Respect - Find Out What It Means - Matthew 5:33-48 - October 28, 2007

Sunday School Lesson – Respect – Find Out What It Means – October 28, 2007

This is the last lesson in Matthew Chapter 5. Our study will continue in Matthew Chapters 6 and 7 during November.

Matthew Chapter 5 captured JESUS teaching HIS disciples both then and now about being an ideal disciple. JESUS knew that HIS disciples had been exposed to distorted teaching from the religious leaders and HE wanted them to know the truth about how GOD judges our actions and intents of our hearts. Notice JESUS words at the beginning of each these sections - "You have heard ---." They heard it or were taught by the religious leaders of that day.

We as well have formed opinions regarding Christianity. Are they based upon truth or distortions of the truth?

JESUS began Matthew Chapter 5 with the very foundation of the spiritual qualities GOD desires for all Christians, which we call the Beatitudes. JESUS stated the ideal and then contrasted the ideal against human reality. HE wanted to build the Kingdom of GOD using genuine, spiritually mature living stones.

Upon the foundation of the Beatitudes, JESUS added the fact that believers are salt and light - influence. As citizens of GOD’S Kingdom we have a responsibility to properly represent HIS Kingdom while we live in the kingdom of the world. Then HE added a dose of reality regarding believers human nature; the attitude of the heart. In our lesson today, HE added another dose of reality; believers dealing with those who abuse authority. This includes believers who take an oath knowing they cannot fulfill the oath. JESUS knew that these were a few examples of what can cause us to loose our saltiness or dim our light. That is why we must know ourselves and not let the actions of others cause us to loose our influence in HIS Kingdom.

When we see how GOD will judge the heart, we all fall woefully short of GOD’S standard. That is why we need a SAVIOR. Whereas we fall short, CHRIST is sufficient. If you think you can measure up by your own efforts and strength, then read Matthew Chapter 5 again. I am glad I have CHRIST.

JESUS summed up HIS teaching with the statement in verse 48, be perfect. We began our series of study with the qualities of the ideal disciple and end it with - be perfect. In between these two (2) statements is the reality of who we are and human nature. It is very frustrating to me, as a believer, to see GOD’S standard for judging mankind and it must have been frustrating to HIS disciples as well.

So how do we overcome this frustration and reality? Only by giving our lives to CHRIST and allowing HIM to live through us. It is all about our relationship with our LORD. Living the life as outlined by CHRIST is impossible without the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT.

JESUS told HIS disciples what GOD expected early in HIS earthly ministry. HE knew that HE would be measured by HIS FATHER’S measuring stick of perfection. JESUS was 100% human and 100% Divine. HE was telling HIS disciples, watch ME and see how I measure up to GOD’S standard. HIS destiny was the cross, ultimate insult and humiliation. HE had to endure all the things HE stated in the Beatitudes. Even when HE hung on the cross, HE came face to face with HIS humanity. GOD, HIS FATHER, had to turn HIS face from HIM as our sin was placed upon HIM. GOD is HOLY and cannot look upon sin. JESUS knew that HIS FATHER had turned HIS face from HIM, when HE cried out as recorded in Matthew 27:45-46:

45 From noon until three in the afternoon[21] Lit From the sixth hour to the ninth hour darkness came over the whole land.[22] Or whole earth 46 At about three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Elí, Elí, lemá sabachtháni?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken[23] Or abandoned Me?”[24] Ps 22:1

Even when JESUS thought GOD had abandoned HIM (JESUS), HE (JESUS) trusted HIM (GOD) with HIS human life. JESUS gave HIS life that we might have life eternal and be fully restored to fellowship with GOD through HIM.

There are at least two (2) times in our lives when we as humans will have a choice whether or not we will trust our lives to GOD. (1) When we first have the opportunity to accept JESUS as our SAVIOR (2) Even though we are Christians, all believers choose whether or not we will allow GOD full control of our lives and being completely obedient to GOD. The Apostle Paul says it best in Galatians 2:19-20:

19 For through the law I have died to the law that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; 20 and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the flesh,[10] The physical body I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

For some Christians completely yielding their lives to CHRIST comes at the moment they receive CHRIST as their SAVIOR. For other Christians making JESUS LORD of their lives comes later in their spiritual journey. Unfortunately some Christians never get to the point of yielding their lives to CHRIST. They are saved but do not experience the awesome experience of getting to know JESUS in an intimate loving relationship and being obedient to HIM.

Preparing believers to be living stones in the Kingdom of GOD while they are here upon earth is the process of sanctification and the work of the HOLY SPIRIT.

As we study the following scripture, notice that JESUS began each section with something like “You have heard.” Think about what you have heard being taught over the years and compare it to what JESUS is saying. JESUS wants every believer to know the truth. The truth is heavy. Keep in mind that we cannot keep all that JESUS is saying without the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT and the process of sanctification. Sanctification takes time and the key is we must first seek the relationship with CHRIST and get to know HIM. Not to get to know about HIM but to really know HIM.

Let’s read Matthew 5:33-37:

Tell the Truth.

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to our ancestors,[15] Lit to the ancients You must not break your oath, but you must keep your oaths to the Lord.[16] Lv 19:12; Nm 30:2; Dt 23:21 34 But I tell you, don’t take an oath at all: either by heaven, because it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, because it is His footstool; or by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King. 36 Neither should you swear by your head, because you cannot make a single hair white or black. 37 But let your word ‘yes’ be ‘yes,’ and your ‘no’ be ‘no.’[17] Say what you mean and mean what you say Anything more than this is from the evil one.

GOD wants HIS children to be trustworthy. When we are trustworthy because of our relationship to GOD through CHRIST, we do not need to go beyond a simple “YES” or “NO”. When we begin to embellish an oath, we move the oath from ourselves to the things mentioned in the oath. Our word must be our bond.

The religious leaders used holy sounding words such as heaven, earth, Jerusalem or their head to avoid using the name of GOD. When they took an oath without using GOD’S name, they did so knowing they either had no intention of keeping the oath or they had a way out of the oath. JESUS knew this and tied heaven, earth and Jerusalem to GOD. Even when they swore upon their head they needed to realize that GOD is the one WHO controlled even the color of their hair. Swearing on ones head carried the idea of their head being cut off if they did not fulfill their oath. Much like as children we would say, cross my heart and hope to die. Only to learn when someone did not fulfill his or her part of the bargain would say “I had my fingers crossed.”

