My Ongoing Mission - Romans 15:14-21, 30-33; 16:25-27 - November 30, 2008

Sunday School Lesson – My Ongoing Mission – November 30, 2008

This is our final study in Romans. Our scripture is Romans 15:14-21, 30-33; 16:25-27.

Often when we think of missions, we think foreign missions but mission work is all around each believer wherever he or she is. The great commission is to go into the entire world. A believer’s world is where he or she is at any given moment. Our LORD calls all of HIS children to missions. JESUS said even a cup of cold water is important when serving the LORD. Some believers have a special calling by GOD to serve in specific places either at home or in another country. Most of us serve in the world around us, often members of our family.

To me it is amazing, given the perils of travel in Paul’s day, how much he traveled. The key is that he was led by the LORD. It is vital that a believer is led by the LORD when he or she reaches out to others with the gospel message.

We have studied many Christian foundational issues in Paul’s letter to the Romans. Believers must be on a firm spiritual foundation and understand their prejudices to more effectively minister to others. When people become Christians it is not one size fits all. All are saved but each is shaped by his or her heritage, environment, education, mental ability, training, notions, background and willingness to allow GOD, through the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT, to shape him or her spiritually. It is all about growth, maturity and relationship with the LORD. It is all about truth and not about notions and assumptions. It is knowing GOD through the revelation of the HOLY SPIRIT and not just knowing about GOD.

It would be nice if the moment we become Christians, we were zapped with instant spiritual maturity. But that is not the case because GOD made us to seek, search, discover and build confidence and trust in HIM. HE rejoices in revealing truth to HIS children and seeing us grow spiritually. It is an awesome journey as we get to know GOD in a more intimate way through our relationship with HIM. The beauty is that knowing HIM and building a relationship with HIM is not exclusive to a certain group but it available to every believer. All it takes is a decision. FATHER, I want to know you and have an intimate, loving relationship with you. YOU show me truth as I continue to study YOUR Word and obediently serve YOU.

Many of us study the Bible, go to Bible studies, teach, preach, pray and read Christian literature, yet, we seem to wonder why GOD isn’t more evident in our lives. I see it in my own life. I get caught up in feeding on GOD’S Word and fall short of putting what I am learning into action as GOD provides the opportunity. It is more comfortable to remain in our comfort zone than to step outside and become involved. It is easier to tell others what they are supposed to do and how they are to live than it is to put it into action. When you put your faith into action it requires commitment.

It is vital for every believer to be led by the LORD when he or she becomes involved in any activity. There are some basics which believers automatically know they need to do such as, Bible study, prayer and fellowship with our LORD in order to grow, mature and learn of HIM.

Paul is closing his letter and tells the Christians in Rome that he considers them full of goodness, filled with knowledge and able to instruct one another. Paul tells the Christians in Rome that he had not visited them because he knew they were already serving the LORD and in essence, did not need him. But he wanted to visit them sometime.

Let’s read Romans 15:14-21:

14 Now, my brothers, I myself am convinced about you that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and able to instruct one another. 15 Nevertheless, to remind you, I have written to you more boldly on some points[7] Other mss add brothers because of the grace given me by God 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, serving as a priest of God’s good news. My purpose is that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 17 Therefore I have reason to boast in Christ Jesus regarding what pertains to God. 18 For I would not dare say anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to make the Gentiles obedient by word and deed, 19 by the power of miraculous signs and wonders, and by the power of God’s Spirit. As a result, I have fully proclaimed the good news about the Messiah from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum.[8] A Roman province northwest of Greece on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea 20 So my aim is to evangelize where Christ has not been named, in order that I will not be building on someone else’s foundation, 21 but, as it is written: Those who had no report of Him will see, and those who have not heard will understand.[9] Isaiah 52:15

The Apostle Paul had penned an in-depth spiritual letter on the fundamentals of Christianity to the Christians in Rome. When Paul wrote his letter, he had never been to Rome. Paul was in Corinth where he had encountered a number of problems with Christian fundamentals. It is possible that Paul wanted to let them know where he was regarding the fundamentals since he was in Corinth. He may have wanted the Christians in Rome to not be confused or led astray by what was going on among the Christians in Corinth, if they were aware of it or should ever become aware of it.

He sets the record straight regarding his understanding of where they are coming from spiritually in verse 14 – He calls them brothers and then tells them, “you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and able to instruct one another.”

Paul did not want them to misunderstand the purpose of his letter since he addressed them “boldly on some points.”

Paul stated in Romans 1:1 and Romans 11:13 that he was an apostle and especially called to minister to the Gentiles:

Romans 1:1:

1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
Romans 11:13:
13 Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. In view of the fact that I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry,

Paul considered himself as a priest serving in the temple. Priests offered sacrifices on behalf of the people. Paul presented the Good News to all but especially to the Gentiles. Paul said he was a minister, which was in essence a person carrying out the duties of the priest. The priest in the temple presented the shed blood of the animal as proof to GOD that a worthy sacrifice had been made on behalf of the people asking for forgiveness of their sins. Paul considered that he was presenting CHRIST to the Gentiles and when they accepted CHRIST as atonement for their sins, CHRIST, as priest, presented them to GOD. Paul made it clear that it was CHRIST WHO did the work through him. Rather than sacrificing animals for the sins of those who came to the temple, he presented the perfect sacrifice, CHRIST, WHO willingly gave HIS life for their sins.

