Sunday School Lesson – Honor the Sovereign LORD – November 27, 2005

This our final lesson in our series “When Life Cave’s in”.

Our background scripture is Job 38:1-42:17

Our focus scripture is Job 42:1-13, 16-17

We have been on a journey with Job through a portion of his life. Job has suffered mightily for something GOD allowed which his friends tried to convince him GOD was punishing him because of some sin. Neither Job nor his friends knew the real reason Job was suffering. It is a test. It is a test which benefits all of us through the ages. It gives us insight to know GOD in a more intimate way especially when we encounter trials and tough circumstances. The end result for Job and his friends is they will know GOD in a more intimate way after the test than they did before the test.

When unwanted or uncontrolled circumstances come into our life, our normal reaction is to blame GOD or god. GOD is the true GOD that is CHRIST’S FATHER, THE CREATOR and THE FATHER of us who are Christians through the miracle of rebirth. Then there is god who is defined as a god other than GOD.

We make many things god, such as power, money, education, intelligence, friends, the church, religion, the pastor, a good luck charm, something someone in whom we have confidence told us at a point in our life, tradition, notions, some artifact or stature, an image, an angel, a saint, etc. That is why it is so important when GOD or god is blamed for a situation we understand which GOD or god the person is blaming. Do we really know GOD?

Last week’s lesson was on wisdom, Chapter 28 of Job. This week we jump to the last Chapter in Job for our study.
We need to fill in some of the events between Chapters 28 and 38. They cover some of the following points:
- Job sums up his testimony in Chapters 29-31. Job maintains his innocence of any sin. He challenges anyone to prove him otherwise.
- Another friend of Job enters the picture. His name is Elihu. Elihu has been listening to all that has been said. Elihu responds in Chapters 32-37. Elihu has not spoken because he is younger than the other three of Job’s friends but he has remained silent as long as he can. Led by GOD’S SPIRIT Elihu is critical of Job’s three (3) other friends. He defends the justice of GOD but he does not contribute all suffering to GOD. Notice that GOD does not rebuke Elihu when we study GOD’S speech in Job 42:7, when GOD rebukes Job’s three (3) friends. Elihu mixes some truth with tradition but his intent is to speak to Job what GOD has laid upon his heart and mind. This reveals Elihu’s concept of GOD and the relationship Elihu has with GOD even though he is younger than Job’s friends. The beauty of the Christian life is that a new Christian can know GOD more intimately than a Christian who has been a Christian for many years. The key is not how long one has been a Christian but whether or not we have released the control of our life to GOD so we can get to know HIM in a more intimate way.
- There are certain portions of Elihu’s speech that give glimpses of CHRIST, which sparked in my mind the wonderful blessing we have as Christian’s to be indwelt and empowered by THE HOLY SPIRIT. We have THE HOLY SPIRIT to comfort us when we are going through difficult times in our life. THE HOLY SPIRIT helps us to look beyond our circumstances and look back at them from GOD’S perspective. It is hard for us to view situations when we look from our perspective.


- We as Christians can get into the pit of despair very easy. I was there this week. I was bathing in self-pity and woe-is-me. A beautiful gospel song came over the radio and brought the joy and blessings of THE LORD to my mind. This set my feet upon the SOILD-ROCK and lifted my heart out of the miry-clay of life into the sunshine of the presence of our LORD. What a blessing!

GOD makes two (2) speeches in Job 38:1-40:2 and 40:6-41:34. Job makes a brief response to GOD in Job 40:3-5.

When GOD speaks in Job 38:1-40:2 HE does not tell Job why he is suffering. HE does not mention Satan or the test.

Keep in mind that Job had told GOD he wanted to approach HIM and ask HIM some questions but if GOD spoke first Job would answer HIM. GOD is doing the talking. Then GOD gives Job an opportunity to speak.

Job is having an encounter with GOD HIMSELF. Job is still covered with boils and suffering. GOD gives Job the opportunity to speak. Job has the option of challenging GOD but he does not. After GOD’S speech Job sees GOD in a different way and with a new understanding. GOD has revealed HIMSELF to Job.

If GOD had explained the situation to Job about this being a test then Job would have been enlightened but this information could have possibly prevented Job from receiving the full benefit of the test. Job is still in the dark so-to-speak but he is having an encounter with GOD and Job is still living. Remember common belief was that no human could approach GOD and live.




GOD asks Job a series of questions when we read Job Chapters 40-41. Job 40:1-9 is the beginning of GOD challenging Job to answer HIS questions.

1 The Lord answered Job: 2 Will the one who contends with the • Almighty correct [Him]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. ? Let him who argues with God give an answer.[1] Lit God respond to it 3 Then Job answered the Lord: 4 I am so insignificant. How can I answer You? I can add nothing. 6 Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind:[4] Jb 38:1; 2 Kg 2:1,11; Ezk 1:4 7 Get ready to answer Me like a man; When I question you, you will inform Me.[5] Jb 38:3 8 Would you really challenge My justice? Would you declare Me guilty to justify yourself?[6] Jb 9:20; 13:18; 22:3 9 Do you have an arm[7] Ex 6:6; 15:16; Dt 5:15 like God’s? Can you thunder with a voice like His?

Then GOD goes to HIS second speech and asks Job if he still questioned either HIS justice or HIS power?

Today’s study brings understanding to GOD’S purpose for testing Job.

Let’s read Job 42:1-6 (Job’s Final Speech after GOD’S speech to him.)
Job Replies to the Lord

Job and GOD are having a conversation. Job responds to GOD with “I know”. GOD got Job’s attention with HIS speech about HIM creating the world, all that is in the world and how HE is in control of all things. Job has had an encounter with GOD and as a result Job’s relationship with GOD has moved from what he has heard about GOD to now having an intimate relationship with GOD and knowing GOD firsthand and personal. In fact Job says “my eyes have seen YOU”.

Notice, “I take back my words and repent in dust and ashes”. When we encounter GOD we feel unworthy and unclean. Job felt the words he had spoken to GOD were brash and had hurt GOD; therefore he was deeply sorry as expressed by his statement of “repent in dust and ashes”.

GOD told Job in 38:2-41:34 that HE had created everything and HE was still in control of it. HE is still sovereign, all powerful and all knowing. Job’s suffering was not a reason for Job to question whether or not GOD was being fair.

Job realizes that GOD is wise and acts justly. Nothing happens on earth that takes GOD by surprise or prevents HIM from carrying out HIS plan and purpose.

