Results of Knowing Jesus - Mark 8, 9,10 - September 27, 2009

Bible Study – Results of Knowing Jesus – September 27, 2009

This is the fourth study in our series entitled “Know Jesus.”

Our scripture is Mark 8:34-38; 9:33-37; 10:32-34.

What does “Results of Knowing JESUS” mean?

Last week, we studied the disciples encountering a strong wind on the Sea of Galilee and JESUS walking on the water.

HE fed over 5,000 people and these people wanted to make HIM king, JESUS sent HIS disciples away in a boat and HE stayed back on the mountain to pray. When JESUS had finished praying on the mountain, HE could likely see the disciples struggling to row their boat against a strong head wind. JESUS went to them by walking on the water. The scripture leads us to consider that JESUS acted as if HE would walk past them. The disciples were terrified and they cry out to HIM. JESUS cries back to them to “take courage, It is I.” When HE got into the boat the wind ceased. This is a clear example of what it means to know JESUS. It is the results of their knowing JESUS that HE went to them. When they called to HIM, HE changed directions and got into the boat. When HE became intimate with their circumstance, the wind ceased. JESUS went to the aid of the disciples, when they cried out to HIM. JESUS walked to them to demonstrate that HE was greater than the storm they were encountering.

When the storms of life come our way, JESUS knows and can see from HIS vantage point what we are encountering. HE comes close to us. HE wants us to ask HIM to come to our aid. When we do, HE responds. When HE comes into our life (gets into our boat so-to-speak), the circumstances take on a different meaning because we know HIM and that HE is with us. Knowing HIM and having HIM become a part of our life gets us safely to the peaceful shore, just as HE got HIS disciples safely to shore. The disciples still had to row the boat but the head winds were under control. This does not mean the journey will be easy. It means that the storms of life are better tolerated when we know JESUS is right along our side as we go through the storms.

As believers we have choices. GOD never takes away our right to choose. But how we choose depends upon our spiritual growth, maturity and relationship. The Apostle Paul speaks of carnal Christians in 1 Corinthians 3:1-4. The Corinthian Christians were not ready for the solid food of Paul's teaching:

1 And I (Paul), brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. 3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? (KJV)

We can be believers but still be led by the flesh. I know I was and still find the flesh raising its head. It is hard to die to self and the rule of the flesh. My relationship with the LORD offers me a greater opportunity to die to self daily than trying to do so in my own strength. CHRIST understands our struggle.

The only bumper sticker I would even consider putting on my car would be “I am a Christian but still under construction.” Do I know I will go to heaven when I die? YES!!! Because of my goodness? NO!!! It is because I have asked CHRIST to forgive me of my sins and to come into my life. I am going to heaven on the credentials of CHRIST. HE shed HIS blood for my sins and I have been born into HIS Kingdom. The Good News is that HE shed HIS blood for your sins as well. Your part is to ask HIM to forgive you of your sins and accept HIM as your SAVIOR. Making HIM the LORD of your life can happen at the same moment of salvation or it may come later in your spiritual journey.

Let’s read Mark 8:34-38:

Take Up Your Cross

34 Summoning the crowd along with His disciples, He said to them, “If anyone wants to be My follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For whoever wants to save his • life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me and the gospel will save it. 36 For what does it benefit a man to gain the whole world yet lose his life? 37 What can a man give in exchange for his life? 38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

In JESUS’ day, when a person was going to be crucified, he had to carry his own cross. JESUS had to carry HIS own cross to Calvary until Simon the Cyrenian came to HIS aid and carried HIS cross for HIM.

In essence, JESUS was saying when you follow ME; you need to die to self. Does HE mean acts of asceticism where a person denies himself of certain things or comforts? Some religions require those aspiring to be priests or holy men to deny themselves essentials such as water for a long period and walk a long distance. JESUS was not speaking of this.

In Ephesians 4:22-24 the Apostle Paul was writing to the Christians in Ephesus:

22 you took off[9] Or Jesus. This means: take off (as a command) your former way of life, the old man that is corrupted by deceitful desires; 23 you are being renewed[10] Or desires; renew (as a command) in the spirit of your minds; 24 you put on[11] Or minds; and put on (as a command) the new man, the one created according to God’s [likeness]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. [12] Col 3:10 in righteousness and purity of the truth.

This may help us to understand dying to self or denying self. When we become believers, GOD’S desire is for HIS children to take off the old life and don our new life in CHRIST. Believers are representing CHRIST from the instant they accept HIM until the moment they depart their earth suit to be with their LORD.

We know our flesh wants to rule our lives. GOD wants to rule our lives through obedience to the leadership of the HOLY SPIRIT. When people look at denying themselves to become believers, it is overwhelming. Many decide they cannot deny themselves to become believers, so self rules. Even when a person becomes a believer, he/she often find that he/she does not have the desire to drop some of the things that may compromise his/her witness, again self rules. Then there is defining a compromise. This is why believers need the relationship with CHRIST which the HOLY SPIRIT brings a compromise to our attention and helps us to work on it.

JESUS said during HIS earthly ministry that following the Ten Commandments was not enough. HE said if you look upon a woman, other than your wife, with lustful eyes it was the same as adultery or if a person hates his brother, it was the same as killing him. Obeying GOD’S commands are all about the heart of a person. The point HE was making was that we are all sinners in thought or deed and there is only one thing that will wash away all of our sins – HIS shed blood. This is why JESUS died upon the cross. HE gave HIS life in exchange for the life of every person. JESUS knew it was impossible for any human to earn his/her way to GOD. That is why HE gave HIS life for every human, who will believe in HIM.

So when we consider “denying ourselves” it is impossible without the relationship with GOD through CHRIST. This is over and beyond salvation. Salvation is ground zero. From ground zero a person willingly builds upon the foundation of CHRIST. All believers build. What do we use to build? Do we decide what we want to use as building materials or do we seek to know JESUS first by reading and studying GOD’S Word and then building as directed by the HOLY SPIRIT.

Apart from the relationship it is near impossible to build the right relationship which will help believers to grow and mature to the point where they can truly deny themselves and follow HIM.

When JESUS said to follow HIM, HE meant that we go hand in hand with HIM. It means to accompany HIM and go with HIM.

JESUS made it clear that believers have a choice, either deny themselves and follow HIM or follow their own desires. Those who choose to follow their own desires will not find the joy of obediently serving HIM. They will also miss the rewards resulting from obedient service.

