Jesus the Savior: Accept or Reject? - Acts 2 - April 26, 2009

Sunday School Lesson – Jesus the Savior: Accept or Reject? – April 26, 2009

This is lesson four (4) in our series of study entitled “Gospel Crossroads.”

Our scripture is Acts 2:12-21, 22-24, 32-36, 37-41.

As we discussed in last week’s lesson, the Apostle Peter was about to preach his first sermon. Peter had denied CHRIST three (3) times prior to the crucifixion of CHRIST. Now, following the arrival and outpouring of the HOLY SPIRIT, GOD was using Peter to deliver HIS message to those in Jerusalem.

It is not where we have been but where we are going that is important to GOD. GOD looks upon the heart and the potential of a believer who yields his/her life to HIM. HE calls believers to serve HIM regardless of previous warts and short comings.
Every human has a choice to make – Accept or Reject JESUS. Even after believers accept HIM as their SAVIOR, they have to decide whether or not they will serve HIM. Who will rule their lives – their flesh or the HOLY SPIRIT?

GOD works within the heart of every person urging him/her to accept CHRIST but the final decision is left up to each individual. GOD never overrides a person’s right to choose but GOD makes the choice clear to each individual. GOD uses believers to be witnesses for HIM but GOD works in the hearts of unbelievers and invites them to become HIS children. When an unbeliever rejects CHRIST, he/she is rejecting GOD’S invitation.

Let’s read Acts 2:12-21: (This scripture will give us the lead-in to Peter’s sermon.)

12 And they (Those gathered near the house where the HOLY SPIRIT came upon 120 believers.) were all astounded and perplexed, saying to one another, “What could this be?” 13 But some sneered and said, “They’re full of new wine!” (They thought the believers were drunk.)

Peter’s Sermon

14 But Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: “Jewish men and all you residents of Jerusalem, let this be known to you and pay attention to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it’s only nine in the morning.[2] Lit it’s the third hour of the day 16 On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 And it will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out My Spirit on all humanity; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. 18 I will even pour out My Spirit on My male and female slaves in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 I will display wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below: blood and fire and a cloud of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and remarkable day of the Lord comes; 21 then whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.[3] Jl 2:28–32

This is Peter’s sermon to the devout men, women, children, servants and foreigners (Gentiles) who were in Jerusalem celebrating Pentecost. Peter tells them that the believers they were seeing and hearing were not drunk. It is 9:00 AM in the morning; however, Peter gets their attention by saying in essence, this is what the Prophet Joel had spoken about. He tied the event to prophesy they had likely heard discussed in the synagogues. Peter quotes Joel 2:28-32. This is not to imply that all the prophesy Joel had stated was being manifested in Acts chapter1but it was the beginning of the fulfillment of this prophesy. The prophesy Joel stated is still in the process of being fulfilled and will continue until the second coming of CHRIST.

Let’s read Acts 2:22-24:

22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: This Jesus the • Nazarene was a man pointed out to you by God with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through Him, just as you yourselves know. 23 Though He was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used[4] Other mss read you have taken lawless people[5] Or used the hand of lawless ones to nail Him to a cross and kill Him. 24 God raised Him up, ending the pains of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it.

Peter began his sermon addressing the devout men, women, Gentiles, etc. who were in Jerusalem seeking a time of renewal and recommitment to GOD. Little did they know how special this day was in the plan and purpose of GOD. Those gathered to hear Peter’s sermon had likely been in Jerusalem when JESUS was crucified or they had at least heard the details of HIS crucifixion.

Peter began by calling attention to JESUS. He told those gathered that he was talking about JESUS from Nazareth. JESUS was GOD’S man born in Nazareth, WHO was confirmed as HIS chosen ONE through the miracles, wonders and signs GOD manifested through HIM. The HOLY SPIRIT was leading Peter to tie the miracles, wonders and signs prior to the crucifixion of JESUS and the events surrounding the crucifixion of JESUS to those listening. He emphasized, “just as you know” in verse 22.

Peter further emphasized that even though all the events were according to GOD’S plan, all participants in the crucifixion of CHRIST had a choice. Those who participated either overtly or by silence were complicit in the crucifixion of JESUS. The Jewish religious system did not nail JESUS to the cross but they used the Romans and their legal system to do it, therefore, they were just as guilty as those who actually carried out the crucifixion.

GOD had a major zinger in store for all who thought they could kill GOD’S SON - HE raised HIM from the dead! JESUS’ resurrection was major proof which confirmed that JESUS is WHO HE said HE was. JESUS broke the bondage of sin and death. This message pierced the hearts of all who heard it.

Let’s read Acts 2:32-36:

32 “God has resurrected this Jesus. We are all witnesses of this. 33 Therefore, since He has been exalted to the right hand of God and has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, He has poured out what you both see and hear. 34 For it was not David who ascended into the heavens, but he himself says: The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand 35 until I make Your enemies Your footstool.’[11] Ps 110:1 36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah!”

Peter continued the message, telling those gathered that GOD resurrected JESUS from the dead and they were witnesses to HIS resurrection. Not only has GOD resurrected CHRIST, HE gave HIM the seat of honor and power at HIS right hand. JESUS being asked to sit at the right hand of GOD was also a sign of completion. As long as JESUS was on earth, the HOLY SPIRIT could not come to earth and indwell a believer. But once JESUS was in heaven, in the seat of authority and completion, GOD, the FATHER, placed the HOLY SPIRIT under the authority of JESUS. JESUS had paid the penalty for sin and now the human body of each believer could be indwelled by the HOLY SPIRIT.

Peter told those listening that they had both seen and heard evidence that the HOLY SPIRIT had come upon each believer. They had heard the violent wind and heard their mother language being spoken from the most unlikely people.

