 Bible Study – Signs (6) – The Sign of HIS Light – John 9:1-33 – April 6, 2025

Only through JESUS can we truly see.

Our focus scripture is John 9:1-33.

Many of us have witnessed faith healers on television or among religious circles. Scripture reveals that healing is one of the Gifts of The Holy Spirit; there are a number of other Spiritual Gifts that equip those who have experienced Spiritual Birth, through faith in JESUS, to use to minister.

There are many Spiritual Gifts. Let’s read 1 Corinthians 12 that reveals some of the Spiritual Gifts:

Concerning Spiritual Gifts

12 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers, and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. ² You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. ³ Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

⁴ There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. ⁵ There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. ⁶ There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

⁷ Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. ⁸ To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, ⁹ to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, ¹⁰ to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,^[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.^[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

This is a list of a few Spiritual Gifts but there are many, others, and HE gives to whom HE chooses. Spirit-born people can desire a certain Gift, but GOD gives.

Folks, this is vital. “GOD GIVES TO WHOM HE CHOOSES!!!”

However, Spirit-born people can desire or ask for a certain Spiritual Gift but be sure your desired Gift comes from GOD.

Friends of mine had the gift of speaking in tongues. I thought I needed to speak in tongues and tried. Our LORD led me to explore tongues to a point until the still small voice of the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said, “You do not need the gift of tongues. I speak in many different ways, through music, poems, paintings, the written word, My Word, through others, sunrises, sunsets, and so many ways. If you ever need another language, I will give it to you.” I have traveled to a number of countries and have been able to get around. This is not to say that “tongues” is not important. I know people who speak in tongues. Ms. Corrie ten Boom had a prayer language and some in my family.

The key is what JESUS taught HIS disciples as in Matthew 17:20

“Because of your little faith,” he told them. “For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

We must keep in mind that JESUS told us in John 5:19-23:

¹⁹ Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, the Son is not able to do anything on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father^[e] does, the Son likewise does these things. ²⁰ For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing, and he will show him greater works than these so that you will be amazed. ²¹ And just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to whom he wants. ²² The Father, in fact, judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son, ²³ so that all people may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

Bottom line “The TWO are ONE” and in fact the Three are ONE/Trinity – FATHER-SON and HOLY SPIRIT. When a person is “Spirit-born” he or she becomes one with GOD/JESUS/Holy SPIRIT.

In studying for this study, I came across the word “filial” in reference to JESUS and GOD, JESUS’ FATHER. The definition of “filial - is “Filial comes from Latin filius, meaning "son," and filia, "daughter"; in English, it applies to any gender. The word has long carried the dutiful sense "owed to a parent by a child," as found in phrases as "filial respect" and "filial piety."

Thus, JESUS and GOD are in lock step with each other and trust each other completely. When JESUS gave up HIS human life, HE had to trust GOD, HIS FATHER to give HIM eternal life.

The same is true for everyone who places their faith in JESUS as the promised Messiah. Because in doing so, it triggers the miracle of Spiritual Birth. The Holy Spirit, the Divine sperm unites with the human spirit, for example, the egg. Spiritual conception takes place quicker than the twinkle of the eye! Thus, the term “born-again” and this conception is eternal.

Guess what? All who are Spirit-born will have an eternal body fashioned by GOD, which will be released at the instant, as a born-again person, you die physically.

In our series of lessons, we are building a foundation of why a person can place his/her faith in JESUS and know that JESUS is the promised Messiah.

Let’s read John 9:1-33:

The Sixth Sign: Healing a Man Born Blind

9 As he (JESUS) was passing by, he saw a man blind from birth. ² His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

Keep in mind that the trinity is GOD, The FATHER, GOD, The SON and GOD, The Holy Spirit. The three are ONE! In JESUS, all three are present. Full and complete communication is taking place.

GOD had a plan which would be revealed through this person blind since birth that would confirm JESUS as The Promised Messiah then and all days to follow.

³ “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” Jesus answered. “This came about so that God’s works might be displayed in him. ⁴ We^[a] must do the works of him who sent me^[b] while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work. ⁵ As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

JESUS is still The Light of the world and we who have been “born-again” are still the light in Spiritual darkness and the battle for the souls of people still rages. “Spirit-born” people are the light of the world.

Dear FATHER, all who have been Spirit-born know they are secure in their faith in JESUS, they are the light that still shines in our world. Give each “Spirit-born” person the strength to let the light of JESUS be a beacon of hope to those who do not know JESUS as their Savior.

⁶ After he (JESUS) said these things he spit on the ground, made some mud from the saliva, and spread the mud on his eyes. ⁷ “Go,” he told him, “Wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means “Sent” or “gushing forth.”). So, he left, washed, and came back seeing.