Paul confessed that GOD manifested Himself through him, through signs and wonders, but he knew it was GOD’S power and not his. Paul knew that his power came from the HOLY SPIRIT and he taught others by the way he lived his life. He practiced what he preached. Again, he realized that his life’s example was not because of his strength but the strength and power of CHRIST living in and through him.

CHRIST taught Paul and worked through him in word and deed. The word was the gospel and deed was GOD manifesting HIS power through signs and wonders as Paul obediently served HIM.

As a result of CHRIST in him, he had presented CHRIST from Jerusalem to Illyricum (ih LIHR ih kuhm). (This distance has been estimated to be about 1,400 miles.) His ministry had focused on the Gentiles and in areas where other Christians had not been presenting the gospel. Paul was a pioneer missionary.

Paul then quotes the last part of Isaiah 52:15 which referred to CHRIST. CHRIST will fulfill the scriptures and open the eyes of the spiritually blind.

15 so He will sprinkle[11] As the blood of a sacrifice is sprinkled on the altar on behalf of the people [12] Heb 10:22; 12:24 many nations.[13] LXX reads so many nations will marvel at Him Kings will shut their mouths because of Him, For they will see what had not been told them, and they will understand what they had not heard.[14] Rm 15:21

Let’s read Romans 15:30-33:

30 Now I implore you, brothers, through the Lord Jesus Christ and through the love of the Spirit, to agonize together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf: 31 that I may be rescued from the unbelievers in Judea, that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, 32 and that, by God’s will, I may come to you with joy and be refreshed together with you. 33 The God of peace be with all of you. • Amen.

Paul asked his brothers and sisters in CHRIST to “agonize” or to join the fight with him in prayer. Paul had been establishing churches in Gentile territory. He had an offering from the Gentiles for the Christian Jews in Jerusalem. However, there had been dissension among the Jews in Jerusalem regarding Gentile Christians. Some of the Christian Jews believed that the number of Gentile Christians was getting too large and was a threat to them. The Gentile Christians did not follow some of the ceremonial rituals the Jewish Christians followed.

Paul was concerned that when he delivered the gift from the Gentile Christians to the Jewish Christians, they might reject it. Paul also had plans to take the gospel to Spain and his plans were to stop by Rome, visit with them and then continue to Spain. Spain was new territory for the gospel.

According to Paul’s travel plans, he would travel from Corinth to Jerusalem. This was a distance of about 800 miles. Then travel about 1,500 miles from Jerusalem to Rome and continue his trip to Spain which would be an additional 700 miles. Travel in those days could be perilous. So Paul wanted and needed prayer support.

When Christians leave for personal or missionary journey’s they seek our prayers. The unknown is always present and we seek GOD’S guidance and blessings as we journey.

Let’s read Romans 16:25-27:

25 Now to Him who has power to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the sacred secret kept silent for long ages, 26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic Scriptures, according to the command of the eternal God, to advance the obedience of faith among all nations— 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ—to Him be the glory forever![10] Other mss have these vv. at the end of chap 14 or 15. • Amen.

Paul closed his letter. Paul used the words “according to my gospel.”

Paul is referring to the gospel which he has been taught by CHRIST, preached and as presented in his letter. Paul had encountered the living CHRIST on the road to Damascus and he received his teaching from CHRIST through the revelation of truth from the HOLY SPIRIT.

The gospel truth has been available throughout the ages but hidden until revealed by CHRIST. Why has it been hidden? Let’s read 1 Corinthians 2:7-8.

1 Corinthians 2:7-8:

7 On the contrary, we speak God’s hidden wisdom in a • mystery, which God predestined before the ages for our glory. 8 None of the rulers of this age knew it, for if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.[3] Ps 24:7

Once CHRIST was revealed, the scriptures came alive and confirmed CHRIST.

Then Paul ended with the word “GLORY.”

The word “Glory” is a powerful and profoundly descriptive word which in the original Greek meant “opinion” or conjecture.” In the New Testament it carried the meaning of “honor “or “praise.” It is the realization that all a believer has heard and read about GOD has been manifested in his or her experience with CHRIST. This realization was culminated in the stark reality that GOD is WHO HE says HE is and can do what HE says HE can do. GOD said HE would send HIS SON to redeem mankind and HE did.

That realization provides a hearty “GLORY” or “PRAISE THE LORD” from the eyes of the heart because of the realization, comprehension and understanding of what GOD has done. This moment is not the result of an emotional experience but a spiritual revelation, realization and understanding that what we have studied about the character of GOD is confirmed.