JESUS was speaking with authority because HE knew the truth. HE came from heaven to earth. HE knew what was in store for all obedient believers. HE was telling all would-be believers and believers that nothing in this temporary world was comparable to eternity in heaven. Denying self and following HIM are the best investments a person can make. His/her rewards of obedience are eternal. Why not trust your life to HIM now.

Let’s read Mark 9:33-37:

Who is the Greatest?

33 Then they came to Capernaum. When He was in the house, He asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” 34 But they were silent, because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest. 35 Sitting down, He called the Twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 Then He took a child, had him stand among them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes[12] Or Whoever receives one little child such as this in My name welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me does not welcome Me, but Him who sent Me.”

JESUS had been busy healing the sick, casting out demons, preaching and teaching in the area around Galilee. JESUS had taken HIS inner-circle, Peter, James and John, with HIM when HE went up on the Mount of Transfiguration. When JESUS and HIS disciples were returning to Capernaum, JESUS heard HIS disciples discussing who would be the greatest. Why had this subject come up? We can only speculate and here are some possible answers:

- After the feeding of over 5,000 people, the people wanted to make JESUS their earthly king. Did this whet their appetite for a position in this new kingdom?
- JESUS walked upon water and calmed the wind. The disciples knew that JESUS had a special relationship with GOD, which would ensure success.
- JESUS had told the disciples that HE would be betrayed, be killed and would rise from the dead three (3) days later. Knowing that JESUS had a special relationship with GOD, did they not believe what HE was saying?
- The disciples knew that something was coming to a head but they could not comprehend what it was. They knew what was required to conquer a country – power. JESUS had the power.
- Peter had earlier correctly identified JESUS as the Messiah in Mark 8:29:
29 “But you,” He (JESUS) asked them again, “who do you say that I am?” Peter answered Him, “You are the • Messiah!” Yet, Peter denied JESUS three (3) times, which tells me that he did not understand the scope of JESUS’ mission until after the resurrection and even possibly after the coming of the HOLY SPIRIT. It was Peter who preached on the Day of Pentecost and over 3,000 people became believers.
- It seems that the disciples were still looking for some form of earthly kingdom and they wanted to be part of it. Did the fact that JESUS chose Peter, James and John to go with HIM on the Mount of Transfiguration, along with their account of the event, cause the other disciples to question who would be chosen to serve in the new kingdom? The other nine (9) did not want to be left out. Did they think the inner-circle had a leg up on them for a plum position in the New Kingdom?

JESUS knew the hearts of HIS disciples and HE called them together in an effort to clear the air regarding who HE considered the greatest. The greatest in the eyes of JESUS was those who serve others. The greatest according to the world standard are those who are served by others. It is important to understand that it is not serving according to our desires but serving according to the leadership of GOD though the HOLY SPIRIT.

The Greeks had three (3) different words for servant:
- Servant (leitourgeo) referring to political office.
- Servant (latreuo) referring to religious service.
- Servant (diakoneo) referring to those who give personal help to others.

Mark used the Greek word (diakoneo) which refers to those who give help to others. It is the same Greek word that is used for deacon.

JESUS used a child to illustrate what HE is trying to convey to them. The use of the word “child” could apply to an infant or a young child. He had the child to stand among them, which rules out an infant. HE held the child in the crook of HIS arm which was a safe and secure position. Children in that day were not high on the social list. Children had few rights, if any. JESUS was making the point to welcome or to care for or to be concerned about those the world does not consider worthy. When you do this in HIS name, you bring JESUS and GOD into your life and reveal CHRIST and GOD to those you are caring for. This child has no social status and cannot repay you for any kindness or care shown to them. By welcoming them it is out of a heart of concern, care and love for them as a fellow human being.

The world welcomes and cares for those who can help them but as a Christian, it is all about serving GOD as HE directs.

Let’s read Mark 10:32-34:

The Third Prediction of His Death

32 They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. They were astonished, but those who followed Him were afraid. Taking the Twelve aside again, He began to tell them the things that would happen to Him. 33 “Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem. The • Son of Man will be handed over to the • chief priests and the • scribes, and they will condemn Him to death. Then they will hand Him over to the Gentiles, 34 and they will mock Him, spit on Him, flog[12] Or scourge Him, and kill Him, and He will rise after three days.”

JESUS left Capernaum and was on HIS way to Jerusalem. HE was walking ahead of HIS disciples. The disciples are astonished that HE is walking out in front of them because they knew HE had told them that HE was going to be betrayed and killed. They were afraid of what might happen to them as the journeyed with HIM.

In our previous scripture, JESUS pulled the disciples aside for a heart to heart talk. This was the third time (Mark 8:31 and 9:31) HE was having to pull them aside again for a heart to heart regarding what was going to happen to HIM. The Sanhedrin, the ruling body for the Jews, would condemn HIM to death and the Roman government would mock HIM, flog HIM, spit on HIM and kill HIM but HE would conquer death by being raised from the dead after three (3) days.

This must have been confusing to them because they had never thought of their Messiah as being a suffering Messiah. Yet, JESUS made it clear but they did not question HIM.

Often we get perplexed when serving GOD because we can build up in our minds notions about GOD. GOD can do all things. HE created the world, the universe, all of life and HE keeps it all functioning in order. So why doesn’t GOD do this certain thing for me? HE can but in HIS wisdom, HE does not. We get angry with GOD because we do not understand or see things through HIS eyes. It is during these times we must trust HIM.

Is it easy? NO!!! NO!!! It is never easy. One day HE may allow us to see through HIS eyes the reason why. This is why believers must have the right relationship with HIM because it is through this relationship that we learn to trust HIM and have confidence in HIM. It is a growing, maturing, sanctification process, which may take a lifetime.

It is the results of truly getting to really know HIM and not just knowing about HIM. We can look at the spiritual lives of JESUS’ disciples before and after HIS crucifixion, resurrection, ascension and the filling of the HOLY SPIRIT. The difference was the result of really knowing JESUS. It is the same for believers today. Ask the LORD to take you as you are and to lead you to really know HIM and to help you build the most intimate relationship possible with HIM.

The Challenges of Knowing Jesus - Mark 6 and 7 - September 20, 2009

Bible Study Lesson - Knowing Jesus – The Challenges – September 20, 2009

This is lesson three (3) in our Bible study series entitled “Know Jesus.”

Our scripture is Mark 6:1-6a, 45-52; 7:8-9 and 13.

JESUS faced many challenges as HE ministered in a land steeped with many cultural notions about GOD and what GOD wanted for HIS followers. Those who became believers in JESUS were challenged by the current religious system. The purpose and plan of GOD for CHRIST came together after HIS death upon the cross, HIS resurrection from the dead, HIS forty (40) days upon earth after HIS resurrection, HIS ascension into heaven and the return of the HOLY SPIRIT to indwell all believers. Even though JESUS tried to tell HIS disciples what would be taking place, they did not fully understand until after the fact.