I have to admit, when people begin to say what dedicated Christians they are and they want something from me or want to sell me something; I begin to think scam or con. People often use Christianity to get what they want and to take advantage of good hearted people. When you are burned a few times, you become calloused. It took me a long time to not be as calloused but I am still cautious.

JESUS said do not take an oath. We know that in a court of law, we have to take an oath to swear to tell the truth and nothing but the truth so help us GOD. Our judicial system ties the oath to GOD. Bible scholars agree that JESUS’ statement does not apply to a court of law.

JESUS is saying live your life such that when you say “YES” or “NO” that is all that is needed. You can be believed.

Let’s read Matthew 5:38-42:
Go the Second Mile
38You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.[18] Ex 21:24; Lv 24:20; Dt 19:21 39 But I tell you, don’t resist[19] Or don’t set yourself against, or don’t retaliate against an evildoer. On the contrary, if anyone slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 As for the one who wants to sue you and take away your shirt,[20] Lit tunic = inner garment let him have your coat[21] Lit robe, or garment = outer garment as well. 41 And if anyone forces[22] Roman soldiers could require people to carry loads for them. you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and don’t turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

The Old Testament taught equal punishment or equal retaliation to meet the crime. I sometimes think we should still do this today when I hear of heinous things done to others.

So what is JESUS saying when HE says “don’t resist an evildoer?” HE is not saying if your life is in danger just to let it happen. The Bible is clear we are to defend ourselves and our loves ones. We are to fight in war.

If a right-handed person slaps a person on his or her right cheek that means the person doing the slapping would have slapped him or her using the back of his or her right hand. The intent of the person doing the slapping is not to hurt the person but to insult or humiliate them. The hurt is more emotional than physical. It bruises our ego.

Most of us have likely used the phrase when someone said something harsh to us, “That was a slap in the face.” So JESUS is addressing an insult. HE is not condoning abuse or for a person to tolerate abuse. HE is talking about “road rage” or “life rage” caused by others getting in your face and taking up your space. WOW!!! This hurts as I write this.

This next statement is especially difficult. JESUS says if someone is going to sue you for your shirt, then give him or her your coat. This is a poor person being sued for his or her undergarment. This undergarment was vital for warmth. The law tells us in Exodus 22:26-27 that a person could use their cloak or coat or outer garment for collateral but the person accepting the coat had to return it before sunset.

Exodus 22:26-27:

26 “If you ever take your neighbor’s cloak as collateral, return it to him before sunset. 27 For it is his only covering; it is the clothing for his body.[15] Lit skin What will he sleep in? And if he cries out to Me, I will listen because I am compassionate.

JESUS said if a person sues you for your shirt then give him your coat as well. This is going the extra step. This is tough but JESUS says this should be the way you should respond. We should have this attitude in our hearts towards those who would take advantage of us.

The only thought which came to mind is that GOD provides all things and you should have the attitude that GOD will take care of you.

Next JESUS addresses going the extra mile. JESUS likely had two (2) examples in mind:
(1) The king had couriers placed along the road at fixed locations. These couriers had the power to recruit travelers to do errands for the king. The traveler had no choice.
(2) A Roman soldier could demand that a Jew carry their equipment for a mile. JESUS said if you are forced to go a mile then volunteer to go an extra mile.

Even when you are forced to do something you do not want to do, then go an extra mile. In today’s world we have to be careful to emphasize that JESUS is not talking about doing weird things or sexual things. These are things that annoy us because of either the person who is doing the asking or the fact the person has the authority over us to make us do a task. We do not have a choice plus we do not like the person who is doing the asking.

Then JESUS addresses lending things or money to others. This is also tough because again in this day, we have to be very careful about lending money to others. Some will want to gamble it away, buy drugs or alcohol and the list goes on. So this is not a do it and no questions asked or not to be prudent statement. The scripture is clear that GOD will not give us something that will harm us.

I think it relates to our heart and our willingness to give, lend or let someone borrow.

Exodus 22:25 tells us not to charge interest but there is an expectation that the money will be paid back. Then there is a gift to someone who asks. A gift is not expected to be paid back.

Exodus 22:25:
25 “If you lend money to My people—to the poor person among you, you must not be like a moneylender to him; you must not charge him interest.

Again it boils down to the attitude of the heart. In our society there are check cashing places that provide a service but also take advantage of the poor.
The Bible is clear; do not charge interest to the poor. You can charge the rich interest. But who in our society gets the breaks? The rich. Maybe that is where Christians need to fill the gap.

Let’s read Matthew 5:43-48:
Love Your Enemies
43You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor[23] Lv 19:18 and hate your enemy. 44 But I tell you, love your enemies[24] Other mss add bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who[25] Other mss add mistreat you and persecute you, 45 so that you may be[26] Or may become, or may show yourselves to be sons of your Father in heaven. For He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing out of the ordinary?[27] Lit doing more, or doing that is superior Don’t even the Gentiles[28] Other mss read tax collectors do the same? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

The Old Testament tells us to love our neighbor but it does not tell us to hate our enemy. Some scholars believe the statement regarding “hate” was an interpretation of Psalm 139:21-22:

21 Lord, don’t I hate those who hate You, and detest those who rebel against You? 22 I hate them with extreme hatred; I consider them my enemies.

JESUS introduces HIS statement with “You have heard.”

The word used for love is “agape” or self-giving love that does not demand anything in return. We are to “agape” love our neighbor and our enemy. Again, the use of the word “enemy” does not mean as an enemy we would encounter in war or combat situations. But as used here “enemy” means those who insult us or use their position to make demands of us that we dislike.

Again, this is not any thing sexual or things that are wrong. But things that we may detest to do because the person requesting it may be a jerk, lazy, misusing their authority or any number of reasons.

Agape love can only come from GOD. When Christians show agape love, those around them will make the connection that such love is beyond what this world has to offer. JESUS says you will be seen as sons of GOD and it draws others to seek what you have.

All that JESUS is saying is to draw others to salvation by the lives we live as true disciples of JESUS here upon earth.

JESUS compares the attitude HIS disciples should have toward others to our heavenly FATHER’S practice toward both believers and non-believers. HE practices what HE preaches, so-to-speak. HE sends the sun and rain on the righteous as well as the unrighteous.