Peter then refered to Psalm 110:1 - 1 The Lord declared to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies Your footstool.”[1] Mt 22:44; Mk 12:36; Lk 20:42–43; Ac 2:34–35; 1 Co 15:25; Heb 1:13 - written by King David. King David had not ascended into heaven but he was referring to CHRIST as LORD and Messiah when he said The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand 35 until I make Your enemies Your footstool.’[11]

Then the crowning blow came when Peter made this connection for his hearers. GOD raised JESUS from the dead as proof HE was the promised Messiah. JESUS ascended into heaven and GOD exalted HIM by seating HIM at HIS right hand. When this happened it was a clear message to Israel that JESUS was both LORD and Messiah.
This connection resonated with those listening and their hearts were immediately convicted of their sin and their culpability in the crucifixion of CHRIST.

Let’s read Acts 2:37-41:

Forgiveness through the Messiah

37 When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles: “Brothers, what must we do?” 38 “Repent,” Peter said to them, “and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus the Messiah for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off,[12] Remote in time or space as many as the Lord our God will call.” 40 And with many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt[13] Or crooked, or twisted generation!”

A Generous and Growing Church

41 So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about 3,000 people were added to them. 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayers.

The message GOD gave Peter to preach, through the power of the HOLY SPIRIT, penetrated to the very core of those listening. They were convicted of their sin and their immediate response was “What must we do?” In other words, we see our sin and we know we are guilty, what can we do to deal with this awful situation we are in? We need to remember that those listening were devout people, seeking to renew their relationship with GOD. Now that they saw that they had rejected GOD’S SON and were guilty of crucifying HIM, what can they do? Are they doomed forever?

Peter said, REPENT! To repent means to turn around and go in the opposite direction. You thought you were headed in the right direction by rejecting CHRIST as the promised Messiah but now you know that you were headed in the wrong direction. Now that you see that HE was the promised Messiah, then acknowledge it. Peter told them to follow their faith in CHRIST as the Messiah by being baptized.

We know that baptism does not save a believer, because he/she is saved at the moment of belief. However, as an act of obedience of their faith as believers in CHRIST, they needed to be baptized. Baptism is an outward expression of the internal change that has taken place in their life.

Peter instructed them with many more words. That day three thousand (3,000) new believers were baptized. Not only were they baptized, they were eager to learn all they could about JESUS from the Apostles. They wanted to fellowship with other believers, eat with them and pray with them. It is natural for those born-again to want to be part of their spiritual family. It is natural to want to grow spiritually once believers have seen the truth.

To me John 3:16 brings all that we have studied this month together. The cross shows the efforts of man and evil to defeat the love of GOD for mankind. The cross also shows the victory and power of GOD’S plan and purpose over human and evil efforts.

Let’s read John 3:9-18: JESUS is speaking to Nicodemus. Let’s keep in mind that Nicodemus helped Joseph of Arimathea bury JESUS after HIS crucifixion. As we read this scripture think of the collision that happened at the cross between the Roman governing system, the Jewish religious system and the love of GOD.

9 “How can these things be?” asked Nicodemus. 10 “Are you a teacher[5] Or the teacher of Israel and don’t know these things?” Jesus replied. 11 “I assure you: We speak what We know and We testify to what We have seen, but you[6] The word you in Gk is pl here and throughout v. 12. do not accept Our testimony.[7] The pl forms (We, Our) refer to Jesus and His authority to speak for the Father. 12 If I have told you about things that happen on earth and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you about things of heaven? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except the One who descended from heaven—the • Son of Man.[8] Other mss add who is in heaven 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in Him will[9] Other mss add not perish, but have eternal life. 16 “For God loved the world in this way: He gave His • One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.[10] 1 Jn 4:9–10 17 For God did not send His Son into the world that He might condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 Anyone who believes in Him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the • One and Only Son of God.

Notice in 1 Peter 1:18-21 GOD’S plan from before the foundations of the world CHRIST was destined to redeem mankind from sin and death by giving HIS life through the shedding of HIS blood.

1 Peter 1:18-21:

18 For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from the fathers, not with perishable things, like silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. 20 He was destined[24] Or was chosen, or was known before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the times for you 21 who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead[25] Rm 4:24; 10:9 and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

The cross brought all the earthly and heavenly powers together and CHRIST came forth in victory because HE defeated sin, death and evil.

UP FROM THE GRAVE HE AROSE!!! VICTORIOUS AND TRIUMPHANT OVER SIN, DEATH AND EVIL!!! ALL WHO BELIEVE RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE THROUGH THE MIRACLE OF REBIRTH, CONFIRMED BY THE INDWELLING HOLY SPIRIT.

What a heritage all believers have. This is the day the LORD has made, rejoice and be glad in it. Do you know JESUS as your SAVIOR? If not pray right now and ask HIM to forgive you of your sins and to come into your life.

If you prayed to receive CHRIST as your SAVIOR, then thank HIM for saving you and coming into your life. Begin reading and studying the Bible. I suggest that you begin with the Book of John. Ask GOD to reveal truth to you as you study. If you are not already involved in a Bible teaching church then pray and ask GOD to lead you to the church HE wants you to be involved in. GOD is now your FATHER and you have direct access to HIM through CHRIST.

Jesus' Followers: True Witnesses or Wishful Thinkers (Holy Spirit) - Acts 1:4-8, 2:1-4, 12-16 - April 19, 2009

Sunday School Lesson – Jesus’ Followers: True Witnesses or Wishful Thinkers? - April 19, 2009

This is lesson three (3) in our series entitles “Gospel Crossroads.”

Our scripture is Acts 1:4-8, 2:1-4, 12-16.