This revelation resulted in a major change in Job’s life. It changed Job’s attitude toward GOD from one of rebellious pride, arrogance and that GOD owed him an explanation for his suffering to accept whatever GOD allowed into his life. This is confidence and trust in GOD. It recognizes the sovereignty of GOD.

JESUS tells us in Luke 11:11-13
11 What father among you, if his son[12] Other mss read son asks for bread, would give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give[13] Lit the Father from heaven will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
GOD brought Job to a new level of understanding and knowledge about GOD. Oh, if HE would only use magic dust to reveal HIMSELF and bring us into a more mature relationship with HIM rather than some of the circumstances we have to encounter in life.

This again is a point we have to trust that GOD knows us and what it takes for us to know HIM in a more intimate way or for us to deal with an obstacle in our life that hinders us from serving HIM more completely.

Such an encounter is not to be feared. I often tell THE LORD, help me to learn this lesson well because I DO NOT want to have to repeat it. But JESUS tells us when we are yoked with HIM life becomes easier. When we try to live life in our own strength it often becomes unbearable.

Matthew 11:28-30 (JESUS is speaking)

28 "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

It is never wrong, in my opinion, to ask GOD why when life’s circumstances come down upon us. GOD is sovereign, all powerful, all knowing and is in control of all things. We know GOD is in all things bringing about the best which can be extracted from a situation even when the things are the result of our bad decisions. Keep in mind when we sin we pay the consequences for our sin. If we speed and get caught, we have to pay the consequences. If we abuse drugs we have to pay the consequences. If we neglect our health we have to pay the consequences.
Romans 8:28
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
Job searched himself for any sin he might have committed. He could not find any. GOD revealed to Job that HE is sovereign and is in control of all things. Job finally reconciled himself to this fact and rested in GOD.

This is an excerpt from The Herschel Hobbs Commentary published by LifeWay Christian Resources, Job encountered GOD and “he (Job) sensed GOD saying to him, in effect: It is not your part to know the why of all things. Yours is to realize who I AM, to believe that you can trust ME in all things. Job’s peace came not from answers to questions but from the realization that GOD was there and that HE cared. (Smith, Job: A Study in Providence and Faith, 133)

Let’s read Job 42:7-9

Jb 2:8; 2 Sm 13:19; Est 4:1,3 7 After the Lord had finished speaking[9] Lit speaking these words to Job, He said to Eliphaz the Temanite: “I am angry with you and your two friends, for you have not spoken the truth about Me, as My servant Job has. 8 Now take seven bulls and seven rams, go to My servant Job, and offer a burnt offering for yourselves.[10] Gn 8:20; 22:2–13; Ex 10:25 Then My servant Job will pray for you.[11] Gn 20:7,17; Nm 21:7; 1 Sm 2:25 I will surely accept his [prayer]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. and not deal with you as your folly deserves. For you have not spoken the truth about Me, as My servant Job has.” 9 Then Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the Lord had told them, and the Lord accepted Job’s [prayer]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. .

After GOD finishes with Job HE turns HIS attention to Job’s three (3) friends. Notice GOD does not chastise Elihu for the reasons already mentioned.

GOD begins with Eliphaz because he has been the leader of the group. GOD is angry with Job’s friends because they had not spoken the truth about HIM.

Truth means “being established and securely determined”.
Recall that JESUS said HE is THE TRUTH. TRUTH is a person.

John14:6 (JESUS is speaking)

6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

GOD uses the phrase “MY servant Job” four (4) times. GOD calls Job’s name each time the phrase is used. The fact that GOD uses the phrase means Job has a place of special honor. By GOD referring to Job as “MY servant” confirms to everyone and especially to Job that Job’s suffering is not due to sin.

GOD requires Job’s three (3) friends to obtain seven (7) bulls and seven (7) rams and offer them as a burnt offering for their sin. This is a hefty sacrifice, which shows the seriousness of their sin.

The sin is the result of Job’s friends not speaking the truth about GOD. They offered Job a philosophy that was based upon tradition and had no foundation. They did not help Job during his suffering but criticized him. They were relying upon tradition, logic and the teachings of others, rather than GOD. They had a distorted view of GOD which needed to be changed.

The bulls and rams were to be offered as a sacrifice and Job was to pray for them. To their credit they did as GOD instructed and avoided the wrath of GOD. They had an encounter with GOD and had to make a decision, obey or not. They decided to obey GOD which resulted in them being spared and forgiven by GOD and being enlightened by GOD.

This is a foreshadow of CHRIST giving HIS LIFE on THE CROSS for each of us as sinners. We as a human must be obedient and accept CHRIST as our SAVIOR to avoid eternal punishment.

When we ask CHRIST to forgive us of our sins and ask HIM to come into our life we are born into GOD’S family and inherit eternal life at that moment. CHRIST intercedes for all Christians now. HE is our mediator.

Satan would love to bring us down as a Christian and devour us but CHRIST stands between us and Satan. CHRIST’S shed blood protects us. We have the hedge row around us. We have the blood of CHRIST sprinkled upon the doorpost of our heart. We are in the hands of GOD and CHRIST. We are well protected. Just do not let temptation cause us to escape our wall of protection.

Hebrews 7:25
25 Therefore He is always able to save[8] Or He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them.

Let’s read Job 42:10-13, 16-17:
God Restores Job
10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his prosperity[12] Ps 85:1; Jr 29:14; Zph 2:7 and doubled his [previous]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. possessions.[13] Jb 1:13–19 11 All his brothers, sisters, and former acquaintances came to his house and dined with him in his house. They offered him sympathy and comfort[14] Jb 2:11; 21:34; Gn 50:21; Ps 69:20 concerning all the adversity the Lord had brought on him.[15] Jb 1:13–19; 2:7–11; Isa 45:7 Each one gave him a qesitah,[16] The value of the currency is unknown; Gn 33:19; Jos 24:32 and a gold earring. 12 So the Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the earlier. He owned 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. 13 He also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 He named his first [daughter]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. Jemimah, his second Keziah, and his third Keren-happuch. 15 No women as beautiful as Job’s daughters could be found in all the land, and their father granted them an inheritance with their brothers. 16 Job lived 140 years after this and saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. 17 Then Job died, old and full of days.[17] Gn 25:8; 35:29

Verse 10 is a key verse. Here it is in the King James Version of the Bible 10 And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.

The words “turned the captivity of Job” is the point Job was healed of his boils. When Job was obedient to GOD by praying for his friends, GOD healed Job and restored his prosperity.

This is a message to us. We must be sure to pray as GOD leads us, especially for those who have not treated us as they should.