We naturally love those who love us, which is good. GOD says there is no reward for loving those you already love. If you want a reward in heaven then love the unlovely. That is going the extra mile. That is being the disciple that GOD wants HIS children to be.

JESUS ends HIS teaching with a challenge. Be perfect as your heavenly FATHER is perfect.

JESUS defined the qualities of the ideal disciple beginning with the Beatitudes. Then HE told HIS disciples they are light as HE is the light of the world. They are salt as HE is the salt that preserves, heals and adds zest to life. Christians are to know themselves by knowing their heart. Because from the heart comes all sorts of things both good and evil. Guard your hearts by confessing what you harbor in your heart. Do not let unhealthy thoughts find a breeding ground in your heart. What is your attitude toward others, especially those who have authority over you?

HIS heart is pure before GOD and has no hidden agenda. HE set the standard and HE will live the standard. HIS disciples witnessed HIM doing what HE has said GOD expects of a disciple. HIS destiny was the cross and HE was challenged even unto death. HE was tempted in all ways as we are but HE remained sinless.

HE encountered the cross for all mankind. The key is that we must see HIM as our SAVIOR and HE is the only solution for our sins. HIS entire life is about salvation. All JESUS is asking us to do, as we interact with people, is to live our lives such that we are positive witnesses to draw them into a saving knowledge of JESUS or a deeper walk with HIM.

Are these examples tough? Yes. They are impossible without the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT and an intimate relationship with CHRIST. Do not let this lesson discourage you but cause you to seek the relationship. Do not project to the endpoint of perfection but seek to know HIM and let HIM through the HOLY SPIRIT teach you and lead you to where HE wants you to be. Abide in HIM. Grow and mature in HIM through the relationship.

What is GOD’S goal for you as a Christian? Paul states it best in Romans 8:29: GOD wants us to be the image of HIS SON, JESUS.

29 For those He foreknew[18] From eternity God knew His people and entered into a personal relationship with them He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers.

We are 100% human and HIS desire is for us to yield our lives such that we are 100% controlled by the HOLY SPIRIT.

The Heart of the Matter - Matthew 5:21-32 - October 21, 2007

Sunday School Lesson – The Heart of the Matter – October 21, 2007

This is lesson three (3) in our series of study. Our scripture continues in the Book of Matthew 5:21-32. We began with the Beatitudes, which are qualities GOD wants every Christian to have in their lives as HIS servants. Then in last week’s lesson we discovered, as Christians, we are salt and light. GOD wants us to be pure salt and pure unobstructed light. When we have the qualities of the Beatitudes in our lives then we will be the pure salt and unobstructed light that HE wants us to be.

Since we are salt and light, HE wants us to focus on the attitude of our heart, which we will explore today. Do we have false notions or distorted concepts about how a Christian is to live and relate to others? GOD wants our hearts, attitudes and motives to be righteous.

This is all the work of the HOLY SPIRIT within every Christian. It is called sanctification. Sanctification is a process of being set aside for use by GOD and to be made saint like. GOD’S goal for every Christian is for us to be like HIS ONLY SON JESUS.

When we try to do all of these attributes in our own strength, it will not happen; plus we will be very frustrated and discouraged trying to live the Christian life in our strength. It is vital that we have a loving, intimate relationship with CHRIST. It is through this relationship that we get to really know HIM and not to just get to know about HIM. When we have the right relationship with HIM then it easy for us to trust HIM and have confidence in HIM. Then we are more inclined to allow HIM to direct our lives as HE chooses. Then it is up to HIM how we will serve HIM and not up to us. When we have the relationship, we are always in the center of HIS will.

Our part is to be wiling for HIM to direct our lives.

Know your heart.

Let’s read Matthew 5:21-26:

21 “You have heard that it was said to our ancestors,[5] Lit to the ancients Do not murder,[6] Ex 20:13; Dt 5:17 and whoever murders will be subject to judgment. 22 But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother[7] Other mss add without a cause will be subject to judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Fool!’[8] Lit Raca, an Aram term of abuse similar to “airhead” will be subject to the • Sanhedrin. But whoever says, ‘You moron!’ will be subject to • hellfire.[9] Lit the gehenna of fire 23 So if you are offering your gift on the altar, and there you remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Reach a settlement quickly with your adversary while you’re on the way with him, or your adversary will hand you over to the judge, the judge to[10] Other mss read judge will hand you over to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. 26 I assure you: You will never get out of there until you have paid the last penny![11] Lit quadrans, the smallest and least valuable Roman coin, worth 1/64 of a daily wage

JESUS deals with the attitude of the heart. This is an area every Christian must allow the HOLY SPIRIT to examine. JESUS is addressing HIS disciples in light of the teachings they have heard from the religious leaders, both current and past. HE is dispelling false notions and distortions of the truth. HE wants them to see how the FATHER looks upon the heart of mankind, so no one will be surprised on Judgment Day.

- Breaking the law includes breaking the spirit of the law.
- There are human laws to deal with certain issues, such as calling a fellow believer a “fool.” The term “fool” attacks a person’s intelligence. That believer could haul the person calling them a “fool” before the Sanhedrin. But there are areas where there is no written human law to pass judgment such as if you call a person a “moron.” This was an attack on that person’s character. This is where GOD will do the judging by the use of the term “hellfire.”
- Then there are situations involving non-believers where there is human law. When you are in this situation, try to settle the matter before you go before the judge.
- The bottom line, we as humans are accountable before man and before GOD. Man has his form of judgment and GOD has HIS. It is best to settle our accountability issues before we come before the judge, be it man or GOD.
- We are all accountable to GOD. GOD provides the way for all humans to settle accountability issues before we come before HIM. All accountability issues are settled through JESUS CHRIST but they have to be settled before we die. Just as a human judge demands the guilty party to pay the last cent owed, so does GOD.

Do you want to know how you will not be judged after your death? John 5:24 are JESUS words.

John 5:24:
24 “I assure you: Anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.

JESUS takes the ten (10) commandments to a new level. The religious leaders thought keeping the letter of the law and not the spirit of the law was all they needed to do to be righteous. But JESUS makes it clear. GOD looks upon the heart and HE expects HIS people to keep both the law and the spirit of the law.