The passion of CHRIST not only paid the penalty for the sins of mankind but also made possible for the HOLY SPIRIT to indwell the human body of believers. At the death of CHRIST, the curtain which separated the Holy of Holies and the sanctuary was split from top to bottom. The Holy of Holies was where only the high priest could enter once per year on the Day of Atonement. The Priest would have to offer a sacrifice first for his own sins and then for the sins of the people. The sanctuary was where the people could go. The splitting of the curtain had a much deeper meaning in GOD’S redemptive plan for mankind through the death and resurrection of CHRIST. It signified that the way to GOD was no longer through a priest but every believer has direct access to GOD through CHRIST. We refer to this as the priesthood of the believer. All believers, since that moment, have direct access to GOD, our FATHER through the atoning death of CHRIST our SAVIOR.

CHRIST’S shed blood removed the sin barrier for all believers. The instant believers accept CHRIST as their SAVIOR, they become children of GOD. In an instant through the miracle of rebirth, they are born into the family of GOD and receive the gift of eternal life to become citizens of heaven and filled with the HOLY SPIRIT.

Why is the HOLY SPIRIT important? There is not enough space or time to answer this question but the short answer is:

- A believer’s assurance of salvation. Romans 8:16 - 16 The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children,

- Intercedes for believers. Romans 8:26 26 In the same way the Spirit also joins to help in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us[15] Some mss omit for us with unspoken groanings .

- Guarantee, security deposit and seal of approval. 2 Corinthians 1:22 - 22 He has also sealed us and given us the Spirit as a down payment in our hearts. The HOLY SPIRIT is GOD’S gift to all believers to guarantee and assure them that what they believe is true and is secured by GOD. This scripture helps us better understand Romans 8:16.

Hold on to your hats because a mighty wind is about to blow.

Let’s read Acts 1:1-8:

Prologue
1 I wrote the first narrative, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach 2 until the day He was taken up, after He had given orders through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen. 3 After He had suffered, He also presented Himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during 40 days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

Doctor Luke was commissioned by Theophilus to research the life, death, resurrection and ascension of JESUS. As a result, he produced the Gospel According to Luke. Theophilus commissioned Doctor Luke to produce another study giving the events following the ascension of JESUS and the arrival of the HOLY SPIRIT. The book of Acts could well be titled “The Acts of the Holy Spirit through the Apostles.”

The Holy Spirit Promised

4 While He was together with them,[1] Or He was eating with them, or He was lodging with them He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father’s promise. “This,” [He said, “is what]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. you heard from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So when they had come together, they asked Him, “Lord, at this time are You restoring the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or periods that the Father has set by His own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends[2] Lit the end of the earth.”

This must have been an exciting time and yet a sad time for the disciples of JESUS.
As believers, paying attention and obeying what GOD tells us is critical. JESUS instructs the group with HIM not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for the coming of the HOLY SPIRIT. JESUS reminded them that John the Baptist baptized with water but in a few days, they would be baptized with the HOLY SPIRIT. A mighty event was about to happen in a specific place and CHRIST did not want HIS followers to miss it. We learn in Acts 1:15 there are 120 believers gathered in one place in Jerusalem during the celebration of Pentecost waiting for the coming of the HOLY SPIRIT.
While JESUS was still with them, HIS disciples asked HIM a question.
Is this when YOU will establish Your Kingdom? The disciples have ceased to think they know what is about to happen. They are bold enough to just ask. That is what CHRIST wants from believers. Ask if you are unsure. There are some questions no believer will get an answer, such as, “When are YOU coming again?”

JESUS explains that all timing was left to GOD. We see this truth reflected when CHRIST instructed the group to remain in Jerusalem because in a “few days”, the HOLY SPIRIT was coming. HE did not give a specific day or time. All things are in GOD’S timing and according to HIS plan and purpose. JESUS’ followers had a choice – wait or leave. Waiting is hard to do in our fast paced world but there are times the LORD tells us to wait. HE is preparing for the right moment to act.

Knowing the moment this event will happen is not as important as the fact that it will happen. When it happens, believers will receive power and will be empowered to carry the gospel to others. When it happens they will know it and are instructed to share the Good News.

First, believers will witness or share the Good News to those closest to them, you can think of those closest to them – family and friends (Jerusalem), then to those next closest to them (Judea), then to those even further from their present center of influence (Samaria) and then to all the world. This is the Great Commission. Begin witnessing where you are and then move out in ever widening circles from your center of influence as GOD leads you.

Let’s read Acts 2:1-11:

Pentecost

1 When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying. 3 And tongues, like flames of fire that were divided, appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages, as the Spirit gave them ability for speech. 5 There were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 When this sound occurred, the multitude came together and was confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 And they were astounded and amazed, saying,[1] Other mss add to one another “Look, aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 How is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites; those who live in Mesopotamia, in Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and • Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome, both Jews and • proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own languages the magnificent acts of God.”

Pentecost in the Greek language is fifty. Pentecost was celebrated fifty (50) days after the Passover. It was a huge celebration and attracted Jews from a wide area and was open to servants, sons, daughters, Levites, the fatherless, the widow and the stranger or foreigner. Do you get the picture? It was a celebration open to all people. JESUS is no respecter of persons, HE is available to all. Pentecost was also a time when family members were taught about GOD’S nature, a time to remind them how GOD had cared for them, it was a time of renewal and recommitment to GOD. It is awesome that GOD chose this moment to send the HOLY SPIRIT to indwell all believers.

GOD’S timing is awesome. JESUS was crucified on Passover. Passover was the time when the Jews were celebrating GOD’S deliverance of the Jews from the bondage of slavery in Egypt. GOD led the Israelites to the Promised Land. JESUS died during the celebration of Passover to free mankind from the bondage and slavery of sin and death. As a result of HIS death, JESUS ushered in a new dynamic of personal relationship between all believers and GOD through Himself. This dynamic relationship will lead all believers to the eternal Promised Land as they journey through life serving the LORD. GOD chose to introduce the HOLY SPIRIT in a dramatic way during the celebration of Pentecost, a celebration open to a wide variety of worshipers.