The scripture tells us in Romans 12:19 (2 Bible translations)

19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

19 Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead, leave room for His[2] Lit the wrath. For it is written: Vengeance belongs to Me; I will repay,[3] Dt 32:35 says the Lord.

The scripture also tells us in Romans 8:31

31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

GOD is building character in each of us. GOD uses circumstances in life to bring us into full spiritual maturity and become more like CHRIST.

Our study brings us back to the key point, GOD is sovereign and the relationship we have with GOD through CHRIST determines how we cope with life’s circumstances.

As for me, I am still under construction.

Job Chapters 22 - 28 - Wisdom - Nov. 20, 2005

Sunday School Lesson – Look to GOD for Wisdom – November 20, 2005

This is lesson three (3) in our series “When Life Cave’s in”.

Our background scripture is Job 22:1 – 28:28

Our focus scripture is Job 28:12-19; 23-28.

Our lesson today is on wisdom. Wisdom is something most of us desire and seek. The world offers its’ wisdom. We take courses or read self-help books hoping to obtain wisdom. We seek wise counsel.

I have prayed for wisdom as stated in James. It is like some other things we pray for; often GOD does not grant a request instantly. It is a process of building our character or preparing us to be able to exercise wisdom. I am still in the process.

In James 1:5 we find:
5 Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him.

I have heard wisdom described as “Knowledge applied to GOD’S plan”.

Knowledge alone often gives cold comfort. True wisdom “can” guide one through life and console one through troubled times when one knows GOD.

Notice the word “can”. The difference in using “can” and “will” is based upon our relationship with GOD through CHRIST. Which word we apply, “can” or “will”, to our life’s circumstances also depends upon how we interpret and understand the word “know”.
Have we committed our life to CHRIST and allowed THE HOLY SPIRIT to teach us and build the relationship with GOD such that we really “know” GOD and not just “know” about GOD?

I find based upon my past concepts or notions of what I thought GOD should be still shape some of my thinking and expectations of what and how GOD should respond to certain situations. It often results in disappointment until I confess it to GOD and ask HIM to help me understand a situation, if possible. (I may not be mature enough spiritually to comprehend an explanation at this time in my life.)

In Job 28: 1-11, Job discusses man’s search for wealth using illustrations regarding mining for gold and gems. This is Job’s response after his friends have gone through two (2) cycles of dialogue with Job. On each occasion his friends continue to tell Job his suffering is the result of sin. Job’s friends become frustrated and angry with Job. Contrary to his friends, Job becomes stronger and his friends become weaker.

The theme in Job 28 is “Where can wisdom be found?”

Most of us search for and desire true “wisdom”. Let’s fast forward to the last scripture in today’s study to see what Job finds in his search.

Job tells us in Job 28:28

28 He said to mankind, “Look! The • fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to turn from evil is understanding.”[22]

Wisdom is to “fear of the LORD”. “Fear” is a Hebrew word used to mean “worshipful submission, reverential awe and obedient respect to GOD”. As an act of expression to show we “fear” GOD, we turn from evil.
When we know GOD cannot tolerate evil, when we truly respect GOD and have a loving intimate relationship with GOD, we turn from that which offends GOD.

GOD has revealed this to Job; of course, this is before CHRIST gave HIS life for the forgiveness of sin for mankind. Such an outward response, expressed faith in GOD thus reserving a spot, so-to-speak for the person expressing such faith, in eternity.

Our expression of faith after THE CROSS is to believe CHRIST died upon THE CROSS, ask HIM to forgive us of our sins and to ask HIM to come into our life. Then as a born-again Christian we are indwelled by THE HOLY SPIRIT as our security deposit from GOD that confirms we are HIS child. Then through the power of THE HOLY SPIRIT we are to live so the fruit of THE SPIRIT is manifested through us. This will demonstrate that we are walking with our LORD through the power of THE HOLY SPIRIT.

As a Pastor in Poland told me, remember fruit has seeds and when you produce the fruit of THE SPIRIT you are also planting seeds that will produce more fruit.

In CHRIST we have wisdom. Note the scripture in Colossians.

Colossians 2:3

3 In Him (CHRIST) all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden.

The question is, if we have CHRIST we should be brimming with wisdom? We are wise because we have been wise enough to recognize our need for GOD and we responded to GOD’S invitation to us to receive CHRIST. But this is only the beginning of our journey with CHRIST. Notice “In CHRIST all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden.”
So how do you discover hidden treasures? You study, ponder, plan and search.

Job raises the question, “Where can wisdom be found and understanding be located?” in Job 28:12. Job begins his dissertation for the search.

Job 28:12-19:

12 But where can wisdom be found, and where is understanding located? 13 No man can know its value,[8] LXX reads way since it cannot be found in the land of the living.[9] Ps 116:9; 142:5; Isa 38:11 [10] Jb 11:6; 28:20–21; Ps 44:21 14 The ocean depths say, “It’s not in me,” while the sea declares, “I don’t have it.”[11] Dt 30:11–13 15 Gold cannot be exchanged for it, and silver cannot be weighed out for its price. 16 Wisdom cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir,[12] Jb 22:24; 1 Kg 9:28; 10:11 in precious onyx or sapphire.[13] Or lapis lazuli [14] Pr 8:10; 16:16; Isa 54:11 17 Gold and glass do not compare with it, and articles of fine gold cannot be exchanged for it.[15] 1 Kg 10:21; Ps 119:72; Pr 8:19 18 Coral and quartz are not worth mentioning. The price of wisdom is beyond pearls.[16] Pr 3:15; 8:11; 20:15 19 Topaz from • Cush cannot compare with it, and it cannot be valued in pure gold.
Job’s friends argued based upon justice, tradition and reasoning to explain Job’s suffering.

We know why Job is suffering but Job himself, his friends and others outside of the heavenly council do not know. This is true with our life today. As we seek the wisdom gleaned from GOD’S WORD and prayer, we discover that true wisdom comes from an intimate loving relationship with GOD through CHRIST. It is through our yielding to GOD and the application of what we learn through our relationship with GOD that wisdom is revealed.

Job is intrigued by the ability of humans to discover the hidden wealth of earthly treasures and how we as humans place a value on these discovered treasures.

When it comes to discovering wisdom one can search every spot on earth and come up empty handed. Even if one could find wisdom how could they place a price on it as one would value other material possessions? True wisdom is priceless.

So who knows the way to wisdom and where it is located. This is like a treasure map. The “X” marks the spot. So if one wants to find wisdom go to the source - GOD. How does Job know GOD is the source of wisdom?