If you are a normal, living, breathing person, it is impossible to keep the spirit of the law. JESUS would say, BINGO!!! It is impossible for you to live such a life and that is why you need HIM.

That is why we need JESUS. Whereas we all will fail to fulfill the spirit of the law through our own efforts, HE has already over come the world. HE is sinless, yet tempted in all ways as we are.

When we acknowledge HIM as our SAVIOR and learn of HIM, we see that we cannot live up to GOD’S requirements of perfection. When our sins are cleansed by the redeeming blood of CHRIST, we become GOD’S children through the miracle of rebirth. The righteousness of CHRIST becomes our righteousness when we ask CHRIST to forgive us of our sins and to come into our lives. We are going to heaven based on JESUS and what HE has done for us and not through any merit of ourselves. All Christians will be in heaven because of CHRIST.

JESUS is emphasizing matters of the heart and relates them to the final judgment of GOD. HE compares this to someone hauling a person to court that owes him a debt. Is it better to go before the judge or settle the matter between the two of you? A righteous judge will rule in a righteous manner and demand payment in full. GOD demands perfection, therefore settle your relationship with GOD before you stand before HIM. The obvious question is how can you do that while you are still on earth? JESUS is the answer. HE is the way, the truth and the light. HE is the only way to the FATHER.

If you want to take a chance using your own merits, then keep in mind that GOD requires perfection outwardly and inwardly. Can you accomplish this? I can tell you, you cannot and neither can I. But whereas you or I cannot, JESUS did and by accepting HIM as your SAVIOR, you are righteous before GOD. Righteousness means to be in right standing.

2 Corinthians 5:21 captures this perfectly:

21 He (GOD) made the One (JESUS) who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Then JESUS tells us that we must not have any barriers between us and others. The purpose of worship is to worship GOD in spirit and truth. If we know of a problem between us and our fellow Christian (brother or sister), we need to settle it before we can worship GOD in spirit and truth. It is also vital that we settle our differences with GOD. If we know of a problem between us and GOD, we need to confess it and settle it as well.

Guard your heart.

Let’s read Matthew 5:27-30:

27 “You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery.[12] Ex 20:14; Dt 5:18 28 But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye • causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to go into hell!

Again JESUS goes to matters of the heart. Many try to define lust. Some say it is a passing glance but others say it is a prolonged look at the opposite sex. The bottom line, any amount of time is a warning that our hearts are not focused upon our LORD. We need to confess even a fleeting thought. In this day of the internet, pornography is rampant and addictive. Sex sells all sorts of things in the media. We are inundated with sexy men and women. Lust applies to both women and men. Lust appeals to the flesh. We war against the flesh. The battle ground is the heart or mind. It is the gateway to action either to “say no” or “yield”. The choice is ours.

JESUS then speaks about action one should take if they have a problem controlling their desires. Does JESUS mean to mutilate the flesh? No, but HE is stressing the extent one should go to keep from sinning when a person wants to control their thought life. The gateway to our spiritual health is our heart or the mind. We are in control of our thought life and what we harbor in our hearts.

As we focus on our relationship with JESUS, through the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT, we receive power to live and think as we should. It is a constant cleansing. But even then we will sin. When we sin, we must confess our sin, repent, which means to stop doing it, and GOD will cleanse and restore our righteousness.

Keep in mind Christianity is not doing as we please but it is confession, forgiveness and grace.

Consider your actions.

Let’s read Matthew 5:31-32:

31 “It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce.[13] Dt 24:1 32 But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality,[14] Gk porneia = fornication, or possibly a violation of Jewish marriage laws causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

The religious leaders in JESUS day had become flippant regarding divorce. Some taught that if a woman did anything to displease her husband, then the husband could give her a written notice of divorce. JESUS is telling them that GOD’S view of marriage is one man married to one woman for life.

Marriage is 100%/100%. It is both working and pulling together during the difficult times in any marriage. My wife and I are about to celebrate our 49th wedding anniversary. I love her more now than ever before because we have gone through the tough times together. And believe me there have been some tough times. Most couples never try to push through these difficult times and get to see that the grass is not as green on the other side as they think or envision. I quickly add abusive situations are not to be tolerated. If counseling fails then, a very tough decision must be made. There are other situations as well that cannot be tolerated. Seek counseling from a Christian counselor.

Verse 32 is complicated. I think JESUS was trying to get them to focus on the seriousness and far reaching consequences of divorce. Don’t be so hasty to divorce. Try to work it out. It goes to the attitude of the heart. Broken relationships impact our relationship with GOD. Marriage is sacred in the eyes of GOD. GOD’S requirement for man is for him to love and honor his wife. Again, when man or woman abuse their spouse that is another matter and action must be taken.

In today’s society this is tough scripture. Our marriage relationship is just like our relationship with GOD.

GOD expects fidelity with HIM and for us not to worship other gods. GOD is jealous. Just as GOD expects us to be faithful to HIM, HE expects us to be faithful to our spouse. A simple piece of paper does not let one out of their marriage without consequences, except for adultery. If a person’s mate has committed adultery then, they have broken the unity of one flesh. Only GOD can restore that unity once severed.

When a mate has been unfaithful it takes the love of CHRIST for the hurt mate to forgive their unfaithful mate and to be willing to continue in the marriage. This, in my opinion, is true agape or CHRIST like love, when the hurt mate is willing to forgive their unfaithful mate and maintain their marriage. Only CHRIST can heal a very deep wound. It can happen and it will work and make for a stronger marriage. But the infidelity is not to be repeated. If repeated, then that shows the spouse has heart problems and trust is very difficult to be restored.

JESUS makes it clear. GOD’S intent for marriage is until death do we part.

JESUS is dealing with the matters of the heart. If we can control our thought life and not allow issues to find a breeding ground in our minds, then the actions harbored in our minds will not be carried out.

When we control what is in our hearts, then we can control our actions. GOD judges us not only by our actions but also our attitudes.

High-Impact Believers - Matthew 5:13-20 - October 14, 2007

Sunday School Lesson – High-Impact Believers – October 14, 2007

This is lesson two (2) in our series of study. Our scripture is Matthew 5:13-20. JESUS is teaching and preparing HIS disciples to fulfill the Great Commission. JESUS’ ministry has just begun and HIS mission has not been fully revealed.