The HOLY SPIRIT came from heaven into the world making a sound like a violent wind. A violent wind gets the attention of all people in an area. I can imagine the first impulse was for people in Jerusalem to run outside to see what was going on. Wind represents power. Wind comes and goes without humans knowing where it comes from or where it is going. The same is with the HOLY SPIRIT and those empowered by the HOLY SPIRIT.

One hundred and twenty (120) believers were gathered in a house waiting for the coming of the SPIRIT that JESUS said would be coming. Then the HOLY SPIRIT was manifested as tongues like flames of fire. Fire represents cleansing. (Keep in mind the HOLY SPIRIT is a person. HE is the third person in the Trinity.)

Exodus 19:16-19: Fire prepared the way for GOD to come down to the mountain when HE gave the Ten Commandments to Moses and the people.

16 On the third day, when morning came, there was thunder and lightning, a thick cloud on the mountain, and a loud trumpet sound, so that all the people in the camp shuddered. 17 Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke because the Lord came down on it in fire. Its smoke went up like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain shook violently. 19 As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him in the thunder.

Remember GOD spoke to Moses through a burning bush. Fire represents cleansing. So it is fitting that GOD manifested the HOLY SPIRIT as flames of fire. Fire not only
represents cleansing but also power. These were outward, visible signs of an internal change being brought about within each believer.

As evidence of the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT, believers began speaking in known languages extolling the magnificent acts of GOD. The violent wind had resulted in people coming out into the streets and then they begin hearing this group of people speaking in their mother language.

Further, in the scripture they think those speaking in their mother tongue are drunk. But Peter puts that to rest.

Notice that in verse 4, it speaks of them being “filled” with the HOLY SPIRIT. There is much discussion regarding a believer being “filled.” Is it a onetime filling the moment believers ask CHRIST to forgive them of their sins and to come into their lives or is it an ongoing process?

I believe that the moment we receive CHRIST as our SAVIOR we are filled with the HOLY SPIRIT. As we journey with CHRIST and seek HIM, there will be explosive moments of Spiritual growth which seem like a special filling of the HOLY SPIRIT.
Housed within our earth suit or flesh or earthly body are two (2) powers – the flesh and the Spirit. Both have strong holds on our lives. All believers always have the right to choose. Often, when a believer first accepts CHRIST as his/her SAVIOR, there is a burst of joy, power and confidence. Over time a believer allows the flesh to creep back into the power position, moving the Spirit out of the control position. It is a constant battle taming the flesh and bringing it under the authority of the Spirit. Yielding control of our lives to GOD is hard to do and is often a process.

In my life, I think I became a Christian at about nine (9) years old. (Notice, I think) I had many ups and downs in my Spiritual journey. I wanted to live the Christian life but I lived it in the power of my flesh. It was up to me to live the Christian life. I was unaware of the power that lived within me. But also there was a fear preventing me from giving control of my life to GOD. I had the notion that GOD would want me to be a missionary to Africa and I did not want to do that. I struggled for over thirty (30) years trying to live the Christian life in my own strength. I finally gave up one morning while driving to work and said, “LORD, I just cannot live the Christian life as I think it should be lived. I have tried to clean my life up but I just cannot do it. I will make a deal with YOU. Take my life as it is, the good and the bad and YOU give me the strength to live the Christian life.”

WOW!!! What a moment! From that moment, I have known that I belong to CHRIST. I have not lived as I should but I have known that GOD has been with me every step of the way. That moment was a filling of the HOLY SPIRIT.

I had the HOLY SPIRIT in my life but I had squelched the HOLY SPIRIT from controlling my life. When I released the tight hold I had on the control of my life, it released the power of the HOLY SPIRIT to begin controlling my life. I do not look at the “WOW” moment in my life as a separate filling of the HOLY SPIRIT but me making room in my life to allow the Spirit to rule more of my life. The more I empty of the flesh the more the HOLY SPIRIT can occupy.

I had an experience about five (5) years ago, when I went through “Experiencing God” written by Dr. Henry Blackaby, LifeWay Press. GOD revealed other areas in my life that I had not trusted HIM with. There will be other moments and opportunities for me release more space to the LORD as I continue my journey with HIM.

I have said all of this to say, I think being filled with the HOLY SPIRIT is an ongoing process in the life of a believer. The believer is dying to self as he/she goes through the process of sanctification. The more believers can empty themselves of the desires of the flesh, when they do it makes more room for the HOLY SPIRIT. But a word of caution, this process comes about through relationship as believers get to know GOD and trust HIM to lead and guide their lives. When believers try to decide what they need to do themselves, they will end up a basket case. Seek the relationship first and trust GOD to do a good work in you. This may take a lifetime. Keep in mind believers were not created for time but for eternity.

Let’s read Acts 2:12-16:

12 And they were all astounded and perplexed, saying to one another, “What could this be?” 13 But some sneered and said, “They’re full of new wine!”

Peter’s Sermon

14 But Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: “Jewish men and all you residents of Jerusalem, let this be known to you and pay attention to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it’s only nine in the morning.[2] Lit it’s the third hour of the day 16 On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

Those hearing and observing all that was going on were astounded and perplexed. Things of the Spirit have to be understood by the born-again Spirit. Some observers thought the believers were drunk. Peter had to set them straight but it gave him the opportunity preach the Gospel.

Peter got their attention and told them that he was going to explain what they had been observing. This likely helped them to focus on what he was about to say.
Peter began his sermon using scripture which was likely familiar to the hearers.
We will have to wait until next week to see how Preacher Peter did with his first sermon.