Let’s examine Job 28: 23-28

Jb 42:5; 1 Kg 10:1 23 But God understands the way to wisdom, and He knows its location. 24 For He looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens. 25 When God fixed the weight of the wind and limited the water by measure,[19] Gn 1:6–9; Isa 40:12 26 when He established a limit[20] Or decree for the rain and a path for the lightning,[21] Jb 38:25; Zch 10:1 27 He considered wisdom and evaluated it; He established it and examined it. 28 He said to mankind, “Look! The • fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to turn from evil is understanding.”[22]

GOD created the world. Since everything functions in the world exactly as it should and operates with precision it is obvious GOD manifests wisdom.

As we began our study, we end with verse 28. GOD says to mankind. PAY ATTENTION!!!! You did not exist until 9 months prior to your birth upon the face of earth. Where did you come from and where are you going? Could you think yourself into being? I don’t think so. Can you prevent your death? I don’t think so. You are going to die one day. Do you want to spend eternity with ME by accepting MY SON as your SAVIOR and be a child of MINE through the miracle of rebirth? Or do you want spend eternity away from ME? It is your decision.
GOD says realize you are mortal and I AM eternal and I created the world and mankind. The world around you and the way it functions should be enough for you to be in awe of ME. When you realize that all the world did not come about by random probability this is your invitation to seek ME. The scripture tells us in Matthew 7:7-11
Keep Asking, Searching, Knocking
7 “Keep asking,[3] Or Ask and it will be given to you. Keep searching,[4] Or Search and you will find. Keep knocking,[5] Or Knock and the door[6] Lit and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who searches finds, and to the one who knocks, the door[7] Lit knocks, it will be opened. 9 What man among you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

GOD is wisdom. Go to HIM with all your questions and concerns.

As I studied Job I was intrigued with how much of the knowledge of the working of the world is revealed. This is roughly 2000 B.C.

As we build a loving intimate relationship with GOD, our FATHER, then we will trust HIM in all matters of life. We were not created for time but for eternity. Job says in Job 13:15 15 Even if He kills me, I will hope in Him.[12] Other Hb mss read I will be without hope I will still defend my ways before Him.[13] Jb 5:8; 23:3–7

Be wise and commit your life to CHRIST today. An exciting journey is waiting as you walk with GOD in the cool of the evening and as you walk down the road we call life.

This is the day THE LORD has made rejoice and be glad in it, again I say rejoice!

Sunday School Lesson – Carefully Evaluate Explanations – November 13, 2005

This is our second lesson in our series “When Life Cave’s in”, which is a study of Job’s suffering.

Our background scripture is Job 3:1-14:22. I will not attempt to copy this much scripture but I encourage you to read it. As usual I will copy the focus scripture.

Our focus scripture is Job 4:6-8; 5:27; 8:4-8; 11:13-15; 13:20-24

When we encounter problems in our life there are many folks who will come to us, meaning well, who offer a lot of advice.

I heard a story of a father who was having a problem with one of his sons. A friend of his told him, “If that were my son I would do “so and so””. The father replied, “Yes if that were your son I would do the same thing”. It is often easy for us to tell others how to handle a situation or grief but it is another thing when it happens to us.

We do need friends and support when life cave’s in on top of us. Job’s friends came to his aid, sat and mourned with him in silence for seven days. Job’s situation did not change, so let’s see what advice his friend’s have for him.

In Job Chapter 3, Job breaks his silence, speaks and wishes he had never been born. Job’s friends take this as Job lamenting over some sin he had either committed or some member of his family had committed. Job had suffered a great tragedy through the loss of his animals, servants, family and now his body is covered with boils.

Since Job has spoken wishing he had never been born his friends now believe they can give Job their interpretation of the events in Job’s life.

Job’s three friends are Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar. Bible scholars believe the order of the names of Job’s friends indicates that Eliphaz was likely the elder of his friends and presented the most words of advice to Job. (Job Chapters 4 and 5.) Job replies to Eliphaz’s advice in Chapters 6 and 7.

Bildad gives his advice in Chapter 8. Job responds to Bildad’s advice in Chapters 9 and 10.

Zophar gives his take on the situation in Chapter 11. Job responds to Zophar’s advice in Chapters 12 – 14.

Here is a general overview of the advice Job’s three friends gave him and is the focus scripture we will study:

Friend - Eliphaz

Basis for the advice – One learns by observing and experiencing life itself. So Eliphaz had observed, experienced life itself and was confident in what he was telling Job because he had this wealth of knowledge.

How did Eliphaz’s advice reflect his belief in GOD? Eliphaz was confident he had figured out how GOD works.

Friend – Bildad

Basis for the advice – One needs only know history based upon the knowledge handed down from the wise ones who have lived before us. That is we need to rely upon the wisdom handed down through tradition.

How did Bildad’s advice reflect his belief in GOD? Bildad believed their forefathers had figured GOD out and we needed to rely upon the knowledge from the past.

Friend – Zophar

Basis for the advice – Wisdom comes to those who are wise. Zophar considered himself wise therefore he had the right advice.

How did Zophar’s advice reflect his belief in GOD? Zophar thought the wise really know GOD and since he was wise he knew GOD.

The bottom line they all had the same conclusion, “We know that bad things happen to bad people and good things happen to good people. So Job since these tragedies have fallen upon you and your family, there is sin somewhere and you need to confess.”

The selected scripture gives us a cross-section of the advice that Job’s friends gave him.

Job curses the day he was born in Chapter 3. Eliphaz tells Job GOD has an unalterable law of sin and retribution, so it is obvious that you have sinned. Job responds. Then Bildad tells Job based upon tradition your tragedy is the result of sins. Job responds. Zophar then tells Job based upon human logic, GOD is punishing you and you need to repent. Job responds.

Job rejects these explanations and tells them he is going directly to GOD, even though doing so may cost him his life. It was a common belief if a person approached GOD they would die. Job was planning to appeal to GOD to let him approach HIM and discuss his plight with GOD.
This action expresses confidence that Job did not know of any unconfessed sin in his life or the life of his family.

Let’s read Job 4:6-8 and 5:27 (Eliphaz’s advice to Job)

6 Isn’t your piety your confidence, and the integrity of your life[3] Lit ways your hope?[4] Jb 1:8; Gn 6:9; Ps 27:3 7 Consider: who has perished when he was innocent? Where have the honest been destroyed?[5] Jb 8:20; Ps 37:25; 91:9–10 8 In my experience, those who plow injustice and those who sow trouble reap the same.[6]

Job 5:27
27 We have investigated this, and it is true! Hear it and understand [it]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. for yourself.