Believers, as well as fundamental Christian beliefs, today face challenges because they follow JESUS. Just recently, we read in the news that a young Muslim girl had to flee her home in the USA and relocate to Florida to prevent possible harm because she became a Christian. While preparing this study, a reporter was interviewing a couple who were care takers of a cross erected in 1934 on Federal land to honor those who lost their lives in World War I. The ACLU is representing a person who was offended by the cross. The cross had to be covered up until the case can be settled. Christianity in America is under attack. The journey can be very challenging. The Good News is that CHRIST walks with them each step of the way. Once people know the truth and accept the truth through the miracle of rebirth, they belong to the family of GOD and nothing can snatch them out of HIS hand or the hand of JESUS.

Let’s read Mark 6:1-6a:

Rejection at Nazareth

1 He went away from there and came to His hometown, and His disciples followed Him. 2 When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the • synagogue, and many who heard Him were astonished. “Where did this man get these things?” they said. “What is this wisdom given to Him, and how are these miracles performed by His hands? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren’t His sisters here with us?” So they were offended by Him. 4 Then Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his household.” 5 So He was not able to do any miracles[1] Lit miracle there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And He was amazed at their unbelief.

JESUS had been busy teaching and healing in the area east of the Sea of Galilee in the area of Decapolis which is the region of ten (10) cities. He returned from that area to Capernaum. From Capernaum HE went to HIS home town of Nazareth. Nazareth was a small village and it did not have a good reputation.

On the Sabbath JESUS and HIS disciples went to the local synagogue in Nazareth. JESUS began to teach and those who heard HIM were astonished. They knew JESUS as a carpenter. They likely watched HIM grow up along with HIS brothers and sisters. They knew HE had not studied under some rabbi. Rather than continue to listen to HIM and ask questions, they made a judgment. They were repulsed by HIM rather than exploring HIS wealth of knowledge about GOD.

JESUS made the comment that “A prophet is not without honor except in his own hometown, his relatives and in his household.” This is often true of those we have known most of their lives. It is hard to get beyond their snotty noses and often awkwardness in their developing years to their mature, adult fame.

As a result of their unbelief HE could not do the miracles HE had done in other places. HE did lay HIS hands on a few who were sick and they were healed. Why didn’t that get their attention? Prejudice blinds us.

JESUS had to deal with rejection by HIS own hometown folks. It must have broken the heart of JESUS to know that HE had the message and power to heal, eternally, those HE knew and loved from eternal death but they rejected HIM. The attitude of HIS hometown folks was their loss. Prejudice and preconceived notions can rob us of blessings.

I want us to focus for a few minutes on JESUS’ family. The fact that Joseph was not mentioned by Mark, likely means he was dead.

JESUS’ family thought HE had gone off the deep end and they were concerned about HIM in Mark 3:20-21 we read -
20 Then He went home, and the crowd gathered again so that they were not even able to eat.[7] Lit eat bread, or eat a meal 21 When His family heard this, they set out to restrain Him, because they said, “He’s out of His mind.”[8] Jn 7:5

We find in John 7: 1-5: - The Unbelief of Jesus’ Brothers

1 After this, Jesus traveled in Galilee, since He did not want to travel in Judea because the • Jews were trying to kill Him. 2 The Jewish Festival of Tabernacles[1] Or Booths [2] One of 3 great Jewish religious festivals, along with Passover and Pentecost; Ex 23:14; Dt 16:16 was near, 3 so His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea so Your disciples can see Your works that You are doing. 4 For no one does anything in secret while he’s seeking public recognition. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 (For not even His brothers believed in Him.)

Oh my, what have we uncovered - Another reason why we know that JESUS is the SON of GOD. However, we have to search farther to discover this.

After the death, resurrection and ascension of JESUS, guess who was waiting for the promised HOLY SPIRIT in the upper room. Let’s look at Acts 1:13-14: 13 When they arrived, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. 14 All these were continually united in prayer,[3] Other mss add and petition along with the women, including Mary[4] Or prayer, with their wives and Mary the mother of Jesus, and His brothers.

We know that James, the brother of JESUS, was the head of the Christian church in Jerusalem and that the Book of Jude was likely written by JESUS’ brother formerly named Judas. Likely his name was changed after Judas, a disciple, betrayed JESUS so as not to confuse the two.

The Apostle Paul, after his conversion experience to CHRIST on the road to Damascus, went to Jerusalem to meet with JESUS’ brother as recorded in Galatians 1:18-19:
18 Then after three years I did go up to Jerusalem to get to know • Cephas,[8] Other mss read Peter (The Apostle Peter) and I stayed with him 15 days. 19 But I didn’t see any of the other apostles except James, the Lord’s brother.

To me the Apostle Paul was verifying the facts of the life and ministry of JESUS and who better to authenticate the facts than a brother. Paul went on from there to give his life in service for our LORD.

So we have JESUS’ brothers who went from disbelief before the death, resurrection and ascension of CHRIST to believers. These scriptures were valuable to me in pondering questions regarding the authenticity of CHRIST.

Just as JESUS faced rejection and challenges, believers will also face the same or similar situations.

Let’s read Mark 6:45-52:

Walking on the Water

45 Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He dismissed the crowd. 46 After He said good-bye to them, He went away to the mountain to pray. 47 When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land. 48 He saw them being battered as they rowed,[12] Or them struggling as they rowed because the wind was against them. Around three in the morning[13] Lit Around the fourth watch of the night = 3 to 6 a.m. He came toward them walking on the sea and wanted to pass by them. 49 When they saw Him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out; 50 for they all saw Him and were terrified. Immediately He spoke with them and said, “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 51 Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. They were completely astounded,[14] Lit were astounded in themselves 52 because they had not understood about the loaves. Instead, their hearts were hardened.

JESUS and HIS disciples had been busy feeding the 5,000 people. We learn from John’s gospel that the people wanted to make JESUS their king. John 6:14-15:
14 When the people saw the sign[1] Other mss read signs He had done, they said, “This really is the Prophet[2] Dt 18:15 who was to come into the world!” 15 Therefore, when Jesus knew that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He withdrew again[3] A previous withdrawal is mentioned in Mk 6:31–32, an event that occurred just before the feeding of the 5,000. to the mountain by Himself. They likely thought that anyone who could feed over 5,000 people with so little would be a good choice for king. JESUS wanted them to make HIM the king of their hearts which would feed them for all eternity.