The fact that the very person, who denied CHRIST three (3) times before HIS crucifixion, has been called to preach the first sermon of salvation shows what the power of GOD can do with a changed life.

Warts and all, GOD has a plan for each believer.

Are you a true witness for CHRIST? If not, why not? Confess it to the LORD and ask HIM to help you be all that you are capable of being for HIS Glory.

Jesus' Resurrection: Fact or Fiction - Luke 24 - April 12, 2009

Sunday School Lesson – Jesus’ Resurrection: Fact or Fiction? – April 12, 2009

This is lesson two (2) in our series of study entitled “Gospel Crossroads.”

Our scripture is Luke 24:1-12, 36-40, 44-46.

We studied the crucifixion last Sunday. A righteous man dying for a cause shows his commitment to the cause and can inspire others to continue the cause. Combine the righteous man’s commitment to death followed by HIS resurrection from the dead, now that is proof beyond question. JESUS was and is the SON of GOD and our SAVIOR.

Since the resurrection of JESUS is the linchpin of the Christian faith, some try to disprove it. It is okay to wonder or question but explore to find the truth. Years ago, I had questions regarding the resurrection. I will share with you some of the scripture that helped me to resolve those questions.

To do a thorough study of the resurrection, one needs to examine the events recorded in all the gospels but time and space limits us for today’s study.

Let’s read Luke 24:1-8:

1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they[1] Other mss add and other women with them came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3 They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes. 5 So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground.[2] Lit and inclined their faces to the ground “Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” asked the men. 6 “He is not here, but He has been resurrected! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, 7 saying, ‘The • Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day’?” 8 And they remembered His words.

First, let’s review the events on Friday:

JESUS was crucified on Friday from about 9:00 AM to about 3:00 PM. JESUS needed to be buried before sundown because the Sabbath would begin at sundown. Those who had agreed to bury HIM needed to move quickly. We read in John 19:38-42 those who stepped forward to care for the body of JESUS.

Jesus’ Burial

38 After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus—but secretly because of his fear of the Jews—asked Pilate that he might remove Jesus’ body. Pilate gave him permission, so he came and took His body away. 39 Nicodemus (who had previously come to Him at night) also came, bringing a mixture of about 75 pounds[20] Lit 100 litrai; a Roman litrai = 12 ounces of myrrh and aloes. 40 Then they took Jesus’ body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the aromatic spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews. 41 There was a garden in the place where He was crucified. A new tomb was in the garden; no one had yet been placed in it. 42 They placed Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation and since the tomb was nearby.

Joseph of Arimathea was a member of the Jewish Sanhedrin and Nicodemus was a Pharisee and also a member of the Sanhedrin. We will review some of the details of this scripture later.

Our scripture today records the events early Sunday morning:

Early Sunday morning a group of ladies (Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them) equipped with more spices went to JESUS’ tomb. They planned to complete the embalming process.

Let’s think about this for a moment. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus had already put 75 pounds of myrrh and aloes on HIS body and wrapped HIM in linen cloths and apparently added additional aromatic spices. (Some scripture estimates that about 100 pounds.) The Jews did not embalm but they allow the body to decay.

They would use aromatic spices to help mask the stench associated with a decaying body. When the body was reduced to bones, they placed the bones in an ossuary for final burial.

The ladies wanted to complete the process of adding additional spices in honor of JESUS. Think about it. It was not a pleasant task they had to do. Under normal circumstances the body would be stinking. Out of love they went to minister to JESUS. Out of this love, they were blessed beyond belief.

Other scripture tells us, they wondered how they would roll the stone away from the opening to the tomb. The Romans had rolled a stone over the opening to the tomb, sealed it and placed two (2) guards to guard it. It was rumored that JESUS’ disciples had a plan to steal JESUS’ body and declare that HE had risen from the dead.

To their surprise, as they approached the tomb, they saw that the stone had been rolled away. They went into the tomb expecting to find JESUS’ body. Instead they encountered two (2) men in dazzling clothes. The sudden appearance of these men in dazzling clothes startled them and they bowed down to them. Other scripture refers to the men as angels. The angels immediately asked the ladies a question and gave them information to jog their memories:

“Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” asked the men. 6 “He is not here, but He has been resurrected! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, 7 saying, ‘The • Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day’?” 8 And they remembered His words.

Grief can block our ability to think clearly. This reminder was a thrilling moment for them, especially when confirmed by angels. They went immediately to tell the “Good News”. JESUS had been resurrected!!!

They ran to tell the disciples the Good News.

Let’s read Luke 24:9-12:

9 Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest. 10 • Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things. 11 But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths.[3] Other mss add lying there So he went home, amazed at what had happened.

Peter doubts the accuracy of the ladies account of events. So he ran to check it out and he was amazed.

JESUS walked along with two (2) disciples on the road to Emmaus. As they walked along they discussed the recent events regarding the crucifixion of JESUS. JESUS gave them a thorough overview of the events quoting scripture. It was getting late and the two (2) disciples invited JESUS to stay the night with them. When JESUS blessed the bread their eyes were opened and HE allowed them to see WHO HE was. Why did HE wait to reveal Himself? HE wanted their attention to be on the scripture. It was a teaching moment that was sealed by the resurrected JESUS. JESUS vanished from their sight. Immediately the two (2) disciples traveled the seven (7) miles back to Jerusalem to tell the disciples about their experience. I think during that seven (7) miles walk they discussed the scripture that HE quoted to them.

Let’s read Luke 24: 36-40:

36 And as they (The two (2) disciples from Emmaus) were saying these things, He Himself stood among them. He said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost. 38 “Why are you troubled?” He asked them. “And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Look at My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself! Touch Me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” 40 Having said this, He showed them His hands and feet.