Eliphaz hears Job say he regrets he was ever born. Eliphaz takes this as an expression of guilt from Job. So Eliphaz tells Job, I know you have comforted others during their bad times so based upon your piety (your inner reverence to GOD), you should be comforted with the same comfort as you have told others about. So Job your fear (reverence) of GOD coupled with your integrity (your perfect character) should be the two things you can find hope in during this time in your life. However based upon the way you are acting, I question what you may have done to deserve this suffering in your life.

Eliphaz says, “I have never seen an innocent or honest person destroyed by GOD. Job this is a straight forward matter, “you reap what you sow”. This fact of cause and effect has been checked out and it is true. So pay attention to what is happening to you in your life and admit you have done something and confess it to GOD.”




Let’s read Job 8:4-8 (Bildad’s advice to Job)

4 Since your children sinned against Him, He gave them over to their rebellion.[3] Jb 1:5,19 5 But if you earnestly seek[4] Ps 63:1; 78:34; Isa 26:9 God and ask the Almighty for mercy,[5] Jb 5:8; 9:15 6 if you are pure and upright, then He will move even now on your behalf and restore the home where your righteousness dwells.[6] Jb 22:23; 33:26; 42:10,12 7 Then, even if your beginnings were modest, your final days will be full of prosperity.[7] Jb 36:11; 42:10,12; Ps 25:13 8 For ask the previous generation, and pay attention to what their fathers discovered,[8]

So Bildad approaches Job’s situation from another angle. Bildad reaffirmed the law of sin and its’ consequences. Bildad brings Job’s children into the equation. Job’s children must have sinned. So Job needs to do two things (1) earnestly seek THE LORD as he asks for mercy (2) live a righteous life.

Bildad believed a righteous person could not suffer as Job was suffering, again based upon tradition. “You reap what you sow.”

Let’s read Job 11:3-6; 13-15 (Zophar’s advice to Job)

3 Should your babbling put others to silence, so that you can keep on ridiculing with no one to humiliate you? 4 You have said, “My teaching is sound, and I am pure in Your sight.”[3] Jb 10:7 5 But if only God would speak and declare His case[4] Lit and open His lips against you, 6 He would show you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. Know then that God has chosen to overlook some of your sin.[5] Ps 32:1–2; Jr 31:34; Rm 4:7–8

13 As for you, if you redirect your heart and lift up your hands to Him [in prayer]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. — 14 if there is iniquity in your hand, remove it, and don’t allow injustice to dwell in your tents[10] Jb 22:23; Jos 24:14 — 15 then you will hold your head high, free from fault. You will be firmly established and unafraid.[11]

Zophar accused Job of lying in verse 3, he wanted GOD to speak plainly to Job to let him know what sin he had committed in verse 5 and GOD was letting Job off light based upon what Job deserved for all the sins Job had committed (verse 6). But through it all Job there is hope for you.

So Zophar tells him what he has to do. Now Job “if” you will ------ “then” all will be back to normal in your life.

Again, “you reap what you sow”.

Job responds.

In Chapter 12:1-3: 1 Then Job answered: 2 No doubt you are the people, and wisdom will die with you![1] Jb 15:8 3 But I also have a mind; I am not inferior to you. Who doesn’t know the things you are talking about?[2] Lit With whom are not such things as these [3] Jb 13:2; 15:9

Job rejected his friend’s advice but Job, also, believed that he had been subjected to suffering by GOD. So Job would take his case directly to GOD. Job’s reasoning is captured in the Job 13:14-16.

Job 13:14-16: 14 Why do I put myself at risk[11] Lit I take my flesh in my teeth and take my life in my own hands? 15 Even if He kills me, I will hope in Him.[12] Other Hb mss read I will be without hope I will still defend my ways before Him.[13] Jb 5:8; 23:3–7 16 Yes, this will result in my deliverance, for no godless person can appear before Him.

Job reaffirms he will trust GOD even if HE kills him (verse 15). If I stand before GOD and survive then that will prove that my suffering is not the result of a sin, which I or my family has committed.





Let’s read Job 13:20-24 (Job’s response continues.)

Job wanted GOD to call a truce so Job could present his case to GOD. All Job could do was try to hide from GOD.

The idea in Job’s day is that a human could not approach GOD and live. Job knew he had not knowingly sinned and is willing to risk his life to approach GOD and plead his case.

Job believes his suffering is from the hand of GOD because Job asks GOD to remove HIS hand from him and do not let him fear any additional suffering because he is bringing his case directly to HIM.

So Job offers GOD a choice. If GOD could speak first Job would answer. Or if Job spoke first, he expected GOD to answer.

Job asks GOD to give him a specific reason for his punishment – iniquities, sins, transgressions, sin.

Job wants to know what he has done to incur this suffering. To his knowledge he has nothing to hide but GOD seems to have something against him and he wants to know what it is.

Job felt like GOD had abandoned him and in fact treated him like an enemy.

Job prayed to GOD but he did not believe GOD was hearing him but Job’s faith was still in GOD.

Often when we go through situations in life we too believe GOD has abandoned us. We call and HE does not answer. We ask for resolution but resolution does not come. This is a time we can either give up on GOD or dig our heels in and do as Job did, keep our faith and trust in GOD.

I heard a wonderful Pastor years ago say in a sermon, “What you learn in the light, you have to practice in the dark”.

Dark days have either come or will likely come into our lives. What we learn during the precious moments of studying GOD’S word, praying, and fellowshipping with HIM and bathing in the sunshine of HIS presence we have to rely upon when dark days come into our life. Why do the dark days come?

Last week we considered reason’s GOD allowed this to happen to Job:
(1) It is a story handed down through the ages of a righteous person falling upon bad times, which is contrary to common belief then and even today.
(2) Job’s friends reflect this general belief that bad things happen to bad people and good happens to good people. They need to be enlightened.
(3) GOD needed a perfect example of an upright, honorable person, who many would know as a person who was prosperous, a leader, who loved, reverenced and feared GOD. This person would be the one to encounter bad circumstances to dispel the myth that only bad things happen to bad people.
(4) Job is the person GOD chose to teach Job’s friends and others who read or tell of this event that bad things can happen to good people.
(5) Never get the notion if you live close to GOD everything will go your way. GOD uses circumstances to teach us, build our character and to teach others. It may seem harsh to us but the harshness is diminished when we realize nothing is in vain when GOD allows it. There is always purpose.
(6) As we considered last week in 2 Corinthians 2:4 GOD allows us to encounter situations in life to help or comfort others encountering the same or similar situations. Job had helped many people before tragedy came into his life but after the loss of his live stock, servants, (basically lost his lively hood), children, his health but remained faithful to GOD through it all, he could advise others who encountered similar circumstances. I imagine Job appreciated each moment of his life and his family much more after he emerged from his ordeal.
(7) If carried to the end-point who better to be challenged in life than those secure in the arms of CHRIST.