JESUS began with the scripture commonly referred to as the Beatitudes, which was last week’s lesson. The Beatitudes are foundational for all Christians and represents the ideal disciple. JESUS wants all Christians to realize they are HIS representatives and have influence where ever they are in the world.

A Christian’s influence with others is intimate just as salt is intimate with food. Light is intimate with others but in a different way. We will explore JESUS’ use of salt and light as they relate to the influence of Christians in the world.

The Biblical truth in today’s lesson is that believer’s impact society for CHRIST by their influence. When Christians project the light of CHRIST, through their good works and seek to promote Godly righteousness within the society where they live, they exert influence. They may never know they are influencing others. In my opinion, the qualities stated in the Beatitudes equip us to be the influence GOD wants us to be in the world we encounter each day.

When our relationship with GOD, through the HOLY SPIRIT, produces the qualities stated in the Beatitudes, several attributes are evident in the lives of Christians:

- They know themselves
- They know their SAVIOR and LORD
- They have an intimate, loving relationship with CHRIST.
- They see others as JESUS sees them.
- The things that break the heart of JESUS, breaks their heart.
- The things that bring joy to JESUS bring joy to them.
- Are obedient to the leadership of our LORD through the HOLY SPIRIT regardless of opposition.
- They fully realize their home and dwelling place is heaven in the presence of the living GOD and serve HIM regardless of circumstances.

This is a process and cannot be achieved in one’s own strength. You must have the indwelling power and strength of the HOLY SPIRIT. But first you must have the relationship with CHRIST and let HIM be your teacher. Do not try to figure out what you are to do but maintain the relationship with HIM.

Following CHRIST is not a struggle. But it is abiding in HIM and letting HIM direct your life. Your part is to be obedient to HIM.

Let’s read Matthew 5:13:
Believers Are Salt – Preserve - Influence - Intimate
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled on by men.

Why did JESUS compare HIS disciples with salt? In that day everyone knew the value and purpose of salt. Salt was used to pay some wages, thus the term, “A man should be worth his salt.” Salt was used to preserve meat, to give flavor to meat and other foods. Salt could be used to promote healing. Salt was also used in sacrifices.

JESUS teaches, “You are the salt of the earth.” HE did not say you will become salt but that you are salt. What makes a disciple salty? JESUS. What makes salt useless? Contaminants. Other salts present in pure salt can render salt useless and taste bitter. But pure salt remains salty.

As pure salt preserves and results in food tasting good, bad salt is useless and only good to be walked on. Bad salt is useless for its intended purpose.

Pure salt makes one thirsty. JESUS wants HIS disciples to cause others to be thirsty for what they have. Too much salt is not good when making a savory dish. This is why we need the qualities of the Beatitudes in our lives to give us spiritual balance. HE must lead us as we serve HIM. Then our saltiness will be just right. HE is the Master Chef.

Let’s read Matthew 5:14-16:

Believers are light – Revealing – Dispelling - Broader

14 “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket,[2] A large basket used to measure grain but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine[3] Or way, your light must shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

JESUS then teaches, “You are the light of the world.” Again, HE does not say you might be the light of the world one day but you are the light. When we accept JESUS as our SAVIOR, HE comes into our lives. Just as HE is light, HE also imparts light. We, as Christians, reflect the light that is in us.

In verse 14, JESUS speaks about a city on a hill. Again, HE is referring to influence. A city at night with lights can be a land mark to those trying to determine direction. The city is in the distance but it does its’ job of giving comfort to those who are lost and direction to those seeking direction. Light is broadcast more widely than salt. But it is vital. Just as the light cast from a lighthouse cast’s its light over the sea to warn ships of impending danger and act as a landmark to a safe harbor, we can be a beacon to others seeking a safe harbor.

I know years ago my young son and I went spelunking with his Boy Scout Troop. That is exploring a cave and spending the night in a cave. We had a guide and several sources of light. In a cave you are dependant upon light to get you out of a cave unless you have other means of finding the way out.

We were working our way around a cave wall that was about twenty (20) feet high with jagged rocks below. We had to maneuver around a sharp corner. When the person in front of me went around the corner it was dark. I remember thinking this would not be a good place for the light, which was strapped to my helmet, to go out. Well, guess what? It did go off. I could not see where to place my hands to maneuver around the wall until the person behind me came around a previous corner and their light gave me enough light for me to see where to grasp to get around the corner.

There are times when those serving the LORD grow weary and need the light from other Christians to carry them through some dark moments in their lives. Light is very precious. Let your light shine for CHRIST, you never know who needs it.

Then JESUS moves to a more intimate use of light from a city to the home. It is one thing to be the light to others but vital to be the light at home.

Just as contaminates can render salt tasteless, so can barriers such as a basket, prevent the light we have from shining through our lives to others. We need the qualities of the Beatitudes in our lives so we can stay focused upon HIM.

In my opinion, this is why JESUS follows the Beatitudes with a statement about a believer’s influence using salt and light as examples. The qualities in the beatitudes result in us knowing ourselves. Knowing ourselves, through self examination led by the HOLY SPIRIT, results in the contaminants and barriers in our lives being revealed. Thus, when GOD has completed HIS work in us, as outlined in the Beatitudes, we are pure salt and unobstructed light. There is no deception or hidden purpose in our lives. Our sole desire is to serve our LORD, as HE wants us to serve HIM.

We know that too much salt can be offensive and too much light can be uncomfortable. There are times that much salt is needed, such as preserving or an intense light is needed such as surgery using a laser. CHRIST must lead us at all times to give balance as we serve HIM. There are times HE wants us to be salt and other times HE wants us to be light. In either case HE knows which is needed and the intensity of either or both.

When the qualities stated in the Beatitudes are produced in our lives, we will have spiritual balance because we will only follow HIS directions.

Let’s read Matthew 5:17-20:
Christ Fulfills the Law – Righteous.
17 “Don’t assume that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For • I assure you: Until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter[4] Or not one iota; iota is the smallest letter of the Gk alphabet. or one stroke of a letter will pass from the law until all things are accomplished. 19 Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches people to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever practices and teaches [these commandments]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the • scribes and • Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

CHRIST tells us that we have freedom in HIM but not to assume we are free to do as we like. This statement will become more self-evident after CHRIST completes HIS mission and sends the HOLY SPIRIT back to indwell every believer. We are secure in our salvation but we are still to obey the spirit of the law. The spirit of the law goes within each of us and our intent. JESUS says that HE came to fulfill the law. Again, the qualities of the Beatitudes in our lives help reveal the intent of our heart and to stay focused upon our LORD and confess sin that comes into our lives. It is a constant purification through sanctification.