“They” in verse 36 are the two (2) disciples from Emmaus. As they were giving an account of their experience, JESUS appeared among them. JESUS spoke but the disciples were startled and terrified. They thought they were seeing a spirit or ghost. JESUS questioned the disciples. HE knew they had doubts, yet HE knew HE had taught them well and now was not the time for them to fall away. They had much work to do. HE invited them to touch HIM because HE knew they thought HE had returned as a spirit or ghost.

JESUS understands our doubts, questions and fears. HE wants all believers to know and embrace the truth.

To further demonstrate that HE was flesh and bones, HE asked if they had anything to eat? They gave HIM a piece of broiled fish and HE ate it.

Notice JESUS said HE was “flesh and bones.” HE did not say flesh, bones and “blood.” Many think HIS blood is eternally preserved in heaven as a testimony that HE shed HIS blood to pay for the sins of all who believe in HIM. If HE still had HIS blood, Satan, the great accuser, would point a finger at JESUS and say, “Look, HIS passion never happened.” Physical life is in the blood but GOD given life is in the power of GOD.

Let’s read Luke 24:44-46:

44 Then He told them, “These are My words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. 46 He also said to them, “This is what is written:[11] Other mss add and thus it was necessary that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day,

Once JESUS calmed the disciples, HE began reminding them of what HE had taught them prior to HIS crucifixion. Notice that JESUS used the scripture to confirm HIS passion for mankind. When we doubt, it is scripture that provides the answers and confirmation. That is why believers must study and know the Bible.

As mentioned earlier, here are a few verses that helped me confirm the crucifixion.
Before the crucifixion of JESUS, JESUS’ brothers did not believe in HIM:

John 7:1-5:

The Unbelief of Jesus’ Brothers

1 After this, Jesus traveled in Galilee, since He did not want to travel in Judea because the • Jews were trying to kill Him. 2 The Jewish Festival of Tabernacles[1] Or Booths [2] One of 3 great Jewish religious festivals, along with Passover and Pentecost; Ex 23:14; Dt 16:16 was near, 3 so His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea so Your disciples can see Your works that You are doing. 4 For no one does anything in secret while he’s seeking public recognition. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 (For not even His brothers believed in Him.)

After the crucifixion of JESUS, HIS brothers saw JESUS in a different light:

Let’s read Acts 1:12-14: (This is after JESUS ascended into heaven.)

United in Prayer

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olive Grove, which is near Jerusalem—a Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 When they arrived, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. 14 All these were continually united in prayer,[3] Other mss add and petition along with the women, including Mary[4] Or prayer, with their wives and Mary the mother of Jesus, and His brothers.

The crucifixion and the resurrection of JESUS changed the hearts of the brothers of JESUS. They became believers and leaders in the Christian church.

After the conversion of Paul on the road to Damascus, Paul checked some of the facts regarding JESUS in Paul’s letter to the Galatians.

Galatians 1:11-19: (The focal points are found in verses 18 and 19.)

11 Now I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel preached by me is not based on a human point of view.[5] Lit not according to man 12 For I did not receive it from a human source and I was not taught it, but it came by a revelation from Jesus Christ. 13 For you have heard about my former way of life in Judaism: I persecuted God’s church to an extreme degree and tried to destroy it; 14 and I advanced in Judaism beyond many contemporaries among my people, because I was extremely zealous for the traditions of my ancestors. 15 But when God, who from my mother’s womb set me apart[6] Jr 1:5 and called me by His grace, was pleased 16 to reveal His Son in me, so that I could preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone.[7] Lit flesh and blood 17 I did not go up to Jerusalem to those who had become apostles before me; instead I went to Arabia and came back to Damascus. 18 Then after three years I did go up to Jerusalem to get to know • Cephas,[8] Other mss read Peter (The Apostle Peter) and I stayed with him 15 days. 19 But I didn’t see any of the other apostles except James, the Lord’s brother.

The Apostle Paul was taught by JESUS. After three (3) years he went to Jerusalem and met with Cephas (the Apostle Peter) and the brother of JESUS, James. James, the brother of JESUS, was the head of the Christian church in Jerusalem. The point being, when Paul met with James, it was a few years after the resurrection of JESUS and HIS brothers were true believers. The resurrection of JESUS made the difference for HIS brothers.

Before the crucifixion, they thought of JESUS as a dreamer and egoist who wanted to draw attention to Himself. After the resurrection, HIS brothers saw the truth that their brother was the true SON of GOD and they believed in HIM as their SAVIOR.

There are many more references confirming the resurrection of JESUS.

I will give you one more reference. 1 Corinthians 15:3-8: (This is The Apostle Paul writing to the Christians in Corinth.

3 For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He appeared to • Cephas, then to the Twelve. 6 Then He appeared to over 500 brothers at one time, most of whom remain to the present, but some have fallen • asleep.[3] Jn 11:11; Ac 7:60; 1 Th 4:13–15 7 Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one abnormally born, He also appeared to me.

JESUS HAS RISEN – BELIEVE AND REJOICE IN YOUR SALVATION!!!

Has JESUS appeared to you? Make this Easter a true Easter by asking CHRIST to forgive you of your sins and to come into your heart today.

If you are a believer and have not been living the abundant life in JESUS, confess it and ask HIM to restore the joy of your salvation.

HE LIVES. HOW DO I KNOW HE LIVES? BECAUSE, HE LIVES IN MY HEART.

Jesus: Delusional Dreamer or God's Messiah? - Luke 23:33, 35-49 - April 5, 2009

Sunday School Lesson - Jesus: Delusional Dreamer or God’s Messiah? – April 5, 2009

This is lesson one (1) in our series of study entitled “Gospel Crossroads.”

Our scripture is Luke 23:33, 35-49; Matthew 27:50-54.