Sunday School Lesson – Respond With Faith – November 6, 2005

This begins a new series of study “When Life Cave’s in”. We will be studying from the Book of Job.

Nov. 6 - Respond with Faith – When bad things happen to good people.

Nov. 13 – Carefully Evaluate Explanations – When others try to explain our suffering or loss.

Nov. 20 – Look to GOD for Wisdom – Where do we turn when trouble comes our way?

Nov. 27 – Honor the Sovereign LORD – Honor GOD in spite of circumstances.

Nationwide Insurance has a TV commercial, “When life comes at you fast”. They show all sorts of calamities happening. Sometimes life does come at us fast and hard. It is nice to have someone we can go to for help when such times come into our life.

There is a branch of theology that studies GOD and suffering. It is called theodicy. It is a study of why do good and godly people suffer?

Our material possessions can be replaced when they are taken away but when it comes to the loss of life, that is another matter. How do we cope with tragedy and life’s tragic circumstances? Job’s life will help us place some of life’s tragic circumstances into perspective as we explore his life.

We are not sure who wrote the Book of Job. Job himself may be the author. It was likely written during the time period of 2000 – 1800 BC.

Job was a real person.
We have the opportunity to see the beginning and conclusion of a major portion of Job’s life, certainly his time of testing. Unfortunately we do not have the opportunity to see our life and the outcome of situations we encounter. We have to trust GOD as Job did through the good times and the bad. Job had some bad moments but the end result he remained faithful to GOD.

We often have to be reminded that GOD is sovereign, all powerful, all knowing and present everywhere, therefore HE is in the perfect position to guide our path along our journey through life.

Sin can pull us outside GOD’S circle of blessings. GOD also allows situations to come into our life to build our character and even to test us. Since GOD is all knowing HE knows how we will handle or respond to circumstances or a test. So what is the purpose of a test, when GOD allows it versus us sinning? We will try to answer these questions in today’s study.

Job was a man of utmost integrity and feared GOD. We as Christians have the righteousness of GOD and the power of THE HOLY SPIRIT to help us through situations we encounter along life’s journey. Being a mature, completely dedicated, active Christian will not prevent bad things from happening to us, our family or friends.

THE LORD revealed a truth to me many years ago. I had read a book “Tortured for CHRIST”. It is about a Christian who was severely tortured for being a Christian in a Communist country.

As I recall about the time I completed the book, I either read about or heard about something bad happening to a Christian in our area. I came unglued. I told GOD that if I had the power HE had I would never allow bad things to happen to one of my children. Touch a hair on one of my children’s head and ZAP! My children would have special protection and every one would know they had better not mess with one of mine.


You know, GOD gave me an answer. HE said, “Suppose once a person became a Christian I did ZAP anyone one who dared lay a finger on them and every Christian had special divine protection. Why do you think people would become a Christian to seek forgiveness for their sins, receive eternal life, love ME and have fellowship with ME or to get special protection?” I said to get special protection. To me that answered my question.

GOD gives us special protection but there are times HE chooses not to provide the protection. We have to trust that HE is in the best position to decide when we are to receive special protection. It will blow our minds when we get to heaven and question GOD about some of the decisions HE made that affected us or our family. HE will tell or show us how HE protected us or families from much harm. How a certain circumstance would have turned out if HE had not intervened or how it was used to fulfill HIS plan.

This world is not our home we are simply passing through. Every human’s destination is heaven. We will all die one day. Some of us will get to heaven sooner than others. When Adam and Eve sinned sin and death came into the world. But GOD through HIS grace (unmerited favor) gave us a way to escape sin and death, HIS ONLY SON JESUS.

CHRIST is GOD’S free gift of grace to us. All we have to do is accept CHRIST as our SAVIOR by asking HIM to forgive us of our sins and to come into our life, simple but of eternal value.

Let’s read Job 1:1-3

Job 1:1-3
1 There was a man in the country of Uz[1] Gn 10:23; 22:21; 36:28 named Job. He was a man of perfect integrity,[2] Jb 2:3; 8:20; 9:20–22 who • feared God and turned away from evil.[3] Jb 2:3; 28:28; Ps 37:27 2 He had seven sons and three daughters. 3 His estate included 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man among all the people of the east.

First we are not exactly sure where the country of Uz is located. Some scholars believe it to be the land of Edom, which is southeast of Judah. Likely the country we call Jordan today.

We know Job was a GOD fearing man of “perfect integrity”. This means he was “complete and upright” one whose character is fully developed without any moral gaps or flaws. He was a person you depend upon to do what was right. He acted as the Priest for his family and sacrificed animals for the sins of his family. Job was a GOD-fearing man, meaning he had a strong belief in GOD and acknowledged GOD as HOLY. Since Job knew GOD was HOLY, Job turned away from evil and resisted temptation.

Job’s family was perfect. He had seven sons and three daughters.

Numbers in the scripture are significant. The number seven (7) represents perfection or completeness. The number three (3) represents wholeness. The children add up to be ten (10), which points to Job’s family as the ideal family.

Job was very wealthy as indicated by the number of animals and servants he owned.

Life for Job was as good as it gets.


Let’s read Job 1: 6-12

6 One day the sons of God[5] Jb 2:1; 38:7; Gn 6:2,4 came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them. 7 The Lord asked Satan, “Where have you come from?” “From roaming through the earth,” Satan answered Him, “and walking around on it.” 8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity, who fears God and turns away from evil.” 9 Satan answered the Lord, “Does Job • fear God for nothing? 10 Haven’t You placed a hedge around him, his household, and everything he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions are spread out in the land. 11 But stretch out Your hand and strike everything he owns, and he will surely curse You to Your face.” 12 “Very well,” the Lord told Satan, “everything he owns is in your power. However, you must not lay a hand on Job [himself]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. .” So Satan went out from the Lord’s presence.

We switch to an event happening in heaven. This event raises some questions but also enlightens us. Did this really happen? Yes.

Satan enters the picture. Satan is a fallen angel. The Hebrew word for Satan refers to “adversary”. He is an accuser and points to all the wrong people do on earth. He is stands before GOD pointing out the wrong we as Christians commit.

