hearts of unbelief.

We see by JESUS’ response that was not the right question to ask HIM. They could discern the weather based upon what they saw in the sky but they could not read the scriptures and relate them to what was happening around them to discern that HE was the promised Messiah.

So what is the sign of Jonah?

JESUS explained the sign of Jonah in Matthew 12:39-41 - 39 But He answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish three days and three nights,[14]so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah’s proclamation; and look—something greater than Jonah is here!

It is the death and resurrection of JESUS. JESUS tells us all that HIS death and resurrection are all the signs anyone needs to know that HE is the SON of GOD. HE gave HIS life that all who believe in HIM will be saved from sin and eternal death.

When a person believes in HIM, he/she is washed clean of all sin, is born into the family of GOD, receives eternal life and is indwelt by the HOLY SPIRIT, WHO confirms and assures him/her of salvation. The empty tomb is the proof that JESUS is the Messiah. It is our choice to believe it or reject it.

Let’s read Romans 12:1-2:

A Living Sacrifice

1 Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship.[1] 2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

The Apostle Paul is writing to the Christians in Rome. Romans 12:1 is a transition verse between Paul explaining justification by faith in JESUS and how to live in the will of GOD through CHRIST. The word “therefore” is the transition word between these two concepts. He mentions three (3) things Christians can do.

First, he related the flesh or body of believers to the Jewish sacrificial system. The Jews offered animals as a sacrifice for their sins under the old system. He challenged Christians to do no less than what CHRIST did for them. They are to offer their bodies as living sacrifices. He is urging them, in essence, to die to self by presenting the most precious thing they have, their bodies, completely to GOD. Live completely for the LORD.

The second challenge for Christians is for them not to live as the world wants them to live. Do not let the world lure you away from serving the LORD. So how do you do that?

The third challenge is by being transformed, dying to self, by the renewing of your minds to obediently serve GOD in all areas of your lives. It carries the idea of metamorphosis. A beautiful butterfly has to go through metamorphosis from a cocoon to a butterfly. I heard a story, years ago, about a person watching the activity in a cocoon. The person thought they would help the process along and help the struggling butterfly by peeling away some of the cocoon. The person soon discovered that the emerging butterfly was deformed. It is the struggle that fully develops the butterfly. When the struggle is cut short, the butterfly is not fully completed.

Christians struggle in life. When a believer struggles are orchestrated by GOD, a beautiful butterfly emerges from those struggles.

Paul concluded verse 2 that by following these three (3) challenges, believers will discern the will of GOD for them. It is all about relationship. Apart from the right relationship with our LORD, it is impossible.

When believers are in right relationship with CHRIST, they are in the will of GOD. JESUS tells us to seek first the kingdom of GOD. GOD allowed Gideon to take small steps as HE led him to the greater task of delivering the Israelites from the mighty armies oppressing them. But GOD and Gideon had to build a trusting relationship. Gideon was honest with GOD. In my opinion that is step one. Be honest with GOD and tell HIM of all your fears, hang-ups, disappointments, concerns, etc. to get them into the open as why you do not serve HIM. That will be a life changing beginning. Do it now. GOD did not make us for time but for eternity. Blessings to all as you journey with our LORD.

Keep in mind that your salvation is just the beginning of the process. Hide GOD’S Word in your heart because it brings forth growth and when you spread GOD’S Word it produces results.

Isaiah 55:10-11:
10 For just as rain and snow fall from heaven, and do not return there without saturating the earth, and making it germinate and sprout, and providing seed to sow and food to eat, 11 so My word that comes from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please, and will prosper in what I send it [to do]* .”

God's Will - Finding Your Place - Auguast 9, 2009

Sunday School Lesson – Have You Found Your Place? – August 9, 2009

This is lesson two (2) in our series entitled “Finding and Following God’s Will.”

Our scripture is Exodus 35:30-36:1; Jeremiah 1:4-8; Colossians 3:16-17.

Most often believers equate doing the will of GOD in terms of a calling to some form of ministry in the church or a church related career. GOD calls every believer to full time Christian service. HE calls some to be factory workers, mechanics, doctors, lawyers, public servants, flipping burgers, teachers, bus drivers, police officers, pastors, missionaries, artist, writers, waitresses, waiters, busboys, garbage collectors, pilots, plumbers, builders, electricians, clerks, sports, business men/women and the list goes on.