Our scripture for the month of April will be:
April 5 – Luke 23:33, 35-49 – Jesus: Delusional Dreamer or God’s Messiah?
April 12 – Luke 24:1-8, 36-40, 44-46 – Jesus’ Resurrection: Fact or Fiction?
April 19 – Acts 1:4-8 and 2:1-4, 12-16 – Jesus’ Followers: True Witnesses or Wishful Thinkers?
April 26 – Acts 2:22-24, 32-41 – Jesus the Savior: Accept or Reject?

We begin a new series of study. Who is JESUS? How a person answers that question is important. Many religions acknowledge JESUS as a prophet. History tells us that HE lived on earth. GOD’S Word tells us the complete plan of GOD regarding the birth, life, death, resurrection, ascension and return of JESUS. People can read and study the facts in the Bible but each person must decide on his/her own whether or not JESUS was delusional or the promised Messiah.

It takes a step of faith to believe. A step of faith is a simple thing but often so hard to
do. We want the confirmation that CHRIST is real before we take the step of faith to believe. However, it is only after we take the step of faith that we have the confirmation in our heart. We can believe that bridge will hold us but until we get on the bridge, we won’t know for sure.

JESUS had been tried, beaten and sentenced to die upon the cross for sedition. The Pharisees were upset with JESUS because HE did not observe their legalist practices and the Sadducees were upset with HIM because HE cleansed the temple. These two (2) groups banded together and accused JESUS of blasphemy. The Roman government officials could not condemn a person to death for blasphemy; however, they could sentence a non-Roman to death by crucifixion for sedition or a serious crime. The Roman government officials did not think JESUS was guilty of sedition but political pressure persuaded them to sentence JESUS to death.

Crucifixion was a horrible way to execute a human being. It was a long process, designed to inflict maximum pain, torture and humiliation. The person being crucified basically died from suffocation. The will of a person to live would cause the victim to keep pushing themselves up to get a breath of air. Each time the victim would slump and push himself up it inflected great pain on his body. If the Romans wanted to speed up the death process, they would break the legs of the victim(s).

John 19:31-37:

31 Since it was the preparation day,[12] Jn 19:14 the Jews did not want the bodies to remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special[13] Lit great day). They requested that Pilate have the men’s legs broken and that [their bodies]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. be taken away.[14] Dt 21:22–23 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with Him. 33 When they came to Jesus, they did not break His legs since they saw that He was already dead. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. 35 He who saw this has testified[15] Jn 1:14–15,34 so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth.[16] Jn 21:24 36 For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled:[17] Jn 13:18; 17:12; 19:24 Not one of His bones will be broken.[18] Ex 12:46; Nm 9:12; Ps 34:20 37 Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the One they pierced.[19] Zch 12:10

JESUS suffered great pain but HE willingly gave HIS life for every person who has ever lived on earth or will ever live on earth. Even though HE gave HIS life to satisfy the sin debt for all people, each person must accept and acknowledge what CHRIST did in his /her behalf. GOD works within the heart of every person to give him/ her the opportunity to accept or reject JESUS as his/her SAVIOR. This requires a step of faith and is as simple as “LORD, I believe.” It is not the words uttered but the attitude of the heart. I read an account of a man simply saying “LORD, I give up.” That was his step of faith. Circumstances had brought him to the point of surrender.

Satan does not want a person to become a born-again believer. Satan wants a person to wait, think about such a decision and gather more facts. Satan tells many that they have plenty of time, so just wait. Satan does not tell you that you are being robbed - of the joy of the LORD, of the joy of building a loving, intimate relationship with HIM and of the confirmation of the HOLY SPIRIT in your heart that you are GOD’S children.

Let’s read Luke 23:33, 35-38:

33 When they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left.

35 The people stood watching, and even the leaders kept scoffing: “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One!” 36 The soldiers also mocked Him. They came offering Him sour wine[12] Ps 69:22 LXX 37 and said, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!” 38 An inscription was above Him:[13]
Other mss add written in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew letters

THIS ISTHE KING OF THE JEWS

The condemned person had to carry his own crossbeam. We know from other scripture that Simon the Cyrenian JESUS was forced to carry the crossbeam for JESUS. The crowd of people who followed along was a mixture of those who loved JESUS, curiosity seeks, those who hated HIM, those who wanted to see if HE would do something spectacular and the list goes on.

The question I ask you and I ask myself, if I were among that crowd, why would I be going along with HIM? I would likely be a skeptic. I would likely think,” I have heard of this famous preacher, WHO could heal the sick, cure the blind, cast out demons and raise the dead. I want to see HIM get out of this situation. If HE does get out of it, I might consider following HIM.” I think verse 35, comes close to describing my attitude toward JESUS.

The soldiers nailed HIM to the cross and later offered HIM sour wine when HE said “I thirst.” The wine could have been like a pain killer or a cruel way to keep HIM alive longer. JESUS refused the sour wine.

It was common for the crime a person committed to be placed on a sign and displayed above the victim’s head. This was to let all onlookers to know why the person was being crucified. Pilot had the sign “This is the King of the Jews” placed above the head of JESUS. We find in the Gospel of John 19:20-22:

20 Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew,[8] Or Aramaic Latin, and Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that He said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’ ” 22 • Pilate replied, “What I have written, I have written.”

In my opinion, I think Pilot saw JESUS as the Messiah. It would not surprise me to visit with Pilot in heaven.

JESUS was crucified between two (2) criminals. This added to the humiliation and disgrace of JESUS. HE was counted as a common criminal, yet without cause.

Let’s read Luke 23:39-43:

39 Then one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at[14] Or began to blaspheme Him: “Aren’t You the Messiah? Save Yourself and us!” 40 But the other answered, rebuking him: “Don’t you even fear God, since you are undergoing the same punishment? 41 We are punished justly, because we’re getting back what we deserve for the things we did, but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me[15] Other mss add Lord when You come into Your kingdom!” 43 And He said to him, “• I assure you: Today you will be with Me in paradise.”