He is also called “the devil” in some scripture or Lucifer in Isaiah 14:12 (The Isaiah scripture is given later in the lesson along with an explanation of interpretation.)

Notice verse 10. Satan tells GOD, HE has placed a hedge around Job, his household and everything he owns. Nothing can get to Job or his family because of this wall of protection, so no wonder he is so good. We can pray and ask GOD to place HIS hedge-row around us or our family, friends, etc. This is a request to keep us or those for whom we are praying safe from the evil one and the things he can throw at us.

We make the request but keep in mind it is GOD WHO will make the decision to grant the request.

So let’s consider what we know about what is taking place in heaven based upon scripture. (There is much more to be studied about this subject but we will not at this time.)

There is a gathering in heaven of a heavenly council made up GOD and the angels, plus Satan. This is a meeting where GOD and the angels plan their activities on earth and the angels give an account of themselves. Satan is there, which shows that he is under the authority of GOD.

1 Kings 22:19-23 (This is another account of a meeting of GOD and HIS heavenly council.)

19 Then Micaiah said, “Therefore, hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on His throne, and the whole heavenly • host was standing by Him at His right hand and at His left hand. 20 And the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab to march up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?’ So one was saying this and another was saying that. 21 “Then a spirit came forward, stood before the Lord, and said, ‘I will entice him.’ 22 “The Lord asked him, ‘How?’ “He said, ‘I will go and become a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ “Then He said, ‘You will certainly entice him and prevail. Go and do that.’[8] Dt 13:1–5; Ezk 14:9; 23 “You see, the Lord has put a lying spirit into the mouth of all these prophets of yours, and the Lord has pronounced disaster against you.”

GOD created all the angels, those who obey HIM and those who rebelled against HIM. The key is HE controls them all. It also shows even though GOD created them, HE also gives them the right to choose. GOD has complete authority and power over all of them.

Satan is an angel of great beauty and wisdom who became corrupt and rebelled against GOD.

Satan wants to be GOD and pride was the beginning of Satan’s downfall.

1 John 3:8
8 The one who commits sin is of the Devil,[4] Jn 8:44 for the Devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose: to destroy the Devil’s works.

1 Corinthians 12:14-15
14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

Satan can appear as something good, as an angel of light but his plan is to conquer and destroy. He does this by appearing to be the real thing and once we are ensnared he turns the tables and says got you. Only we think it is GOD who has deceived us or has let us down. Folks we are battling a clever foe. But remember 1 John 4:4:

4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

As a Christian THE HOLY SPIRIT dwells within each of us and represents GOD. GOD is greater than all. GOD is our protector.

So why does GOD allow us to be tested or have to battle Satan? To build character within us and let us see that we have an adversary who roams earth seeking whom he can devour. Keep in mind Job’s character was complete. We as Christians are secure in THE LORD but we live in an unholy world. Satan has plenty of opportunity to attack Christians and non-Christian alike. We as Christians need to know how to respond when we encounter situations which emanate from Satan or an unholy world.
The following scriptures in Isaiah and Ezekiel were addressed to the kings of Babylon and Tyre. Some Bible scholars believe they also refer to Satan himself.

Isaiah 14:12-15

12 Shining morning star,[3] Or Day Star, son of the dawn how you have fallen from the heavens! You destroyer of nations, you have been cut down to the ground. 13 You said to yourself: “I will ascend to the heavens; I will set up my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mount of the [gods’]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. assembly, in the remotest parts of the North.[4] Or of Zaphon 14 I will ascend above the highest clouds; I will make myself like the • Most High.” 15 But you will be brought down to Sheol into the deepest regions of the • Pit.

Ezekiel 28:11-19

11 The word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Son of man, lament[11] Ezk 27:2 for the king of Tyre and say to him: This is what the Lord God says: You were the seal[12] Or sealer of perfection,[13] Hb obscure full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.[14] Ezk 27:3 13 You were in Eden,[15] Ezk 31:9,16,18; 36:35; Gn 2:8 the garden of God. Every kind of precious stone covered you: carnelian, topaz, and diamond,[16] Hb obscure beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire,[17] Or lapis lazuli turquoise[18] Or malachite, or garnet and emerald.[19] Or beryl Your mountings and settings were crafted in gold;[20] Ex 28:17–20; 39:10–13; Rv 21:19–20 they were prepared on the day you were created. 14 You were an anointed guardian cherub,[21] Ezk 10:2–19; Gn 3:24; Ex 25:18–22 for[22] Or With an anointed guardian cherub I had appointed you. So I expelled you in disgrace from the mountain of God, and banished you, guardian cherub,[24] Or and the guardian cherub banished you from among the fiery stones. 17 Your heart became proud because of your beauty; For the sake of your splendor[25] Ezk 27:3–4 you corrupted your wisdom. So I threw you down to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings. 18 You profaned your sanctuaries by the magnitude of your iniquities in your dishonest trade. So I sent out fire from within you, and it consumed you.[26] Ezk 19:14 I reduced you to ashes on the ground in the sight of everyone watching you. 19 All those who know you among the nations are appalled at you.[27] Ezk 26:16; 27:35 You have become an object of horror and will never exist again.”[28] Ezk 26:21; 27:36

Based upon Job 1:6-12 we learn a great deal about Satan;
v He is accountable to GOD. All angelic beings good or bad must present themselves before GOD.
v GOD knew Satan was intent upon attacking Job. (Have you considered MY servant Job? Satan considered Job but because of the hedge Satan did not go any further.)
v Satan can only be at one place at a time. Satan has demons or evil spirits who are also fallen angels who help him.
v Satan is a created being and has limits placed upon him by GOD.
v Satan cannot read our minds or foretell the future. As in our story of Job if Satan knew the future he would have known Job would not give in to what he was about to throw upon him.
v Satan has to get GOD’S permission to attack us as Christians. It also takes GOD’S power to defeat Satan in our life. That is why our relationship with our FATHER is vital.
v GOD places limits on Satan and what he can do to GOD’S children.
v We do know that Satan is real and very active upon earth. As he told GOD he was roaming around earth. Satan does this today.
v Therefore it is imperative that we remain close to THE FATHER WHO has the power to control Satan and his demons. CHRIST is the power in our life to defeat Satan and for us to emerge a situation victorious. The power of the shed blood of CHRIST and the power of THE WORD of GOD. Ephesians chapter 6 tells us how to prepare for spiritual war.