We have freedom as Christians but we are not to become flippant and think we can do what ever we want to do. More especially we are not to teach such practices to others.

As teachers of the Bible, we are accountable to GOD. It is an awesome responsibility. We as teachers need your prayers that we remain grafted in the vine so that HIS message always flows through to us and then to those we teach.

The parable of the ten (10) virgins comes to mind. I recently heard a reporter interviewing a boy preacher. She stated that she was Buddhist and was a good person. Then she asked, “Does that mean if I am not a Christian when I die, I will not go to heaven?” His answer, YES! We as humans think we can get to heaven any number of ways. To me John 5: 24 makes asking CHRIST to forgive you of your sins and to come into your life a no brainer. Do you want to know for sure you are going to heaven and will not be judged? These are JESUS’ words.

John 5:24:
24 “I assure you: Anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.

Let’s read Matthew 25:1-13:

To me this is an example of those who want to get to heaven their way, the foolish versus those who are wise and see that their own ability is useless because GOD demands perfection. This why we all need CHRIST because the very best in any of us is not good enough. But, whereas, we do not measure up, CHRIST does. We get to heaven on HIS credentials. HE is the Lamb of GOD WHO was slain for our sins. Simple, yet so hard, especially when tradition is so strong. Someone needs this. Do not delay, ask CHRIST into your lives now. After all HE is a Jew.

The Parable of the 10 Virgins
1 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like 10 virgins[1] Or bridesmaids who took their lamps and went out to meet the groom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were sensible. 3 When the foolish took their lamps, they didn’t take oil with them. 4 But the sensible ones took oil in their flasks with their lamps. 5 Since the groom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. 6 “In the middle of the night there was a shout: ‘Here’s the groom! Come out to meet him.’ 7 “Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. 8 But the foolish ones said to the sensible ones, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ 9 “The sensible ones answered, ‘No, there won’t be enough for us and for you. Go instead to those who sell, and buy oil for yourselves.’ 10 “When they had gone to buy some, the groom arrived. Then those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut. 11 “Later the rest of the virgins also came and said, ‘Master, master, open up for us!’ 12 “But he replied, ‘• I assure you: I do not know you!’ 13 “Therefore be alert, because you don’t know either the day or the hour.[2] Other mss add in which the Son of Man is coming.

The parable to me highlights the need to teach and preach truth. The only way to heaven is through CHRIST. The virgins all have lamps but the five (5) wise virgins have extra oil. The extra oil represents the HOLY SPIRIT. The unwise virgins that do not have extra oil represent people who try to earn their way to heaven through good deeds but without the presence of the HOLY SPIRIT in their lives. They fall short. Simply, they do not have CHRIST in them. They have performed but have missed the mark.

This is why the truth must always be presented clearly. To be a Christian you must ask CHRSIT to forgive you of your sins and to come into your heart. Do not let anyone tell you any different or do not tell yourself that salvation is any different. Christianity cannot be reasoned from an intellectual point of view. It is only after CHRIST is in you that the eyes of your heart are open to understanding and assurance that you belong to GOD through CHRIST. You are HIS child. Here are a couple of scriptures:

Eyes of your heart, Ephesians 1:18-19:

18 [I pray]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the glorious riches of His inheritance among the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power to us who believe, according to the working of His vast strength.

The HOLY SPIRIT assures us that we are HIS children in Romans 8:15-17:

15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “• Abba, Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children, 17 and if children, also heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ—seeing that[13] Or provided that we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

CHRIST tells us as Christians we are salt and light. So let your light shine and add flavor to life as our LORD leads you. Your Christian influence is vital to a lost world.

We may stop to help someone who is having car trouble. The person having car trouble may see us a salt or both salt and light because we stopped. Passersby may see us a light. We have influence where ever we are. We must not lose our saltiness or let our light diminish. The only way we stay salty and keep our light bright is through our constant relationship with CHRIST by abiding in HIM.

Quality is Job One - Matthew 5:1-12 - October 7, 2007

Sunday school Lesson – Quality is Job One – October 7, 2007

This begins an eight week study in the book of Matthew. The title of this series is “Believer’s Handbook 101.”

Our scripture for the series will be taken from Matthew chapters 5, 6 and 7.

October 7 – Matthew 5:1-12
October 14 – Matthew 5:13-20
October 21 – Matthew 5:21-32
October 28 – Matthew 5:33-48

In our first lesson we explore the Beatitudes. Our scripture is Matthew 5:1-12. Our LORD has revealed a new understanding to me while preparing this lesson. I had always seen the Beatitudes as separate groups of people on their spiritual journey through life. To me it was always somewhat depressing and suggesting goals which did not appeal to me or seemed unattainable.

Our LORD had to do a work on me first. So here is the shift I had to make in my thinking regarding the Beatitudes.

First the Beatitudes do not represent different groups of people. They are foundational qualities our LORD wants every Christian to develop as they grow and mature in HIM. Think of them as stepping stones or milestones to spiritual growth and maturity. CHRIST is speaking to HIS disciples but others are listening as well.

Second, we cannot achieve these qualities through our own efforts. They are different but in some ways similar to spiritual gifts. GOD equips us with spiritual gifts so HE can work through us to manifest spiritual gifts to benefit mankind and get HIS work accomplished. Spiritual gifts are manifested through certain believers. The Beatitudes are personal qualities GOD desires in every believer which are manifested in our lives as we grow and mature in HIM. These are qualities that GOD desires in Christians so they can better relate to the world around them. The Beatitudes are a process whereas spiritual gifts are given to us at the time they are needed to serve our LORD as HE ministers to others through us.

The Beatitudes are foundational but as Christians we have a choice whether or not we grow and mature in CHRIST. To grow into fully mature Christians, we have to yield our will to our LORD. It is all about relationship. It is our relationship with our LORD and getting to really know HIM and not just about knowing about HIM.