In the Great Commission, JESUS admonishes believers to go into the entire world and spread the gospel of CHRIST. We are individuals and physically limit but collectively, believers are ubiquitous. Believers go into all parts of the world every day and come in contact with a host of people every day. Believers are the light of the world and the salt of the earth. Believers are light and salt. They should let their lights shine and live their lives such that their lives will be savory so others will seek to know their source of strength, assurance and happiness they have. Believers need to obediently serve the LORD where they are and as HE provides the opportunity.

Let’s read Exodus 35:30-36:1:

30 Moses then said to the Israelites: “Look, the Lord has appointed by name Bezalel (Beh ZAL eh el) son of Uri (yoo RIGH), son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.
31 He has filled him with God’s Spirit, with wisdom, understanding, and ability in every kind of craft
32 to design artistic works in gold, silver, and bronze,
33 to cut gemstones for mounting, and to carve wood for work in every kind of artistic craft.
34 He has also given both him and Oholiab (uh HOH lih ab) son of Ahisamach (uh HIZ uh mak), of the tribe of Dan, [the ability]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. to teach [others]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. .
35 He has filled them with skill to do all the work of a gem cutter; a designer; an embroiderer in blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and fine linen; and a weaver. They can do every kind of craft and design artistic designs.

Exodus 36:1:

1 Bezalel (BENZ uh lehl), Oholiab (oh HOH lih ab), and all the skilled[1]wise of heart people are to work based on everything the Lord has commanded. The Lord has given them wisdom and understanding to know how to do all the work of constructing the sanctuary.” Lit

GOD had given special instructions to Moses for the construction of the tabernacle. The tabernacle was to be the place where GOD would reside when HE came to earth and it was to be constructed according to GOD’S plan.

GOD in turn called Bezalel and Oholiab to build the tabernacle. Since Bezalel is mentioned first, he was likely in charge of the project. Notice in verse 31that GOD first fully equipped Bezalel by filling him with HIS SPIRIT. Then GOD equipped him with the necessary abilities and skills to do the job.

Let’s fast forward to Pentecost. GOD sent the HOLY SPIRIT to indwell every believer to equip and empower them for service. As believers, we have all been filled with the HOLY SPIRIT and equipped to serve our LORD according to HIS plan and purpose. Even though we are fully equipped, we still have the right to choose. Bezalel and Oholiab built the tabernacle for GOD to come to earth to fellowship and guide HIS people. Because of the passion and obedience of CHRIST, all believers have the presence of GOD in their lives 24/7. HE has called, equipped and empowered all believers to serve HIM in an infinite number of ways.

As we continue to study our scripture, we see that GOD called a variety of people (craftsmen, designers and artists) to perform special tasks to accomplish HIS plan and purpose. Those HE called, He also called to teach, mentor and train others to learn these various crafts and skills. GOD calls and equips people with special talents, skills, passions, and gifts to serve HIM. The longer we serve HIM, using our God-given abilities, the more efficient, proficient and skilled we are in them. It is GOD’S desire for believers to glorify HIM in whatever their calling.

We see in this scripture that even though GOD had called Moses to be the leader of the Israelites, GOD called others to complete what HE had revealed to Moses. Moses delegated the construct to others, but GOD held him accountable to see that the job got done. When people are gifted to do a task, it often looks easy to others and they think we can do that. Then when we get the opportunity, we find it is not as easy as we thought.

Bezalel and Oholiab were called as laymen into ministry for GOD. In our next scripture, we will see the calling of the Prophet Jeremiah. Even though these are different ministries, they are all called, equipped and empowered by GOD to accomplish HIS plan and purpose.

Let’s read Jeremiah 1:4-8:

4 The word of the Lord came to me:
5 I chose you before I formed you in the womb;[1]
Ps 139:13–16 I set you apart before you were born. I appointed you a prophet to the nations.
6 But I protested, “Oh no, Lord God! Look, I don’t know how to speak[2] Ex 4:10 since I am [only]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. a youth.”
7 Then the Lord said to me: Do not say: I am [only]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. a youth, for you will go to everyone I send you to and speak whatever I tell you.[3] Dt 18:18
8 Do not be afraid of anyone, for I will be with you to deliver you. [This is]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. the Lord’s declaration.

