Bible Study – A Name Like No Other (1) – The Importance of GOD’S Name – December 3, 2023

This series will carry us to January 7, 2024.

Our focus scripture is Exodus3:1-6, 9-15.

 - GOD’S name reveals that HE is all-powerful; GOD whom we can completely trust.

GOD has many names, such as:

- Jehovah Rohi: The LORD id my shepherd

- Jehovah Jireh: The LORD shall Provide

- Jehovah-Rapha: The LORD Who heals

- Jehovah-Nissi: The LORD is my banner

My favorite name for GOD is “I AM and I will be what I will be.” That to me is total supremacy and HE desires to have you to be HIS eternal Son or Daughter through faith in JESUS.

First, let’s consider the setting. Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible, as we know them today – Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. What we are considering today is Moses first encounter with GOD.

We need to adjust our thinking back to the time when GOD was revealing Himself to Moses. Moses’ life story gives us a review of GOD’S activity in him and through him. Moses had his ups and downs.

Our scripture base is from the Book of Exodus; Moses was giving his account of when he and GOD first met. GOD had already revealed Himself to Abram/Abraham. A man-made timeline establishes these times for those who knew GOD:

Abraham Born 2166 BC, Isaac 2068 BC, Joseph rules Egypt 1885 BC, Moses born 1526 BC, Exodus from Egypt 1446 BC. This gives us the human timeline. We see that GOD had already revealed Himself to Abraham.

Our lesson is based upon GOD revealing Himself to Moses for the first time and Moses getting GOD to reveal HIS name to him.

Moses’ discovery of GOD, actually, GOD reveal HIS presence to Moses. At first, it was physical. When Moses built the right relationship with GOD their relationship deepened. Awesome! We can learn much from the walk of Moses with GOD. But first let’s get acquainted with both Moses and GOD. Back to the events unfolding between Moses and GOD.

We get to look over the shoulders of Moses as he encounters and builds his foundation of faith with GOD.

Put yourself in Moses’ spot and these events were happening to you. Discovering GOD through the life of Moses.

GOD introduces Himself to Moses –

We know that Moses was a Hebrew and his mother place him in a water-resistant basket and placed him in the Nile River because the Pharaoh was having boy babies killed.

We read in Exodus 2:1-10: Moses’s Birth and Adoption

Now a man from the family of Levi married a Levite woman. The woman became pregnant and gave birth to a son; when she saw that he was beautiful,[a] she hid him for three months. But when she could no longer hide him, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with asphalt and pitch. She placed the child in it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. Then his sister stood at a distance in order to see what would happen to him.

Pharaoh’s daughter went down to bathe at the Nile while her servant girls walked along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds, sent her slave girl, took it, opened it, and saw him, the child—and there he was, a little boy, crying. She felt sorry for him and said, “This is one of the Hebrew boys.”

Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go and call a Hebrew woman who is nursing to nurse the boy for you?”

“Go,” Pharaoh’s daughter told her. So, the girl went and called the boy’s mother. Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child and nurse him for me, and I will pay your wages.” So, the woman took the boy and nursed him. 10 When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses,[b] “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”

We know that Moses grew up in the Pharoh’s palace but he had a passion for the Hebrew people. Moses killed an Egyptian for treating a Hebrew slave harshly. Moses fled from Egypt to Midian. He ended up herding sheep for his father-in-law, a Midianite priest. The Midianites were connected to the Israelites and it is believed they worshipped Jehovah.

This is the lead-in to GOD meeting Moses and Moses meeting GOD. Moses was just going about his business when something out of the ordinary caught Moses attention. GOD does that. That is why HE placed the rainbow in the sky for all to see and to ask questions.

Moses was taking his father-in-law’s sheep to a better area on Mount Horeb (The Mountain of GOD) to graze, when he encountered something out of the ordinary.

Bible Study – A Name Like No Other (1) – The Importance of GOD’S Name – December 3, 2023

This series will carry us to January 7, 2024.

Our focus scripture for this lesson is Exodus 3:1-6, 9-15.

-         GOD’S name reveals HE is the all-powerful; GOD whom we can completely trust.

GOD has many names, such as:

             -    Jehovah Rohi: The LORD my Shepherd

-    Jehovah Jireh: The LORD Shall Provide

-         Jehovah-Rapha: The Lord Who Heals.

             -    Jehovah-Nissi: The Lord Is My Banner.

Let’s read Exodus 2:11-15: (How Moses got to Midian)

11 Years later,[c] after Moses had grown up, he went out to his own people[d] and observed their forced labor. He saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his people. 12 Looking all around and seeing no one, he struck the Egyptian dead and hid him in the sand. 13 The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you attacking your neighbor?” [e]

14 “Who made you a commander and judge over us?” the man replied. “Are you planning to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?”