When the Beatitudes are present in our lives, they bring us to a deeper understanding of ourselves and GOD. We cannot know and understand others until we know and understand ourselves and our relationship with GOD. When we know ourselves and our relationship with GOD through CHRIST, we can see others as GOD sees them. GOD wants us to see others as HE sees them.

Let’s read Matthew 5:1-2
The Sermon on the Mount
1 When He saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain, and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. 2 Then[1] Lit Then opening His mouth He began to teach them, saying:

First, we notice that JESUS saw the crowds. The scripture does not say HE was among the crowd. JESUS goes up on the mountain. Some people in the crowd saw JESUS, including HIS disciples. Those in the crowd and HIS disciples watch JESUS to see what HE is going to do. Did HE want to be alone and pray or what?

They see JESUS sit. This was their cue. It was customary for Rabbis to sit when they taught. When JESUS sat that was their cue that HE was going to teach. HIS disciples were in the group. It is believed that not all the crowd came to where JESUS was. But it is clear that HIS disciples did and it is believed that they were HIS primary audience.

Then JESUS gets their attention by saying the equivalent of “Now, listen up.”

Each statement is preceded by the word “Blessed” which can be read as “When you have the quality mentioned it assures you of the reward” or “How blessed are ----”, “Oh how blessed are those who are ---“or “How spiritually well off and prosperous are ---.” Such as when a person, particularly a believer recognizes and acknowledges their spiritual condition as being poor in spirit, the kingdom of heaven in yours. Blessed means GOD has the power to bring about the reward mentioned.

JESUS in essence is saying, “GOD congratulates and blesses you when you when you are ----.” GOD has the power to bring about the blessing. In essence you are on the right track toward spiritual growth and maturity which will not end until we are in the presence of our LORD.

Let’s look how these are stepping stones or mileage markers to spiritual growth and maturity. They represent the ideal disciple. So keep this in mind it is a spiritual growth and maturing process.

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, because the kingdom of heaven is theirs.

This is ground zero for every human but also vital for every believer to grow spiritually.

All humans must recognize their spiritual poverty before they can begin to find help. Arrogance prevents us from experiencing GOD. How blessed are those who recognize and acknowledge that they are spiritually poor. This means our ego has to step aside to allow GOD to reveal Himself to us.

Death is imminent for all humans. GOD has placed a nature within us that says there is more beyond this life. So we search and seek. GOD says HE has made earth to manifest Himself to all mankind – sun, moon, stars, nature, wildlife, wondrous beauty, etc. When we realize that we are helpless to escape this world through our own efforts, we recognize our inability to do anything about our condition. So what is the answer? GOD reveals Himself to all mankind. GOD is the ONE WHO calls every human to Himself. All humans have the choice to accept or reject HIM. When we humble ourselves, realize we are helpless to anything about our spiritual condition and accept HIM, then the kingdom of heaven is ours. We as Christians are HIS representatives to a lost world but we must not be spiritually arrogant. We are all sinners saved by grace. We must recognize that we are spiritually poor but our salvation is secure.

Those who accept CHRIST as their SAVIOR move immediately from death into eternal life and will not come under judgment. Those not under the blood of CHRIST will be judged.

This is the good news of the gospel. In CHRIST we immediately have eternal life, assurance of the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT, assurance that we are the children of GOD, heir’s with CHRIST, will not be judged and you are citizen of the kingdom of heaven.

Guess what? It is FREE!!! If you have not asked CHRIST to forgive you of your sins, do it now by asking HIM to come into your life now. HE will come into your life and you will receive the gift of rebirth in your spirit at that instant.

4 Blessed are those who mourn, because they will be comforted.

This is a true recognition of our spiritual poverty. When we recognize sin in our lives, we regret it and mourn. We want to do something to pay for our sins but glory to GOD; HE sent HIS SON WHO died in our place. Then we recognize that it is our sin that put HIM on the cross. Again, we mourn. CHRIST is the solution to our grief and HE gives us HIS comfort through the HOLY SPIRIT.

The HOLY SPIRIT indwells each Christian and HE gives us assurance that our sins are forgiven and comforts us.

5 Blessed are the gentle, because they will inherit the earth.

We have salvation and the presence of the HOLY SPIRIT in us. So the next step is obedience. Put what we have into action.

In some translations “gentle” is translated “meek.” I have heard many sermons preached on this. I found it hard to think about being “meek.” It just seemed boring and not manly. In preparing for this lesson our LORD revealed a treasure.

The word used for “gentle” is the word that describes a mighty, powerful horse, a charger. This steed has mighty power but it is under control. It is like a large dynamo that has all the power you need for what ever you want to do.

I was muttering to myself as I walked downstairs to do something, something like, “LORD what is in us that is powerful and under control?” Like a bolt of lightning the answer came. THE HOLY SPIRIT!!!! WOW!!!

Just think about it. As Christians we all have the HOLY SPIRIT indwelling our bodies. This is GOD within us and GOD is in the business of moving mountains.

Then, I was puzzled about inheriting the earth? Before we become Christians the physical or earthly things rule us. After CHRIST comes into our lives the HOLY SPIRIT indwells our lives. We have the power within us to rule the physical things on earth.

JESUS tells us with faith the size of a mustard seed we can say to a mountain to move and it will move. Now I know that I have told a mountain to move and it is still there. This is why the Beatitudes are stepping stones. Our ego gets in the way of being obedient to GOD. As we grow and mature in CHRIST, we will not go around telling mountains to jump in the sea. But when we are spiritually mature in CHRIST, when we tell a mountain to move, it will move, because it will be GOD WHO tells us to tell the mountain to move.

Do you think CHIRST ruled the earth? I think so. I think every molecule, atom and sub-atomic particle were and still are under HIS command. HE rules earth and when we cloth ourselves in HIM, we will, also, rule the earth but as HE directs us. Otherwise, we need a bulldozer to move the mountain.

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, because they will be filled.

We have salvation, the presence of the HOLY SPIRIT in us and are secure in the knowledge that GOD is in us. So the next step is to seek first the kingdom of GOD and HIS righteousness. Power can be corrupting. This is why this step follows the knowledge that the GOD of the universe dwells in us.

When we are filled with the HOLY SPIRIT our desire is to be more like HIM. We hunger and thirst to really know HIM and be like HIM. We are equipped with the HOLY SPIRIT WHO reveals and teaches us all things. The important ingredient is for us to have the desire. We must yield our will to HIM to really know HIM. When we do, the promise is that we will be filled. This also keeps our focus upon HIM, HIS plan and purpose. Draw close to HIM and HE will draw close to you.