Jeremiah’s call to ministry came about 626 BC, which was the 13th year reign of Josiah, King of Judah. Judah was deteriorating, which Josiah realized. Judah had four (4) kings after Josiah. Judah’s fall to the Babylonians came were during the reigns of Jehoiakim and Zedekiah, both Josiah’s, son. These were very difficult times for the Jewish people and it was during these days that Jeremiah was trying to preach and serve GOD. GOD called Jeremiah to ministry but Jeremiah balked by telling GOD that he could not speak because he was a youth. Jeremiah was likely in his late teens or early twenties.

GOD taught Jeremiah a valuable lesson. When GOD calls HE also prepares, equips and empowers. Even though GOD knew that Judah would continue to deteriorate and fall to Babylon, HE still called Jeremiah to preach to the people. GOD never gives up on those HE loves but always gives everyone an opportunity to repent and change the course of their destiny. Jeremiah could also see where Judah was headed. GOD’S message through Jeremiah was a message of judgment unless you change. This brings to my mind, “Where is America headed?” Our nation was founded on Christian values and principles. But now we allow minority religions to dictate. 9/11 got our attention but how quickly we have forgotten and returned to our old ways. America is a Christian nation and we need to take a stand. Other religions are free to practice their religion but our government should not alter our freedom to express the Christian faith publicly in schools, ballgames, or as our faith leads. Are our national and state leaders governing – under the true GOD or according to the flesh?

Jeremiah questioned his calling and his ability. The LORD revealed to the Prophet Jeremiah that he was chosen and set apart before he was conceived and formed in the womb. His decision to serve the LORD was not a whim or his own decision but GOD had chosen him. Even though GOD had chosen Jeremiah, he had to choose to serve GOD, which he did. One of my favorite verses of scripture – Ephesians 1:4 - 4 for He chose[3]Rm 11:5–71 Co 1:26–311 Th 1:42 Th 2:131 Pt 1:1–2 us in Him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in His sight.[4]3–14 In love[5] In His sight in love ; ; ; ; Vv. are 1 sentence in Gk. Or

GOD has a plan for every believer. All believers have the right to choose. The foreknowledge of GOD allows HIM to know how a person will choose. Many choices have consequences, both good and bad. Because of poor choices, believers may miss out on a blessing GOD had intended for them to receive. GOD’S plan and purpose will go forward as HE planned but without our involvement because of our choice. Believers never lose their salvation. They may lose the reward and blessing.

Jeremiah was uncertain and uptight about what lay ahead of him. GOD made it clear to Jeremiah that HE did not have to worry or be concerned because HE would prepare, equip and empower him for the task HE had called him to. Whether a believer is young or old, he/she should never balk at what GOD has asked him/her to do. GOD provides the strength, the ability and the opportunity to accomplish HIS plan and purpose. It will be a process of building trust and confidence with GOD; it is all about building the right relationship with GOD.

Let’s read Colossians 3: 16-17:

16 Let the message about the Messiah dwell richly among you, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, and singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

The Apostle Paul urges the Christians in Colossi to keep the message of CHRIST in their hearts. When the message of CHRIST dwells in believers richly, it keeps believer’s minds focused upon the rich heritage of eternal salvation though CHRIST. Such an assurance is encouraging to believers, as well as, fellow believers. A heart that dwells upon CHRIST produces expressions of joy, wisdom, praises and singing. Such genuine expressions are contagious and influence others.

The Apostle Paul made it clear to the believers in Colossi, no matter what they do – whether they speak (word) or respond to a need (in deed), honor GOD. Paul admonished believers to reflect on what CHRIST had done for them and to share their spiritual knowledge with each other. CHRIST saved believers from certain eternal death because of their sins. CHRIST gave HIS life to pay the debt for sin so that all who believe in HIM are set free to obediently serve GOD out of hearts of gratitude. A grateful heart is a heart full of joy and the knowledge of the presence of GOD in his/her life. This is awesome.

The will of GOD is for believers to know that HE has equipped them with certain God-given abilities and gifts, called them to use those abilities and gifts and to honor HIM as they use these abilities and gifts to obediently serve HIM.

Do you know what GOD has called you to do? If not, pray and ask HIM to reveal it to you. Likely, you will see that you have been doing the will of the FATHER all along.

The three (3) main themes in our study are:

- Use Your God-given Abilities and gifts to serve GOD and others as HE leads.

- Open Yourself to a Divine Call. Keep in mind it is not your ability but GOD’S.

- Honor GOD in Whatever You Do. Stay focused upon HIM, let HIS Word dwell in you richly. Let the joy of the LORD spill over to others you encounter in life.

Blessings to all as you read and study.