JESUS knew it was not HIS destiny to be an earthly king. But did HIS flesh nature consider being a king for a brief moment? We do not know but we do know that HE was tempted in every way that we as humans have been tempted. Whatever the situation, it led HIM to spend time in prayer.

HE sent HIS disciples to Bethsaida by boat, which was about four (4) miles. Mark seemed to capture the gravity of the moment when he used the word “immediately.” It seems that HE did not want HIS disciples to get caught up in the notion that HE had come to earth to be an earthly king. So HE sent them off in a boat while HE went to the mountain to pray.

After praying, it was 3 AM in the morning and the boat was in the middle of the sea. The disciples are encountering a strong wind and rowing hard but getting nowhere fast. They saw JESUS walking on the water and acting as if HE would walk past them. When I read this scripture years ago, I broke out in laughter. JESUS had a sense of humor.

I can envision the situation now. HIS disciples are trying to row the boat. JESUS was trucking along, walking on the water and waving HIS hand at HIS disciples and saying something like, “Hey, guys what is your problem. You have a boat and left a few hours ago. I caught up with you. In fact, I will get to shore quicker than you will, so I think I will walk.” They thought they were seeing a ghost. The disciples were terrified.

JESUS put their minds at ease by assuring them that HE was not a ghost. In verse 50, HE knew the disciples were terrified and HE quickly calmed their fears by saying “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” By using the phrase “It is I” in essence HE was saying it is “I AM.” “I AM” is the name GOD used to identify Himself to Moses when HE called Moses to deliver the Israelites from Egyptian bondage. HE used that phrase to enlighten HIS disciples to the fact that HE was GOD incarnate in the flesh. Just as GOD delivered the Israelites from the terror of Egyptian bondage, JESUS would deliver the disciples from the terror of the storm on the sea. Likely this was an effort to also get the disciples to focus on the fact that HE was on a different mission than being an earthly king.

As proof of HIS authority to call Himself “I AM” or GOD, when HE got into the boat the wind ceased. HIS disciples were astounded and perplexed. JESUS had fed 5,000 men plus women and children using five (5) loaves of bread and two (2) fish. The disciples had gathered twelve (12) basketsful of leftovers. The people wanted to make JESUS their king. JESUS sent the disciples away in a boat, HE walked to them on the sea and when HE got into the boat the wind ceased. WOW!!! This was overwhelming to them.

Mark highlights the fact that they did not understand about the miracle of the loaves. They were still pondering the feeding of over 5,000 people with so little and even having food left over. It is interesting, rather than HIS disciples relating these events as confirmation that JESUS was the promised Messiah, they hardened their hearts. They could not explain all they had witnessed. Often we question what we cannot explain. But do we explore further or do we throw up our hands and close our minds when this happens? This did not mean they stopped following JESUS. Were they intimidated to be in the presence of such a powerful person? Often when we are in the presence of someone so intelligent, powerful or that we hold in high esteem, we unable to communicate. Is this what Mark was attempting to say? Again, we can only speculate.

However, from another perspective, Matthew 13:33 sheds more light on this event - 33 Then those in the boat worshiped Him and said, “Truly You are the Son of God!” In this account, Matthew reported that they worshipped HIM and did not harden their hearts. Were the disciples hoping that JESUS would become an earthly king but HE had refused, which led them to harden their hearts? They did not understand HIS mission and may have been confused about HIS true mission since they had witnessed these miracles. This is all speculation. The disciples did not fully understand HIS mission until after HIS death, resurrection, ascension and the filling of the HOLY SPIRIT.

This is true of would be believers today. I wanted to have the assurance of salvation and the knowledge of the truth before I accepted CHRIST as my SAVIOR. Sorry, salvation does not work that way. All must take the step of faith first by asking CHRIST to forgive them of their sins, believe that HE died for their sins and ask HIM to come into their life. It is only after that step of faith that assurance of salvation and the HOLY SPIRIT indwells your life to give you that assurance. Don’t let the lack of understanding JESUS harden your heart. Take a step of faith by accepting CHRIST as your SAVIOR and experience the joy of HIS salvation.

Let’s read Mark 7:8-9, 13:

8 Disregarding the command of God, you keep the tradition of men.”[4] Other mss add The washing of jugs, and cups, and many other similar things you practice. 9 He also said to them, “You completely invalidate God’s command in order to maintain[5] Other mss read to establish your tradition!

13 You revoke God’s word by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other similar things.”

JESUS was speaking to scribes and Pharisees in Galilee. They had come to Galilee on an earlier visit and attributed the miracles of JESUS to Beelzebub. Beelzebub was the ruler of demons. They had returned and again observed JESUS and HIS disciples. The disciples had eaten some bread with unclean hands. Now this did not mean the disciples were nasty. Before the scribes and Pharisees would eat they would go through a ceremonial washing of their hands by washing all the way to their elbows. The disciples had washed their hands but not all the way to their elbows. Therefore, they had not performed the ceremonial cleansing of their hands and were accused of eating bread with unclean hands.

JESUS used their indignation regarding this issue to teach the scribes and Pharisees. In essence, HE was saying “Men don’t you see that you disregard what GOD wants you to do to follow the traditions of men. You are so intent on being seen as holy that you miss the mark of being made Holy by being obedient to GOD.”

JESUS used three (3) bold statements in HIS conversation with the scribes and Pharisees in an effort to provoke them to think about what they were doing to maintain tradition – Disregard (To abandon) GOD’S Law as HE gave it to Moses – Invalidate (Reject) GOD’S Law as HE gave it to Moses – Revoke (To make void or nullify) GOD’S Word period. Each word has a progressively stronger meaning.
JESUS was trying to get them to open their minds and look at what they were practicing had nothing to do with being obedient to GOD. They were following manmade rules and laws. In fact, the Pharisees had added 600 traditions. They followed the traditions of men. JESUS wanted them to see and follow the truth.
Even today, believers find it easier to follow traditions than to follow the leadership of the HOLY SPIRIT. We get caught up in the observance of the traditions because we can check off what we have done and consider that we have worshiped or served GOD. We feel comfortable because we have met the requirements of the church creed.

I know some people like the ritual and ceremony of certain church services. This is fine but do not let ritual and ceremony take the place of knowing that you have an intimate, loving relationship with GOD through CHRIST. What GOD wants is for believers to say, “LORD here I am use me for YOUR service.” Then let HIM lead you to what HE wants you to do. Do not depend upon a personal relationship with your church to get you to heaven but depend upon a personal relationship with CHRIST. CHRIST in you makes you a Christian.