7 Blessed are the merciful, because they will be shown mercy.

We have salvation, the presence of the HOLY SPIRIT in us, security in the knowledge that GOD is in us and we seek to be like HIM. CHRIST gave HIS life for all of mankind. HE did not pick and choose. All who choose HIM, by asking HIM to forgive them of their sins and to come into their lives, HE accepts. CHRIST showed mercy to all mankind by giving HIS life.

Desiring to be righteous, as CHRIST is righteous, produces the quality of being merciful. As we show mercy to fellow humans, we receive mercy. We realize we have been shown mercy through the forgiveness of our sins. We have been made righteous in CHRIST.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart, because they will see God.

We are to be open and honest with GOD. We are to hold nothing back. Our lives are open before the LORD, nothing is hidden. Our word is our bond to GOD and to our fellow man or woman. We have no hidden agenda or motives.

We have salvation, the presence of the HOLY SPIRIT in us, security in the knowledge that GOD is in us, seek to be like HIM, have mercy and no hidden agenda. JESUS tells us that when we have reached this milestone of spiritual maturity, we will have a pure heart and will see GOD.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers, because they will be called sons of God.

When we are open and honest with GOD and our fellow man, then we are in a position to be peacemakers because we have no hidden agenda or motives.

We have salvation, the presence of the HOLY SPIRIT in us, security in the knowledge that GOD is in us, we seek to be like HIM, have been shown mercy and have a pure heart. Then we are ready for the ultimate service of presenting the gospel to all as GOD leads and directs our lives.

JESUS is called the Prince of Peace. GOD’S desire for each Christian is to be like JESUS. As we grow and mature in CHRIST fully equipped with all the preceding stepping stones, we are equipped to be peacemakers. The greatest peacemaker is when we present CHRIST to others through the life we live so others are drawn to HIM. It is never about us but always about HIM. The ultimate peace is when we surrender our lives to CHRIST. Reconciling a lost sinner with GOD is the reason CHRIST gave HIS life. Now it is up to us to be co-laborers with HIM.

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness, because the kingdom of heaven is theirs.

We have salvation, the presence of the HOLY SPIRIT in us, security in the knowledge that GOD is in us, we seek to be like HIM, have been shown mercy, have a pure heart and present the gospel. When we are doing the absolute will of GOD, we will have opposition to those in the world.

Verse 3 ended with the words “the kingdom of heaven is theirs.”
Verse 10 ends with the words “the kingdom of heaven is theirs.” Often the world wonders when Christians are persecuted if maybe they have done something to anger GOD. It seems that those who serve our LORD do encounter troubles. CHRIST is saying when you have reached full spiritual maturity and you are persecuted, you know that heaven is your destiny. Keep your focus.

Just as JESUS was persecuted, Christians will also be persecuted. When we read the words of this Beatitude many of us wonder how we would hold up being persecuted. This is why this is a growth and maturing process. When we are at this point, we will do as JESUS did, remain faithful to GOD.

Keep in mind these are stepping stones of the desired qualities GOD wants in HIS children’s lives. Step one is our relationship to GOD through CHRIST. Our relationship with GOD is vital. Do not worry about where you are spiritually but first desire to know HIM. This is done by reading HIS WORD, praying and attending a church that teaches the truth.

Tell CHRIST that you want to really get to know HIM. You do not want to just get to know about HIM but you want to experience HIM and become intimate friends with HIM.

When I prepared this portion of the lesson my thoughts immediately traveled to a person in Poland who ministers under some very difficult circumstances. He has been beaten and while we were in Poland the police had approached him about being active in the community. It was thought one of the leaders of a local church reported him because he is presenting the true gospel of CHRIST.

11 “Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and falsely say every kind of evil against you because of Me. 12 Be glad and rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

JESUS was speaking the Beatitudes to HIS disciples both then and now. When we place our wills into HIS hands and are completely obedient to HIM, be prepared. This is why we must go through the steps to become mature. If we try to jump over a step we will become discouraged. Keep in mind, GOD did not make us for time but for eternity. So your age or how long you have been a Christian is not important.

One important statement in verse 11 is the word “falsely.” When we are obedient to GOD, then we will do things HIS way. But if we do things according to our own dictates, we will suffer the consequences. When we are obedient to HIM we can rejoice because we know we are doing HIS will. It will not matter what circumstances we encounter because it is not our work but GOD’S work. So rejoice!!!

Again, I caution you not to become discouraged as you recall the Beatitudes. You cannot develop these qualities in yourself. Allow GOD, through CHRIST, to feed and nurture you so you will grow and mature in HIM. Keep in mind your life is all about your relationship to GOD through CHRIST. Keep in mind you were not created for time but for eternity.

Ask CHRIST to forgive you of your sins and ask HIM into your lives. Being a Christian is not belonging to a church but it is CHRIST in you. CHRIST in you makes you a Christian. Once CHRIST is in you, seek a church teaching truth so you can grow spiritually and have fellowship with other believers.

Why does GOD desire for HIS children to develop these qualities?

The Beatitudes are qualities in our lives designed for us to know ourselves and our relationship with GOD through CHRIST. We cannot know and understand others until we know and understand ourselves and our relationship with GOD through CHRIST. When we know ourselves and our relationship with GOD through CHRIST, then we can see others as GOD sees them.

HE wants us to see others as HE sees them and be obedient to HIM as HE directs. With these qualities we are fully equipped with all we need to face anything the world has to thrown at us. But keep in mind these qualities do not necessarily come quickly. But as we are obedient to GOD, HE is at work in each of us to produce these qualities. Our part is to be obedient and maintain the relationship as HE continues to do HIS work in each of us.

When a baby is born if they knew all that would come about in their lives over a lifetime they would feel defeated before their lives got started. But each moment the baby grows and interacts with the world around them, they develop physically, mentally and spiritually. Then a time comes in their lives they have to make the decision about their nutrition, exercise, education and lifestyle. The same is true for Christians. What kind of Christian do you want to be when you grow up? God wants us to have these qualities. Let HIM be your trainer and teacher. Here am I LORD with all my hang ups. Take my life and make out of it what you want it to be. Amen.