As believers obediently serve the LORD and see HIS hand at work, we stand in awe of HIM. We are humbled to think that we, who are such great sinners and have been saved by grace, can be used by GOD in such a mighty way. When we see HIS power and hand at work through us, confirms our faith in HIM and challenges us to yield our lives to HIM even more.

Philippians 4:13:

13 I am able to do all things through Him[2] Other mss read Christ who strengthens me.
1 Peter 1:18-21:
18 For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from the fathers, not with perishable things, like silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. 20 He was destined[24] Or was chosen, or was known before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the times for you 21 who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead[25] Rm 4:24; 10:9 and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

What a heritage we have as believers in CHRIST. In his letter to the Christians in Rome, the Apostle Paul has given believers of today a trove of spiritually rich fundamentals.

My Heart Healthy Church - Romans 14:1, 10-13, 19021 and 15:1-6 - November 23, 2008

Sunday School Lesson – My Heart Healthy Church – November 23, 2008

We continue our study in Romans. This week we will explore Romans 14:1, 10-13, 19-21 and 15:1-6.

The Apostle Paul focuses on the spiritual maturity of believers. The Christians in Rome were about as diverse as a group could be. Some Christians were converted Jews and others were converted Gentiles. Rome was a mixing pot for all sorts of religious practices.

Some of the Christian Jews had come from strict backgrounds where they practiced observing certain festival days, ceremonies and rituals. Being a strict Jew and then becoming a Christian often meant that person would still not eat certain meats and observe certain rituals. Some would not eat approved meats which had been offered to idols in the worship of pagan gods or drink strong drink that could be used in pagan worship.

Paul refers to this group as weak. The Christians making up the weak group were Christians but they were holding onto their former Jewish religious practices like a security blanket.

Then there were the Gentiles and other Jews who believed they had the freedom to worship GOD through CHRIST without having to observe rituals, ceremonies, festival days, etc. Paul referred to this group as strong and he considered himself to be associated with this group. However, Paul recognized that although the strong were just as much a Christian as the weak, the strong had a responsibility not to become a stumbling block to the weak.

Some Christians need more tangible forms of worship than others. Some Christians like formality and some like more emotion. All are Christians but those addicted to drugs, alcohol, gambling, etc. must avoid situations that could cause them to slip back into their addiction. For example, some denominations use real wine to observe the Lord’s Supper. Those addicted to alcohol should avoid taking the wine or asking the church leader to substitute grape juice for them.

We have heard the expression, “When in Rome do as the Romans do.” We take that to mean we can do the gray area things we, as Christians, would not do at home. Another interpretation is even some things we are free to do when we are at home may not be acceptable elsewhere, therefore, we should not do them.

It seems that Paul was saying when you are worshipping or in an area ministering, then avoid or observe the things those you were ministering to avoided or observed. This flexibility was for matters considered to be non-essential.

The strong believer had determined through prayer and study that he or she was free from having to avoid or observe these non-essential matters. But for the sake of those who believed differently, he or she would avoid or observe the same practice. Paul said when he was with those who did not eat meat, he did not eat meat although he was free to do so.

I know years ago, we went to go to Kentucky on mission trips to some of the depressed areas/Appalachian area. The pastors serving those areas used the King James Version of the Bible. They did not accept any other version of the Bible as the Word of GOD. We had to use the King James Bible. Also, the women in that area could not wear slacks or pants. The ladies who went on the trips had to observe proper dress. To minister in these areas we observed their customs. These were non-essential matters to us but important to them. That is not as much of an issue today as it was years ago.

This may seem a bit hypocritical. We have to keep in mind that the fundamentals of Christianity cannot be compromised. In Paul’s day, some Christians thought it was okay to eat meat which had been offered to idols. It was good meat, cheap, nourishing and had zero impact on their faith in CHRIST. Others looked at the same situation differently. The weak Christians may have needed to avoid going to the pagan market because it could spark a desire to rekindle the flames of the flesh. In many of the pagan worship practices they used alcohol or strong drink and sex in their worship. If a Christian came from a pagan worship background it could lure them back into that lifestyle. So they needed to avoid it like the plague. Others looked at purchasing the meat which had been offered to idols as wrong by association or being a bad influence.

I have a friend who is an alcoholic and he did repairs. He was asked to make some repairs at a bar while they were closed. Thinking he would be okay since the bar was closed, he went to the bar. But the smell lured him back to strong drink and he was on a binge for three (3) days. He had to avoid any place that smelled like alcohol for the rest of his life.

Those who are free to drink alcohol need to be sensitive to those who cannot. This even goes for food, betting or risqué photos for those addicted to food, gambling or pornography. How many times do we say or hear said, “Oh, come on a little piece of cake will not hurt you.” For those trying to watch what they eat or diabetics, it does matter.