JESUS faced challenges in HIS ministry. We have studied several – Rejection by HIS hometown and HIS family – Getting the big head because of people praising you and appealing to your ego – Knowing that you see truth and see others wallowing in tradition and following error. Believers will face challenges as they obediently serve GOD. Look to the LORD for guidance. HE wants others to see truth more than believers do. Wait upon HIM and let HIM guide you as you serve HIM.

The People Jesus Knew - Mark 2 - September 13, 2009

Bible Study Lesson – The People Jesus Knew – September 13, 2009

This is lesson two (2) in our series of study entitled “Know Jesus.”

Our scripture is Mark 2:1-12, 15-17, 23-28.

Last week we studied the JESUS people should know. This week we study some of the people JESUS knew or interacted with during HIS earthly ministry.

In JESUS’ day, society had some strong beliefs and prejudices. Some believed that a person having an infirmity had either sinned or their parent or parents had sinned and GOD was punishing them. Even in our modern times I have heard this mentioned. I have heard more of the opposite mentioned, such as this person is so vile I do not see why GOD doesn’t do something bad to him or her. In our first scripture, we will see how JESUS meets the needs of a paralyzed man and deals with religious prejudice.

In our next scripture, JESUS associates with the wrong crowd. Tax collectors were about as low as a person could go on the Jewish social scale. Tax collectors bid for the job of collecting tax and the job went to the highest bidder. They had the right to not only collect the tax due to Roman but they could collect more to keep for themselves. The Jewish people looked upon tax collectors as traitors, extortionist and sinners. In fact, tax collectors were barred from the synagogues. Yet, JESUS reached out to these and other social outcasts.

In our final scripture, JESUS clashed head-on with the religious leaders of HIS day regarding all the rules people had to follow to be acceptable to GOD. The people became bogged down in following the rules rather than focusing on seeking a relationship with GOD. This can happen to believers today. It is not about our doing activities to develop a relationship, it is about our abiding with CHRIST.

For years, I thought if my good outweighed my bad I would go to heaven. That is positively wrong!!! The Bible tells us that GOD considers the very best in us as filthy rags. Isaiah 46:6 - 6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. No one can earn his/her way to heaven. The only way to heaven is through the miracle of rebirth through JESUS. Ask CHRIST to forgive you of your sins and ask HIM to come into your life. That is it! Simple but eternal.

Rebirth in your spirit is the beginning of building a relationship with GOD through CHRIST. Get to know JESUS by reading the Bible and talking to HIM in prayer. Tell HIM that your desire is to have a loving relationship with HIM and ask HIM to show you and help you to build that relationship.

Let HIM “call” you to the work HE wants you to do for HIM. The word “call” is a term used in religious circles to mean that GOD has led you or invited you to a specific task. You did not choose what you are doing but GOD called you to do it. It is HIS invitation for you to join HIM in HIS work. But do not get bogged down in trying to figure out what you are supposed to be doing. Study GOD’S Word and if you are not already involved in a gospel preaching and practicing church, then ask HIM to lead you to a church that preaches HIS Word. Work on getting to know HIM and as you learn of HIM, let that relationship lead you. In other words, wait upon the LORD and let HIM reveal the path you need to go down with HIM. Will it be easy? No but HE will be with you each step of the way.

Let’s read Mark 2:1-12:

1 When He entered Capernaum again after some days, it was reported that He was at home. 2 So many people gathered together that there was no more room, not even in the doorway, and He was speaking the message to them. 3 Then they came to Him bringing a paralytic, carried by four men. 4 Since they were not able to bring him to[1] Other mss read able to get near Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above where He was. And when they had broken through, they lowered the stretcher on which the paralytic was lying. 5 Seeing their faith, Jesus told the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6 But some of the • scribes were sitting there, thinking to themselves:[2] Or there, reasoning in their hearts 7 “Why does He speak like this? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 Right away Jesus understood in His spirit that they were reasoning like this within themselves and said to them, “Why are you reasoning these things in your hearts?[3] Or minds 9 Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your stretcher, and walk’? 10 But so you may know that the • Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” He told the paralytic, 11 “I tell you: get up, pick up your stretcher, and go home.” 12 Immediately he got up, picked up the stretcher, and went out in front of everyone. As a result, they were all astounded and gave glory to God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

In last week’s study, we saw that JESUS had gone to the synagogue in Capernaum and it was a very lively event. This week JESUS returned to the city of Capernaum. The scripture states that HE came home. We know that JESUS was headquartered in Capernaum. The house he had come back to was not HIS home but likely the home of Simon Peter and his brother Andrew. It seemed that HE came back to town quietly but someone reported that HE was back in town. HIS fame had spread and folks were excited about HIM coming back to town.

There was a crowd of people listening to JESUS preach. The crowd was so large that the four (4) men carrying a paralyzed man on a stretcher, bed or pallet had to go to the roof top. I understand that in that day the houses had flat roofs with outside stairs to access the roof. The group of five (5) skirted around the crowd and went up on the roof. Then the men began to break open the roof to gain access to JESUS. The roof was made of wood beams, mud, thatch and tiles.

I can see JESUS now, preaching away and all of a sudden debris from the roof begins to fall around HIM. JESUS being JESUS knew what was going on. GOD, the FATHER had a plan.

They broke open the roof and lowered the paralyzed man down. JESUS saw the faith of those who had brought the paralyzed man. Some scholars believe that also included the faith of the paralyzed man. The paralytic most likely was in agreement with them taking him to JESUS. He could have resisted but there is no indication of that. The important thing is that JESUS recognized that the paralytic’s main need was to know that his sins had been forgiven.

In that day many people equated health problems with sin. The paralytic may have sinned or thought he had sinned, such that GOD could not forgive him. To me it seems that the statement “Son, your sins are forgiven” was the answer to the paralyzed man’s prayer to GOD. Was he praying as his friends took him to JESUS asking GOD to forgive him of certain sins? We do not know but JESUS set the record straight “son your sins are forgiven.”

This gave JESUS the opportunity to engage the religious leaders who were listening to HIM. Scribes prided themselves in knowing the law. They were experts in the Old Testament, as well as the various teachings of other teachers and rabbis. The scribes were guardians of the truth and were keenly focused on blasphemy where JESUS was concerned. The scribes believed that only GOD could forgive sins or heal. See the setup. GOD was leading them to the ultimate truth. JESUS was the promised Messiah. GOD was trying to get them to open their spiritual eyes to what was about to happen. These were the very religious leaders who should have known the Old Testament prophesy and made the connection – miracles-healing-sins being forgiven equals Messiah.