Then Moses became afraid and thought, “What I did is certainly known.”

15 When Pharaoh heard about this, he tried to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in the land of Midian, and sat down by a well.

This put Moses in the area and position where GOD wanted him to be. Do you sense that GOD has moved you around to be at a certain place at a certain time?

Let’s read Exodus 3:1-6: Moses and the Burning Bush

Meanwhile, Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro,[a] the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb,[b] the mountain of God. Then the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire within a bush. As Moses looked, he saw that the bush was on fire but was not consumed. So Moses thought, “I must go over and look at this remarkable sight. Why isn’t the bush burning up?”

Meanwhile, Moses was doing his thing when something out of the ordinary caught his eye. Often, our curiosity leads us to discover things of great value ----

GOD got Moses’ attention and Moses came closer to where GOD was.  GOD spoke to Moses.

When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called out to him from the bush, “Moses, Moses!”

“Here I am”

GOD sees and knows what we are doing. When we move closer to HIM, HE responds to our move. As we move closer to GOD through faith in JESUS, HE moves closer to us.

When GOD speaks to us, HE wants us to hear HIM. GOD does not always speak out of a burning bush but often HE speaks to us in a still small voice. So, we must listen ---

And Moses said, “Here I am.”

“Do not come closer,” he said. “Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Then he continued, “I am the God of your father,[c] the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God.

This statement reveals Moses’ ancestors were alive with GOD in Heaven.

GOD said, I AM the GOD of Abraham! Present tense. These patriots had been physically dead for many years but GOD was still their GOD. They were with HIM.

Let’s read Exodus 3:7-12:

Then the Lord said, “I have observed the misery of my people in Egypt, and have heard them crying out because of their oppressors. I know about their sufferings, and I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and to bring them from that land to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the territory of the Canaanites, Hethites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. So because the Israelites’ cry for help has come to me, and I have also seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them, 10 therefore, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh so that you may lead my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.”

GOD knows what is going on upon earth and especially with HIS chosen people. Did you know GOD has chosen you! Even though you are chosen, you must accept must accept JESUS as your Savior.

GOD knows what is happening between Israel and Hamas. FATHER, both need JESUS as their Savior.

11 But Moses asked God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and that I should bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”

If GOD calls us to accomplish a task for HIM, most of us will feel unworthy. But the beauty is that HE equips and walks with us.

12 He (GOD) answered, “I will certainly be with you, and this will be the sign to you that I am the one who sent you: when you bring the people out of Egypt, you will all worship[d] God at this mountain.”

GOD does not call us to abandon us but to go with us each step of the way. HIS desire is for HIS Children to Glorify HIM when we are doing HIS will and HE has called us to accomplish HIS will and purpose.

Let’s read Exodus 3:13-15:

13 Then Moses asked God, “If I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what should I tell them?”

This was very important because GOD had a plan to introduce the Egyptians to Himself.

14 God replied to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.[e] This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the Israelites: The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever; this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.

I have found this name, I AM, for GOD to be so all encompassing and all powerful. GOD’S name is solid and can be trusted.

Consider Exodus 29:45 And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God.

Israel is still the apple of GOD’S eye, as are all who receive salvation or yet to receive salvation. You have not committed such a sin that GOD will not able to forgive. JESUS gave HIS life for the Israelites and Hamas. HE reaches out to them. And there are Jews who have accepted JESUS as their Savior.

They refer to themselves as completed Jews or Messianic Jews. I had a work associate who is a Messianic Jew and I had the joy of attending their worship. I love the Jewish music and food.

How did or has GOD revealed Himself to you? If HE has not, ask HIM to do so. GOD is magnificent and HIS love for all humans is expressed through JESUS’ birth, life, death and resurrection from the physically dead. After HIS resurrection, JESUS spent 40 days upon earth. Then, JESUS ascended into Heaven and took HIS seat at the right hand of GOD, HIS FATHER. When a person asks JESUS to forgive him/her for his/her sins, the person is forgiven and JESUS comes into that person’s life giving him/her eternal life, through the miracle of Spiritual birth/being born-again Spiritually. This is confirmed by the indwelling Holy Spirit. Our first birth was physical and chosen by our parents. we had nothing to do with that conception. However, our second conception and rebirth are Spiritual. We decided whether or not we wanted to be Spiritually born into GOD’S eternal Family. That decision is yours to make. Be wise! Choose Life! Blessings!!!