Let’s read Romans 14:1, 10-12:

1 Accept anyone who is weak in faith,[1] Or weak in the Faith but don’t argue about doubtful issues.

10 But you, why do you criticize your brother? Or you, why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.[4] Other mss read of Christ 11 For it is written: As I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow to Me, and every tongue will give praise to God.[5] Isaiah 45:23; 49:18 12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

The Apostle Paul was telling the Christians in Rome not to argue about doubtful issues. As mentioned earlier, doubtful issues are not the fundamentals of the Christian faith but non-essential, unimportant doctrinal matters.

The strong are not to judge the weak because GOD will judge us all. By the same token the weak are not to criticize or judge the strong. GOD is a righteous judge and HE knows the heart and intent of each individual. Every person is accountable to GOD, so focus upon what you need to do as GOD directs and leads you. You are job number one.

Paul was dealing with spiritual maturity among believers.

Let’s read Romans 14:13, 19-21:

13 Therefore, let us no longer criticize one another, but instead decide not to put a stumbling block or pitfall in your brother’s way.

19 So then, we must pursue what promotes peace and what builds up one another. 20 Do not tear down God’s work because of food. Everything is clean, but it is wrong for a man to cause stumbling by what he eats.
21 It is a noble thing not to eat meat, or drink wine, or do anything that makes your brother stumble.

Christians do not need to focus on the disputable, non-essential matters but focus upon and promote the fundamentals of Christianity. When believers focus upon disputable or non-essential matters they create pitfalls and become stumbling blocks to fellow believers who believe differently.

In Romans 14:14 Paul states - “14 (I know and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself. Still, to someone who considers a thing to be unclean, to that one it is unclean.) ”

Paul is not saying that believers are free agents to decide what is right and what is wrong regarding the fundamentals of the faith. There are absolutes that GOD deems right or wrong. Circumstances do not change this. Married people going through mid-life crisis may say that the feelings they have for a person who is not their spouse is from GOD. That is Satan’s lie. Adultery is never okay with GOD.

Paul is dealing with the issue of food. In verse 14, He used the word for “unclean” that was a technical word meaning ceremonially “unclean” according to the law but not declared “unclean” by GOD. GOD revealed truth to the Apostle Peter, early in his ministry, regarding food. (Acts 10:9-16) Peter was raised a strict Jew, as was Paul. GOD was preparing Peter to minister to the Gentiles who did not observe the ceremonial law regarding food. In Acts 10:9-16 we read about the incident when GOD taught Peter about eating food which he had been taught over the years to avoid.

Acts 10:9-16:

Peter’s Vision
9 The next day, as they were traveling and nearing the city, Peter went up to pray on the housetop at about noon.[2] Lit about the sixth hour 10 Then he became hungry and wanted to eat, but while they were preparing something he went into a visionary state. 11 He saw heaven opened and an object coming down that resembled a large sheet being lowered to the earth by its four corners. 12 In it were all the four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth, and the birds of the sky. 13 Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat!” 14 “No, Lord!” Peter said. “For I have never eaten anything common[3] Perhaps profane, or non-sacred; Jews ate distinctive food according to OT law and their traditions, similar to modern kosher or non-kosher foods. and unclean!” 15 Again, a second time, a voice said to him, “What God has made clean, you must not call common.” 16 This happened three times, and then the object was taken up into heaven.

The words “common “or “unclean” were used by Peter in Acts and Paul in Romans to refer to food that was consumed by people in general, thus, the word “common.” However, certain foods were not eaten by the strict Jews in observance of the ceremonial law. Since CHRIST had come to earth and paid the price for sin, it was no longer man observing certain rituals to be acceptable to GOD. But, it was CHRIST in a person that made him or her clean and acceptable and approachable to GOD.

Each category of believer, the weak and the strong, needed to consider each other’s position regarding these non-essential matters.

The strong needed to build up the weak and support the weak even though the strong had the freedom to do differently.

The issue was really about spiritual growth and maturity. Here is where it can get tricky. First, the weak were Christians but they were hanging onto certain religious practices to make them feel secure in their faith in CHRIST or other reasons. But Paul is focused on the ceremonial reasons.

As mentioned earlier it was like holding onto a security blanket. Their weakness was not to be used to criticize them but to understand where they were coming from spiritually. Those who were strong in their faith did not need to observe these non-essential matters and they did not need to flaunt their spiritual freedom. Their spiritual freedom related to their growing and maturing spiritually and in turn, the strong needed to help the weak to grow and mature spiritually as GOD led them.

Again, this requires the strong to be led by the HOLY SPIRIT because there may be reasons the weak person cannot and should not practice certain freedoms because of his or her past life in the flesh, such as addictions. The focus needs to be on the weak growing and maturing through the study and understanding of GOD’S Word and the power and presence of the HOLY SPIRIT in their lives. The mere fact that spiritually weak believers accept the practices of the strong regarding certain non-essential matters was not the issue. The issue was for GOD to reveal truth to the weak, regarding non-essential matters, through a more intimate relationship with CHRIST.