Had these religious leaders read and studied the scriptures and made up their minds about the coming Messiah? Had they decided how HE would come into the world, what HE would do, how HE would look, how HE would act, how HE would speak, the people with whom HE would associate, etc? In other words, they had the Messiah all figured out and JESUS just did not measure up to their vision of the Messiah. JESUS did not follow their pattern. Their preconceived notions robbed them of encountering the truth. They were spiritually arrogant and prejudiced.

I can tell you, we do the exact same thing today. Many of us have heard the gospel preached in churches, over the radio, on television and by others. We have formed an opinion about GOD and JESUS. We may have encountered a difficulty in our lives and we asked GOD or JESUS or both for help but help did not come. They did not measure up to our expectations. They disappointed us. So, we concluded one or both did not either care or did not exist. I know I have been there. It was a long journey back. But it was a solid journey.

If this has happened to you, confess it before the LORD and ask HIM to help you see the truth. If you have never asked CHRIST to forgive you of your sins and to come into your life, do so right now. Confess that you are a sinner, acknowledge that CHRIST died upon the cross for your sins, acknowledge that GOD raised HIM from the dead as proof that HE is the true Messiah, ask HIM to forgive you of your sins and ask HIM to come into your life. In a nanosecond, “son or daughter your sins are forgiven.” Not only are your past sins forgiven but your present and future sins as well. Just as JESUS told the paralyzed man, “get up and walk.” As a believer, the HOLY SPIRIT will indwell you and HE will lead you to know the truth as you read and study the Bible. Begin with the Book of John.

GOD leads all of us to face the truth. Who is JESUS? Will you accept HIM or reject HIM? No matter what you may have done GOD will forgive you.

JESUS knew what the scribes were thinking. HE knew the moment was ripe for them to see truth. HE knew they had been pondering a question in their minds, so HE asked them a question in verse 9.

Verses 9-11:

9 Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your stretcher, and walk’? 10 But so you may know that the • Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” He told the paralytic, 11 “I tell you: get up, pick up your stretcher, and go home.”

The moment is set. JESUS knew that they believed only GOD could forgive sins or heal. The scribes may have had a momentary thought of glee when JESUS posed the questions but when JESUS said to the paralytic “get up, pick up your stretcher and go home” he did. Everyone was astounded and gave GOD the glory. What a testimony and a witness to JESUS. HE truly was the Son of GOD.

You would think this would have opened the hearts of the scribes but spiritual arrogance can blind religious people to the truth.

Let’s read Mark 2:15-17:

Dining with Sinners
15 While He was reclining at the table in Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were also guests[4] Lit reclining (at the table); at important meals the custom was to recline on a mat at a low table and lean on the left elbow. with Jesus and His disciples, because there were many who were following Him. 16 When the scribes of the • Pharisees[5] Other mss read scribes and Pharisees saw that He was eating with sinners and tax collectors, they asked His disciples, “Why does He eat[6] Other mss add and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 When Jesus heard this, He told them, “Those who are well don’t need a doctor, but the sick [do need one]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. . I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Levi or Matthew, the tax collector, invited JESUS to his house for a great feast. Levi had invited his fellow tax collectors and sinners. These sinners covered a broad category which included sexually immoral, prostitutes, thieves, murderers, liars or anyone not following the oral traditions and anyone who associated with those the scribes and Pharisees considered unclean. However, among his friends and guests were some followers of JESUS.

It was customary for those giving such a feast to allow onlookers to attend, thus the presence of the scribes and Pharisees. The scribes were the experts on the laws used by the Pharisees. The Pharisees was the largest religious party in that day. Some Pharisees were also scribes but not all were scribes.

The scribes of the Pharisees asked JESUS’ disciples why HE associated with these folks. JESUS heard them and responded to their question. HE used an analogy comparing the physically sick to the spiritually sick. People who are physically sick know they are in need of a doctor. Thus, those who are spiritually sick know they are in need of a SAVIOR. Those who believe they are righteous are blind and cannot see how spiritually sick they are. They are blinded by their spiritual arrogance or their own self-righteousness.

Often, we as believers have heard a very moral person say they live a better life than most of the Christians that go to church. This is true when looking on the outside. All believers are sinners saved by grace. The more believers know the LORD, the more they realize how far short they fall but quickly realize that is why they need salvation. All believers realize that their right to enter heaven is based upon JESUS, HIS Righteousness, HIS shed blood and their faith in HIM.

Let’s read Mark 2:23-28:

Lord of the Sabbath
23 On the Sabbath He was going through the grainfields, and His disciples began to make their way picking some heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25 He said to them, “Have you never read what David and those who were with him did when he was in need and hungry— 26 how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar[11] 1 Sm 21:1–6 the high priest and ate the • sacred bread—which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests—and also gave some to his companions?” 27 Then He told them, “The Sabbath was made for[12] Or because of man and not man for[13] Or because of the Sabbath. 28 Therefore the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

This situation brings us back to some of the absurd laws the religious leaders wanted their fellow Jews to follow. JESUS and HIS disciples were going through the grain fields on the Sabbath. The Pharisees wesre tagging along in an effort to catch JESUS/His Disciples breaking the law. They saw HIS disciples take some grain, likely wheat. They removed the husks off by rubbing it in their hands and ate the grain. Taking the grain from a field was permissible under Old Testament law – Deuteronomy 23:25:
25 When you enter your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck heads of grain with your hand, but you must not put a sickle to your neighbor’s grain.

The Pharisees considered that JESUS and HIS disciples had violated the Sabbath. They harvested grain, winnowed it, threshed it and prepared a meal. All of these were not lawful on the Sabbath. In fact, there were 39 specific acts that were banned on the Sabbath. Plus, there were over 900 other rules/laws the religious leaders had for people to follow the other days of the week. This was how absurd the religious laws had gotten. The religious leaders were more focused on the rules and regulations than on worshipping GOD. JESUS was trying to get them to see what was driving their attempt to please GOD. They were all mechanical things. We do the same today. We must keep in mind from GOD’S perspective that the very best in any human is as filthy rags. That is why we all need CHRIST. No human can get to heaven through his/her own efforts.

I know of a man in a former church who refused to change a flat tire on his mother’s car on Sunday. He was a great man but very legalistic.

JESUS pointed out to the Pharisees that when David was fleeing from King Saul, he and his men were hungry. The only food available was the bread intended for the priests for the Sabbath. It was a violation of the Levitical Law for David and his men to eat this bread. But the priest gave the bread to David and his men to eat. The Pharisees did not condemn David for eating the bread.