We could spend much time studying Satan but it more important for us to know our FATHER and keep our minds focused upon HIM. So I ask our FATHER to protect us as we study and to enlighten the eyes of our heart.

You likely have the same question I do, why did GOD allow Job to be tested? GOD knew Job would pass the test but a lot of people and animals were killed because of the test.

This event in Job’s life is a message to all people throughout the ages that no one is exempt for trouble. If we, as GOD fearing people, always had it good and prospered then people would serve THE LORD because the protection and prosperity HE gives us rather than serving THE LORD because of seeing the need for forgiveness of sin and the need to be born-again into GOD’S family through the rebirth of our spirit. Salvation requires faith in CHRIST and what HE did for us on THE CROSS.

Satan tells GOD that the only reason Job fears HIM is because of his prosperity. Job has the good life, so he is not going to do something that will rub GOD the wrong way. GOD said check him out. You may find he loves ME regardless of his prosperity.

During tests and trials in our life, GOD expects us to be drawn closer to HIM and for us to express our faith in HIM during these times which is a positive witness both to fellow Christians and non-Christians.

2 Corinthians 1:3-7 gives us a reason we encounter troubles in our life; to help others with the help we ourselves have received. I know we tend to listen to those who have encountered a situation in their life and have been able to deal with it more so than those who have not encountered a situation we are facing. They have been there and gotten through the crisis.




1 Corinthians 1:3-7
The God of Comfort
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. 4 He comforts us in all our affliction,[2] Or trouble, or tribulation, or trials, or oppression; the Gk word has a lit meaning of being under pressure. so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so our comfort overflows through Christ. 6 If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is experienced in the endurance of the same sufferings that we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that as you share in the sufferings, so you will share in the comfort.

Job’s family is wiped out, except for his wife. Some speculate that the reason his wife was not killed is that she added to his misery.

Let’s read Job 1: 20-22

20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved[9] Jr 7:29; Mc 1:16 his head.[10] = in mourning; Gn 37:29,34; Jos 7:6 He fell to the ground and worshiped, 21 saying: Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will leave this life.[11] Lit will return there; Ps 139:13,15 The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away. Praise the name of the Lord.[12] Ps 113:2; 118:26 22 Throughout all this Job did not sin or blame God for anything.[13] Lit or ascribe blame to God [14] Jb 2:10

The prior verses tell us that Job lost just about everything, his children, servants and animals either killed or taken. But notice in verses 20 -22, Job tears his clothes, shaves his head, which are signs of deep mourning and falls to the ground and worships GOD. Job did not sin or blame GOD. Job passed the test.



But Satan cannot leave it alone. Satan approaches GOD the second time regarding Job and says in essence “no wonder Job did not blame you, his life was spared. If you will let me cause him health problems he will curse YOU”. GOD said go for it, you just cannot take his life.

Let’s read Job 2: 7-10

7 So Satan left the Lord’s presence and infected Job with incurable boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head.[3] Dt 28:27,35 8 Then Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself while he sat among the ashes.[4] = in mourning; Jb 42:6; 2 Sm 13:19 9 His wife said to him, “Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die!” 10 “You speak as a foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept only good from God and not adversity?” Throughout all this Job did not sin in what he said.[5] Lit sin with his lips

So Job is infected with incurable boils all over his body. (Keep this in mind, incurable boils. When we get to the end of the lesson we find Job has been cured. Guess who cured the incurable boils which Satan inflected upon Job?) Job scrapes himself with a piece of broken pottery while sitting in ashes. This is an act of deep grief, sitting on top of ashes that had been things of value at one time.

Now we see the role of Job’s wife. “Curse GOD and die”, she said. It could be that she saw Job suffering so much that he should curse GOD so GOD would take him out of his misery. The words Job uses imply she was not being a GOD-fearing woman but trying to convince Job to yield to what Satan wanted rather than trusting GOD.

We see Job’s response. “Should we accept only good from GOD and not adversity?”

Though it all, Job did not sin.

This is a study that challenges us all. When problems in life surround us our relationship to GOD is tested.

We all need the support of family, friends and special prayer when these times fall upon us. Most of all we need to know GOD is our refuge and strength during these times in our life.

May our LORD enlighten the eyes of our heart to HIS provisions for us during times of trouble.

Job and His Family
1 There was a man in the country of Uz[1] Gn 10:23; 22:21; 36:28 named Job. He was a man of perfect integrity,[2] Jb 2:3; 8:20; 9:20–22 who • feared God and turned away from evil.[3] Jb 2:3; 28:28; Ps 37:27 2 He had seven sons and three daughters. 3 His estate included 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man among all the people of the east. 4 His sons used to have banquets, each at his house in turn. They would send an invitation to their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 Whenever a round of banqueting was over, Job would send [for his children]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. and purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for[4] Lit for the number of all of them. For Job thought: Perhaps my children have sinned, having cursed God in their hearts. This was Job’s regular practice.
Satan’s First Test of Job
6 One day the sons of God[5] Jb 2:1; 38:7; Gn 6:2,4 came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them. 7 The Lord asked Satan, “Where have you come from?” “From roaming through the earth,” Satan answered Him, “and walking around on it.” 8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity, who fears God and turns away from evil.” 9 Satan answered the Lord, “Does Job • fear God for nothing? 10 Haven’t You placed a hedge around him, his household, and everything he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions are spread out in the land. 11 But stretch out Your hand and strike everything he owns, and he will surely curse You to Your face.” 12 “Very well,” the Lord told Satan, “everything he owns is in your power. However, you must not lay a hand on Job [himself]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. .” So Satan went out from the Lord’s presence. 13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and reported: “While the oxen were plowing and the donkeys grazing nearby, 15 the Sabeans[6] Jb 6:19; Gn 10:7 swooped down and took them away. Chapter 2
Satan’s Second Test of Job
1 One day the sons of God[1] Jb 1:6; 38:7; Gn 6:2,4 came again to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them to present himself before the Lord. 2 The Lord asked Satan, “Where have you come from?” “From roaming through the earth,” Satan answered Him, “and walking around on it.” 3 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? Job’s Three Friends
11 Now when Job’s three friends—Eliphaz the Temanite,[6] Gn 36:11; Jr 49:7 Bildad the Shuhite,[7] Gn 25:2 and Zophar the Naamathite—heard about all this adversity that had happened to him, each of them came from his home. They met together to go and offer sympathy and comfort[8] Jb 42:11; Ps 69:20; Jr 16:5 to him. 12 When they looked from a distance, they could [barely]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. recognize him.