GOD’S desire and goal for all HIS children is for them to be made into the image of CHRIST. HE wants HIS children to be in unity with HIM and in unity with each other in the living body, which is the living church. This is not the brick and mortar church but the living body of true believers who come from a wide variety of spiritual backgrounds. We need to be mindful of where a weak or strong brother or sister in CHRIST is coming from regarding non-essential matters.

Let’s read Romans 15:1-6:

1 Now we who are strong have an obligation to bear the weaknesses of those without strength, and not to please ourselves. 2 Each one of us must please his neighbor for his good, in order to build him up. 3 For even the • Messiah did not please Himself. On the contrary, as it is written, The insults of those who insult You have fallen on Me.[1] Ps 69:9 4 For whatever was written before was written for our instruction, so that through our endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we may have hope. 5 Now may the God of endurance and encouragement grant you agreement with one another, according to Christ Jesus, 6 so that you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ with a united mind and voice.

Believers who interpret disputable matters more liberally than other believers need not make it an issue with those who interpret these non-essential matters differently. We need to encourage each other in the faith and not cause a problem by focusing upon disputable matters.

When disputable matters become fundamental matters, that is when churches split and denominations have major problems. Paul quotes Psalms 69:9 as related to CHRIST. CHRIST took on the insults people imposed on GOD onto Himself. In essence CHRIST has taken on insults others may heap upon us. So do not get burdened down with rhetoric but focus on the authority of GOD’S Word, the Bible, and GOD though the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT to give understanding to essential and non-essential matters. Everything believers need for discerning spiritual matters, can be found in GOD’S Word. It may be a matter of the believer growing and maturing before understanding can occur.

Revealing truth to a believer is GOD’S responsibility coupled with the willingness of each believer to seek understanding. This is a two (2) way street. The weak may need to grow spiritually and the strong may have gone too far with his or her freedom. Paul is assuming the strong are on solid ground spiritually.

Paul tells them and us that unity is vital. When believers show that they are of one accord it presents a strong testimony to those still in the darkness of sin. When believers quarrel about non-essential matters it becomes a stumbling block and a hindrance to the spread of the gospel.

A heart healthy living body of believers is vital and powerful in the service of the LORD. The question believers must ask themselves, “Are we heart healthy and have the right relationship with CHRIST?”

Key Christian Duties - Romans 13:1-14 - November 16, 2008

Sunday School Lesson - Key Christian Duties – November 16, 2008

We continue our study of Romans. Our scripture is Romans 13:1-14.

America has just elected a new president. As with any new president, we have to wait to determine what kind of president he will be. Campaigning politicians state what they will do when they are elected to a certain office. However, when they occupy that office, they see it is not as easy as they thought. Politicians tend to paint an idealistic picture because the truth would not get them elected and once they are in the office, they have to play the game and be practical.

People being governed tend to rebel against authority. The Apostle Paul was telling the Christians in Rome to submit to authority. Does this mean if the authority goes against GOD’S commands? No! But he was telling the Christians in Rome to obey those who have authority over them so they can function without fear of government intervention.

The Jews, both the non-Christian and the Christian Jews, hated living under Roman rule. They believed only a descendant of David should rule over them. The Christian Jews did have CHRIST ruling their lives but the non-Christian Jews did not.

Paul wanted the Christians in Rome to be good examples and not compromise their testimony by opposing the government. However, when government forbids what GOD commands or commands what GOD forbids, believers are to obey GOD. Is this contradictory for being a good Christian example? It is a matter of how Christians handle themselves. First, Christians have the power of GOD with them. Second, they can pray for opportunity to bring about needed change and ask for courage to speak and act as GOD leads them.

GOD ordains law and order. GOD is the GOD of order. Look at Genesis Chapter one (1) and you will see what GOD made on day one was necessary to support what HE did on day two and so on. GOD knows until HE establishes HIS rule that society needs to be governed to achieve HIS plan and purpose.

GOD ordains the institution of civil government. When civil government functions as GOD ordains, it is a government Christians can support because it functions according to GOD’S plan and purpose; because all who fill the various positions are appointed by GOD. This is considering an ideal government, which is non-existent in this world. The ideal church is also non-existent in this world.

However, the principles for civil and church governance are in place to guide and govern society.

Let’s read Romans 13:1-7:

1 Everyone must submit to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist are instituted by God. 2 So then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God’s command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do good and you will have its approval. 4 For government is God’s servant to you for good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, because it does not carry the sword for no reason. For government is God’s servant, an avenger that brings wrath on the one who does wrong. 5 Therefore, you must submit, not only because of wrath, but also because of your conscience. 6 And for this reason you pay taxes, since the [authorities]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. are God’s public servants, continually attending to these tasks.[1] Lit to this very thing 7 Pay your obligations to everyone: taxes to those you owe taxes, tolls to those you owe tolls, respect to those you owe respect, and honor to those you owe honor.

The word “submit” means to “place under”. Paul tells the Roman Christians that they are to consider that GOD has placed the government and its officials in that position. GOD uses government authority to achieve HIS plan and purpose. HE used rulers to punish the Israelites or to grant them peace. The Israelites would stray from GOD and GOD would allow them to be captured by a foreign ruler. They would repent and seek GOD. They would be freed from oppression to serve GOD. Then they would repeat the same pattern.