JESUS made it clear that the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. The Sabbath did not dictate what JESUS was to do but rather GOD directed JESUS’ activities. Believers can become comfortable doing activities but are they the activities GOD desires for them to do.

JESUS mingled with all sorts of people. Here I must interject a word of caution. Some believers must be careful about revisiting some of their old friends or haunts. I understand that those with certain addictions can be lured back to those previous addictions by associating with certain sights, sounds and/or people that can act as a trigger.

Yes, JESUS can be believers’ strength and help them overcome an addiction but the flesh can raise its’ head.

It is easy for most believers to see the self-righteous attitude of the scribes and Pharisees but it is hard for believers to see their own spiritual prejudices and arrogance.

The Jesus People Should Know - Mark 1 - September 6, 2009

Sunday School Lesson – The Jesus People Should Know- September 6, 2009

This begins a new series of study entitled “Know Jesus.”

Our scripture for the next two (2) months will be in the Book of Mark.

The Book of Mark, although second in the Bible, it was likely the first Gospel written. It was likely written between 64 and 65 A. D. Bible scholars believe that the Apostle Peter urged Mark to write his account of events regarding the life and ministry of JESUS. Although the human author never gives his name, early accounts attribute the writings to John Mark. John Mark was not one of the twelve (12) disciples. But his mother was a Christian who lived in Jerusalem and her home was used as a meeting place for fellow believers’. Speculation is that the Apostle Peter presented the Gospel to John Mark and he accepted CHRIST as his SAVIOR. Mark was the cousin of Barnabas. He accompanied Paul and Barnabas on the first part of Paul’s first missionary journey.

Some Bible scholars believe that Mark was referring to himself, when JESUS was arrested, in Mark 14:51-52: (Was John Mark the first streaker?)

51 Now a certain young man,[12] Perhaps John Mark who later wrote this Gospel having a linen cloth wrapped around his naked body, was following Him. They caught hold of him, 52 but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked.

Mark’s account of the life and ministry of JESUS is fast paced, which we will see as we study it. It is the shortest of the Gospels. However, Mark reported more miracles than any of the other Gospels. Mark’s purpose was to present JESUS, HIS life, HIS works and teachings to the Christians in Rome. His readers would have been mostly Gentile Christians, likely either facing or potentially facing death and persecution for their faith in JESUS.

Let’s read Mark 1:1-3:

1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet:[1] Other mss read in the prophets Look, I am sending My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way.[2] Other mss add before You 3 A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: “Prepare the way for the Lord; make His paths straight!”[3] Mal 3:1; Isaiah 40:3

Mark begins by acknowledging JESUS as the Son of GOD. He used the word “beginning” and then he quoted from Old Testament prophesy. The prophesy quoted came from GOD through the Prophet Isaiah regarding the messenger of GOD who would be the herald or forerunner urging people to prepare their hearts for the coming of the promised Messiah. Mark’s use of the word “beginning” tied all the events back to GOD. John the Baptist was GOD’S messenger, who heralded or announced the coming of the promised Messiah, JESUS.

A herald would run ahead of a king or an important person to announce his coming. A herald would ensure the road ahead was safe to travel and repair any pot holes that could hinder travel. A herald or forerunner would give those ahead an alert that this person was coming and give them time to prepare for his arrival. Likewise GOD sent John the Baptist to herald the coming of CHRIST. The Greek word for Messiah is CHRIST and the New Testament is written in Greek. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew thus Messiah.

We know that John the Baptist preached in the wilderness. He preached repentance and to prepare for the day when a person would be fully redeemed by the Messiah.
Matthew began his gospel account with the genealogy of JESUS. Dr. Luke began his account surrounding the birth of JESUS. The Apostle John began his account going back to the beginning “the Word” and he told how the Word became flesh. Each account gives us additional information and collectively, they give us a wonderful picture of the life and ministry of our SAVIOR and LORD JESUS.

Mark used “gospel” which in Greek meant “good news” or “good message.” The word was originally used to announce the victory after a battle or to announce the birth of a new king or the rise of a new king. Remember the birth of JESUS was announced by the angel, “Behold I bring you Good News of great joy.” In the first few words of Mark’s account he sets the stage for what he was writing. What he was writing had its’ origin with GOD and was fulfilled by HIS SON JESUS. The Good News is when a person accepts JESUS CHRIST as his/her SAVIOR, he/she is cleansed of all sin, is freed from the bondage of eternal death and will live with GOD and CHRIST for eternity. When we add information from the Book of John we know that JESUS said that a person must be born-again in the spirit. John, Chapter 3:5-8:

5 Jesus answered, “I assure you: Unless someone is born of water and the Spirit,[2] Or spirit, or wind; the Gk word pneuma can mean wind, spirit, or Spirit, each of which occurs in this context. he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 Whatever is born of the flesh is flesh, and whatever is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be amazed that I told you that you[3] The pronoun is pl in Gk. must be born again. 8 The wind[4] The Gk word pneuma can mean wind, spirit, or Spirit, each of which occurs in this context. blows where it pleases, and you hear its sound, but you don’t know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

Mark referred to JESUS as “the” Son of GOD. This was a title which ties JESUS to the “beginning.” It reveals that JESUS was not created by GOD for this special occasion but that HE is the eternal Son of GOD and has always been with GOD. Christians are referred to as “sons of GOD” and I add “daughters of GOD.” There is only one SON of GOD.

We fast forward to John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness.

Let’s read Mark 1:7, 9-13:

7 He was preaching: “Someone more powerful than I will come after me. I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of His sandals. 8 I have baptized you with[6] Or in water, but He will baptize you with[7] Or in the Holy Spirit.”

The Baptism of Jesus
9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. 10 As soon as He came up out of the water, He saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending to Him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: You are My beloved Son;[8] Ps 2:7 I take delight in You![9] Or In You I am well pleased [10] Isaiah 42:1

The Temptation of Jesus
12 Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. 13 He was in the wilderness 40 days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels began to serve Him.

John the Baptist or Baptizer was preaching repentance from your sins and prepare for the coming of the Messiah. John the Baptist was JESUS’ cousin. He recognized JESUS as the promised Messiah and he did not consider himself worthy to untie HIS sandals and wash HIS feet. In that day the wealthy would have a servant whose duty was to untie a guest’s sandals and wash his/her feet. That servant had about the lowest duty on the duty roster. John the Baptist was saying he was not worthy to approach JESUS even to untie HIS sandals from a spiritual sense because HE was GOD’S SON incarnated in a human body.