⁸ His neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar said, “Isn’t this the one who used to sit begging?” ⁹ Some said, “He’s the one.” Others were saying, “No, but he looks like him.”

He kept saying, “I’m the one.”

Miracles are hard to reconcile in our human minds.

¹⁰ So they asked him, “Then how were your eyes opened?”

¹¹ He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So, when I went and washed, I received my sight.”

He made mud and put it onto your blind eyes? He told you to go to Siloam and wash and you receive your sight?

Miracles cannot be explained because they come from The ONE TRUE GOD, YAWEH.

¹² “Where is he?” they asked.

“I don’t know,” he said.

Why did the man blind since birth not know who healed him?

It was those who had religious authority to explore and dig deeper with the hope of finding truth. That is why people search for truth. When truth is revealed, all have the choice to accept it or reject it.

The Healed Man’s Testimony

¹³ They brought the man who used to be blind to the Pharisees. ¹⁴ The day that Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes was a Sabbath. ¹⁵ Then the Pharisees asked him again how he received his sight.

“He put mud on my eyes,” he told them. “I washed and I can see.”

¹⁶ Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, because he doesn’t keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a sinful man perform such signs?” And there was a division among them.

¹⁷ Again they asked the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he opened your eyes?”

A clue finally comes out from the man blind since birth.

“He’s a prophet,” he said.

The blind man did not know until he did what JESUS told him to do that his sight would be healed. The blind man was obedient to the command of JESUS, and he was healed.

¹⁸ The Jews did not believe this about him—that he was blind and received sight—until they summoned the parents of the one who had received his sight.

¹⁹ They asked them, “Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”

²⁰ “We know this is our son and that he was born blind,” his parents answered. ²¹ “But we don’t know how he now sees, and we don’t know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he’s of age. He will speak for himself.” ²² His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews, since the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed him as the Messiah, he would be banned from the synagogue. ²³ This is why his parents said, “He’s of age; ask him.”

²⁴ So a second time they summoned the man who had been blind and told him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”

²⁵ He answered, “Whether or not he’s a sinner, I don’t know. One thing I do know: I was blind, and now I can see!”

²⁶ Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”

²⁷ “I already told you,” he said, “and you didn’t listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don’t want to become his disciples too, do you?”

²⁸ They ridiculed him: “You’re that man’s disciple, but we’re Moses’s disciples. ²⁹ We know that God has spoken to Moses. But this man—we don’t know where he’s from.”

³⁰ “This is an amazing thing!” the man told them. “You don’t know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes. ³¹ We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does his will, he listens to him. ³² Throughout history^[c] no one has ever heard of someone opening the eyes of a person born blind. ³³ If this man were not from God, he wouldn’t be able to do anything.”

³⁴ “You were born entirely in sin,” they replied, “and are you trying to teach us?” Then they threw him out.

Spiritual Blindness

³⁵ Jesus heard that they had thrown the man out, and when he found him, he asked, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”^[d]

³⁶ “Who is he, Sir, that I may believe in him?” he asked.

³⁷ Jesus answered, “You have seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”

³⁸ “I believe, Lord!” he said, and he worshiped him.

WOW! The man blind from birth knew he had encountered a special person who had the power to heal him of his blindness. When JESUS placed the mud on his eyes, he could not see who did it.

³⁹ Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, in order that those who do not see will see and those who do see will become blind.”

Those who seek will find and those who are self-sufficient become blind.

Are you a seeker or have you found the pearl of great price?

JESUS still seeks those who are lost Spiritually. Sadly, there are those who have made up their minds about eternity and it does not include placing their faith in JESUS.

⁴⁰ Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and asked him, “We aren’t blind too, are we?”

⁴¹ “If you were blind,” Jesus told them, “you wouldn’t have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.

Have you asked JESUS to forgive you for your sins and for JESUS to come into your heart? If not, now is that opportunity for you to be Spirit-born and become an eternal child of GOD through faith in JESUS.

Dear JESUS forgive me for all of my sins and come into my heart that I can have eternal life through the miracle of Spiritual birth.

If you prayed that prayer or something similar, then thank JESUS for saving you and making you an eternal child of GOD.

Just as a new-born baby needs nourishment and care so do you.

Reading and applying GOD’S Word, The Bible to your life is Spiritual nourishment, and prayer is communication with GOD and JESUS. Ask JESUS to lead and guide you to the church or fellowship where you can grow Spiritually and apply what is being revealed to you as you walk with JESUS.

My prayer is that you will grow Spiritually as you obediently walk with JESUS in HIS Power.