Has America strayed from GOD? Will HE allow a liberal agenda to rule our nation because we, who are Christians, have compromised our values? Is our recent election a wakeup call for Christians? Time will tell.

We need to pray for our government and church leaders. They, as well as all Christians, are accountable to GOD. We are to work within the framework of the governing body. In America and in many other countries, governing officials in both the government and church are elected by the majority of the people. What is the will of the majority? Does the majority seek to serve GOD or the flesh? Christian compromise in many countries will tilt the majority in the wrong direction and give rise to a more liberal government or church. Do you see the potential pattern for America?

Paul tells the Christians in Rome that they need to obey the government and not fight against it. I don’t think Paul was saying “roll over and play dead” but to work within the bounds of the law to change what needed to be changed and to focus on serving the LORD. Do not take up arms to overthrow the government because when you do, you will reap the wrath of the government. Pay what you owe to the government. If Christians rebel against the government then they become the target of government. However, living under a ruthless dictator or a Godless government is a different situation. Even then GOD is in control and provides opportunity for living.

Let’s read Romans 13:8-10:

8 Do not owe anyone anything,[2] Or Leave no debt outstanding to anyone except to love one another, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments: Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal,[3] Other mss add you shall not bear false witness do not covet,[4] Ex 20:13–17; Dt 5:17–21 and if there is any other commandment—all are summed up by this: Love your neighbor as yourself.[5] Lv 19:18 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor. Love, therefore, is the fulfillment of the law.

Paul was saying do not get in debt beyond your ability to pay.

Paul tells the Christians in Rome that love conquers all and love is a debt believers owe because CHRIST has bought them with the price of HIS shed blood. As CHRIST loved believers, believers should have unlimited love toward others. This includes the government officials. When a believer truly loves others then he or she will not do the things Paul has listed. When a believer keeps the law of love he or she automatically keeps the law of mankind.

Let’s read Romans 13:11-14:

11 Besides this, knowing the time, it is already the hour for you[6] Other mss read for us to wake up from sleep, for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over, and the daylight is near, so let us discard the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us • walk with decency, as in the daylight: not in carousing and drunkenness; not in sexual impurity and promiscuity; not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no plans to satisfy the fleshly desires.

Paul was looking for the imminent return of CHRIST. He is telling the Christians in Rome not to focus on fighting with the government but to focus on living and spreading the gospel in harmony with the government while there is still time.

Paul used two (2) words for time. The first word for “time” means time as a season or an opportunity. Knowing that CHRIST has come and darkness has been dispelled in the lives of believers is motivation to present the gospel to those still in darkness. So believers in Paul’s day were living in the dawn of a new day and they were closer to the second coming of CHRIST with each passing day.

This knowledge provided every believer with the opportunity to present the gospel to those still lost in the darkness of sin and death. Paul used the second word for “time” to denote chronological time and he stated that “it is already the hour for you.” The believers were living in the season that salvation had come to mankind and the moment had come for those living in that season to live in the power of the HOLY SPIRIT. Believers are to be obedient and present the gospel as GOD leads them.
This message is as relevant to believers today as the day Paul wrote it.

There are two (2) aspects of believers taking action now:

- Christians are living between the first and second coming of CHRIST. Armed with this knowledge Christians, should take off any carryover from their past life in the flesh and put on the full armor of the gospel of light and go into battle, so-to-speak, with darkness each day.

- Christians should live as if CHRIST has already returned to earth for the second time and established HIS rule upon earth. They should walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh as GOD’S representatives to those in darkness.

Paul lists six (6) sins of the flesh. He seems to group them in pairs:

- Strong drink – Partiers – Carousing and drunkenness.

- Sexual – Sexual impurity and promiscuity.

- Attitude – Quarreling and jealousy.

Let others see CHRIST in you by taking off the old life in the flesh and putting on your new life in CHRIST. To do so requires a decision regarding who rules your life, the flesh or GOD.

Christians are GOD’S representatives or the light to those walking in darkness. A Christian may never utter a word but his or her life will speak volumes. Christians are responsible and accountable to GOD.

Not Conformed but Transformed - Romans 12 - November 9, 2008

Sunday School Lesson – Not Conformed but Transformed – November 9, 2008

We continue our study of Romans. Our scripture is Romans 12:1-2, 3-8 and 14-21.

During the month of November we will focus on selected verses in Romans Chapters 12, 13, 14 and 15.

Our study of Chapters 1-11 are foundational and focused on sin and salvation. Chapters 12-15 will focus on how believers are to live. The better believers know and understand the fundamentals of CHRIST in them, the better they can build and develop a loving, intimate relationship with GOD through CHRIST. It is through this relationship that the victorious Christian life can be lived. It is no longer the believer living his or her life in his or her own strength but in the power of the HOLY SPIRIT WHO indwells him or her.