John the Baptist knew that JESUS would be baptizing believers with the HOLY SPIRIT. John the Baptist baptized with water which was a place holder until the believer could receive the HOLY SPIRIT. We need to keep in mind that baptism is a symbol that a believer has died to sin (confession), died to his/her old life (repented) and has been resurrected from his/her old life to walk in newest of life in CHRIST (Born-again believer is empowered and assured by the HOLY SPIRIT).

The message that John the Baptist was preaching was missing “the passion of CHRIST” because CHRIST had not given HIS life to pay the debt for sin required by GOD. Therefore, John’s baptism left those who repented of their sins to use their will power to remain faithful to their commitment to live a Godly life. Whereas, after the death, resurrection, ascension of JESUS and the return of the HOLY SPIRIT, all believers are indwelled by the HOLY SPIRIT, WHO confirms their faith and empowers them to live according to the will of GOD. CHRIST is the living water that bubbles up from within and overflows as believers obediently live for HIM and serve HIM.

The baptism of JESUS:

John the Baptist was reluctant to baptize JESUS because he knew who JESUS was. JESUS was not baptized because HE had to repent of HIS sins. JESUS was baptized as an act of obedience to inaugurate the beginning of HIS ministry. The HOLY SPIRIT falling upon HIM empowered HIM for HIS ministry. The Trinity was present at the baptism of JESUS – GOD the FATHER spoke from heaven, JESUS was being baptized and the HOLY SPIRIT descended upon JESUS.

The temptation of JESUS: (Matthew 4:1-11 and Luke 4:1-13 recorded more details regarding the temptation of JESUS.)

Following the baptism of JESUS, the HOLY SPIRIT drove or led HIM to the wilderness to be tempted or tested. The word “drove” indicates to me that JESUS did not have a choice. The wilderness experience was a necessity. This is often so true following our salvation. Satan means “adversary.” Satan is the enemy of GOD, as well as the children of GOD. First, Satan does not want any person to accept CHRIST as his or her SAVIOR. Second, if Satan fails to prevent a person from accepting CHRIST as his/her SAVIOR, then he will do everything he can to neutralize or discourage a new believer by tempting him/her.

Believers will find strength when they are tempted provided they seek to overcome the temptation through the power of GOD. If they resist the temptation, then, they are strengthened each time they resist but be careful not to become complacent or over confident.

I used to think I could walk through hell itself and come out without smelling like smoke. But I learned that spiritual arrogance made me vulnerable. GOD has ways to deal with spiritual arrogance.

GOD’S Word tells us that we will not be tempted beyond that which we are able to resist. But I think stubbornness can lead us to go beyond the circle of protection and a believer can end up in trouble. GOD will never leave us even though we are in spiritual trouble. GOD allows it because HE knows the end result, if we look to HIM for deliverance. We may have to go through the fire before we get our head screwed on straight again.

No matter how close we think we are to GOD, we must never take our eyes off of JESUS, HIS care and HIS power. Believers always need HIM, even the Pope or any famous religious leader needs HIM. The closer believers get to GOD, the more they realize how much they miss the mark and how much they need and depend upon GOD’S grace.

Satan tried to give JESUS a short cut to redeem mankind. JESUS fought the onslaught of Satan with the Word of GOD. That is why believers must hide GOD’S Word in their hearts. Encountering Satan can either strengthen the believers’ relationship with CHRIST or defeat them. Believers have a choice. Believers must learn that their power and protection over Satan is covered by the shed blood of JESUS. JESUS has already defeated Satan. Focus on JESUS the victor.

Believers need to be aware of the influence Satan can have over their lives through their old life. When temptation comes, do not place yourself in a position that enhances the possibility to yield to the temptation but flee and quickly turn your thoughts to JESUS. Confess it to the LORD.

Quote scripture that reinforces the victory that all believers have in CHRIST and focus on the fact that HE has defeated Satan and won the victory over sin and death. Fill your hearts and minds with scripture assuring you of the victory you have through CHRIST and HIS shed blood. You belong to GOD and are kept by HIM for all eternity.

I often have to recall 1 John 4:4 - 4 You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the One (JESUS) who is in you is greater than the one (Satan) who is in the world.

JESUS is in all believers and Satan is in the world. JESUS has already defeated Satan and so have believers but they must keep their eyes upon JESUS.

Let’s read Mark 1:21-28:

21 Then they went into Capernaum, and right away He entered the • synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach. 22 They were astonished at His teaching because, unlike the • scribes, He was teaching them as one having authority. 23 Just then a man with an unclean spirit was in their synagogue. He cried out,[15] Other mss add to the beginning of v. 24: “Leave us alone. 24 “What do You have to do with us,[16] Lit What to us and to You Jesus—Nazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 25 But Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet,[17] Or Be muzzled and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit convulsed him, shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him. 27 Then they were all amazed, so they began to argue with one another, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority![18] Other mss read What is this? What is this new teaching? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” 28 His fame then spread throughout the entire vicinity of Galilee.

In that day, synagogues could be established if there were ten (10) Jewish men interested in establishing one. They worshipped on Saturday and it was common for them to invite a rabbi or scribe to read and interpret the scripture. JESUS would go to the synagogue and teach. This was such an occasion. Capernaum was the headquarters for JESUS’ ministry.

JESUS entered the synagogue and began to teach. HIS hearers were amazed. They were use to a person quoting some other rabbi or learned person regarding the interpretation of the scriptures. JESUS was a breath of fresh air. HE did not have to quote someone else. HE spoke directly because HE knew the truth. HIS hearers knew the difference.

When the HOLY SPIRIT is working, as HE was when JESUS was teaching, Satan had to step in and try to create a distraction. Those present in the synagogue were astonished, so a man possessed by demons came on the scene. He acknowledged that JESUS was the “Holy One from God.” JESUS did not need publicity from Satan or the distraction. JESUS rebuked the unclean spirits and they came out of the man. This demonstrated that JESUS had authority over the spirit world. (If you ever think you are encountering an evil spirit always claim the blood of JESUS verbally.)

This got the attention of those in the synagogue and they were amazed.

Being amazed is one thing but yielding your life to the ONE WHO has the power over sin, death and the spirit world is vital. The fame of JESUS spread.

Do you know JESUS through the miracle of rebirth or do you just know about HIM because of HIS fame? There is an eternal difference between the two. HIS desire is for you to know HIM and learn of HIM as you accept HIM as your SAVIOR, yield your life to HIM, build a relationship with HIM and obediently serve HIM as HE leads you. If you have not made that commitment, please do so right now.