One of the criminals yelled insults at JESUS. He must have heard of JESUS because he said “Aren’t YOU the Messiah?” He likely heard of all the miracles JESUS had performed, so he would try to coerce HIM into using HIS power to free them. This criminal had a self-serving attitude toward CHRIST. Many of us have this same attitude. JESUS, do something spectacular and I will believe in YOU. I used to think that, until, I realized that whatever HE would have done, I would have explained away as something that was going to happen anyway.

Criminal one is defiant in the face of death. This reveals the attitude of his heart.
Criminal two recognized and acknowledged his fate. He realized that he was about to come face to face with GOD. In an indirect manner he seemed to acknowledge his sins, which revealed a repentant heart. He acknowledged that JESUS had done nothing wrong. We do not know if he had heard of JESUS before this moment but he recognized JESUS as an innocent man about to die for something HE did not do. But notice what else criminal two said in verse 42 – “Jesus, remember me[15] Other mss add Lord when You come into Your kingdom!”. I think his statement was as good as LORD, I believe in YOU. JESUS thought so because HE said, “• I assure you: Today you will be with Me in paradise.”

The moment we acknowledge JESUS as our SAVIOR our citizenship is in heaven. Criminal two felt unworthy and asked JESUS to remember him. JESUS saw his heart and gave him the most exciting news he could get – “Today you will be with ME in paradise.” Those must have been comforting words to someone who felt so unworthy. I wonder if criminal two’s witness and JESUS’ confirmation that he would be with HIM in paradise caused criminal one to reconsider his plight. We do not know. Only eternity will reveal the answer.

JESUS told criminal two that today he would be with HIM in paradise. In essence paradise is heaven. Some believe until JESUS paid the penalty for sin, paradise was the holding place for departed spirits who acknowledged and believed in GOD awaiting the day JESUS would give HIS life for the sins of mankind.

The word “paradise” comes from the Persian word for “garden or parks.” When the word “paradise” was used it referred to the lush, beautiful gardens located at palaces. When “paradise” was used in the Greek translation of the Septuagint, it was used to describe the Garden of Eden. In the New Testament “paradise” refers to heaven. If “paradise” is where JESUS is, then that is good enough for me.

It is also important to know that the moment a born-again Christian dies he/she is present with the LORD.

Let’s read Luke23:44-49:

The Death of Jesus
44 It was now about noon,[16] Lit about the sixth hour and darkness came over the whole land[17] Or whole earth until three,[18] Lit the ninth hour 45 because the sun’s light failed.[19] Other mss read three, and the sun was darkened The curtain of the sanctuary was split down the middle. 46 And Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I entrust My spirit.”[20] Ps 31:5 Saying this, He breathed His last. 47 When the • centurion saw what happened, he began to glorify God, saying, “This man really was righteous!” 48 All the crowds that had gathered for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, went home, striking their chests.[21] Mourning 49 But all who knew Him, including the women who had followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.

Matthew 27:50-54: (Matthew gives us additional information.)

50 Jesus shouted again with a loud voice and gave up His spirit. 51 Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary[25] A heavy curtain separated the inner room of the temple from the outer. was split in two from top to bottom; the earth quaked and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened and many bodies of the saints who had gone to their rest[26] Lit saints having fallen asleep; that is, they had died were raised. 53 And they came out of the tombs after His resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many. 54 When the • centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, “This man really was God’s Son!”[27] Or the Son of God

JESUS was crucified about 9:00 AM and died about 3:00 PM. HIS death was marked by dramatic physical phenomenon – darkness came over the whole land about noon until about 3:00 PM. There was an earthquake. The curtain in temple sanctuary split from top to bottom. The reason the curtain was split from top to bottom was because GOD split it. This curtain separated the sanctuary from the Holy of Holies and the priest was the only person allowed to go into the Holy of Holies. Now that JESUS had given HIS life to pay the sin debt GOD had imposed upon mankind, the opportunity for all people to come to GOD through JESUS was open. Believers and those who desire to be forgiven of their sin no longer need to go through a priest to petition GOD. All can go to GOD through CHRIST for salvation and once saved, believers can go directly to GOD with all their requests. Once believers acknowledge JESUS as their SAVIOR, they, experience the miracle of rebirth, receive eternal life, are born into GOD’S family becoming HIS children and become citizens of heaven.

JESUS uttered HIS last words which expressed complete trust in the FATHER and revealed that JESUS gave up HIS spirit into the care of the FATHER. This moment of trust and complete dependence upon the FATHER touched the heart of the centurion.

The events of the day got the attention of the centurion. He acknowledged JESUS as a righteous man. The events, also, got the attention of the crowd. They went away beating their chests, which was a sign of grief over the death of JESUS. Beating the chests was an acknowledgement and recognition of personal guilt and involvement in the death of JESUS. The darkness likely revealed that their actions were condemned by GOD and the earthquake confirmed they had just witnessed the death of a Godly man.

When a person can acknowledge guilt and personal sin he/she needs to take the step to seek forgiveness.

Those who knew JESUS, including the women, did not feel the guilt and remorse because they were not party to HIS conviction. They knew HE was the SON of GOD and knew these events confirmed that HE was GOD’S SON. JESUS remained faithful to the FATHER and to HIS calling to the end.

If JESUS had taken matters into HIS own hands and come down from the cross, HE would not have saved Himself, the thief on the cross next to HIM or anyone else. The fact that JESUS remained faithful to the end by giving HIS life, HE saved the world from the penalty of sin and death and secured eternal life for all who believe in HIM.
Does this event prove that JESUS was the SON of GOD? No. If not, then what event proves that HE was who HE said HE was? What happened on EASTER?