Let’s read Romans 12:1-2:

1 Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship.[1] Or your reasonable service 2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

As mentioned in our last lesson, the Apostle Paul had been a Pharisee before his conversion to CHRIST. He knew the law, the implications of the law and the requirements for making sacrifices to receive forgiveness, when a person failed to live up to the requirements of the law.

Paul used the word “therefore” to refer back to the previous chapters. I am sure all of you know that in the original letter Paul did not write in chapters. He wrote his letter as anyone would write. Scholars divided his letter into chapters long after Paul was with the LORD. Anyway, Paul was referring back. Now he is ready to move from laying the foundation and fundamentals to putting them into action.

I was thinking a few days ago that we, as believers, go to Bible studies, listen to pastors present the truths from the Bible and have our quite time but are we putting into action what we already know? Now, it is important to let GOD reveal to you what HE wants you to do. I have made the mistake of doing for GOD, when GOD wanted me to wait upon HIM and grow spiritually. The key is to be willing to be obedient to GOD. Ask HIM to reveal to you opportunities for service. As HE opens the door of opportunity then take it.

In these two (2) verses Paul used words that a priest would use. As mentioned earlier, Paul knew the Jewish system of sacrifice. Paul knew when a person becomes a believer there is no need for further sacrifice. CHRIST has paid the price for a believer’s sin. Paul captures this in:

1 Corinthians 6:19-20:

19 Do you not know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body.[9] Other mss add and in your spirit, which belong to God.

Paul again reminds believers that even though they are Christians they still live in a body of flesh and it is a constant battle for the Spirit to rule the flesh and not the flesh rule the Spirit. A Christian decides each day and sometimes each moment who will rule.

Paul stated a believer should consider that his or her flesh body has been offered as a sacrifice to GOD. If it has been offered to GOD, then a believer should consider himself or herself dead in the flesh. Therefore, they are no longer alive to the flesh and the dictates of the flesh but they are still in the flesh. It is a Spiritual fact that requires mental comprehension and application.

A dead person is not tempted by anything. A dead person does not feel pain or have any thoughts of their own because he or she is dead. So a believer should consider himself or herself dead. Now to do that a believer must think he or she is dead to the desires of the flesh. When a believer no longer is led by the flesh, then he or she is free to be led by the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT to serve GOD.

In essence, it is all about relationship. Dying to self is the process of sanctification. It is replacing our flesh desire to serve the flesh and to serve GOD through our flesh. It is a natural, genuine desire to be in HIS presence every moment and to know HIM, learn from HIM, be obedient to HIM and serve HIM. Now all of these are major steps and a believer cannot do this in his or her strength. But it is easy when a believer allows GOD to live through him or her. But that requires a believer dying to self. GOD’S desire is for all believers to be made in the image of HIS SON, JESUS.

When a believer is in the right relationship with GOD through CHRIST, he or she is always in and doing the will of GOD.

Let’s read Romans 12:3-8:

3 For by the grace given to me, I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he should think. Instead, think sensibly, as God has distributed a measure of faith to each one. 4 Now as we have many parts in one body, and all the parts do not have the same function, 5 in the same way we who are many are one body in Christ and individually members of one another. 6 According to the grace given to us, we have different gifts: If prophecy, use it according to the standard of faith; 7 if service, in service; if teaching, in teaching; 8 if exhorting, in exhortation; giving, with generosity; leading, with diligence; showing mercy, with cheerfulness.

Paul is addressing Christian attitude. In his letter to the Corinthians he addressed Spiritual gifts, gifts of the HOLY SPIRIT. Often believers whom GOD has manifested Himself through, can get a spiritual arrogance. They think they are more Spiritual than fellow believers. Since this was an issue with the Corinthian Christians, he expressed his thoughts on the matter of Spiritual pride.

Pride is good but believers must be careful not to let it go to their heads and express itself through an arrogant attitude. This is where Spiritual growth and maturity are important. A believer needs to realize that it is GOD and HIS power that is being manifested through his or her life through the gifts of the Spirit. A believer’s role is to be obedient to GOD in the use of the gift or gifts.

GOD gifts believers to minister to the living body of CHRIST. As such, each believer is Spiritually equipped to minister as GOD directs him or her. Paul used the human body to illustrate how GOD expects the living body of CHRIST to function. GOD equips believers differently, according to HIS plan and purpose. As the human body has different parts and functions each has a purpose. When the parts function in unity the living body functions as GOD expects. Paul deals with this concept more in 1 Corinthians 12:12-31:

Unity Yet Diversity in the Body

12 For as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body—so also is Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14 So the body is not one part but many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I’m not a hand, I don’t belong to the body,” in spite of this it still belongs to the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I’m not an eye, I don’t belong to the body,” in spite of this it still belongs to the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But now God has placed the parts, each one of them, in the body just as He wanted. 19 And if they were all the same part, where would the body be? 20 Now there are many parts, yet one body. 21 So the eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” nor again the head to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, all the more, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are necessary. 23 And those parts of the body that we think to be less honorable, we clothe these with greater honor, and our unpresentable parts have a better presentation. 24 But our presentable parts have no need [of clothing]* The bracketed text has been added for clarity. . Instead, God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the less honorable, 25 so that there would be no division in the body, but that the members would have the same concern for each other. 26 So if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and individual members of it. 28 And God has placed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, next, miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, managing, various kinds of languages. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all do miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in languages? Do all interpret? 31 But desire the greater gifts. And I will show you an even better way.

Paul mentions seven (7) gifts of GOD in Romans 12:3-8. These are not all the gifts of GOD:

Speaking gifts:

Prophesy – speaking the Word of GOD under the leadership of the HOLY SPIRIT. Prophesy can refer to forth-telling a specific message from GOD to a specific person or group of people.

Teaching – GOD grants the gift of teaching. Teaching is instructing in doctrines, fundamentals of growing and maturing in CHRIST and explaining prophesy to others. Teachers are held accountable to GOD because they speak with the authority and understanding from GOD.

Exhortation – Can be thought of as ministry of grace, consoler or an encourager.

Service gifts:

Ministry – means serving. The word Paul used is where we get the name for deacon. It is ministering to others and willingly meeting their needs.

Giving – This is giving as GOD directs without seeking praise from others. This is generous giving which comes from a heart of love and with no hidden agenda.

Leading – Gifted leadership is vital to all bodies. Those with the gift of leading are to do so with diligence or zeal.

Mercy – Compassion and love towards others especially towards those in need such as those who are sick, poor, getting older or disabled.

All of these gifts work together to minister to the living body of CHRIST.

Let’s read Romans 12:14-21:

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. 16 Be in agreement with one another. Do not be proud; instead, associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own estimation. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Try to do what is honorable in everyone’s eyes. 18 If possible, on your part, live at peace with everyone. 19 Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead, leave room for His[2] Lit the wrath. For it is written: Vengeance belongs to Me; I will repay,[3] Dt 32:35 says the Lord. 20 But If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him something to drink. For in so doing you will be heaping fiery coals on his head.[4] Pr 25:21–22 21 Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good.

Paul addressed persecution and how believers should respond. JESUS made it clear that the world persecuted HIM and believers should be prepared to be persecuted as well. This is where the rubber hits the road and I tell you without a genuine relationship with CHRIST it is virtually impossible to weather persecution in your own strength.

Here is where dying to self is critical. Think about a dead body. A person can do all sorts of brutal things to a dead body without the dead person knowing that anything has been done to them. They are dead. Or you can think of the time you had surgery and were put to sleep. The surgeon may have cut you, drilled or sawed on you but you felt nothing until they woke you up. Then you likely knew the pain of what had been done to you. Paul was telling believers how to respond when they encounter these life situations.

Paul told fellow believers to do their part out of a loving and caring heart. Do not try to avenge themselves. Give GOD room to take the necessary action. When a believer takes revenge into his or her hands he or she removes it from GOD’S hands. Often the believer thinks he or she can bring about retribution quicker and better than waiting on GOD to take action. When believers take action they often lose a relationship with that person for a lifetime. But if the person wronged allows GOD to take the action needed, often the relationship can be restored, because the person doing the injustice sees the power of GOD at work.

Another possibility is the believer may be the one in-the-wrong and GOD needs to reveal it to the believer to correct a situation. But in our scripture Paul is making the assumption that the believer has acted correctly.

When a believer has been dealt a wrong, a kind response does wonders and reveals the heart of a true believer, which, in turn honors GOD.

When the rubber hits the road of life, true believers must have the relationship with GOD through CHRIST to respond as GOD desires. It is next to impossible for a believer to respond in his or her strength. But it is easier to respond, as GOD desires for a believer to respond, when he or she has a changed heart which has been filled with the presence of GOD. In verse 18 Paul tells believers to do their part. The rest is left to GOD.

The topic of our study is to not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. For a believer’s mind to be renewed requires the believer to yield his or her will to GOD and allow GOD through the power of the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT lead and direct his or her life. This is the beginning of the renewing of the mind process. The rule of the flesh must yield to the rule of the Spirit. That requires a decision each day and often each moment as we journey through life. When we die to self, nothing can harm us but we cannot die to self without being empowered by the HOLY SPIRIT to continue to walk in our body of flesh and obediently serve GOD while we are still upon earth.

Paul continues to give us spiritual meat to chew upon. Just keep in mind a believer cannot accomplish this in his or her own strength. That is why GOD equips believers with the indwelling power of the HOLY SPIRIT. When a believer lives according to the flesh he or she is often defeated but when they allow the Spirit to rule, there is victory. This is not to say everything will go as the flesh wants things to go but as GOD wants them to go. If a believer decides to allow the Spirit to rule because he or she wants GOD to cream someone, then your motive is wrong. So yield your will to GOD because you trust HIM and serve HIM because you love HIM. Let HIM transform your mind.
